NAIDOC Week
It’s NAIDOC Week in Australia, a week acknowledging and celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and culture.
If you’d like to learn a bit about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander queer history, we’ve put together a few links to get you started.
Peopling the Empty Mirror: The Prospects for Lesbian and Gay Aboriginal History by the Gays and Lesbians Aboriginal Alliance (1994) - an essay reviewing literature on Aboriginal sexuality, and discussing future of Aboriginal queer history
ATSI Rainbow Archive curated by Andrew Farrell - an online archive active from 2014 to 2021, cataloguing links from across the internet referencing queer Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander experiences.
What do we know about queer Indigenous history? by James Findley (2018) - an article in which Findley speaks to queer Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people about their understandings and experiences of queer Indigenous history.
Colouring the Rainbow: Blak Queer and Trans Perspectives edited by Dino Hodge (2015) - an anthology of essays and personal stories by twenty-two First Nations people exploring identity, culture and queerness.
We are far from experts so if you have links to more sources feel free to add them.

Gina Williams & Guy Ghouse - Moon River in Noongar language
I had the opportunity to see Gina Williams & Guy Ghouse in conversation recently, chatting about the importance of reinvigorating First Nations languages and connection to country.
They then did a beautiful set of original songs in Noongar language, and a couple of covers. The evening ended with a beautiful rendition of Moon River in Noongar and English. I had chills and a flood of emotions.
With NAIDOC week ending, I want to mark it with this joy.

Happy NAIDOC 2023 🖤💛♥️
This year’s theme is honouring Elders. Don’t forget to follow it.
Also remember that corporations and the government will be trying their allyship like they do during Pride, but don’t praise them for the bare minimum. Instead make sure you support Blak media, business, and initiatives.
Don’t just learn the name of whose land you’re on, go out and connect with community. Learn from local mob.

Hey Aussies!
Remember, it's NAIDOC week!
This year’s theme is Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud, and Proud.
“’Blak, Loud, and Proud’ encapsulates the unapologetic celebration of Indigenous identity, empowering us to stand tall in our heritage and assert our place in the modern world.
“This theme calls for a reclamation of our narratives, an amplification of our voices, and an unwavering commitment to justice and equality.” - Steven Satour, National NAIDOC committee chair
“The resilience of mob, our shared experiences, collective memories and kinship is a source of tremendous pride.
“We honour the flame of the fire, kindling the sparks of pride and unity, igniting a renewed commitment to acknowledging, preserving, and sharing the cultural heritage that enriches our nation.
“This year’s theme is a clarion call to continued unity and solidarity for all Australians to come together and celebrate.”
— Aunty Lynette (Dr) Riley

Limbo (2023). Dir. Ivan Sen is great movie about how cops can't do anything helpful for us Blakfellas in their capacity as cops because of institutionalised racism, and in the face of that, all non-Indigenous people can do is just try and help in their capacity as individual people because there is no system that will help us. Anyways, stream it on ABC iView free and support Blak filmmakers. Happy NAIDOC 🖤💛❤️

Condoman
In 1987, Indigenous sexual health worker Aunty Gracelyn Smallwood and her team felt that safe sex advertising wasn’t effectively targeting people in Australia’s remote Indigenous communities. In response, they created Condoman - “The Deadly Predator of Sexual Health” - who spoke to Indigenous people in language they could relate to, and removed stigma from conversations about sexual health.
Condoman became something of a cult figure in Australia, and in 2009 he was relaunched with a suite of comics, animations, and merch, including branded condoms. He was also joined by his “deadly, slippery sister” Lubelicious, who promoted consent, the use of water based lube, and women’s health, for her sisters and sistergirls (an Indigenous term analogous to trans women).
We covered Condoman in our podcast on the AIDS epidemic in Australia.
Keep an eye on this blog throughout the week as we continue highlighting queer Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture for NAIDOC Week.

My tribe relies on the full moon because in my tribe where we live it is extremely hot.
The full moon is important to us as we hunt at night and see everything.
The full moon stirs up all the animals and that is why it’s important.
