How I've Won NaNo - Rebel Style
National Novel Writing Month - NaNo - is an event in November where writers aim to write 50K words towards the first draft of a novel. But the traditional way doesn't work for everyone! This is my 14th NaNo, and here are ways I've won other than 50K on a novel.
50K of fanfic
50 hours spent editing a novel
Completing an editing pass of a 68K novel
Completing a novella (30-50K)
50 hours of brainstorming characters, worlds, plots in an effort to refill a dry well
Get Her Done - lining up a list of WIPs and completing as many as possible, adding anywhere from 5K to 25K words to a story
Yes, traditionally you win NaNo by writing a brand-spanking new novel, holding aloft your 1st draft at midnight Dec 1st. But there are so many other ways to win! The goal is to make progress on a writing project, whatever that may be.

Check-in for October 25th, 2023
Welp, The Present is a Gift has officially broken 8,000 words and is rapidly approaching the 10k mark! Also, fun fact: according to the outline, I haven't even finished writing the first chapter. This terrifies me when I consider the later chapters which have way more plot packed into them.
Despite me writing out a very detailed plan for the project, it feels like I'm learning new things about the characters with every sentence I write. Twig is apparently a big fan of learning weird, obscure words and is sad that her old hobby of reading dictionaries has been dampened by her struggling to learn how to read footprint runes. You think you know a gal...
I spent most of today working on programming assignments and even got a nice comment on a past submission I sent in. In it, I mentioned single vs. double equals signs always tripping me up and causing bugs in my code--- turns out they used to baffle my instructor too! He's able to use them in their proper places without thinking now, which is encouraging. Regardless, I have never felt this audio more keenly than today:
youtube
I had planned on getting some practice with 3D modeling for low-poly V-tuber of my persona I've been jokingly working on, but that didn't work out as anticipated. I did spend a while admiring how I went from a giant gray cube to this, though:
Ahhh. Look at that beautiful skeleton. So few polygons. So few worries. If only I could figure out how make the pupils move or make a bow.
I also spent a while reminiscing about how Blender lit up in flames at one point and I didn't understand why it happened or how I got it to stop. That was a fun seven minutes of unadulterated terror.
I'm tempted to get back into Blockbench for its simple UI, but after learning the basics of Blender, I know it'd be unbearable to return to the rigidity of working in a program that's pretty much built for Minecraft modders. I just need to stick with Blender and find a few more tutorials to keep me going.
I will miss the fact that Blockbench automatically puts your model on a turntable and offers to pixelate it for you, though. It makes low poly modeling so cool so fast.
Just look at these things! They're so cool! I made them yet they look like something out of my fave childhood video games!
I tried to figure out Super Mario Paint this morning and ended up with my first finished song from that program. Tried importing a few soundfonts from other sources but had no luck getting them to work, and the song was definitely rough around the edges--- but I'm still really proud of myself for making a quick tune! It was a battle to figure out how to export the finished product, and I ended up just recording my desktop with OBS to get it to capture the sound and video together, then converted that video into an MP3 file. It was a very roundabout process, but still!!! I made a thing!
The Shy Guy and Boo instruments, as their flawless character designs may have you suspect, are vastly superior to everything else contained in the program. You can't change my mind.
Also, I was tinkering around with Chrome Extensions and found the most heartbreaking note in the description for one of them.
Tiny Sidebar developer, whoever you are, wherever you are--- I want to give you a hug and a slice of cake or two. Reading this activated my inner anime protagonist and I want you to know that there are so many good people out there, but they're quiet about their goodness. Bad people are just loud as heck and make scenes wherever they go.
With that sudden sappiness, I'm signing off on this check-in. Take a parting teaser for a future joke animatic as a palette cleanser. Depressed Friend will be Twig, Emotionally Stable Friend will be Celebi.
Sincerely, Sofie

I am doing nanowrimo this year, but like, in the least faithful iteration where I'm working on a fanfic I'd already started and not sticking to a word count goal either. I'm using the general nano vibe as motivation to spend time with my project every day this month, and I'm not gonna set any other project benchmark goals for myself. Just gonna soak in the vibes and spend time with the fic.
#THAT BEING SAID#the solution to a problem in the chapter I'd been working on just appeared fully formed in my head in the shower this morning#so happy nano 1st to me#fanfic#writing#scribbles' scribbles#nanowrimo#nano rebel

Dia 25 = 2.016 palavras
47.041 | 94.08%
HEHEHEHEHEHHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE
Enfim, to feliz.

Prompt 15: Faith Doritole
This is my NaNoRebel thing for 2023. I explain what it is here. The prompts are here.
FROM THE WEIRD ART NEWSLETTER:
Okay, so this in the entire story of the Faith Doritos saga as it presently stands:
HARDCORE releases their work Faith Doritos in cooperation with the Museum. It's a bag of Doritos that, if used as the host in a Catholic mass, will spontaneously transform into human flesh. This is based on some old Catholic copypasta. However, the spell only works if the mass is performed perfectly, including having to be presided by a currently practicing Catholic clergyman. Or rather, many bags, which you can buy at the Museum's gift shop. Religious critics take umbrage at the piece's heresy; non-religious critics take umbrage at how edgy it is but let it slide because it's hilarious.
Doritos sues the Museum. They are forced to change the piece's name to Faithoritos and they cannot use store-bought Doritos any more. HARDCORE has to redo the entire spell on thousands of bags. The Museum's head chef steps out and creates a Doritos replacement. Surprising, a five-star chef take on Doritos is absolutely delicious and much better than the real thing. Some people buy it just to eat despite it being incredibly expensive.
Years later, a group of "influencers" are the first to actually set up a complete Catholic mass using Faith Doritos Faithoritos as the host. They used a priest who suspected he would be expelled from the church. It was because of the cliché reason you're thinking of. The Faithorito fails to transform into flesh.
The influencers and some art collectors sue HARDCORE and The Museum, stating the piece was false advertisement. Some suggest that HARDCORE simply slipped up while recasting the spell because of the short timeframe. A different set of "influencers" somehow manage to set up a second mass using the original run of Faith Doritos and it works as advertised.
After a protracted trial, a thaumaturgical analyst discovers that the exact same spell had been cast on Faithoritos as on original Faith Doritos. However, part of the spell's checks to see if it's an actual Catholic mass included the material of the host. Apparently, store-bought Doritos have enough corn start in them that whatever source they used for the spell considers it bread. The Museum's chef's more elaborate recipee, however, was not. So the reason the Faithoritos didn't turn into human flesh is that it wasn't being used in a completely proper Catholic mass, and the reason it wasn't a completely proper Catholic mass is that it was using Faithoritos as a host.
This is the entire story, and that's all I have for you this week. This week's video is quite apt for the subject at hand. Be well, artwatchers.

Hey! Hey mutuals! Are you doing NaNoWriMo this month? Please be my buddy! We can be unhinged about word counts together for the next 29 days!
I even made a silly little cover for my silly little BG3 fanfic that is already over 56k words long! I have never written anything at this scale before and I'm very excited to keep up the momentum this month.

Talvez a última redição.
To doida pra escrever logo o livro 2, mas preciso reditar o 1 primeiro.
E é isso...
It’s that time of year again!

NaNo 2023 Wrap-Up
I “won”. I finished on a 10k day, I reached 130k for the project and I didn’t still finish my project. There’s a part of me that’s disappointed that I didn’t finish it, but I’m close, progress was made and I was deep in the depths of experimentation. Scriptwriting isn’t something that comes naturally to me, it does require more thought and I always knew that finishing the project was going to be…

NaNoWriMo
So far, here's the score:
Spent the day fussing around trying to create an appropriate writing space at home and locate notes I needed. No dice. Did find the 2020 stickers package, though. Also the notes for Black & Gold, so maybe I can finish that.
Managed to get to the Kick-Off, but arrived 25 minutes late because GPS tricked me into heading for a different Barnes & Noble.
This is the first Kick-Off for this region that I didn't plan since 2006 (my first NaNo was 2005; I started hosting KickOffs in 2007 and I started MLing in 2009. I think 2021 was my last year MLing. Pandemic time is kind of a crapshoot in figuring things out.
Even though the 2006 one included three people glaring at me for a duration of time when they found out I write fanfiction as they sat and discussed earlier that evening that they did not think fanfiction was real writing--I still enjoyed that KickOff more than the one this evening.
The lights were bright, one of them was flashing, there was bad jazz music (and I'm a jazz musician, so I can confirm this was bad jazz) playing, electrical outlets were kind of sketchy business, and tables were tiny so basically one person per table. It was nice to see some of the long timer crew there, but I could not make words happen. In fact, I wrote two words down, then erased both of them, and crossed off a date on the page, so I think I'm at -1/50,000 right now. Pretty sure that is the opposite of what I should be doing.
Ditched early with the two other ex-MLs for the region when the host for this KickOff left (and the host was not a current ML; the current MLs were elsewhere, which is such a foreign concept for me to not be at the official KickOff, but it made me feel not bad about leaving and also helped me feel like I did a pretty good job all those years of MLing).
Did I mention there was a flashing light? Also, we were in the middle of the store, first floor, and could be looked down at from the mezzanine. Felt very 'look at the authors'-ish. Left with a headache. Smaug did find a Metallica CD, though.
As we got to the car, found that someone placed a glass bottle purposely next to my rear tire under the car in a way that had I not seen it I would have driven over it going either forward or back. Kicked it out and went on our way, but wtf? Do not try to hurt my FINROD car. Not happy with those shenanigans.
Went to Dave & Busters. Had a GREAT private KickOff party with the other ex-MLs. I have a orange sparkly rubber duckie, and Nui and I both got on the high score board for the axe throwing game. (Also: we were both VERY good at axe throwing for having never thrown axes before.)
Came home with the intention of writing. Had an Irish Cream Hot Cocoa. Yeah, writing did not happen--drank cocoa while scrolling The Tumbler.
End of Day One:
-1/50,000 Words
676 D & B Tickets
42 miles driven
1 Rubber Duckie
#nanowrimo#tempted to not write anything else and end the month with a negative word count#my average is 20 days; my best was 10 so it's still doable but idk ending with a negative number is next level nano rebel

NaNo update: I've managed a bit of writing and a bit more thinking about the project every day so far! This is my goal - I'm not sticking to a word count goal because that has not been good for me in the past.
I've added 1402 words so far this month (and I'm probably not done for today), and they're mostly in a chapter I have been struggling with so they are Words of Inflated Importance.
How's everyone else doing, NaNo or otherwise, rebel or regular NaNo?

NaNoWriMo's shaping up to be different this year bc I'm too lazy to commit to a whole new plot and outline (and as a planner I will regret this). But I do have constant whump brainrot, so the current strategy is to write as many scene/story ideas with Bad Things Happen Bingo tropes as I can and hope that the prompt hoard will sustain me through the month.
#phoenix screams into the void#also being a rebel and aiming for either writing every day and/or a 30k wordcount by the end of the month#and then just putting in a fake wordcount if i accomplish that#listen i've won ten nanos in a row i'm entitled to an eleventh one at a discount#yes i am insane thank you for asking

Deixei pra ganhar o NaNo hoje.
E GANHEEEEI! :D
50.159 palavras.
GANHEI O NANO AAAAAAAAAAAAAA
E NO MEU ANIVERSÁRIO
finalmente um 28 de novembro realmente especial :D
