Up to the @davenporthouse attic for a glass of malmsy. Malmsy is a sweeter madeira, drunk with a slice of pound cake. It's a popular feature in the elevenses meal. Like the name suggests, elevenses is a short respite, accompanied with a small snack and drink, enjoyed around 11am. Pouring the madeira. This varietal is known as "rainwater". It takes its name from a crate of madeira rescued from a 1790 shipwreck. In spite of being exposed to the elements, the madeira actually improved. Madeira is now pasteurized, so that the heat can allow it to develop. It is also a fortified wine, which means alcohol is added to stimulate its development. Given that, you can understand why madeira glasses are quite small-but you can always ask for seconds! I think it's really important for museums to engage the public with events like this. It brings history, a subject too often stereotyped as stuffy, to life. The people of the past weren't rigid, unfeeling creatures. They drank, attended parties, fell in love and lived full lives.
