i really really love reading perfume reviews and i would love to start describing songs like a perfume reviewer but maybe this song is not a great one to start out with: the ghost inside by broken bells, off their 2010 self-titled album. it got stuck in my head bc it is sort of the ur-example of 2010s indie rock. you have to listen to it but after you listen to it you know i am Right. kind of a bonkers scifi music video with mostly practical effects and actress christina hendricks (interview here).

The Blood Trials (Book One of the Blood Gift Duology, Jan 2023) by N.E. Davenport. i KNOW i originally put this on my holds list bc of a tumblr post but i cannot find that post again.

explaining the plot of this book to my best friend involved saying the phrase "and then THE BLOOD EMPEROR" a lot. there is no short way to explain the plot of this thing.

Blending fantasy and science fiction, N. E. Davenport’s fast-paced, action-packed debut kicks off a duology of loyalty and rebellion, in which a young Black woman must survive deadly trials in a racist and misogynistic society to become an elite warrior. It’s all about blood. The blood spilled between the Republic of Mareen and the armies of the Blood Emperor long ago. The blood gifts of Mareen’s deadliest enemies. The blood that runs through the elite War Houses of Mareen, the rulers of the Tribunal dedicated to keeping the republic alive. The blood of the former Legatus, Verne Amari, murdered. For his granddaughter, Ikenna, the only thing steady in her life was the man who had saved Mareen. The man who had trained her in secret, not just in martial skills, but in harnessing the blood gift that coursed through her. Who trained her to keep that a secret.

this is a "graduate or die" book that i would normally say is YA but the protagonist Ikenna is ~20ish and there are two quite explicit sex scenes. so i feel it veers more new adult? what if you learned to be an ancient greek spartan praetorian but also had blasters? that's what this school is.

this is a military scifi that is also a murder mystery (HELL of a dense concept to pick for a debut novel) that gets SO yuckydisgusting with loving descriptions of military training wounds and a cannibalism scene (not by our protagonist) i had to skip over. i think this would be terrific for locked tomb girlies but it is at the bleeding edge of my tolerance level. i am a noted big baby about gore, so ymmv.

tumblr user kay, why the fuck did you keep reading it? one of the best technically written debut novels i've ever read. extremely compelling in how the narration is from Ikenna’s point of view and she has almost all the murder mystery pieces but fails to put them together bc of personal flaws and foibles. and she is so good at tripping face first over those flaws and foibles it really effectively distracts you from the pieces of the murder mystery! she’s so so so good at making the worst possible decision (in hindsight) at any given point. all her decisions have complex hidden downsides but at the same time she could not have made any different decision. failsafes her grandfather put in place fail bc of the way she interprets them. she is a very good soldier but less good as a strategist. terrible as a politician. this sort of thing.

she is quick to act and quick to decide, and allies and enemies flip fairly quickly without much hemming and hawing. once she has definite proof of betrayal or alliance, she accepts it and charges on. i think the occasionally flimsy lead up to these flips is one of the book’s weaknesses, but i also think it’s one of Ikenna’s major weaknesses. im not convinced the author handles doling every clue out or how the very complex political situation clicks together Well, but Ikenna’s reaction and dealing with the fallout of these things is very believable and well done.

VERY rapid pace— reminds me of The Hunger Games, where Suzanne Collins’ background in TV helped her know when to break chapters. there aren’t any lulls where I lost interest— i read this book in basically one sitting overnight.

meandering through a playlist of oscar-nominated shorts: the 1951 UPA black comedy musical film noir short "Rooty Toot Toot" has been one of my favorites so far.

it's so hyperstylized and so gleefully minimalist. the background characters, even though they are mostly just blobs and circles, are notably diverse for 1951. let's yoink some more background from the description/TCM:

Hubley brought in a number of interesting collaborators on Rooty Toot Toot. Dancer Olga Lunick was hired to choreograph the ballet-style dance moves. There was no rotoscoping involved; her moves were only referenced by the artists and animators, not slavishly traced. Paul Julian designed the backgrounds and utilized some non-typical techniques; in his essential history of UPA, When Magoo Flew: The Rise and Fall of Animation Studio UPA (Wesleyan, 2012), Adam Abraham quotes Julian on one of them: "'I found a kind of oddly corroded gelatin roller - an ordinary print roller that had been pitted and pocked in some way, chemically.' With this device, he produced distressed-looking backgrounds that suited the sordid tale." In addition, Hubley and the studio brought on jazz musician Phil Moore to write the score. Moore had done orchestrations for many MGM musicals in the 1940s, but uncredited--this would be a rare on-screen credit for the black musician. Legendary animator Grim Natwick also joined the crew. loosely based off of this poll. sorry, this got away from me. i was a theater kid for years (i still am, i literally made a bunch of friends larp as wizards two weeks ago)

Davenport: Producer and Stage Manager. Personally more experienced in opera than musicals, but answers the call when the need for a manager arises. Keeps everyone focused and on schedule. Has final word on what choices the art department gets to make. Sometimes does solo performances on his own time.

Merle: Choreographer and Director. Leads the ensemble into meditation every rehearsal before warming up. Talks with each member of the cast one-on-one. Sometimes leaves the script open to interpretation. His artistic vision sounds bonkers in concept, but illuminating in execution. Why are there so many plants? Don't worry about it.

Magnus: Lead Actor and Set Builder. He brings the energy every single night. He doesn't need to be micc'ed up because his natural voice projects well enough. It takes a bit of time for him to memorize the script, but he devotes his heart and soul to it. He claps loudly for the ensemble when he's in the wings. He cries at the emotional numbers. Built all the sets by hand.

Lucretia: Co-stage Manager and Supporting Actor (not for lack of chops, only because she spreads herself very thin.) Knows the script like a second language. Mainly reserves her Director Voice for backstage when things get chaotic. Enjoys performing the musical numbers because no one knows she can belt, until she does. Standing ovation girlie, but bashful about it.

Lup: Co-lead Lead Actor and Costumer. Only willing to do the role if Davenport lets her include cold sparks and fog machines in the set budget (he finds a way.) No one knows when she took measurements for the costumes, but they're ready by dress rehearsal and they fit perfectly. Helps the other actors figure out their groove. Great at engaging the audience.

Angus (special edition): Child lead and stagehand. The sweetest little singing voice you ever did hear. Everyone is going to rue the day his voice starts cracking. A heartbreaker of a performer and a speedy backstage assistant.

Taako: A MYSTERY. He's wearing a fancy scarf and roaming all over the place. He's talking about the Art of the Theatre. He's listed on the billing of lead actors and NO ONE knows what his role is. He remembers all the little things that everyone forgets: clothes pins, a hot glue gun, and electrolytes. He's got a walkie-talkie. Only the managers and tech are supposed to have walkie-talkies. Hello, this is Taako speaking, over.

Barry: Usually Tech. He's got a beautifully choreographed queue of lighting designs and stage effects. He's got an immaculately labeled pad controller and a ready-to-go Excel spreadsheet. But on opening night, Lucretia informs him he's in the orchestra pit.

Barry: ...But I'm lighting tonight.

Lucretia (via walkie-talkie): And our percussionist twisted his ankle tripping over a stage light. You're in the orchestra now, compadre.

Barry: (with increasing emphasis, decreasing conviction) But. I'm. Light. Tech.

During intermission, Magnus asks him to help lift the ensemble dancers onto the set scaffolding, and hold it steady. Barry agrees, thinking he's in the clear after that. But the second the music number ends, Merle tells him that one of the support roles had to leave, so now he's the understudy.

Fall and Hawthornes: Headcanons, Part 1

Grayson and fall:

-He loves fall. It’s his favorite season.

-He loves going out to take pictures of the trees and weather and decorations and light changing and everything, cause we know he’s a little shutterbug❤️

-The second the light starts changing he gets a little excited! Even Grayson Davenport Hawthorne has to have feelings, yes, I know, shocker.

-One of his go to autumn outfits is a cranberry red or black turtleneck and a fashionable grey trench coat. Not a detective’s style coat, but one of the nicer ones. See exhibit A. A similar pair of pants as in the picture. Sometimes he completes the look with a pair of fashion statement glasses, something his fangirls swoon over.

-He likes the seasonal coffees(cause he’s obviously a coffee addict with how much he works). But would he like pumpkin spice? I don’t know.

-His favorite holiday is Thanksgiving, when all his family is in one place where he can keep them safe and happy with each other! Plus the food. I also feel like there has to be at least one Thanksgiving dish he insists on making himself because nobody else makes it right.

-He will spend many a late evening in his room, maybe balcony doors open, fire in the fireplace, reading. He may be a workaholic all year, but he doesn’t stay as late at work in fall so he can enjoy his favorite season.

-He has O N E pair of soft, cushy, fuzzy socks that he pampers himself with once in a while. Nobody else knows and he plans on keeping it that way.

-He ADORED hayrides as a kid. Secretly wants to go on one again. (Someone pls take the man on a hayride date)

-He prefers apple pie to pumpkin. He needs the warmth.

-He wants fall scented candles but doesn’t get them because he doesn’t want to get teased over it.

canon up until S05E06 of the originals. after hayle(y)'s death, hope does not go back to the salvatore school and instead stays in new orleans with her family. marcel homeschools her as much as possible, considering klaus and rebekah can't come near her and she wants nothing to do with elijah.

even though klaus cannot come near her, he changes how much he stays in contact with her and the two of them grow extremely close very quickly, somewhat resolving hope's issues with his previous absence in her life. she clings to klaus after losing her other parent.

like in canon, klaus and hope still end up going near each other and causing issues. after regaining his memories, elijah's guilt over hayle(y)'s death consumes him, and when klaus tells him of his plan to take in the entirety of the hollow, elijah intervenes and convinces freya to give it to him instead.

klaus is still the one to kill elijah, in the same way as in canon. i have issues with how the white oak was magically there the entire time after the entire last half of season 3 was spent fighting over "the last of the white oak" so the stake was not hidden by klaus decades ago, it was magically made from the remaining fragments of white oak that could be found around the city.

another thing i'm addressing that season 5 did not is elijah's sireline. because he was never disconnected from them, 1/3 of all remaining vampires on earth died.

hope does not find out that elijah did this for klaus until after it's done. she has unresolved emotions about it, and refuses to talk about it when it's brought up.

hope becomes even more attached to klaus, and because the hollow is now gone, she is by his side at almost all times. anything that takes his attention/interest away from her is seen as a threat. she completely falls into the daddy's girl trope, very quickly.

freya teaches her magic, klaus teaches her everything else. like in canon/legacies, hope has issues containing her magic and it is very heavily tied into her emotional state. if she gets too upset, the entire city risks experiencing a blackout if she is not wearing her bracelet.

3 years post series (when she is 21) hope forgets to take her magic-dampening bracelet off when she is trying to track someone she thinks is trying to hurt klaus. it ends up being aurora, and hope realizes she isn't powerful enough to protect herself too late. aurora kills her, and she turns.

these details are slightly different for my klaus's family business verse, as hope is not klaus's only child there:

hayle is not dead, elijah is not dead, klaus is not dead. we do what we want. because of this, hope still attends the salvatore school and goes to college there.

because she is considered one of klaus's firstborn children (via dahlia's firstborn curse resetting each millennia), hope is still far more powerful and uncontrollable than the rest of her siblings, and thus feels alone because of it.

she is also the only one of her siblings that does not have a direct sibling, as she was hayle's only child. this also contributes to her feeling alone.

because she is one of klaus's firstborns under dahlia's curse, she has a doppelganger who was born roughly two years after her; her name is jackie kenner-west. she is jackson's child, and because of this, hope considers jackie her sister.

hope's relationship with klaus is completely different in this verse as opposed to her canon/main verse. she is far more attached to hayle than she is klaus.

I had had a shitty week. Three of my little siblings were sick and the other two refused to listen to me. I hadn’t seen Elmer in two days and hadn’t slept in longer. I was currently flopped down on the couch in his house while my little brothers screamed and ran around. I threw an arm over his eyes, groaning. My little brother, Timmy, jumped into the couch next to him, sitting on my stomach 

“Benji! Benji!” I yelped and moved my arm

“Timothyy Davenport! Get off me!” He said. he laughed and bounced up and down, grinning

“Hungry! Hungry!” He yelled, I shoved him off my stomach and sat up. 

“No. You had dinner half an hour ago” I said. He whined loudly

“But Benji-“ I sighed and picked him 

up. 

“No buts- it’s bedtime” I said sternly, Timmy kept twisting around and I was debating dropping him just to get him to shut up.

“be quiet! You’ll wake Alvin!”

“Alvin’s slept all day”

“Exactly, go to bed” I said, setting him  down in his bed. he groaned loudly but did as I said.  I sighed and walked to Alvin’s crib. I picked up the baby and checked him over quickly. I closed the door after telling Tim  a brief bedtime story. I peeked into my little sisters room and found both of them asleep. 

At least that was one good thing about them being sick. There was a knock at the front door and I went to open it. I still had Alvin in one arm. Elmer stood there, looking slightly embarrassed. I stepped aside to let him in.  He walked in and kissed my cheek. I smiled

“So what’s up?” I asked “What brings you to the house of chaos?” Elmer laughed slightly 

“You looked exhausted today and I figured you might need help?” He said sheepishly. I shrugged

“I got everyone to bed already- but you can stay” I replied, leaning my head on him. Elmer smiled

“I wanna see da baby” he said, I laughed and handed him the sleeping Alvin. Elmer took him and held him. He loooked at me

“Can I out him to bed?” He asked. I shrugged

“Go ahead, just be quiet, my brother isnt fully asleep yet.” Elmer nodded, nuzzling my neck. I blushed and smiled, turning my head away. He laughed and disappeared down the hallway. He came back and looked me up and down 

“When did you eat last Benji?” He asked. I shrugged, looking down

“Tuesday I think- wait, no, I had a few crackers yesterday” I mumbled, avoiding eye contact. Elmer sighed softly and kissed my collarbone. I squeaked in surprise. He laughed softly.

“Go sit on the couch, I’ll make you some food”

“Elmey I’m fine-“

“Go. Sit” Elmer said sternly, crossing his arms. I sighed and did as he said, flopping onto the couch. I could see him rummaging around in the cupboards.

“What do ya want darlin?- wait nevermind im making pancakes” he said. I laughed softly. 

“Whaaat?” He laughed “i barely get any of the good food at home! I have eight older siblings!” I rolled my eyes. He stuck out his tongue.

So as it turns out I was a little hungry. I guess I practically inhaled the pancakes. Elmer kissed my eyebrow, I felt myself redden.

“Feel a lil better now?” He asked. I nodded. The feeling like I was going to throw up had vanished.

“Yeah” I agreed, resting my head on his chest. He hummed and started to mess with my hair. I smiled softly. 

“Ya wanna know what race and Albert did today?” Elmer asked. I nodded. He went on to tel me a story but I wasn’t comprehending anything that he was saying. I rubbed my eyes, trying to force myself awake. Elmer raised an eyebrow 

“Tired?”

“nO” I lied, rubbing my eye again. Elmer rolled his eyes

“Go to bed” he said. I shrugged noncommittally. Elmer raised an eyebrow

“Benjamin” he said. I sighed and flopped onto my back. Elmer laughed and picked me up. I yelped, grabbing onto him tightly. He laughed.

“P u t m e d o w n” I said, Elmer shook his head, kissing my eyebrow. I felt my face warm and huffed. He laughed and carried me to my room. He tossed me onto the bed. I groaned and attempted to sit up. He pushed me back down

“S l e e p” he ordered. I groaned and rolled onto my stomach. Elmer laughed quietly.

“Just sleep Benji, you’re exhausted” 

“aM nOt” I said defensively. Elmer just kissed my cheek and ran a hand through my hair.

“Shhh, you don’t wanna wake up Tim and Alvin” he said, winking before starting to walk away. I whined, he looked at me, questioning.

“Cuddles!” I demanded. He laughed, crawling into bed next to me. I yawned, burrowing into his chest. He was warm and safe. He laughed, rubbing my temple with his thumb. I pulled the blanket around the two of us and Elmer kept on rubbing my temple. It felt nice.

just finished reading The Blood Trials by N. E. Davenport and it was really good! especially when i got to the last few hundred pages or so, when the huge twists came up and i had no idea how the book was going to end! have to say, i did manage to predict a few of the things and it was a bit frustrating that the main character Ikenna was still clueless about certain things, but those last few twists really made up for it. also have to say that the writing was iffy in bits, in that Davenport has a habit of telling, not showing, in parts that don’t need the explanation, so that kind of took me out of the story a little bit. the trials were really good! i would’ve liked to see more of the Accursed creatures, but they were horrifying nonetheless. the Praetorian leaders in charge of the aspirants going through the trials gave off a heavy Divergent vibe, in that there were two officers in charge, one good and considerate (Darius) and the other is bad, takes pleasure in their pain and killing them etc (Chance), so that felt a bit cliche.

but, by far, the worst thing in this book was the ‘romance’ if you can even call it that. let’s say it was a moment of lust between Ikenna and Darius. why was it bad? for one thing, it comes out of nowhere. like he sees her in a towel and she sees the bulge in his pants and suddenly they have the hots for each other. i already assumed they’d get together at some point but there still should’ve been at least one or two clues, a bit of an ease into it. the writing on the sex was bad, like it made me laugh, which i’m sure wasn’t Davenport’s goal, and it spanned pages! and the way it ended made me laugh too bc look at this quote from it:

‘I’m not a virgin. I’ve had sex before.

This wasn’t sex. I’ve never had what just transpired.’

i’m sorry you’re telling me these two kiss, he fingers her for what seems like a minute or two then slips his dick in her pussy and thrusts (to summarise plainly) - and that was the out-of-this-world sex? that’s it? it was so good she couldn’t even call it sex? lmao.

nevertheless, i’m waiting in anticipation for the second book for everything besides Darius and Ikenna’s relationship lol which i’m sure will develop more strongly in the second instalment. but so much happens and there’s so much betrayal, which i love!
