A slow month for reading again (but better than the previous 😬) however all three were thoroughly enjoyed. That's it for this months intro, not going to lie to you, I have nothing else to say 😅

The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie

I read this book in a single day right at the start of the month when I still had good intentions of reading more... while my intentions led to little, it is a testament to the book that it was finished so quick. There is something comforting about an Agatha Christie novel, especially a Poirot one, and I really enjoyed reading the very first Poirot one for the first time and seeing just where the character started. As always, the pacing was good, the characters were intriguing, and the mystery was, well, mysterious! I especially loved that in this edition of the book they had printed both the official ending, as well as the original ending Agatha Christie wrote before she changed her mind. I thought it was a really interesting insight into her as an editor as well as a writer. I will say that I definitely preferred the official ending so was glad to see that was the one chosen by the printers! Overall, an engaging and fun read, a classic whodunit and should rightfully be included on any mystery lovers tbr list.

Beyond the Story: 10 Year Record of BTS by BTS & Myeongseok Kang

Am I biased? Probably. Do I care? No. This is for my personal record of the books I've loved this year and I loved every single second of this. I cried, laughed, reminisced, missed all of them more than is healthy probably, and felt indescribably proud of them and myself. I don't tend to read biographies, or nonfiction at all, but I have been listening to BTS since the end of 2015 and they have taught me so many important lessons, as well as offered me comfort and joy in ways that they probably can't even imagine. Reading this book felt not only like a window into a section of their past that we hadn't been able to see before, but also like a portal right back to my own past. As ridiculous as it may sound, they are all so relatable and it makes me so happy to remember how far they've come, as well as filled with hope for my own future. I genuinely don't think it's an exaggeration to say that they reminded me how to just be happy. Yes they're not solely responsible for it, nor do they miraculously solve everything, but they definitely have improved my life with their music and unwavering (if remote and one sided!) presence. For that, I will never be able to thank them enough.

The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson

I really really enjoyed this! To be completely honest, I was nervous going in that it wouldn't live up to my expectations for Sanderson, but I had no need to be concerned. Sanderson is a masterful world builder, has incredible characterisation, and enthralling plots. I am obsessed with the almost espionage elements of this book and am so happy to see that once again Sanderson has prioritised a beautiful found family at the centre of the relationships. It is truly a unique and fun story with so many twists and misdirects, and yet it is all written so cleverly that it isn't once blunt or off putting. I would highly recommend!

Myeongseok Kang: In The Name Chapter concept trailer put out by TOMORROW X TOGETHER last year, HUENINGKAI jumps all alone out of a house in the sky. Now the next page of that chapter has been revealed: the new album, FREEFALL—falling as a result of one’s own free will. The opening track, “Growing Pain,” begins with the line, “Been free falling,” and goes into how it hurts to fall (“my whole body aches”). But, as the lyrics to the single “Chasing That Feeling” describe, to choose not to fall would be to just wait around for the world to crumble to pieces, turning away from reality to stay stuck in a mirage: “I turn my back on heaven and / Fall from the sky / Maybe I’ll miss it for good / The sweet mirage.” Like the boys of TOMORROW X TOGETHER acknowledge in the track “Dreamer,” the world is divided into “adults who don’t dream and boys who only have dreams.” In order to keep their dreams from disappearing like a daydream, they have to face reality before they become adults—people who no longer dream. It’s only during youth that something like this could ever be possible. It’s a period of life between boyhood and adulthood, when you can say, “in that typical fork in the road, I’m gray,” and it’s there that a boy’s dream ultimately becomes an existential force as he battles his way through real life (“I dream again / The name I retrieved”) allowing him to define who he is. The group declares in “Deep Down” that the “horn suddenly coming out of my head” that once left them “feeling ashamed” is now “a big crown on me / No longer a hideous horn / You’re my silver lining.” It���s a sentiment that anyone trying to make their dreams come true while surviving real life will recognize. By living life without running away from reality or giving up on their dreams, the boys learn to accept everything about themselves just the way they are. In spirit, then, The Name Chapter: FREEFALL is a comprehensive piece that plays out a lot like a road trip movie as the young boys navigate their way through the real world, and is also a pivotal moment in the journey TOMORROW X TOGETHER has taken together so far. Ever since debuting with the song “CROWN,” the boys have been up in the air somewhere between reality and fantasy. In “Run Away,” they even ask themselves, “Should we run away from reality?” Later, in the music video for “0X1=LOVESONG (I Know I Love You)” featuring Seori, they take off in a car instead, but they still can’t escape the real world. Now, in FREEFALL, they’re redefining what it means to be young by making a U-turn away from Neverland and straight toward reality—living there without hiding their horns or their dreams.

“Growing Pain” draws on the thrashing power of emocore for its particular sound, with the voices of the TOMORROW X TOGETHER members intentionally buried deep into the soundscape, adding a sense of depth and suggesting the feeling of pushing emotions down inside. They even sing the chorus in a restrained falsetto (“Into the pain / Throw it”), keeping any potentially explosive outbursts at bay. It’s once the album moves onto its seventh track, “Skipping Stones,” that the boys really break out with pure rock power. Earlier in the album, they see the horns on their heads as crowns and accept them as part of their identity in “Deep Down,” and the rest of reality, too, in “Happily Ever After” (“Even after closing the fairy tale book / Life still goes on … So what? I rather like it this way”). When they finally get to “Skipping Stones,” they reaffirm their determination to get on with the real world, bruises and all: “The water that swallowed the scars will become calm someday / And it will have a wide embrace.” In FREEFALL, the sound itself is the journey the group takes, with each track on the album finding its own way to leverage the music to match the message, the soundscape of each coming together to form one unified whole. Where the emocore sound of “Growing Pain” explores how much it hurts to fall back into reality, the synth-pop “Chasing That Feeling” tries to race fearlessly through that real world (“My fate, come and kiss me / I just keep on chasing that feeling”). The boys’ voices are full of sorrow but still dynamic as each sings about how they “turn my back on heaven.” Their vocals grow calmer and the beats in the album slow as it moves through the R&B-infused “Dreamer” and the synth-laden “Deep Down.” The progressive levelling out of emotions that flow through the album changes direction when the music briefly drops out during this track on the line, “Deep down I need you more,” acknowledging their horns as high-tempo EDM beats take over from the second verse. After an atmospheric free fall, the album rises again from “Happily Ever After,” the boys’ voices chipper right from the start. The track’s followed up by the rocker “Skipping Stones,” which then segues into “Blue Spring,” opening with the rousing words, “When we’re high / When we’re low / You’re always by my side / All my youth is filled with your warmth.” With no fear of the real world now, the boys are fully open to their identity and to love as the “once so chilly world / Blooms into spring at last.” Love has always been one of TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s core tenets, but they may find a different kind of value in it after crashing down into reality in free fall. The “gray” TOMORROOW X TOGETHER members’ vocals make good on the messages and music of every track in this journey to discover their youth, perfectly encapsulating what it’s like for someone to find their own path through life while they’re still young. Though each track off the album explores a different genre, they form one complete story solely through the music.

The Name Chapter: FREEFALL aims to flesh out a different musical genre on every one of its tracks, and the songs eschew variations of each of their themes in favor of repeating the choruses and verses to make for a series of tight, compact packages. Some might brush this approach off as following the current pop formula, but TOMORROW X TOGETHER makes the album their own by “Chasing That Feeling” through finely tuning their vocals to emphasize the message behind each song and the album’s journey as a whole. In other words, the group takes the trappings of pop and brings something magical to the story and the message—TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s own brand of pop music. Like dream-filled boys forge their own destinies in a world where adults have lost the ability to dream, the group finds their identity within the world of pop. That’s how these young men set up their own little space within the real world.

​Magic takes root in reality and flourishes 

Oh Minji: “Sometimes magical moments can be found in the most unmagical places.” Those are the words that close the concept teaser for TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s latest album, The Name Chapter: FREEFALL, as the boys say goodbye to their own personal Neverland and each tumbles down in an “endless fall” (“Growing Pain”) by choice (“I throw myself,” “Chasing That Feeling”) to land somewhere new—somewhere where magical moments can no longer be found. Unlike Peter Pan, they can’t fly, much less be boys forever. In the video, they’re like flowers that “turn my back on heaven and fall from the sky” (“Chasing That Feeling”), left to bloom in solitude along a barren asphalt road and next to a sewer where they’ll be washed away come even the slightest rain.

The place TOMORROW X TOGETHER has stumbled upon, however, is not entirely REALITY, as the name of their concept clip echoes, but rather one where buildings and umbrellas help protect them from the downpour. Unlike in the concept teaser, in the REALITY clip, they’re safe from being swept away by rain, and there’s no risk of “pain on my flesh” or having to be “prepared to die” (“Chasing That Feeling”). But it’s still clearly a set made for TOMORROW X TOGETHER, with it raining upwards, and words like “DOWN TO EARTH” and “FREEFALL” written on the ground and walls. They seem to have finally stopped falling and have their feet on the ground in the concept video for MELANCHOLY, the next in the series, but given that YEONJUN is in a cage and SOOBIN is behind bars, they’re not free, either. It could be that the wolfdog that’s with them in the fake reality—a place that’s neither completely real, nor where the boys are entirely free—is a symbolic mirror for the boys themselves. The animal—finally free from its simultaneously protective and restrictive cage (Neverland) but still barred from entering the real world—comes across as an analogy for Peter Pan-like characters in the real world: boys who want to become adults but can’t because they have never seen a real adult with their own eyes.

Even though they choose not to “run away and avoid” things and instead fall and deal with the accompanying agony, there’s no doubt that facing the wicked destiny that dooms them to “wander” comes with its fair share of growing pains (“Deep Down”). But there are times when you have to go through something painful in order to have something better at the end. For example, the TOMORROW X TOGETHER members wear pearls around their necks in the CLARITY concept clip. It’s only after an oyster’s shell is invaded by a foreign body and the creature endures the pain that a pearl is finally formed, so they act as an exclusive medal of bravery for those who have dealt with pain (“thought my blood spills and bones break … I throw myself into a dream that doesn’t lie,” “Growing Pain”). TOMORROW X TOGETHER are now standing on top of the true real world, having overcome their pains and earned their pearls and freedom. For them, reality is the roof that they thought had been there to protect them all along. It's somewhere they could fall from at any given moment and once again be left unprotected from the elements, but it’s also where they can turn down the “Devil by the Window” tempting them with whispers (“Dream on, dream on, good night!”) and finally say, “To a new sun every day, good morning” (“Happily Ever After”).

The noises that can be heard through the concept films feel like glitches that come about because TOMORROW X TOGETHER, once living in a fairy tale-like world, is entering the real one. The noises crack and sputter as the boys stand “in that typical fork in the road” where “adults who don’t dream and boys who only have dreams” exist. It’s at that fork—where they face reality without giving up their youth—that the “magical moments” bloom. Like this album, for one.

BPP, I've been waiting to see if you would talk about the weverse article but since no one has asked I'm going to. Wth is Hybe doing? 1st Jhope "leads contemporary" and then Namjoon, THEE Namjoon who created the whole idea of Spring Day isn't mentioned at all. Please tell me your thoughts. Sure lets say Hybe hates Jimin but now they hate Namjoon too? It makes no sense for something like this to come from Hybe writers.

For anyone who hasn't read the article yet, here's the English version and I suggest you skim it at least so you know what's actually written.

Anon, yours is actually the first ask I've gotten on it today, and your gut feeling that it's not usually staff writers at Weverse pushing out these articles is correct - I've written about how the magazine works before and it's usually Korean critics who are contracted to write pieces. But this time, the article is actually written by a staff writer, the Editor in Chief of Weverse Magazine to be exact, Kang Myeongseok - the same guy who authored the BTS book.

I understand why you're left scratching your head after reading it, and I've pointed out the magazine's shoddy writing before, but I think this latest issue is partly an instance of context lost in translation.

iMO, the point of the article is three things:

To use the upcoming anniversary of Spring Day to remind people who haven't yet purchased the BTS book, to get it.

To remind people that BTS are in fact still the top group and it's songs like Spring Day that gained them acclaim.

To tie Spring Day into the album narrative of BTS.

The point of the article isn't to give an accounting of how Spring Day was made or who led it, and you can glean this from how RM making the song is given only a sentence in the article -

"RM이 ‘BEYOND THE STORY : 10-YEAR RECORD OF BTS’에서 “한국 사람들 사이에서 오래 가고 싶은 노래”를 만들고 싶었다고 말했던 소망은 현실이 되었다."

- all that says is that RM's dream of making a touching song happened with Spring Day.

Two members are used as touchpoints: Yoongi and Hoseok. Yoongi because his personal story ties literally to the lyrics, and Hoseok because his interpretive dance piece incorporating b-boying and contemporary elements, is the piece which introduces the Wings/You Never Walk Alone album on which Spring Day is on. It's also Hoseok who starts the dance in the choreography alongside Jimin - the language in the article implies the author is talking about Hoseok literally starting the song in the stage performance with Jimin. It's also a continuation of how Hoseok's dance piece is what starts the album. The mention of contemporary dancing with Jimin should've been highlighted more prominently, but the following mentions of contemporary dancing in the article (eg Black Swan) is referring to the group as a whole. Not Hoseok and not Jimin.

Like I said, the point of the article doesn't appear to be a detailed account of how BTS made Spring Day or the contemporary dancing strength of the group. The two key members for both things - Namjoon and Jimin - are given only a cursory mention at best. I don't think anybody reading the article in Korean, or even English, will come away thinking that's the point. The article honestly just reads like an elaborate ad for the BTS book using the 7th year anniversary of Spring Day as the catalyst.

Is this worth any of the hysteria I've been seeing on Twitter? No. In my opinion. But I also won't really fault anyone feeling some type of way about the article. Weverse in general does a shitty job with their feature pieces. They deserve all the criticism. The only thing they seem to do decently enough is their interviews.

“Spring Day” non avrà mai fine. I BTS concludono la canzone con le parole, “ti/vi prego, resta/te” e questo è il loro modo di dirci che sicuramente ci rincontreremo, se solo sapremo “aspettare ancora un po'.” Ma non appena espirano l'ultima sillaba, i tanti suoni di sottofondo, fino a quel momento sospesi nell'orizzonte melodico della traccia, svaniscono. Così come l'orizzonte al passaggio dal giorno alla notte, “Spring Day” si chiude su una nota amara e desolata nelle voci dei ragazzi. E l'ironia è che il vuoto e la solitudine lasciati da un brano che, fondamentalmente, parla di un ricongiungimento imminente possono essere mitigati solo riascoltando la canzone. L'oscurità e la tristezza iniziano a dissiparsi solo quando facciamo ripartire “Spring Day”, con i suoi calmi accordi e le melodie alle tastiere. Eppure sappiamo che ci aspetta di nuovo un finale nell'oscurità più totale. Se quello è davvero il finale, se il vuoto è il luogo oscuro in cui vengono inghiottite le loro voci, come può il tempo riprendere a scorrere? Il video musicale di “Spring Day” si apre con V inginocchiato nella neve, intento ad ascoltare il suono di un treno, ancora distante, ma che si sta avvicinando. Non c'è alcuna promessa o garanzia che V potrà raggiungere quel “là” dove si trova il “voi/tu” destinatari/o della canzone, anche dovesse salire su quel treno. Ma il convoglio può comunque trasportarlo altrove, lontano dalla stazione innevata in cui aspettava tutto solo. Dunque, mentre riascoltare la canzone ci consente di rimettere in moto il tempo congelato, il suo video musicale dà invece vita e movimento alla dimensione spaziale. Fondamentalmente, “Spring Day” è una canzone riguardo ad una persona bloccata in un punto nello spazio/tempo, materialmente impossibilitata a raggiungere quel “tu/voi” di cui canta. Ma è anche e soprattutto un commovente viaggio emotivo riguardo le difficoltà affrontate per riuscire a superare quel momento di immobilità.

In BEYOND THE STORY : Il Racconto di 10 Anni di BTS – biografia ufficiale della band - SUGA ci parla del motivo per cui ha buttato giù il testo di questa canzone: “Provavo risentimento nei confronti di un/'amicə. Mi mancava un sacco ma non avevo modo di incontrarlə.” Ecco perché nel brano canta, “Sì, ce l'ho con te / Sei sparitə ma non passa giorno in cui io non mi ricordi di te / Ad esser sincero, mi manchi / Ma ho deciso che ti lascerò andare / Fa meno male che odiarti.” Non può più stare con l'amicə – con cui ha speso tanto del suo tempo, in passato –, ma la vita prosegue. E la canzone ritrae proprio questa svolta nella vita di una persona che, poco alla volta, inizia a lasciarsi alle spalle ciò che fino a quel momento non ha fatto che tenere prigioniero il suo cuore, come nella morsa gelida dell'inverno, per proseguire con la propria esistenza. Però, ovviamente, sarebbe impossibile dimenticare completamente il passato, né ci sembra giusto. Gli accordi iniziali e le tastiere sono il punto forte dell'apertura di “Spring Day.” Questi due suoni hanno il ruolo chiave di creare l'atmosfera poetica e melodica della canzone. Ma non appena vengono introdotte le voci dei ragazzi, queste melodie passano in secondo piano e altri suoni finiscono per coprirle. Più si prosegue nella traccia, più sostenuti diventano questi suoni. La melodia accelera fino a diventare un beat costante, andando ad amalgamarsi allo sfondo sonoro che complementa le parti canore dei BTS. Il verso “Il cuore sfreccia attraverso il tempo / Come uno Snowpiercer solitario” ben riassume quella che è la presentazione di “Spring Day”. Il treno menzionato – protagonista della graphic novel e film omonimi – continua ad accelerare senza sosta sul suo tracciato in un freddo glaciale che sembra infinito. Allo stesso modo, il cuore sfreccia solitario attraverso il tempo, continuando a rivangare l'oggetto nonché il momento della perdita subita. Quanta tristezza, rabbia e risentimento deve aver sopportato SUGA, prima di poter finalmente dire “Ti lascerò andare / Fa meno male che odiarti”? Sicuramente deve aver attraversato anche il circolo vizioso del rimpianto seguito dalla ragione e da nuovo rimpianto. SUGA riesce però a sublimare queste emozioni attraverso un linguaggio altamente raffinato. La sua voce esprime serenamente il testo, lasciandosi alle spalle tutto quell'insieme di emozioni sempre più complesse, diametralmente rispecchiate nella multi-forme gamma di suoni che troviamo in “Spring Day.” La sua melodia cattura chi ascolta senza mai concretamente lasciare che le emozioni divaghino liberamente. Quando la voce principale canta il climax “Mi manchi, mi manchi / Quanto ancora dovrò aspettare / Quante altre notti insonni attraversare” il resto segue cantato in una voce bassa e tranquilla. “Spring Day” è incarnazione del silenzioso e dolorosissimo percorso che una persona deve imboccare per trovare pace ed una chiusura alle proprie emozioni—quel complesso male di vivere che non sempre è facile esprimere fino in fondo. Per questo motivo, “Spring Day” e rappresentazione concreta del processo tramite il quale è possibile sublimare la sofferenza in arte, oltre ad essere un resoconto di come l'esistenza umana può diventare arte di per sé. Quando una persona riesce a parlare con tale e tanta calma delle proprie sofferenze, però, non significa necessariamente che sia riuscita ad interiorizzarle e ad accettarle. Semplicemente, questa persona sta facendo il possibile per lasciarsi alle spalle quel reame dell'immobilità a favore di uno in cui il tempo scorre di nuovo – e di farlo senza ferire il prossimo.

Mentre la colonna sonora si chiude con “ti/vi prego, resta/te”, il video si conclude con una nuova ripetizione del ritornello, che ricorda un po' un coro esultante. Il ritornello, che precedentemente aveva ceduto la scena ad altri suoni rimanendone sullo sfondo, riprende dunque il controllo della canzone, ora accompagnato da una chitarra carica di passione. Nel videoclip, i BTS sono fermi di fronte ad un grosso albero. Il treno su cui viaggiavano ormai è lontano e Jimin tiene in mano un paio di scarpe. Nell'ultima scena, vediamo quelle scarpe appese all'albero. La pianta non ha foglie né fiori, ma le sue radici sono saldamente vincolate al suolo. I ragazzi sono scesi da quel treno, che sembrava non doversi fermare mai, e si ergono saldi alla ritrovata terraferma. Non tutti hanno la fortuna di trovare un nuovo approdo da poter chiamare casa. La perdita è un'esperienza tanto più dolorosa perché tende a ripetersi ancora ed ancora nel corso della ripetitiva normalità delle nostre vite. Quindi, mentre il brano “Spring Day” introduce la problematica della perdita e di come la si può fronteggiare e superare, il video musicale ci mostra cosa potremmo trovare alla fine di quel tunnel d'oscurità, ci mostra la luce ed una speranza, ci propone una buona ragione per scendere dal letto al mattino e continuare a vivere. Come nel videoclip, la destinazione verso cui siamo diretti magari non è sempre tangibile, ma possiamo comunque continuare a coltivare quell'albero nei nostri cuori, poco alla volta, giorno dopo giorno. Non ha ancora foglie, ma la nostra esistenza tornerà a germogliare, le radici saldamente immerse nel terreno fertile dei nostri cuori. Certo, un cuore spezzato non può tornare ad essere esattamente quello di prima, ma le piante possono germogliare anche in quel terreno apparentemente secco e pieno di crepe. Finché, nonostante le costanti occhiate lanciate verso il passato, un giorno ci renderemo conto che abbiamo già compiuto un sacco di strada, molta più di quanta avremmo mai potuto immaginare.

I BTS hanno rilasciato “Spring Day” il 13 febbraio 2017, subito dopo l'uscita degli album The Most Beautiful Moment in Life (HYYH) e WINGS, i quali sono considerati la prima grande svolta nella loro carriera. La loro popolarità è cresciuta moltissimo nel 2015 con i due album della serie HYYH, ed i ragazzi hanno poi vinto il premio Artista dell'Anno ai MAMA 2016 con WINGS. Poco dopo il rilascio di YOU NEVER WALK ALONE, in cui è inclusa “Spring Day”, i BTS hanno iniziato a cambiare la traiettoria della musica pop a livello globale. Ed è proprio in questo frangente - quando sono stati investiti di ogni onore possibile ed il loro incredibile futuro ha iniziato a prendere forma – che hanno deciso di gettarsi un'occhiata alle spalle, a tutte le persone lasciate nel loro passato, irraggiungibili. Alcune di queste persone hanno trovato il successo, al pari dei BTS, ma altre non sono più tra noi. “I ciliegi sono in fiore. Anche quest'inverno sta finendo. Mi manchi. Mi manchi.” La fine dell'inverno rappresenta anche il lasciarsi alle spalle i ricordi del passato. Così come il dolore provato da SUGA al ricordo dell'amicə, il verso “Mi manchi” esprime il profondo senso di mancanza nei confronti di qualcuno di ormai irraggiungibile—quelle due parole sono specchio di quanto desideriamo riappropriarci di quei momenti, anche ciò dovesse significare tornare indietro nel tempo. Eppure la realtà non ci lascia altra scelta che guardare avanti e correre. Quando i BTS hanno debuttato, erano ben lungi dall'essere famosi – principalmente perché erano un gruppo idol rappresentato da una piccola etichetta discografica semi-sconosciuta. Prima di guadagnare fama, sono sempre stati sottovalutati ingiustamente e anche dopo, altrettanto ingiustamente criticati. L'unico modo per difendersi era raccogliere quanto più amore possibile, continuare a salire e dimostrare il loro valore. Durante questo processo, innumerevoli sono state le sofferenze accusate, ma hanno continuato a guardare dritto davanti a sé e sono saliti ancor più in alto. La storia del successo dei BTS, come raccontata a partire dalla serie HYYH fino all'album YOU NEVER WALK ALONE, è lo specchio di quanto affrontato da moltə giovani degli ultimi anni '90 e appartenenti alla generazione Z, nello stesso periodo. Era una competizione ed una corsa al successo che ha interessato quasi una generazione intera; alcunə sono sopravvissutə, ma altrə sono rimastə indietro—che si trattasse di idol, studenti impegnati nella preparazione per l'università o giovani alla disperata ricerca di un lavoro decente. A moltə non è neppure stata data l'opportunità di vedere la linea di partenza. HYYH cristallizza le esperienze dei giovani di quegli anni, mentre WINGS ritrae quella parte di gioventù che, dopo aver affrontato quel periodo difficile, ha potuto ritrovarsi. “Spring Day” è una preghiera in ricordo di tuttə coloro che sono scomparsə strada facendo, nonché la forma più pura di conforto che coloro che sono sopravvissutə potessero desiderare. Ancora oggi, coloro che sono arrivatə fin qui, non possono che tornare a fare i conti con le perdite subite. Ma dobbiamo resistere, continuare ad avanzare verso la fine dell'inverno, verso quello spazio e tempo in cui l'albero della nostra esistenza può germogliare, mettere foglie e fiorire di nuovo. “Spring Day” è un'ode dedicata a coloro che hanno accettato il proprio destino e sanno che, nonostante la tristezza ed il senso di nostalgia per il passato ancor sempre coltivato nel proprio cuore, dovranno continuare ad incedere verso il futuro. Riesce a catturare l'essenza stessa di come i coreani conducono le proprie vite, sempre impegnati a correre, gli occhi fissi sul trofeo, mai un attimo di respiro—esperienza, questa, che inevitabilmente non può che portare ad una perdita. E tuttavia tengono duro. Sì, forse qualche lacrima sarà versata lungo il percorso, ma non possono guardare indietro.

È da quando è uscita, 7 anni fa, che “Spring Day” non ha mai lasciato le prime posizioni della classifica giornaliera di Melon – vale a dire la piattaforma musicale più usata in Corea. Come leggiamo in BEYOND THE STORY : Il Racconto di 10 Anni di BTS, RM ha sempre desiderato creare una canzone che possa essere “amata dai coreani per molto molto tempo”, e con “Spring Day” quella speranza si è avverata. Nel corso di questi 7 anni, qualcuno avrà pianto a dirotto ascoltando questo brano a ripetizione, altrə magari l'avranno sentita per la prima volta nel momento in cui si sono decisə a guardare al futuro, pur portando il peso del passato nel cuore. Intanto, in Corea, il significato – concreto e simbolico – della primavera è cambiato, e con esso anche quello di ogni traccia che parli di questa stagione. La primavera è ora sinonimo di aspettative e sogni per un domani migliore, sebbene ancor strettamente interconnessi con i ricordi del passato e delle perdite subite. Ma si può dire che questa sia la prova che tuttə i giovani di allora – BTS compresi – sono ormai cresciutə. La perdita è un'esperienza che, bene o male, tocca tuttə quantə. Abbiamo tuttə rimpianti, certo, ma alcunə non dimenticano e piantano alberi nei loro cuori in ricordo delle persone che non possono o vogliono lasciarsi alle spalle. Nel comeback trailer ‘Boy Meets Evil’, che ha preceduto l'uscita di WINGS, j-hope ha dato prova delle sue rinomate doti di ballerino. Tra una potente mossa e l'altra, l'artista rappa “Mi manca il fiato, chiudo gli occhi su questa realtà distorta, stanotte”. Nel video musicale,

j-hope incarna le difficoltà fronteggiate dalla gioventù nel trovarsi faccia a faccia con le tentazioni umane – e tutto ciò in un periodo in cui i BTS non ricevevano che attacchi, dovevano far fronte ad impegni sempre più serrati e alla responsabilità di salire sempre più in alto. Ma quando lo vediamo in “Spring Day”, è a centro palco – insieme a Jimin – e guida una coreografia di gruppo in stile contemporaneo. I suoi movimenti sono fluidi, privi di interruzioni, esattamente come la canzone che tira dritto pur cullando rimpianti del passato nel cuore. “Spring Day” ha segnato l'inizio di una serie sempre meno sporadica di esibizioni in stile contemporaneo, per i BTS – che ritroveremo, ad es., anche in “Black Swan”. Dopo “Spring Day”, il gruppo si è sdebitato dell'amore ricevuto, attraverso la serie “LOVE YOURSELF”. Questi ragazzi, che sono dovutə crescere a dispetto delle cicatrici loro inflitte, non hanno mai smesso di contemplare e rivisitare quel periodo durante il quale amicə e coetaneə hanno vissuto perdite e le hanno dovute superare. Si sono fatti portatori di questo fardello in prima persona e hanno accolto a braccia aperte le persone incontrate lungo il percorso. Strada facendo, sono diventati adulti. Adulti di buon cuore. “Spring Day” celebra l'ascesa di questa gioventù ferita. E proprio questa canzone, che incarna i ricordi più tristi della giovinezza, è diventata l'inno universale di un'intera generazione ed epoca.

BTS lanzará un libro llamado “Beyond The Story: 10-Year Record of BTS”, el cual hablará de la historia del grupo.  ('Más allá de la historia: 10 años de récord de BTS')

Se lanzará el libro este  9 de julio, bajo la editorial Flatiron Books.

“Beyond The Story: 10-Year Record of BTS”, fue escrito por el periodista Myeongseok Kang y los miembros del grupo, y será publicado en Corea del Sur por Big Hit Music.

La traducción al inglés del libro estuvo a cargo de Anton Hur, en colaboración con Clare Richards y Slin Jung. La edición estadounidense tendrá 544 páginas y contendrá fotografías exclusivas, según Flatiron, y tendrá una primera tirada de un millón de ejemplares.

Another month. Wild.

I had a little book slump near the end of the month so things slowed down a little, but still before that I read like forty books so don't worry about that. I read some great books this month and some really bad ones actually (I one star books that are offensively bad and that happened this month) and I have three five star books and I am going to talk about those below.

Thornhedge by T. Kingfisher - T. Kingfisher is easily becoming one of my favourite authors, and this book is so good. The characters are amazing, the plot is so good and I do love a fairytale retelling so this book combines some incredible things for me. I think this book is out now and I highly recommend it if you like fantasy retellings with frogs and nice princes.

Beyond The Story: The Ten Year Record of BTS by BTS, translated by Myeongseok Kang, Anton Hur, Slin Jung and Clare Richards - I am an army, don't get me wrong and though in this book if you've been around for a bit nothing exactly will surprise you, it is incredibly well written and put together with interviews from each of the members. Also how this book is told is excellent too, with QR codes that lead to videos that connect to the period talked about in that part of the book. Anton Hur on translation is a masterstroke and he and the others really do such an incredible job on this book. If you're intrigued by the phenom that is BTS this is the book, if you're an army, this is your bible.

Artificial Condition (Murderbot Diaries #2) by Martha Wells - This series has an incredible reputation and and it is deserved and I really need to read these books more than once a year. The story of a robot that is sentient as they begin to figure out how they ended up sentient and accused of a crime, Artificial Condition explores them finding out more about their past while helping a team of researchers. I was hooked on this book, I need to read book 3 soon.

Resenha Um: Primeiro capítulo "Beyond The Story"

Beyond The Story, compilada e narrada por Myeongseok Kang, é a primeira biografia do grupo coreano Bangtan Sonyeondan**(방탄소년단***), mais conhecido mundialmente como BTS, mesma abreviação para Behind The Scenes**** ( comumente utilizada para os bastidores de produções cinematográficas), as siglas receberam um novo significado com a entrada dos artistas na cena mundial: Beyond The Scene*****. O título do livro utiliza das siglas tão conhecidas pelo fandom ARMY(fãs do grupo), amantes da música e pop culture para apresentar o conteúdo que teremos acesso ao adquirir a obra. Lançado em 2023 e publicado no Brasil pela Editora Galera Record, as páginas da obra abrem as portas para novas informações sobre a trajetória conturbada, cheia de altos e baixos do grupo.

A biografia tem 7 capítulos divididos em pequenos sub capítulos, que detalharei mais à frente, narrando os detalhes conhecidos e desconhecidos da carreira e vida em grupo e individual antes e depois da formação do BTS, recheado de notas para que ARMYs tenham todas as informações necessárias e QR codes para que entremos em um túnel do tempo, retornando aos vídeos e postagens antigas. Nesta resenha, comentarei apenas o primeiro capítulo, os próximos serão postados de acordo com a minha leitura, pois cada parte é densa e contém muitas informações. Comecemos então. 

O primeiro capítulo é intitulado Seul, capital da Coreia do Sul e cidade onde o grupo foi formado, é separado em 10 curtos subcapítulos, onde há os pontos de vista de cada um sobre a sua chegada no lugar desconhecido, além de como foram selecionados pela companhia e seus primeiros contatos uns com os outros e o período como trainee.

“13-20” começa com Myeongseok Kang narrando o caminho até o primeiro dormitório do grupo localizado no número que dá título ao subcapítulo em Gangnam-gu, Seul, e a dificuldade de alguém que não tem conhecimento do local de encontrar o endereço, como Jung Hoseok(J-Hope), que se perdeu ao chegar na cidade na véspera do natal de 2010 e encontrou Min Yoongi(SUGA) de cueca em um dormitório cheio de rapazes e bagunça.

“Big Hit Entertainment” conta sobre a experiência de SUGA ao chegar no dormitório, sua relação com a música antes de ser selecionado e como foi para a companhia.

Em “Antro do rap” é a vez de Kim Namjoon(RM) contar sua vivência, sendo ele o primeiro integrante a entrar e líder do grupo, assim conhecemos um pouco mais sobre suas influências e como entrou em contato com o Hip Hop.

“Segunda Temporada” faz referência a entrada de Jeon Jungkook, o primeiro integrante da vocal line, sua entrada no dormitório foi o prenúncio da mudança no grupo. Através dele vemos como o membro mais novo fora influenciado pelos mais velhos tanto em sua personalidade, forma de agir, mas também como artista, cantor e músico. É neste subcapítulo que, novamente, Jungkook nos conta como entrou na Big Hit Entertainment por conta de seu líder, Kim Namjoon.

“Cada um em sua posição” é a visão de Kim Taehyung(V) em sua chegada conturbada, revelando que ele e seu pai foram enganados pelo taxista, além de como ele, assim como Jungkook, já viam potencial na rap line do grupo. Também é a perspectiva de Park Jimin chegando em Seul, este que também sofreu um golpe do taxista, junto com seu encontro com J-Hope, que o buscou para levá-lo para o dormitório.

Em “A vida no dormitório trainee”, Kim Seokjin(Jin) entra em cena contando sobre como fora enganado pela companhia com uma carreira dupla de cantor e ator, além de sua experiência na fazenda de alguns familiares onde cultivou morangos e melões. Também nos conta sobre sua perspectiva em relação aos outros integrantes, à bagunça no dormitório e sua função para tentar organizar um pouco as tarefas domésticas.

“Escola de hip-hop”, se aproximando da data de debut, e agora com todos os integrantes da formação final, avançam para o próximo passo: fazer com que a vocal line tenha o mesmo amor pelo estilo musical que a rap line, assim, referenciando o filme “Escola do Rock”, Myeongseok Kang conta como RM fez o papel de Jack Black e fazia listas para que os outros membros ouvissem e se familiarizassem com o Hip Hop. 

“A batalha dos dançarinos”, se RM foi o professor de Hip Hop para os outros, J-Hope foi o de dança, há um pouco da história dos grupos de idols na Coreia e sua “alta performance”, a qual o BTS ficou bem conhecido, para isso, foi necessário que SUGA, RM, Jin, Jungkook e V entrassem em contato com a dança, já que somente Jimin e J-Hope dançavam antes de entrarem no grupo.

Em “Mundos em colisão”, somos imersos na parte obscura da era de trainees do BTS, com seus medos e angústias sobre o futuro, perguntando se conseguiriam debutar ou se a empresa faliria, é neste subcapítulo que SUGA conta sobre seu acidente durante uma das entregas, ao qual resultou na cirurgia anos depois e em sua menção no MV de “Amygdala”(2023)

Por fim, “E vocês?” é o último subcapítulo. Nele, a relação deles um com o outro é o foco, contando como a sinergia tão forte entre eles fora construída.

A leitura foi bem emocionante, ler com mais detalhes sobre esse período me deixou um pouco triste por eles terem passado pelas dificuldades, ri com as falas deles e fiquei feliz que eles não desistiram. O Jin e o J-Hope reclamando da bagunça dos meninos, eles falando da primeira vez que viram os outros, a primeira fala sendo a do J-Hope dizendo que estava perdido e até mesmo a indignação do V e do Jimin por terem sido enganados pelos taxistas foi muito engraçado.

Para aqueles que amam e/ou pretendem conhecer um pouco mais da história do BTS e compreender o caminho perseguido antes de se tornarem um sucesso mundial estrondoso, é um ótimo investimento. Assim, o primeiro capítulo abrangeu o período da chegada dos integrantes até o pré-debut do grupo, junto aos QR codes, espalhados pelas páginas do livro, que nos levaram às postagens antigas, vivendo o período junto com a leitura.

O Segundo capítulo é chamado “Por que existimos” e retrata a época do debut até Danger, então sei que vou sentir raiva novamente sobre o que eles passaram, mas isso fica para a resenha do capítulo 2.
