How YouTubers fall victim to scammers. Learn what to do to prevent it.

Recently, 12 large youtube channels (more than half a million subscribers) were taken down by an anonymous person in a single day. Though the accounts were rectified, the hacker used it for streaming a live video showing cryptocurrencies. It happened in Tamilnadu, India - based YouTube channels on January 2022, where popular channels like Sothanaigal, Light House, Urban Nakkalites, Parithabangal were a few notable mentions.

These malicious activities aren't that new, this happens all over the globe. Let's see why these scammers & hackers target YouTubers, how these activities work, and learn how to protect yourself as a content creator!

How it will start

We call these hacks rightly "scams" for the simple fact that all these starts like typical scam; Fraudulent hackers send phishing emails to naive content creators using a socially engineered email, posing as a well-known business and offering endorsement deals to the victim's channel. Scammers will show up to 1.5k dollars (rough 1lakh Indian Rupee) for a single pre-roll ad (the ad that plays before the actual video).

The "Real" Factor

The scammer's objective is right obvious: to convince a YouTuber that they are the real deal. Unfortunately, there are a variety of methods for accomplishing this absurd objective. One way is for scammers to provide faulty files and then pretend that another file can cure it (which turns out to be the actual malicious software).

Another method is to give what seems to be a product catalog, from which the victim (Youtuber) can select the product they want to promote. The ultimate aim is for the YouTuber to open the malware attachment in phishing emails while logged in to YouTube. (After a few deep digs, the cyber team confirms that this was the method used towards Tamilnadu based YouTubers in India)

You're Trapped

There is minimal possibility that the YouTuber will be able to prevent the scammer from obtaining their account credentials once they open the attachment. So the victim will go about their regular lives of content creation, entirely unaware of the fact that their asset now can be doomed anytime, until, of course, it's too late.

The quickest action to take when you feel scammed is to change your password! These scammers use the same credentials you use to login your account saved in your browser's cache. So the obvious first step is to change the password. Then follow these steps.

What's the motive

After a brief period of obtaining or after they have collected a number of YouTubers' credentials (As happened to the Tamil YouTuber we mentioned above), the channel name and password are updated. However, most of the time, victims are only aware of it when they try to log in & are not able to do so. Most of the time, the scammers will utilise the channel by changing its DP (Display picture) & name, removing older videos, and starts broadcasting a live video with links to "giveaways," allowing them to benefit from false promises Or YouTube channels are also sold on the black market or fraudsters may demand a ransom from the owner of the channel.

Protect Yourself from the scam

Check the sender's email address at least twice. Check their domain name and reconfirm by small google search

Verify the company the sponsor claims to be from; A legit brand won't initiate price in initial mail

Check the business address and contact which was provided in the mail
