Review : Dragged Across Concrete (2019)

One of my favorite things about year-end list season is learning about films you may have missed.  I had a few obscure movies that I planned on catching, but in asking my film-loving friends for suggestions, I was surprised to learn about a film completely off my radar.  This is how I cam to see Dragged Across Concrete. 

Henry Johns (Tory Kittles) returns to Bulwark from a stint in prison to find his mother Jennifer (Vanessa Bell Calloway) prostituting with his younger brother Ethan (Myles Truitt) in the home, bringing him to the realization that he must take fast measures to improve life for himself and his family.  A few weeks later, detectives Brett Ridgeman (Mel Gibson) and Anthony Lurasetti (Vince Vaughn) are filmed by a civilian using excessive force on a drug dealer named Vasquez (Noel G.), forcing Chief Lt. Calvert (Don Johnson) to suspend the detectives for six weeks without pay.  The timing is bad for both detectives : Ridgeman is being pressured by his wife Melanie (Laurie Holden) to move due to harassment that their daughter Sara (Jordyn Ashley Olson) receives from other local kids, while Lurasetti has just purchased an engagement ring and is trying to find the proper time to propose to his girlfriend Denise (Tattiawna Jones).  Ridgeman brings Lurasetti in on a potential scheme to rob the owners of a questionable rental location, as the details of the situation lead Ridgeman to believe that illegal money may be involved.  Meanwhile, Henry and his friend Biscuit (Michael Jai White) find themselves playing muscle for a group of heavily armed criminals, led by Lorentz Vogelmann (Thomas Kretschmann), the tenant in the mysterious rental that Ridgeman and Lurasetti are staking out.  As the criminals move into action, the suspended detectives follow, leading to a string of tragedies and an eventual standoff with extreme costs.

Dragged Across Concrete is a story that parallels the struggles of a modern day, hard-nosed cop (read : traditional man) forced to politically correct himself in a world that watches and is ready to crucify someone versus a disadvantaged man forced to make bad choices and take extreme measures in hopes of getting a fair shake at life.  The gap in age between the Ridgeman and Lurasetti characters creates a tension as well, seeing as Ridgeman’s no-nonsense approach connected to his tenure buts directly up against Lurasetti’s hopes of settling down with his hands as clean as possible while still earning and maintaining a reputation as a solid cop.  What seems like a firebomb of bullets in the making actually turns out to be more of a test of will between the characters that possess the deepest sense of morals, despite their past actions.

The way that this film lays out hard choices on the table, warts and all, is extremely effective, forcing you to feel equally bad for (and understand) most every side presented with an issue, and the decisions that they’re forced to make due to these situations.  Watching people try to exact a Robin Hood mentality, in the sense that their actions are justified due to their targets being purveyors of greater and deeper wrong, creates a moral gambit with extremely real stakes tied to very tough lives.  The multiple narratives are effective in terms of the revelation of information, especially in terms of order, right down to Kelly’s key role in the turning point action just as we learn about her motherly-based fears.  Even the way that Henry and Biscuit are postured in terms of characteristics and power dynamic is flipped on its head before you realize it’s happening.

Darkness is the uncredited star of this film... the term neo-noir is made for movies that look and feel like this one.  The slippery slope of narrative choices made fits well with the fact that Ridgeman and Lurasetti have no real idea what they’re getting in to, with their blind ambition forcing them down a dangerous path.  Having a set of unknown antagonists exact their actions with no regard for human life is a truly chilling factor, like watching two cars that don’t see one another barrell towards an inevitably gruesome conclusion.  The special effects for the gorier scenes are certainly not for the faint of heart.  The soundtrack is completely out of left field, but somehow it works, as if the film is an echo of the exploitation genre, or something similar to Manhunter. 

Mel Gibson’s grizzled, veteran exterior, home pressures and lack of empathy play as a perfect centering device for the series of events that we are presented.  Vince Vaughn plays a proper early echo of Gibson’s eventual state, with his humor and charm giving him personality that pops.  Tory Kittles has a focus that parallels Gibson, but a completely different set of morals and obligations that fuel the laser focus.  Michal Jai White does a lot with a little, mostly through powerful reactions to the events around him, and putting weight in his key lines.  Thomas Kretschmann plays the silent menace role powerfully, leaning on anonymity and intimidation effectively.  Don Johnson continues a string of memorable performances in 2019, using his minimal screen time to put Gibson in his place with authority and guilt.  Laurie Holden and her desperate need to escape from her physical limitations and hostile environment provides a powerful driving force for Gibson.  Jennifer Carpenter, Fred Melamed, Udo Kier, Myles Truitt, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Tattiawna Jones, Noel G. and a host of other actors make brief but memorable appearances that drive the main five cast members to their eventual showdown.

Dragged Across Concrete may be enough to make me finally go back and check out the other works of S. Craig Zahler, which have become recent cult classics (including Brawl in Cell Block 99, which many of my friends have recommended for me).  I’m curious to see if and when I return to this film, although I could see it pairing well with a film like End of Watch as a double feature.
