Meanwhile, in Not Being Distracted By How Crap Jack Is Land...

What a nice episode for Charlie! The show has vacillated over his character somewhat, seemingly unsure of the kinds of storylines they wanted to give him at the same time as wanting to make the most of having Dominic Monaghan in the cast, and the results have been mixed. Charlie was a stronger character in the first season when the reasons for him taking up screentime were a bit clearer, though at the same time he received an outsized amount of narrative attention compared to his involvement with the central plot. In season two, once the writers knew they had an audience based on various other qualities and not just the actor with the strongest star power, Charlie’s personal narrative went wonky as fuck, a disservice to him and to everything they had poured so much effort into in the first season. The through-line of his imminent demise in this season has thus been the first time Charlie’s character strengths have been played to solidly without getting messy and weird; he’s not a leading-man type character, not on this sort of show, and he’s at his best when he’s bonding with the other ‘second tier’ characters while the ‘primary’ characters go off on yet another cross-island trek. This season has also allowed him to just be a person instead of endlessly treating ‘heroin addict’ as his major character trait, and it really allows this reflection upon his life to carry the serious personal weight of the situation as he goes knowingly to his death. This is good stuff, y’all.

I’m sure we could determine the date more precisely given a little extra effort, but Ben is either a Sagittarius or a Capricorn. He’s just doing his fave thing and lying for the fun of it.
