Day 129 – Happy hour(s)
We had our sparkling rosé with breakfast, which was good as always. There is always a slight variation and J loved the muesli. Today was an extremely windy day. We tried to walk down the hill, but it was so windy we turned back and got an Uber down to the beachfront. We tried a new place today, Mynt café. J had wanted to go to Tiger’s Milk, which appeared to be very popular, but the live music was just too loud. In fact, Mynt was right next door and we could still hear the live music at a more pleasant level. We arrived just a bit before two-for-one happy hour, which is from 4pm – 7pm. The drinks were fine, as you would expect for a two-for-one happy hour place.
J had been wanting to try the food at the local Hard Rock café, so we stopped in there for a pre-dinner snack. J liked the cobb salad. She didn’t like that they charged her 35 rand for some dressing on the side. S’ hurricane came with blended pineapple chunks and was a bit odd. J’s verdict is that this is the worst Hard Rock she’s been to.
We came back to the hotel and were pleased to learn that the shrimp and crayfish cocktail WAS BACK and better than ever. S deemed it near perfect as it had the right amount of horseradish. For a moment we considered ordering seconds. That is when S reminded us that if we had our way, we could easily get through more than 5 portions, EACH. Given the pricing, this would become less than economical in short order, particularly by South African standards so we will exercise some restraint and limit ourselves to one each a day... subject to availability. Wine and canapés were good as usual, but S was disappointed that there was no chicken liver parfait.
We had a lengthy chat with James and might have offended the owner of the hotel by asking him if the staff could remove their masks. We learned from James that people are paid as low as 20 rand an hour (about $1.30) for menial work in South Africa. J was immediately perturbed that we had been charged more than that for a tiny cup of dressing on the side at Hard Rock cafe. We also had a short, but nice chat with room 5 as the lady slinked by to order a bottle of wine to the room. S told her they were more than welcome to join for aperitivo hour(s) with their one-year-old baby. We wait with bated breath to see if they will show up for this evening’s aperitivo hour(s).
