Hello everybody!! It's been a while. I really miss all of you and the sims 🥺 I'm sorry I haven't been here lately. I was busy with work and trying to change-decorate the rooms in my house. During this time, I couldn't follow the sims news and my simmer friends' gameplays :,(( I want to catch up with everything. Also, one of my birds injured its wing and got sick. I was taking care of her. They said she had muscle loss and bone thinning due to egg laying so long-term treatment was started. It's going well for now, anyway.

Close to a year and four rewrites later, I present to you...
Stem's Thoughts on the Game Design of Harvest Moon on SNES

I’m not going to lie, if you don’t like farming sims, you won’t like this one. At their core, every farming sim (at least in the rpg genre) is nearly identical, and that’s because of this game. In a way, I might dare to say that Harvest Moon for the SNES is the perfect farming sim because it has every one of the usual elements in their most simplified form and it just works straight from the get-go. It works so well in fact, that after this game came out in 1996, four more entries to the series were released before the year 2000.
If you are someone who does like farming sims, I can’t recommend this game enough. It’s simple and to the point, with a fast pace and enough random events and points of intrigue that the game kept me relatively engaged for my whole playthrough.
Also, by nature of this being the first game and therefore hard to cover concisely and by nature of taking so long to write this... it's long as hell! Enjoy! :) <3
I can’t say my appreciation of this game doesn’t come with a few caveats. I’ve intermittently played HM games all my life, starting with the GameBoy port (GB1) all the way to Pioneers of Olive Town, so while I don’t know exactly how the series has evolved, I’ve seen it at some of its earliest and at its latest. My vague childhood memories of GB1 (a game I didn’t own and didn’t play much of) were that it was pretty sparse and bland, so knowing that this original game was allegedly the same thing but with a little more content, I was expecting the bare minimum. I was prepared to never even be able to leave my farm, but the first thing the game did was shuttle me off to the nearby town and blocked the exit until I talked to everyone there.

You learn everything you need to know about the game right here at the beginning; Firstly, that this town is small as all hell and has hardly anyone in it aside from the five girls you can marry and their immediate family members. The next thing you’ll learn is that there’s a fence on your farm, and you need to be taking care of that. Of the few repetitive lines of dialogue any given person in town has to share with you on any given day, a fair amount are devoted to reminding you to fix your fence, to make sure it’s in good repair. There was just a big storm so watch out! Remember to check it every day! Are you chopping enough wood? Because you’ll need it for that fence!
I’m being dramatic of course, you aren’t reminded about it that much, though the thin variation of dialogue means it comes up a lot. The emphasis on your fence does exist, and it isn’t for nothing: while it doesn’t matter as much if all you do is grow crops– if you keep animals, the game tells you that the ideal thing to do for yours and the animal’s happiness is to put the animals outside to graze. Animal feed bought from the livestock shop will keep them fed, but it's nothing compared to fresh grass grown on your farm. You can’t even buy animals without a certain amount of grass planted! And sure, you can cut the grass to store for later, but it’s at its best straight out of the ground. However, the way the game is programmed, the animals only eat when the day rolls over, so putting animals outside for the day and taking them in at night isn’t an option, and on top of that, there’s things that come out at night that can hurt your animals. This is where your fence comes in.

The Utility of Fences
At the entrance to your farm is a cluster of buildings: your house, a small lumber shed, a barn, coop, and silo, a tool shed, and an old, dried up well. Just barely surrounding all of these is a little wooden fence that looks more like a row of upright logs than anything else. Despite this farm having presumably been abandoned, the fence is in perfect repair. You’ll quickly discover that the fence as it is won’t work out; there’s hardly space to plant anything within it, and with the well dried up, you’re forced to hop it to get to a water source to fill up your watering can. It’s pretty clear that you’ll need to expand your fence, and it’s easy to do with all of the tree stumps littering the massive field that it’s blocking off. 
On top of needing to expand the range of your fence, the individual planks eventually will rot away and leave useless stumps. They show up more frequently after rain or a large storm. The posts don’t rot away completely so they have to be manually removed, but replacing them is as simple as smashing the old post with a hammer or ax and popping a new post in its place. It becomes a very natural part of your daily routine to run a lap around the farm’s perimeter before you go to bed to make sure everything looks safe and secure. It’s a good way to ensure your animals are put away and debris is cleared out, too! It slotted very nicely into my daily schedule until a certain point.

With how much time you have to spend hopping over the logs to get to the rest of the area too large to fence in, you might be tempted to leave one out of place for easier traversal. When night comes, it’s clear why that would be a mistake. Sometimes when you go to bed, you’ll hear your dog barking. It’s a small detail, one that took me a long time to notice because I didn’t always play with the sound on. There are wild dogs that prowl around the wilderness surrounding your farm, and only at night do they dare to come close. Your dog, if left outside, isn't able to do anything other than warn you of their presence if they show up. There’s nothing to notice during the daytime if it happens, unless you happened to leave one of your animals outside. There was one night that I left my chickens outside, having thought my fence was in perfect order and repair. I went to bed and heard the dog barking, followed by a horrible crunch. When I went out in the morning, I saw where my chicken had been before, it had been replaced by a pile of feathers. On the north side of my farm was a rotted fence post I’d failed to fix. 
The Reality of Fences
After losing my chicken, a cluster of pixels on my screen it may have been, I didn’t feel comfortable leaving my animals outside. I didn’t want to take a risk again, the sound and sight of feathers was upsetting enough. On a more logical note, the chickens didn’t even lay eggs if left outside so there was no value in it. Cows were a pain to put back inside the barn too, because of some silliness with the game’s collision. As much of a disappointment as it was to not have my animals roam around, it was just easier. At the time, I was focusing on upgrading my house anyways, so I didn’t have time to take care of my animals outside where time would pass when I could use that time gathering wood, and everything I had was being saved up for the house so I didn’t have any extra materials to repair my fence with. My fence was all rotting away. Because it was inconvenient for getting to my crops, I started smashing all the old posts as they went, too. That’s when I noticed something: the wild dog wasn’t coming anymore.

I didn’t pay much attention to it until I was looking up a completely different mechanic and discovered a forum explaining how the fences were broken. Rotted posts attracted the wild dog, they said. It didn’t matter if you had gaps in your fence, or even a fence at all–in fact no fence was the best kind to have because the mere existence of posts that could rot was a liability. 
I was hesitant at first to test this concept, after all there wasn’t much I could gain from it. My chickens wouldn’t lay outside, and my cows would be too challenging to get back in if the forecast called for rain. The thing that got me to finally try it was when I was trying to hatch more chickens. My coop felt like a nightmare to navigate due to its current population. I wanted less animals inside that I had to feed, so I threw a couple chicks outside–they weren’t laying yet anyways. Lo and behold, the dog didn’t come. More days passed and more animals were left outside, and it never came. My fence had rotted until there was nothing left at all. No dogs could ever come to my farm again. And I realized that the game’s own insistence on its mechanics was all a lie.
How You’re Told To Play - How The Game Lies
Of course, my animals didn’t stay outside. For a minute it was fun having a crowd of cows milling about while I tended to my crops, but letting them wander free and uninhibited made it impossible to find and milk all of them without any trouble, and there were the rainy days to watch out for. After the novelty wore off, they went back inside and stayed there. The thing is, that didn’t make a single bit of difference in how much they liked me compared to how they were living in the barn. On top of that, they didn’t seem to care whether I was feeding them grass or store-bought food either, though I mostly stuck to the grasses since they were cheaper and easier to get. Nothing about how I was told to care for animals really mattered past feeding them every day, petting it and maybe brushing it, if it was a cow.

It gets worse. The most basic aspect of the game is the fact that time passes. The story takes place over 2 and a half years, running through each day until the end, and these days last from 6AM to 6PM according to the game’s own internal time setting. After 6PM, all of the shops aside from the bar will close and you lose the ability to sell anything as you’re told it would rot in the shipping bin overnight, so there’s nothing to do but sleep until the next day. Issue with this is that when the days stop at 6PM… they just stop. Time doesn’t flow anymore. The game doesn’t give you any kind of clock to know the exact time it is until after you’ve upgraded your house, so all you have to go by before that is the color of the environment and whether or not your character has played an animation to eat something (you’re automatically fed when you wake up, at noon, and at night). I discovered this because I was curious if I could actually see the wild dog by staying out, and left the game running for probably 20 minutes in real life only for nothing to happen. Because of the time freeze, the time after 6PM actually becomes really valuable for farm logistics. You can’t sell anything, no, but you can pull up all the weeds on the farm, water your crops, fix your fences, feed and care for animals if you hadn’t already, and harvest wood for fences and house upgrades which would have taken a lot of valuable time to get during shipping-hours. The only thing that gets in the way of doing all that is you running out of energy.
Your energy is what allows you to use your farming equipment like your ax or watering can. Running out of it doesn’t mean you fall unconscious or anything, but your character will play an animation of them stumbling over and will fail to use any tools. The most obvious fix to this is to simply go to bed, as sleeping gives you a full recharge. You can also, however, recharge it by going to the hot spring on the mountain, or by eating food bought at the restaurant in town or foraged for in the forest. You can’t tell easily how much is refilled, as there’s no visual indicator like a health bar, but you’re able to eat more than once, and jumping into the hot spring seems to count whether you did it or not more than how much time you spend in there, so you can hop in and out a couple of times and call it good.

Individually, time freezing at 6PM and energy being endlessly replenishable aren’t bad things. Even together, they’re not the worst. Having free time to focus on profitless chores is nice, and I think it’s important to be able to replenish your energy in case you have a limited amount of time to do things like for example, cut all of your grass before winter kills it. What makes an exploit out of these is the fact that the resources in the forest will never run out. Every time you re-enter the forest, all forage items and tree stumps are respawned. The infinite amount of forage makes for infinite energy refills, and could also make for an incredible money exploit if you didn’t have a very limited amount of time to ship things. You don’t have a limited amount of time to cut up tree stumps though. If you wanted to, you could run up to the forest after 6PM, chop every stump, then simply reload the area, and everything’s back. You can get all of the wood you would ever need to fully upgrade your house in one night. It’s a bit of a grind to do all at once, but it’s a grind you’d be doing over time anyways. It’s not the worst exploit in the world, since you still need money to pay for the house upgrade, but arguably because of how you have to focus your energy elsewhere for most of the game, the wood is the harder thing to get. Additionally, when the game has very little to do in both fall and winter due to the lack of crops, this exploit takes away just about any reason to play those two seasons other than to take care of animals. It’s an optional exploit of course–as all exploits are–but once you learn about it, it’s hard to resist the desire to get the grind out of the way all at once and mess up the pacing of the game.

The Charm of the Game
Learning that the fences were completely broken as a mechanic was a huge disappointment for me. From the moment I got a grasp on how the game was supposed to work, I wanted to eventually surround my whole field with fencing and keep my animals outside so I would have some life on my farm while I worked. I didn’t just want this, I was excited for it! This was something I’d never done in a farming sim that didn’t already manage putting animals in and out for you like Stardew Valley or newer Story of Seasons games do. My routine is always the same: I go into the barn and coop to tend to each of my animals, I take care of my crops outside, then run straight to town to talk to everyone, and go to bed. The change in routine that would come from taking care of the animals outside and patrolling the fence every night felt fresh to me. It made me feel that even though this was the first game of its kind, it was different and required new things of me. But in the end, I played it exactly the same.
Harvest Moon is still very different from all of the games that followed it, though. In many ways, it’s because it has less “stuff” in it– both in terms of items and things you have to do. But I wouldn’t say that it feels incomplete. Harvest Moon runs over the course of 2 and a half years before your work is evaluated. Until that happens, you have the ability to farm four different crops, you can raise both cows and chickens, you can upgrade your house to have more features, upgrade your working tools, build relationships with the townspeople to a small extent, go to town festivals that happen each year, and you can get married to one of the five girls living in town with whom you can have up to two children. Everything that you would come to expect as a fan of games like this is already here from the very first iteration. The most notable lack this game has, and one that seems to be completely unique to this game, is that there aren’t any crops in the fall or winter, which means that unless you have animals, there’s a whole half of the year that you don’t have anything to do. The game is clearly aware of this though, because in an average playthrough, this is where you’ll start to run into the story events.

There isn’t much of an overarching story in the game, past the general concept that you’ve run away from home to work on an abandoned farm. The conclusion rests on how good of a job you actually do. In between those two points are smaller events, usually tied to when you get tool upgrades or special ones for each of the romantic interests. The first event you’re likely to run into happens on the very last day of summer, where one of the woodsmen comes to your house in the morning to ask if you’re okay because he heard a huge crash at night and you should check your farm. What I found was that a tree in my field had fallen over, and its remaining stump had a big empty hole in it. When I inspected the stump, I was suddenly underground in a cave filled with loud and industrious music, and I was faced with two, little green people–Harvest Sprites, though I don’t know if they’re called that yet here. One asked me if my scythe worked well, and when I said yes, told me that they had made it and that I should check my shed tomorrow for a better one. Other tool upgrades are obtained in similar fashion; one comes from feeding a starving sprite a mushroom and another comes from another hole in the farm opening up to reveal another part of the cave system that has a couple of hints on how to unlock other things.

The events for romantic interests happen at less scripted times, as they’re tied to how strong your relationship is with each girl. Each girl only has one event, and it only triggers when your relationship is high enough that you would ask her to marry you. The events usually take up a whole day, and don’t necessarily add much to each character. Ellen’s revolves around how she’s no good at keeping pets– something established on your second day at the farm when you get your dog from her, Eve’s hammers in her fraught relationship with her grandpa, and Ann’s is about losing the chicken weathervane, or “weathercock” which sits on the roof of her workshop and goes missing every time there’s a storm. Conversely, Nina and Maria’s scenes bring up entirely new events that bring up a number of questions while providing no answers. Nina disappears while looking for a medicinal plant because her mother is apparently sick, and Maria vanishes for days until you find her hiding away with the woodsmen for some reason. All of these events, whether they share new information or not, manage to add some greatly appreciated depth to each character by giving them more room to speak and be sincere than their short and repetitive day-to-day dialogues do.

The dialogue in this game is simple, to the point, and sparse– probably because there was only so much memory that could be reserved for approximately 15 people who all have multiple lines of dialogue, and only so much money to pay someone to write more. There is simple dialogue that doesn’t tell you much more than “hello, how are you” would, more dialogue that I’d label as tutorial text, and a few lines that I truthfully couldn’t understand well because of the sub-par translation this game received for english. The dialogue that exists to inform the world really manages to create a unique vibe though. Nina’s dialogue, almost always about plants, goes into forays about how they’re creatures with wills to live, too. Ellen’s uncle who runs the ranch shop tells you that it’s much better to feed your animals fresh grass if you try to buy any from his store, and if you decline to purchase he laughs as if he’s won something. There’s even dialogue referencing the silent player! Multiple lines exist to comment on him not paying attention, and inspection prompts have people telling you not to touch something rather than being an item description. It was the last thing I expected, to get the same level of personality out of the main character as I did from each of the girls, albeit very subtly. He went from a kind of nothing, self-insert into being what I perceive to be a hyperactive boy, akin to a border collie who was let out into a field of sheep for the first time–the exact kind of person crazy enough to take on an abandoned farm and succeed.

It’s these short little character details that bring life into the game. Each day, you’ll really only see one line of dialogue from each character, be it new or old, with that dialogue usually only changing if there’s a change in season or festival coming up. The repetitive, pretty mindless routine of the game can turn into a sort of meditation if you let it, where you spend your time working thinking about the folks in town and what they had to say to you the previous day. The developers took this concept in stride and gave the side characters loads of dialogue about life, about God and religion, and about… very basic morals, but morals nonetheless. It’s a children’s game after all. When you take the thoughts, questions and prompts the characters give you back to the farm to do your long and tedious routine, you have to ask yourself– what are you working so hard for? For the feeling of accomplishment? Recognition from your peers? For the sake of some higher power, if you worship one? For me personally, it was to write this essay, but it was also for a good grade on the high score screen at the end, so to be honest a lot of this stuff was lost on me until just now when I was reviewing the game to get screenshots.

Setting The Standard - Why You Should Play HM SNES
You may read all of this and still think, well, it doesn’t sound like the game has much in it. And you would be right, it’s a very small game, but it’s also extremely quick. On average, my days only lasted about three minutes of real life time. Everything flew by, and I think I finished the game in 20 hours or less. I barely got a chance to notice that there wasn’t much going on because every second of my day was spent busy doing something, and when I wasn’t busy, the break was appreciated. I didn’t start to run out of things to do until I was finished with the second year, and when I looked up what I needed to do to get a decent ending, I was already most of the way there. It was easy to push through those last two seasons to get to the end, and it was so, so worth it. 
As I mentioned earlier, the game ends with a high score screen, meaning it has to track all of your accomplishments. These include, but are not limited to: the number of things you ship, number of each crop you grow, number of animals you have and how much they like you, how upgraded your house is, who you married, how much all of the girls in town like you if you didn't get married, how many kids you have (which basically equates to how long you were married), your happiness score (increased by going to festivals and decreased by having animals die), and how many times you’ve pet your dog. In addition to these being tallied up and presented to you, you get special cutscenes not just for each one of these accomplishments, but additional ones for if you managed to do even better! I got a cutscene for having a cow, followed by one for having lots of cows, followed by yet another for having cows that loved me! Watching them play one after the other felt like taking a victory lap even without getting the best possible result. Seeing all of my numbers come up at the end made me want to try again to actually get those other cutscenes, not to get to see them, they’re so easy to find on Youtube, but because the game made it feel like an accomplishment! If I weren’t following this game up by immediately playing its GameBoy port, I absolutely would have started a new file right away. I’ve been playing the Harvest Moon series since I was a little kid and this was the first time I’d actually managed to beat one of these games. I struggle to think the finale of any game following this will feel as good as this one did.

I started writing this whole thing about the fences because it was an easy and silly entry point to get into my core issue with the game, and so I could have an opportunity to dig into game mechanics and the way the knowledge you have of them will completely alter your playstyle, because that’s all fun and interesting for me to talk about. Another reason why I focused on that was because it was near impossible for me to pick any kind of focus point when talking about this game. After all, I’m trying to study a whole series of games that spans multiple decades, and this is not only the first game in that series, but a game that created the whole genre of farming sims and defined that genre so thoroughly that you can see its DNA in every single game that followed.
 I didn’t expect much to come out of my experience with this game. My expectations for it before I even picked it up were that it was going to be basically featureless, as informed by my experience with one of the first games I ever played as a child, Harvest Moon GB, which I will get into next. This game was not that at all. I think that everything it did manage to get working right came together just about perfectly. Harvest Moon is exactly what it wanted to be, and where it wasn’t, it lied about how it worked to try and make you play the correct way anyways. When I believed that lie, my time playing was even more enjoyable. Maybe if farming worked just a little bit more like how you’re told it’s supposed to, and if there was just a little bit more story, those would cover the things I felt wanting for the most. But maybe a little flexibility and ambiguity is a good thing. Maybe actually maintaining a fence is just too hard, and maybe if the girls were more fleshed out, I wouldn’t be able to enjoy filling in their gaps in my head.
There are many more things I could say and wanted to say about this game, but this has grown far too long already so I'm cutting myself off here. I'm sure my later entries aren't going to get near this length. If you managed to get to this point, thank you so much for reading!

honestly i'm glad they turned up the snark in this video, people need to calm down a bit with their opinions on digital people created for a goofy fun video, i admittedly don't play the sims so idk if they've committed any game sins, but i genuinely DO NOT understand where all the hateration has been coming from, i'm being so real when i say It's Just A Game
LMAO no okay so like i know MOST of it isn't that deep but i have seen a few people get like, genuinely upset by it. usually cause they've logged 8000 hours in the sims and take it very seriously, which is fine! but like, you just have to accept that dan and phil are not going to do that. i agree with some of the criticism they get but most of it i'm like... idk i don't want dan and phil to play perfectly lol, there's a reason i don't watch any sims youtubers and it's because that shit is sooooo boring i'm sorry. if you like it, cool! watch the dedicated simmers. dan and phil's sims series is for plot and goofs, you kinda just have to accept that. again, there are Some things that get on my nerves as well like i've played sims since the first one and while i'm not as dedicated as some of you i do know the games fairly well, but for the most part i appreciate that dnp's game is kinda shit. it's what makes it fun, y'know? and as far as the fashion goes, i just want to be able to recognise the characters. like dab's hair was upsetting because i didn't recognise him anymore, but most of it wasn't that deep. i'm glad they rectified some of it but i don't get why people want all their sims to be fashionistas like don't you want any charm at all in this series

It involves randomized Endbringer attacks. By default they’re fairly more common than they are in real life, happening maybe once every ten in-game years, but if you look at read_me.txt in the downloads I’ve enclosed information on how to alter the probability and how to trigger specific Endbringers as well as how to make them easier or harder to defeat. Besides that I also included CC and a few Easter eggs that won't affect your gameplay.

Then, moving further down the road, is this trailer owned by the Nix family. As you can see, it's nice. As in, these sims take pride in their home.

Anyway, they're a bunch of werewolves who settled here after their last neighborhood made them feel unwelcome because of their nocturnal activities. I also gave them a dog - who darted off when I took these pictures. Afterall, what's a family of werewolves without a pet dog?
Then I moved down by the river. There's a little 20x20 lot that I wanted to use for a sim that I made for this world. And luckily for me, the lovely @kapii created and shared a little starter home the other day that was perfect for this spot. The original comes on a 15x15 plot of land - which was just perfect for me. So, thank yo, @kapii.

I did change out the siding - because I wanted a log cabin for this plot of land. And I gave my sim a wood-burning stove, but otherwise I used it as it was created.

And here's the sim I moved in. I gave him some serial-killer traits - plus the loner one. I need to find him a hatchet or maybe a bloody knife. Right now, he has NO friends. I usually use MasterController to establish relationships in new towns, but I'm curious to see which sims will cozy up to him.

Then, across the river, I placed this cabin that I think I got from Mod the Sims. (Been a while since I downloaded it). Anyway, I moved the sims that were living in that modern house to this one. The Pok family.

So I've been listening to podcasts again and I wish someone had done this for me when I started out, so let's sum up and describe some podcasts, shall we?

The Age of Sims 2.8- Part 13 - “You're Gloria…Right?"
The morning after started like most mornings except for the buzzing that seemed to be coming from Noah's nose. He wasn't exactly sick, but he readily took the medicine his uncle had on hand for him while Gloria offered to help.
As always, William had it under control -- telling her to take a breath of much fresher air, not even Oasis Springs had to offer. And that she did, wandering farther than she should have, but not far enough to be literally lost in the woods.
It was then that he appeared suddenly to block her bath forward, but not threatening enough to make her turn around and go back the other way.
"Gloria, right?" His tone was rough as usual, "David." He offered his name.
She nodded, "Good morning… David."
"What are you doing out here? Thought I saw my brother back there being Mr. Mom."
"Noah seems to be sick… at least I think so." She offered, "William seems to think it's nothing."
"He's probably right… that brother of mine is more like Mary Poppins than Rambo… unfortunately…" He fell in to a grumble, "Why don't we take a little break and have a chat?"
She was hesistent as she wasn't sure how she should read him or how she should read his suggestion. Why they should have a little chat was beyond her, but she also did not want to appear rude.
"There's a place to sit right over there." He stretched his neck and nodded.
When they reached the log that seemed to be a million miles away, though it was hardly more than five steps away from them, he insisted she take a seat first.
"Ladies first." He said, sounding like a gentlemen.
When she sat down she couldn't help, but take him standing and looking at her like he was towering over her. When he finally sat, he didn't entirely lose his nerve… he just didn't know how to begin the conversation he shouldn't try to have in the first place.
"So -- Gloria… how'd you meet my brother?"
She opened her mouth to only close it as she suddenly wondered what was about to take place as well as wondering why she was in such a situation in the first place. She hadn't awoken in a bad mood and she wasn't sure she was exactly in one at the moment, but the question sounded like it shouldn't have been asked in the first place as she had a thought on how his brother should have already known the answer because William should have told him in the first place.
"I mean -- did you two just walk past each other in the streets or…"
It was the way that he said 'streets' that sounded like he was taking shots at her, assuming where she came from and who she was because of it. It was a feeling she hadn't felt in some time and it was unfortunate that it was coming from someone like him.
It didn't help matters that that was exactly how they met each other, but she chose not to tell him that making her realize that when faced with someone like him… someone that looked like him, she almost fell right back into old patterns like the safest thing to do was to not offer more information than was needed and to ultimately -- lie.
And even so -- that she did. She fell right back into old patterns.
"We met through a friend."
"Really?"
She nodded.
"Scientist friend? Doctor friend?"
"She's a writer." She said, keeping up apperances, "You know how much William loves books."
"Couldn't forget that even if I tried -- and trust me, I've tried." He cleared his throat as he shook his head, "His entire life has come out of a book, I swear…" He skipped a beat, "Until now… obviously."
"So -- it all started with a writer… was it one of those book signing event sort of a thing or a book club? It must have been a book club."
She nodded, not giving an exact answer, while hoping that the subject matter changed -- but she knew that would be impossible unless she spoke up.
"How do you like it here in Granite Falls?"
He shrugged, showing that he didn't think much of it. "Not one for fishing despite the fact I could get in the water and choke the life out of them with my bare hands." His confidence was solid as a rock, "Can't say much for the birds either -- all they do is chirp your goddamned ear off… rather be somewhere where I can have a beer in one hand and a woman in another if I'm completely honest."
She opened her mouth to say something, but realized she didn't know what to say.
"What kind of books does this so called writer friend of yours and my brother's exactly write?"
"All kinds." She said after letting go of her breath she didn't even know she was holding.
"Guess four-eyes back there has broadened his horizons." He looked into the distance for a second, "You know, I always thought he had moved away from books."
"I'm glad he didn't." She said while letting his opinion of William get to her because as much as he had the right to as his brother -- someone one that knew him far more and longer than she had, he was still insulting a person she cared for.

"Suppose so…" He took a glance at her in a way that made her wonder what it meant, "Ever met anyone like my brother before?"
She waited before she shook her head, then spoke, "Sometimes you only meet a certain someone once."
"Wow." He tone was teasing, "Sounds like love--"
"No--"
"No?"
She felt herself inwardly shrink back, but she hadn't moved an inch on the outside.
He shrugged as he studied her closely, "Sounds a whole lot like it…" His tone almost sounded like a bit of a song at that moment. "Your first?"
She swallowed the lump that started to form in her throat as she struggled to find something to say even if it wasn't the right thing.
"No."
"You wanna know what I think?" He started as he physically could see her expressions start to change. "I think… there's a whole lot more to it than what you're saying. Cute story, but -- there's got to be more to it. A writer friend or not. A book signing or not… there's got to be more to this story." He raised his eyebrows, "Especially for my little brother not to mention you in the slightest."
"He said it's been years since you two spoke."
"YEARS?!" He exclaimed, then dialed it back as he realized it had been years. "Well -- suppose he's right. Last time I saw him he was traveling around with this co-worker of his." He thought back as a smile crossed his features, "And what a hell of a co-worker she turned out to be." He then looked back at her, "They were quite the pair -- so much so you probably wouldn't be here if it had all worked out, but my brother's not exactly the brightest bulb in the pack when it comes to women… so can't say I'm at all that suprised."
She knew who he was refering to though she hadn't met her and realized then that she never wanted to -- even by accident.
"No matter how many times I've tried to tell him over the years -- you meet a beauty with brains? You nail her right and then you keep her -- but what'd he do? Oh he nailed her alright -- all over many cities worldwide, but if he was any good at it… clearly he would have kept her… but where is she now? No where to be found." He shrugged, "But what do I know anyway, right?"
She immediately stood up as she suddenly found it hard to catch a breath she wasn't sure she couldn't find until it almost became hard to breathe.
"I…" She started as he stood up, "…should get back. I told William I wouldn't go far--"
"You're not so far, the cabin's just behind that row of trees."
"Yes, but I… should get back anyway--"
William's voice cut through the trees and even the sky like a knife -- or rather, a thunderclap.
Of course he told her to stay close while still getting fresh air while exploring Granite Falls, but what he didn't tell her was how she should stay away from his brother because he never actually thought his brother would go anywhere near her in the first place.
The tone he held when he shouted his brother's name made his older brother snicker while Gloria wondered it all meant after she couldn't get so many of his brother's words out of her head.

He watched them as they made their way over to him, all the while trying to keep himself as calm as he could.
By the time they reached him, David had fallen back a bit to watch their interactions before William pulled away to take a better look at her.
"What's up?"
"Nothing." She lied, continuing the track started on with his brother, "Ran into your… I ran into David while I went farther than I probably should have." She shrugged, "Sorry."
"That's okay. You didn't go too far…" He felt foolish then, "You can go anywhere you'd like, I just… don't want you getting lost."
"Real sweet, billy boy--"
"Shut up, David." He shot back, hating his brother for opening his mouth when he really didn't need to.
She lightly laughed, hoping that her nerves and also a series of other feelings couldn't be seen -- but the familiar eyes looking at her reminded her that she couldn't, or couldn't for long because he was as observant as he always had been -- if not, then more so.
If anything, she welcomed his brother's interuption.
"I think I want to… go back to the cabin. I'm a little tired from my flight." She said, rolling with lie after lie.
"Alright." He took her hand, "Come on, let's head back."

It had been a few hours since they all returned to the cabin. While Gloria went straight to the bathroom to get ready for bed, David retreated to the upstairs bedroom… buring himself inside the piles and piles of books William never seemed to find time to sort through.
The same books David could careless about, but also realizing that he didn't want to listen to his younger brother talk to him about things he honestly felt he didn't know a thing about.
In the kitchen William prepared a fish dinner with some of the fish he recently caught all the while trying to settle the rage inside of him that was on the verge of erupting.
He knew something was wrong. He could see it, he could smell it, and he could feel it -- the moment he caught them together. The way his brother's swagger reeked of confidence he could never master himself and how she moved almost like a robot he knew all so well considering his experience with crafting them for most of his adult life.
He had warned his brother before she arrived, but it was only met with his brother finding humor in his demands -- but he never thought he would actually challenge him the way he knew that he had.
She wasn't going to tell him anything -- he knew as much. Not until he started to insist and demand and there an argument would come to be all because she was trying to keep him stress free or as stress free as possible no matter how many times he told her it wasn't her job to do that -- Especially not about his brother who could give a literal shit about her or their relationship.
The sizzling from the frying pan wasn't even enough to stop the silence that had become deafening, but he kept at it… tried his best to make sure he did it just right or as best as he could, because focusing on what he was doing was a whole lot better than marching up the stairs and punching his brother right in the face.
This getaway to experience the mountains, the rivers, and the trees as a means to reduce his stress and give him and his brother a chance to fixed their strained relationship had officially turned to something no one could think to speak of…

Because it seems like it needs to be said...
First, this is going to be quite long, so my apologies in advance, but I think it is important to address and explain these things and there is simply no way to make it shorter.
Since over the past week, the same person who has been bad mouthing me since february 2023 (as already mentioned here: Goldie — In relation to this post: I know I've already...), apparently felt the need to dig up things from the past again (including old screenshots which funny enough have never been a secret to begin with), I feel like I might should elaborate a few things.
First things first: As already mentioned before, the whole thing started back in february 2023. At this time me and this person used to be mutuals and although we didn't interact much (just a few asks here and there etc.) the few interactions we had have always been positive.
Now some of you maybe know that around this time a certain pc game named Hogwarts Legacy was released and some people were posting about it, sharing their first impressions of the game, sharing screenshots etc. And for me who has been a fan of the Harry Potter franchise since childhood, those were interesting news - not because I wanted to buy or play said game, I'm not playing video games except for sometimes The Sims when I feel like it, but simply for the nostalgia it gave me. You know, I read the first HP book back when it came out in 1998, I was 8 years old at this time and I didn't like to read, I didn't like it at all. But then I read this book and it changed little me's opinion about books forever because I truly enjoyed it, so of course when the following books of the series came out, I read them as well, just like I watched all the movies (which back then was especially fun because just like everyone my age, I had the benefit of being the same age as the characters). So yeah, I think you can see why seeing the screenshots of the game felt nice and so it happened that I reblogged some of them, simply for the nostalgia. I didn't know back then that the author of HP (Joanne K. Rowling) was (and still is) engaging in very discriminatory behavior towards trans people, as I have never been on twitter (which as I learned later is apparently her number 1 platform to spread her harmful opinions) and I'm also not someone who keeps up to date with celebrity gossip, because that's simply not something I'm interested in.
So I had no idea and because of this I was very surprised and confused when shortly after reblogging the Hogwarts Legacy pictures, I received a very rude ask in which someone was demanding that I tag posts related to this game, claiming that it was "transphobic" and "antisemitic", as well as some insults directed at the author of HP. This ask was on anon, it was not signed in any way, nothing. Therefore I had no idea who sent it. All I knew was that this situation (receiving a rude anon like this) brought back bad memories because only a few months before I had a similar thing happening when an anti sent me an anon ask, demanding a nsfw tag for a slightly suggestive selfship post of mine and how me responding to it back then, resulted in being harassed for 5 days straight by antis. I didn't want something like this to happen again, so instead of answering the ask, I deleted it and made a short info post for my followers in which I asked them to please don't send me asks demanding specific tags for my posts/reblogs, and that if someone doesn't like the content on my blog, they could just unfollow and/or block me.
The next day when I logged into tumblr, I was basically greeted with a bitchy post from said mutual on my dash, complaining about me not answering their ask as well as about the info post I made instead, which was how I even found out that it was them who sent me the ask. Apparently they didn't thought I would see their post since back then, their selfship blog was a sideblog and so while they apparently blocked me on their main after reading my post, they forgot to block me on their sideblog as well and their bitch-post about me showed up on my dash. And now I made a stupid mistake, annoyed by their behavior, the rude ask, the public complaining about me, I reblogged their post and commented it with "Oh okay, now I know who the idiot in my inbox was" That was unnecessary and I shouldn't have done this, but right in this moment I wasn't thinking much of it, especially since I already wasn't in the best state of mind at this time due to other reasons (the situation with the antis mentioned above, a fallout with my best friend, as well as my late grandfather's death of cancer only two months before). Short: I wasn't doing well at all and I guess that's why I simply didn't have the patience for something like this on top of everything else. Of course that's not an excuse, but that's how it was and I won't pretend otherwise.
Either way, this little incident between me and this person would have been nothing more than exactly this - a little incident - if it was up to me. You know, something that might annoys you for a little moment, but then you shrug it off and move on. Little did I know that this was just the beginning of a much bigger issue. This user spent the rest of this day with making multiple bitch posts about me, freaking out way more than what would have been reasonable for this kind of situation and then a few days later they started their slander campaign against me, spreading rumors about me being a "transphobe" and "ableist" (the latter apparently because during our disagreement I said that if they freak out like this because of a picture of a castle and some landscapes, they probably got some bigger issues to work on), which resulted in people harassing and attacking me repeatedly, anons flooding my ask box with insults, calling me a "transphobe", a "terf", a "bitch" a "cunt", telling me I deserve to die, that I should kill myself etc. Let me tell you, it was no fun.
But I gotta be honest, I didn't made it better because since they kept bringing up HP / JK, acting like enjoying the franchise I grew up with was suddenly a crime - all of this without ever showing me any proof of their accusations against the author - I simply decided to react in a spiteful way by purposefully reblogging posts about not only Harry Potter, but also the author, fully convinced that she - the person who created this amazing story - would never engage in the kind of behavior those people were accusing her of. After all it goes against everything she wrote in her books....
So for the next weeks it kept going on like this - for every hate anon I received, I would reblog more posts about her, kinda as a big "F*ck you" towards the people harassing me. Then one day when I reblogged another post from a person expressing their support for JK, it happened that the op started to follow me and after a few interactions I followed back. A couple more interactions and he DM'ed me, started a conversation with me and for the first time since my fallout with my ex friend (more to this later), the thought of someone new trying to become friends with me didn't felt scaring to me. There was something about him I can't quite explain but it made me feel safe and comforted and so me and him became friends rather quickly and although I saw the red flags (they were hard to miss ngl) I ignored them, grateful to finally have someone around on this website again who was nice to me, someone who was there for me through this situation and who protected me, or so he said....
He started to openly attack people who would give me trouble or say something bad about me, which of course only made things worse and I asked him repeatedly not to do this, to just let it be but it always resulted in him either ignoring my words, or agreeing just to go right back to it 1 - 2 days later, always emphasizing that he was just "trying to protect me" which put me in a situation where I felt like I owed him something, so I started to make open excuses for his behavior, backing him up no matter what he said or did and just displaying my loyality to him since I knew that's what he expected from me. During this time, he would also target the ex mutual who had started the rumors that caused the whole mess in the first place a few times and because of the trouble I had to endure thanks to this person in the past, I was more than happy to join in, viewing it as some kind of "payback". I'm not proud of this, yet it happened and I would never deny it.
Things got really bad and of course our behavior only provoked the previous harassment I had to endure to escalate even more and at some point someone even made a whole blog about us, screenshoting our posts etc. This went on until one day my friend decided to write a public apology to the people he attacked during this time, to end this whole mess and make people leave the two of us alone.
From there on things finally improved, we parted ways one month later and another month later my ex friend @moss-selfship who couldn't be more different from him came back into my life and it was also him who, when I asked him about it, showed me actual proof for JK's harmful behavior, which was a very shocking and disappointing thing for me to see and of course, it led to me deleting everything I ever reblogged about her, as I'm not willing to support this woman in any way and I feel stupid and ashamed for ever doing so.😦 I also deleted every interaction with this former friend, as well as every other memory of this time, not to hide anything (as the ex mutual mentioned above was accusing me of lately) but simply because I don't want to have these things on my blog, since they were part of a very bad chapter of my life I don't want to have anything to do with anymore. Yet I never tried to pretend it didn't happen and I never would. The blog which was screenshoting all these things back then does still exist until this day and as you will see here, it was also where this person took the screenshots from when they tried to call me out about these old things a few days ago:
Just like they also decided to bring up the old fight between me and @moss-selfship to make distasteful comments about it, although this is something that's not only between us but also something we fixed and left behind us long ago

As you already know, I did apologize to this person months ago, with help from my dear friend @moss-selfship who was the one who reached out to them and back then they promised to them that they would stop messaging people to as they like to call it "warn" them of me, but they didn't. From february 2023 when me and them had this "tag disagreement" until this day they kept slandering me and yes it is slandering since the "Goldie is a transphobe" lie they keep clinging to, has never been true at all. Same goes for the accusation of me being ableist, as well as some other things they said.
I spent the whole past year trying to make up for my previous mistakes and working on myself, trying to be a better person but thanks to this person it never stopped being very hard to just having fun on here and enjoying interactions etc. as they would always keep seeking out people I was interacting with to badmouth me, but you already know this from the post linked at the very top of this post here, so there is no need to elaborate this any further.
The only thing I wanted to make clear here is that:
The things they tried to present as something new, are things that happened long ago.
They have never been a secret to begin with, as the "phantom blog" has always been there, freely accessible for everyone.
I never tried to deny them in any way and I never would.

so my phone screen has been kinda jacked up for a while and a few days ago i finally dropped it the final time, and i can no longer touch or see anything on the screen. it still turns on, but thats about it. and ive had to kinda work my life around this fact. for example, the only way im able to text people or contact my parents while at college right now is because i had preemptively connected google messages to my computer so i can still access it so long as my phone is on. i cant do any phone calls right now, and if something happens that logs me out of my bank on my pc i have no way to get back in since 2 factor auth is done on my phone. this is the case for a lot of my accounts actually, and a lot of the time you need to use a phone to just create an account and exist on the internet nowadays.
im kinda just now realizing how dependent one has to be on their phone to do really anything nowadays, theres a lot you just simply cant do without one. and these super important things are being made by companies for profit? intentionally designed to break down after x amount of time??
some phones lock your service provider to only one provider depending on where you get them. the fact that this is even an option kinda disgusts me, and also means i cant just plop my sim card into one of my older phones that i still have but stopped using. the reason i stopped using them was because they suddenly got really fucking slow and laggy after a random update and made it impossible to do anything on them

can we have someone make a phone thats designed to last more than 5 years please??? one that if i drop it 2 feet the screen doesnt crack, one that doesnt mysteriously start draining battery super fast one day?

“It’s called being diurnal, and based on this kids genetics, they probably won’t be.” Evie adds. “Honestly, we probably couldn’t have made better odds for a nocturnal kid if we’d planned it.”
Ben sticks his head out of the walk-in closet, which they’d been considering as an adjacent-but-separated baby room, with a hurt look on his face. “Hey, I resent that. I sleep.” 
“Mhm,” Evie hums. “When?” 
“At night.” 
“During what hours, babe? Given the chance to sleep whenever you want.” 
Ben goes delightfully red when he’s embarrassed. Like a little ripe tomato. 
“Normal ones?” he offers, “Very normal and respectable ones?” 
“Lies!” Evie says delightedly. “You were awake until three am the last time we had a weekend off. I’ve seen your game stats, and I know how long you were playing the sims.” 
Ben groans, and knocks his head into a wall. “I’m going to unfriend you on stream if you’re going to use your friend code powers for evil.”
Evie cackles. “You can try, but I’ll log into your computer while you’re asleep and share them again. There’s no way to hide your sims addiction from your loving wife.” 
There’s a thud from the kitchen area. “I’ll hide your game stats!” Carlos calls. “But you have to help me raise our kid nocturnally!” 
“No deal! They’ve got to be functional in regular society!” 
Carlos bounces back into the bedroom area. “Coffee is the answer. Kids love coffee. It’s how they have so much energy.” 
“I don’t think we can give coffee to an infant,” Ben says, but his expression looks suspiciously like he’s considering it. “That feels….wrong.” 
“Start ‘em out with mostly milk, build up to it. It’ll be fine.” 
“I feel like anything you say with this much confidence has got to be wrong.” Ben says slowly, which is probably the right thing to think, or whatever. It’s not like any of them have ever had parents who actually cared enough to pay attention to what they were drinking. “I feel like I’m going to look in one of the parenting books and it’s going to say that any drip of coffee that passes a child’s lips before ten is basically a death sentence.” 
“The parenting books actually say fifteen,” Evie adds. “And it’s not a death sentence, just child abuse.” 
“Fuck off.” Carlos says, sharp, like it’s a reflex. “No it’s not.” 
“I was drinking espresso before I turned ten.” Mal says. She’s pretty sure the coffee isn’t the part of her childhood that was abusive, but Auradon has different standards. “I’m fine.” 
“Yeah, me too.” Jay adds. 
“Don’t do this—“ Evie starts. “No—“ 
“I don’t think the coffee was actually the part of my childhood that was abusive. I think it was the way my dad hit me, actually.” Ben says thoughtfully. They don’t often give him the chance to join in when they get into the shitty parts of their childhoods, so this is actually good. It’s a bonding experience, and Mal should swallow down the part of her that wants to rip king Beast’s head off. 
“I think the fact that my mom wouldn’t give me coffee was more abusive than the other stuff.” Carlos chimes in. 
“No, that’s definitely wrong.” Evie says firmly, “because if you’re not claiming child abuse it means the rest of us can’t either. I’m pretty sure that giving your tiny child chemical burns is more abusive than denying them coffee, and while I’m not an expert, I am willing to go to court over this if you’d like.” 
“I think your mom starving you was pretty bad. You don’t have to have the same problems to count as abused.” 
“I know that, but it’s more the principle of the thing.” Evie says, frowning. “I feel guilty calling myself an abused child if you’re not doing the same thing.” 
“Solidarity.” Carlos says, nodding. 
“I suppose so,” Evie says doubtfully, “but really I think it’s because I came out so well-adjusted compared to the rest of you.”

This ask isn't directly for Wilbur or the blog, but rather the person who runs this. A bit of an ooc ask about world building and expanding this universe since I'm invested
Are we as the audience perceived as people in this universe watching this show/documentary about Utah at our homes, sending in questions via telephone. Or are we just random people that show up in the gas station and keep coming back one by one at random times to talk about the "Dabi cosplayer". (I'd like the imagine the second one; just a but of faceless people pressed up against the glass outside asking the weirdest questions. Fits the vibe)
Do you, the owner of this blog, have a part to play in the universe? Are you the director to the show, a main camera man, or something else.
The fanart that's made for this blog, I'd like to imagine it's—again—just faceless people running up and slapping drawings they make on the convince store windows and running off, leaving the producers and Wilbur with it. Stuff like that :]
Im gonna be honest I said I was gonna do author q&a today specifically so I could answer this ask because I feel weird just answering it willy-nilly
I tend to be... pretty bad at storytelling. I always get wayyy too into my own head, and things get so complicated to a degree where only I can understand whats going on, which is something im obviously trying very hard to avoid. However I don't wanna sacrifice the story I want to tell, so I'm just doing my best here.
One of the biggest limitations right now is that I'm just struggling to explain exactly how the world works/the translation between "Utah" and irl/us. The biggest ones are time and what exactly is being aired, because obviously it doesn't take one whole day to answer two questions, but I don't have the energy to answer more than two q's per day. And of course the 'film crew' arent actually filming Wilbur while he's sleeping or anything like that, but it's hard to tell the story I want to tell without having scenes like that. Im hoping that things will get smoother as we go, but for now I've just been making it so that episodes that dont have 'transcript's in them aren't filmed (or have "artist rendition" notes), and lets say that even though its been over a month of answering questions for us, it's only been two or three weeks for wilbur.
As for what you guys are, you're viewers who are calling in from home! Kinda like a radio show. No one is physically showing up to the store or his house (that would be really funny though). I did have some scrapped ideas that I may bring back later about the film crew, but for now "they" dont have any deeper place in the story. I'm the camera man, I guess! I've been imagining it as just some guy with a camera in one hand, a headset to listen to calls, and a little paper pad to write down answers.

I was typing out the whole story and reasoning behind the pictures I chose but it was getting way too long (because I ended up going down a rabbit hole). Basically I found an old blog from 2010 where a girl had posted a picture of her room, it was a very positive post so I didn't think it would be offensive to use it (also there's a comment from 2016 on the blog post asking if the image can be used as reference, no reply, the author of the blog has not logged in for years). The bathroom was made in the Sims 4/I used pictures of my own dorm bathroom

Idc if im the asshole tbh but I think this is funny. I (15F) am a hero intern for this fairly big company, think superhuman secret society typa shit.
The thing is because I'm more of a "in the chair" hero, I spend a fair amount of time in the Headquarter's lab. My work load swings between nothing to fucking do and non-stop crisis mode.
Somedays I literally can't afford to take normal breaks and go home This facility, despite all the money we get, is held together with a paperclip cyber-security wise (and security wise. there's one them that lowkey be stealing but i aint a snitch okay). We do have an AI program (she's great, love her) but she's hella overworked too and essentially babysits the boss in the field, in his personal life, etc.
So forgive me if during the brief moments of peace, I happen be playing the sims. I never use the work monitors for this and the AI is fully aware that this is how I take my "breaks" and is FINE with it.
But one day the boss randomly walked in while I was busy browsing some hair options and lost his shit. "Something, something, anomoly" I don't even remember what he said, all ik is he was growling n shit over my shoulder with his stank ass breath. I didn't even think he was mad at ME fr-- he's just unhealed like that, so i let that shit go this time.
i leave to grab lunch rq and come back. day goes by normally. but when i log back into MY PERSONAL COMPUTER, my shit was gone.
Obviously ik it was him. No one else cares enough to do anything like that. So i go confront him. And of course that villianous ass bitch is cracking a smile talking bout some "you can play dress up at home,". like NO???? SIR I NEVER GO HOOOMMME. IM HERE ALL THE TIME???
keep in mind i do NOT get paid for this. the most i get is experience and a therapy session on Wednesdays, thats it.
unhealthy yes, but he knows that i care about this work and he def knows my home life isn't the best anyways. so idk why he was being so petty about it.
but since we're being petty now of course i had to go lower.
he has this lil hologram suit. it's cute or whatever, super secure. but i just asked his AI for a favor and she let me go ham on the programing.
everytime the program detects his heartrate above a certain level, his costume will change. i have it cycling through a few options, but the bunny suit has been a fan favorite lately.
he's pretty pissed about it and ik he suspects me, but he doesn't want to admit that i somehow got into his superfancy tech and embaressed him. so its a lot of passive aggressiveness and for sulking now. everytime he changes it, i change it back and then some. it's fun.
it has also become a growing meme in the work gcs, tho some of the heros have tried to scold me about it. but tbh idc. none of the costumes impede his work, if anything the distraction helps him catch villians off guard. so pretty harmless, i could do worst. so im taking suggestions on how to keep ruining his day until i get bored of it (or till i get all my cc redownloaded).

Hello and welcome to my Skyrim Legacy Challenge! I’ve really wanted to make a legacy challenge lately and Skyrim was on that list because it’s one of my all time favorite games. It’s actually one of the top five games I’ve logged the most hours into – thousands of hours. But fear not, you do not have to be a fan of the game or have even played it to tackle this legacy challenge. All are welcome! c:
I did my best to keep this challenge in line with Skyrim while also exploring nearly everything there is to do in the Sims 4. With that said, I’ve used pretty much every pack, excluding most kits. If you don’t own that pack, you can simply skip that generation or change it to fit the packs you DO have. I spent 5 days working on this challenge and managed to reach 100 generations. The reason it’s so long is because I wanted to make this for the Legendary Legacy Achievement.
I’m currently testing out this challenge myself so, if you get farther than me and run into any problems or find something extremely difficult/impossible to complete, feel free to skip it. Please let me know, though, so I can edit this challenge as needed.
