Books I Did Not Review (But Enjoyed Reading!)
Instead of a book review today, I'm discussing books I did NOT review - but still enjoyed reading! #books #fiction #reading
Hello, readers! This post is a bit different from the regular book reviews. As many of you know, I read many books. I’ve borrowed up to twenty books at once from the library (not counting e-books) at a time, and there are just so many books I enjoy reading that it’s impossible to write book reviews for all of them. With this in mind, I thought it would be nice to share a post discussing books I…

Unfortunately, Frozen 2 has a manga...
Warning: Anti-frozen, whitewashing (they didn’t whitewash Mattias, just everyone else)
I cannot express how thoroughly uncomfortable I am as a black woman when Disney hires manga artists who clearly don’t have any experience or interest in drawing dark skinned characters or black people, are tasked with drawing adaptations of Disney films with diverse casts.
They just let artists like Nao Kodaka whitewash Tiana and make her skin white, and allow Arina Tanemura to remove nonwhite citizens from Arendelle in the opening chapter??? Like whatt???
Like, I respect Arina Tanemura’s hyper detailed work, and her previous manga look like fun to read, but the Frozen 2 manga makes it very clear to me from the previews I’ve seen that she isn’t interested in drawing dark skinned characters unless she is absolutely forced to. The opening song number, “Some Things Never Change” is showcases a more diverse Arendelle, and yet, the manga shows Arendelle just as white and homogenous as it was before. I can’t think of any other reason than it’s because she deliberately excluded them.
Please, someone, for the love of god tell me I’m wrong and she gives characters other than Mattias some melanin because I am seething right now. Please show me supporting characters other than Mattias in the Frozen 2 manga who have their skin color toned in because this is so fucked up.
The worst part is that I love manga and the Frozen 2 manga actually looks good! Truth is, they aren’t as creepy looking as their 3d counterparts.
The facial expression are like stone though, because, well, DISNEY. Like, Arina Tanemura’s default facial expressions for her characters are way more dynamic than...whatever this is.
But this also reminds me how deeply entrenched colorism is in manga as well, and that's just sad.
#anti frozen#i couldnt help myself#i knew that i would be disappointed#I cant tell you the fear I had when I heard Arina Tanemura was going to draw frozen 2#like has she ever drawn a black person before??#not from what ive seen of her work#why did i have to fucking look?!

i gotta hand it to nankidai tbh - the way he writes female characters is leagues above how most male video game writers do it. there are still a few things that are somewhat problematic, but overall i respect that he eschews canned fanservicey personalities for them (looking at you, kodaka and uchikoshi) in favor of nuanced, strong character backgrounds and development. it’s already a big achievement that yttd’s protagonist is a girl who isn’t completely flakey/clueless, yet he went the extra mile to give kanna, nao, and reko agency over their own lives and sufferings. (not to mention the huge part the female floormasters played too!) it really made me happy to finally see female characters who were just as thought-out as the dudes instead of glorified vehicles for fanservice/gimmicks lol
#txt#yttd#yes i'm bitter about how the gals were handled in zero escape and dr#most games can't seem to understand that everybody is flawed and nuanced regardless of gender

How many Cinderella retellings have I read?
Cinder by Marissa Meyer
Cinder & Ella by Kelly Oram
Geekerella by Ashley Poston
Gilded Ashes by Rosamund Hodge
Just Ella by Margaret Peterson Haddix
Kilala princess (manga by Rika Tanaka and Nao Kodaka)
(Does the Selection series by Kiera Cass count?)
I even made countless reimaginings in my head and attempted to write a few of my own. Not postable though 😅
There are many other fairy tale (or not) retellings I've read that could be counted.
Am I bored yet? Not at all. Gimme more!
Suggestions please!

Everything You’re Not | Manami | 3.4 | RE: Nao, Bian, Germain, Theophania, Frank | ATTN: Vee
Detective Raphaella Ambrosius Costeau was considering all these new facts and perspectives with the thoughtful, seasoned eye of an ace attorney. Manami Kodaka, on the other hand, was 🤏 this close to collapsing for the second time in about as many hours. How nice it would have been if she could have just gone to her room and gone to sleep and woken up the next morning, rising to another memory wrenched from a fellow captive, one vicious cycle to avert another. She stares vacantly skywards, lost in thought for a moment.
Are you having fun right now? she wonders distantly. We’re just characters on a screen to you, so it doesn’t matter what we think or feel. Here you go, Your Majesty. Enjoy this true crime drama from the bottom and the top and the whole of everyone’s exposed hearts. Maybe she should have gone with Saichi Seihara for her detective name. The way they felt trapped, the way they knew they were being watched for entertainment, reminded her strongly of him.
There were still some mysteries to explore, though. Maybe she should just go over what she knows. When she levels her head to address the room again, she speaks with neither enthusiasm nor apprehension, only a deliberate, measured recitation of facts. Carefully, as to not let her feelings bleed through. Those won’t help anyone right now, least of all her. Everyone was telling her she should share her thoughts more, right? Well. Here they come.
“Just to make it really clear what I think. Nao isn’t covering for Bian. That doesn’t make sense. The argument hinges on, um, both the fact that Bian would attack Frank in the first place and that Nao was in on it, somehow. But it doesn’t line up with what I saw. Why would Nao leave for the dorms instead of sticking around as an extra set of eyes and hands? There’s no way they wouldn’t have, if, um, if it was Bian. Their actions don’t line up with that version of events.”
Next. The strength of her will holds her composure together, frantically, frenetically spot-spackling any cracks that threaten the facade. Oh, it’s a patchwork mess alright, one that will crumble spectacularly later, but she supposes she ought to consider herself lucky she can even visualize what ‘later’ looks like for her.
“And to back up Germain, Luz was one of the people in the library. She was leaving in that direction around when he says he saw her, the opposite of the direction Meili went. I’m comfortable vouching for her too. She would have had a really hard time making it to the third floor in time for, um, Shin’s alerts to start going off. I think it’s safe to say she wasn’t involved either.”
Manami’s starting to look a bit pale herself. Her expression cracks slightly hearing Frank just outright say he’d let Bian kill him. She doesn’t doubt that for a second, is the damn thing about it, neither her nor the Costeau character she’s starting to lose her grip on with every second of this trial that marches past. Harriet said they hadn’t talked much, not that they hadn’t talked at all. It wasn’t a contradiction. Everyone had been so ready to hold Harriet’s furry feet to the fire before and after she spoke up about her presence in the hidden room. It was no wonder that the specific little details of talking to Frank eluded her.
“Harriet probably just went to the secret room both to, um, cool off from all that and do what she came to do in the first place. Otherwise, I don’t think she would have had much opportunity to open the door at all. Unless you think that it got physical and she somehow opened the door in the middle of an altercation, I guess? Harriet’s really strong, but she’s kind of a glass cannon - and Theophania said she’s at full HP right now.”
She nods. That sounds about right to her. Harriet was not some sort of uniquely kickass supersoldier, and more importantly nor was she that kind of person. This she believes with her entire heart. This wouldn't be like last time, where having one slightly unusual, curt exchange with someone would be treated like a confession. Why would Perry talk to Frank? Why would Harriet talk to Frank? Why was any given exchange between two people something to be held up as damning evidence? People latched onto it last time. It was happening again. It would happen again. They were doomed to do this again and again and again and again and again. She takes a long, shaky breath in, pinprick tears threatening to spill over from her eyes and completely wreck the dam she was trying so, so hard to keep intact. This wasn’t about her, but… so many people had been telling her to think more about herself, what she wanted, what she needed, right? Maybe it would be okay. Maybe nobody would yell at her for asking or call her something unkind for being so fucking weak and stupid.
“... Sorry. This is unrelated, but, I- um. I’m.” Not okay. She was not okay. “I don’t feel so good. I can’t… think straight anymore. You said you were writing a letter, right, Vee? I know this is a really bad time, but… could I please see it? I… I think I’d appreciate-- I, I could use something like that right now.”
It’s a selfish thing for her to ask at this exact moment, to be given a little bit of hope, a little strength, a little something that nobody else would benefit from. Manami daring to do something like this for herself in the middle of a trial was as unlikely as ever, but Costeau might accept a little kindness on her behalf.
