in terms of design advice, any ideas for a broke college student apartment room? 💕💕

college is a weird time because you are kind of a grown up but also definitely not! and your interests and tastes will change so rapidly in the next few years. so honestly it’s a great time to experiment and be creative. this advice all depends on your particular space, but in any small space everything that can be double duty, should be double duty (night stand is also a tv tray/laptop tray, art is also bulletin board or jewelry holder), the more uses you can get out of something, the better! going vertical on the walls where you can get away with it is amazing. here are a few easy and cheap ways to upgrade and some basic design principles:

take this design quiz to find out your style (plug in a fake email) and then google or pinterest away. you’ll see repeat themes (for ex. major bohemian trend is macrame, which easily DIYable, or MCM is all about legs and clean profiles). maybe that would be fun post - to highlight different styles and trends. but here are some upgrades that translate to any design style for cheap:

PLANTS

don’t go to a nursery and drop a hundred dollars you don’t have. a plant or two or three you really love will change the vibe of the whole space, and give you something to take care of, which is ofc good for your mental health. tips for getting plants and planters on the cheap!

think of a relative or friend who already has houseplants and ask for free ones next time they’re splitting. i literally did my entire garden this way in my first place. 

look on like FB marketplace or whatever your swap site is because people are often selling plants or cuttings for a discount.

i have literally split the cost of a plant with a friend and then split it in half, like a baby before Solomon

pothos plants of any kind are easy to take care of and can split into smaller plants pretty regularly.

succulents are usually a few dollars at the store and everyone loves them! start with one simple succulent.

herbs! if you get herb garden seeds or plants you literally make what you eat!

if you have pets, make sure they are pet friendly.

i do not spend a lot of $$ on planters! i use terra cotta because 1. they’re cheap as hell and 2. cute! some of my favorite planters are terra cotta pots kristina painted for me! you can also thrift pots, which i would encourage, or reuse food containers by putting small holes in the bottom. 

create hanging plants by making yarn macrame holders! youtube is your friend on this! you can get a ceiling hook for like $3 if it’s a solid ceiling (drywall) and super easy to patch up when it’s time to leave.

ART

function + form. something organic that you can change out inspiration or art, like a cork or inspiration board (look on like a varage sale or in a thrift store for this).  you can get four12x12 cork boards from target for $7 and create something like this from two of them, which is in and of itself a piece of art (and you can take it down w/out damaging walls)

other cheap things i have done for art:

calendar or magazine pages in thrifted frames  (my favorite cheap tricks is to get matte black or white craft paint for $1.25 from wm or target and paint a bunch of odd frames to unify them)

a picture ledge like this from ikea is your best friend because you can interchange the art to be whatever you want!

embroidery hoop fabric bulletin boards

seriously, posters are cool. get a cheap poster online and hang it with washi tape. it’s not precious. if you want something more grown up, try to thrift a frame for it for cheap. if you don’t like the color of the frame, paint it! if you can’t hang something heavy like this on the wall, use command velcro strips OR set it on top of a dresser or bookcase and lean it against the wall.

i love tassels and buntings. just google either of those and you’ll get thousands of cheap ideas. in my last bedroom i just had a bunting i cut and made over my bed and it acted like a bedframe and i loved it.

just free prints from the internet hung up with little clips like this ($2 from target) or bulky push pins – those holes are so easy to patch!

when my kids were little until two weeks ago i had an entire wall covered with their artwork. i’m saying maybe go to the thrift store, get some ugly canvases with your friends, and have a painting party. everyone brings a $4 thing of acrylic paint and a brush and have a party. good memories + new art for everyone. swap at the end!

pictures! actually print out those pictures and tape them to the wall with washi tape. you can also do something like this with push pins for as big or small as you want to make it (i have this in my living room

here’s a proper primer on the 7 elements of design, but you can skip that and go here if you want!

BALANCE

white space and focal points. in the same way that you need to break up one massive wall of text into digestible paragraphs, you also need to break up the focus in your room. a FOCAL POINT is a statement area in your room (i.e. the window, over your bed, your desk) that your eye is drawn to, and where you want your eye to be drawn to. ideally rooms should have ONE focal point (that’s like the adverb room for writing) but in a dorm apartment, that isn’t practical because it HAS to be multifunction. the important takeaway is that white space on your walls is okay, and important. it gives you a soft space to land, visually, which is important in making you feel more relaxed and even productive.

groupings – grouping like with like makes great sense organizationally AND design wise. a collection of postcards will look amazing on the wall together rather than spread around the room. 

LAYERS

adding layers can make a space feel luxurious – curtains, rugs, extra throw pillows or an extra blanket on your bed or chair. plants are great for this, but fabrics and baskets can add another layer. these can be pricey so i would a. raid your mom’s house if that’s an option and ask if she needs ‘x’ rug or curtains anymore. you can also thrift curtains for cheapppp or even look for clearance fabric – once you wash the curtains they really are safe to use. clearance frabric can be hemmed without being sewn and hung with curtain rings if you need to. and $5 tension rods can work as a curtain rod inside a window frame if needed. i could do a whole post on this but a cheap rug next to your bed and something soft on a window can do wonders!  dude i have also bought cheap cotton weave cloth from walmart and used rit dye to make turqoise curtains and i loved for years. see also: RIT DYE

so decorative pillows are expensive as HELL but regular, cheap pillows are like $4. i get cheap fabric or thrift fabric and sew my own, which you could do by hand, really, and use the pillow stuffing to make it. ikea also sells great cheap pillow covers! 

COLOR

gosh there are no hard and fast rule here but here is a great primer series on color theory for design that you can translate to your room

simplifying a color palette will feel more calming to you, and so will using cool colors like blues and greens. but again, no hard and fast rules. repeat a color or element (shape, pattern) throughout a room 3x (ex. i have a blue rug and that same blueish tone is in a chair and also on a bookshelf. they don’t have to be the same blue, just color family, and it makes it all seem more intentional)

HOW TO DO IT CHEAPLY

buy secondhand. there are entire thrift makeover and upcycle youtube channels that are amazing! same for diy blogs. 

reuse and repurpose what you have. i turned a dvd player box into a toy oven for my kids and they used it as a play kitchen for four years. my bookshelf that stores our games in my living room was $12 from salvation army - i just painted it and added casters for $15. my dresser was a thrift from the REstore, a habitat for humanity store. my end tables are actually butcher block pieces that were in my dad’s factory for forty years. i love bringing old things back to a different life. and you don’t always need a ton of tools to do it.

barter and trade. i traded a one of my kid’s dressers for the hutch that holds our toiletries outside of our upstairs bathrooms. 

sell and repurchase something that works for you. i sold my old bookshelves on fb marketplace and bought another that actually works better. this isn’t applicable to everyone!

make muffins for someone in exchange for their sewing skills or knowledge. i’m teaching my friend to sew right now! libraries often have classes and such to learn new skills.

OK so i have rambled enough. i could ramble more. i hope this gets you started and if you have more specific or follow up questions, on this or organization side of things, let me know! remember these are all just guidelines and the most important thing is having a space you love, that makes you feel comfortable and that you’re proud of and happy in. comparing yourself to others isn’t always the best and you can make it a space you love no matter where you are.

I love how the generation that taught me to never give out ANY personal details online (including a single initial) will make their fb profile public and then comment on a post about wedding invitations with their addresses, or give their room number in a post about moving to an assisted living facility, or upload pictures of the front of their house and then post the exact dates of their upcoming vacation and include things like when the house-sitter isn't going to be there (or that they have someone to feed the pets in the mornings).

Like, I got so much shit when people found out that my most common online alias includes my first name. But I know exactly where to find a friend's mom who hates me, even though I haven't heard from her in 12 years. I can find the addresses of the friends and families of many of my friends who have gotten married.

One of my fb friends congratulated one of their friends on an upcoming family trip and their cover photo is a family portrait done in front of the house with the house number clearly visible. I can see what city they live in, and I know that area. It would take me maybe one hour of driving around to find that house. And, due to a post made two months ago when they thought they heard something in the middle of the night, I know that the only home security they have is a dog. And from the family trip post, I know the dog will be staying with a friend and that the only person who will be coming by the house is an eight year old who will be picking up their mail after school. It would take less than a day for me to plan a robbery while they're out of town. And their Christmas pictures show me that they have a lot of brand new expensive things worth stealing.

But I'm the one who's gonna get kidnapped or get their identity stolen because my (fairly common) first name is in the username I use for a site where I discuss Star Wars.

Last Friday Was Important

I should’ve written this sooner when I was happier 2 days ago, but that’ll make this entry more real.  It’s not entirely bad, but I think I’m going on a downturn.  Maybe not.  Anyway..

Last Friday, I was invited to a Zoom Birthday party from one of my friends.  She and my good friend had been dating for a while and since my breakup, they had been wanting to set me up with one of their friends.  Well, this Zoom Party was supposed to be that time.  She didn’t show...

I didn’t know that though.  So here I was in a Zoom Chat, surrounded by strangers and 2 couples that I know.  I was my normal charming self, wondering who the person could be, the entire time.  I noticed some people being really attentive when I spoke or reacted to things.  Then bit by bit I noticed they had boyfriends or mentioned something about their partner.  So I was like, “Hmm..” Then, I found out by the end of the night that that person never showed, but it didn’t matter.  I had my eyes on a Theater Woman I met within that chat.

I managed to friend her on FB within the Zoom call, which was cool.  We talked once the next day and it didn’t really go anywhere.  I haven’t tried talking since, but mostly because she’s a working woman and I don’t want to push anything.  Especially since we don’t know each other from anything.

Within that same Zoom call a different girl decided to friend me.  She has a boyfriend, but she really likes me a lot.  In fact, she messaged me just now ^.^

I’m not looking to break anything up, but it’s nice to make a new female friend that’s actually interested in talking to you.  This person has been messaging me almost daily since that Zoom call. What’s most important though is that this person invited me to a Cat Group for Metalheads on Facebook and it opened up my avenue to meet new people.  2 common interests are already there.

By like day 3 of being in this group, I saw a new hot chick, that’s pretty much right up my ally.  She posted a cute thing while holding her giant cat that said, “Show Me Your Kitties”.  I obliged, complimented her on hers and then decided to be bold and message this Woman out of the blue.  It could’ve gone South immediately, but she actually responded, we chatted about anime for a second and other stuff, and within the day it was already getting borderline deep.  This was really nice!  She’s a Single Mom of 3 though, Poly/Bi and ended a marriage of 12 years...  That sounds a lot like Green, but on steroids...  Also, this person lives far away from me, so...  I already don’t see this going anywhere seriously.

Man, I was thrilled to be talking to this girl for 2 days, but even on the 2nd day, I noticed I was getting less attention, or that the window to talk was super late, and then suddenly she dismissed herself for Bed.  Not unlike Mama Girl.  This one’s way cooler though.  A little flirty, and again, we have common interests to talk about, which is cool.  She’s “starved for tits” though, as she fully admitted.  So if this becomes one of those hot, flirty girls that ends up just sharing porn one day, I suppose I wouldn’t be opposed to that sort of friendship..

As for the girl who actually IS paying attention to me, this one is a Gamer.  Like, straight up addicted to Animal Crossing.  It’s practically all she does.  Her boyfriend lives with her, and is also addicted to games that keep him on the computer all day.  And now she’s talking to me.  A bunch...  So that’s interesting.  But I’m not going to look further into it yet. I think she just wants to adopt me as a friend, because she mentioned, we have a lot in common and it seems like we already should’ve been in each other’s lives already.  So...  ::shrugs::  But it’s nice to be wanted.

My confidence is definitely way up, since talking to these new people.  With completely varied results.  Yes, I’m still alone.  No, I’m not actively flirting with anyone, nor is anyone getting their rocks off.  But...  I think I’m finally ready to create my Tinder Profile.  Again, who knows...

Zombie Mama definitely wants to Zoom/Drink again.  We had a good night of real talk (although she wasn’t really drinking much...). I have a feeling I’m putting her in Great Friend Zone, but even still, she had a great time talking and so did I.

What I love about meeting people is the back-and-forth.  Especially when they’re shared experiences.  You can learn a lot about yourself and the other person through these conversations. I thought I found that in the last person.  That is absolutely the Honeymoon phase.  Which does end, naturally...  But I guess the secret is finding someone with enough shared interests that help maintain the momentum during the mundane times.  I dunno...

Updated 4-year recruiting rankings for all 130: SEC dominates

UGA’s nearly tied Bama as the SEC’s gap grows. Meanwhile, A&M’s 2019 class ranks sixth-best in the SEC, but would have led two other power conferences.

There are three components to my S&P+ team projections: recent history, returning production, and recruiting. I’ve written about the first two already, and with Signing Day(s) officially in the rear view and few high-impact recruits left uncommitted, it’s time to look at the recruiting component.

With these pieces in place, the 2019 S&P+ projections will officially go up on Feb. 11.

The purpose of including recruiting in these projections is to fill in the gaps.

Returning production tells you how much of last year’s team returns, and recruiting gives you an idea of what will replace departures.

Previously, I used a simple, two-year average for the recruiting portion. This time around, I’ve complicated things a bit. (I’m pretty good at that.) With the release of updated S&P+ ratings (changes to the formula discussed here), I took the opportunity to reassess how I make projections with recruiting rankings. I tinkered with different weighting for each year, and I tested whether a two-year sample was the most effective. It wasn’t.

Here’s the new approach, based on what appears to be the most statistically predictive:

Whereas I previously used a blend of both 247Sports Composite and Rivals ratings for each year, I am now using only the Composite.

I use a blend of point totals (how the recruiting services determine their class rankings) and per-recruit averages, since teams signing 32 guys in one year don’t automatically end up getting a long-term advantage over teams signing 23. Point totals make up about 78 percent of the formula, and per-recruit averages made up about 22 percent.

Using previous years of data as the testing ground, I found the projections work best when they are weighted as follows: this year’s recruiting class accounts for about 67 percent of the projection, last year’s accounts for 15 percent, the class from two years ago accounts for 15 percent, and the class from three years out accounts for about 3 percent. So I guess we call it a weighted four-year average now.

By now, you know the other primary Signing Day story lines: the SEC dominated (finally, some good recruiting news for the SEC), December is the new February, five-star defensive ends flowed like water, etc.

Now it’s time to look at the entire picture. Below are the 2019 class percentile (based on that blend of Composite points and averages) and weighted four-year averages for each team.

The weighted four-year rankings are what I will use in projections.

(Note: Service academy recruiting rankings are notoriously strange. A lot of guys commit, many don’t get accepted, many change their plans, and plenty without recruiting profiles end up on the roster. So the grain-of-salt method is the way to go with Army, Navy, and Air Force.)

There are rarely a ton of changes here — the teams that recruit well tend to be the teams that always recruit well. Still, something interesting stands out right up top: while Alabama’s 2019 class was absurd and historic, head coach Nick Saban has basically only tied Georgia’s Kirby Smart in terms of recruiting since Smart, Saban’s former defensive coordinator, moved to Athens. Don’t let the Dawgs’ poor 2018 finish distract you from how loaded this team is going to be moving forward.

As it pertains to the S&P+ projections, here are some of the more important shifts that the 2019 class has brought about:

It is not news that the SEC leads recruiting rankings, but that is domination. Only 7.1 percentage points separate the other four power conferences’ averages, but the SEC is 14.6 percentage points ahead of the second-place Big Ten. Texas A&M had the No. 6 class in its conference per percentile rating and would have led the ACC or Pac-12. Goodness.

Dominating within your conference

Here are the teams that overachieved their own conference averages by the largest amount:

Most power conferences have their own lists of haves and have-nots. The Mountain West, meanwhile, has just one have. And the SEC is mostly haves — enough so that not even Alabama could outdo its conference by a particularly large amount.

Here are the teams whose four-year percentile averages changed the most from 2018 to 2019:

Purdue (up 18.1 percentage points, from 51.3 to 69.4)

Arkansas (up 14.1, from 67.9 to 82.0)

Virginia (up 9.7, from 51.4 to 61.1)

Stanford (up 8.8, from 77.9 to 86.7)

Wisconsin (up 7.9, from 67.3 to 75.2)

Using my blend of points and averages, Purdue ended up with the No. 27 class — an outright jarring achievement, considering the Boilermakers hadn’t had a class in the top 50 since 2012.

Head coach Jeff Brohm didn’t need much time to make Purdue more respectable on the field; the Boilers have finished in the S&P+ top 50 for two straight years after averaging a No. 86 ranking over the previous seven seasons. Now that work is paying off in recruits’ living rooms as well.

And now we look at the other side: the teams that are falling.

Well this is a little bit poetic. Brohm’s team is atop the “rising” list, while the team Brohm spurned in the offseason heads up the “falling” list. Granted, Louisville still made an intriguing hire (Appalachian State’s Scott Satterfield), and he put together an intriguing staff. But there wasn’t much time to do something about the sketchy class Satterfield inherited.

UL head coach Billy Napier moved mountains this year in recruiting. The Ragin��� Cajuns signed 23 three-star prospects, including five that had a rating of 0.8500 (basically, mid-three-star) or higher. Their class ended up 74th overall, ahead of programs like USF (75th), Houston (78th), and BYU (79th). Damn.

Cincinnati’s slide was as circumstantial as anything else — Luke Fickell only had 16 scholarships to give out in the 2019 class, which led to a class that only ranked 72nd overall, down quite a bit from recent levels of domination. On a per-recruit basis, UC’s class graded out about the same as recent classes.

this is another dream i felt like i had before. i was in a park, next to a squirrel, a wolf, and a giraffe. the squirrel would chase me causing the wolf and the giraffe to chase the squirrel. i ran across a bridge and climbed a sign, only to have it break. and as the sign somehow wobbled back and forth, i sat on top swinging, swinging and watching my shadow on the ground swing back and forth. before moving at all i thought carefully about this plan and climbing the sign was the goal. maybe it meant the wolf wouldn’t hurt me but i would get tohave an experience.

2nd dream was about a chase as well. in a dirty city… i forget why. but i hid in a corner and saw my friends who were also running disguise themselves as an old man and a homeless man, and our pursuers ran by. we went to a restaurant, i think owned by our aunties, maybe the chopsticks auntie or smth. and my job was to wash the vegetables. they had already been julienned though lol but i spent so long washing  the julienned carrots because there was so much. all the while i was listening to these three rude old dudes sitting outside complaining about the service because no one went to take their order. finally i went inside and asked the young man who was the only one working to check on them. and the dream shifts to his pov and he explanis to the jeerin g men that he will be the new owner, and he grabs my rpevious character close, who i guess is a woman, and says she will be his wife and co-owner, and the men grudgingly comment on their appproval.

the last dream i am a spoiled chinese girl waiting for her spoiled chinese boyfriend to take her to the movies. we are both attractive in the way chinese tv likes young people to be. im waiting for him to text, waiting, and im angry that he has forgotten again. and i fall asleep on my bed, and have a dream. my dream is his dream. he says i his dream, he put on these lenses?glasses? and his eyes became unbearably cute, and everyones stares made him feel unsaafe. tjen he put on another pair and his eyes glowerd red, and everone seemed intimidated, and he felt comfort in that. waking up from his dream, he realized everyone looked at him that way already, and nothing had changed.

today mom told me the story again about her life with dad. we walked after dinner along the path that led through the trees outside our neighborhood, and sat on the steps outside the Videon company. she was in beijing. she was dating a man who was tall and thin, who was clean and orderly, who cooked for her. he was insecure that she had a phd and he was only a college graduate. she always felt he had his guard up, couldn’t speak from his heart, insecure. they had only been seeing each other for a while, but she decided she should move on. she went on a date with dad, set up by a mutual friend. she says her first impression was how short and stout he was. pale, a scholar. or nerd. didn’t know how to make good conversation, and while she fantasized about expectations before meeting him each time, their dates were very plain, boring. she says he probably felt she didn;t have much interest in him either. the setting up felt stale, rehearsed, like there was a path to follow that was already laid out. he went home for his younger brother’s wedding, and never talked to her again. their mutual friend says to mom, us from henan, when we talk, we say what we mean. but these hebei people could say ten things and none of them would be truthful. they had no contact for months. three days before dad was supposed to leave for america, my grandmother came to beijing to help him pack and send him off. she brought the money the government game them, untouched, for my grandfather’s death. and it was stolen. my grandmother passed out, and was sent to the hospital. mom says my grandmother thought dad should have gotten together with mom, that if they had been together, none of this would have happened. dad went to her office to find her, and her colleagues said she was on lab. and his thick-headed self thought she was at a homophonous company in the tech district. and as he was headed down, she was headed up, and they met in the stairwell. if they had missed each other, then they would have never met again. but he told her what happened, and she went with him to the hospital, and she helped him pack and sent him off. i wanted to ask what compelled her to do that. im guessing it was what he said, a mother in the hospital, a near departure… maybe it was the beginning of a romantic feeling. she only fell in love with him after they had both settled in america. she said things were more simple when they got away from the messiness of china… the city, the relationships. mom says her mother was grateful because she thought mom would have trouble getting married. in my head i laughed.. her stubborn ass… they knew. she said dad’s mom saw her as a good fit. which was cruel irony thinking about my first years. mom says she had never argued with dad before grandma came. so many of his bad habits started then. she told me about this because we talked about dad being childish at home, refusing accountability, using manipulative tactics to ignore us and center himself, trying to blame others for his mistakes. we talked about mom’s shitty coworkers. we talked about adeles mom and dad, their abusive relationship, the abusive dads, and the societies of fear (scarcity) that made our community members brilliant fools. mom said she could never forget that guy she dated before dad, though i think she didn’t really mean it because she said again how he was always guarded around her. i wanted to tell her, mom, i have liked a boy a lot too. during high school. his name is andrew, and he has been on my mind a lot recently since coming home. he was really good to me, mom. sometimes i wish i was more brave. but i didn’t say anything. i was looking at the clouds, and they were moving earlier. they were moving west, then east, then west, and they stopped. and then they vanished. the sun was setting, and mom said they probably flew away. but i said no, they vanished. dad came over, i could tell it was him because he walked cute like donald duck. he said this was his regular exercising place. as if he even left the house to exercise regularly, much less walk to our spot, the place he knew we would be. we got up and left after a while because it was getting dark. later i would hear dad complaining downstairs about how we didn’t stay to watch him dance, and how that was what had held him back. shameless.

there are some memories of stories that i just cannot say were things i made up, but i have so little recollection of what and how they were told.

when mom was in alabama, her boss or maybe coworker tried to date her. i guess she was not into white men. maybe it was one of the things that pushed her toward dad.

mom has had a miscarriage before. im not sure about the context. i think i remember her telling me when she was upset many years ago, or maybe just casually. it might have been something she thought should be kept a secret, or just something moms don’t talk about to their kids. i do remember her recounting more recently once while talking about being pregnant with me vs alice, that she had a bit of miscarriage each time. im not totally sure what that means but she said it like it was natural, a thing that just happened for some people. maybe a bit of bleeding and discharge.

i think i remember alice once telling me she thinks dad wants to be a woman but is too repressed to admit it. and then saying thats probably not it.

Of Bestfriends and Other Stuff

Today has been... a good day. It was a very good day, actually. It is now 8:30pm here and as I am writing here I feel blessed. That is the only word I can find to describe what I feel right now.

So, yeah, next week I’ll be a year older and though I don’t know how to feel about it, I do know that things have changed a lot and honestly? I’m glad for it. 

I’ve had my fair share of friends throughout my life, which is not very long and not very short either. I had a best friend that was like a sister to me from when I was 3 years old up until I turned 8. I still have a picture of us together in one of my photo albums and it is painful to see sometimes. When I see it, I can’t help but wonder how she is doing. I mean, I’m in university and I’m doing fairly well for myself if I compare to how my sisters and my family in general did when they were my age. Is she doing well, too? Sometimes I feel this strong urge to look for her, but then I remember that we stopped seeing each other after I moved with my aunt and then I realize that I am too scared to go back to those days.

During third grade I made a friend that was a lot like me and to who I confessed I had come to like this boy from our class. I told her that exactly on our last day of class, not knowing that it would be also the last day we’d see each other. I have a picture of the whole group when the psychologist of the school was treating me. I don’t like seeing that picture, either, because that year was quite chaotic for me and it brings back a lot of bad memories. I remember my therapist telling me last year that in those pictures I don’t look like a happy 9 year old girl. I guess I wasn’t.

In fourth grade, which was also a very hard year for a lot of reasons, I made two friends. I was closer to the one I stopped talking after fifth grade, ironically, and we used to spend lots of time together. I used to go to her house to do homework together and she would invite me to family gatherings and so did I. We ended up drifting apart after she changed schools in fifth grade and even though sometimes I see her FB profile, I don’t feel the need to send her an invitation. My other friend, though? She is still one of my best friends to this day. She is right here next to me. I was just texting her now about the homework we have for thursday, on that class we are taking together. We’ve been friends for 12 years now. She feels more like my sister than my actual sisters, and for that I count myself lucky.

Highschool was a very weird period of time as it usually is, and I had a few different friends. I remember being very close to this group of people during my second year in highschool and then I just kinda started spending more time with other people. We still talked as always, we just weren’t as close anymore. But these other friends? Man, I loved them. I loved our little trio. I loved our inside jokes, that we had items and colors and themes that were so us that we always had stuff with them. At some point we even had these ribbons in our favorite colors, matching ones, and we wore them for school for three years straight until they were too damaged. After we graduated from highschool and started university, one of these people drifted apart because of other people and I accepted it because they were more alike and that is okay. It happens sometimes. But this other friend? She was like my sister too. We had a lot in common, we went through a lot together... God, I loved her as I love my family. But things happen and sometimes people get tired of you and she decided to just leave me, and I accepted it too because I never beg people to stay. The one time I did, it didn’t work, so I just don’t do it anymore. I still miss her and sometimes I get this strong urge to message her and tell her that I am sorry, but I know it was not my fault.

So, well, university has been a weird experience for me. I’m not exactly the most social person so I have not made many friends, but this year has been different. I made two friends that feel like they’ve known me my whole life. I just love them so much.

This is why I feel blessed. My group of friends may be somewhat small compared to others, but I love each of them so very much. Even Deb, who has been with me since... Holy lord, since tenth grade. She is, actually, one of my biggest blessings. She is there for me, always, even when I just need to bawl my eyes out for some stupid crap like watching Inuyasha Kanketsu-hen in spanish and the fact it made me cry again to see Kagura die. She gets me in ways no one else does. We’ve been through a lot together, and we’re still here (even after stupid fights that leave us both crying).

I feel blessed because I have all these people I love, all these people I know care about me and I just feel the strong urge to cry because I know a lot of people don’t have that. I feel blessed because, despite being disappointed in some ways, I have more reasons to be happy than to be angry. Yes, I am disappointed and I’ve been for weeks now, and I think a part of me will be disappointed forever. You know that feeling of having given so much of you to someone and seeing how they spit it out in front of you, with no respect? Well, that is what happened with who was, at some point, my very best friend. Marvin was great, I thought he got me, I thought he was there for me, but turns out he might have been there for me just because he wanted a chance to see if I’d love him romantically some day.

Needless to say, I am disappointed and hurt and angry, and though I feel used and extremely uncomfortable around him, I find that this is not the end of the world as I thought it would be. So it is okay. He might have let me down, but I have other friends who do love me and god do I feel blessed by them. So, all this story and all this long-ass thing is just to say that I am glad to be alive, to be here, and to have met all of my friends who are in my life today.

These are my friends: Deb, who I trust like no other and who feels like she is a part of my soul I didn’t know was missing; Vale, who has been with me for more than half my life and has seen the worst and best in me; Nicole, who is more like my child and the main reason why I don’t want children; Daniela, who is there for me no matter how tired or busy she is, she is always available and she gives like no other even though we became friends earlier this year; Andrés, who I met in my japanese classes from three years ago and feels like that little brother I have to take care of even though he looks like the older brother; and Andrey, who I met this semester in japanese class too and who feels more like my best friend than you-know-who.

I love them. I just want them to know that. I love them and they are the family I chose for myself, for the one I didn’t have when I needed one. Thank you, too, for being in my life and letting me be a part of yours. I will never be able to repay all the things you’ve given me, the things you’ve forgiven me... and for that I am thankful.
