“… Çocuklarına sahip olduğu için asla pişman değildi ama bazen onlara gücendiği oluyordu. Tüm anneler kimi zaman böyle hissederdi değil mi? Tüm zamanlarını alan insanlara az da olsa kırgınlık taşımazlar mıydı?”

“Grief is nothing but the far brink of love. Love is the sun; grief is the shadow it casts. Love is an opera; grief is its echo. You cannot have one without the other. But if you follow that grief, you will find your way back to love.”

December Book Club
(art by @quohotos)
Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins
While babysitting his little sister, Gregor follows her down a hole in their apartment building’s laundry room and winds up going on an adventure in an underground realm filled with giant creatures. First book in series that Collins wrote before The Hunger Games. It is interesting because it deals with similar themes to THG but for a younger audience and is fantasy instead of sci-fi. (1st in a 5 book series.)
Landline by Rainbow Rowell
This one is a Christmas book! A television writer who's going through a rough patch in her marriage decides to not go with her husband and their kids to their relatives for Christmas because she feels like she needs to work. While her family is away, she discovers an old phone that lets her call her husband in the past, during the time when they were first dating.
The Pearl that Broke Its Shell by Nadia Hashimi
Half contemporary fiction and half historical fiction. It is the story of girl in Afghanistan who is a bacha posh, a girl who lives as a boy for a while for her family's benefit and then has to adjust to becoming a woman and losing the freedom she had as a boy. It is also the story of one of her ancestors who had some similar experiences.
Starsight by Brandon Sanderson
The second book in the Skyward series. I haven't read it, so I don't know if it's good. I have it, though, so you can borrow it.

🎊 2-Year Anniversary! 🪅
I started the World Challenge around April 2022, so here's my little 2-year celebratory post with a bunch of stats that no one cares about!!
The stats:
Books read: 70
Countries completed: 66
Total pages read: 23,918
Average rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 3.9 stars
Average publication year: 2015
Average page count per book: 341
Native authors: 74%
Queer books: 24%
YA or MG genre: 68%
As you can see from the number above, it can be hard to find queer books for certain countries. I have also somehow managed to generally pick books that I like, as the ratings show!
Top Genres:
Sources:
Total spent: $41.39
Most of the spent is 2 months of Scribd, and some Kindle sale books. The "Other" is, ahem, when there were no affordable options, and thankfully that was low! Otherwise I managed well with libraries and free trials! (all digital)
Time Periods:
I've also spent the majority of time in the modern world.

🇦🇫 Afghanistan
Region: Middle East/Central Asia
One Half from the East
288 pages, published 2016
Original language: English
Native author? Yes
Age: Middle grade
Blurb:
Obayda’s family is in need of some good fortune, and her aunt has an idea to bring the family luck—dress Obayda, the youngest of four sisters, as a boy, a bacha posh.
Life in this in-between place is confusing, but once Obayda meets another bacha posh, everything changes. Their transformation won’t last forever, though—unless the two best friends can figure out a way to make it stick and make their newfound freedoms endure.
Other reps: #disability, physical #muslim #transgender #genderfluid
Genres: #friendship #family #slice-of-life #contemporary
My thoughts:
So I'm a sucker for gender-bending. No boys in the family? Just change one of your girls to a boy for luck. Such is this Afghan tradition. I am intrigued, so despite being for a younger audience, I picked this book as the main rep for Afghanistan. (The first country in the alphabet, woo!)
Review to come.

March 2024 Book Club
Attack on Titan Colossal Edition #1 by Hajime Isayama
Refresh your memory of the series before watching the final anime episodes by reading the manga. You will also enjoy understanding elements of the story in a different light than you did at first because of things that were revealed later. (Available from me.)
The Pearl that Broke its Shell by Nadia Hashimi
Half contemporary fiction and half historical fiction. It is the story of girl in Afghanistan who is a bacha posh, a girl who lives as a boy for a while for her family’s benefit and then has to adjust to becoming a woman and losing the freedom she had as a boy. It is also the story of one of her ancestors who had some similar experiences. (Available from the library.)
Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson
The first book in the Reckoners trilogy and the first Sanderson book I ever read. One day, people start getting superpowers! Problem is, they all turn into villains. A group of vigilantes without powers works to figure out their weaknesses and bring them down. (Not set in the Cosmere.) (Available from the library.)
The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner
Fantasy novel about a thief who talks a little too much about his accomplishments and gets caught and thrown in jail. He is given a chance to regain his freedom when he is recruited to steal a mythical artifact for the king. It's the first book in a series of 6, but it can be read on its own. (Available from me.)

Challenge progress
Stress levels have been super high lately and I haven't been reviewing here as much, but I'm still reading ('cuz one has to escape sometimes). I'm up to 36 finished now, newly finished are in bold.
My up next list are the rolls from the randomizer that I haven't read yet. It's been determined to keep me in Europe lately (straying a little to Azerbaijan), plus there are two African countries I've been putting off because I have to buy them. :/
