not my fault - jack hughes
summary: a party, an Instagram post, and a whole world of hurt, oh and pulling an abby.
warnings: angst, bro fight, swearing, cheating, a crying mamma hughes
word count: [2,276]
A/N: Isabel thanks for the idea in the gc, but like it hurts if your mad send it @Twinkmattgrzelcyk
It was a Saturday night which meant hockey was finally over for the week, and you finally got to spend the next forty-two hours with Jack. Sure that meant spending the rest of your Saturday in the basement of a house you’d never been to before for a party, but it didn’t matter. You were there with friends and were just hoping for a good time. And well it wasn’t that hard to have one when Trevor announced that he had found alcohol.
So that’s how you ended up with a giggling Jack pulling you closer to him with his arms wrapped tightly around your waist. “Baby you’re hurting me,” you teased trying to wiggle out of his arms a little. Only he didn’t seem to care and continued to laugh at something Alex. “J seriously,” you whined grabbing his arms and moving them, “it hurts.”
The moving of his arms finally caught his attention and smiled down at you. “Sorry babe,” he muttered into your hair before pressing a very wet kiss to your cheek. It was your turn to laugh at his actions only egging him on further. Kisses were placed all over your cheeks and neck
Jack then turned you around and slammed his lips onto yours smirking into the kiss. “Jack as much as I want to keep making out with you, we’re with all of our friends. Can’t it wait until we get back to your house?” The hockey player frowned at you while slowly nodding his head, “You didn’t understand a thing I just said did you?”
“Nope, not at all,” he slurred going back in for a kiss, but before he could reach your lips you pulled away from his hold. “What are you doing? I wanna kiss you,” he whined a pout forming on his face again. “Y/n/n come back here.”
Shaking your head you continued walking towards your other friends. “J, I’ll be right over there okay? I’ll see you in twenty minutes, less go find Cole or someone I have to talk to the girls.” Turning away from him he watched as you disappeared into the group of girls, and lost sight of you. God if only he kept sight of you.
You sat there staring at the phone unsure of what do or say. “Jack, is that - is that you?” Your head tilted to the side while zooming in on the picture to get a better look. “Oh my god it is you. Jack, you kissed another girl?” You were broken voice and all and Jack’s smile fell as he turned and looked at you.
“What’s me? Kissed another girl, Y/n what are you talking about?” He answered completely dumbfounded but knowing exactly what you were talking about. When you looked up at him with tears in your eyes he had to look away. Your e/c were were breaking and Jack started to feel sick, “The party-”
“What about the party?” You asked thinking back to the happy night which was suddenly turning upside down. He stayed silent choosing to stare out of the front windshield instead of meeting your gaze. “J, what about the party?” You pressed tears slowly starting to fall your cheeks.
Placing your phone on the middle consul you were offering Jack the chance to look at what Cole had posted with Abby. It was a cute picture of them smiling while she sat on his lap, but the only bad thing about it was in the background - if you looked close enough - you could see Jack kissing another girl. Grabbing his hand that wasn’t going to pick up the phone you were silently begging for him to look at you. “Jack please tell that isn’t you, please tell me that isn’t you J,” you whispered.
“I can’t,” he mumbled finally looking over at you with tears clouding his bright blue eyes, “because it’s me. God Y/n/n I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean it. I don’t even remember it, I hardly remember last night at all.” His words didn’t help though, only sending more tears down your face. “No please don’t cry, Y/n/n please I remember being with you, and you coming home with me after the part-”
“Do you remember kissing her?” You interrogated through your tears. His mouth opened to say something, but he immediately closed not wanting to say something stupid and hurt your feelings anymore. “You do, don’t you,” you breathed praying your voice didn’t crack too much.
His eyes looked away from yours and down to your connected hand, “Only because as soon as I kissed her I knew it wasn’t you.” You choked back on your tears not knowing what to do or say. “Please Y/n it was a mistake and I was drunk, you have to believe me. I love you.”
“Just because you’re drunk doesn’t mean you get a free pass for kissing another girl,” you huffed crossing your arms over your chest. “You still should have known Jack, and I love you isn’t going to fix this. I can hardly look at you now without thinking about how another girl kissed you,” you admitted.
Jack was silent as he looked around the car anywhere but at you. The only thing that could be heard was your quiet cries over a stupid picture. “Take me home Jack,” you stated finally bold enough to speak, “I can’t be in the same area as you anymore.”
“Y/n/n please, I didn’t mean to. It’s not my fault, please just stay here, with me.” You shook your head begging yourself to not fall for his words like you did with so many little things. “So does that mean we’re done, that you’re breaking up with me?” He asked not sure if he wanted the answer to his question.
So you sat there in silence on the way back to your house praying he wouldn’t ask anymore but of course he did. “Y/n, I have to know, are we breaking up?”
“I don’t know J,” you sighed hand on the door ready to leave, “I dunno Jack, I just have to think about this, it’s just a lot to process.”
He nodded his head and ran his fingers through his hair, “Okay, okay I can handle that. Just please Y/n/n, know that I love you.” Only the answer he got from you was the closing door and walking into your house. It was the first time in his life you had never said ‘I love you too’ before leaving, and that’s how he knew he had fucked up.
Cole walked down the stairs to the Hughes basement knowing that’s where he’d find Jack, after he had texted him earlier. And that’s where he was, sitting on the couch with red eyes as he watched a recording of a Leafs game. “Hey bro,” he called with a cheery smile hoping to see a smile. “Wow, wait are you okay J?”
Jack turned to look up at the Wisconsin commit with a frown, “I think Y/n and I broke up, or we’re on a break? I’m not even sure what’s going on with us.” Cole stood there unsure of what to do or say. He didn’t even understand why you and Jack would’ve been broken up, you guys were perfect with each other, then it hit him. He had forgotten about the background of the picture he posted. The picture that Jack was staring down at.
“I don’t get why you posted that picture,” Jack huffed staring down at the picture that had ruined his relationship. “Cole you can tell I’m kissing another girl in it and you still posted it! I’m dating Y/n-”
“Were, you were dating Y/n, but please continue, please Jack tell me why I shouldn’t have posted that picture,” Cole pointed out not bothering to look up at the expected first overall pick. “Because I had every right to post a picture of me and my girlfriend.”
He just stood there staring down at who he considered his best friend completely shocked he stabbed him in the back. “Because you’re my fucking best friend and you can tell I’m kissing a different girl in the background!” Jack yelled frustration setting in. “I was drunk Cole! You knew that and it was a mistake, but you still posted it! So you shouldn’t have posted it because you knew I was with Y/n.”
Cole rolled his eyes before standing from the couch. Now chest to chest with Jack he could see how angry his best friend really was. “Why’s it my fault that you cheated, I just posted the picture, you did the rest.” Jack shoved the shorter boy annoyed that he had to bring his fault up again. “You were drunk, and hanging off Y/n all night, but she’s gone for what less than a minute? And you have your tongue down another girls throat.”
The curly haired seventeen year old turned around clenching his fists throwing his head back. He knew it was all his fault, you screaming at him in his Jeep last night made that clear. Sure his memory was a little foggy from that night but he remembered kissing her, and he also remembered taking you home with him. He just didn’t understand why Cole - his best friend - had to post that picture. There had to be other pictures of him and Abby from that night so why that one, why the one that would ruin his relationship with you?
And then it hit him, how he could get back at him. “What about you and Abby, huh?” He asked with a smirk. Cole fell silent as he stared at him with wide eyes. “See that’s what I thought,” Jack taunted with a knowing smile. He was making Cole just as uncomfortable as he was.
“You know what fuck you Jack this has nothing to do with what I did with Abby,” Cole snapped stepping closer to him. “This isn’t even the same thing so how in the hell could you bring that up?” He added crossing his arms over his chest.
“This has everything to do with you and Abby you jackass,” Jack yelled not afraid to have one of this family members come down at this point. They were too far gone for anyone else's help at this point.
Scoffing Cole took two more steps closer to Jack only for him to take two more back. “You know what J, you just pulled an Abby too!” He fumed hands flying all over the place. “At least I wasn’t fucking dating someone when I did it.”
That’s when it happened, Jack had reached his breaking point being reminded of what happened with his last relationship and how he had cheated on you. Winding up he was ready to throw the punch, but as soon as did Cole caught on. Both stumbled back holding their left eye.
“Why are you fucking standing for her? You’re my best friend! You’re supposed to stand up for me!” Jack cried over the sound of feet climbing down the stairs. “Cole you’re supposed to be with me on this, tell her it was a mistake,” Jack mumbled not sure how to feel other than betrayed.
Cole sighed before running running his hands through his hair. “Yeah well I wasn’t a fucking asshole who cheated, so of course I’m going to stand up for the victim in this situation, and Y/n’s my friend too buddy. Get that through your thic-”
“You cheated?” Her voice was soft as she tried her hardest to keep her composure. Ellen was shocked, she thought she had raised her boys better than that. The room fell silent and Jack’s eyes went wide not because he didn’t know she was there. “Jack Hughes you cheated on Y/n?” She asked again voice raising without yelling.
That’s when both boys saw the tears in her eyes. “Mom listen - please,” Jack started to beg feeling awful for hurting his mom this way. He stepped forward to her but she only backed away from him. “Please mom,” he whispered, but Cole swooped in before he got the chance.
“Yeah Ellen he did,” Cole answered shooting a glare to seventeen year old, “and now he’s blaming me for Y/n finding out when this is all his own mess.” The words went right through her as she dropped down on to the couch, her head in her hands trying to hide the tears that were falling.
Cole looked to his best friend and shook his head. “You didn’t just hurt Y/n/n Jack, you hurt everybody around you. Your mom, me, your family. God I hope Y/n doesn’t take you back, drunk or not you cheated on her and don’t deserve a girl like her. So just think about that, because nobody’s going to think of you the same anymore. You’re not perfect J, you fucked up, and big time. I’ll see you tomorrow,” he spat at Jack like he was nothing, like they were enemies.
Glancing to Ellen over his shoulder as he walked up stairs he sighed. “I thought I raised you better than that Jack, and to hear you were drunk when you did it? I don’t even know who you are,” she whispered staring up at the black eyes Cole had given him. “But I know my son would never do that,” she cried as Cole turned around to keep walking, “not when he knew it would break his mother’s heart too.”

and they were roommates - auston matthews
summary: being the auston matthews roommate had its perks. it also had it’s downsides. seeing countless one night-stands walk out of his room being one of them. not to mention the fact you’re in love with him.
warnings: swearing, angst, little bit suggestive at the end
word count: [4,098] haha this is the most i’ve ever written
“I’m just a poor boy nobody loves me!” The famous Queen lyrics fell from your lips as you jumped around the kitchen in a pair of pajama shorts, and on of Auston’s tee-shirts. The only thing on your mind was making a pot coffee and finding a midnight snack. Classes were a killer, but nothing was that bad when you had any Queen songs blasting through your earbuds.
“Who the hell are you?” The voice was unfamiliar and very bitchy at that. So when you turned around to see a tall blond glaring you it wasn’t shocking. This was a normal thing, well not that normal.
Right as you opened your mouth to answer an idea popped into your head. “I’m Auston’s girlfriend. What the hell are you doing in my apartment?” Your arms crossed over your chest as you examined the girl. She was pretty, and was wearing one of his button-ups. Your e/c eyes snapped to look back up at her green ones as her mouth hung open. “Well, I’m waiting?”
Her silence allowed you the time to take your earbuds out and just glare at her. “I didn’t know you had a girlfriend,” her voice was barely a whisper as she looked away from you. That’s when you saw him standing in the hallway in a pair of boxers.
“I don’t,” Auston replied before smirking at her. The look on the blonds face only twisted into more confusion. “She’ Y/n, the roommate.” Her green eyes snapped away from Auston to look back at you. A fake smile plastered across your face greeted her. “Trac just go back to my room, I’ll be there in a sec.”
The girl blindly followed his orders as he walked deeper into the spacious kitchen. His smile fell as he stared down at you. “Why do you always have to do that?” He then sassed.
“Do what Aus?” You asked batting your eyelashes trying to play dumb. When his arms crossed over his chest you knew he wasn’t amused by your joke. “Why do you always have to bring a new girl home?” This time your arms crossed over your chest.
The Hispanic hockey player remand silent as he looked away from you and around the kitchen. His eyes landed on the leftover chicken fried rice you had sitting on the counter. Without another word he scoped up the container and walked off with it. Your mouth hung open as you heard him slam the door to his bedroom. “That’s my food you fucking prick!” You screamed silently hoping you didn’t wake up any neighbors.
Stomping your way to his room you banged your fist against it. When it whipped open “Trac” was standing there your food in her hands. “Oh I’m sorry was this yours?” Your stone cold e/c eyes shot right through her and to his brown ones.
“You’re fucking dead Matthews,” you hissed before offering him the finger. The door was shut in your face and you could feel your anger boiling, but not because of the stupid food. It was because there was another different girl sleeping in his bed tonight, only you didn’t know that’s why you were mad.
You thought this was all about chicken fried rice, and a term paper due in the morning. God how wrong you were.
Steph sat across from you wearing a disapproving look. If it was for your actions, or Auston’s you weren’t sure. You just knew she looked pissed. “So you’re mad because one of Auston’s hook-ups ate your chicken fried rice? Y/n/n that’s low even for you.”
Your mouth dropped open, “I paid for that food. And I’m not mad she ate it, I’m mad that Auston - my childhood best friend - stole it and gave it to her, knowing I would get pissed off. You don’t mess with my food, and Aus knows that.” Her pointed look hardened. “It’s the truth Steph I swear!”
The blonds shoulders shrugged before taking a bit of her pizza. “Are you sure you were upset the rice being eaten?”
“Yes!” You cried for what seemed like the thousandth time. Your arms crossed over you chest as you sunk into your seat as she stared at you, gears visibly turning in her head.
“I don’t know Y/n/n, it just seems like you’re worked up at the fact that Auston had another new girl in your apartment this week. I still think you have a crush on him,” Steph then explained with a teasing smile. This conversation was brought up every single time you mentioned Auston and his habits, and Steph would always answer with this. “Just admit it you have a crus-”
“I do not have a crush on him,” you huffed frowning. “We’re just roommates, who’ve been best friends for their whole lives. The feeling is mutual trust me.”
Her head shook at your lame attempt to cover for yourself - for the feelings you weren’t sure you had. “That’ how it always starts. Blah, blah, blah, oh and they roommates.” Your e/c eyes narrowed at her trying to challenge to her continue her thoughts. “Fine if you wouldn’t admit it to me yet, I’ll be waiting just to tell you I told you so.”
She smirked as she finished her thought knowing she had you right where she wanted you. Only you were had to match it with your own. “That’s fine by me, but Steph you’re gonna be waiting for the rest of your life because I will never admit that I have a crush on Auston. It will never happen.”
Oh just how wrong you were, because she wouldn’t have to wait long.
When you pushed open the door to your apartment you expected to see Auston’s hockey gear laying around the floor. What you didn’t expect to see was a cute brunette straddling his waist making out on your brand new couch. With your better judgement thrown out the window you slammed the door to make your presence known to them.
Both of their heads snapped to look over at you standing in the entryway smirking. The glare that your childhood best friend gave you, was one that could kill. “Good afternoon my lovely best friend,” you taunted with a sickly sweet voice, “and good afternoon to you my best friends new conquest. I’m Y/n, will you be staying for lunch, or maybe you already ate.”
“What the hell Y/n,” Auston huffed as his new friend climbed off of his lap. “Don’t be such a bitch.” Your e/c eyes rolled as you walked into the kitchen setting down the grocery bags. Quickly you started to put things away, while working on making lunch for Auston and yourself still unsure if she was staying.
You were sitting on a bar stool when she walked into the kitchen, mindlessly scrolling through social media. She didn’t move once she crossed into the kitchen, just stood there and stared at you - waiting for you to look up at her. When she realized you weren’t going to give her the time of day, she cleared her throat.
“I’m Lucy,” she announced her voice sounding different than the rest of the girls Auston had brought home before. She sounded like, well an actually person. She didn’t seem as fake, and somehow that made your heart hurt a little. Not to mention it made it a little harder to be a bitch to her. “And uh, Auston invited me to stay for lunch, that’s if it’s okay with you.”
Your eyebrows raised as you glanced back to the tall dark skinned center. “Why does it matter if it’s okay with me Aus?” You asked coming off a little stronger than intended. “It’s never mattered before, so why should it now?” His brown eyes looked away from you with a frown.
“Because you’re my best friend Y/n/n, and my roommate,” he answered with a small smile, but even that hurt you. You were the roommate, and nothing more. And now you were slowly starting to see just why cared so much about the different girl that came home with him.
You liked your roommate. You liked Auston Matthews, but nobody was going to find out about. And there was no way in hell that he would find out about it, not when it would just end up in you getting hurt.
“How is he?” You asked over the phone with Auston’s mother. “Not too upset I hope,” you added before taking a scoop of ice cream. She sighed before getting ready to answer you. From her side of the phone you could here the other mom’s talking and moving waiting for their sons to com out of the locker room following the loss.
“He’s okay I think. I haven’t had the chance to really talk to him, plus they didn’t play bad, I think?” You laughed along with Ema at her attempt to see the bright side for her son. “No but on a more serious note thank you again for picking me up from the airport. It means a lot hija. Especially since you’re so busy with classes finishing up. Are you excited to finally be done?”
Sighing you started to smile. “Overjoyed really. I’m so sick and tired of being stressed about deadlines or essays. I can’t wait to finally do what I love for a living instead of classes.” You could heard Ema agree with you through the phone before you continued. “Now if I could just find a job and place.”
It had slipped through your lips faster than you could stop yourself, and now there was no stopping it. Ema Matthews now knows that you wanted to move out of the apartment you shared with your best friend since kindergarten. “Move out? You don’t really mean that do you sweetheart?” She was shocked really. More shocked than she should have been. She figure you and Auston would live together and until you admitted you loved each other and ended up together.
That and she had money on it between her and your own mother.
“I mean,” you started out slowly. Treading on water careful to not sink. “We all knew it would happen sooner than later. I finished school and that was our deal Plus Auston needs his own space even though he says he doesn’t. I think it’s time, he honestly still can’t want me living there.”
It was the Hispanic women’s turn to sigh before muttering in Spanish. Something you could only assume was about how wrong you were. “Of course he wants you there Y/n. There won’t be a day that he doesn’t. Auston just doesn’t have it in him to admit to himself, and you that you’re what he really wants. He loves you, you know that.” You stayed silent as you bit your lip. He loved you, just not how you wanted him too. “He’d be lost without you there.”
“And I’m miserable. I need to move out.” Your confession caught yourself off guard. You’d been holding this inside for a long time, and somehow talking to Ema it was finding a way to force it’s way out. “I can’t keep watching him bring different girls home after games, it kills me. I need to move out. I’m moving out.”
That’s when it all clicked inside your head, along with Ema’s. “You love him,” she answered in a hushed whisper. “That’s why you want to move out. Oh sweetie you need to tell him how you feel. I know he feels the same. He always has.”
“I don’t love him Ema,” you denied trying to break your lie. “I just need a break fro-”
“Y/n/n?” Your name sounded as sweet as honey coming from his lips. “Did you watch the game?” His voice was full of life as he asked you a question you thought that didn’t matter. Only to him it meant the world. “Please tell me you did.”
“Of course I did Aus,” you replied with a small smile he couldn’t see. “I always do, and always will.” You could piratically see the knowing smile forming on Ema’s face, because a mothers always right.
And even though you wouldn’t confess to it, you were in love with Auston Matthews, but you were only the roommate.
You were sitting in your room at your desk when you heard the front door open. You expected the sound of two pairs of feet, but only one was heard this time. Something that hadn’t happened in awhile. Auston’s footsteps got louder as he came closer to your room.
Then your door was pushed open and he looked at you with red eyes, and messy hair. Bags were under his eyes, and he looked awful. Like he hadn’t slept since the first night of the mothers trip. Your e/c eyes raked over his body trying to see if he was hurt and that was the cause of his appearance, but it wasn’t. Then his mouth opened he on the verge of crying once more.
“What do you mean you’re moving?” His voice cracked as he asked you this. Your mind started to race as you thought back to the conversation you had with Ema a couple of days ago. What you didn’t realize is that Auston had heard every single word. Even the ones you didn’t want him to hear. “You’re moving out Y/n?” Auston asked with a frown, “Why are you moving out?”
Your e/c eyes looked away from his brown ones because you couldn’t handle the way his brown eyes were looking at you. “Well, uh, I’m graduating, and so-”
“So what? That means you have to move?” He asked trying not to get angry at you, or at the situation.
“Well when we first came up with this idea we agreed that’d I only stay until I finished college. I’m about to graduate Aus. That means it’s time for me to find my own place, and that might mean leaving Toronto.” It hurt to admit it to someone other than Ema, let alone the fact that it was Auston.
His head shook as he leaned on the door frame. “Leave Toronto? You can’t leave Y/n, I need my best friend here with me.” Best friend, words that had been thrown around by him so easily. Clearly there wasn’t any feelings for you on his side, so why should you stay? Why should you make yourself miserable by watching him bring a new girl home after games?
“All depends on where I can find a job, and maybe that means going back home. Or somewhere else. I’m not sure yet Aus.” He nodded not wanting to say anything he’d regret later. He didn’t want to hurt you, and he didn’t want you to leave either. He thought it was selfish of him to beg you to stay. “And if I stay in Toronto it’s not like I won’t see you Aus, I just won’t be living here anymore.”
Auston padded across the room with his hands on his hips. “Plans change Y/n/n, and I want these plans to change. I want you to still be my roommate. Please don’t move out. Please just keep living here, with me.”
It sounded so easy, and was what you wanted to hear from him. You wanted him to beg for you to stay. Then reality set back in and you realized you’d have to leave at some point. There would be a future Mrs. Auston Matthews that got to move in, kicking you out. Why not just speed up the process for him. “Auston I’m going to have to move out at some point anyways. This way is just easier for us both.”
He was quiet as he stared at you frowning. “I’m sure the girls you bring home don’t like the fact that there’s already a girl sleeping in your apartment? What are you going to do when you get and actual girlfriend Aus? I can grantee you she wouldn’t like me living here with you. This just speeds it up some, so we don’t have to worry about this in the middle of the play-offs when you’ll be stressed to the max. It needs to happen now Aus.” Your explanation to made sense to him, but he wish it hadn’t.
He wasn’t ready for you move out, or the fact that you could be moving from Toronto all together. How would he ever see you if you moved back home, or somewhere else in the US? That meant having to text and call you, and that meant less and less time talking to you. Something he wasn’t ready to give up, or wanted to give up at all. “No girl is going to care,” it was a lie slipping through his lips and he knew this, but he was desperate. “Please Y/n, don’t move out.”
“I’m moving out Auston,” you huffed crossing your arms over your chest. “It’s gonna save us trouble in the future, and then you’ll thank me for it.” He shook his head causing some tears to slip out of his eyes. The last time you saw him cry was the game seven loss to Boston, and you couldn’t help but wonder why. “Crying isn’t going to get me to stay Auston. I’m moving, there’s going to be a time when you don’t want me - and maybe that’s not, or maybe it’s coming soon, but this will just be easier for us. The both of us.”
You stood up from your desk and walked over to him. Your hands slowly cupped his cheeks to help wipe the tears away. “Why are you going to leave when you love me?” His voice was a broken prayer, a last hope to get you to stay. “I heard you on the phone with my mom. If I stop bringing a new girl home every night, will you please stay?”
Your mouth went dry as he stared at you with hope. Something you didn’t want to give him, not when you were still going to leave. “I never said that I love you Auston,” and just like that his hope was gone. “I said that I can’t stand the new girls every night. That I’m miserable here. That I am moving out. I’m sorry.”
Auston pulled away from you quickly not wanting you to see the tears falling. He was taking it harder than you were, and you were the one that had so much more to let go of. He walked towards the door but stopped before he made it all of the way out. Confused as of why he just stood there you stared at him. Then he turned around and faced you again, tears slipping down his cheeks.
“What if I told you I love you? Would you leave if I did?” You nodded your head slowly thinking that it was just as a friend, just as a roommate. A sad smile cracked on his face, “Doesn’t mean I can’t try right?” Confused you your mouth opened to ask as he crossed the room back over to you. “I love you Y/n L/n. It’s taking me to fucking long to tell you but, I do. I love you, and I’m about to lose you. Just please,” he begged lacing his hands with yours, “please don’t move out. Please don’t leave.”
Your mind was racing a million miles per second and you couldn’t form a single thought. Without realizing it your mouth opened to speak, and what came out wasn’t what you wanted too. “I’m moving out Auston,” it was whispered out quickly, and cut through the his heart like a knife. “I can’t stay here, not anymore.”
It was everything you didn’t want to say to him. You wanted to say you’d stay, that you loved him. There was no going back now, because you couldn’t say what you wanted to. You said something that hurt you both, and left you as only the roommate. And probably stripped you of the best friend title.
You managed to keep it together as you met his big brown eyes. “I’m sorry, but I need to leave.” Only he left before you did, right out your door and out of the apartment. Who knew being roommates could cause so much trouble.
It had been two weeks since you told Auston you were leaving, and since then you were no longer a struggling college student. You found a job, and loved it. There was no longer any new girls around your apartment, just cardboard boxes laying here and there.
So now you started at an empty bedroom, nothing remaining other than the pineapple lights that hung around the room. Something you refused to take with you, not when Auston had bought those as a welcome home present for you when you first moved in. With a heavy heart you forced yourself to look around the room seeing just how bare it looked without you living in it.
Your eyes landed on the wall that used to hold all of your pictures wishing that they were still taped there, but they weren’t. You had hoped you’d see the newest picture to the collection; the one of you and Auston beaming brightly as you held your college diploma. It should’ve been front and center next to the one of you two after he went first overall. Expect they were loaded safety in one of the boxes.
It was slowly becoming harder to breath as you walked over to the boxes labeled pictures not knowing exactly what you were doing. Ripping the tape off you pulled out the two pictures on top, and smiled down at them. The pair of you had looked so different from the draft to now. Slowly you turned and faced the light blue wall before placing the two pictures in their rightful spots.
Happy tears stained your cheeks as you looked them side by side on display. “Y/n it’s time to go,” Auston called before entering your old room. He sounded broken, and when his eyes landed on the pictures and pineapple lights he was. “What are those still doing up? I thought you packed up all of the pictures and the lights.”
You turned to face him and he could see the tear stains on your red cheeks. “I thought that the wall looked empty without them,” you replied hoping he would understand what you were hinting at. When his brown eyes met your e/c ones you knew he understood. “Too good of a place for them.”
“You’re not moving,” he whispered trying his hardest to bite back his smile. “You’re staying here with me?” You didn’t even give yourself a chance to answer before throwing yourself on to him. Your arms wrapped around him in a tight hug, getting him as close to you as humanly possible.
“I can’t move, not when I’m already home,” you muttered quietly against the skin right underneath his ear, “with the person I love.” He pulled away from you enough so he could look you in the eyes just to make sure this was in fact real and you weren’t lying to him. “I love you Auston,” you stated as if it didn’t take you and emotional life time to say, “and I’m not leaving.”
“And they were roommates!” Mitch called from somewhere outside your room. “Thank god because I don’t think I could handle a sad Auston and Y/n, to much to deal with.” His head peeped into the room with a cheeky smile, “Since I’m not needed here anymore, I’m gonna let you to kids have the place to yourselves. Make up for lost time,” he teased, “but make sure you’re safe. I don’t need another Auston Matthews to deal with, well yet.”
Your eyes went wide as the chatty brunette wouldn’t shut up as he made his way out. “He’s right you know,” Auston stated with a smirk, “I have a lot of time to make up for, so why not start right now?”
“That can wait until after we finishing unpacking my stuff, you waited this long what’s another couple of hours,” you teased trying to see if he would fall for your game. His eyes rolled before his lips were pressed against yours. Breathless you pulled away from hims dazed as he smirked down at you knowing he had won. “Yeah you’re idea is way better, make up for lost time it is.”
So much for being just roommates.

prank war - auston matthews
summary: while laying around on an off day watching vines y/n and auston start a prank war that drags everyone into it, even babs.
warnings: swearing, pranks,
word count: [5,867] - i got carried away
a/n: this takes place during the 2016-2017 season
Pushing yourself up off the ground you slowly crawled back on to the couch dying from laughter. Your stomach hurt from all of the laughing that you were doing. “What the hell Y/n/n?” was the first thing you heard Auston say as he walked into the living room,
Grabbing the remote you paused the video of old Vines and let your laughter die down to speak to him. A smile graced your face as your eyes scanned over his sleepy body. “Sorry if my laughing woke you up,” You started to say as heat rushed to your cheeks. Your eyes ran down his body before landing on the script tattoo.
“You didn’t.” The sound of this voice caused you to met his gaze and watched as he smiled before pulling a worn out Maple Leafs tee shirt on. “But if I wanted to spend my off day watching old Vines I’d be hanging out with Mitchy.”
Scoffing you crossed your arms over your chest and turned to face the TV once more. “Mitchy has nothing on my knowledge of Vines,” you then challenged.
“Oh I’m sure he does bub,” he countered before dropping down next to you. His arms wrapped around your waist pulling you into his lap. “But by all means please start the video again.” Slapping his chest for the Mitch comment you turned in his arms to start the video again.
Your laughter rang throughout the apartment as the hanger Vine played over and over again. “See this is why I don’t need college,” You managed to explain somehow between your laughter. When you looked up at Auston his face was bright red, and tears filled his eyes from laughing so hard.
“You’re gonna be a hanger?” Your head nodded quickly before rushing up out of his lap. Swiftly you ran down the hallway to your shared bedroom and straight to the closet. With a white hanger in your hand you started to sprint back to the living room. Only instead of making it to the living room you slipped and fell on the hardwood flooring, completely smacking your ass and upper body on the ground.
Moaning out in pain you could hear as Auston’s laughter bounced off the apartments walls. He was hunched over laughing harder than you’ve ever seen him laugh. “Auston what the fuck?” You asked slowly sitting up hissing in pain. Curious as to why your clothes now felt wet and slimy you ran your hands on the floor to feel oil coating it. “Did you dump vegetable oil on the ground so I’d fall?” His laughter hadn’t stopped as you spoke but only got worse.
Auston fell to the ground slowly and turned to lay on his back. He brought his phone up above his head just as you started to slowly stand up not wanting to fall and hurt yourself worse. “Aus why’d you do that?” You questioned again rubbing your back and ass. Slowly he raised himself into a sitting position making sure his phone was at eyes level the whole time.
A wide smile was spread across his cherry red face, matching tears running down his chees as he couldn’t stop laughing. “Watch - watch the video,” the hockey player wheezed handing you his phone. Grunting you tore his phone away from him his hands his laughter slowing down.
Your e/c eyes started down at the phone screen watching as a video started to play. It had started out with your figure running to the bedroom, and instantly changed to watching as Auston ran into the kitchen to grab the oil. A frown crossed your face as you watched him pour the oil on to the floor only seconds before you came running back out from the bedroom. Your eyes went wide as you watched your foot his the oil covered floor and your body go flying in the air.
Closing out of the video you say that your boyfriend had sent it to the Leafs’ group chat were Willy and Mitch had both answered with videos of them laughing their asses off. Huffing out of anger you locked his phone before throwing it down at his chest. “This isn’t over Matthews,” you seethed before rubbing your ass once more, “Oh no, this is just the start of this war.”
“Hey wanna go get ice cream?” You asked from your position in Auston’s lap. His brown eyes pulled away from the caps jets game to meet your e/c ones. “Please? I really want ice cream.” When he still didn’t cave in you sighed, “I’ll drive.”
Auston nodded his head, “Ice cream sounds good. The Rover keys are on the island.” You sat up slowly not wanting to hurt your back from earlier today. Only the hissing of pain you let out caused Auston to stare at you worriedly. Once standing you snatched up the Range Rover keys before making your way to the garage.
“Does your back hurt that bad?” Auston asking lacing his hand with your free one. Biting your lip you looked up at him and nodded. “Shit, I’m sorry bub. I didn’t mean to hurt you, I just wanted to be funny.”
You licked your lips not wanting him to see the smirk that was slowly forming on your face. “I know Aus, that’s why I’m not mad.” A soft smile crossed your face knowing very well that you were about to get back at him for the oil on the floor. Auston muttered under his breath before kissing your forehead. Climbing into the drivers seat of Auston’s Range Rover and waited for him to buckle. “Ready to go?”
Looking over at him he nodded. “I’m always ready for ice cream,” he stated an over joyed smile spreading across his face. “Even if it isn’t on Babs’ new diet.” A laugh escaped both of our mouths before you started the drive to the nearest McDonald’s. After a short drive you pulled into the drive thru and ordered a vanilla shake and an ice cream cone. Handing the cone to Auston you sipped on your shake.
Your smirk had worked its way back on to your face as you looked around for cars. Exchanging the shake for your phone you carefully pulled up your camera to video the prank. Checking your mirrors once more you slammed on the breaks causing Auston’s face to slam into the ice cream, and for his forehead to his the dashboard. “What the fuck Y/n!” He exclaimed, “you ruined my ice cream cone.”
Your laughter bounced off the car windows and doors. “I told you this wasn’t over,” You teased before stopping the video and putting your phone down to focus on driving. “Don’t mess with me Matthews, I win prank wars.”
His brown eyes narrowed on you as he whipped around in his seat to face you. Ice cream was smeared against his left cheek and part of his nose. “Oh trust me L/n, you shouldn’t have done that. You messed with my ice cream now it’s personal.”
You rolled your eyes and licked your lips while stopping at a red light. Turning to face him you let out a teasing chuckle. “That’s really cute Aus, but we both know I out prank you every time.”
Auston’s frown was replaced with a wicked smile. “Don’t worry bub, I stepped up my game since the last prank battle, but this time - this is a full blown war.”
Tiredly you unlocked the apartment door and pushed it open. Walking in to it fully you shut the door and rested your back against it. “Hey bub how was work?” Auston called from the living room as you reached down to peel your heels off.
“Sucked,” you answered walking to the living room to find him and Mitch playing Fortnite. “Hey Mitchy no Steph today?” You asked hoping that your best friend would be present.
Shaking his head his blue eyes stayed flued to the screen, “She’ll be over later. Didn’t want to sit and wait for you.”
Your head nodded, “Can’t say I blame her.” Who would want to sit and watch two boys play video games all day? “Okay well I’m gonna jump in the shower,” you announced in case some sort of emergency happened.
“Can I join?” Auston asked causing you to turn and look back at the cheeky smile that laced his face. Before you decline his answer he added to his statement, “There’s bushes for a reason.” Scoffing you rolled your e/c eyes only to receive a kiss on the cheek and a smack on your bruised ass in return. “Love you bub.”
You ignored him before continuing to walk to your shared bedroom your middle finger in the air so both brown haired hockey players would see it. Mitch’s laugh filled the apartment until you slammed the door once in the bedroom. Lazily you grabbed towels and set them out before hooking up your music to the speaker. Shawn Mendes’ new album blared through it with in a matter of seconds.
Setting the water to a warm temperature you stripped and got in letting the water try to relax your muscles. Sighing after at least a couple minutes in the water spray you started to wash yourself clean before turning the shower off. Pulling the shower curtain open you reached for the towel to wrap your hair up.
Grabbing the second one you wrapped it around your body and stepped out on to the mat, only to hear a popping noise. Slightly jumping you set your other foot down and it made the same noise as before. With dry fee you stepped off the mat and bent over to see that Auston had put bubble wrap underneath it.
Shaking your head you opened the door that connected to the bedroom to see Auston and Mitch both sitting on the bed with shit eating grins. “Oh I stepped up my game sine last time,” you went to tease, “the bubble wrap isn’t really stepping up your game Aus, and plus you got help.”
His shoulders shrugged as he looked to the older male. “It was his idea,” he informed then pointing to the oldest in the room, “and it’s a war babe, get all the help that you can.”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” you snipped before turning to the closet. Wetting your lips you pulled the doors open to an empty closet. Your e/c eyes went wide as you stared into it confusedly.
“Something wrong babe?” Auston called from the bed where him and Mitch were laughing up a storm and no doubt recording your confusion. “Can’t find something to wear?” He snickered.
Holding the towel a little less tighter you turned and face the idiotic hockey players. “I don’t know you tell me babe, I could always go naked.” You noticed how their eyes went wide knowing very well that you liked to push buttons and were too stubborn to give in.
Mitch’s shoulders shrugged as Auston slightly moved the camera off of you in case you stayed true to your threat. “Why would you go naked when you have clothes?” Clinching your jaw you glared at the pair, “or do you not have clothes?”
“Where are my damn clothes assholes? Otherwise I drop the towel,” you huffed as you loosened your grip once more making Auston’s eyes bulge out of his head. Mitch had started to laugh showing that he was calling your bluff which how managed to get Auston to start laughing once again. Groaning out of frustration you gripped the towel tighter before walking to Auston’s closet to see that it was empty also. “I hope you realize that I will not be putting all of the clothes away.”
This caused the laughter to come to an abrupt end. “What?” Auston asked, “what do you mean you won’t put the clothes away? Where are they?”
Shaking your head you stormed out of the bedroom to be met with the same popping sound as before. Looking down the hallway floor you saw that it was covered in bubble wrap. “You are so dead Matthews!” You yelled while starting down the hallway hoping to find your clothes. “And don’t think you have a free pass Marner, I’m taking you both down.”
“So why am I helping you again?” Willy asked before taking a bite of his banana, “I mean I’m always down to prank but you really think we can beat Mitchy and Auston?” You glared over at the blonde Swede causing his hands to fly up in surrender.
A wicked smile took hold of your face as you placed your banana peel on the tiled floor knowing that Auston and Mitch don’t look where they’re walking. “Trust me Willy I’m much better at pranking than those two, we have this in the bag. I even have a couple tricks up my sleeve saved for later.”
His blue eyes widened at you, “I’m gonna end up in the cross fire aren’t I?” Your head nodded as you took the banana peel from him. “You’re lucky we’re friends Y/n/n.”
Smiling you patted his chest before grabbing another yellow fruit. “I know I am, now eat another banana we gotta get these around the apartment so incase they see them we have back up ones.” He sighed before following my orders and started to eat one.
“We better hurry this up, Mitchy just texted and said they’ll be back in five.” Hurriedly you reached for the bundle of bananas and unpeeled them not caring about eating them any more.
“You stay here, I’m gonna go spread these out,” Will nodded his head. “Oh and hide those,” you added pointing to the unpeeled bananas sitting on the kitchen island. You started walking around the apartment placing banana peels in random places on the tile.
As soon as you heard the door start to unlock your e/c eyes locked with Will’s and you bolted into the living room and started up a game of chel. “Do you think this is going to work?” He asked while you pulled your phone out your eyes landing on the banana peels right before the carpet.
Before you could answer Auston and Mitch walking in setting the food on the island. “We’re back bitches, and we bare food.” Your eyes rolled at your dork of a boyfriend watching where he was stepping just like that him and Mitch both stepped on a banana peel only to slip a little. A frown painted yours and Will’s faces in disappointment.
“Wow that’s real original Y/n/n,” Mitch called while bending over to pick up the banana peel and threw it in the trash. “It’s going to take more than a little ban-”
And just like that Mitchell Marner was falling backwards bringing Auston down with him. There was a loud thud heard over Will’s and yours laughter. High-fiving each other he sent the video to the group chat.
“What was that Mitch? It’s gonna take a lot more than a banana peel?” Will taunted as the pair pushed themselves off the ground. “Because from what it looks like it took you both out.”
Auston stood up fully and stomped his way over to the pair of you, only to slip and fall on another banana. “Huh, I guess they really are slippery.” A glared was sent your way after your comment but it only made you laugh more.
Still laying on the floor Auston flipped you and Will off. “You are so dead, this isn’t anywhere near over,” he huffed before coming and wrapping his arms around your waist.
“We wouldn’t have it any other way,” you challenged meeting Will’s gaze before staring back up into Auston’s eyes. “And just wait, you’re gonna wish you never started this war.”
Auston’s eyes pulled away from yours to meet Mitch’s who was still standing in the kitchen. “Don’t count on it bub, you gotta learn how to lose. And that’s what we’re best at teaching.”
Grocery bags lined your arms as you struggled to get the key in the lock. Sighing you banged your fist against the door, “Auston? Babe can you come open the door please?” There was shuffling heard before he pulled the door open. “Thank you baby,” you added with a smile before kissing his cheek, “you’re a life saver.”
Auston chuckled before moving out of the way so you could get by and fit through the door way. “More like an arm saver bub,” he teased before shutting the door. Turning on his heels he fixed the towel sitting on his waist before looking to me. “If you would’ve called me I would’ve came down to help with those.”
Your eyes glanced at the bags before dropping half of them on the island. “I did call Aus, but you were in the shower,” you replied eyes running over his half covered body. “So I figured I’d bring ‘em up, no biggy.”
His head shook as you took the remaining bad and placed them on the table. “I’m sorry Y/n/n, next time I’ll get them kay?” You nodded your head while turning to look at him. Then you heard a loud crashing sound. With wide eyes you turned back around to see the table top was flat on the ground. Auston’s laughter filled the apartment while you had to stop yourself from screaming in annoyance.
“Auston please tell me that the table broke and this isn’t part of the of the prank war.” His laughter was answer enough. “Well for that your can put the food away, oh and you might wanna hurry your ice cream is melting.”
There was an audible gasp before I heard his heavy footsteps run against the tile floor. “No, not the ice cream!” Laughing to yourself you walked into the living room. Carefully you put pressure on the couch to make sure it wasn’t going to go crashing down like the table did.
When it passed the test you sat down and pulled your phone our to spot a text from Will.
Willy: just so you know they pranked me today at practice, watch your back Y/n/n.
Biting your lip you were quick to type out an answer asking him to explain when you saw him at morning skate tomorrow. “Hey Aus?” You called sitting up to see he was down with the grocery's. “What happened at practice?”
His shoulders shrugged, “Went over some drills. Break out plays PK, power play stuff for the game tomorrow. Not much else.” Nodding your head you stood up and followed him into the bedroom. “Need something bub?” He asked looking over his shoulder at you.
You were leaning up against the door frame watching his back muscles move as he pulled out his clothes from one of the baskets. “Just wondering when you’re going to put our clothes back in the closet that’s all.” Turning back away from you he was quick to pull on a pair of sweats and a tee shirt. “Wanna watch a movie?”
“In here?” Auston asked his voice raising a little bit surprised by the sudden change in my questions. “I’d rather watch one in the living room.” Your eyebrow raised as you glanced at the bed before looking to his brown eyes again.
“No thanks,” you answered before running and diving onto the comfortable king sized bed. Your screams soon filled the bedroom as the bed came crashing down. With your eyes closed tight you didn’t stop screaming until you felt Auston’s hands on your lower back.
A cheeky smile was wide across his face his whole body moving as he died of laughter. “That’s why,” he managed to get out in between his giggles.
Groaning you sat up and pulled him down on to the bed with you. There was a loud creaking noise causing your eyes to go wide as they meet each other. “I don’t think you thought this one through babe.”
His head shook his smile still staying the same, “The guys in the group chat think differently. Oh and you can thank Mitch for the table.” Rolling your eyes you muttered under your breath. “Just think, after we win tomorrow it'll be easier for me to take your to bed.”
Scoffing your slapped his chest multiple times, “You Auston Matthews are a major dork.” He sat up his smile growing as he did.
“How am I the dork? You’re the dork in this relationship.” As you sat up your mouth opened to answer him, but he put his hand over it to stop you from answering. “So are you and Willy going to surrender to Mitchy and I?”
Your brows furrowed, “What did you do to Willy?” You grew scared for your pranking partner as a wicked smirk replaced his loving smile. His lips then started to attack my neck, “What happened to Willy?!” Your question didn’t come out as serious as you wanted thanks to the giggles that filled your body due to his kisses.
“Surrender and you’ll get to know,” he whispered darkly against your skin. Shrugging him off of you he frowned, “I’m taking that as a no to you surrendering.”
You nodded your head before pushing yourself up off the bed. “Oh and don’t worry baby, you’ve gotten nothing to be afraid of,” you cooed with a cheeky wink. “Oh wait, yeah, you do.”
“What are you going to do?” Steph asked as we watched the boys walked down the tunnel and head for the locker room. “Honestly, I’m ready for this,” she added with a glowing smile, “I’m sick of them practicing their pranks on me first.”
Turning away from the ice you stood up and stared at her in awe. “And you didn’t tell me,” you pouted, “some best friend you are.” Slowly the pair of you made your way down to the locker room.
Her hands flew up in surrender. “They were blackmailing me I swear, but otherwise, I would’ve told you. Plus you already had Will helping you out.” You nodded your head as you leaned back on the wall waiting for the boys to emerge from the locker room. “This better be the best prank ever or, I’m lying for you and Willy for no reason.”
You smirked before glancing down at you phone seeing a text from Will saying that everyone was almost out. “Oh trust me this is the best grande finale of pranks.”
She was quick to pick another topic of meeting up after the game so you looked natural as Auston and Mitch came sauntering out of the locker room. They were laughing at something on Auston’s phone not paying any attention to you two. “Hey bub remember this?” Auston then asked before showing you the first prank.
“That was hands down the best prank so far,” Morgan called from behind Mitch and Auston, “sorry Y/n/n.”
Your shoulders shrugged, “It’s okay Mo, just wait for my next move. It’s gonna be a game changer.” He smiled at you before starting to walk away. He shook his head at you before biding you guys a quick goodbye.
“So wanna grab a bite to eat?” Mitch asked looking between you and Steph. You glanced back to the blonde female, then to the locker room doors where the blond male was standing and waiting for you.
Secretly you nudged Steph and she too saw that you were needed. “We were going to go shopping and grab something to eat, but what if we go after the game?”
Auston nodded his head to agree with the plan. “Sounds good to me.” His arms wrapped around your waist as he hugged you, before his lips pressed against yours. “I love you bub. I’ll see you during warm-ups?” He asked with a small smile knowing it was out tradition.
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world Aus,” you answered letting him go, “oh and I love you too.” Him and Mitch turned around while walking to wave before disappearing out of the family area. “Okay now time for some fun, wait for me here?”
Steph nodded eagerly, “Obliviously, now hurry up before they decide that they need to come back.” Taking her advice you ran the short distance to the locker room where Will was standing outside waiting for you.
His normal smirk was plastered across his facing. “You have the tape don’t you?” He asked pushing away from the wall.
Scoffing you started walking past him, leading the way into the locker room. “Do I have the tape? Of course I have the tape dipshit. I’m here to win not lose.” Willy let out a short laugh as you walked into the main area of the locker room.
Looking around you found Auston’s stall right next to Will’s, and Mitch’s to the right of him, Only Will’s was taken apart. “Huh, so that’s what they did to you,” you commented looking at how he was missing the blue cushions, and shelf.
Nodding his head he grabbed Mitch’s skates before sitting on the floor in front of Auston’s stall. “Have you ever done this before?” He asked looking between the skates and the Scotch tape in your hands.
“Never, I mean my team did it but I never did,” you explained not knowing the first way to start this. “All I know is we have to make it flush against the blade otherwise they’ll be able to se-”
“Willy what the hell are you still - Y/n? What are you guys doing?” Babs voice was loud and confused as he walked back through the locker room. His eyes scanned over the scene in front of him with you holding Auston’s skates, Will with MItch’s. Then he saw the tape. “Need some help?”
With wide eyes you glanced down at Will who’s face mirrored yours. “You’re not mad we’re doing this?” The first liner asked the shock evident in his voice.
The head coach shook his head before sitting in the stall next to Auston’s. “I’ve heard all about this prank war, and I think it’s time Mitchy and Auson get what’s comin’ for ‘em.” You and Will shared a high-five before offering one up to Babs. Gladly he returned it before adding to his statement, “Plus after that oil on the floor prank that got you, it’s only fair.”
Your cheeks flushed red in embarrassment that even Babcock had seen the video. “It was pretty hilarious,” Will suggested before you glared at him. “But not as funny as the bananas.”
Your head nodded, “Well we should get started on this. Steph is waiting for me so we can go eat.” And with that Babs showed you how to get the tape on the blade without it looking like it was even there.
Finishing up you set your boyfriend’s skates back just the way they were as Will did the same with Mitch’s. “I’ll make sure that nobody messes with these before the game. Now get outta here, I’ve got stuff to do,” Babs instructed with a hearty laugh.
“Thank you so much, you have no idea how much this means to me,” you gushed standing up and turning to Babs.
A smile was still present on his face as he shook his head at you guys. “It’s no problem at all.” With that the pair of you disappeared from the locker room to meet Steph in the family area.
The smiles on yours and Will’s faces told the blond at all went well. “So are we all ready to go now?” She asked looking between the you and Will as her smile grew in size. “Because all of Canada is going to see this happen so it better be good,” she added.
“Don’t worry Steph all of Canada is going to be dying once they see what we did,” Will stated throwing his arm over yours shoulder. “This is going to be the best Hockey Night in Canada in a long time.”
“So you really think this is going to work?” Sydney asked as the three of you walked down to ice level. “I mean it is Auston and Mitch we’re talking about, they probably figured it out by now,” she added looking up from her phone to you.
Shrugging your shoulders you frowning. “Yeah, but they aren’t smart enough to check their skates, especially when it’s game day. Aus had his skates sharped yesterday so I know he didn’t check his.” Steph nodded to agree with you.
“I just you hope realized this is super immature, even for you,” the oldest of the three of you said. “Like seriously Y/n/n, you and Will could have done anything, do it at practice not a game that’s nationally televised.”
Your mouth opened to speak only nothing came out. Steph stared at you unsure of what do to. “Come on Syd live a little,” she then spoke with a cheery smile, “Babs helped them so it’s obviously okay. It’s only going to be seen by people who are in the arena since warm-ups aren’t even shown on tv. Plus we all know you’re dying to see this happen.”
Sydney’s serious face faded and turned into a smiling one. “Okay I guess you’re right, I just don’t get why you had to do it during a game.”
“To end the war,” you explained looking to the Maple Leafs’ bench waiting for them walk out. “I want to win, and to have the best prank this was the only way, and I figured it would be better to do it during warm-ups than going out for the game. They would never forgive me if I did that.”
They both laughed at you as the coaches and trainers slowly appeared on the bench. “It’s go time ladies, watch the master work.” The guys slowly came out of the locker and when it came time for Auston and Mitch to come out they did so perfectly fine.
Your eyes went wide and your mouth hung open, they had figured out the tape was on their skates. “You lost,” Steph said shocked, “how did you lose?” Slowly you turned to face her confused. There was then a banging on the glass in front of you.
Turning you faced Will who was smiling, how could he be smiling when you lost the war? “They’re not wearing the right skates,” he called through the glass. Your eyebrows rose as you looked to your friends. “They have to change into them before the game,” he said into the crack on the glass.
The new found information slowly ran through your head, and when it finally hit you the smirk that grew on you face was evil. “They are so going to kill you guys,” Syd called while Will skated away so you didn’t look suspicious, “and I can’t wait to see it happen.”
You rolled your eyes at her as you waved to Auston who was smiling over at you. “That’s the thing, they won’t kill us. I’ve had multiple prank wars over the years with Auston, and have only lost once. I’m still standing, and this is just showing that they can’t beat me.”
Sydney gave you a questioning look but let it go. “So are we going to just sit here, or go back to our seats? Where do you want to watch this happen from?” Your mind slowly ran over the different vantage points trying to think of the best one.
“Let’s go sit, this is one show that we can’t miss.”
Your e/c eyes were glued to the ice watching as Will passed the across ice to Auston, who put shot it right into Crawford’s glove. The only reason you looked away was because Steph nudged you. “Look,” she added with a wide smile.
There on the big screen was the replay of Auston and Mitch falling on their asses, but it was the recording those at home saw. Blue jerseys ran from the tunnel on to the ice, and when you saw the familiar blond hair as your marker you doubled over again.
Right behind Will was Auston. As soon as his blade touched the ice he was laying on his face. Mitch was right behind him and tried to side step the Arizona native. Only to end up in the same position.
The ACC filled with laughter at your mastermind prank, and you could feel the tears falling from your eyes. “That was hilarious,” you wheezed holding your stomach. The video continue to play showing the Auston and Mitch trying and failing to get up.
“You’ll never be able to top that,” Syd piped in wiping away her stray tears of joy. Nodding your head you watched as the screen turned from the video to you.
Waving to the fans in the Air Canada Center you smiled widely knowing very well that Auston and Mitch would be staring up at you. Your eyes glanced down to the Maple Leafs bench and there they were. Auston was glaring at you only to have a cheeky smile work it’s way on to your face.
And you had no idea why.
Until you heard it. The sound of his laughter played over the in arena sound system making you slowly look up to the big screen, ad there it was. The infamous Y/n slipping on oil prank. The loud thud of your body hitting the flooring of your apartment filled your ears.
Your cheeks went red, and you could feel steam blowing out of your ears. “They beat you,” Steph exclaimed just as shocked as you were. “They fucking beat you.”
The camera panned to a smiling Auston and Mitch acting as if they didn’t know what was going on. “I knew this was going to happen,” Sydney said with a sigh. “Y/n/n you should’ve just let this go.”
“They’re dead,” you deadpanned eyeing up your boyfriend from the stands. “I’m gonna kill them. You can’t beat me, I don’t lose.” Your arms crossed over your chest as you watched Auston blow you a kiss, Mitch following after his leader.
Then your eyes glanced to Will and Babs. Both of them were smiling and it hit you. “They played me!” You yelled jumping out of your chair right as the puck was dropped to end the commercial break. “They fucking played me.”
The two blonds shared a look confused at your sudden outburst. “Who played you Y/n?” Steph dared to ask.
“Babs and Willy,” you scoffed with a frown. “I only hope they know payback is a bitch, and her name is Y/n L/n.” Auston jumped the boards, and caught the cross ice pass from Will. The puck ended up in the back of the net over Crawford’s shoulder.
His brown eyes caught your e/c ones. The same cheeky smile worked it’s way on to his face before he pointed up at you, and the to the score board. The video playing again. My new goal celebration, he mouth to you. “She’s so going to kill him,” Steph called. “Auston Matthews is a dead man walking.” Man was she right about that.

and they were roommates: a series - auston matthews
welcome home
summary: even in the beginning there were new girls at the apartment, along with a promised autograph
warnings: swearing?
word count: [2,970]
“Wait, what do you mean Toronto?” Your father asked running his hand over his face. “You’re going to move to Toronto?” Sheepishly you nodded your head, praying your parents would be in agreement with you.
“Auston asked me to move there with him, best friends remember?” You added looking to your mom to help you with this. Even being a daddy’s girl you knew the only way you were going to get to Toronto was through you mom. “Please dad I want this, I want to be with Auston.”
The look you received from your mother was one you didn’t put any thought into. But little did you know was that your mother had a feeling, and a bet with Ema. “D/n, I think it would be good for her. She needs to experience other places, spend time there.”
“In Toronto? M/n just because they’re best friends doesn’t mean they need to be live with each other! In another country,” your father explained still trying to wrap his head around this. “What about college? What about Clarkson and your dreams Y/n?”
Slowly a smile grew on your face, “Well about that.” Pulling a piece of paper out from behind your back you walked over to hand it to him. “I applied, and well I was accepted.” His eyes ran over the words over, and over again.
Your e/c eyes met your mother’s e/c ones knowing he was finally ready to let you go. “Dad you pushed me to be friends with Auston, and we’re inseparable because of you. Please, just let me go. I’ll be with Auston so I won’t get hurt, he wouldn’t let anything happen to me.”
Dropping down to your knees in front of him you were ready to beg. Grabbing his hands you saw the tears in his eyes when he looked down at you. “I know kid,” he started with a soft smile. “It’s just I’m not ready to see you go.” Tears filled your own eyes as you rushed up to hug him.
“Dad, I’m never going to leave you. I’m never going to leave either of you guys, I’ll come back when Aus has his first game back here. And for everything-” your rambles were cut off by your parents laughter through their tears.
“Well since you’re leaving us then we have to get you packed, don’t we?” Pulling away from your father’s arms you looked over to your mom. “We can’t keep Auston waiting now, can we?”
Sighing you fell back on to your bed exhausted after packing all the clothes you figured you’d need for your new home. Only after you heard a car pull into the drive next door did you shoot up with excitement. A smile grew on your face already knowing it was him. Pushing yourself off your bed you held on to your phone, and sprinted out of your room.
Passing by your parents in the process. “Auston must be home.”
Turning you looked over at them with a smile while slipping on your Nike slides. “He is, and I have to tell him the good news. I’ll be back, sometime,” you yelled while you ran out the front door. It didn’t even take a minute for you to get the Matthews’ house.
A place you new better than your own house. Ema was standing outside the car with a smile on her face. “I was wondering how long it would take for you two to be glued at the hip again.” Your cheeks flushed red and your eyes fell down to the driveway. “He’s inside already, probably trying to clean the mess that he calls a room.”
Giving the women you considered a second mother a warm smile you raced into the house. Passing by cardboard boxes, and family pictures which you were included in you made it to his room. Opening the door to see it was in fact a mess as Ema called it. “Sorry ‘bout the mess, but then again you already knew it would be.”
The truth in his voice made you laugh, and that caused him to turn and look at you with a smile. The special smile that was only held for you and his mom. The two most important women in his life. “So I have some news,” you stated with a cheeky smirk, “and I think you might want to be sitting down for it.”
Auston’s eyebrows raised in confusion before complying, and dropping down on to the bed next to you. “I’m sitting, now what’s this life changing news you have for me? You didn’t get a boyfriend did you?”
Your eyes widened before shaking your head no, “Of course not. I’m more of a hit and quit type girl.” Your laughter mixed with Auston’s deep laugh to bounce off the walls of his room knowing you were joking. “No, but on a more serious note,” you paused trying to regain your proper breathing, “I’m moving to Toronto.”
If it was even possible his smile grew even more. “Wait you mean D/n signed off? I can’t believe this,” Auston cheered jumping up from the bed. In a flash the eighteen year old was crushing you in what he called a hug.
“Aus get off of me,” you laughed, “you’re crushing me!” You could feel Auston’s chest vibrating from above you. “Auston I’m serious, my lungs are collapsing.” He rolled off of the top of you, now laying on his side smiling over at you.
“I can’t believe I get to take you with me Y/n/n,” Auston whispered before pulling you into a proper hug. “My best friend with me every step of the way, no matter what.” You smiled up at Auston never wanting to let go of him, or the friendship you have. “But right now I need you to help me finish packing.”
Rolling your eyes you pushed yourself off of him, “Of course you do.” Auston gave you a cheeky smile before standing to help you pack his things. “Auston Matthews you’d be screwed without me.”
“I think you mean I would be dead without you Y/n/n,” he corrected with a wink.
“You’re gonna be dead because of me if you don’t start helping, that’s what,” you huffed before throwing a pile of his clothes at him. Laughing he stood up from the bed and walked to his closet and began throwing clothes into cardboard boxes. “Never mind, stop helping,” you fussed pushing him away from the box, “go back to being useless.”
His eyes rolled before dropping back to his bed while you folded clothes, “Whatever you want roommate, but I’m not useless and you know that.” Ignoring him completely you continued to work on packing for the second time, but this time it wasn’t even for yourself. Roommates, am I right?
“You mean this is ours?” You asked dumbfound as you stared at the already furnished living room. Even with furniture and some of Auston’s pictures hanging up it looked huge, too big for teenagers to be living in. “Auston this is insane, and must have cost a fortune. I thought we agreed to get furniture when I got here.”
He smiled at you, brown eyes full of trouble. “No I said, we’d get the stuff for your room together. My sisters and mom helped me with this stuff.” And thank god they did, who knew what you would’ve walked into if they didn’t have helped. “So whenever you want we can go get stuff for your room, but I have a surprise for you.”
Your e/c eyes went wide as he said this. “Auston no more surprises, this apartment is surprise enough.” Auston however didn’t listen to your protests, and dragged you to what was your new room. A white door stood in between you and your new safe place, but Auston stopped you before you could go in.
“Close your eyes, and no peeking, I’m serious Y/n/n,” Auston instructed causing a sigh to fall from your lips. Just as an extra measure his large hands covered your eyes making it impossible to peek even though you knew not too. “Okay you can open them in one, two, three!”
When you opened them you saw a light blue wall with pineapple lights hanging around it. In fact the pineapple lights hung around every wall, not just the blue one. That wasn’t the only thing, a picture from the draft was front and center on the light blue wall. “I had Bree help me pick it out, and paint the walls in general. I wanted it to feel like home since we’re so far away.”
Your eyes drifted from the single picture to his brown eyes full to the brim of happiness. “You’ve always had a picture wall, and knew you would want one here so I hope you don’t mind I started it.” Shaking your head you wrapped him up in a hug. “Welcome home Y/n.”
“Welcome home Aus,” you answered before pulling away to open one of the cardboard boxes marked pictures. Then an idea crossed your mind. “Whoever unpacks the most boxes doesn’t have to make dinner tonight,” you stated with a smirk. “Do we have a deal?”
His hand stuck out in front for you to shake, “Oh you’re going down L/n.” If only it was always as simple as stupid little competitions on who had to make dinner, but it never was that easy because that’s life. And for some reason life didn’t like you very much.
“Auston quit staring at those girls, you’re probably freaking them out,” you sassed his attention snapping back to you and the desk you were looking at for your room. “Just because you’re some hot shot now doesn’t mean you can stare at girls like some creep.”
Your best friend smirked over at you, causing the group of girls to whisper amongst themselves. “How is that being a creep Y/n/n?” He asked still looking at them. “They were checking me out first,” he added before turning and giving you his full attention once more.
Sighing you picked up the box the desk was in and put it in your cart which was almost full. “You haven’t even played a game yet bud, you know they’re only in it for the fame and money right? They just want to be able to say ‘I slept with Auston Matthews!’.” The pointed look you gave the Hispanic boy went right over his head as he walked away from you. “Auston you’re not even listening to me,” you scoffed crossing your arms over your chest. Your best friend had just blown you off.
Before he made it to the girls he turned to face you once more, “Oh you’ll need this.” His wallet was thrown at you and your mouth dropped. “I’ll meet you at home later, oh and you’ll need these,” he added before his keys hit you in the face. Flipping him off you turned back towards your cart.
“I can’t believe he just ditched me,” you huffed out loud to yourself. “I don’t even know anyone here and he just left me in the middle of an Ikea. Some best friend you are Auston Matthews.” Storming away from the now growing group you made your way to the front of the store to check out.
After a short walk to the front you were able to get away from the giggle fangirls. You’ve been in Toronto for not even a full day and Auston’s fangirls had already replaced you. The fangirls you didn’t know he had, but hey at least you were the one with his wallet and car keys.
Smirking you walked up to the counter ready to pay not afraid to rack up the money. “Hi all of this please,” you informed the cashier with a sickly sweet smile. With his eyebrows raised he started the task at hand.
“Is all of this on one card, or are you splitting it?” The man proceed to ask his eyes meeting yours.
“Put it all on this one thanks,” you answered handing Auston’s card over with a smile. The Ikea worker looked down at the card then back up at you clearly already knowing who Auston was. “Don’t worry I’m his best friend, he gave me the card.” The look he gave you proved he didn’t believe you at all. Sighing you leaned down on the cart. “Check the cameras if you really want, I came in with him.”
“Then why aren’t you leaving with him?” The cashier was quick to snap back crossing his arms over his chest. Huffing out in frustration you turned to see Auston and his new found friends.
Pointing over at them you spoke, “That’s why,” making the cashier burst out into laughter. “I swear to god I’m his best friend, just please let me buy my stuff and leave. I can get you anything.”
His eyes lit up, “Anything?” you nodded your head with a hopeful smile. “I want his autograph.”
“Deal, I’ll get it to you tomorrow, but can I pay and go now please?” With a quick nod of his head he began to ring you up. Pulling your phone you opened Snapchat to keep you occupied. Your eyes fell to the one Auston had sent you taking priority over the rest. Opening you found it to be a selfie of the girls had had ditched you for.
Rolling your eyes you had to stop yourself from gagging. “I just need you to sign this and you can go.” Your eyes snapped up to see the guy staring at your phone screen. Closing the app out you did as instructed. “Here’s your card and receipt, and I’ll see you and that autograph tomorrow.”
With a tight lipped smile you nodded your head before hurrying out of the store. “Now where the fuck did he park?”
“Hello mom,” you huffed exhausted from setting up your room and putting furniture together. “I’ve been gone for less than forty-eight hours and you’re already calling to see if i wanna come home?” Her gently laugh filled your ears making you smile for the first time since Auston ditched you this morning.
“I wouldn’t say I’m seeing if you wanted to come home, more like checking in. Are you all unpacked?” She questioned as you looked around your room which only had a couple cardboard boxes laying around, along with some tools. Humming as an answer you sat up from your bed waiting for her to continue. “That’s good, but about furniture did you get that all figured out?”
“Yes mom,” you drawled wishing her questioning would stop. Your mood was already horrible because Auston had left you for some girls he doesn’t even know, and now your mother won’t stop asking you questions. “What about you and dad? How has it been without me there?”
It was her turn to sigh, “It’s not easy that’s for sure. I keep thinking you’re just hiding up in your room, or over at the Matthews’. But you’re all the way in Toronto, my baby’s all grown up.”
“Mom,” you whined pushed yourself up from your bed, “I’m not a little girl anymore. And like I told dad nothing will happen to me as long as I’m with Auston. You know that.” She was silent and you could only hope that she wasn’t second guessing her decision to let you go.
“I know, speaking of Auston, where is he? I feel like haven’t talked to him in ages,” she admitted and your stomach dropped hoping she wasn’t asking to talk to him. “Do you think I could talk to him?”
With your mouth hanging open you rushed out of your room to see if he was home yet, but he wasn’t. “I uh - no, you can’t. Sorry mom he’s got getting us lunch,” you lied while staring at the empty Panera bag on the counter.
“Oh I see, well then I’ll let you get back to your unpacking. Talk to you tomorrow?” She asked voice hopeful bringing a smile to your face. Laughing you agreed and hung up the phone call with your mother.
Sighing you were about to turn back and head to your room, only the front door opened followed by loud laughter had you rooted in your place. Your eyes were glued on to the the girl wrapped under Auston’s arm. “Oh Y/n/n, I didn’t think you’d be home,” he stated surprised to see you standing in the middle of your living room. “Uh - this is Madd-”
“Payton,” she cut him with a distasteful look. Your eyebrows rose because man did your best friend know how to pick a girl. “Pleasure to meet you Y/n/n,” she basically spat in your direction.
Faking a smile you nodded, “Yeah sure.” Your attention now turned to Auston who was smiling down at something stupid on his phone. “What happened to helping me set up my room?” You asked genuinely hurt he had backed out of his word with you.
His brown eyes pulled up from the phone screen to meet your e/c ones. “‘M sorry Y/n. but I can still help you if you want.”
Your eyes rolled as you started the short walk back to your room. “Don’t bother helping, I already finished. Have fun with Maddy,” you huffed storming off to your room. From behind the closed door you could hear Payton asking what your deal was.
Maybe it would get better, it would get better. You’d have new friends, classes, and of course you’d have Auston with you. Oh and whatever girl he brought home.

and they were roommates: a series - auston matthews
the teaser
summary: fun or not fun, you’re in for a hell of a ride with Auston as your roommate. let’s just say it’s more fun than not, well hopefully.
“Come on living together would be fun, he said,” you recalled. “Well this isn’t very funny Auston!” You yelled as you walked through your apartment finding clothes that didn’t belong to you. You’d been living in Toronto for a little over a month, just long enough for the name Auston Matthews to spread like wildfire. His name, and reputation.
Huffing in frustration you picked up the tiny undergarment and held it as far away from your body as you could. “Ew, ew, ew, ew,” it kept falling from your lips as you headed back towards your best friends bedroom. Banging your closed fist on the door you waited for an answer.
Already sick of finding out he had a girl back in his room by finding her clothing. You didn’t realize his door had finally swung open, and almost hit said girl in her breast. At least this one had the decency to wrap a blanket around her. “I believe these belong to you.”
The blond stared at you with wide eyes, dumbfounded seeing you stand there before her. “Thank you? You’re not Auston’s girlfriend, are you?” Fear was evident in her tone, but you only broke out into laughter.
“He’s the last person I would want to date sweetheart, enjoy your stay. See you in the morning,” with that you turned on your heels to disappear out of her view. Only the door opened again, and out walked Auston.
The smile that he held for only you was pulling on the corners of his lips, and you couldn’t help but smile at the sight. “Y/n/n wait a sec tomorrow can yo-”
“Make the girl pancakes, some coffee, and let her down easy?” You cut in already knowing the drill. “Don’t worry Aus I have it all covered,” you added with a knowing smile.
“Oh and don’t forge-”
“To do it while you’re at morning skate, yep I know. Been there, done that Aus.” If only you knew how much trouble that would actually get you in.

and they were roommates: a series - auston matthews
This is going to take place leading up to the original story of “and they were roommates” it will include scenes from the original story seeing as it was made up of different parts in time. I don’t know how many parts it will be yet, but somewhere over five I would assume
This series will also include things from the past that we didn’t get to see in “and they were roommates”. Like the story behind the pineapple lights, how Auston and Y/n became best friends, and of course the pictures on the wall.
I hope to have a series teaser out tomorrow, and the first part up by Friday, Saturday at the latest. So please enjoy, and I hope it lived up to what you had envisioned. - vivi

Masterlist
“You land yet?” Was the first thing you heard from the blond Swede. “Because Steph wants you to come meet us for dinner.” Sighing you grabbed the backpack acting as a carry-on before filing out of the plane. “I get it if you don’t want to, Mitch and I tried-”
“-No, no I want to. We just landed, so how about I text you when we get to the hotel,” you offered with a hopeful smile. It had been at least a year since you last saw all of your friends from the Leafs and you couldn’t wait. “I literally just walked off the plane.”
You could practically hear Will nod his head with a goofy smile. “Great, I’ll pick you up there, and we can meet the lovebirds. Oh, and Y/n/n feel free to bring your playbook so we know how to beat you on Saturday night.”
Laughing you rolled your eyes at the forward. “Even if you saw the playbook Willy, you should keep dreaming about winning because you couldn’t get past our defense if you tried.” He was quick to defend himself and his teammates. “Okay hot shot, I gotta go, see you in twenty.”
Sliding your phone into the pocket of your team jacket you looked to your left to see Jordan Greenway. “Flirting with the enemy are we coach?” He asked in a teasing manner.
“I’d watch what I say next if I were you Greenway, I could make you a healthy scratch for the game on Saturday,” you replied with a smug smirk. His smile fell as he stared at you shocked. “I’m only kidding Jordan, there’s no way I’d let that happen with how you’ve been playing.” He was quick to smile in response before jogging to catch up with Charlie and Luke.
Slowly you made your way to the team bus knowing Bruce would be handing you a full scouting report on the Maple Leafs, just like he had for every other team. “See you’re catching on,” his voice called with a cheery smile, “I knew you would, then again you caught on before you even started. You’re a smart kid Y/n.” You smiled widely at the head coach before saying a thank you. “That’s why I’m counting on you to find a way to shut down the Matthews and Tavares lines.”
And then the smile was gone. “Shut them down?” Your voice cracked a little at the game changing task you were given. Last year those two lines had absolute games against Minnesota, each recording three goals. “I - I, how?” The pair of you walked on to the bus the older man still smiling at you.
“The same way you got the team to shut down Crosby and Malkin. You’re hockey IQ is incredible Coach Y/l, you’ll find a way. You always do.” Bruce dropped down into a seat allowing you to take your own. The whole ride to your hotel you were staring down at the points and production for each line on the Leafs, but only one name stood out against the rest: Auston Matthews.
The locker room was full of laughter and normal conversation, a refreshing atmosphere compared to the one of last night. The rematch of the 2018 2019 Eastern Conference Final was one the players would like to forget. Just like that series the Penguins had showed up to win, with the Leafs doing the same, only to fall short once again. One bad bounce off of Auston’s stick landed right on to Crosby’s, and in the back on the net.
Something that the center couldn’t get off his mind, it was on constant repeat. If there was no bad bounce the game would have forced overtime, and maybe they would have won. He was so caught up on that game, that he didn’t even realize that you’re team was in town next, that was until Babcock announced to the team.
“Okay boys, I want you here a little early tomorrow for some film, and then practice after,” the same process the team had heard countless times before. “Morning skate on Saturday to brush up on a few things. Then we got the Wild that night, and let me tell you, with Coach Y/l on their staff it’s not gonna be cake walk.” With that the Canadian coach disappeared back into his office leaving Auston dumbstruck.
Turning to his right he found both Mitch and Will staring at him gauging his reaction. “The Wild?” The Arizona native asked the pair with a head tilt, “Y/n, we play Y/n.”
The two shared a look before turning back to tan skinned male. “You knew this was going to happen at some point Matts, what’s the big deal? You moved on,” Mitch stated with a frustrated look. “So did she.” This caused Auston’s face to fall even more. His brown eyes met Will’s blues ones knowing he could help since he was the only other person that knew the truth.
“She moved on?” Auston then asked hoping no one else heard this conversation but them. A frown had painted the young stars face as he unlaced his skates. It hurt him to hear that you had moved on, even though he knew you didn’t love him. “She has a new boyfriend?” He added praying that Mitch’s answer was no, because he couldn’t bring himself to love anyone other than you.
The brunette shook his head, “No, she doesn’t. What I mean is that she moved on from needing you, and so did you Auston. You’re doing just fine without her.” Was he doing just fine without you? No, he wasn’t. “Now I gotta go, I’m taking Steph out to dinner, but wanna jump on PS4 later?”
“Yeah, yeah sure,” Auston answered looking up from his hands, “have fun at dinner.” He finished getting undressed before turning to the blond, “Do you wanna go get food?” The Swede’s head snapped up from his phone to meet Auston’s gaze and question.
“I, uh, no I can’t,” Will answered stumbling over his words. “I can come over after this thing, and we can talk about - you know.” Both fell silent knowing very well that’s the reason Auston wanted to go out, to try and get his mind off of you. He wanted to talk about what seeing you for the first time since that morning would mean, how much it would hurt him. “I’ll be there Matts okay,” he said with a sad smile, “and we can figure it all out.”
With a nod of his head Auston looked back up to see that William was gone. Sighing he stood up from his stall and disappeared out of the locker room his mind switching from Crosby to you. Of course he knew this was going to happen, he knew you’d end up back in town at some point. Auston just didn’t think it would happen so soon, but he should’ve.
He’d been following the Wild’s success all season long just because that’s where you were. Every press conference, interview, and media scrum you had he watched, or listened to. Auston knew it was stupid, that you wouldn’t care he was proud of you. You made that very clear to him since he walked away, but he couldn’t help but imagine what it would’ve been like it he didn’t break up with you.
You would still be his girl, and Auston couldn’t help but smile thinking about it. He’d be able to make you laugh at his stupid outfits when you were stressing out over a loss, or make you smile when you were crying. All of the little things he pictured himself doing like you had for him. He’d be there for you as much as his schedule allowed, and it made his heart skip a beat thinking about it. And of course he’d tell you he loved you, over and over again. Until you got sick of hearing it.
But then again this was all just a fantasy to Auston, the sound of a car horn pulling him out of his daydream. Making his heart break all over again as that night flashed through his mind. His fell smile and tears clouded his eyes because that was never going to happen as much as he wished it would. It wouldn’t happen because you didn’t love him, at least that’s what he thought.
You couldn’t but smile as you listened to Mitch and Steph bicker over what appetizer to get. This was the first time in months you felt stress free. Sure on off days you weren’t at the rink, but you were always doing something to make sure practice or the next game would run smoothly. But right now you didn’t feel the stress of the media, and expectations you placed on yourself. You felt happy and relieved.
It had been ages since you had seen Steph, Mitch, and Will but god did the wait make it all the more worth it. Sure you talked to the three on a daily basis, but it was different. It was more personal being with them face to face. And you had Steph to thank for that. Your best friend had this all planned since you were announced as the new assistant coach for the Wild. She called it their congratulations dinner to you, even if it was five months late.
“So Y/n/n,” the blond female said with a wide smirk, “got your eye on anybody?” And just like that your smile flattered, but thankfully only Will had noticed. “Well?” Steph pushed for answer something that you just couldn’t give her, and if you did she probably wasn’t going to like it.
When Auston broke up with you of course you were heartbroken, but god for awhile there you thought Steph took it worse than you. She refused to talk to Auston for two weeks, so telling her that you still loved him wasn’t in your cards at the moment even if she was your best friend. In your mind nobody needed to know you loved Auston expect for yourself and him.
Laughing you managed to recover from the blind sided question, “Yeah I have one, and his name is Lord Stanley.” This earned a laugh out of everyone of your friends including yourself. “But in all honesty I’ve been way too busy to worry about trying to find anyone else,” you lied knowing very well you could find somebody if you wanted them, so you smiled and hoped she would buy it. That the two hockey players would buy it.
The smiles on their faces made it seem as if they did, but who really knew. Normally these people would catch you in a lie before it even left your mouth, because they were your best friends. “Well if there’s no guys then let’s get down to business,” Mitch stated his tone becoming more series than before. “Where’s your playbook?”
Laughter spilled from your lips only to come to a complete stop when you saw that Mitch and Will weren’t laughing. “Wait you actually wanted it?” You asked suddenly feeling your heart break, “Because there’s no way I’d give it to you - to anyone.”
Then the laughter came, “We know that Y/n/n, we’re just messing with you.” Nodding your head you were slow to smile, and only did once you saw Steph’s smile shining over at you. That’s how the rest of the dinner went, jokes and playful shots at each others teams.
The dinner ended with a friendly wager and some more chirps before Will drove you back to your hotel. “So Lord Stanley, huh?” Will questioned with his signature smile something you’ve seen countless times tonight.
“Yeah, what’s so wrong with that? I mean he’s always running through your mind right?” You responded nervous to tell him the truth. Maybe he would be okay with it you thought. You for sure knew he’d react better than how Steph would.
“You’re lying,” he sang looking over at you with a smirk. “I saw the way you stopped smiling, and how you hesitated to answer. So who is he?” Now that you weren’t expecting. When you had lied to all of them you figured nobody would have picked up on it, only Will did. He saw the way your smile fell when Steph asked about it, because he was good at picking up on stuff like that. Just like how he knew Auston needed someone to talk to.
Taking a breath you decided if you were going to tell anyone you were happy it’s Will. “You know him actually,” you whispered giving him a small smile, and just like that you thought he was going to die from smiling to much. His head whipped around to stare at you and not the road.
“No, no way. You’re joking right now,” he called his voice loud over the radio, “Y/n, you really don’t mean Auston, do you?”
“I love him Will.” When he heard you say this he couldn’t help but think back to that night, and how heartbroken you had made Auston. He realized you lied to him, and Auston’s tears were all for nothing.
The first thing Willy had heard was the door being pushed open, then the second was a muffled crying. His head whipped around away from Miracle to see Auston’s brown eyes were puffy and red. “S-she doesn’t-” without another word the blond jumped up from the couch and wrapped his friend in a hug. The normally happy and full of energy Swede felt himself break just by looking at his friend.
Will couldn’t help but think this was his fault. He suggested that the twenty-two year old go see you. “She doesn’t love me.” Auston hiccupped. “She doesn’t love me anymore.” And with those five words William Nylander could’ve sworn he felt his heart break.
“What do you mean you love him Y/n?” It was like a switch flipped inside of Will. That suddenly the idea of you and Auston getting back together was a bad thing. Your smile fell when you saw him start to panic almost.
Scoffing almost you narrowed your eyes at one of your best friends. “That I love him William, what less would I mean?” You hissed arms crossing over your chest.
“Then why didn’t you tell him that five months ago Y/n? Do you know how heartbroken he was when he got back?” He questioned at a red light, “How heartbroken he is now?” Your throat went dry. You knew he still loved you, but figured he would get over it. Now you knew you made him feel how you felt.
Shaking your head you turned to face the blond again. “I did.” It was the truth, “I said it back but he never heard me.” Will’s blue eyes glanced to you before pulling up in front of the hotel you were staying at. “You have to believe me Willy,” you whispered almost as if you were begging for forgiveness. He looked away from you making you sigh and getting out of the car.
So much for trying to fix things.
His eyes were glued to you, as you spoke with the crazy Toronto media for the first time. You had put him into some sort of daze, and he couldn’t break it. Auston listened closely to all of the questions asked, and even closer to your answer. Noticed how you spun the charm bracelet when asked a though question, or how your tongue darted out to wet your lips.
Then your e/c eyes met his brown ones, and he could see how stressed you looked. How out of it you looked. Without a second thought he pushed himself away from the wall and made his way towards you. “Do you think your looks helped play a roll in getting hired?”
Auston looked from you to find the reporter who asked it. He was seeing red. “I think that’s the end of this,” he announced stepping to you fully. His arm wrapped around your shoulder as he pulled you to safety from all of the questions. When he finally looked down into your eyes he could see the tears starting to form. “Shh, shh, you’re okay Y/n/n, it’s okay.”
He knew that it seemed strange he was helping you, but after talking with will last night he couldn’t help it. Will had told him you still loved him so he knew he had to take the chance that was given to him.
Your head shook at him trying to step the tears, “I don’t know how to be in this world.” He stayed silent knowing you weren’t done. “Tell me how to be in this world. How to breath in and feel no hurt.” His thumbs brushed away the tears that slipped out of your eyes.
“I will, Y/n I promise,” he whispered hands going to cup your cheeks, “I promise you I’ll show you how too.” He felt as you slowly nodded your head against his palms with a frown painting your face.
“What if you walk away again?” You asked his eyes never leaving yours, “I can’t go through that again Auston. Not when I’m coaching and already stressed out, so please don’t make me go through that again.” The way you begged him made his heart break all over again.
Shaking his head he gave a small sad smile. “You won’t, because this time I know you’re more important Y/n.” His confession got a smile out of you, “I love you Coach Y/n L/n, but I’m sorry to say you’re gonna have to lose tonight.”
With the tears finally stopping and a smirk working its way on to your face you gained your confidence back once more. “So you think Matthews,” you teased, “only there’s a new coach in town and from what I hear she doesn’t take no as an answer.” His smile flattered a bit, “But don’t worry I won’t love you any less tomorrow just because I beat you.”
His laugh rang throughout the area as did yours causing both Mitch and Will to look at the pair. Their smiles found their way to their own faces as they saw the two of you slowly working your way towards what you used to be. “You see Coach L/n, the thing is you have to shut me down before you win.”
“What like its hard?” You asked pulling away from him. He watched as you started to walk back towards the Wild team, only to turn and through a smirk over your shoulder. “You’re going down Matthews.”
“I wouldn’t have it any other way L/n,” Auston called after you his smile growing even wider because not only did he have you back, but he knew you weren’t going anywhere this time.
