Dragon Zakura 2
Grazie Dragon Zakura.❤️
Grazie.❤️❤️❤️
E invece...
I MIRACOLI SIGNORI.
Voto: 7.9

Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku review and analysis
Wotakoi is a manga and anime written by Fujita. The story is a slice of life romance that follows 4 adult office workers struggling with relationships and being an anime or video game fan in society.
I was initially attracted to read this because the song in the intro to the anime was trending online, sticking it in my mind when I inevitably found it in manga form at Indigo. I picked it up over a year ago but only finished it in February after procrastinating reading it which I regret extremely. I absolutely loved this series and a lot of scenes had me giggling or squealing over the troupes and cute romantic moments.
To summarize, Wotakoi’s main character is Narumi Momose, a young adult starting at a new job after her previous workplace and boyfriend discovered she is an “Otaku”. On her first day at her new job, she encounters Hirotaka Nifuji, a childhood friend and fellow Otaku. Together, they reminisce about childhood, video games, and Narumi’s failed relationships, when Hirotaka decides that if love is so hard for the both of them, they should date each other. This deal of course comes with Hirotaka’s gamer prowess to assist Narumi in video games, as well as a bonded agreement to protect each others nerdy sides. The story shows them struggling with their interests in daily life and interactions with their just as nerdy coworkers.
Gender and sexuality play a large role in this series, as well as emphasis on “Otaku” fan culture. Though there are 4 main characters, a lot of the story follows Narumi, who can be classified by the term “fujoshi”. A fujoshi is typically a girl who obsesses over boys love manga and anime. She herself writes and illustrates this content to sell at conventions as well. This has striken controversy about this series since the whole idea of being a girl hyper-fascinated in male-male romance is considered creepy or weird in real people, nonetheless in fictional characters. Momose is heterosexual herself, but many scenes show her fantasizing about her coworkers in BL romance troupes. The other female main character, Hanako Koyonagi, is similar to Momose in her BL fantasies, but she is also a cosplayer, or in this case, a crossplayer (a cosplayer who dresses up as primarily characters of the opposite gender). This often creates funny dynamics between her and her boyfriend, Tarou Kabakura, who often questions how he feels about dating a girl who frequently looks like a guy (referenced in image below). Koyonagi and Momose have a few scenes where they have crossdressed their boyfriends to look like women, making for more entertaining gender conflicts. Generally, this story uses gender and sexuality as a point of amusement rather than a focal point or dramatic effect.
A different discussion of gender occurs with the side characters of the manga, Naoya Nifuji and Kou Sakuragi, two college students with very contrasting personalities. Naoya is bubbly and outgoing, yet chooses to befriend the socially anxious Kou after meeting at Naoya’s workplace. Kou is a biological female, but appears very androgynous, and Nao mistakes her for a boy during the start of their story. This turns into the largest plot point of Naoya discovering that Kou has been a girl all along, and Kou’s embarassment and fear that Nao wouldn’t like her after discovering she’s “lied” about who she was. Kou has spent her whole life very lonely and doesn’t want to lose Nao because of how he has given her new confidence in social situations. This relationship develops into a somewhat cliche dynamic, with Naoya realizing he has feelings for her now that shes a girl in his eyes, but this gender change does play a large role in Kou’s character development and self expression as a woman. My only note on this side story is that Kou and Naoya were my favourite couple while reading the manga and was very disappointed to find out that the Wotakoi anime stops before going into their relationship further. Hoping for another season to see them progress in colour :).
All four of the main characters in this story are considered “Otaku’s”. Otaku is a Japanese term that refers to anyone who indulges in nerdy content like video games, anime, manga, cosplay, etc., and are typically stereotyped in society as losers. The groups have many scenes where they visit conventions and manga stores, or when they are displayed as their characters in the video games they play. This manga/anime puts a lot of effort into the accurate depiction of life as an Otaku and fan interactions within the community. This really adds to the slice of life part of the genre, being relatable to viewers as they themselves are just as nerdy as the characters they’re watching. This is an important thing that I don’t see a lot of manga or anime represent, being realistic representations of Otaku culture and relationships. Most romance manga is very fantastical or idealized, where interactions seem structured and poetic. In this story the characters feel a lot more familiar, often arguing or encountering silly antics that could happen to anyone.
Wotakoi has been my favourite when it comes to romance so far, and I really hope to see more updates from the creator in the future. The manga artstyle is absolutely stunning and the plot is simple but funny. Overall an easy read that I would recommend to any romance fan.

Furuba Season 3 - Episode 3 - Thought Post - SPOILERS!
Before I even watched the episode, I already knew that the graduation moments were going to get to me - and oh boy! - they sure did! I was a crying mess when watching them, lol. Though, not because of my own sense of nostaglia for high school or my own graduation or anything like that, but because it made me remember watching my students own students in Japan graduate. Minagawa's feelings were also very similar to the ones I remember feeling when I left my schools, once to transfer to Kangawa Prefecture and the other to move back home to the USA. That whole segment was extremely well done and really captured the feeling, sentiments, and atmosphere of graduation, especially in Japan.
Though, I do think that a universal experience and aspect of graduation, especially graduation from high school, is that whole "let bygones be bygones" type of situation. In Japan, student's have a yearbook too, and they are given time to go around and get signatures from classmates and teachers and I can remember getting signatures even from other students that I didn't really like all that much. I feel that same sorta situation applies here with Minagawa. She was "mean girl," especially at the start of the series. But over the course of the series we've seen her grow and mature a bit. There is still a part of her that is still rather immature, but she is still only roughly 18 years old, she still has a lot of growing and maturing to do.
But, the way she expresses her feelings to Yuki, using the past tense (in both the English translation and the native Japanese) for love - "loved." She loved him, but she is graduating now and is letting go of that. She focuses on Yuki's happiness and not on things like jealousy over Tohru and her closeness to Yuki. We saw glimmers of this Minagawa over the course of the series, the good person that lies underneath the feelings of infatuation that bring out the worst in her. And as we watch her and the other seniors graduate, we, as watchers, kinda experience what I talked about before. That whole "let bygones be bygones" situation.
That's not to say that mean girls or bullies should just automatically be forgiven or anything like that, but sometimes there really are situations like this where students grow and change and start to leave behind their bad behavior as the get older and the reality of entering the "real world" sets in.
And, while we are still on the topic of Minagawa, I'm going to briefly talk about Nao. I've never disliked Nao and I always found his situation to be nice in a way, since he and Kimi have more "normal" high school experiences. His situation with Yuki and Minagawa seems so trivial, but that's a bit refreshing especially in an episode that also combined Machi's heavier backstory in it. That being said, Nao as a character was never really endearing to me either, but he was quite endearing towards the end here, when he talks to Minagawa at the end. It was a very sweet moment.
Rest under a Read More due to length.
The anime only moment with Kyo, Tohru, Hana, and Uo was great too! I like how they used it to transition from the Yuki and Machi part of the episode to the graduation part of the episode. Also, Uo's comment about how they only have a year left highlights the fact that Yuki, Kyo, and Tohru *aren't* the ones graduating yet. I really like how Fruits Basket doesn't actually highlight graduation as a *super* important moment for the main characters of the series, unlike what you usually see in many other series (anime and otherwise).
It is an important milestone in someone's life, of course, but not like an end all be all type of moment like media often makes it out to be. Here we see it being highlighted, because for Minagawa, a character that kind of captures a lot of the high school experience (both good and bad) graduating high school really is a very big and key thing for her, and that makes sense with her as a secondary/minor character.
The last thing I'll mention about the graduation part of this episode is how bright and colorful it is. When I lived in Toyama Prefecture, the students graduated in March, but it was uncommon for the cherry blossoms to have bloomed quite yet. Furuba takes place in a location closer to Tokyo though, and when I was in Kanagawa Prefecture, it was much more common for the cherry blossoms to be in bloom for graduation. It's a truly lovely and beautiful experience and contrasts so amazingly well to the first half of the episode, with Machi's backstory, in which lots of dark, winter like colors are still used.
Those colors really highlight Machi's state of mind and how she remembers and feels about her mother and her experiences as a child. I feel Machi's backstory is probably one that a lot of people can relate to in some way - the pressure to be perfect/always do well in school, studies, or whatever one chooses to do, combined with parents who use their children as pawns against each other. That latter bit reminds me of the Breakfast Club and how Claire's divorced parents used her as a pawn to get back at each other. It's an awful thing that sadly happens quite a lot in situations of divorce and whatnot.
I don't have too much to say about the Yuki and Machi stuff. It was, of course, paralleled with Minagawa's confession and her hope that Yuki will find happiness, which is a nice combination and touch, and adds a good layer of consistency with Season 2. It adds a sort of book end feeling to all of that. Now that Minagawa has graduated, Yuki's character is allowed (narratively speaking) to finally move on and properly connect with one of the people that will make him happy - Machi.
The way the Yuki and Machi moments were animated and adapted were really nicely done. The timing of the humorous moments with Kakeru were excellent (and I still can't believe they had him actually say erection, lol), while the moments with Machi and her memories really captured the feeling of being trapped, and the heartfelt moments between Yuki and Machi were just so sweet. The chalk scene was just so well done and I love how nonchalantly Yuki broke it. There moments were so well done, I loved them!
Also, gonna put this here before I forget, but Kimi was (of course) great! Her ability to instantly understand Nao's situation is always impressive to me. It really shows how she is perceptive and plays right into her ability to troll the Prince Yuki Fanclub, lol.
Visually, I really liked the moments of Nao closing the door and it lingering on the visual of his palm for a moment. It's like he wants to just cute off whatever Yuki was saying right there:
The visual representation of the tightrope metaphor was nicely done too:
And Yuki stopping the ladder from harming Tohru:
I feel like this moment really, metaphorically, foreshadows a certain fight between Yuki and Kyo.
Anyway, wrapping this all up - Hiro and Hinata with their mom, Satsuki, at the end was just so adorable and sweet! Ugh. There was also the ending moment with Akito, but I'm going to leave discussion of that (and the brief shot connected to that plot line from Episode 2) for next week's episode, because this post is massive enough already, lol. The only final thought I really have is that the flow and pace of the actual content within the episodes themselves have been some of the best in Furuba, for these past two episodes especially. I think it really highlights how this last section of the manga naturally flows together a lot better than the previous sections of the manga as well. You can really feel that the end is near.

In chapters 102 and 103 of Fruits Basket, Machi is called out for her odd destructive behavior again, and girls from her class inform the student council of a nasty rumor about her. Kakeru thinks that Machi might open up to Yuki about what’s going on with her, so they pay a visit to her apartment.
As graduation draws nearer, Yuki receives love confession after love confession—much to his chagrin. A specific summons of Yuki’s causes Nao to jealous, but everyone is able to get what they wanted to say off of their chests.
