The kala pani (lit. black water) represents the proscription of the over reaching seas in Hinduism.[1] According to this prohibition, crossing the seas to foreign lands causes the loss of one's social respectability, as well as the putrefaction of one’s cultural character and posterity.[2]
The offense of crossing the sea is also known as "Samudrolanghana" or "Sagarollanghana". The Dharma Sutra of Baudhayana (II.1.2.2) lists sea voyages as first of the offenses that cause the loss of varna.[3] The Dharma Sutra suggests a person can wipe away this offense in three years by eating little at every fourth meal time; bathing at dawn, noon and dusk; standing during the day; and seated during the night.[4]
The reasons behind the proscription include the inability to carry out the daily rituals of traditional Hindu life and the sin of contact with the characterless, uncivilized mleccha creatures of the foreign lands.[5] An associated notion was that crossing the ocean entailed the end of the reincarnation cycle, as the traveler was cut off from the regenerating waters of the Ganges. Such voyages also meant breaking family and social ties. According to another belief in the pre-modern India, the Kala Pani (sea water) was inhabited by the houglis, bad spirits and monsters.[6]
The Tirupati Temple does not allow a priest who has crossed the seas to enter the temple's sanctum sanctorum.[18]
In 2007, the ascension of Sugunendra Tirtha to the Udupi Krishna Temple was opposed by some seers, because he had visited foreign countries, thus committing the offence of saagarolanga (crossing the sea).[19] In 2008, a court verdict formally allowed his ascension.[20] In 2012, both he and his opponent Vishwesha Teertha announced fasts to pressure each other on the issue.[21]
Vishnunarayanan Namboothiri, a noted poet who served as a priest at the Sreevallabha Temple, was not allowed to enter the temple after he returned from an overseas trip to London. The temple authorities, led by the thantri (chief priest), asked him to undergo a thorough cleansing, penance and punaravrodha (reinstallation) before he would be allowed in again.[22] Namboothiri was asked to purify himself by reciting the Gayatri Mantra 1008 times, which he refused to do. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh supported him, calling the taboo an "outdated ritual".[23] The Travancore Devaswom Board also supported him, and fired two of its officials for refusing to support his reinstatement. After the board served the thantri a show-cause notice, Namboothiri was allowed back after purification by sprinkling of holy water (theertham).[24]

I've read somewhere that Kerala Christians are the descendants of namboothiri brahmins and St. Thomas himself came to kerala and converted them. Is it a true statement? I'm not much knowledgeable about this.
Also, wouldn't it be better to keep ready cash, one of my friend's husband took away all her gold and since she was not given any money as dowry, she's forced to beg him for money for any personal reasons. Hope you don't take this as me trying to lecture you, I'm just looking out for a fellow woman.
So what you've read is what's called the "mythistory" of Kerala St. Thomas Christians, i.e., the "mythical history" - based on ancient oral traditions - of their origin. There's actually only a 50% chance the Apostle Thomas ever actually came to Keralam, not to mention there was another guy named Thomas of Cana who came to Kerala around AD 350, and it's likely everyone is getting these two people mixed up.
In amy case, there is significant historical evidence that Nambudiri Brahmins actually only arrived in Keralam long after the Jews, Christians and Muslims did (around 10th century AD, whereas Kerala Christians have been around since 4th century AD, and Jews MUCH earlier) However some ancestral St. Thomas Christians' families do appear to have descended from Nambudiris, because there is archaeological and oral evidence pointing to it. There are eight ancestral Christian families who are traditionally believed to have been converted Nambudiris from all the way back in the 10th or 11th centuries.
Also if I take gold I can insist on giving it back to my parents for safekeeping or insist that I'll be wearing it frequently (because traditionally married women of means in Keralam wear the gold mangalsutra on a gold chain, as well as gold bangles). Cash WILL be spent on family and expenses - that's how it's always worked in Kerala Christian households. It's why Christian men have always PREFERRED the dowry to be paid in cash and not in gold/kind, unlike Hindu Nair men, because that way you can get the wife's family to also shoulder the burden of the HUSBAND'S family's share of the wedding expenses, PLUS the Catholic Church can take their share by tithing the dowry. It's all a trick.

Adi Shankaracharya’s Divine Realization by Observing a Snake Protecting a Frog
Around 1,200 years ago, in the beautiful village of Kaladi on the banks of the Poorna River in Kerala, lived a Namboothiri Brahmin couple, Shivaguru and Aryamba. They had been childless for a long time and undertook severe penance, worshipping Lord Shiva with pure devotion. Pleased with their devotion, the compassionate Lord Shiva blessed them with a son, who was named Shankara. They lovingly raised him.
At the age of five, Shankara underwent the sacred thread ceremony. Soon after, his extraordinary abilities began to manifest.
One day, while seeking alms, Shankara encountered a poor woman who, despite her poverty, did not want to send him away empty-handed. She searched her house and found a single dried gooseberry, which she offered to Shankara. Touched by her generosity, Shankara prayed to Goddess Lakshmi, and golden gooseberries rained down in her house.
On another occasion, seeing his mother Aryamba struggling to bathe in the Poorna River due to her health, Shankara prayed to the Ganga River. Miraculously, the Poorna River changed its course to flow behind their house.
By the age of eight, Shankara had mastered the four Vedas and six Shastras, and his fame spread far and wide. Even the local king came to see him.
With his mother’s permission, Shankara embraced asceticism to fulfill his life’s purpose. He became a disciple of the great sage Govinda Bhagavatpada on the banks of the Narmada River and served him devotedly.
Following his guru’s instructions, Shankara went to Kashi, where he defeated various scholars in debates and established the Advaita philosophy, which teaches that all living beings are manifestations of the divine.
Shankara wrote numerous works, including commentaries on the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Brahma Sutras, Vishnu Sahasranama, and Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. He also composed many devotional hymns and texts like Vivekachudamani and Atmabodha to make these teachings accessible to all.
He established the Panchayatana form of worship, which involves the simultaneous worship of five deities: Shiva, Ambal, Vishnu, and others. He also defined the six orthodox schools of Hindu philosophy.
One day, while walking along the banks of the Tungabhadra River with his disciples, Shankara witnessed a remarkable sight. A snake was shading a frog in labor from the sun with its hood. Astonished, Shankara thought, “In nature, a snake preys on frogs. Yet here, a snake is protecting a frog in distress. What a divine place this must be!”
He decided that this auspicious place was perfect for establishing his first monastery. He drew the Sri Chakra on a rock and meditated on Goddess Saraswati, who appeared before him.
“Mother, you must reside here permanently as Sri Sharada and bless the devotees,” prayed Shankara.
The goddess, pleased with his prayer, agreed.
The monastery established by Shankara on that day, with Sri Sharada as the main deity, came to be known as the Sri Sharada Peetham.
Shankara designated the Yajur Veda as the principal Veda for the Sri Sharada Peetham. He also provided the Sri Chandramouleeswara Spatika Lingam, the Sri Ratnagarbha Ganapati idol, and the Mahameru Yantra from Kailasa for the daily worship at the Peetham.
Shankara entrusted the administration of the Sri Sharada Peetham to his chief disciple, Sri Sureshwaracharya, who was considered an incarnation of Lord Brahma.
At the age of 32, Shankara reached the sacred site of Kedarnath in the Himalayas, worshipped Lord Shiva, and then disappeared into the snow-covered mountains.

Traveling
“A journey is best measured in friends rather than miles.” – Tim Cahill
Returning just hours before the broadcast from a phenomenal choral tour of South Africa, jet-lagged and seasoned teen host, Julia, enthusiastically talks about the new friends she made on her journey and welcomes three other teen reporters to discuss the joys of international travel. Two reporters, Diya and Armine, are making their debut segments. Diya shares the suspense she experienced in the cenotes of Mexico, Mayan ruins, and the awe of visiting the Taj Mahal. Armine encourages eco-traveling with simple tips on how to explore the world while keeping the health of the planet in mind. Hasini, another new reporter, reflects on last summer’s two-month internship at a hospital in Hyderabad in South India where she worked in a laboratory and enjoyed eating street food. She also waxed poetic about the history and magnificence of the Taj Mahal. Despite the challenges and exhaustion of flying, all the teens agree that traveling to a foreign land offers cultural awareness with distinctive perspectives. Making friends and bringing back memories tops the list of bonuses. Do your research, pack your bags, and get ready to fly. Remember wherever you travel, leave only footprints, and take only memories.

The Crucial Role of Childhood Nutrition and Digestive Health
Childhood is a time of rapid growth and development, both physically and mentally. It's a period when proper nutrition plays a pivotal role in shaping a child's health and future well-being. One often overlooked aspect of this equation is digestive health, which is closely intertwined with the nutrition a child receives. In this blog, we will explore the vital connection between childhood nutrition and digestive health, emphasizing the long-lasting impact it can have on a child's life
The Foundation of a Healthy Start
Nutrition is the foundation of a child's health. During childhood, the body undergoes substantial growth and development, and adequate nutrition is essential to support these processes. Proper intake of essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals is crucial for building a strong immune system, maintaining healthy bones and organs, and supporting cognitive development
The Digestive System's Role
The digestive system is responsible for breaking down the food we eat into nutrients that the body can use. It plays a key role in absorbing nutrients, eliminating waste, and maintaining a healthy gut microbiome. A well-functioning digestive system is essential for ensuring that a child's body can make the most of the nutrients they consume.
The Gut-Brain Connection
Emerging research has shown a strong connection between the gut and the brain, often referred to as the "gut-brain axis." The state of the gut can influence a child's mood, behavior, and cognitive development. A healthy gut contributes to better mental and emotional well-being, while an unhealthy gut can lead to various issues, including anxiety and depression.
Common Digestive Health Problems in Childhood:
a. Constipation: Insufficient fiber intake and low fluid consumption can lead to constipation, which can be uncomfortable and distressing for children.
b. Food Allergies and Sensitivities: Digestive issues, such as food allergies or sensitivities, can cause digestive discomfort, skin rashes, and other symptoms.
c. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): IBS can manifest in childhood and cause abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits.
d. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): GERD can lead to heartburn and discomfort, affecting a child's ability to eat and enjoy meals.
Tips for Promoting Childhood Nutrition and Digestive Health:
a. Balanced Diet: Ensure that your child gets a well-rounded diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats.
b. Hydration: Encourage regular water intake to prevent constipation and support overall health.
c. Probiotics: Consider incorporating probiotic-rich foods like yogurt or kefir to promote a healthy gut microbiome.
d. Limit Sugary and Processed Foods: Reduce the consumption of sugary snacks and processed foods, which can disrupt digestion.
e. Seek Professional Guidance: If your child experiences persistent digestive issues or nutritional concerns, consult a pediatrician or registered dietitian for personalized advice.
Childhood nutrition and digestive health are inseparable aspects of a child's overall well-being. By focusing on providing a balanced diet, supporting a healthy gut, and addressing digestive issues promptly, parents and caregivers can ensure that children have the best possible start in life. Investing in their nutrition and digestive health sets the stage for a brighter and healthier future.

Intimacy
I think, If anyone were to ask me what I like most about you, it would be your patience when it comes to building intimacy.
I used to think that intimacy was detached from all the other things we do. That it was reserved for after nightfall, in the dark, under the covers.
But with you, intimacy is constant.
It's in the way you let me lie on your chest as we watch a movie, with your fingers gently tracing patters on my back.
It's in the way you pause the movie to focus on me, compliment me, kiss me, and then return to the movie again.
It's in the way you laugh at the stupid comments I make in response to the dialogues, your nose turned towards my neck, and I feel every exhale of yours on my skin, all the while your chest and belly move rhythmically against my skin.
Then there is the intimacy of you breaking into the silly namboothiri accent at the oddest moments, and breaking character when I say something very unexpected.
The intimacy of being being able to cook together, eat together, feed each other, and make fun of each other for consuming the aloevera drink, or the mango ice cream, or the thai sweet chilli flavoured crisps too quickly.
There is intimacy in how I cut run my hands through your hair, finding just the grey hairs, and snipping away as you read emails. All the while, I lean in sporadically to smell your freshly washed skin, or to place a peck behind your ears.
The things I through were meant to be separated, done at different times, all happen at once with you. The joy of simultaneously laughing and kissing, of hugging and speaking, of growing in intimacy through all of these, I hope it remains for a very long time.
I love you.

THE STORY OF MAMANKAM Part 1/3
These articles quote a lot from K. V. Krishna Ayyar's The Zamorins of Calicut and Wikipedia (which again uses the aforementioned text as the main source). So all credits go to K. V. Krishna Ayyar and the Wikipedia contributors.
Samoothiri - Zamorin, the King of Kozhikode
Valluvakonathiri - The King of Valluvanadu
1. The Legend of the Cheraman Perumal
Legends and traditions constitute the main, if not the sole, source of our information for the origin and early history of Kerala. The legend of the Cheraman Perumal exercised significant political influence in Kerala over the centuries. The legend is now considered as "an expression of the historical consciousness rather than as a source of history".
The Keralolpathi tells us that the Namboothiri brahmins were unable to live peacefully, and sought the help of foreign princes. Though we have historical evidence to prove that they had nothing to do with the arrival of these rulers, these stories have perhaps some reference to the disagreements amongst them.
These legends say that Namboothiris brought a prince from a country east of the Ghats to Thirunavaya, placed him on a seat of honour on the banks of Perar, and proclaimed him the "Perumal of Kerala".
Alexander Hamilton says that it was a custom for the Perumal to rule only for 12 years. The king was obliged to kill himself by cutting his own throat. His was cremated with great pomp and splendour, and the Namboothiris elected a new Perumal for the next term. Some sources say that he was only supposed to abdicate and go away.
We do not know about the origins of Mamankam. Thirunavaya is one of the very few places in India where Brahma is given equal importance with the other two members of the Hindu trimurti. These temples and associated traditions like Mamankam must have been founded long ago, before Brahma worship receded to the background.
When the influence of the Perumals increased, they refused to abdicate after 12 years. The Perumal attended the Mamankam but instead of commiting ritual suicide or abdicating, he seated himself in a tent, strongly guarded by his bodyguards who have pledged to die and kill for him.
The candidates of the kingship and the warriors who swore their lives to them were supposed to force their way through this and kill the sitting Perumal. Theoretically, he who succeeded was to be immediately crowned for the next term. If no one succeeded, the same Perumal was to reign for another term. The last Perumal is said to have ruled for 36 years by surviving three Mamankams at Thirunavaya.
According to Keralolpathi, when the last Cheraman Perumal divided his kingdom before abdicating, he gave Thirunavaya sandbank, Thirumandhamkunu Bhagavati's blessings, and the privilege of conducting the Mamankam festival to Valluvakkonathiti. Other sources say that Perumbadapu Swaroppam (the royal family of Kochi), who were the nephews of the last Perumal, got these rights. Anyway, they stopped attending Mamankam after some time and Valluvakonathiri became the Rakshapurushan (Great Protector) of Mamankam.
In the latter half of the 13th century, Samoothiri conquered Valluvanadu. The war was at last decided by the fall of two princes belonging to the clan of Valluvakonathiri. The Zamorin became the master of Thirunavaya and the Great Protector of the Mamankam. All those who had supported the Samoothiri received liberal rewards. To the Samoothiri, the Mamankam was not only a religious and trade festival but also an occasion for the display of all his pomp and power.
