Friday was my last day at Valve.
Leaving a job full of people and projects you love is always hard, but I have a pretty good reason for it this time around:
Next Monday is my first day at Cyan.
Feels appropriate to announce this on Riven's anniversary, the game that is entirely to blame for who I am as a concept artist and Art Director. WHO WOULD I EVEN BE if I hadn't had my 11yo mind blown by the little wahrk gallows counting toy in the Rivenese schoolhouse??? It's a mystery.
I can’t talk about what's on the horizon just yet—short of helping to get Riven out the door—but I’m thrilled to finally be a part of this studio, officially, after thirty years of wistful pining. If my ancient Riven fanart is anything to go by, it's been a long time comin.'😎
#cyan#myst#riven#valve#from one iconic 90's game studio to another#I have a type#I'm sure a lot of you follow me on here for my fandom stuff#(and probably a fair number of you don't even know what I do professionally)#but suffice to say this is a BIG OL' DREAM COME TRUE for baby Claire (and adult Claire)

lmfao it turns out Firmament used AI tools to modulate human voiceovers and muss up some textures and now kickstarter backers are malding and asking for their money back. and news outlets are treating those requests like they aren't ridiculous
#kickstarter backers wanting their money back for entirely baseless reasons is always funny but this is up there#the only salient complaint listed is that the human VA for the narrator isn't credited by name#and the studio's rebuttal is that the VA chose to not be credited by name + had full control over the AI modulation of their voice#and that this same VA had also gone without being credited in previous games at their own request#articles also seem to be implying that the lore of the game is “shallow” compared to Myst because of AI involvement#as opposed to the part where Myst is 3-4 games being dimly remembered through nostalgia goggles whereas Firmament is a standalone game#they could be lying about the VA thing i guess but that's such a bizarre and easily falsifiable claim to make

Someone on my dash mentioned the game Myst and it struck me that many people who didn’t (or did) grow up with this game series don’t know that there are BOOKS!

Myst III: Exile
Despite how I may have felt about the individual zones, I enjoyed Myst 3. The settings were somewhat imaginative, and the puzzles mostly enjoyable. The star of it for me was the writing. Saavedro was a compelling and sympathetic antagonist, and his motivations felt like a logical extension of what we saw of Sirrus and Achenar.

This is for a niche part of tumblr, specifically for the Myst series fandom. I've never done this before, so please bear with me.
Gentle, rolling hills of meadows laced in a rainbow of flowers are all you can see within the rim of the dormant volcano. It hasn't seen disturbance for millennia and nor will it again for the pressure from within the age is being released from the ocean vents at the bottom of the seabed, making a rich and vibrant home to sea life that would otherwise not exist in the cold, watery depths.
It is in these depths where a faint orange light can be seen emanating from the ocean vents and in this faint light, plant life exists, providing food to the bottom dwellers and they, in turn, food for the predators and they, in turn, food for the natives that choose to live on the outer rim in cliff like dwellings.
The natives live in harmony with the wildlife that surrounds them, respecting that every animal and insect and living thing has its place, that they live in a delicate balance with the nature around them. They only take what they need from the living things around them, and they give back so that the animals and plants continue to thrive.
It is a delicate dance, a beautiful harmony that is sung, that enchants the very air they breathe and commands the waves of the water. A constant, delicate, elegant rhythm that changes ever so slightly with each rise and fall of the seasons. It is a tune all living things on the age knows well and they yield place to the rhythm with an instinctual understanding that the giving and taking of life is the way it will be. They know when their chorus is about to end, and they give it up freely for the harmony of the song of life is more important that the tune of a single vessel. It is this melody that maintains the balance between all the living things, keeping the populations in check at all times.
It is simple.
It is beautiful.
It is complex.
May the travelers to this age bring reverence, lest the delicate frost-like nature of this age become disrupted. Be silent and watchful. Your turn will soon come when the melody shifts, bringing the people to you. This is the way of the Composed Age.

EVERYDAY DRABBLES - FINDING SOLACE AND MORE
WARNINGS : MDNI, Smut, Unprotected Sex [don't do it], Exhibitionism, Voyeurism, Use of pet names [angel, baby, dirty girl], etc.
You had been feeling like shit the entire day. To make it even worse, Jaehyun had been busy, too. Preparing for a comeback is no easy task, you know that. Neither is recording. You know that, too. But that doesn't stop you from going to his studio. Maybe his embrace would help. Or more. You enter without knocking because you know that he'd have his noise canceling headphones on. You see him on his chair, leaning back and arms raised to the back of his head. Goddamn. He looks fine. Black long sleeved shirt rolled up and black jeans that just hugs his thighs. You poke his shoulder. He breaks into a perfect dimpled smile on turning, and you mirror it. You only notice his friends later. Mark and Haechan are intently looking at the both of you being sweet and cringy. You nod to them, smiling.
On a normal day, you would have taken the chance to have a good conversation with them to pass time today. Today isn't that day. "Long day?" You hum as you snuggle into his neck. He seats you on his lap. You shift on his lap, trying to get comfortable, but you feel his length growing. Just perfect, you could just ride him if only his friends weren't there, but that doesn't stop you from rutting against his hard on. A slap to your ass resounds in the studio. You gasp, embarrassment coating your face red. You can't even fanthom to look at Mark and Haechan, but Jaehyun pays no mind to them, "You just have to warm my dick, yes, baby?" He whispers, massaging the soft flesh. "Can you do that for me, angel?" He pulls the silky fabrics away in a heartbeat and eases into you. You gasp as tears prick your eyes. You bite back a whimper and hide in his neck. Jaehyun squeezes your ass, "Your tight little cunt is sucking me in." He groans your name, unashamed of the sounds he make, "We are putting on a show for them, arent we?" He moves inside you, thrusting in so subtly. You whine, trying to look at the two only to see them so flustered on the couch. "Jae- please- more" you try to move, really, but he holds you down. "You want me to fuck you in front of them? My dirty dirty girl. you want them to see you ride my dick? Does that turn you on, baby?" He guides your hips and sets a pace that would just tip you over the edge.

I'm tempted to just meme on this (In my restless dreams, I see that place... Imaginopolis) but no. These are some of the backgrounds from 3D Movie Maker (the studio, not the movies themselves), and I gotta get back into 3D modelling because THIS is exactly the vibe I want to recreate. 256 color pre-rendered 3D from the mid-90s. that Myst feeling. Empty places with sharp edges and somewhat blocky modelling.

Inside the office of Fumito Ueda
This is a sequel of sorts to a post of mine from last year where I spotted a number of telling items on Fumito Ueda's office shelves, while more closely inspecting a picture from the Material Book included with the Japanese First Limited Edition of Hitokui no Ōwashi Trico. I'm calling this harmless voyeurism, coming as it does from someone who is exceedingly interested in this author and his work and appreciates the difficulty of such self-imposed challenges.
This new post will be looking more carefully at a this page size picture from The World of Fumito Ueda, a book Kadokawa released earlier this year, from which some detail can be extracted. The photo is stylized with a checkered transparency which makes this exercise substantially more difficult. Should you recognize any item I failed to identify, I ask that you use the comment box so I may improve this entry.
This is a rather pristine-looking 1976 Nintendo Kôsenjû Duck Hunt, a sophisticated light gun toy from Yokoi's R&D department consisting of a battery-powered projector and a plastic rifle whose objective was for the player to shoot at the duck whenever it appeared on the wall.
To the left is Nintendo's Custom Gunman toy, also designed by Gunpei Yokoi in 1976, consisting of a plastic cowboy figure with a receptor in its chest at which the player needed to aim with precision in order to score.
I remember reading about these in Gorges' L'Histoire de Nintendo. Both may have been toys that Ueda had as a child, but this is mere speculation from my end.
Two PSP games stored on this shelf: Metal Gear Acid (2004) and Lemmings (2006), a remake of a game which was highly influential to him, as he as indicated on multiple occasions. In the previous post I wrote, I spotted a big box copy of the original game.
An unexpected find here: a DVD entitled The Animal Motion Show, a visual library meant as reference for artists containing thousands of video clips animals in motion, no doubt very useful in key framing Toriko's unique animations.
A pair of books stand out to me and confirm many of my long-held suspicions on Ueda's influences: Hyperion's From Myst to Riven hardcover from 1997; and the 1974 Dover Publications' Doré Bible Illustrations.
The US and European versions of Shadow of the Colossus sitting beside Saints Seinaru Mamono, the Japanese edition of the Sony Cambridge Studio 2004 game, Primal.
More books, including the 2014 volume The Birth of Rockin' Jelly Beans. If you are not familiar with this reference, he is a Japanese lowbrow erotica artist who wears a mask in public appearances and whose identity remains unknown to this day.
Tucked in a lower shelf are the Gameboy Color edition of Prince of Persia, the Japanese version of Abe's Exodus (ABE '99) for the Playstation and the Wonderswan version of Toshio Iwai's Tenori-On.
Last but not least, here is the the Limited Run Games Limited 20th Anniversary Edition of Another World (either the PS4 or the PSVita edition, it's impossible to tell).

Back From Mysterium
I did a very small couple of posts before this, but Saturday at Mysterium blew my expectations out of the water, and so I decided I needed to circle back around and try again as a much bigger post.
First, foremost, and coolest - yes! I got to meet Rand Miller (bonus infamous RAWA just to the left as well)! Even better, for once in my life my social anxiety didn't turn me into a non-verbal lump and I was able to say a grand total of two full sentences and a greeting. If you know me at all, then you know that that's quite the accomplishment. Usually @timmcosplay has to do the talking for me when I inevitably choke on my own tongue, but by a quirk of fate we got separated (he wanted to get our Book of Ti'ana signed and got yoinked into a different line up from me, who wanted photo evidence) and I had no choice but to attempt to be a functional human. My theory is that I've talked to Rand's face so many times during the intro to Riven (I always talk back) that it was just second nature to say hello the second he looked at me. Genuinely, though, he's so kind and so patient and I'm stoked that he made time to meet all of us and then spend a couple hours even after that being a presenter and answering heaps of questions.
Tim may have not been with me directly, but he was still creeping in the sidelines getting photos of me getting photo'd and briefly chatting. ;)
Ultimately, we were split into three groups and everyone ran through the events of the day in a different order.
Tim and I were on Team Ytram (or Team Forg as I insisted on calling it) and had little Rivenese froggos on our badges.
After the meet and greet, we got lunch. It was simplistic fare, but the fact that we got hot dogs and Cool Ranch Doritos out back of the Cyan HQ means that they were very special hot dogs and Cool Ranch Doritos. Legendary!
And then... they actually allowed my wee goblin self and Tim to go through the iconic archway entrance and to scramble around their actual studio. I've seen pictures of the place on the internet before and knew how neat it would be to some degree, but now I know where everything is!
In no particular order....
Iconic signage and that giant honkin' Moiety dagger that Adam Savage apparently worked on?? It is truly large in person!
Costumes from Riven! Including Catherine's dress, which I remember my mom was always cooing over when I was playing the game on my clonky PC in the late 90's, and Gehn's costume, with Tim posing (and having not totally slightly held up the rest of the group by getting detail shots for cosplay purposes, no, no, he wouldn't do that....)
Art! Design sketches and THE MAP.
The infamous elevator wherein you'd better know your D'ni numbers if you want to get anywhere (I would get stuck).
And then... artifacts!
They had THE LEVER from the beginning of Riven. Did it never occur to me that the lever was a real lever? THE LEVER IS A REAL LEVER.
Plus there were goggles and books and Gehn's gun (AKA the only Game Over inducing object in Riven) and more character design sketches with actual costume fabric swatches! That last bit made Tim make high pitched glee noises, as someone who both designs and makes costumes himself.
There were presentations after all of that. Trailers, talks, a non-profit project to digitize over a hundred hours of behind the scenes footage from the making of Uru and Riven and other things, which we got a sneak peek of. They showed off a snippet of the remake of Riven. There was just so much. It was hours and hours and I was practically vi-bra-ting by the time we finally were ushered back to the bus and back to Spokane.
I will never entirely get over the fact that I was able to go see all that with my own two eyeballs. As someone who's been enamoured with the universe surrounding Myst island for the full 30 years of its existence, ever since I was 8 years old, who used to make big calligraphy posters of passages from The Book of Atrus and The Book of Ti'ana and tape them up all over Thorhild Central School whether my fellow students and teachers wanted me to or not, and who was so solidly influenced by the idea of books as literal doors to other worlds that it became a foundation for how I view my own characters and stories (namely that I'm no god, and they do have a life all their own), this is a treasured memory.

Thoughts On . . . Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened Remake
Frogwares’ remake of Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened is one of the most unsung game releases of 2023. So let’s take a quick look at the new features of the title and how they compare with the original.
If you’re unaware, Frogwares is a studio based in Ukraine, a country currently repelling a Russian invasion. The devs have repeatedly addressed their struggles and yet they launched it anyway. For that reason, I feel it would be inappropriate to score The Awakened. I make an effort in all my reviews to respect the developers who’ve put in the work to make the game I’m playing, even if I’m not a fan of the game itself. But making a game during an actual and presently-occurring war is another matter entirely.
That being said, I think The Awakened Remake merits examination, even if I don’t want to review it. If nothing else, the game is a fascinating glimpse into the evolving story of point-and-click adventure games and their place in the greater gaming landscape. It’s also instructive to compare the two different Holmeses, to see how the character changes with several years of pop culture reshaping.
Second Awakening
The Awakened Remake feels like the culmination of Frogwares’ attempts to evolve its signature adventure game series from a post-Syberia form to a post-Telltale form. In the Dark Ages (a.k.a. the early aughts), adventure games adhered almost religiously to the Grim Fandango style: Third-person clicking navigation with viewpoints fixed in what I call “security camera” position. The Awakened (the original, that is), began the transition away from that to first-person exploration -- the Myst style, if you will.
The series continued to experiment with different stories and gameplay types. It vacillated between first- and third-person, tested new detection mechanics, and even dipped into true crime with the audacious Jack the Ripper recreation. The series rebooted with The Devil’s Daughter (though it retained at least a few story details unique to the previous game series). I’m not sure whether Chapter One and The Awakened Remake are set in the same continuity, though the retention of the new voice cast would suggest so.
Now here we are in 2023, and what does a Sherlock Holmes adventure game look like? It’s a third-person exploration title with an over-the-shoulder camera and the environments are a series of contained maps. In other words, it looks like several of Telltale’s later titles, or Dontnod’s. That’s not a bad thing . . . it’s just an observation of how the medium has evolved and Frogwares’ Holmes along with it.
The Awakened remake is also a microcosm of Sherlock Holmes’ . . . let us say “changeable” position in pop culture. The Holmes of the original Awakened was more of a Jeremy Brett-style depiction, hewing close to the source material’s dry wit and intense focus. The Holmes of the remake, on the other hand is -- being blunt -- young, hot, and mentally unwell. It’s not really to my taste, I’m not gonna lie. It’s clear the impetus for this comes from BBC Sherlock, which I despise. But the remake Holmes has an earnest gumption I’ve never seen in the character before -- it’s a choice, and not one I dislike.
Lovecraft’s Walking Tour
One of the benefits of remaking Awakened is that Frogwares has a chance to elevate a game that, through a combination of underpowered graphics and muddy art design, never had a chance to serve Lovecraftian horror as it’s meant to be served. And for the most part, they did -- there’s a creeping sense of wrongness on the periphery of most scenes, at least when you play as Holmes, a feeling that something isn’t quite right.
That’s the essence of Lovecraftian horror, in my opinion, this sense that something’s wrong, but there’s no way for your tiny human brain to understand what. One of the reasons I enjoy both iterations of this game is because Sherlock Holmes is the type of person who would absolutely refuse to accept there’s something his brain can’t comprehend. That makes him uniquely vulnerable to being overwhelmed by that sensation. Watson’s POV is more grounded and reliable by comparison.
The locations are mostly similar to what they were in the original, though the asylum section is much shorter and cuts out a subplot foreshadowing the arrival of one Moriarty. New Orleans serves a nice slice of Southern Gothic horror to balance out the traditional European Gothic elsewhere in the game. It’s a bit of a shame that Frogware’s didn’t correct one particular oversight: For a game based on Lovecraft’s work, we never go to New England, Lovecraft Country itself.
As far as gameplay goes, I only have one major complaint: This game desperately needs an auto-run option. Or at the very least, the sprint button needs to be sticky -- meaning, you press it once and the characters run until you press it again. Having to hold down a button to get them to get a jog on feels archaic, especially since the environments are much bigger than in your average adventure game.
Our next case, Watson?
Point-and-click adventure games will never be to everyone’s taste, no matter how much a developer might wish to court a bigger audience. Aiming for the Walking Dead/Life is Strange is a wise choice of direction for the Frogwares’ series if it’s going to capture any mainstream appeal while retaining its identity. That is to say: This is a good remake and I like where Frogwares is going with its new series.
Assuming the new series will follow the old, we’re looking at a remake of Sherlock Holmes vs Arsene Lupin next. Sherlock Holmes, tormented lad that he is in the new series, definitely deserves a lighthearted chase with a gentleman thief, so I’m looking forward to what Frogwares does next. My best wishes to them!
