that scene in season 1 where teruki hanazawa exorcises ekubo mid-sentence... and shigeo's eyes widen in shock?

i really want to talk about it, specifically the explosion meter accompanying it.

normally, when the teenager's emotions aren't obvious to the audience, that meter relays to us a sense of what he is actually feeling. but we cannot trust the meter here. we see it jump up a few points at teru's 'psycho wave' sending the sleazy ghost to the shadow realms, and remain steady at 50% upon shigeo's recollections of the spirit's unsavory nature. the boy outright tells teru that he isn't bothered. and it's funny!

but shigeo isn't being honest with himself here either.

his face briefly gives his feelings away before resettling into its normal flat affect. (to be fair, what he's really feeling isn't teru's business. this kid is trying to provoke a fight out of him, after all.) after he's basically tortured into exploding, shigeo spends three hours in the pouring rain, searching everywhere for ekubo.

three. hours.

these are not the actions of someone who isn't bothered. letting himself get drenched to the point of sickness,

even though he literally holds the power to shield himself from it,

reads to me like unconscious self-punishment for allowing all this to happen.

after a large chunk of his short life spent denying and fearing them for good reason, shigeo's first impulse is often not to use his psychic powers -- even after his integration at the story's end. i wish this was discussed more, because many watchers cannot fathom why this boy with world-breaking psychic abilities would ever refuse to use them.

also: the explosion meter lying to us / representing shigeo's detachment from his own emotions alexithymia may occur elsewhere in the series as well, especially when he's not close to an explosion; i'm reminded of the tiny dent ritsu's provocation of him makes in it a few episodes later.

one thing i will say for the hunger games' favor is that katniss' presence and narration is very strong. i like her bitterness and cynicism, and she is an interesting portrait of parentification. there's a tangible sense that her years as sole provider for her family have taken a massive toll on her. I especially like that she has lasting resentment towards her mother over it. it feels real in a way I don't often see in YA fiction.

Been working very slowly on the next chapter of So It Goes and I'm not at a point where I have much else to share since the last time, but the brainworm bit me real bad on something else. So here's something a little different. Probably won't get into the meat of this one for a while, but I couldn't help starting it... This is what I get for listening to Orville Peck on repeat.

It was an indisputable fact – that from a very young age – Robert John Linder fucking hated his name. Robert. Rob. Bob. Bobby. Linder. Moron. Dumbass. Motherless son of a bitch. He’d been called just about every variation of the name 'Robert' you could think of underneath the goddamn Texas sun. The problem was, over the course of sixteen years and being the troublemaker he was, he’d just gotten into the habit of always answering when someone said his name. And habits, especially the bad ones, well, sometimes they’re just plain hard to break. Like now for instance. Behind the football equipment shed of A&M Consolidated High School, where Robert was trying to enjoy the auditory company of The Plasmatics with the pack of smokes he’d stolen from his dead beat excuse of an old man.

Having a hard time getting creative juices to flow again.

Alvin managed to get a little (intro?) or something done for the next multi-fic idea.

“As Classic Alvin, I’m rambunctious and wild. I do things without considering the consequences. By the time I realize I’ve made a dumb decision, it’s too late. I’ve got a huge mess to clean up. He’s fun in the moment, but then he wallows in his regrets.

As Nerdy Alvin, I overthink everything so much that I freeze when asked to make a decision. I make too many plans. I get lost inside my own head. I hyper analyze and get fixated on learning as much as possible. I become more introverted and aloof.

I can deny it all I want. He is my “Simon” side. A part of me I didn’t realize existed until Jeanette helped me learn to control my impulses more. Though I fear she may have caused me to flip a little too far in the opposite direction.

And Alvin 2.0, he’s the best parts of both of them. He’s got the passion, the fun, the spirit, while maintaining the intellect, the expert planning skills, and the ability to think ahead. I LOVE being him. But he almost feels too…stable, sometimes. Missing that randomness and chaos a bit. Being stuck in his mindset too long also feels unnatural and uncomfortable after a while.

I don’t really want to have to choose between the three. Not permanently. There’s a time and a place for all the sides of me. I just wish I was better at judging what that time and place is. I wish I was better at matching the switch to the situation. I’m not great at it, but it’s something I’m working on.”
