Hey friends! We've had a flurry of really excellent magical school books over the last five years or so that I have absolutely loved. I want to write a magical school story of my own soon, so I studied these books: what do they have in common? What are they doing differently from each other? How are they similar to older magical school books? How are they bringing a new twist to the subgenre?
Turns out I had a lot to say on the subject, and so I give you a blog post! Enjoy!

All These Worlds (Bobiverse #3) by Dennis E. Taylor
Triloģijas noslēdzošajam krājumam turpinot tik daudz iesāktas stāsta līnijas no pirmajām divām sērijas grāmatām kopējais iespaids likās drusku par daudz saskaldīts. Gala rezultātā katrs no atsevišķajiem sižetiem tā vien šķiet aptausta vien potenciālu stāsta virsslāni, kas piedāvā vien kaut ko…

Don't know how many of you already have it, but here is a link to listen to free audiobooks just in case (legally! Amazon is letting people listen to audiobooks for free legally!)
https://stories.audible.com/start-listen
Because reality has been sad, I've been listening to some of the more childish stories. Zero G and its sequel Dragon Planet are both good stories! With science in them, but not hard science! Science fiction adventure, with an innocent little 11-12 year old boy as the main character, who eventually makes friends with a space pirate. My sister says that The Mystwick School of Musicraft is good too!
Be free and listen to stories (and maybe reblog this, in case someone else might want the link).

Ah! So many questions! Alright, @abookishhobbit, here we go.
An Ember in the Ashes (by Sabaa Tahir) is a light fantasy/romance novel about a slave girl and a trained assassin. I'll get to my rant in a minute, because things sould be in order.
The Forbidden Wish (by Jessica Khoury) is another fantasy/romance I stumbled on (I wasn't aiming for romance this week, I swear) which I found when looking for one of Khoury's other books, The Mystwick School of Musicraft, which has very fun characters and strong worldbuilding. Sort of a collision between a Ben Aaronovitch-style urban fantasy and Harry Potter's soft magic system. Anyway, The Forbidden Wish is basically a "what if Aladdin's genie was a girl" romantic reimagining. Well done so far, but I'm not even a full chapter in.
Finally, Firebringer (by David Clement-Davies) is a talking animal story, something like Watership Down, only about deer in ancient Scotland. It's got prophesies and adventures and reunions and teenage angst. It's great. I reread it every couple years.
The Rant
Tumblr media
I have a major problem with An Ember in the Ashes, and it's mostly in the characterization of the various players on the board. An intelligent girl that can't follow simple directions (like "keep your eyes down"). A rebellion that sends an untrained youngling to spy for them, then get upset when said youngling doesn't magically do well. A hardened, ruthless assassin who's haunted by killing and hates mistreating people, but also can't conceive of winning this contest to be emperor and changing things.
It's just... painful to read, honestly.
I want to rewrite the whole bloody thing, starting with the premise that the characters actually are the way they're described, rather than acting in completely different ways to enhance the "romantic tension" or whatever.
The worldbuilding is decent and the plot has promise. I want to see this story get the love it deserves.

So tomorrow (well, techinically today, becaue 12:30 am) is Readathon, and I’m lucky enough to not be working this time around! Here’s what I’m hoping to get through:
~Finish Spark of the Resistance (currently at 45%) ~Read Be More Leia  ~Read Choose Your Destiny: A Finn & Poe Adventure ~Finish Death Star Owner's Manual ~Catch up on canon comics (9 miscellaneous issues) ~Read as much of The Crystal Star as possible (currently at 39%) ~If I finish that, start The Black Fleet Crisis: Before the Storm ~When my eyes get tired, I have the Captain Marvel: Higher, Further, Faster audiobook (and if I finish the last three and half hours of that, a freebie I picked up called The Mystwick School of Musicraft) ~If, heaven forbid, I should need a break from Star Wars, I’ll probably finally get to Descendants School of Secrets: Carlos’s Scavenger Hunt and/or The Backstagers and the Final Blackout
Yay Readathon!! Here’s hoping I stick out way more of this one than I have the last few. I should’ve gone to bed earlier. =(

Listened to the audiobook of “The Mystwick School of Musicraft.” It’s free this month on Audible. The background music really helped, but it’s a very fun story on its own merits.

Book Review - The Mystwick School of Musicraft by Jessica Khoury
Book Review – The Mystwick School of Musicraft by Jessica Khoury
⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 3 out of 5. I come from a pretty musical family. My parents are both great singers and my sisters and I all played instruments at school. I initially tried out the oboe but couldn’t cope with the double reed. I then moved to the flute and, after a lot of effort, became pretty adequate. So, it was a given that I’d be interested in a book that a magical musical school with a flautist…

So enthralled with @authorjess #mystwickschoolofmusicraft which has a delightful premise. We are a music 🎶 focused family with my son in bands and orchestras and I love to sing so it’s easy to picture music carrying you away to an amazing experience. Great #mglit #kidlit❤️. . The book: Amelia Jones always dreamed of attending the Mystwick School of Musicraft, where the world’s most promising musicians learn to create magic. So when Amelia botches her audition, she thinks her dream has met an abrupt and humiliating end—until the school agrees to give her a trial period. Amelia is determined to prove herself, vowing to do whatever it takes to become the perfect musician. Even if it means pretending to be someone she isn’t. Meanwhile, a mysterious storm is brewing that no one, not even the maestros at Mystwick, is prepared to contain. Can Amelia find the courage to be true to herself in time to save her beloved school from certain destruction? #magicalmusic #aladdinbooksforkids # #bookphoto #booknerdigan #prettybooks #bookaesthetic #biblio #bibliophiles #bibliolife #bookworms #bookinstagram #booksofinsta #readersofig #readersofinsta #igreaders #bookishlove #bookhoarder #bookcommunity #fantasybooks #fantasylit #bookstagram #bookaddict #booksinthewild #middlegradebooks #middlegrade (at McCall, Idaho) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQqVpyyr67E/?utm_medium=tumblr

Keeping Happy
So I had a bit of “lock down blues” recently and I am certain I am not the only one who has had this! As an adult I can self-manage and recognise when I am feeling a bit low so I find things to do to cheer up - walk the dog, paint, read, watch TV, exercise...
This got me thinking about ways that the children can cheer themselves up in those moments of feeling overwhelmed.
Below is a link to David Walliams reading his book, The World’s Worst Children which is guaranteed a giggle.
https://soundcloud.com/harpercollinspublishers/the-worlds-worst-children-2-1/s-R3NzEPl8vhB
I had a little browse of audible this morning (all free at the moment) and a few recommended listens:
The Mystwick School of Musicraft - modern and magical!
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland -  a classic with amazing background music.
The Terrible Two - giving me the same humour as Horrid Henry.
YouTube can be a blessing when it is guided and time limited - a quick fix for me when I am feeling a bit down is to look up funny/ cute animal videos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9OMAX91oyw
My class know I LOVE to get them up and moving, here are our favourites!
The Dinosaur Stomp: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Imhi98dHa5w
Just Dance Ghostbusters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izMJDiHQBH0
Inspired by the riddles going around on Twitter, this is certainly a distraction to get your brain working:

My class are HUGE fans of jigsaw puzzles - if you have them at home ready then great, if not here is a link to some they can do online:

Kindness post it notes
We do this weekly in class. Children spend time writing kind words to one another and we place them in a basket and read them aloud at the end of the week. This could be modified in many ways. They could write kind words about members of the family, write the things they are grateful for, write what made them happy today...the list is endless and is a great way to get the whole family involved.
Have a look at my previous blog about activity ideas as many of them will also help!
If you have any other ideas please let me know on twitter.

📚 BOOK REVIEW: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝘆𝘀𝘁𝘄𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁 by Jessica Khoury . 💌 My Rating: ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️/5 . ✏️ My Review: Middle-grade books are the best remedy for any reading slump. I have been reading a lot of thrillers and historical novels lately and I needed something light and exciting. The Mystwick School of Musicraft was exactly that and more. It is the story of Amelia, a twelve-year-old, who has dreamt all her life to attend the Mystwick School of Musicraft just like her mother did. Amelia lost her mother when she was four years old and was raised by her grandmother. Through unusual events, Amelia is accepted in the school, but she will have to prove that she belongs there. She will face many obstacles from her teachers, her peers, and even a ghost. Does Amelia have what it takes to stay at Mystwick or will she fail? . This book is compared to the Harry Potter Series. I have not read HP and if it is as good as this book is, I am now tempted to give it a try. If you like magic and adventures, this book delivers exactly that. This is a fantastic start for this new series. . 🙋🏼‍♀️ Thank you RainCoast Books and HMH Books for Young Readers for sending me an ARC of this magical novel. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝘆𝘀𝘁𝘄𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁 by Jessica Khoury will be available at your favourite bookstore on January 21, 2020. . ☕ QOTD: What’s your favorite way to waste time? . . #poodles #poodlestagram #poodlesofinstagram #furbabies #dogsofinstagram #bookstagram #dogsandbooks #bookishlife #bookishlove #bookstagrammer #book #books #booklover #bookish #bookaholic #reading #readersofinstagram #instaread #ilovebooks #bookishcanadians #canadianbookstagram #bookreviewer #bookcommunity #bibliophile #bookphotography #themystwickschoolofmusicraft #jessicakhoury #bookreview #middlegrade #fantasy https://www.instagram.com/p/B7Qc4tEgUiO/?igshid=106uxggszvnyc
