Daughter of Wind and Lightning
Summary: When the moment came to decide upon a name Bellemere chose Nami. It seemed fitting for a girl who seemed destined from birth for the sea. Word Count: 2200 Rating: Gen AO3
The baby was smiling when Nojiko found her. Somehow, amongst the destruction of the city, this tiny scrap of humanity was able to laugh. Nojiko—tired, afraid, scarcely more than a baby herself—didn’t understand it. All day and night the air had boomed like thunder, and now wind whipped around air brimming with gunsmoke and ash. But still in the corner of a ruined house the baby babbled happily, pink round cheeks smudged with dirt, the stink of blood all around.
The sky was dark with rain. There were no grownups around to call to. Not wanting the baby to die, Nojiko picked it up and cradled it clumsily against her chest. The baby cooed and pulled her hair, and despite herself, Nojiko laughed too.
In the distance real thunder rolled. Or maybe it was more guns. Nojiko didn’t know, and she didn’t want to find out, so she hurried onward, grateful that she was no longer alone to face the coming storm.
xxx
Bellmere didn’t have any real plan other than to make it home. It was easy enough to slip away before representatives of the World Government came around to clean up the mess she left behind. Duty demanded she stay, but after experiencing the horrors of war firsthand Bellemere was of the opinion duty could go fuck itself. Her comrades were dead. The people she was meant to protect were dead. The enemy was dead.
All that was left were two little girls who demanded that she not add to all the dying, and Bellemere chose them over the marines. She would have chosen them over the world, over life itself.
The frantic flight to Cocoyashi took them into the teeth of the oncoming storm. Rain fell in sheets, cold and sharp as knives against her skin. The children she kept huddled best she could under her oiled officer’s coat, itself sliced to ribbons over the course of the battle.
With every flash of lightning Nojiko cried and screamed and clutched at Bellmere’s legs. Between her and the babe in her arms, Bellemere was barely able to keep her sloop on course for home. Any words of comfort were swallowed by the howling wind before they could bridge the gap between woman and girl. Bellemere, exhausted, injured, and desperate, couldn’t even find the energy to curse the cruelty of the sea.
A streak of white-hot light flashed directly overhead. The sky shook with thunder so strong even Bellmere was forced to hunker down. Nojiko clung to Bellmere, and Bellmere clung to the baby, and in that moment she was once again sure that she was going to die failing to protect the innocents under her care.
In her ear, over the shrieking wind and crash of the sea, the baby bubbled with laughter. Bellemere looked down at the child and saw her staring straight up at the sky, and swore she saw sparks still dancing in her wide, dark eyes.
Unnerved and amazed, Bellmere turned her attention back to the wheel. In the future, when she was rested and recovered, she would dismiss the moment as a flight of imagination made by a half-delirious mind. After all, she and the children both reached Cocoyashi sick and dying. There was no way anyone, let alone a babe, could laugh through one of the worst storms Bellemere had ever seen.
But the memory stuck with her, and when the moment came to decide upon a name Bellemere chose Nami. It seemed fitting for a girl who seemed destined from birth for the sea.
xxx
Sometimes, when Bellmere was busy and at her wit’s end with the responsibility of taking care of two rambunctious little girls, Genzo would take the children on little day vacations. This mostly consisted of having them run around town causing mayhem and terror like their mother before them, but Genzo would occasionally give them pocket money for treats and toys he knew Bellmere couldn’t afford. He avoided Bellmere’s accusations of charity by having the girls do odd jobs for both himself and others in town, but compared to the labors of the tangerine grove these trifles were nothing. More than once Genzo heard the girls giggling conspiratorially on how they’d gotten the better deal in the exchange. Little did they know.
Together Nojiko and Nami bought cheap dolls, spinning tops, and bright satin ribbons—the sort of ordinary treasures girls that age were drawn to like a fly to the flame. Sometimes, when they were getting along well enough, they would pool their money for books. Nami in particular was a ravenous reader, outstriping both Genzo and Bellemere’s ability to satiate her thirst for knowledge. While there was a school on the island, Bellemere couldn’t afford the fees for both girls, and rather than send one and deprive the other, she ended up teaching the two of them at home, using the same set of books for the both.
If Bellemere or Nojiko realized how unusual it was for Nami to keep up with a sister two years her senior they never mentioned it. Nami herself would brag about finishing her reading assignments ahead of Nojiko for exactly as long as it took Nojiko to slap her upside the head, Nami’s crows of victory lost in the ensuing scuffle.
But the day Nami came back from town with a small tin boat was the day that Genzo realized there was something more to her thirst for knowledge. The toy was a small clockwork, meant for putzing around the bathtub after a few cranks of a key. Nami sat on Genzo’s knee and proceeded to rattle off all the different parts of the ship from keel to mast, explaining in excruciating detail what each did.
Genzo knew for a fact that Nami had not been on a ship since she arrived on Cocoyashi. Like any good island girl she got in her fair share of swimming and earned each of her innumerable freckles honestly by spending the majority of her days out in the sun. But Bellmere had explicitly forbidden the girls from going out to sea until they were older, and on this bit of parenting she and Genzo were in agreement. Bellemere hadn’t even told them about her time with the marines.
When he asked how she learned about ships, Nami smiled radiantly and said she’d listened to the fishermen as they brought in their catches. She then asked if she were allowed to play with her boat outdoors later that afternoon, and when a baffled Genzo said that she may, that smile grew bright as the sun shining above their heads.
“Good, because it’s going to rain, and I want to try it in some real water.”
Which was how a bemused Genzo had to explain to a furious Bellmere why her daughter returned home wet and filthy after playing sailor in the mud puddles behind the house. It hadn’t seemed right to say no when he’d already given permission, and they both had to agree that the girl had an uncanny knack for predicting the weather.

It was one of the great ironies of both their lives that Arlong was the one who taught Nami how to sail. The captain of the Arlong Pirates captured her for a reason, and he didn’t have the patience to let her rot at Arlong Park when he could get more value out of her otherwise.
She was too small to be truly useful at first, weak and trembling when she thought they couldn’t see and spitting fire when she thought they were. The girl child reminded him of a trapped kitten, all hisses and claws and bristling fur, but ultimately too weak to defend itself from harm. She was so different from the other human girl he’d once known, and there was some distant part in Arlong’s mind that was glad. Her coppery hair, likewise kissed by the sun, was almost too much to bear, and her fiery disposition amused him where the pathetic mewling more common to the inferior races would have sent him into a murderous rage.
And she was useful. Or at least her small, clever hands were. One of the first things the girl did was demand books, which Arlong gladly provided. She used the information inside to draw her first sea charts. Arlong’s practiced eye could see the hesitancy in her lines, but the information was good. She knew what would happen if it wasn’t.
But books could only get her so far, and before long Arlong decided to take her on an expedition. He gave broad lessons but left the minutiae of teaching her sailcraft to Hatchi and the rest, watching out of the corner of his eye in case she threatened to jump ship.
She picked up the basics easily, but in those first years was too small to do much good. Arlong put her to work as the crew’s chore girl instead, taking obscene delight in ordering her from task to task, careful to break her of bad habits and the idea of sabotaging his burgeoning empire. More than once she tried to kill him with the efficiency of a ghat fighting a maelstrom. Arlong humored these attempts, for what kitten didn’t occasionally try to scratch its master. Only once did she dare falsify one of Arlong’s precious charts, and he made sure she never did again.
But the thing about kittens was that they grew up to be cats, and cats were independent creatures who liked to pretend that they owned the world. Or in this case, Arlong’s ship. Nami became so comfortable at sea that Arlong occasionally wondered if she had saltwater in her veins instead of blood, or if perhaps an ancestor or two had come from Fishman Island, because he could think of no other explanation for the prodigious talent he'd stumbled upon in the backwaters of the East.
The East Blue was a puddle compared to the Grand Line, but by god it was a puddle that Nami mastered. Arlong could see it in the way she tasted the wind and read the stars, how she soon outstripped even veteran navigators of the Grand Line. Arlong took credit for her skill even as he hated her for it. Hated that a mere human would encroach on the domain of fishmen. Hated that he needed her clever human hands and her clever human mind. Hated the days at sea the light hit the copper of her hair just right and made it glow like the sun.
Nami was thirteen years old when Arlong gifted her with a boat, a nimble little sloop that could easily be manned by a single person. He told himself and his crew that it was an investment, that she would be far more efficient in her labor alone, but the reality was if the girl had a ship of her own she would stay the hell off of his, and the less time he would be forced to spend sailing with a daughter of wind and lightning.
Oh how he hated her, hated that he needed her. But none of that mattered, so long as she stayed kneeled at the foot of his throne, the one useful human in all the world in fulfilling his ambition. Fishman mastered the seas and Arlong would master Nami, and with her power under his command his empire would reign forever.
xxx
Luffy noticed it immediately. Nami had a way of moving with ships. She matched the rock of the sea and never lost her balance once, not even when the waves started to chop or she had to run from one end to the other to stop him and Zoro from doing something stupid. Luffy noticed because it’d been tricky at first, for him. But nothing about the sea seemed to trick Nami. Even at its most playful, the ocean never managed to one-up her. The idea of it made Luffy laugh, and when Nami asked what was so funny he wasn’t able to explain. It just was, just like Nami’s trickfulness just was.
And just like the sea, that playfulness could turn to fury in an instant, but that made Luffy laugh, too. She was just the same in so many ways, and it’s what made her a good navigator. She understood the beats and the rhythms of the water and managed to dance with the sea. Shanks had told him so many stories of men who died trying to conquer the ocean, but Nami wasn’t a fighter. She moved with the wind, guided by the clouds and the currents. She respected the fickleness of the sea and romanced it into doing her bidding.
Luffy had already decided she would be the navigator of the King, but watching her move only solidified that decision, because only someone who loved the sea could be so beloved in return. She would screech and howl like a hurricane when afraid, but once she set her mind to go to a place there wasn’t a force in the world strong enough to stop her.
It was his job to free her enough to not fear. He’d decided that, too, about the same time he knew he would have no one else to guide him through the Grand Line. And when a smile finally stretched across her face and she truly laughed for the first time…
It was like some part of her unlocked deep inside, something wild and untamed and free. The wind swept through her hair and the seeds of lightning sparkled in her eyes, and Luffy couldn’t help but laugh, too.

-----------------------
|Chapter Two|
{Present- After 2 Years}
"Y/N-chan sweetie, wake up, its breakfast time". You woke up from your slumber at the light tapping on your shoulder, follwed by a soothing voice full of warmth. Your heavy eyelids glanced at it, looking in confusion, trying to process the surroundings after a deep sleep. "Oh...Sanji...good morning" you said as you rubbed your eyes to have a better vision as you sat up. Sanji leaned to give you a gentle forehead kiss, brushing off the messy hairlines from your face, placing them behind your ears. "Its seems that you slept well, princess" as he gave you a smile, you nodded with a sleepy chuckle and asked, "have we reached a new island?", "Not yet, Nami-san said according to the current weather, we might need few more hours" replied Sanji. Few minutes later, making sure that you're fully awake, Sanji left to the kitchen leaving you to dress up.
After getting dressed up, you walked up to the deck heading to the kitchen, pushing the door open, you were greeted by the delicious food scent. You made your way straight to the bar and sat as Sanji served your plate infront of you, "What about the others?" You asked, "Oh they already ate, since you overslept a little, I saved these for you" he answered with a gentle smile finishing what he had on his hands. Both of you and Sanji went out to the others once you finished your meal, and it was super chaotic as usual thanks to your captain Luffy.
That's right, though 2 years have already passed since the outbreak & Umberlla's incident at Raccoon city Island, it was just few weeks later when you met Luffy and the others, and officially became one of the Strawhats pirates. Leon was able to bring you back to your island safely, in which you returned to your daily activities. However, back at that time, Leon had to leave to make few more investigations about the outbreak, and as mentioned earlier, you went back to your normal life, hoping to overcome what have you witnessed and went through. After all, that wasn't something anyone could encounter everyday, I mean come on, they were Zombies. It was only the beginning of the year, when Luffy and the others showed up on your island, you were heading back home from the grocery store. They stood in the middle of the road, and that's why they caught your attention, their chaotic attitude made all eyes on them.
You watched them as you walked, giggling at the stupid things that the trio did, it was just then when you bumped into someone, making all of your groceries fall on the ground, you apologized immediately, since its your fault for not paying attention to the way. "I'm really sorry-", "Are you hurt miss?" He asked, face totally concerned as he helped you pick up the groceries. "I'm fine, thank you so much", you shyly replied. You have to admit, he was handsome and a gentleman, usually people snap on others once they bump into them, throwing the blame on other either they're on fault or not, but the man standing infront of you seemed different, you can feel that he's harmless, you stared at him for few minutes that he almost thought that he something on his face.
"Mmm..Miss?" He called, that's when realization hit you, making you embarrassed at your action, "Oh..I'm so sorry ....its Y/N..You can call me Y/N" you said, "Y/N-chan...what a beautiful name you have, nice to meet you, I'm Sanji" he smiled as he kissed your knuckles making you bashful. Soon your attention went back again to the trio, one had a Strawhat on his head and seemed energetic, another had a long nose and an afro, and the last one was surprisingly a talking rindeer. They were running chaotically around making you chuckle again, when you heard a deep sigh from Sanji, "Do you know them?" You asked, "Yeah, they're my friends, you're not going to believe this but, the one with a Strawhat is my Captain", he explained, "Your captain?", you questioned "Ah yes... We're pirates, and he's our captain, I'm sure you heard of Monkey.D.Luffy", he said.
Luffy... you're pretty sure that you saw this name somewhere in the newspaper , a young man who is making several unexpected achievements on different islands which weren't approved by the Marines the world's government, but you could care less about pirates at that time, they weren't just a part of your current interest. "Oh, so you're the famous Strawhat Pirates, you guys don't seem scary as the news say", you joked, "Of course not, as you can see, we're pretty much a group of chaotic friends with abilities", "Yeah I can tell" you giggled at him. You noticed that reddish faint on his cheeks, which made you blush too. Silence fell over for few minutes, both of you sharing adorable glances when the other is not looking, and Sanji decided to gather his courage attempting to make the first move. "If you're free, would you like to join us at dinner?", He asked and you glanced at him, unsure if you should really trust him or not, but you decided to give it a try, if anything goes wrong, then you'll think how to deal with, I mean, they can't be scarier than the undeads right?
By the end of the day, you could admit that it was your first time having so much fun after a long time, these pirates were nothing like what the news said about them, Sanji was right, they were totally a bunch of chaotic friends with abilities. Speaking of Sanji, you couldn't get your eyes off his trace during the time you spent with them that day, the way talked, the way he acted, the way he cooked putting up his sleeves revealing those veins, he was just so perfect. Amazingly, you got along well with the Strawhats during their stay on your island as you spent every single day at their ship, and you're not going to lie, being with them was just something effortlessly extraordinary on your boring daily routine and you liked it.
Finally, it was the day where the Strawhats are going to set sail away from your island, continuing their adventures journey in this huge sea, and you should admit, you're going to miss them, why the people you liked had to always leave you like that, you wondered. Standing infront of Sunny go, trying to contain the farewell tears inside, especially for a certain blonde, that you built a crush over during that short time. The Strawhats stood up there on the deck, looking at you with a pained expression, they liked you, and they wanted to stay with you longer, but the log pose decided that its time to departure, which is why you are standing on the edge of the shore infront of the ship.
"Well, I guess its a goodbye then..I hope you all achieve your dreams and stay safe" your voice unintentionally cracking
"Y/N! Stay safe and let's meet again!!" Exclaimed Choppr & Usopp in tears
You nodded in a sad smile, looking at Luffy who was silent for the whole time. The ship began to slowy sail further and further, away from the shores that you stood on. You knew very well, that you won't ever see them again any sooner, you didn't want to have any regrets left for not confessing to Sanji about your feelings, so you cupped your palms around your mouth and screamed, " SANJI!!!" , Sanji turned around to look towards your direction, " I LOVE YOU AND I'LL NEVER FORGET YOU!!!." Sanji stood there in shock, unable to even reply to your confession, You stopped taking one more deep breath...
"AND YOU GUYS!!! THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING, I'LL MISS YOU SO MUCH!! PLEASE REMEMBER THAT I'LL BE ON YOUR SIDE NO MATTER WHAT!!", You finished as you panted heavily after screaming your lungs out.
Luffy raised his face, looking towards you with wide eyes, running towards the wooden barrier, this time ready to scream his lungs out. "Y/N!!!!!!", He called out and you stood there making sure to hear what he says in between the sound of the rocking waves, "WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE MY NAKAMA????!!" He asked , and your eyes widened, not believing what you just heard. All what spun inside of your head were doubts, were you good enough to be with them? Is it okay for someone as weak as you to be with them? No, you shouldn't be thinking like that, you promised yourself that you'll get stronger after Racoon city's incident, you wanted to brag to Leon the next time you meet him, that you were no more that Y/N that needs help, but can offer her help without being a obstacle. You fixed your posture and gathered your palms around your mouth once again and yelled, "YES, LUFFY PLEASE TAKE ME WITH YOU!!!". With his contagious laugh, he stretched his arms towards you and pulled you to Sunny Go as a new member of the Strawhats pirates. Of course little you knew that the blonde built some feeling for you after the legendary confession, making the two of you an adorable couple after a short while.
Going back to the present where you dressed up and walked to the chaotic deck. Inhaling the fresh ocean scent, Sanji stood behind you, wrapping his arms around your waist, and you caressed them, "If the next island was suitable for a date, then would like to go on one my lady?". You Chuckled as you turned your head to him, giving a quick peek on his cheeks. "Of course, I would love to my gentlemen". Hearing a loud 'Ehum' next to you, you watched Nami approaching the two of you, "Sorry to interrupt your Lovey-dovey moment, but can you keep an eye on the weather Please? I need to check something in the library", "Y-Yeah sure, go ahead" you said as you tried to hide your blushed cheeks at Nami's statement earlier.
"Then I'll go prepare some snacks for us, I'll catch up with you later my darling", stated Sanji as he disappeared to the kitchen. You walked downstairs, saw Robin swinging as she read a book, Brook was playing amusing melodies, Franky & Zoro were chilling drinking some Sake and Cola, Jimbie was keeping an eye on the rudder, while Luffy, Usopp & and Chopper were finishing. Time flies fast, and two hours have already passed since then, Sanji already came back handing all of you some snacks, However, Nami was still at the library, and as you promised, you kept an eye on the weather, it was all fine until you noticed some grayish clouds in the horizon, there was no sign of lightings, or raging waves, but these clouds approched faster and faster, this had you worried, because you could sense something weird in the atmosphere. You got up, heading to the library where Nami was sitting, "Where are you going princess?" Asked Sanji as he smoked his cigarette, "I see some clouds approaching, I need to infrom Nami" you smiled as you walked. Opening the Library's door, you found the Navigator immersed in the tons of books infront of her.
" I can see why you were so silent for the past two hours, are you looking for something?" You asked
"Oh Hey Y/N, well yeah...I sensed something weird in the weather earlier, but I didn't really figure out what is it...so I came here to look into the books if I can find something about it ..But unfortunately i couldn't" she pouted
"Speaking of weird things..." You said
"Hmmm? Is there something wrong Y/N?"
"Well, its the weather...some grayish clouds suddenly appeared in the horizon, but its kinda moving towards us in an abnormal speed, but..."
"But?"
"The weirdest part is that there isn't any sign of lightings and I couldn't sense any wind, nor the waves were raging, I felt like I should let you know"
"Alright, I'll check it out, Let's go"
You and Nami came out of the Library, Straightly looking up to the sky, you tapped on her shoulder.
"Can you feel it? It feels kinda gloomy isn't it?" you claimed
"Yeah...this is same thing that I was looking for in the books...I've never seen this sort of gloominess in the weather before..." She stated with serious expression
"I wonder what is waiting ahead for us" you thought out aloud
It was soon, when both of you and Nami heared the Fishing Trio Terrifyingly screaming, running to them, Usopp and Chopper were standing far away shaking in fear, the rest stood in defensive positions, while Luffy and his two wings were observing the thing infront of them in disbelief.
"What happened?!!" Exclaimed Nami in fret
Your eyes searched for the source of fear, until it landed on the thing settling infront the monster trio, "W-what the hell is that thing" you pointed out disgusted. " Nami!Y/N! Dont get close" alreted Luffy to both of you, "Oi curly brows, What in the world is this?" Asked Zoro to the blonde who shrugged his shoulders, "Don't ask me, I've never seen or read about this sort of fishes before" astonished Sanji. "But what is that thing on the grass?" Asked Brook, "Its my blood, I scratched myself while I was backing of this thing" cracked Usopp.
Although you were disgusted by the way that fish looked, I mean its out of the water, but its still moving like its in it, your eyes kept on observing it, and without feeling it, your curiousity led your legs to slowy walk towards the fish. You noticed how it had milky eyes, sharp teeth, pale skin and dried blood, over all of that, it was eating Usopp's flesh that scattered on the grass. Seeing all of this got you a Deja Vu as you now fully standing infront of it.
"Y/N-chan babe, Don't get close to it-" said Sanji making you realize how close you're to the creature. Within seconds, you found yourself attacked by it as your friends called out your name, the fish tried to bite any reachable part of your body, as you held it substantially betwen your hands, you screamed as a reaction, unable to protect yourself with both of your hand that were currently occupied with this ugly creature.
-Slash-
You saw Zoro torning up the fish apart , making it fall next to you still moving like nothing just happened, you rolled away a little, trying to think how to get rid of it then, Leon's voice echoed in your head. "Aim to its head, it kills it instantly", without thinking much, you pulled out your dagger and shoved it in the creature's brain, in which it finally stopped moving. You panted heavily as your body shaked, glancing at the fish, making sure that its dead, you slid your fingers in your hair in frustration, Sanji drew next to you extending his arms and placing the other on your back rubbing circles to calm you down, " Are you okay sweetheart?" He asked in concern, you nodded with a slight Smile, bracing yourself on him to get up on your feets. "Let me see" turned you Sanji to him, making sure that you're not injured, then pulling you into a warm hug. "May I have your attention please" exclaimed Jimbie from where he was standing.
Everyone's gaze shifted from you to Jimbie, "I see an island ahead" he stated, making your captain jump in excitement, heading to his favorite seat like a 5 years old. Everyone else followed behind their captain curious to see their next stop, while you stood there, engrossed in your deep thoughts. Two years ago as you tried to escape Raccoon city, Leon told you to aim the undead's head to kill them instantly, at least to protect yourself in case he wasn't able to help you, But out of everything he said that night, why did this line specifically echoed inside your head when you fought the fish?.
You felt your hand being enveloped with warmth, you glanced at your boyfriend who was staring at you with concern, " Are you sure you're okay? You've been acting weird ever since this creature appeared on the deck" he said as he carresed your cheeks, "I'm fine sweetie, don't worry, I was just thinking" you squeezed his hand to reassure him. Sunny Go docked close enough to the shores, taking the mini merry on two turns to reach the land, everyone except for Jimbie and Franky stayed on the ship just in case.
After the nine of you made it successfully to the land, You stood there looking around the place while having so many questions and thoughts. Its is now the time to start walking inside the mysterious island on your feets.

Hibari Headcanons
that nobody asked for
He likes small animals but not your usual small animals. (The way he kicked uri out in the future instead of letting the cat stay 😭) I.e he’d pick a sugar glider over a guinea pig
He hates crowds because he still hates the fact that when he was still learning to be sociable kids had the power of alienating him. He despises that group mindset that children had. In kindergarten some kids invited him to play then told him to get lost and nobody stood up for him. He has one intrusive thought and it’s that feeling. He genuinely hates crowds because it feels like an opportunity for people to get to decide who isn’t welcomed. He lowkey doesn’t want to witness that moment to happen to anyone else.
His overthinking only stops when he’s alone so he genuinely does prefer it. He doesn’t mind one or two people in an intimate setting but when it’s more he wants to disconnect.
He’s all about repaying debts quickly I think he takes this on an emotional level too so he feels if you get too close or kind he has to return that by being transparent as well and he knows he’s bad at it so he just stops you altogether by not letting you even create that environment around him. I.e in the future he’s fine in the hospital room then more people come and he warns Tsuna then beats his ass because it was getting too emotional seeing ppl visit chrome when he just wanted to check on her from afar and not hear everyone’s emotions.
He takes pictures of random things , like a leaf with water droplets, clouds from Nami middles roof , his sneakers when he’s walking. They’re not amazing but he just always does it and never shares. It’s kind of grunge but unintentionally.
He has a knack for throw blankets. He has one in every room they’re mostly black white or purple no designs except for the ones from his grandparents.
If you have ever watched Saiki k I think he has the exact same relationship with his parents. If you haven’t : he’s serious and reserved and willingly antisocial but not because of trauma and his parents are so normal and caring it’s funny in contrast. But they’re a tad bit more refined than saikis.
He was partly raised by his grandparents when he was much younger and that’s why he really loves tradition and order while his parents are hardly as strict.
His grandfather was probably a vet who joined solely to protect Namimori . Hibari has that same love for the town because of him but like his grandfather he’s in no way patriotic. They both just love this town He thinks of his grandfather when he thinks of Namimori and because he is gone now he latches on to the town even more.
His grandfather is Fon. Hear me out. Fon could have been around 40 when he was cursed , could’ve had a son young (18) but it was fine because he was a very well respected champion. The Hibaris had money and as long as he was a positive image in his career field they wouldn’t mind what he did although their lineage is that of leaders and scholars. He stopped for a bit to go into the army and when he came back he stumbles upon the mafia . His son grows up to also have a kid young Fon and his wife watch after Hibari until he’s around 7 while his son and daughter in law work extremely hard to get established in their career paths. They come back and one day Fon just vanished bc he’s cursed and hibaris dad knows he was in the mafia so he just doesn’t dwell on what might have happened but doesn’t share because he didn’t want to pain him as a bad guy to his son but they’re all pretty upset about it.
Fon taught hibari how to fight , that’s why he has his grandfathers disposition and tenacity although it’s a tad immature in comparison. Fon tells him his style will be what he picks and hibari randomly picks tonfas as his weapon. Fon has it in his house because although he uses no weapons he’s fond of their history. Fon gets him a pair of silver ones.
He’s not the brightest, he’s not as terrible as Tsuna and Yamamoto but he’s average academically. He’s not interested in excelling academically and getting a painfully respectable job like doctor lawyer or something in business. And I think his air of nonchalant attitude can only come from a trust fund kid who’s parents don’t expect them to be their carbon copy.
He literally gets himself held back just to stick around a middle school he likes and nobody objects or is worried about his future. It’s definitely secured.
He really doesn’t care about the disciplinary committee members because he didn’t mean to form it. Students have a love hate relationship with him. He was just some scary strong guy who happened to beat up the right people who were pests and they thought he did it for the good of everyone. But they realized too late that it’s really just who irritates him and that sometimes coincides with their best interest so they let it be because he’s a comforting and unsettling presence to have. Like even Tsuna acknowledges this despite being terrified of him most the time he’s always like “wait Hibari will handle it”
He likes that he has disciples because it’s a crowd he’s apart of and is the center of but doesn’t have to be too close and nobody can kick him out or make him feel unwanted.
His parents actually like that he’s respected (oblivious to the fear) as the leader of this club around town because their family is known for strong leadership and he’s applied it to what he wanted.
He likes hamburger steak because when his parents came back his mom liked to test American recipes once she moved back to Japan. This was the only one he really liked enough to ask for again
He can’t cook. At all. Hopeless. Would burn water.
He would kill you for a well made dessert. They put him in a good mood but he’s a weirdo that doesn’t like rewarding himself so it has to be a gift or offered.
He actually likes band t shirts ripped jeans boots and all of that but hardly wears it out because he finds he likes being in his uniform more.
He’s a good boxer because everyone seems to forget he won a BOXING match for royhei. Hello he couldn’t use tonfas he actually had to punch ppl. Yeah he’s strong but that’s a style of fighting he definitely learned from Fon.
He jogs on a private trail around his families property, sometimes his father joins him.
His parents know him really well. He’s not a difficult kid to them. they’re the only ones he answers to but even then they raised him to be independent so they’re not that authoritative over him.
He has a hard time listening to them because he thinks they leave him to govern himself too much and shouldn’t only get a say sometimes.
They feel bad about leaving him to his grandparents for so long but his mother says she’ll never regret making sure their lives were better for him.
They have a good relationship give or take a few problems stemming from their separation from him.
He can draw really well. I don’t know why. But he just does. He does it often on random papers his only collection being a small box his mother keeps of them. He hates when she saves them.
He’s the baby of his entire family but his father is on the higher end of his family and same with his mother for hers so everyone is always asking to see him but he refuses to leave Namimori for longer than a day or two.
He has a sister. Idk. I just feel he has a sibling that’s either way older or a toddler that spends time on trips with their mother because she doesn’t have school yet.
He watches horror movies with his parents a lot. But they have to be psychological thrillers and he always has to fight his dad with his mom on what everything meant.
He’s spoiled. He’s nonchalant about everything but when it comes down to it he is a trust fund baby who would have been sent to a nice private high school abroad.
He has been arrested but his father being his father makes an arrangement with the police force in Nami where he’s just his own independent junior division. It would explain why the people in his committee look significantly older than him sometimes😭.
Tetsyua has always been the only member who’s name he learned because he doesn’t disappoint him. He is to him what Shoichi was to Byakuran , competent in other areas and capable of surprising him. And he never made Hibari feel like he had to say anything to him for that hibari considers him to be a good friend.
Tetsu and Ryohei are the only people he finds familiar and respectable enough to converse with like a normal fucking teenager 😭.
Royhei is loud but he doesn’t mind him because the boy is ALWAYS alone training. And like him he doesn’t backdown from a fight , also he causes no trouble at school.
He hangs out with him more than you’d think but he never initiates it or stops it.
Hibari lets Royhei use his private trail to jog sometimes. His parents know the sasagawa kids well because of this, they get invited to dinner a lot.
He likes kyoko better because she’s like a quieter Royhei but just as kind and determined. He tries to be nice to her by greeting her from them to time but stops because she popular and it draws attention and annoying rumors.
She says he really hates crowds and understands how nosy people in their grade are and says it’s okay if he doesn’t wave back sometimes. She assumes he’s actually extremely shy and misunderstood. (Sis he’s just a delinquent)
It’s platonic but he actually fond of her and is nice to her and they text from time to time. She’s the only one who knows to give him sweets because they talk about them.
He tries to get revenge on Mukuro for making him associate something he actually liked enough to go view (Sakura) with humiliation and anger that he tries to return the favor. The bastard loves nothing that much so he’s still thinking.
His parents think some girl broke up with him at a Sakura filled place and that’s why he suddenly hates it. He won’t explain they’re wrong because it’s better than the real story.
He’s a history buff , but a world history buff not just Japan.
He has an admirable garden that he tends to and sells half the vegetables his chef only cooks for three and doesn’t need that many.
He likes the snow he thinks it’s calming when everyone stays home in their house while outside is cold and harsh but pretty. He makes his parents special hot chocolate on days like that. They let him drink hot wine sometimes but only a sip or two.
He’s bilingual because his parents taught him Italian when he was younger after they had come back. They also taught him a little English.
He watches a lot of American media and listens to their music as well.
On his birthday he never goes out because it’s a holiday and more people are out than usual so his family has a dinner for him and get him gifts.
His mother gives more thoughtful gifts that he appreciates later while his father indulges him and gets him stuff like a popular manga series or a meeting to upgrade his tonfas again or clothing he really likes.

My part for the @lawlu-events BigBang 2018/19
The story got illustrated by the awesome artist @novicecomics
“Zorro! Nami! Usopp!” Luffy called his friends, while waving with his free arm. “Got him!” He flopped down on the free chair, pointing to the other one next to him. “Sit down Torao!” He cheered, grinning broadly. “It took you longer, then I expected” Zorro said with a smirk, scrutinizing the other one. Luffy had a talent to get what he wanted, whatever he wanted.
“Yes, I was starting to wonder, if I should have betted against Nami!” Usopp said with a little nervous laughter. He still felt weird around the doctor. He had a weird aura to himself. Something Usopp could not put his finger on. He was calmer than the first time they met, though. If Luffy trusted the doctor, he would do so too (even though a little bit of caution would harm nobody).
“Sadly, you did not~," Nami said with a playful sigh, before smiling at Law. It was a warm smile. She could very much understand how the other must feel. It was always weird being the new one to a group of people, who already knew each other and were close friends. “Do I want to know what bet this was?” Law said in a gruff tone of voice. He already guessed it was about him, and he was sure, that he would not like to know… whatever it was about.
“Nami wanted to bet, if I get you before the trip ends! But no one wanted to bet against her!” The voice of Luffy was cheerful. “Nami never loses a bet! If you want to keep your money, do not bet against her! Or play with her!” “Oi!” Nami raised her fist. “Do not warn the new one!” Now the chances of milking the new one for easy money were gone. Damn Luffy being nice and social.
“You took out enough people on this ship already! No need to also take out one of us!” Zorro said, before looking at Law, who seemed rather confused.
“You! Silent! I did not forget how much money you still owe me! You understand me?! One day I will come to your apartment and snatch all your liquor and sell it!” “No way!”
“Are your friends always... you know... like this?” Law said. One moment the others seemed like typical adults and the next second they acted as if they were bickering teenagers. They all seemed to know each other very well.
Envy.
Friendship.
He despised it. He missed it.
“Yes! They are funny!” Luffy hummed and looked over to the dining area. “The evening buffet opens soon! I am starving! I want chicken, pork, the lobster…” Law frowned. How could the boy be starving? He had witnessed what the other one devoured for lunch! He shook his head. “Get used to it.” Zorro leaned back in his chair, observing Luffy and Usopp for a moment, before closing his eyes. “Wake me up, when the buffet opens. I wanna get at least some meat before Luffy eats it all!”
Somehow Law got the impression that this was not only a figure of speech but something must have happened in the past. “Oi!” Luffy grinned. “It is not my fault! They should not name it All-You-Can-Eat if they only have a limited amount of food!”
Usopp grinned. Oh god. He remembered the face of the poor cooks and waiters. He pitied them. The way the waiters face had twisted in surprise, disbelief and horror.
“I am pretty certain they did lose a week worth of profit with you. You ate for ten people at least.” “Nami did not have time that evening! I had to eat for her too!” “As if I eat that much!“ Nami scolded him. “Just because you represent the epitome of a glutton!”
Their bickering went forth and back. Somehow, Law felt himself relax more and more. It almost felt, as if the others were not bothered by his presence. “Oi! Torao! Come on, get something to eat with me! Zorro! Wake up!” Luffy did not wait for an answer. He practically ran towards the buffet. It was half amusing, half disgusting to watch. The word gluttonous Nami mentioned before was rather fitting in Laws opinion. As cheerful and happy as Luffy seemed most of the time, considering food he seemed more like a greedy pig. And he ate like one. He chewed with his mouth open, talked while having his mouth half full. It was not exactly a delightful thing to watch and still… Law was amused. Zorro had started to keep up with Luffy’s eating tempo but gave up promptly after. Usopp had overloaded his plate with food. Law had begun to wonder, why the other one had so much food on his plate, when he ate like an almost normal person. He observed Luffy snatching half of the food, so it made sense… Was it a tribute for their friendship? Apparently. Nami was the only one eating and behaving like a proper ordinary, decent and sane person (at least concerning eating behaviors). The only weird thing about her was the force she used to ram the fork into one of Luffy’s fingers, whenever he tried to steal something from her table.
“Get your greasy fingers off my plate! You do not even like fruit salad that much! Oh Law, I hope you are not bothered by these guys behaviors. They got no manners!”
After talking for a while, she had found out, that his name was Law. She had wondered where the Torao was coming from… since on his name tag was written Dr. Trafalgar D. W. L.
“My family had been rather unique too, so do not worry.” Not so greedy, not so animalistic and seeming like starved people fighting over some fiber… but weird in other… places. Luffy sitting next to him, eating like a maniac (and mauling his food in a way, that Law found some pieces of it, on his own plate), was still better than Trebol with the always running gooey nose. Disgusting…
“Oh your family? You mean the man from the picture?”
With a quick swipe of his tongue, Luffy fetched the piece of chicken sticking to his lower lip. Even though he seemed focused on eating, he had watched and observed Law the entire time.
“Yes. Father, well-“ Law tilted his head a little bit. “Adoptive father.” Law loved Corazon, had cherished him … but it still felt inappropriate to say, that Corazon had been his only father. The few memories he had about his blood family. Law was fond of these fragments of happiness and joy.
“Adoptive or not. Family is family.” Nami smiled softly, blue painted nails clicking against the cocktail glass Sanji had brought her. “True!” Luffy grinned. “Who cares who is born by whom, or whose blood is in your veins! Family is what you feel!”
He nodded before shoving another enormous piece of meat into his mouth. If Laws thoughts were not occupied by the family talk, he would probably wonder if Luffy had a gag reflex at all. He was certain, he had seen pieces of non-chewed meat sliding down his throat. “I guess that is one way to put it.”
Law remained quiet for the rest of the dinner. The way Strawhat looked at him, knowingly. There was something powerful in this look. Determination.
“Come Torao! I show you my favorite place!”
Law looked up with a frown. How could the other one be this active and eager again? How did he have this much energy?! Did he not want to relax after such a substantial meal and relax a bit? Law was pretty sure he could a little bulge in his stomach from all the food. But no, apparently the other one did not need to rest.
“Sure.”
One evening. Their deal had been one evening spent together. Just a few more hours and he could crawl back into his cabin again. He just had to survive this evening. Was it what he desired? Isolation. Loneliness. Luffy led the way through dining area. Once again, he was babbling and babbling.
“We are always the last people in the dining area! The others finish their food so quickly! They eat so little.”
“You are the best doctor here! You took care of my friends.”
“Sanji is our friend too now! He cooks awesome food! Nami likes his Cocktails!”
“The old hag is a cool doctor too! Are you two friends?”
“You are our friend now too!”
“Tomorrow you must try the eel! The way Sanji prepares-,“ “What did you say?” Law had ignored most of the things the Strawhat said. Did he mishear him?
“You must try the eel!”
“No, before that.”
“That you belong to us now!” Confusion was written all over Luffy’s face. Law was acting in a bizarre way. It was clear, that he did not want to be alone, so why did he isolate himself? If he wanted friends, why wouldn't he make any? It was not so difficult! “Don’t worry! The others like you, cause I like you. If Zorro is hurt again in training, I can bring him to you, right?”
Law took a deep breath.
“You know I only accepted the invitation because you kept coming every day to my office. This, whatever you believe this is, it is not a friendship.” “It is!” “… How do you think it will work out, after the trip? Only a few days left. You will go to your place again, and I will go to mine. Are you even living in the same city as I am?”
Probably not. Hopefully not. Hopefully yes. No-, he should not get his hopes up.
“Why should distance end a friendship? I am still friends with Vivi! She was in our class for a year! She is now back to Alabasta! And yup! Same city!” “And why do you think, that you know where I live and work?” “Heard the nurses talking! You work in the hospital in the city I live!”
There was it again. The big, knowing grin. It made Laws toes curl in, and his breath accelerate. Big, knowing grin. Threatening. Dangerous. No. The last two things were not fitting. There was no sheer endless row of teeth, no gum revealed. Eyes hidden. Instead, there were warmth and joy. Law sighed. It felt like he was talking to a wall.
“Awesome.” It did not sound honest, but Luffy did not seem to care.

Luffy, Law, Nami and Robin reactions when their weak S/O, who has never fought a single battle in his/her life, picks up a weapon to defend their partner after seeing them injured?
Since our character limit is 3, I dropped Robin. Hope that’s alright, love!
Luffy Protected:
Luffy would pretty much be sprawled across the floor, unable to defend himself. He’d sense his s/o and their determination to protect him. Despite the attack coming at him, Luffy tries to look around, hoping to spot his s/o in the crowd of warriors before they get too close.
In fact, Luffy’s forgotten about the oncoming attack at this point. He’s worried more about his s/o trying to jump into a fight that’s clearly over their head and getting hurt, or worse. With Luffy’s luck, this at least confuses the attacker.
Once his s/o steps up, weapon in hand, to fight, Luffy tries to force himself to get up, but falls back onto his face. He’s downright freaked and starts to order his s/o to run away. He even throws rank, reminding his s/o that he’s the captain and they have to listen to his orders. No luck.
Luffy’s last plan is to simply beg. He’s begging his s/o to flee and leave him behind. When that doesn’t get through to them, Luffy just starts screaming for the other crewmates, namely Zoro and Sanji. He can’t protect his s/o, but maybe one of his friends can get there in time.
No matter what the outcome is, once everyone is back on the Sunny, Luffy is gong to be seriously upset with his s/o. He’s crying from his spot in the infirmary and making a much bigger fuss than Chopper would like. Luffy yells at them, trying to get them to understand how distraught he’d be if anything happened because he couldn’t keep them safe.
Law Protected:
Everything happens so fast that Law’s mind is spinning. One second he’s wincing from a bad wound and next his s/o is in front of him with a sword. His thoughts quickly flashback to Cora and the sacrifice he made for Law, which causes his heart to leap into his throat.
No matter how badly he’s injured, Law forces himself to muster the strength to use his powers and swap his s/o with Jean Bart or Bepo, preferably before his s/o even has the chance to try and fight the enemy. It’s not happening. Not as long as Law is breathing.
He swaps his partner again, placing them in front of Shachi and Penguin. Law’s orders are clear. Shachi and Penguin are to protect his s/o and bring them back to the submarine at all costs. At this point, Law’s completely tuned out his s/o’s protests. He’s seeing red.
Law uses this new rage to fight. In fact, it’s not even rage that’s driving him, at least not solely rage. He’s scared, through and through. Things got too close to home for him and now Law’s backed into a corner. He’s vicious with his enemies, rushing to get back to his s/o and ensure that they’re actually alright.
Are they safe? Unharmed? Good! Now Law can yell and scream all he wants! Unlike Luffy, this isn’t the “I’m so relieved you’re fine” shouting. Law’s livid with his s/o, pointing out all the reasons they should have stayed on the sub in the first place. They could have been killed! Once he’s blown off that steam, he pulls his s/o to their room, where he just holds them. He may still be mad, but he’s shaken up and needs them close to him.
Nami Protected:
She hadn’t meant to get caught up in the middle of the battle. Nami’s trying to duck and weave her way to the edge of the fight when she’s sent crashing to the ground. She hardly has a chance to process that she’s hurt before her s/o jumps between her and the enemy, sword in hand.
Nami watches in silent horror for a moment. The pain from her injury is starting to hit her and now she’s witnessing her s/o wave a weapon around blindly, without any real knowledge of what they’re doing. It’s only when the sword is batted out of their hands that Nami comes back to her senses.
There’s nothing Nami can really do in this instance except scream, and scream she does! She knows how to use those lungs to their best ability and, honestly, even the enemy might freeze up for a second from how shrill it is. Nami can’t find words to call out for help, so her plan is to simply bring attention to herself.
A Nami scream has a special effect that the enemy isn’t going to expect. From seemingly nowhere, a kick sends the foe spiraling across the battlefield. Sanji places himself in front of Nami’s s/o and takes control of the situation. He tells her s/o to take Nami back to the Sunny, phrasing it in a way that won’t put down their inability to fight.
Before the rest of the crew returns to the ship, Nami’s going to cling to her s/o and let all the stress out. She’s too relieved to yell, but she’ll scold them for scaring her. Once she’s calmed down some, there’s a new ‘stupid fee’ implemented. All jokes aside, Nami later approaches Zoro and Brook, asking them to teach her s/o how to properly use a sword.

Nami woke to a sharp, throbbing pain somewhere on her head. Scrunching her face up she attempted to open her eyes and found she hadn't left the theater and was instead now on the stage nearby the grand piano. Shifting, the siren made an attempt to stand and found herself unable, realizing she was not only bound but her human form had gone.
Looking down at her lower half she was met with the familiar mermaid tail and scales she had known all her life.
"Beautiful," a voice came from somewhere in the darkness. "Remarkable."
The words left a shiver to trail along Nami's skin as she attempted to loosen the thick, rough bindings keeping her arms pinned painfully behind her.
How was she still alive?
"What do you want?" Nami called out, her voice a dry croak.
A silent step came from within the audience and Nami squeezed her eyes, trying to focus past her swimming head.
"Shh," the voice hushed, seeming to almost come from everywhere. The sound wrapped softly around Nami in an unexpectedly soothing way which only made the siren even more panicked.
"Just tell me what you want!" Nami cried out. How long had she been here? Black spots began to dot her vision. No, not now, she thought, her eyes beginning to dart around for an escape.
"You will be my masterpiece," the statement held a finality that shook Nami to her core. What sort of masterpiece? What was he talking about? She never saw the demon leave anyone alive. How was she still breathing? It must not be for long anyways. With a shaky breath darkness took over her thoughts once again.
A firm shake brought Nami to consciousness again.
"No, no, not yet," the voice spoke, a trace of annoyance lining the words.
Nami's blue eyes rolled around until focusing on the frame holding her, crouched above her.
"What-" Nami began and the figure above her brought a long, thin finger to rest over their own frozen, pale lips. It was a mask. The Golden Demon.
Everything in Nami went rigid and magic surged within her.
"Tsk, tsk," the voice admonished quietly, wagging the same finger at their lips and Nami felt her magic quickly repressed. "Behave or I will let you sleep and die."
The words were spoken so quickly and with such a familiar indifference that Nami could only blink. It was almost as though she were speaking to one of her own people. She had grown so accustomed to human emotion out of forced habit that now... Now she found herself wanting to talk more just to feel a bit of familiarity, a bit more of home.
For a brief moment Nami forgot why she was even here. How silly all this was- then the light shone on the gun at the hip of the Demon and the twisted bodies of his victims on display came to mind.
This was true evil. And its seduction promised ease and relief, but in actuality there would be none.
"Demon," Nami spat and the figure sat back on its heels, cocking their head to the side.
A joyous laugh suddenly rang out.
"I am no demon," the stranger spoke quite matter-of-factly, yet the laugh was still apparent as a single, amber eye looked at her from within the mask. "Perhaps you are. After all, you do change shape as they do," the voice continued, a light hand trailing along the midsection of Nami's tail for only the barest of seconds.
As if remembering something the stranger's eye closed and reopened. "Excuse me," he said and sounded apologetic. "Your scales are," he continued and Nami waited for the insult, the cloaked disgust, the apparent ignorant fear and misunderstanding nearly everyone had for Marai folk, "... magnificent."
Nami swallowed, blinking in surprise.
"You seem surprised," the stranger remarked, his humor again apparent.
Swallowing, Nami tried to shake the sense of ease that rolled off the Golden Demon in waves. It was disorienting. This creature destroyed everything Nami had ever seen, and it was her Star Guardian duty to destroy him. Lux had shown her all the pictures, the destruction, the vast lists of names of his victims. And there had been those that Nami had witnessed die at his hands as well.
"You don't speak much, do you?" The stranger stood and began to walk along the stage, his hand idly touching the gun at his hip. Tap, tap, tap, tap. Their finger rhythmically drummed along the barrel in unconscious sets of four. Nami's features began to grow angry. Was this some game to him? Did he taunt his victims before killing them?
"I will destroy you," Nami said, her voice was low but it was filled with a vengeance that caused the stranger to pause. "I will never stop," she said with finality that made him spin around.
"Oh, my dear!" The stranger exclaimed, a laugh booming through the theater that sounded nearly as identically mad as Jinx's. "I know! You've been tracking me for some time." As if a switch had been flicked, the Demon's voice became icy, to a point of sharpness that Nami winced as he stepped lightly toward her. He made next to no noise in his movements and Nami realized very quickly that he was beyond a mere demon. She was staring into darkness itself as he leveled himself to her face. "This game," he said, pushing a lock of her bangs away, "must come to an end."
With a smooth motion, his hand reached up and Nami watched in horror as he removed the white mask. Unable to look away, Nami took in his eyes that were a mismatched view of sapphire and amber. Then with a blink they both became a raging crimson.
"You see," said the stranger, his voice on the edge of madness. "They want you to join us-," before he could continue a boom came from somewhere else in the building.
Nami's head jerked, along with the Demon's who was already fixing his mask again to his face.
"Another time, Sakura," the Demon said, tossing a flower beside Nami. Blooming out, a gorgeous, pale white lotus flower budded immediately and sprang forth.
"Wait!" Nami yelled and a spray of thick gas released and Nami felt her vision swim. "No-," she sputtered and felt her head grow heavy. "Wait..."

Word count: ~4000 AO3 Summary: He was the youngest, most naive Straw Hat, but Chopper was also a doctor, and doctors keep their patient's secrets.
"Any dizziness, lightheadedness, or blurred vision?" Chopper asked as he listened to Nami's heart.
"No, no, and no."
The newest Straw Hat was learning quickly that hearty constitutions were the norm for this strange little crew. For someone who had been deathly ill less than a week prior, Nami seemed to be in remarkably good spirits. But the fact remained that she had nearly been killed by a prehistoric disease, and that regular checkups were a must until Chopper was certain she would not relapse.
Lub dub, lub dub, lub dub. The steady, even rhythm was soothing. It really did seem like she was fully recovered. It was the closest thing to a miracle Chopper had seen in his short medical career.
"Hey, there's something I wanted to ask you earlier, but I forgot," Chopper said.
"Sure," Nami said with a soft smile that made him want to squirm in delight.
"Who's Arlong?"
Lub dub, lubdub, lubdublubdub…The room went deathly silent as Nami's heart began to race, and Chopper realized he had asked something very bad without even meaning to.
"Where did you hear that name?"
The sharp, almost panicked tone in her voice made him cringe. Hiding his face with his hat, Chopper tried not to see that his indomitable navigator (his new friend) was scared.
"Y-you did. When you were sick." Nami paled, and the scared look was replaced with one of horror. "Y-you were delirious. You said something about maps, and that…and that you'd have them finished on time."
Nami's arms went limp by her side, and she stared blankly ahead without seeing.
"You asked him not to hurt you."
The statement snapped her back into reality. Nami grabbed the front of Chopper's lab coat, her gaze burning with anger. "Don't you dare tell anyone. I'll deny it till I'm blue in the face. I'll call you a liar and make you wish you were never born."
"I-I wasn't going to!" Chopper stammered.
"You said it yourself, I was delirious. No one would believe you anyway."
"Nami, I'm your doctor! I would never tell anyone what happened when you were sick!"
"I—you wouldn't?" Nami seemed to remember herself, letting go of his clothes as if they were on fire.
"No, I wouldn't!" Chopper exclaimed as he took a step backward.
"Oh." Nami looked away, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. Then her hand moved to her shoulder, tracing her tattoo with one finger. "I'm sorry. It's just that Arlong…Arlong wasn't a very nice man."
Chopper nodded his understanding. "Neither was Wapol, but he's gone now. Arlong's not here either, so you're safe." His spirits lifted when he saw a small smile on the navigator's face. "But if you want to talk about it, I'm here."
Nami reached out and touched his cheek tenderly. "Thank you, Doctor. I appreciate it."
With a metal nose, blue hair, and forearms bigger than a normal man's thigh, Franky could never be described as normal. Add in cola-fueled energy systems, air cannons that shot out of his hands, and the ability to turn into a reverse centaur, Franky was downright freakish.
Chopper didn't mind. There were monsters aplenty aboard the Thousand Sunny. Franky and his cyborg body fit right in with the rest.
Besides, the shipwright was proud of his handiwork. Hardly a day went by where he didn't demonstrate some insane feature he had installed into himself all those years ago. He and Usopp would often joke with one another about what upgrades he would attempt next, each more ridiculous than the last.
Seriously, who else besides Franky would think that nipple lights were a good idea?
There was, however, one sore spot, one not-so-insignificant part of himself that Franky deemed less than super.
"Promise not to laugh?" he asked nervously the first time Chopper examined him.
"I never laugh at my patients," Chopper answered solemnly.
"I can't…I can't have kids."
Chopper blinked, unsure of what he was supposed to say. Franky rubbed the back of his neck uncomfortably. "When the sea train hit me, it did a lot of damage, er, down there." His cheeks flushed bright red with embarrassment. "I made sure it looks normal, and there's still feeling, but I can't…"
"Have kids," Chopper answered for him.
"Yeah."
"Is that something you want?"
"No! Not now, but in the future, yeah…maybe, I dunno. It's not…manly."
Chopper nodded his understanding, although he was still amazed he was having this conversation with Franky, who seemed more interested in mechanics and robotics than romance and children.
He put a hoof on Franky's knee and gave him an encouraging smile. "If something, or someone, makes you change your mind in the future, talk to me. There are some treatment options we can try."
"Really? That's…that's super. Thanks, bro. And…if you don't mind keeping this to yourself…"
"Of course."
"What happened?!" Chopper shrieked, resisting the urge to punch Zoro right in his big, fat chin. The bleeding had stopped, but the wounds would reopen with the slightest provocation. He had seen Zoro beaten and bloody before, but the mysterious altercation at Thriller Bark had left him shredded. In places it had been difficult to find enough healthy tissue to stitch back together.
"Nothing," the swordsman replied with the same unnatural calmness he had exhibited since regaining consciousness. Normally when injured he was rushing to resume his training, wanting to excise the weakness that had led to him being hurt. This time was different. Zoro had accepted the outcome of this particular altercation with surprising grace.
It was infuriating, and Chopper was at his wits end. It was moments like this that led him to believe that Doctorine was right to throw scalpels at her patients.
"I. Am. Your doctor!" Chopper exclaimed. "I need to know what happened!"
"No you don't."
Without thinking, Chopper transformed into his full human form, looming over the swordsman as he poked a finger at the one unbandaged part of his torso. "And if you bleed to death because I didn't know the proper means of treatment?"
"Then that's as far down the path I could make it," Zoro said with a lopsided shrug.
"No, you selfish asshole!" Chopper yelled. He had never talked to one of his crewmates like this before, and he hated it. He hated it, because it wasn't even necessary. Sometimes Zoro's pride was as bad as Sanji's chivalry, but at least Sanji had the decency to admit his deference to the fairer sex would someday be the death of him.
"If I can't heal you that means…that means I failed. That I'm n-not good enough for my dream…" Chopper's vision blurred, and he couldn't keep the tears from falling. "I d-don't want you t-to die. I c-can't help you if I don't kn-know what's wr-wrong."
With one piteous sniff, Chopper reverted to his normal hybrid form and sat in the middle of the floor of his infirmary. He cried, not because he was frustrated (that happened all the time with Zoro as a patient) but because he was exhausted. The Straw Hat Pirates had been in so many life and death situations in such a short amount of time, Chopper wasn't sure how much more he could take.
He heard Zoro sigh, and the swordsman joined him on the ground. Leaning back with a small wince, Zoro looked at the ceiling in thought.
"I'm through the worst of it now," he said. "I'm not gonna die."
"B-but it doesn't make sense. Your injuries, I've never seen a-anything like it before. I'm s-scared, b-because….because I don't know what could do that to you, or if it'll happen again." Chopper wiped his eyes with his hooves. "It's as if…as if something was pushing from the inside out. All your muscles and major blood vessels had damage in their innermost layers. Like…like…"
"Like they'd been stretched," Zoro supplied.
"Yes, like if Luffy stretched his whole body too far all at once." Chopper shook his head when he thought of their captain. For once, Luffy had managed to come out of an adventure unharmed. If anything, it was the opposite.
"Exactly like Luffy," Zoro repeated, before falling silent and letting him put the pieces together.
"…You didn't," Chopper whispered when it dawned on him. "How…?"
"That doesn't matter," Zoro said, this time his tone indicating the subject was closed for good. "I'm not going to die. You did your job, Chopper, just like I had to do mine."
"O-okay."
"Luffy can never know," Zoro said. "I only told you so you'd stop worrying."
It seemed impossible, but in that moment Chopper's respect for Zoro grew even more. And to be trusted with a secret this huge meant that Zoro respected him back. Chopper nodded, brushing away the last of his tears.
"Okay."
"Hey, Chopper, is it normal when people talk to themselves?"
Chopper roused himself, blinking sleepily at Usopp. It was a quiet, warm afternoon, and the crew was all worn out from a recent skirmish with the marines. "That depends, I guess."
"Oh." Usopp leaned back on his haunches.
"Why do you ask?"
"No reason," Usopp said quickly. "It's just…I know this guy…"
"Sogeking?" Chopper asked excitedly. Since Enies Lobby, Usopp had kept in touch with his superhero friend, and was more than happy to regale to anyone who would listen with stories of his heroic exploits.
Usopp thought about it for a moment. "Actually, it is. It's not him, per say, but his, er, sidekick. Yeah. Sogeking's sidekick, Sniper Lad, has been, well, talking to himself. He—that is Sogeking—is concerned. Because that's not normal, right?"
"What's he saying?" Chopper asked.
"Nothing bad. Pep talks, mostly."
"Hmm. It's hard to say. I don't want to make a premature judgment when I've never seen the patient."
"I understand."
"But…" Chopper tapped his chin. "Mental health is a spectrum. Health in general is a spectrum. A lot of people like to have black and white definitions of 'sane' and 'insane', but it doesn't work like that, just like there isn't a clear-cut way to say someone is 'healthy' or 'unhealthy'.
"As the sidekick to a successful hero, Sniper Lad has a very stressful and demanding job. If he's not contemplating doing harm to himself or others and uses it simply as a means to cope...Did Sogeking say if these 'pep talks' helped or not?"
"They've gotten the job done," Usopp said.
"Okay. Without knowing more information, I'd say there's nothing to worry about. People deal with stress in different ways, and if that's what works for Sniper Lad…" Chopper looked back up towards the sky. "Who is anyone else to judge?"
"That's good. I, er, Sogeking was getting really worried there for a second."
Chopper closed his eyes, ready to resume his nap. "I'd like to meet Sniper Lad someday. It's a shame Sogeking had to leave so quickly after Enies Lobby. He would have been a real help against Oars. But I guess he's busy with hero stuff."
"Yeah," Usopp said quietly. "I guess he is."
It wasn't often post-battle checkups made Chopper feel sad. Angry, incredulous, or frustrated, yes, maybe even awed if a wound was spectacular enough. But never sad.
His assessment of Robin after her rescue made Chopper sad.
A single, massive contusion covered her abdomen, the bruises a harsh bluish-purple. An abrasion started at the crest of her hip, disappearing beneath her pants. Worst was the bruising on her shoulders. Chopper could still see the individual finger prints from where she had been grabbed.
"Elephant sword, mostly," Robin said, answering the question he was too scared to ask.
Chopper made a distressed noise and tenderly touched a mark by her kidney. It was uncomfortably similar to the shape of a boot, and he was grateful he had already run the tests that ruled out internal bleeding. "Robin, how long have you had suicidal thoughts?"
"Excuse me?" Robin asked, shying away from his touch for the first time.
"You said you wanted to die," Chopper said, eyes misting at the terrible memory. "H-how long have you thought that?" And how long have I missed clinical depression in one of my patients?
Instead of avoiding the question as he half-feared she might, Robin tilted her head in thought. "I don't know exactly how long it's been, Doctor. Archeologists think about death a great deal simply by the nature of their work, and when I started doing more…unsavory deeds to ensure survival, my awareness of my mortality only increased. But actually wanting to die?" A tiny frown appeared on her face, and her eyes grew distant. "Fifteen years, maybe? It's not constant, but during low moments I've at least entertained the notion."
Chopper's stomach twisted into knots. Fifteen years was as long as he'd been alive, humanly-speaking. "Have you ever tried to…to…"
"Not directly, no. I owe too much to too many people to take my life with my own hand, no matter how badly I may have wanted to in the past." Robin looked down at Chopper intently. "Doctor, I'm asking for your discretion in this matter. The others can't know, not after all that's happened."
"A doctor never tells his patient's secrets."
They were silent as Chopper continued his assessment. Robin probably had a few cracked ribs, but there was little he could do for those other than pain control. As he examined her skull, he found several tender areas and a scab where a chunk of hair had been ripped from her scalp. One of her teeth had a large chip in it.
Sensing his mounting distress, Robin touched Chopper's shoulder reassuringly. Her eyes were tired, but her smile was warm. "I left because I didn't have those thoughts here. From the time I joined Straw Hats until Aokiji's attack…I was happy. After digging out of the pit and tasting the sunlight, I didn't want to go back to the darkness. I thought the betrayal was inevitable, and I had no choice but to go back. I was wrong, and I will fight with every fiber of my being to stay with this crew for as long as I can."
Her battered body was evidence enough of that. "Good. But, Robin, if anything happens and there's another low moment…I'm here for you."
Robin's smile widened, and she squeezed his shoulder. "I know."
One of the most exciting things about reuniting after two years was discovering what new things the Straw Hats had learned during their separation. Usopp had his new arsenal of plants, Sanji could set things on fire under water, and Brook…
Brook's new abilities were totally awesome.
"I can't believe it!" Chopper exclaimed. "You got your head cut off and lived!"
Brook took a sip of tea, obviously pleased with himself. "Well, yes. I suppose I did, didn't I?"
"That's amazing!"
"I would have thought you would be more impressed with Mr. Franky's new machines," Brook chuckled. "All I did was improve my control over my Devil Fruit."
"That's cool, but do you know what that means for me as a doctor?" Chopper nearly burst with excitement at the thought. "I have a patient who can get his head cut off and not die. That makes my job so much easier."
"Well, technically, I've already died…"
"Think of the possibilities!"
Brook set his tea down. "I have, actually, and I'd rather not do it again," he said quietly.
"Huh? Why not?" Chopper asked.
"My body was already somewhat durable. A skeleton does not truly need to eat or drink, nor does it have fleshly parts that can fall prey to disease or decay. I've lived this second life for over fifty years, and I am no different than the day my soul returned to my body."
The crux of Brook's problem dawned on Chopper, and some of his elation deflated.
"My body is held together with the energy of the Underworld. You will all age and will eventually pass on, and even when I'm reunited with Laboon, he will not live forever. I've lost those closest to me once before, and I don't want to experience that ever again."
"Oh."
"But," Brook said sadly, "I'm not certain I can die. Perhaps if what is left of me was destroyed completely, maybe, but I've learned how to project my soul outside my body. And obviously it's not something I want to go around testing, on the off-chance I'm wrong. Not yet, at least."
Chopper was quiet for a moment. "You know, Doctorine told me stories of dying people remaining in an unconscious state for over a week until family could arrive to say goodbye, and others who hold on long enough to see their children married or to hold the grandchildren for the first time and only to pass a few hours later. She always thought that people had some control over when they died. You've got a lot to live for, but when your time comes I think you'll be able to let go."
"Yohohoho, I had never thought of it that way. Thank you, Chopper. Of course, there's quite a lot I wish to accomplish before that happens." A grin spread across his skull, and Brook patted the top of Chopper's hat. "Let's not talk of such unpleasant matters any longer. It's been too long since I've seen you…though I don't have eyes…and I want to know how you've managed to develop such wonderful new transformations."
Sanji claimed he never got sick, and technically that was true.
He did, however, get short of breath.
Chopper shook his head as he pulled his stethoscope away from Sanji's chest. The symptoms were subtle, but to Chopper's sensitive ears they were as plain as day. "I know you don't want to hear it, but I think all those cigarettes are catching up with you."
"You 'think'?" Sanji said.
"It's polite doctor-speak for 'smoking two packs of cigarettes a day is going to kill you'. But I'm sure you knew that already."
"Hey, no need to be hostile," Sanji said crossly. His fingers twitched, and Chopper knew he was fighting the urge to pull out a cigarette at that moment. Chopper was very flexible when it came to doctoring, but he absolutely refused to let Sanji smoke in his infirmary.
"We've been through this before. I guess I'm just frustrated," Chopper said. "You know the risks."
"I do, and that doesn't change the fact I'm going to light up just as soon as I go through that door."
"Can't you at least cut back a little?" Chopper pleaded. "No girl's going to want to kiss you if your breath smells like tobacco."
Sanji threw his head back and laughed. "Oh, you poor, ignorant bastard. Why do you think I started in the first place? It gives me an aura of mystery that matches perfectly with my handsome charm. Look up debonair in the dictionary, and there's probably a picture of me with a cigarette."
"That same picture would also be listed under lung cancer," Chopper said.
"Well, if I live long enough to get to that point, I give you permission to laugh at my sorry ass."
"No. I'll be too busy trying to keep you alive, despite your terminal case of hopeless idiocy," Chopper said, managing a smile.
Sanji snorted. "That's something, I guess. How bad is it, Chopper?"
"You're in the early stages of lung disease. I'll make up some treatments, but as far as I can tell none of your abilities have been compromised yet."
"That's good," Sanji said, and the relief in his visible eye was nearly palpable. "No reason to give Moss Head another reason to exercise his superiority complex."
"And there's no reason to worry the rest of the crew," Chopper agreed. "All the symptoms are reversible. For now."
"Okay." Sanji stood to leave. "I'm sure there will be plenty of I-told-you-sos later, but I really need a smoke."
"Good doctors don't say I told you so," Chopper said quietly. "They stick with their patients, through thick and thin."
Sanji stared at him in surprise, unlit cigarette dangling from his lips. "Then I'm glad you're my doctor, 'cause you're the best there is."
Burns were tricky. Really, having a large amount of scar tissue regardless of cause was tricky. The new skin wasn't as flexible or strong, and if the wound went deep enough the underlying areas were affected as well. No matter how cool looking, Chopper was glad when his patents didn't scar. It was healthier that way.
It was, of course, impossible to avoid all of the time. The Straw Hats were pirates, with all of the danger that entailed. But Chopper considered it a matter of pride that he was able to treat his friend's wounds without leaving behind long-term complications.
Which, in a way, explained why he felt so guilty when he saw Luffy's chest. The X-shaped scar showed how he had been unable to be there in his captain's time of need, not just during the battle, but during the time of recovery as well. Whoever had done the initial treatment had done a serviceable job, though Chopper believed he could have done better, had he been there to try.
"Does it hurt?" Chopper asked softly, palpating the edges of the wound.
"Every day," Luffy said in his normal, simple way, as if it were no problem at all.
"I could help with that," Chopper said. "It's the least I could do after I wasn't there to help…"
"That wasn't your fault, Chopper. I don't want you to say it was ever again, captain's orders," Luffy said, with a seriousness that was usually absent from his voice. "I was the one who wasn't strong enough. Me, and no one else."
"But…" Chopper faltered when Luffy glared at him. "It's not your fault, either."
Luffy leaned back, a sullen expression on his face. "Maybe not, but I'm still gonna make sure it never happens again. I'm strong enough now, I swear."
"I know."
Slowly, Luffy's normal grin returned. "I'm not good at very many things. I can't be the Pirate King without you."
"That doesn't make me happy at all, asshole," Chopper said, delighted.
"Shishishi," Luffy laughed quietly. Then he looked down at his scar, and the serious expression came back. He blinked a few times, very rapidly as if he were trying not to cry, and when he looked at Chopper again his eyes were shiny with unshed tears.
There was a second reason Chopper did not like scars, one that was more psychological than medical. He did not like his patients to be reminded of their trauma every time they looked in a mirror. When Chopper was able to heal someone without leaving a visible mark, he liked to think he had helped heal them on the emotional level as well. He would never pretend that the pain had never happened, but he did think that it made it easier to move on.
Luffy didn't have that opportunity. Every day he would be faced with the evidence of his brother's death.
"And we've gotten stronger, too," Chopper said. "We'll be right behind you, no matter where you go."
A look of pure relief coursed through Luffy's body. He wiped his eyes and gave Chopper a wobbly smile. Maybe two years wasn't enough to completely heal him from the events that took place during the Marineford War, but that was okay. Luffy was well on his way, and Chopper would see to it that his broken heart was made whole again.
