Up to the @davenporthouse attic for a glass of malmsy. Malmsy is a sweeter madeira, drunk with a slice of pound cake. It's a popular feature in the elevenses meal. Like the name suggests, elevenses is a short respite, accompanied with a small snack and drink, enjoyed around 11am. An example of what one of the children's rooms at the @davenporthouse might have looked like in the Summer months. The stairs up to the raised bed house a chamber pot, which would have been useful in the middle of the night. The bed is draped in mosquito netting, to prevent against bugs harassing you in your sleep. Savannah was the sight of one of the most prolific yellow fever epidemics in 1820, so keeping mosquitoes at bay was serious business (mosquitos helped spread the disease.) The floors in the summers would have been stripped of carpets, which were rolled up and stored. This dining area of the @davenporthouse is set up for a maidera party. Maidera is a fortified wine, similar to a port or sherry, meant to be drunk after dinner (we'll come back to that later, stay tuned.) Beautiful glassware like this would have been obligatory, as dining and drinking were the heart of one's social life, and you want to treat your guests right (and show off a bit.) The glass globe you'll see in these pictures was not for humans to drink out of, but flies. Insects are to this day a problem in the warmer months of Georgia. This glass globe is a fly catcher. A bit of sugar water would be put in a small dish inside. Flies and other pests would fly up through the bottom to get the sugar, but find that the shape of the bottle prevented them from going back out. Not much is known if this room and its appearance during the Davenport's time. What is known is that the window frames would have been painted green. This was again to prevent against insects, as it was believed that flying bugs did not like the colour green.
