My full Zatanna Bring Down The House Review!
(spoiler filled, you have been warned!)
First of all I really enjoyed it, it is a very good characterization of Zatanna. We see her heroism and her innate desire to help people, even strangers, and people she doesn’t trust. Helping the magic users, and seeing her desire to do what’s right. She was determined and doesn’t hesitate to help, just like the hero she is.
She had a dry sense of humor, a showman personality and love of performing, her stubborn will and her temper as well. These are all traits that I have seen and consider to be consistent in Zee over the years. So seeing them be core to her in this book was very much appreciated.
I do have a couple narrative nitpicks, 1) she’s never killed anyone, ever. So the decision to have her accidentally kill a kid in the story was a shame to me. I don’t like the breaking of that 60 year record. My only comfort is that it technically isn’t canon. So technically her record is still intact.
2) is the casters doing logomancy. I think that should be something only Zataras can do. It’s such a unique style of spellcasting, and having other magic users be able to do it sort’ve undermines this unique concept. The original reason the Zataras spoke backwards was because they were descendants of Da Vinci. So others should find it extremely difficult to do if they can do it at all.
I’ve mixed opinions about the casters & bunnies in general. They remind me of the Homo Magi, And I couldn’t help but feel that making Zatara part of a secret magic group was just taking from Sindella’s origin. Which has already happened by making Zatara a Homo Magi, I think the casters easily could’ve been swapped for the Homo Magi. But they were interesting, warring factions of magic is always a fun concept.
One problem I have, that isn’t exclusive to this book, was having her not use magic much until the end. It’s very common for magic users to have this trope of powerlessness. Especially at the start of a hero’s journey. So, I recognize the story format but I’m tired of seeing it.
We’ve now have had 6 stories follow a similar route (7 soldiers, come together, Mystik U, Jewel of gravesend, mystery of the meanest teacher) also absolute power, and technically both JLD runs also begin similarly. Seeing Zatanna constantly at square one no longer serves her character, her story, and discards her history. We should move past stories centered on her not using magic and start moving on to stories of her being a fully realized sorceress.
My final big problem with the story is constantine’s inclusion. I’ve made posts on other platforms about how poorly he treats her and will eventually post one here. But in Bring Down The House he is once again made a part of her origin and revealed to be manipulating things behind the scenes, keeping secrets from her, and even lying to her because he knows better and is trying to “keep her safe.” It’s just an example of sexist tropes like him manipulating and infantilizing her. Which I am also sick of seeing.
That all being said the conclusion is the crown jewel of the story. It’s immensely satisfying. We got to see her transfiguring an army of demons easily. A powerful ability in her tool kit that I feel isn’t utilized as much as it used to be. The bunnies as allies was also fun, and having magical bunnies as allies and a part of her show is a fun and whimsical addition to her lore that I’ve wanted to see.
It was dare I say almost worth the typical and repetitive hero’s journey. While the decision to make Zatara the villain of this story was interesting, albeit not one I would have made. His defeat was wonderful and spectacular. It was emotional, impactful and bad ass. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Finally, it must be said and cannot be understated how beautiful the art was. It was colorful, whimsical, and just perfect for her story. It wove with the narrative seamlessly. I loved the artwork in this book. Truly blew me away.
So even though I have my criticisms and nitpicks, it was still a really fun and beautiful read, with a perfect ending. I wish the series was an ongoing, or led to a solo title for her because reading this showed how fun her story could be. All in all to me it was a 4/5.
Thank you for reading
Eht dne!

I’m trying to give more minis and limited runs a try this year, what are some that you count as must-reads? 💖💖💖
hiiiiiiiiiii <333
you've come to the right place, THE HOME OF THE OBSCURE MINISERIES. okay, let's do this!
set in the dcu/vertigo
martian manhunter: american secrets (1992) - three issue miniseries exploring j'onn's early years on earth and his status as a literal alien relating to 50s/60s counterculture, the ufo craze and various conspiracy theories of the era. good art, great writing -- it's opening paragraph and sometimes-tagline ("strangers to each other, we were both greater strangers to the hordes of new york. he was a beatnik. i was a martian.") plays in my mind every so often and tells you a great deal about the tone we're playing with here!
arkham city: the order of the world (2021) - six issue miniseries. you'll rarely see a modern recommendation from me, let alone a batman-related one, but i feel like this little book sort of slipped through the cracks when it came out and it's more than worth reading for the sublime art alone. horror miniseries following one doctor's attempts at rounding up some of arkham's less conventional escapees.
mystik u (2017) - three issue miniseries. while not strictly set in the actual canon dc universe, it's an uproariously fun book about a young zatanna's days at a school for magic users and it's got some great great characterisation for the likes of, say, mister e & the trenchcoat brigade that we haven't seen in decades and decades. which speaking of,
mister e (1991) - four issue miniseries. this is one i rec pretty often on here but if anything fits the actual definition of a must-read for me, then it's this mister e solo book. ostensibly a sequel to the books of magic (1990), which is another go-to recommendation, this is a little horror tale of abuse and trauma and deeply repressed sexuality among a surreal attempt to take charge of one's own destiny. tw for child abuse (i can be more specific in a dm!)
hawkworld (1989) - three issue miniseries. this is the post-crisis origin of the thanagarian hawks, with a specific focus on katar hol's evolution from policeman to vigilante and all the ideals betrayed in-between.
vigilante: city lights, prairie justice (1995) - four issue miniseries. another sincere & legitimate must read! this is classic james robinson, blending westerns with noir and the golden age of comics, and it follows greg saunder's short-lived hollywood years and the insane revenge quest that consumes him. one of the very best books i've ever read, with astounding art too!
challengers of the unknown (1991) - eight issue miniseries. who doesn't love washed up heroes living off their own merchandise and fame until tragedy forces them back into the people they've forgotten how to be? a compelling look at some of the few heroes that have been allowed to age not to gracefully, and then their quest to find themselves again. tim sale's art is hit or miss for me but this is a definite hit!
superman/doomsday: hunter/prey (1994) - three issue miniseries set immediately after clark's return to life, featuring doomsday's unexpectedly tragic origin. i'm rarely a superman fan but i adored this one and in fact own the trade.
jonni thunder (1985) - four issue miniseries. a female private investigator with all the trappings of the archetypical noir detective and johnny thunder's powers. there's really not much else i can say!
sugar & spike: metahuman investigations (2016) - originally appearing in the backups of legends of tomorrow (2016) #1-6, this keith giffen/bilquis evely humor book sees grown up versions of sheldon mayer's world-famous sugar & spike dealing with all the unpleasant, better-forgotten, just plain weird embarrassments of the world's most famous heroes. their first case is finding batman's rainbow batsuits before their existence is leaked to the general public!
adam strange (1990) - three issue miniseries. legitimately an all time favourite book based on the kubert brothers' art alone, we follow adam strange's last night on earth before he's set to move to rann permanently and all the regrets that come with it. the definitive adam strange portrayal, and a magnificently written one at that!
standalone
nathaniel dusk (1985)/nathaniel dusk ii (1986) - four issue miniseries. if this isn't a must-read then i don't know what is! i mentioned this one in my 'comix of the year' round-up so i'll just go ahead and copy paste what i said there: "the quintessential film noir, in comic book form. gene colan's art makes the miniseries but dusk is a truly unique outing no matter how you look at it, and its status as ostensibly set in the real post-wwi world makes it all that more fascinating. nathaniel dusk is a hardboiled detective whose career is marred by too-personal tragedy, the book's custom made for anybody who's as big on character studies and character-driven pieces as i am".
cinder & ashe (1988) - four issue miniseries. again from my round-up: "at its heart, this is a story about the vietnam war but also a harrowing mystery thriller set in new orleans and an exploration of racism, the military industrial complex, and two lives consumed by grief." there's not much i can say that won't spoil it but trust me, there's a reason it's one of my favourite books!
wild dog (1987) - four issue miniseries. the book follows mysterious vigilante wild dog, who takes to the streets with a baseball bat and single-minded determination in an attempt to put an end to the crime wave that had cost him the life of his girlfriend. it's a fun, action-packed miniseries that keeps you guessing the whole time and doesn't reveal wild dog's identity until the very last issue!
jonny double (1998) - four issue miniseries. down on his luck private investigator is hired to plan out the perfect heist, and it only gets better from there! a solidly fun, sincerely fantastic book with some great art from eduardo risso and extremely clever writing. some gaycoding thrown in for flavour, too.
slash maraud (1987) - six issue miniseries. a sci-fi/dystopian story, we follow slash maraud and a gang of lesbian bikers as they try to avert the incoming apocalypse on an a lawless earth where humanity's only got five years left to live. exactly as fun as it sounds!
tempus fugitive (1990) - four issue miniseries. a freedom fighter from the far future travels across time in an attempt to change his present. a recent read but a thoroughly enjoyable one.
there's a lot i'm missing, and i mean a whole lot, so i suggest taking a look at my completed series list and seeing if anything jumps out (for example, you've simply got to read wrath of the spectre!) but this is what came to mind just now! hope it helps a little bit!

There’s nothing like a good collaboration with mcs that really gets the fans excited
There are some posse cuts that are undeniable.
We all know "The Symphony" and "Buddy." And who doesn't love the star-making turn Nas gave us on "Live At the BBQ" or Busta's scene-stealing verse from "Scenario?" And there are posse cuts that may not be as inescapable as those tracks, but are just as noteworthy. The one-upmanship of "Don't Curse." The camaraderie of "Watch For The Hook." So many others that deserve way more love that don't get discussed as much as the go-to tracks.
But what is a posse cut? In this day and age of constant collaboration, the thought of several emcees hopping on a track together may seem routine. But a posse cut is when a corp of rappers team up and take turns showcasing their skills on the mic. For the purposes of this list, we're gonna stick to songs that feature at least four emcees (sorry "I Wanna Be Down" remix) and couldn't be group cuts like "Triumph" by Wu-Tang Clan.
But here are songs that we think you might wanna check out, if you love hearing emcees bringing out the best in each other over a dope track.
#26
"VIBIN'" (REMIX) - BOYZ II MEN FEAT. CRAIG MACK, TREACH, BUSTA RHYMES, METHOD MAN [BONUS SONG]
Our BONUS SONG is a celebrated guest spot! Or in this case--four emcees taking over for the harmonizing Philly quartet.
#25
"DA LADIES IN THE HOUSE" - BIG KAP FEAT. U-NEEK, PRECISE, LAURYN HILL, BAHAMADIA
This track from Big Kap may have had quite the on-the-nose title (and very 90s spelling: "Da?"), but it's one of the most underrated posse cuts of all time. Shout-out to Precise and Uneek, Bahamadia and the one they call "L," who shows up and shows out in this early (Pre-THE SCORE, that is) appearance.
#24
"DUSTED N DISGUSTED" - E-40 FEAT. MAC MALL, 2PAC, SPICE-1
Everyone came with heat, and in the video they held it down for 2Pac, who was incarcerated. The Bay Area represented to the fullest on this classic from 40 Fonzarelli.
#23
"1 TRAIN" - A$AP ROCKY FEAT. BIG K.R.I.T., YELAWOLF, DANNY BROWN, KENDRICK LAMAR, ACTION BRONSON
An impressive lineup of 2010s emcees go bar-for-bar on this banger from LONG.LIVE.A$AP. Hit-Boy produced this track with the intention of capturing a 1990s East Coast underground feel. Mission accomplished.

#22
"GOT MY MIND MADE UP" - 2PAC FEAT. THA DOGG POUND, METHOD MAN, REDMAN
A great lyrical showcase that debunks the East-vs-West mythology of 1996; this is lyricism at it's finest. And 2Pac quotes Run-D.M.C. and Rakim for good measure, just to remind everyone he was as Hip-Hop as anyone.
#21
"SYMPHONY 2000" - EPMD FEAT. REDMAN, METHOD MAN, LADY LUCK
We could not talk about great posse cuts that deserve more love and not mention this heat rock from the Def Squad/Hit Squad crew. Everybody snaps the fuck out on this track. And it'll make you wish we heard way more from Lady Luck.
#20
"WATCH FOR THE HOOK" - COOL BREEZE FEAT. OUTKAST, WITCHDOCTOR, GOODIE MOB
The Dungeon Family was at the peak of its powers when Witchdoctor, the members of Goodie Mob and OutKast teamed up with Cool Breeze for this anthem. Highlighting a handful of the greatest emcees in Atlanta rap history, it helped solidify the talent throughout the crew and still has one of the coolest videos of the 1990s.
#19
"24 HRS TO LIVE" - MA$E FEAT. DMX, BLACK ROB, THE LOX
Ma$e became one of the biggest rap stars of the late 1990s on the strength of slick pop hits, but this classic was one of the grimier moments on the multiplatinum-selling Harlem World and features a star-making appearance from Dark Man X.
#18
"MAKE 'EM SAY UGH" - MASTER P FEAT. FIEND, MYSTIKAL, SILKK THE SHOCKER, MIA X
New Orleans rap stormed the mainstream in 1997, and this anthem from Master P's GHETTO D album was the rallying call. No Limit smashed through and showcased some of the brightest stars on the label, with Mia X, Fiend and Mystikal ripping the track to shreds.
#17
"JOHN BLAZE" - FAT JOE FEAT. NAS, RAEKWON, BIG PUN, JADAKISS
You can feel the respect in the room. These are all emcees who hold each other in the highest esteem and they bring the best out of each other here. Pure late 1990s Mafioso rap greatness, all on one track.
#16
"STRANDED ON DEATH ROW" - DR. DRE W/SNOOP DOGGY DOGG, KURUPT, LADY OF RAGE, RBX
It may seem contradictory to act like any track on one of the most famous rap albums of all time is something you might've slept on, but seriously-- why don't we talk more about how great the album closing Death Row call-to-arms is here? And there' a Bushwick Bill cameo!
#15
"I SHOT YA" (REMIX) - LL COOL J FEAT. KEITH MURRAY, FAT JOE, PRODIGY, FOXY BROWN
It may suffer in the shadow of a hit single like "4,3,2,1," but we can't front on LL's grimy, gritty group shot from 1995. Featuring one of his most bombastic verses, a straight up classic by Prodigy, and a star turn from Foxy Brown, it reminded everyone (once again) that LL can go hardcore with the best of 'em.
#14
"MONSTER" - KANYE WEST FEAT. NICKI MINAJ, RICK ROSS, JAY-Z
Kanye flew his collaborators to Hawaii to record this standout from MY BEAUTIFUL DARK TWISTED FANTASY, and Nicki Minaj's hyperkinetic verse absolutely steals the show. The controversial Jake Nava-directed music video remains one of Kanye's most memorable.
#13
"BANNED FROM TV" - N.O.R.E. FEAT. JADAKISS, STYLES P, BIG PUN, CAM'RON, NATURE
Swizz Beatz was a new producer when he laced N.O.R.E. with this anthemic beat and six hungry wordsmiths let loose on it. It's an anthem that sounds of its era—and we mean that in the BEST way.
#12
"RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE" - THE FUGEES W/A TRIBE CALLED QUEST, JOHN FORTE, BUSTA RHYMES
Over one of Clef's best productions, these legendary crews repped from Native Tongues and the Refugee Camp while singing the praises of none other than Muhammad Ali. It's the Blackest, dopest shit you've ever heard. Is it the most underrated posse cut of all time? We think so.
#11
"DON'T CURSE" HEAVY D & THE BOYZ FEAT. PETE ROCK & CL SMOOTH, Q-TIP, KOOL G RAP, BIG DADDY KANE
Heavy D knew that he was every grandmother's favorite rapper and decided to poke fun with that image (and with the idea of censorship) while recruiting some fellow legends to do it. It's a wonderfully tongue-in-cheek moment that showcases real camaraderie, over a sick Booker T. & The M.G.'s flip.
#10
"STAY FLY" - THREE SIX MAFIA FEAT. EIGHTBALL & MJG, YOUNG BUCK
Legends gon' legend. It's a victory lap for some titans of Memphis rap. Call it a "crossover" hit all you want, some songs are just dope. And this is one of 'em.
#9
"4, 3, 2, 1" - LL COOL J FEAT. REDMAN, METHOD MAN, CANIBUS, MASTER P, DMX
The song that launched one of the most infamous beefs in rap history, it's almost taken for granted that it's also one of the dopest posse cuts of all time. Erick Sermon provides the beat, as a handful of rap icons do their thing.
#8
"NOT TONIGHT" (LADIES NIGHT REMIX) - LIL KIM FEAT. ANGIE MARTINEZ, MISSY ELLIOTT, LEFT EYE, DA BRAT
Hip-Hop had precious few all-star female posse cuts when Lil Kim tapped four fierce emcees for this girls-night-out classic. An iconic performance at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards cemented it as a rap standard.
#7
"LIVE AT THE BBQ" - MAIN SOURCE FEAT. NAS, JOE FATAL, AKINYELE
The legendary track from CRITICAL BEATDOWN is famous for announcing a pair of newcomers named Akinyele and Nas, but let's not forget that "...BBQ" is also just a blazing posse cut that captures the round robin energy of friends freestyling in the basement.
#6
"I GOT 5 ON IT" (REMIX) - THE LUNIZ FEAT. DRU DOWN, E-40, SHOCK G, RICHIE RICH, SPICE-1
Some shit you just have to do. Whether this is an widely hailed classic or woefully slept on masterpiece might depend on where you grew up, but we weren't going to do this list and just not mention this Bay Area roll call. It's just all NoCal love, and it's just as cool today as it was 25 years ago.
#5
"FLAVA IN YA EAR" (REMIX) - CRAIG MACK FEAT. THE NOTORIOUS B.I.G., RAMPAGE, LL COOL J, BUSTA RHYMES
The song that really let the world that Bad Boy had arrived. Craig Mack's original single was a hit, but it was subsequently overshadowed by this classic. Fans can recite everybody's verse on this one.
#4
"BUDDY" - DE LA SOUL FEAT. JUNGLE BROTHERS, Q-TIP, MONIE LOVE, QUEEN LATIFAH
The Native Tongues were already earning a reputation for outside-the-box creativity when De La Soul dropped this D.A.I.S.Y. Age ode to coitus. It's so freewheeling and whimsical that you might not notice how naughty it is; but the vibe stays breezy.
#3
"INTL PLAYERS ANTHEM (I CHOOSE YOU)" - UGK FEAT. OUTKAST
It's a song that has come to epitomize rappers gettin' grown. After years of songs about being playas and pimps, two of the South's most iconic acts gave the Dirty an ode to matrimony. Produced by DJ Paul of Three Six Mafia, the ceremony begins with an uber-classic verse from André 3000, and Big Boi, Bun B and Pimp C do the rest from there. Three Six joins in on the remix.
#2
"SCENARIO" - A TRIBE CALLED QUEST FEAT. LEADERS OF THE NEW SCHOOL
Widely considered one of the greatest posse cuts of all time, “Scenario,” which was the third single from "The Low End Theory," also served as a launchpad for Busta Rhyme’s solo career.
#1
"SYMPHONY" - MARLEY MARL W/BIG DADDY KANE, CRAIG G, KOOL G RAP, MASTA ACE
Marley put together Hip-Hop's Avengers for this Juice Crew-defining cut. Indisputably one of the greatest rap tracks ever, and a posse cuttour de force, this is one of Marley's masterpieces.

The Novice
"Oh no! Oh no! I'm late!" Lidian kept saying to herself, running through the city to get to her destination. Wanting to become the best upcoming mage as can be though, unfortunately, she tends to wake up late. Sometimes happens for her but she is determined. Maneuvering through crowds of people to get where she needs to be. She may sometimes be late, it doesn't stop her from wanting to learn.
She finally makes it to her destination, opening the door but noticed the lights have not turned on. "Uh... hello!" She called out. "Teach? Mister Grelotta?" Lidian walked around and noticed that it felt empty. Almost as if the person packed everything and left in a hurry. She remembered coming across the dusty knick knacks that would cause her to sneeze but her teacher insisting that they are magically imbued and not to touch them. She eventually sees a piece of paper taped onto the wall. She went to it, grabbing it off the wall and read it aloud.
"I know that you will come here and see this place is empty. Just coming out to say that I have scammed you along with countless others. However much money you gave me is long gone for I have skipped town. You idiots were easy to fool believing that magic is real..." The last sentence hurt Lidian to the core. "So... he was a fake?"
Tears were forming but she took in a deep breath and exhaled slowly. "N-No... No crying!" She says to herself. Lidian used the tape left on the wall, hanging the paper for whoever else comes by to see it and marched out of the building. "I am not giving up that easily! Magic is real... I just know it is! And I won't stop until I learn whatever I need to learn to make my ancestor proud!"
Lidian walked aimlessly through the city, lost in thought but more so speaking outloud, getting a few stares and raised eyebrows overhearing a girl talking to herself. "Okay... the guy turned out to be a fraud. Meaning all the money I gave him every week was... kinda my fault. That is okay. So if he is fraud, doesn't mean what he said about magic could be the truth. Right? Magic is definitely real! My ancestor was titled The Arch-Mage for a reason! Judt have to... start all over again finding another, and legit, teacher... And possibly convince them with however much sum of money to teach me... but... where can I find that kind of person..."
She stopped her self rambling and halted her aimless walk to see she had come across a cafe. Lidian had never been in one of these before. "Mystikal Cafe... huh. I guess I can try it out." Walking inside, she sees the lively scene of people talking amongst each other at their respective tables. The wallpaper colors of bright blues snd pinks made the place pop, feels welcoming.
The place seems to be mostly an all-female staff with waitresses garnering a maid outfit with one standing out to being more "out of uniform" with theirs not fully proper and gliding around on rollerblades. Lidian walks to one of the empty tables, taking a seat as the one waitress that stuck out like a sore thumb glided to her table. "Well, haaaaaylooo!" She says with a cheery voice. Up close she can see her hair blocking her left eye and notices some orange dye streaks on it which makes a lot of sense to her sticking out more. Possibly more of a punk style troll. "Welcome to the Mystikal Cafe and I will be your lovely waitress for today. Name's Anyssa Hanell and what might ya be getting today, missy? Might I recommend an espresso shot along with a velvet cake slice topped with some strawberry frostinng."
"U-Um... oh wow..." Lidian didn't expect to be put on the spot. She doesn't even know what wants nor what they have. What if she says a certain item and they don't actually have it? "Uh... d...- Um... Donut!" She finally made her decision.
"Just a donut?" Anyssa raised a brow, taking her notepad out and pen. "What kind? And do you want a drink? Latte? Hot coffee? Cappuccino?"
"Um... u-uh..." This girl is trying to test her. Lidian feels like she might explode. What kind of donuts do they have? This Anyssa girl didn't list them. Do they have chocolate? Powdered? Plain? They gotta have plain, right? A place that have donuts should always have plain donuts. " P... P-Plain! And just regular coffee!"
Anyssa raised s brow but eventually smiled. She can see that might've almost given the girl a panic attack by putting them on the spot. "Gotcha. Plain donut and a regular coffee coming right up." She wrote down the items along with the table number and was about glide to the front counter until she heard the girl to not go yet.
"Wait, please! I... wanted to ask some questions."
Anyssa stood where she was and slowly glided back to the their table. "Something wrong?"
"Well... okay... I am trying to learn magic. I went to a peraon that, who I thought, knew magic but uh... I just found out that he conned me... along with my money that I gave him... and I am looking for anyone... SOMEONE! I know it sounds crazy and stupid that magic might not be real or whatever but... I think it's real. My ancestor was a mage and I want to make her proud to be the best there is just like her. So... do you know anyone or have some leads that I can search out for?"
Anyssa carefully listened and smiled. "Pretty determined to wanting to learn this whole magic thing, huh? I'll be right back."
Lidian watches the girl glide away and see them talking to one of the other girls behind the counter, handing them her order and then seeing her going in the back. From there she merely looks down at the table, tapping her finger on it until she heard someone clearing their throat. Looking up, she sees a girl wearing the same maid uniform and having a side haircut. She was smiling at them. "I heard you are searching for teacher of magic?" She says. "Name's Merlee. Merlee Zodius."
