#nart and kyuubi

I have a one shot in mind, where Tsunade didn’t accept Sakura as a student; and in a fit of desperation Sakura does a reverse summoning on her own. She ends up transported into the underworld where she attempts to make a contract with the devils there. They refuse her, but in a fit of rage, she is able to manipulate their chakra and consume them (think blood bending from atla but with chakra control) and then, because she just fucking murdered and imbibed a devil, she goes on a full murder spree just absorbing all of the devils in this realm.

So, she is fundamentally changed by this. Blood red horns protruding from her forehead, fingers to elbows and toes to knees turned sooty, a mouthful of sharp fangs her lips can barely hold back. Something truly horrifying but beautiful.

Then, when she Naruto and Sasuke reconvene years later (at like 16) the boys are like the fuck happened to you, and she just smiles and tells them she followed in their footsteps. But no devils wanted her so she took them.

She tells Sasuke that he has to go with her now, and he scoffs because he still thinks she’s weak, a freaky pair of horns and a mouthful of fangs are weird but not intimidating. He draws up the sharingan but before he can do anything it dissipates to nothing.

He’s confused, he swore he pulled it up. Tries again. Fails again. Sakura is giggling like mad, he’s so cute when he gets angry. And she goes on a tirade that bloodlines and the tailed beasts are cool, but it doesn’t matter if someone else can fundamentally control everything you do (again, bloodbending but with chakra). And you find out her chakra control is so good she can reverse manipulate it from others, even without touching them.

Blah blah, there’s like a fight and stuff, and a god head bestowed. But, I have a bunch of art ideas for it yet alas, I am mediocre at art at best.

So accept this silly little doodle, ignore Sasuke’s fucky head, and contemplate bloodbending chakra control.

I'm thinking it'd be like that time Iruka saved Naruto

but to get this to work, we need like, Iruka to be as apparent as he was in the promos, where it was two men and three kids

and Iruka can only really tag along bc he n nart are FAMILY now and he went out looking for his kid and woah shit, rogue genin planning to grab Sasuke who's deserting?! K, I gotta help y'all

like, sand sibs still pop up, but Iruka is there with Naruto and Sasuke and Naruto fucks up and Iruka saved Sasuke and Naruto is like FUCK I KILLED IRUKA

which only adds to Sasuke's freak out that Iruka jumped in like that, sacrificed HIMSELF OVER HIM?!? and the years of loneliness just CRASH and overpowers his need for strength

Sasuke is like, 5, he needs someone to love him like that.

and they manage to return back to the village, Iruka low-key bleeding out, Sasuke and Naruto sobbing their eyes out.

once Iruka gets discharged from the hospital, he's like "yo I'm going to adopt Sasuke" and everyone's like "A NO NAME CHUNIN WITH THE KYUUBI AND THE LAST UCHIA?!? NO!!"

but then they're like "wait we wouldn't even HAVE the last uchia if it wasn't for him.... fine" and Iruka now listens to Naruto and Sasuke scream over who gets to piss first in the morning

and on top of that, everyone's like "what the fuck is up with Orochimaru's seal tho," and sometimes Sasuke hears him try and convince him to join him but he's like "NO I LOVE MY DAD"

Sakura is low-key jealous the boys get to hang out 24/7 and Kakashi is like "lmao I live there too" and she fractures his shin with how swift her kick is. he cries with pride despite the fact he isn't teaching her that

Notes for Chapter 10 of To Be a Kunoichi

Formats were made to be broken, as I did with this chapter.

After this arc, things will look up, at least for a bit (about two and a half years of very relative happiness). We have one more chapter to go.

As I said, formats are made to be broken. No scene breaks, no present scenes set in this chapter. It's supposed to feel long, arduous, and afford the reader no tonal or time breaks.

The past scenes are largely Naruto remembering what happened, hence the unreliable narration. The absence of scenes in the present is meant to suggest that this isn't something she ever thinks on or recalls if she can help it.

I fucked up a bit, and wanted to end the last chapter on an action note (the explosions) and then went back to my outline and went "oh no, this solitary confinement chapter is going to necessitate a minor timeskip in order to achieve the vibe I want". I think it adds to the floaty, unconnected vibe I was going for - it doesn't matter how she got here, there's nothing happening beyond those four walls for her.

Naruto isn't ever going to have this confirmed in the fic, but the cell's previous occupant was Kushina. Something something something intergenerational cycles of violence.

I actually can't believe it took nearly 35k words for Kks to tell her his name. That's a novella. Soon this project I started on a whim while bored will be novel length.

Notice how Kakashi manages to do something emotionally genuine only when there's three inches of steel between them. He probably finds it easier to talk to her when he can't actually see her, the way the Supernatural brothers can only have emotionally honest conversations when Not Looking At Each Other while they're driving their car.

Without her own boosted healing (+ the kyuubi's boost) Nart really struggles to gauge how much she's hurting herself. She doesn't pay attention to pain because it normally doesn't matter - but in this cell, her chakra is suppressed and she's not healing as she normally does.

I'm fond of portrayals of jinchuriki that emphasize the body horror/supernatural elements of having a demon sealed in you: this won't ever come up in the story, because Nart has no reason to know it, but her eyes reflect light like a real fox's. It's very unnerving for all her teammates, but they are all too polite to say anything. Similarly, her hair grows insanely fast, also slightly unnerving for people who saw her with a bob a couple months ago and now her hair is like a foot longer. There's just a lot of little things that add up to make her a little uncanny.

Naruto relies on her chakra sensing A LOT. Without it, everyone around her seems like a lifeless puppet/corpse, it's very scary for her. In fanfiction, often any old shinobi can identify people (at least, people they know well) by chakra signature, or sense shinobi who are close by. In canon this isn't the case at all - people can sense when large amounts of chakra are used in jutsu, and can sense really powerful/malevolent beings like Orochimaru or Kurama, but identifying individual signatures/knowing when shinobi are nearby is a rare skill.

every time i think abt Kushina's various character designs as she gradually appears more thru the whole series it makes me so sad that she didnt get fun Kyuubi whisker marks on her face too like Naruto has even though she was the nine tailed fox before it passed down to him 😔 in my mind she had the whisker marks her whole life and they got all scratchy when she was angry/in nine-tailed fox mode too like what happens with nart

also side note but i wish we were shown more strength capability from nart without depending on kyuubi mode, sage mode, etc, i always considered those power ups and i would've liked if his abilities and strength were also shown to us at a baseline level and is probably why i feel like his actual physical fighting development is pretty stunted despite what the narrative tries to tell us

i know it won't happen but i keep hoping for naruto to do something other than kyuubi mode and rasengangangans

Notes for Chapter 7 of To Be a Kunoichi

Hello all, Things will get worse before they get better for dear old Nart in the past, I'm afraid.

Shisui while Nart and Kks cry and throw up and bleed all over each other ten feet away from him: I am here also.

Poor guy.

Heavy handed Robert Frost references in the opening scene - from the last stanza of his very famous poem, which goes: "The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,/ But I have promises to keep,/ And miles to go before I sleep,/ And miles to go before I sleep."

The sleep in the poem is often taken as referring to death. Both Kks and Nart have promises to keep to each other, and a long way to go before they sleep... (as I promised in a comment, all four of Team Ro will make it back to the end of the fic alive and relatively well).

The scene titles are narrated by Nart, as she's the narrator of this whole story. Just assume they have ninja Robert Frost or whatever.

I hinted at this in this chapter, I swear, I just can't keep myself from spoiling things, but one thing I have come up with is a bit of a role reversal for Nart and Kks, with each adopting their canon counterpart's nindo - Nart mentions a promise Kks made to her (he's not going back on his word!) and Nart tells Kurama that she could never abandon her teammates.

What's the promise? RAFO.

A lot of this chapter takes place at night. It's worth noting what happens at dawn vs dusk vs the dead of night - maybe even thematic. Maybe the darkness is metaphorical.

Kks and Shisui talk with her about the mission in the dead of night. Aiko asks for her help in the dead of night. But when Aiko comes to help her, talk to her about her heritage... it's just before dawn.

Poor Nart isn't getting a lot of sleep in this chapter.

Aiko assumes that Nart is the world's tiniest missing-nin, who fled some minor Hidden Village (e.g. Ame) due to discrimination reasons. We know of one Uzumaki refugee family that settled in Rain Country (Nagato and his parents), and in my fic we have two Uzumaki OCs who live on the border of Rain Country. It's a logical assumption for Aiko that Nart comes from Ame.

Intel is a theme for this chapter, while Nart struggles to figure out what's going on, and learns key details about herself... she also KEEPS key details from her teammates. Surely this cannot backfire!

In a similar vein, Nart is scared to share things about the Uzumaki/her discoveries with Shisui out of fear for all their safety, after what happened with Kks when he told her about the Kyuubi. Lies beget lies in the shinobi system, as violence begets violence. I sure hope that won't be a recurring theme.

On a marginally more serious note: Kakashi has been one of my favourite characters since I was a wee bairn! I was also an edgy emo bairn, so the Akatsuki were my absolute favourites back in the day - I was deep into the 'they're all just chilling in a house together and acting like frat kids' part of the fandom. But I always thought Kakashi was a Cool Guy, y'know?

Then I started rewatching as an adult. As a very depressed adult who happened to be the same age Kakashi was at the start of Nart (the Nart-start, if you will).

And I realised... bruh... he really was just Some Guy dealing with one hell of a shit hand of cards, huh??

Like, the village gave him a jinchuuriki to look after! A jinchuuriki who JUST found out why the entire village HATES him, and who sees himself as a vessel for the monster that killed his hero and almost destroyed his home. A jinchuuriki who happens to be the son of the guy who kinda raised Kakashi! And who looks just like him! But Kakashi is forbidden from telling him anything about his own family!

And he's the most reckless and ridiculous shinobi ever!!!

Then one of the other boys they give him to train is the LAST SURVIVOR OF A LITERAL GENOCIDE. That was carried out by Kakashi's own teammate (on Konoha's orders, though of course, none of them know that at the time). And this boy is still obviously very fucking traumatised!

Like... Kakashi is Not The Most Emotionally Stable Guy in canon. He does fuck up with Sasuke (and spends the rest of the series beating himself up about it) but let's be real - a HELL of a lot more support was needed, for that squad.

Konoha needs therapists. Konoha needs to stop using child soldiers. But those are massive issues that couldn't have been fixed for Doylian ReasonsTM! Unless Kakashi literally went rogue, grabbed the kids, ran off to start a chill farm somewhere and probably got hunted down for his troubles, they were always going to be stuck in a fucked-up environment, because they were raised in a martial state still recovering from a MASSIVE war.

...I'm rambling but the point is, SO MANY MESSED-UP FACTORS led to the rift in Team 7 and Sasuke's eventual defection. Kakashi definitely takes waaaaaay too much responsibility onto his own shoulders. But hey!!! Guilt complexes are my character kryptonite, so I shlorp that tasty soop right up.

Anyway, the main catalyst for my ongoing obsession with the lanky scarecrow man is because of those later flashback episodes where you saw just how fucking numb and depressed he was before he got the kids. 1) empathy. 2) my entire viewpoint of him shifted from 'cool funny wiseguy who gets all the best fight scenes' to '...oh god just let him chill with his dogs and his kids and be happy'

...Then you have the whole freaking INSANE plot with Obito! Where like... the guy Kakashi modelled half his personality and his entire ethos around, after suffering repeated trauma and PTSD as a kid... the guy he's looked up to since Obito died for him, the guy whose sacrifice motivated Kakashi to allow himself to care about other people again, the guy who IS his entire morality, practically...

TURNS OUT TO HAVE BEEN ALIVE ALL ALONG? AND CAUSED THE KYUUBI ATTACK THAT SET OFF THIS WHOLE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS??? AND HE'S ONE OF THE BIG BADS OF THE ENTIRE SERIES???????
