one thing i will say for the hunger games' favor is that katniss' presence and narration is very strong. i like her bitterness and cynicism, and she is an interesting portrait of parentification. there's a tangible sense that her years as sole provider for her family have taken a massive toll on her. I especially like that she has lasting resentment towards her mother over it. it feels real in a way I don't often see in YA fiction.
