Hi bewitched-bullet,

I'm the anon who talked about their "irreconcilable differences" when it comes to how to portray the characters the other day. I only mentioned it in passing because my main point was their lack of communication. Now I'd like to elaborate on the character portrayals. Like I said I've followed them for a year. And for the last 5-6 months I've observed their interactions on an almost daily basis.

(I'm a peaceful and gentle person and I hope my writing has reflected those qualities)

TL;DR: John has been trying to establish the relationship as a middle-aged couple; Sherlock's characterization is more in Series 1.

During this short six months, I've seen John's love declarations at least 4 times, which was either doubted, ignored, or "forgotten" the next day by Sherlock. Not big declarations, but those that came naturally as a result of the scene. John was apparently discouraged (since probably 3 months ago? It's so hard to search the posts with the Archive turned off) and even stopped acting jealous when there was Sheriarty. Oh, there was one time, I think your other followers may also remember, that John and Sherlock talked about John playing clarinet. It was a huge reblogged post and in the end John posted a photo of him playing clarinet with a ring on his finger. When followers pointed it out,John asked Sherlock something like "what could you deduce from me wearing your family heritage ring?" The question never got a reply. I'll send you links of love declarations when I get some free time to search through the blog.

Sherlock, on the other hand, is portrayed mostly as in series 1: reckless, brilliant, petulant, etc. and cranks up those qualities even more than Series 1. From time to time he forgets Rosie's existence. He also adds a characteristic that was not in BBC canon: Sherlock's lack of understanding of common daily expressions, like heart=feelings. I've seen him given anatomy lessons to followers when it came to "heart" and such. When followers questioned how he was able to go around his work if he didn't understand very common expressions or having edibles at home when Rosie lived there, John explained something like, "oh, he's toying you guys. That's not the case". The thing is that Sherlock behaves the same with John, so "toying with followers" doesn't explain it. The real reason is that they see characters at different timelines/ life stages.

I haven't followed them long, but I could already see for a while now that they couldn't meet in the middle ground, so the problem went back even further. I saw posts that saying the group doesn't talk as mods. Let's say that I wouldn't be surprised considering the lack of communication I've observed. This mess could have handled so much better if they had real communication along the way. They should have parted their ways a long time ago if they successfully communicated that the differences were irreconcilable. Personally I don't think it'll ever work out with zero behind the scenes, especially among characters with a long complicated canon history.

These are extremely good points for the role play community.

If their interpretation of a character they are playing doesn't vibe well, be cordial and try different characters, make adjustments, or separate ways.

The John mod mentioned that they have a 3 year history of rping together. The blogs are only.....2 years old? So they were rping together for a year before coming to tumblr.

If the John mod was dissatisfied with their character chemistry and rp style(s), a year is more than enough time to figure that out.

Of course people can change their minds. But as we have seen from Mycroft/John and Harriett mods, they refuse to speak out of character to deal with the more serious issues.

4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Eh. Well. Listen, I always want and mean to respond to comments, because as a commenter I always love a response from the author, but I am procrastinator supreme so a lot of the time I just... don't. Not for a great long while at least. Then, two years AFTER you left a comment, you might get an e-mail notification about me responding. It's horrible, really, because I keep the comments in my heart and treasure them so much and the lovely people taking the time to leave a few words on my silly stories really do deserve better.

5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Life, Still to Come has the one main character Jim Moriarty killing himself and his lover Sebastian Moran after he's diagnosed with incurable brain cancer, so I guess that's pretty angsty? The tone of the fic, however, is... kinda soft and peaceful, really. It doesn't feel so very sad, I think.

For Gallavich, I've got Chapter 7 of my ficlet collection Highs, and Your Lows (i will weather them). It's an Wild West AU kind of deal, where Ian Gallagher is visited by the ghost of the young fiend Mickey Milkovich after his dad beats him to death. That one is sad, but there's the glimmer of a promise that they might meet again one day, in a better world.

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

My fics mostly end on a happy note, and I have a hard time pinning down which is the happiest. Hm. I'm gonna say Pressure or possibly Foreign Country, if only because the happy endings there are offered in contrast to the otherwise angsty story and so seems all the happier for it.

7. Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you’ve written?

I have, once. Well, started one, really. Notes Regarding the End of the World is a crossover between Sherlock BBC and Mark Lawrence's The Broken Empire trilogy. I still feel there's a bunch of potential there, but I'm very hesitant I'll ever finish it.

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Not to my recollection, no. Back when I posted my SW fic on the Jedi Council forums you might receive critical comments at times, but no hate.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Not really, no. I'm not very interested in reading it, and so see very little point in writing it. There's been a few semi-explicit depictions of sexual acts – most notably in Claim – and I'm not averse to writing kink fic, even if they don't typically include actual sex when I do. For instance, I did The Ways We Bend and Break and Mend for X-Men, and the whole point was Charles first whipping Erik and then cuddling him – except in the end it turned into a character study with lots of emotions, and I think any attempts to write smut would be like that for me. Accidental character drama. XD

I might have a Gallavich thing for kinktober that is likely to be pretty explicit and kinda messed up. We'll see.

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

I don't think so. There have been a few instances of stuff popping up bearing a strong resemblance to things I've written, but there's also been times when I realize that things I have written bear a (very much unintentional) strong resemblance to other stuff that predates them, so I really think that's the nature of the beast. In any big fandom, the same ideas are likely to occur to multiple people, and we are all, often unconsciously, inspired by the same things and by each other.

11. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yeah, to Chinese and Russian.

12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes! Pathoftheranger and I co-wrote (How to Break the) Alibi Armistice, which was fun!

13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

I'm a creature of ever-changing affections, so I'm not so good with ”all-time favourite”  and to be honest, I mostly tend to have favourite characters and ship them with everything in sight... Currently it's all about Gallavich but pretty much all ships including Jim Moriarty is forever gold to me (though MorMor is The Best. Or is it Sheriarty? Or maybe Mormorlock? Or Moriadlock? Or Johmlock – notice the 'm'?). Cherik's a big one too!

Ask me again in six months and my answer might well have changed!

14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

The aforementioned Notes Regarding the End of the World. And I have this superlong Star Wars fic I started writing when I was 16 and wrote for years and years and then just... stopped writing, when I was maybe 20 pages from the end? It's currently at 180k words. This one I DO have some hope that I will go back and finish one day, although it's likely to be a jarring experience since I'm very much not 16 years old any more and my ideas about writing and the characters and everything have shifted quite a bit.

15. What are your writing strengths?

I do pretty well with the short format, I think. And with dialogue? Finding the voice of the characters (some more than others, certainly). Writing in my native Swedish, I think I'm pretty good at offering decent prose – I'd like to think I have a fairly developed ear for the flow of the text, and the melody of it? But when writing in English, that gets quite a bit harder. This really annoys me, because I'm rather preoccupied with the stylish elements of writing – though I've found that a lot of people seem happy enough to overlook clunky writing as long as they find the story otherwise engaging, which is a huge blessing for me. I believe I can build a decent plot, but since I can't write anyting longer than a few K these days there's no telling, is there?

16. What are your writing weaknesses?

Primarily getting any writing done at all. Mostly, I stare at a blank page and despair and then I give up. This is why I no longer write long fic. I also tend to reuse favorite phrases or themes far too often. And there are so many subclauses... Proofreading happens to other people (I'd like it to happen to me too, but I'm terrible with it). I'm not good at accepting constructive criticism, even when I ask for it. I will often favour style over efficiency, and I'll stubbornly refuse to admit that this can be a problem.

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

This question makes me feel like I ought to have developed thoughts on this, but I don't so much... I don't mind it? I've used it. Uh. It's a good idea to do a bit of research and not just rely on Google translate for it? If you don't like it, don't use it. Those are my thoughts.

18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Star Wars. <3

19. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?

Buffy/Angel/Spike. The Book of All Hours. Heroes. Maybe something based on The Coldfire Trilogy... ? Oh, and the Bible. I'm sure there are others.

20. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

I really don't have one. There are a few I'm particularly happy with, but no one that truly stands out... That said, I was quite chuffed with how the first ficlet in Or Else Into the Light, my (tiny) collection of Anakin redemption one-shots, turned out. And Claim. I’m very pleased with Claim.

Alright, I'm just gonna cut to the chase- I'm a BBC Sherlock and TS fanatic, and so is @thomasxsides, and while we have different preferences I have ways to accommodate for that! So- here are my different takes on the casting for this AU because so many different ideas work here and I love it- though I'll only mention four characters of note each time

Sheriarty (Jimlock) fanfic

Sherlock stepped into the house without hearing the usual warm greeting, nor seeing the familiar smiling face.

He froze for a moment uncomfortably.

Quietly taking off his coat and changing his shoes, he walked to the living room to see Jim standing in front of the window with his back to him.

The weather outside was gloomy, there was no rain, but it was extremely depressing.

Jim stood there, like a cold stone statue frozen in the gloom.

Sherlock's heart tightened.

"Jim."

He called him, walked towards him, and stood a few inches behind him.

Jim didn't answer.

The uneasy feeling in his heart increased.

"Jim."

He called him louder once.

A broken, flat answer was squeezed from Jim’s throat:

"...Sherlock..."

Uneasy continued to invade, oppressing his heart.

"Jim, what happened."

He stood there and asked.

Jim slowly said:

"Sherlock."

He turned his head slowly.

Sherlock's lips tightened in an instant.

He saw Jim's eyes, they were hollow and sad. He heard Jim asking him stiffly:

"Is my existence.. wrong?"

The downhearted depression permeated, and the passage of time was slowed down drastically.

"Jim, tell me what happened."

He didn't answer his question, just continued to repeat his inquiry.

“Is my existence wrong?”

Jim looked at him, a tiny arc curled up at the corner of his mouth.

"Did I tell you,"

His voice was faint, like it’s from a different dimension.

"… that I have a 15-year-old sister?"

Sherlock frowned.

"No."

He thought he knew well enough about Jim's family background, but he had never heard of him having a younger sister. Not to mention that she is 15 years old.

The corner of Jim's mouth hooked abruptly again.

"It's ok. Because today, she died."

"…”

Sherlock couldn't react for a moment.

And Jim just continued to say:

"My sister, she died today."

He paused.

"And my father, said before her body, to me— If it was you who died, that would be great."

The sky outside the window seemed a little gloomier than before, but there was still no rain. Just gloomy.

Sherlock felt a little depressed and nauseous.

"How come……"

"My father," Jim said with a chuckle. "My father, had always wanted a daughter." He lowered his head and stopped, and continued: "But after giving birth to me, my mother has been in poor health and can't bear another childbirth. So..."

"That sister is not your mother's child."

Sherlock took the conversation clearly.

Jim nodded.

"Since he had that girl, my father completely abandoned me and my mother. He divorced her then married the girl's mother. He loved that girl from his heart. And I..."

He sighed with a wry smile.

"Just like how he loved that girl, he despised me, and hated me. Right down from the heart. If he could, I knew that he would take every bit of me and give that entire to her. Everything.”

"..."

Sherlock looked at Jim. He felt suffocation in his chest.

"But," Jim said again. "I don't know what happened. The girl has had a serious disease since she was born. Every doctor said she probably won't live to 20 years old. Today, she died.”

He looked at his feet, and took a deep breath.

"I went to the hospital just now and stood in front of her body. And my father, my father... he hit me trembling all over, and said to me, if it had been me who died, today would be the best day of his life..."

He raised his head, a stream of tears slowly shed from the corner of his eyes.

Sherlock saw rain hit the glass pane on the windows.

"Sherlock, you tell me..."

Jim's lips opened and closed pale and trembling, and Sherlock could hear the sobbing in the air.

"My existence, is it wrong?"

The rain hit the glass, crackling. The air was filled with suffocating silent echoes.

"Jim."

He saw Jim's body shake slightly, tears dripping from his cheeks.

"You're right, Jim."

He walked slowly towards Jim step by step.

"You are not at all wrong."

He was standing in front of Jim, and he could see Jim's eyelashes trembling from a distance.

“You have never been wrong.”

He looked into Jim's eyes. Extreme pain and despair were surging in those eyes at this moment.

"You're the best."

"...Sherlock..."

Jim's voice was cracking up.

Sherlock held him in his arms.

"Sherlock..."

"It's okay, Jim."

He held Jim and gently stroked the hair on the back of his head.

"No matter how others think of you, you will be my Jim. Unique, from the rest of the world.”

His voice is soft and deep, like hypnosis.

"No matter what happens, you will have me. I will always be here."

He said firmly.

"Because you are so perfect, irreplaceable."

The rain poured down outside the window. Jim was still in his arms, crying like a child.

Sherlock embraced him, gently, tightly, as if holding a rare treasure.

"You are, to me, irreplaceable because you are, my whole world.”

On The Ice by berlynnwohl (35K, E, Johnlock) "Sherlock, I once saw you taste a vacuum cleaner attachment that had been used as a murder weapon, so can we please not pretend that Dungeons and Dragons is too weird for you?"

Parallel by brbsoulnomming (77K, M, Johnlock) There's a case at a secondary school/University, some series of threats or string of bizarre murders that has the entire campus shaken. In the course of the investigation, Sherlock and John meet two students. And, because they both want to help with the investigation, they get to watch them become friends and fall a little in love. And that makes them feel things about themselves that they've been working very hard to not feel, thank you.

Secondary Exposure by thesardine (18K, T, Gen) After twenty years, the killer who abducted John as a child has resurfaced.  Now John and Sherlock must track him down before he claims another victim, and at the same time navigate the shifting nature of their relationship.

John avoided the thing like the plague. AU in which Sherlock treats sex like he does crime in canon.

The Baker Street Series by magicbunni (199K, T, Gen with background John/Sarah) Conspiracy and murder find Sherlock Holmes and John Watson surrounded by covert enemies in the heart of Scotland Yard. Together, they unearth clues that illuminate the scope, depth, and distorted psychology behind the crime. And, after a preemptive strike ordered by the mastermind they pursue, Holmes elects to continue the investigation under conditions that will force John Watson to fight for his friend's -- colleague's -- life.
