I am not a beauty journalist but....the Nanokeratin system rules.

This is my wordy, but hopefully useful review of the Nanokeratin System hair treatment, designed to reduce frizz, but not straighten obstinate locks. 

When I was small, my hair was admittedly fine in texture, but long and straight. When I turned 13, puberty found another way to be cruel. It made the top half of my hair a total frizzy mess over night, but left the underside oddly unchanged. Bastard.  I bought my first frizz-tackling product from the Body Shop. Suddenly I realised the top half of my hair, and the underside to a lesser extent, was CURLY. How did that happen? Why? When you’re 13, puberty is already punching you in throat and you’re an unfortunate looking little soul, the last thing you need is for your hair to suddenly go mental.  Cue years and years of trying to sort out my soft, fuzzy mane. I tried it all, the 1990s classic Babyliss Straight and Shine steaming straightener, the one with a little water reservoir that invariably went green, John Frieda serum, pony tails with 78 hairbands all the way down to hold my hair in shape, braids, baseball caps, big round barrel brushes, trying to sleep without moving and with my wet hair tucked under me...

Latterly I tried the GHDs (to the detriment of a lot of my hair - huge chunks broke off from a lack of heat protection), keratin shampoos, an almighty haircut, leave-in treatments, and Easilock extensions.... All would work to an extent, until my hair got a whiff of moisture and *boing*, the top of it would go mental again.

I’d been toying with the idea of a Brazilian blow-dry, which promised smooth, shiny locks. But then stories of damaged hair and formaldehyde made me reconsider. Then I booked a keratin treatment with my local salon, Lisa Edwards in Chichester. 

My stylist Jonathan talked me through the system and off we went.

My hair was washed in the special shampoo twice, then rough dried by Jonathan. He couldn’t believe how frizzy it was! 

The special treatment is then brushed on like colour, left to soak for about 45 minutes and then the hair is dried with the product still on. 

Jonathan then straightened my hair, each area has to be gone over seven times to seal it in.  My hair looked fine, and was certainly very soft and sleek, but it did feel full of product.

You then need to leave it on for three days without washing. Also you mustn’t tie it up, let it get wet, or do anything to change its straightened shape. If something does happen though, just carefully run straighteners over it using a comb. 

After three days:

Day three arrives. My hair feels rank, but it’s still very straight. This day happens to coincide with an astonishingly bad hangover (See? You can still go out even with product-laden hair! I wore a beanie...) so the rinsing process wasn’t quite the careful procedure I’d hoped for.

It’s recommended you use sulfate-free and paraben-free shampoo and conditioner so it doesn’t strip the treatment away. I didn’t have this at the time so used a low-sulfate Tresemmé keratin shampoo and conditioner. 

The first thing I noticed was how different it felt when it was wet. It felt strong and it looked straight. I promptly fell back to sleep on my wet hair due to feeling like hell on legs, but I woke up to smooth hair with a gentle wave. Bliss.

The best thing about this treatment to date is how it has stayed this way. Two weeks on, with washing every two or three days, it still has a lovely defined wave and is about 80 to 90 per cent less frizzy. 

It straightens BEAUTIFULLY and only bloody stays straight! Even in damp air!

A day at the rugby in a beanie over the weekend would normally have created a smooth-under-the-hat-bushy-at-the-ends style, but alas, it was all straight and all smooth. 

I have however since purchased the Nanokeratin System Re-Enhance shampoo and the Re-Fine conditioner. I bought them online and both cost £32.50. Not too unlike other salon-quality products, though anything with no sulfates and parabens would be good. 

This treatment has actually changed my life, I know that sounds pathetic and dramatic and vacuous, but I now go out with my hair in its natural state, I am not damaging it with heat, it takes no time to get ready to go out, it might get a chance to grow long again and I don’t hate it any more.

It isn’t the cheapest treatment in the world, mine cost £152, but it does last 12 to 24 weeks. I’m not totally comfortable with the idea with the idea of being dependent on a pricey treatment, but there’s a chance it will become more manageable on its own in time, especially as it get longer and has more weight. But for the moment I am very much enjoying having hair that doesn’t go upwards.
