The Man From U.N.C.L.E (2015) Gift Exchange

Signups are now open for the exchange until mid October - you can find this year’s collection and rules here!

This sounds cool! What is it and what do I have to do?

The TMFU Gift Exchange is exactly what it sounds like. You sign up right here by filling out the request and offer forms. After the sign-up closes, your offer will be matched with someone else’s requests and your requests with someone else’s offer anonymously (not necessarily the same participant). Once the matching is done, this gift exchange appears then under Assignments on your AO3 account with your assigned requests. From those requests you choose a prompt and write a fic for it with at least 1000 words in English or create fanart for it. Create a gift, get a gift!

If you are already familiar with exchanges either on AO3 or other sites, nothing about this should be too unusual, but if you’re a fan of the film who would like to participate but is new to the concept of exchanges and has questions or concerns, please check out the FAQ of the collection for more info!

I’m a long-time omegaverse enjoyer but this is actually my first attempt at creating such story! I really wanted to give it a shot when I saw the lovely prompt.😇

I love how Illya and Napoleon just seem to take turns saving each other's lives. And also, how they would have kept ending up dead if not for the moment of "I hate this dude but guess I gotta save him, only for the sake of the mission of course" when they saved the other one before. Especially at the beginning of the movie.

~Illya holds onto the car Napoleon and Gabby try to escape in~ Napoleon could have very easily killed him right there, clear shot, no distance at all, but somehow it just doesn't seem fair (N "saves" I)

~ Public bathroom scene: Illya refrains from suffocating Napoleon after his boss tells him to let go.~ kinda not sure whether that counts. Saving his life by not killing him (?), guess he could've just ignored his handler and go all in. I'll let it count. (I "saves" N)

~ breaking into the satellite facility part 1: almost getting caught because Illya is too slow to pick the lock -> Napoleon picking the lock for them (N saves I, or well saves them both)

~ breaking into the satellite facility part 2: Illya figuring out a way to escape when everything goes to shit. (I saves N, or well also saves them both)

~ The best, funniest and most epic scene in the entire movie if you ask me: the harbour and Napoleon's little truck-picnick~ now see I really love this scene because it is incredibly comedic while being incredibly dramatic and angsty and a major turning point in the story. They're being chased - they're out in the harbour on a boat - all escape ways blocked - Napoleon holding on to the top of the boat. They're being shot at - a lot. Illya takes a sharp turn - Napoleon falls off the boat into the water, or does he let go on purpose ?- Illya doesn't notice right away. Turning around a few moments later he only sees the entry holes of the shots, right where Napoleon used to hang on. What conclusion does this lead him to? Surely he must think Napoleon got shot, fell off the boat and is drowning or bleeding out or both somewhere on the water. He is on his own. So he tries to get away, but is fighting a lost fight. Meanwhile, Napoleon swims ashore, finding the picnic basket on the truck and just enjoys a little break, while Iliya is being hunted down.

Now here comes the part, which I consider the major turning point in their partnership. It's a tiny little moment. Almost unnoticeable. Almost.

Illya's boat is now on fire, and it's sinking quite rapidly. The hunt is over. Napoleon starts the engine of the truck. He's about to just drive off, in the chaos no one would suspect their own truck driving out of the harbour. He could just tell their handlers the truth. Iliya was killed by their targets. Get rid of him easily and move on with the mission by himself.

But then, he changes his mind. We can see how his expression changes. He's like "damn, somehow I can't do that. Why do I have to be like this? Why can't I just let him be done with?" Kinda being annoyed by himself really.

And so he turns the truck, drives it into the water, right onto their opponents boat, sinking all of them. Using the headlights to locate Illya. Saving his life by dragging him to the surface and ashore. (N saves I)

~ the chair: Napoleon is trapped, tortured by a nazi psychopath, no way of escaping. He believes Gaby has sold them out. He has no idea whether Illya is even still alive. And yet, somehow there he is, getting him out of a hopeless situation. (Also if anyone is ever shocked by electricity, get them to the hospital immediately!!! Heart failure can happen from this as well a day after as right away. They need to be under medical observation!!! Don't let the media tell you otherwise!!!) (I saves N)

~ the iconic motorcycle scene. Illya is hurt, trapped under his own vehicle after a crash that, lets be honest, should have killed him instantly. Napoleon is trying to save Gaby from the crashed car and is ambushed, about to get shot point blank while on his back on the ground. Yet somehow Illya doesn't just manage to get his motorcycle off of himself, but continues to throw it onto Napoleon's assailant. Guess Iliya's in the lead now (I saves N)

~ And finally: the stand off about the disc. Illya feels betrayed, he is struggling, he doesn't want to kill Napoleon, but needs to finish the mission. He is close to a psychotic episode. There is so much pressure on him, who wouldn't be stressed to their total limit. By now Napoleon knows him, he is excellent in reading people. He would have been able to shoot first. Maybe even resulting into killing Illya. But instead he decides differently and is able to de-escalate the situation. By showing care and kindness (aka surprising Illya with the watch). Thereby he doesn't only save his own life, he probably saves them both. (N saves I, I guess)

~ together they are able to make the only logical decision. A decision that is probably saving millions of lives. They burn the disc. Disobedience against their handlers. A decision based on what is right. Together. (N&I saving loads of people together)

I actually have four fics on the go at once, but two of them are sort of redundant at the moment so,

From A Cowboy and a Communist Walk Into a Bar:

There is a reasonable explanation for this; one that Illya will think up one day, even if it kills him. He doesn’t believe in coincidence, not destiny. No even luck. In the world of international espionage, one relies on skill and skill alone. An incompetent spy doesn’t last very long, usually ending up in an unmarked grave before they’ve been in the game longer than a year or two. He’s been submerged in the culture of secrecy and spy work since he was fourteen, first with the GRU in his motherland, and then, following a mission to Berlin, he’d been transferred to U.N.C.L.E. It’s been six years now, him and his partner, Gabriella Teller. He wishes she was here with him this time, but she’s in France, sniffing around for trouble. So it’s with a sense of looming dread and irritation that Illya shoulders his way into the local bar, squinting into the sudden golden hazed gloom. It smells of beer and something smokey, and Illya instantly longs for the fresh night air outside.

And The Istanbul Affair:

It takes them another twenty minutes of thin asphalt roads before they finally reach the city. And Illya cannot help but admit, at least to himself, that this hot, dusty land has a certain beauty to it. But Istanbul herself… she is all ornate buildings, elegant blocks with rows of balconies, plaster and yellow stone and tiles patterned with glorious color. Illya can see domed roofs gleaming in the sunlight, and spires of silver and gold, mounted with spheres and crescent moons. They even pass a market, tucked away into a square, and the air is suddenly filled with the scent of rosewater, orange, and spiced meat and flatbread. There are trees everywhere too, emerald boughs rustling in the breeze, the faintest gleam of sapphire between buildings showing where the sea stretches off into the horizon, blue like Solo’s eyes.

OH SHIT OH FUCK *runs through the door, tripping over everything, the comically large amount of folders and papers in my arms scatter everywhere while I try in vain to gather them, but it just causes more to spill* godfuckingdammit SORRY BOSS I FORGOT IT WAS WEDNESDAY

Anyway, here's a snippet from the Domovoy fic!!

Solo furrows his brow and glances down at his injured hand. A tiny sliver of white cotton peeks out above the line of his pocket. He curses himself for not triple checking its visibility and sits down at his desk with a sigh, “Where's Peril?” “Meeting with Waverly about Mezimesti. Why? Do you need your emotional support Russian?” Gaby teases, eyes glittering with mischief. “He's not my–,” Solo shakes his head, “I burnt myself on the new stove. I was going to tell you this evening, but since you've demanded an explanation, I'll go ahead and ask if you could take a look.” “I'm a mechanic, not a handyman.” “At least give it a once-over. If you can fix it, I'll make you dinner. Anything you like.” Her lips purse in thought, then she rolls her eyes, “Deal. You're making Frikadellen.”

Random thought (warning for major chadacter death): I'm thinking a 5+1 fic with 5 times Gaby and/or Illya save Napoleon and 1 time they don't.

Naooleon, I think, is the most kidnappable of them. Well, maybe Gaby should be, but I think Napoleon is more risk-taking and overconfident, so he puts himself in more dangerous situations than Gaby.

Anyway, it sort of becomes a running joke in the team because Napoleon gets kidnapped most often. Sometimes it's almost harmless and Gaby and Illya manage to find him and save him before anything bad happens. Sometimes he gets hurt. These kidnapings don't get joked about much and only after a while has passed. But ever since Illya came for him when he was in Rudy's care, Napoleon has a sort of unwavering faith that his partners will always find him and save him.

Until one time, they are too late.

If I was the one writing the fic, I would probably end the +1 time with Napoleon tied to a chair, bad guy pointing a gun to his head, ready to shoot him. This time the bad guys aren't interested in gaining information from Napoleon, they want to get rid of him and get away fast. So, Napoleon is sitting tied down, thinking until the last moment that any second now, Gaby and Illya are going to burst through the door and save him, like they did so many times before. And then the bad guy shoots him in the head. That's where I would end it, though exploring the grief and guilt Illya, Gaby and maybe even Waverly feel would be super interesting. I just don't think I would manage to write it well enough.

But I imagine that if I continued, it would go something like: The bad guys get rid of the body, throw it in a nearby river. They don't even bother closing his eyes. They just weight him down with some stones and let him sink to the bottom of the river. When Illya and Gaby arrive at the warehouse (or a different remote, slightly dilapidated, impersonal building), they only find a large blood splatter and a bullet buried in the concrete floor. For a while, they try to maintain hope - they found no body, afterall. However, once they manage to track down the bad guys, they find out that Napoleon was shot. That they were too late. And betrayed his trust. Due to their own failure, they lost him forever.

They search for the body, but the river is large and the current is strong, so it's entirely possible that it managed to overpower the stones, dslodge them, and moved Napoleon's body downstream. It was a rush job by the bad guys, so the corpse disposal was shoddily done. Waverly doesn't have unlimited resources to wastw looking for a corpse of one of his agents, so he eventually has to call of the search. Illya and Gaby are mad at him over this. They don't want to hold the funeral without a body, a tiny part of them stilling holding onto hope that Napoleon is somehow miraculously alive.
