Sedo Namahage Festival

Wah lagi-lagi kembali dengan festival yang diadakan di prefektur Akita. Festival Sedo Namahage merupakan kombinasi dari ritual kepercayaan Shinto yang diadakan pada tanggal 3 Januari di Kuil Shinzan, Kota Oga. Festival Namahage ini sudah ada sejak tahun 1964.

Asal kata Namahage ini berawal ketika musim dingin para warga menghabiskan waktu yang lama diperapian sehingga tangan dan kaki menjadi melepuh, Dalam aksen Akita, disebut sebagai Namomi (Kulit yang mengelupas) , kemudian seiring berjalannya waktu, kata tersebut menjadi Namahage.

Festival tradisional yang memiliki perpaduan andara Namahage, tradisi rakyat  dimulai dengan anak laki laki tampil dengan menggunakan masker iblis yang disucikan oleh seorang pendeta shinto, kemudian menjadi Namahage, dan mereka turun dari gunung dengan membawa kue ketan, setelah itu festival Sedo Namahage pun dimulai. 15 pemain Namahage menari dengan iringan drum yang sangat dinamis.

Uniknya festival ini, pada malam sebelum tahun baru, para pemuda dari berbagai desa Oga, menggunakan topeng Namahage pergu mengelilingi rumah penduduk sambil berteriak keras keras “ 泣く子はいねがぁ “(Apakah ada anak yang menangis disini?) , festival ini dilakukan dengan harapan agar membawa perlindungan dari penyakit, bencana, panen makanan yang banyak.

They look like oni, with bright red or blue skin, wild hair and eyes, large mouths full of sharp teeth, and often have horns sprouting from their forehead. INTERACTIONS: Once a year, during koshōgatsu—the first full moon of the New Year—the namahage descend from the mountains to scare villagers. Despite their ferocious appearance and behavior, they are actually well-meaning yōkai.
