A brief snippet of Mystrade dialogue that came to me that doesn't fit with anything I'm working on:

"Now that we're married, Myc, don't you think I should know what you actually do?"

"But you do know, my dear. I analyze governmental decisions and recommend the most prudent course of action."

"So you're not... a spymaster? Kingmaker?"

"Good Lord, no. Why would you think that?"

"Well, back in the day, Sherlock said..."

"My drama queen brother? The one who wears a coat everywhere because it's the closest he can get to a cape? Who threatens to perish weekly out of boredom?"

"Now that you point that out..."

Time

Mycroft studied his reflection in the mirror with a careful eye.

He tugged at the waistcoat of his morning suit, shot his cuffs, flicked non-existent dust from the shoulders, and adjusted his tie a millimeter to the right for the fifth time.

He sighed and turned away to pace the small room once more. Back and forth and back and forth, over and over, trying and failing to still his frenzied mind.

A knock at the door froze him in his tracks.

"Mycroft? It's time."

The door opened with a slight creak to admit his brother and Best Man.

Sherlock looked him over briefly as he stepped near and tutted, reaching up to shift Mycroft's tie one millimeter to the left.

Mycroft raised an eyebrow and sighed inwardly but accepted the adjustment.

Sherlock then produced an elegant boutonniere of white heather from his pocket and pinned it to the lapel of Mycroft's jacket.

They stood silently for a long moment, regarding each other, then Sherlock meaningfully cleared his throat.

"Aside from my John, Lestrade is the best man I know. You are very lucky, brother mine."

Since Mycroft agreed wholeheartedly with this statement, he made no comment. Indeed, he would not have been able to force any words past the sudden lump in his throat.

The urge to face the mirror again and scrutinize his appearance was almost overwhelming, but before he could move away, he felt his brother's hand on his shoulder, squeezing tightly.

"And so is he."

His mind came to an abrupt halt, stunned into stillness.

He then pulled his brother into a fierce hug, and was warmed down to his bones when he felt the embrace returned.

"Alright, enough sentiment," Sherlock mock-grumbled, stepping away. "Come now, you can't be late for your own wedding."

Mycroft felt the tension drain from his shoulders and his eyes beamed with gratitude.

He tugged one final time at his waistcoat and gestured at the door. "Lead the way, brother mine."

Pride - May Prompts (31)

John weaves through the crowd, a sweating bottle of water in each hand. The day is bright and cloudless and absolutely boiling. He swipes the back of his wrist over the sheen on his brow and spots the top of Sherlock’s head, half-hidden behind a couple stood together across the street. 

That looks like…oh my god—

He hurries over. He wasn’t in bomb disposal, but across the years he’s gained plenty of practice of a similar sort. 

Sherlock’s face inhabits an expression completely new. It’s remarkable. 

And that’s not the least of it.

Mycroft is wearing a vest. 

And shorts.

“Alright, mate?” Lestrade greets John amiably. “This one could use a look-over,” he adds with a wink in Sherlock’s direction. “Might need to restart his heart.”

Mycroft is as pink and pinched as a summer prawn with a smear of suncream on his nose. “Hello, John. We were just—chatting.”

John grins. “You’ve short-circuited him.” He holds out a bottle for Sherlock, then cracks the seal on his own. “Nice togs. First time at Pride, you two?”

“Why are you here?” Sherlock pipes up, eyes narrowed in suspicion at his eternal foe.

“Isn’t it obvious, little brother?”

“Spying on us?”

“Hardly.”

“…Sentiment.”

“The word you’re looking for,” Mycroft lifts his chin, confident as John has ever seen him, “is love.”

They had been meeting for months by now, maybe five or six since they had met. As usual Greg had come out of the yard intending to go home when a black sedan had parked in front of him. He wanted to groan, it had been a particulary tiring day followed by a dreadful murder in which Sherlock had reminded all of them how incompetent they were. He got into the car which took him to a secret location.

-Wanna go out sometime? I’m getting tired of meeting you in this damn place- Irritation clear in his face.

Working on a longer project, I'm taking advantage of my little ficlets to get to grasp the characters who will be part of the story.

You've already met Greg’s little sister in other of my little stories, but she didn't have a name, now she does. Meet Abigail, aka Abby or Abs.

She's the mother of little Lisa, whom you met a short while ago.

"Gregory Lestrade, open this door right now!"

Greg, asleep on the sofa, was startled awake by his sister's voice as she banged on the door.

A little dazed, he got up from the sofa and went to open the door. As soon as it opened, his sister threw herself at him and hugged him.

"How could you do this to me?! I heard on the news that you almost died in the hostage situation this afternoon. You could have at least called me!"

She hugged him again and when she pulled away she looked at him worriedly and asked, "Are you okay?"

Greg smiled and nodded, "I'm okay, very okay considering the circumstances."

It was then that Mycroft's head appeared over the sofa and he asked in a sleepy voice, "Greg, who are you talking to?"

Greg looked over his shoulder, "My sister, everything's fine. She was worried about what happened this afternoon."

Mycroft replied from the sofa as he stood up, "You mean when you couldn't think of anything better to do than put yourself in danger?"

Greg shrugged and turned to his sister who was smiling as she winked, "Oh, I see, I see what you mean now. I can see for myself that you're doing quite well under the circumstances."

Mycroft had come close to them and Greg's sister needed no other confirmation than the way the two men looked at each other to understand the situation.

Mycroft held out his hand to her, "Mycroft Holmes."

The younger woman shook it firmly, "Abby, the sister of that ruthless man. Pleased to meet you. Glad to finally make your acquaintance after hearing a lot about you."

"Abby!" Interrupting his lover, Mycroft replied quietly, "Certain circumstances sometimes favor... getting closer. Such was the case today." 

He slipped his arm around Greg's waist, and Abby couldn't help but notice the way Greg leaned against him.

She smiled, then approached Mycroft and whispered, "I don't need to tell you that if you hurt him, it won't take ten men to find your parts."

Mycroft replied seriously, "Noted, ma'am," then turning to Greg, he added, "You were right, she is terrifying."

He turned to her and said gently, "Thank you for entrusting me with your brother. I'll take good care of him. I'm just sorry you had to find out this way."

Abby shook her head and replied, "Well, that's the second biggest news I've heard all day, and it's a lot better than the first, when I found out my brother had taken a bullet."

She didn't miss Mycroft's arm wrapped protectively around Greg's waist and when she saw that, she couldn't help but smile fondly.

She leaned over and planted a light kiss on her brother's cheek as she whispered, "I'm happy for you." 

Then she did the same to Mycroft and added, stepping aside, "Well, boys, I'll leave you to it. You have to come over for dinner sometime." 

Without waiting for an answer, she left as quickly as she had come.

Mycroft and Greg looked at each other, chuckled quietly, and then Greg asked softly, "What do we do now?"

Mycroft replied, "Why don't we go back to what we were doing before we fell asleep?"

Greg, looking falsely confused, asked, "What were we doing? I can't remember."

Mycroft wrapped his arms around Greg's neck and, bringing his lips to his, whispered against them, "Let me refresh your memory." 

Then he pressed his lips to his lover's and it didn't take long for Greg to remember.

There Is, In Fact, Mistletoe - Christmas moment!  10k.  Written for the 2022 Mystrade Holiday Collection.  Greg’s got a big family and it’s time for Mycroft to meet all of them.  Silly little kids and funny football games galore.  And, of course, a bit of mistletoe.  Rating: G.

No Fear of Shadows - 6k.  Established relationship fic in which Greg attends his first political event with Mycroft.  Rating: G.

Rugged - Febuwhump Day 5: “That’s gonna scar.”  Ficlet (500 words).  Greg gets slashed pretty bad in a fight and is sad about his new scar.  He worries that he’s going to look ugly, old, and feeble.  Mycroft, however, has a different opinion.  No graphic violence.

Blessing

At the inauspicious hour of 3:33 am on a wet and blustery Sunday morning, Greg and Mycroft were woken by the call they had been waiting 40 long weeks to receive.

Their surrogate had gone into labor and was presently being whisked by a security detail to a private and secure birthing facility.

The men shared a look of shock that melted into pure exhilaration as they scrambled out of bed to throw on clothing and grab the go bags that have been waiting by the door for the past month. A sleek black car met them as they raced out of the house.

14 hours later they were presented with the most exquisite creature that ever drew breath, wrapped in a pale pink blanket.

Madeline Elizabeth Lestrade-Holmes lay cradled in her daddy Greg's arms, suckling from a bottle of freshly expressed breast milk, her tiny brow wrinkled and furrowed in what could best be described as extreme annoyance.

Greg was enchanted. He could not take his eyes off her. She was perfect in every way, from the fluff of brown curls on her head to the minuscule nails on her tiny toes.

He had not heard Mycroft ask if he wanted coffee, had not felt the kiss pressed to his temple and had no idea his husband had left the room. He was utterly absorbed in the way a small pink hand was gripping his thumb.

It was true Mycroft needed coffee, and indeed Anthea was on her way back from a nearby coffee shop with something fresh and infinitely more palatable what they served in the cafeteria, but the real reason he had left his husband and daughter's side was he desperately needed a moment.

He needed a moment to collect his thoughts. He needed a moment to catch his breath.

He needed a moment to try and keep the fullness of his heart from flowing out of his eyes.

He had thought he'd known love, thought he'd known fear; he'd thought his life complete the day he married Gregory.

The moment the nurse had placed that baby girl in his arms, he'd felt all of those things to a degree he never thought possible. Barely six minutes old and already the bright center of his universe.

To see Gregory holding her, so blissfully absorbed in her every movement was precious beyond words. His precious family.

Mycroft was just about to turn around and return to their room when he spotted the open door of the hospital chapel. After a moment's hesitation he walked inside.

The room was dimly lit by tasteful sconces along the walls. Three pews sat in front of a modest altar, back-lit by a large stained glass panel depicting a white dove against a blue sky.

Mycroft had never believed in God, and he didn't now, but he could only close his eyes and whisper a heartfelt "Thank you" to whomever may be listening for this blessed day.

Hello and thanks for the ask! I am thrilled that you're going to watch Sandman. :-D Obviously I highly recommend it.

3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?

I got asked this twice, which gives me the opportunity to give two answers! For you, to further tease the Sandman stuff, I'll say it's The Century Gentleman. This is a straight up post-canon getting together story, which isn't usually what I write and I'm proud that I feel like I pulled it off pretty well. This didn't get quite as much attention as some of my other Sandman work. Two reasons for that are that it was too long for me to post on tumblr and because a lot of people have written straight up post-canon getting together stories for this pairing, and a lot of those people are much better writers than me. I'm more than happy to dwell in my weird, fluffy, not-having-much-to-do-with-canon lane, but I was also proud of this one.

29. Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?

Oof, I've written a lot that I've liked this year, but we'll stick with this line from the Century Gentleman, since I do feel like it is a banger:

“You’ve given me an eternity,” Hob murmured, “and all I want from it is more time with you.”

30. Biggest surprise while writing this year?

The realities of writing for big new fandoms! I posted my first fic on AO3 in December 2020 and for most of 2021 I was writing Mystrade (Mycroft Holmes/Greg Lestrade) fics in the Sherlock fandom. The Mystrade fandom is a fantastic group of people who gave me the kindest welcome to online fandom I ever could have asked for and they are a passionate and devoted group, but there's not a ton of people who are active. The other fandom I wrote for in 2021 was Person of Interest, which again has a small community of very lovely people, some of whom I am privileged to consider friends now. But in 2022 I watched and started writing fic for Arcane which had just come out in late 2021, and I latched on to the same pairing that a LOT of others did. The stats on my stories blew me out of the water. A whole bunch of people started following me on here! It was wild. And then I watched Sandman literally the day it aired and started writing for it and again the stats knocked my socks off. Now I'm writing these silly little non-romantic ficlets and lots of people are reading them and enjoying them and following me on tumblr? It's been a shock in the best way possible. I'm really glad I've had both the small intimate fandom experience and the big new fandom experience. But I'm extra glad I had the small fandoms first so that I can appreciate the difference.
