Forever (finale)
Rating: Teen and Up Genre: Mystery, Romance, Drama, Action, Angst, Paranormal. Pairing: Yoongi x Reader Summary: In Bightville there is never any nonsense, the scariest thing one might face is tripping at the roller-disco. But, when you move to the small town, crazy things start to happen. Suddenly people are going missing without any leads. It’s when your neighbor Seokjin goes missing that things get serious because now his friends suspect you!
Announcement: It’s the end and oh my gosh I love it...
[First] [Previous] [Masterlist] [The End]
“It’s been decided Jungkook and Jimin will head out quietly and try to find this opening, they will radio back if they find it, and then we will head out in teams of two” Seokjin sighed the man was looking tired the days in the spirit world was causing him to look more tired and withered.
“Wait so some of us have to wait here alone?” Hoseok said concerned he didn’t want to be one of the last, he would definitely be one of the members of the second team.
“We can’t all go at once there would be a higher chance of us being spotted and I don’t think we are all wanting to fight one of those things” Namjoon explained and they nodded.
The two boys got dressed holding their makeshift weapons and headed out walkie talkie in hand, their instructions to only use it when necessary. They moved quickly and quietly down the hall until they turned down the stairs out of sight. The group waited.
Half an hour passed and you sat in the corner laying your head back against the wall, something about this place sucked the warmth from your form. Yoongi slid down the wall pressing his side against yours to keep you warm.
You all almost ran out of hope when Namjoon spoke up, “there isn’t much we can do, until we hear back from them”
“What if we don’t?”
“Then we send another two out to find them or the exit”
“I hate this plan?” Taehyung muttered scuffing his foot through the dirt
“It’s the only plan we have?” Seokjin offered using his calm voice in an authoritative manner.
“Hey we found it, we are here?” a voice called over static “you need to get around the side of the house and into the cellar the doors are open and you take the stairs down and head through the web.
“Alright” Seokjin said “Namjoon and I will head out next, Namjoon will need to be careful so we will give him as much time as he needs to get through that web. I will wait near the entrance for the next teams to come along until we are all out”
The next too left and it was barely fifteen minutes before Taehung and Hoseok left kind of rushed.
That left you and Yoongi with Johnny who looked down at his leg wrapped firmly around a broken table leg.
“It might be easier to go without me” he scoffed
“Not like anyone really missed me anyway, the hardly even know me”
“You’re Johnny, you play the piano we had the same piano teacher, remember and you can draw really well” Yoongi scoffed “your family is worried and the school has been trying to find out where you went”
“We should get ready to go” Yoongi said helping you up off the ground. He handed you his jacket and you smiled at how his scent lingered in the fabric enjoying the calming effect it had on you. He took the two lapels and slowly zipped them together.
You two grinned helping Johnny to his feet and it was a slow process of traveling through the school and the streets towards your house. It was hard but you were keeping out of sight and traveling. They see the other group moving and Seokjin in the distance signalling for them to wait as Hoseok and Taehyung head through.
In their haste Hoseok tripped over your younger snot nosed brothers bike -the very same you stressed he clean up every day- bumping the web the two boys race through the web.
You knew they were coming and in a split second you three ran across the lawn, racing your best through the web with Seokjin helping Johnny through in front of you. You could hear them coming, the hands of the boys in the real world reaching out to pull you through the burrow between the worlds. When you felt something grab the jacket, your name softly spoken you turned to see Yoongi. He gave you a forlorn look and he pressed his lips to yours. He kissed you hard and pushed you into the arms. Running from the webs and the siren on the walkie talkie blaring as he ran further away.
The hands were pulling you through the portal and you were a mess of tears struggling, unable to see, you finally found the perfect guy, he didn’t expect you to fit the norms as he definitely didn’t fit them either.
You were in the basement of your home unable to see as everything was burned with tears, Yoongi’s voice came over the walkie talkie in a pant, he was running still alive, still fighting, “Y/n, did you get through?”
You sobbed scrambling across the floor to get the walkie talkie “I am okay, where are you, you have to come through. You have to get back here and come through -”
“They are filling the web, I don’t know how long we have ?” Jungkook said keeping this end of the web firmly pressed shut clawed arms busting through
“Shut it down” Yoongi said calmly over the radio “I am surrounded”
“No, I will go back in and fight them off” You hissed, the ache in your chest burning and tight making it hard to breathe “You promised”
“I’m sorry” He whispered
“You promised, we were going to see kingkong, you promised” the words were barely legible but he understood.
“I did promise, but maybe some other time love,” He took a shaky breath, “shut it down kook”
They ripped apart the objects around the crawl space in the wall effectively ripping apart the connection between the two worlds.
You were all found in the basement crying, your parents were confused and the police were called, you were all interrogated and you explained everything as it happened sparing no detail on the abnormal. That night you were inconsolable, crying in your bed, the jacket clutched in your hands the words ‘It’s okay not to be okay’, breaking you more.
The police wrote it off as drugs and judging from the injuries and the extensive amounts of mud and dirt on their clothes they assumed the group had ventured into the woods. For some cult business. It took a week before the investigation was called off, they found Yoongi’s boot on the edge of the river and called it an accidental drug related death.
The funeral for Yoongi was small, his parents weren’t upset rather annoyed, you heard them in the next room blaming him. “If he didn’t die, I wouldn’t be here” His father frowned
“I don’t know how he lasted this long,” his older sister hissed
“Can you believe they want me to pay $1,000 for his funeral, he doesn’t even have a body,” His father sighed
“Be thankful he was dumb enough to die in the river, otherwise you would be paying more” His sister called
“Where is that bastards mother?” He sighed “Why am I paying for him, I haven’t even seen him since we split, and yet here I am the one having to pay”
Biting your lip, you were grabbed by Namjoon who lead you out to Yoongi’s car, “we took some stuff from his house, before his family could throw it away and um, if there is anything you like please feel free to take it.”
You found a few shirts and jackets with some slogans that made you feel like he was still supporting you even when he wasn’t here. But it was when you came across a collection of cassettes that you pause in confusion, Jimin laughed. “Yoongi has a tendency to write songs about everyone he meets,”
You watched him fondly touch the cassette with his name on it, you pulled out one with your name on it. The letters written in such unique handwriting that was very yoongi, laid back but simple. Jimin pulled out another titled ‘a night with her and the boys’. “Try this one too, it might be good”
You took his recording system in hopes you could listen to his work in your home and feel that connection with him. Heading straight up to your room ignoring all distractions. Setting up the machine you began by slipping in the cassette and placing on the headphones.
It was beautiful, the sound was beautiful and the song spoke of your beauty, but when the chorus hit, the drums, guitar and synth came in and he spoke about your personality. You were laughing, he summed you up so well, you felt your heart swell in the last line.
What a bitch.
She’s hot and she knows it.
And I can’t stop thinking about her.
It had you in stitches. You switched the song over to ‘a night with her and the boys’ and you couldn’t help but cry, he told a story about noticing you and the feelings you were trying to hide. He sang about you coming clean of your emotions, said he would protect you even though you didn’t need it, that he wanted to hold you because you looked so cold.
The song ended but there was more space left on the tape, you listened for thirty seconds but their didn’t seem to be anything on it. You took the small microphone and spoke into the machine, “I don’t know um how this works, but I love you” Turning it off you went to the shower, when you came back it was running, the tape had reached the end. Rewinding it you played it through, again while finding something to wear to bed.
When the song reached the end, you had finally found a warm set of pajama pants that you matched with one of yoongi’s shirts. You buried your face in the collar breathing in the scent, you went to turn of the machine which was whirring. “I don’t know um how this works, but I love you”.
You were embarrassed quickly rushing to turn it off, “God I am so embarrassing,”
“It’s so nice to hear your voice, I love you too, are you doing alright?”

You can do better than that; Ben Hardy!Roger Taylor x reader
*Author’s note*
Alrighty my dears, this one was a bit of a challenge because apparently I don’t do well with ‘play hard to get’ so I apologize in advance if some of the dialogue or writing is too cringy but I tried my best cause I got too deep into this fic. So I hope to the anon who wanted this request ends up happy with the result and I thank you for being sooo patient with me :) Not really any big warnings just swearing, mentions of being played, but there’s mostly fluff.
_______________________________________________________
*March 1st, 1971*
It wasn’t easy but I managed it. Making the big jump from moving out of my home country of America to here in England was tough and of course the homesickness hit after the first couple of weeks but somehow I managed. I knew I needed to be here in Britain because it had so much more potential for me than America ever did.
That is of course when my noisy neighbor isn’t banging away at what sounds like a drumkit at the early stages of the night. I never really got to meet them because for the past several weeks, I’ve been trying to get interviews for some record companies so that one day I can become the first ever female record producer since I’ve had an ear for talent. But until then I’m stuck with two jobs in order to pay the bills, by day I work as a waitress at a nearby restaurant then twice a week by nightfall I work at a local bar—or I guess I should call it a pub since that’s what they call it here in England, as a bartender near the University.
I had just gotten in from a seriously long shift at the restaurant since one of my coworkers thought I would be the perfect candidate for covering for him while he takes his girlfriend out on holiday for their anniversary or some shit. So 12 long hours instead of my usual 9hr has made me not only exhausted but irritated and hangry.
After finding me some cookies to chow down on, I collapsed onto my bed, not even bothering changing out of my uniform and tried to sleep. Just when I thought I could finally fall into a deep sleep; my noisy neighbor once again began banging on those blasted drums.
“That’s it! I can’t take this anymore!” I got out of my bed and left my apartment and went over next door. I banged on the door to give this guy a piece of my mind. Because for the past few days they would be drumming till the but crack of dawn which made it impossible for me to try and go to sleep, especially when I would have a double shift to work at. I banged my fist to the door and cried out, “Hey! Open this damn door right now!! I’ve got just a couple things to say to you yah bastard!!”
The door opened and standing there was a cute—okay handsome man around my age maybe a year or two older with long blonde hair that went past his shoulders, and he had the bluest blue eyes.
*Roger’s POV*
I was practicing my solo for Brian’s new song ‘Keep yourself alive’. I’ve been trying to perfect this solo for weeks now and just the other day I managed to get the solo to the point where I was happy with it. After practicing it a few times around, I knew the crowd was going to like this.
But as I was practicing, I heard several hard knocks at my door and I heard a female voice say.
“Hey! Open this damn door right now!! I’ve got just a couple things to say to you yah bastard!!” I set my drumsticks down and hurried over to the door and opened it. But I was shocked to see that such a beautiful woman was standing before me. Her long (h/c) hair gently waved past her shoulders, she wore a waitress uniform that looked like she worked at “Bill’s coffee shop”.
It then also occurred to me that she also served as a bartender at the pub where my band plays. I’ve always admired her from a far but never once got the balls to go over and say hello, well now it looks like I get the chance to do it now.
*My POV*
As I kept staring at this guy, it suddenly hit me that he was the drummer for that band that performs at the pub I work at. I think their name was Smile?
“May I help you?” I snapped out of my daze and said.
“Yes I would like to file a complaint.”
“Ahh I see, and what may I ask is the complaint in regard to?” he said with a grin as he leaned against the door.
“The noise. You do realize it’s 12:30 in the morning and some of us are trying to sleep.”
“My apologizes love.”
“Listen buddy. It’s late, I’m tired and all I want to do is fall asleep. So can you please try to keep the noise down. I don’t want to come back here and argue at this point.”
“I’ll try. Though I hope you don’t mind me asking, you’re not from around here are you?” he asked me.
“No I moved here a few weeks ago from America.”
“Ahh an American girl.”
“Yeah now I got to get back to sleep so can we please put this discussion to an end?” I snapped not wanting to get into a discussion about this when I had to be up by 6am for my 7:30 shift tomorrow.
“Alright love, I promise I’ll keep it down.”
“Thank you.” I then headed back into my apartment and fell right back asleep.
*Roger’s POV*
As I watched the cute girl go back into her apartment, I knew that now I had to talk to her at my next gig. Maybe I would suede her to go on a date with me.
*My POV*
A few days later it was now my double shift at the bar. I was getting drinks for people when the band soon came up and following the curly-haired guitarist was my noisy neighbor.
“Hello everybody, we’ve got—we’ve got a few fresh faces here. This is John Deacon our new bass player. And our new lead singer Freddie Buls-Bulsara. Freddie Bulsara.” I then took notice of the long haired bass player and the new lead singer who didn’t look like he was from Britain, he looked Middle eastern, maybe from India or something. But there was just something about him that looked right about him.
“That’s right.” The lead singer nodded.
“And of course Roger, biggest member of them all.” The guitarist spoke into the mic and I could hear a girl cry out.
“Hi Roger!” Some of the students cheered and that’s when Freddie spoke into the mic.
“Hello, all you beautiful people.” Of course one asshole had to be a racist as he cried out.
“Where’s Tim!? Who’s the Pakkie?” I rolled my eyes. See it was people like this that made me leave America, especially when you live in the Southern states, it was even worse. Some of the crowd agreed with the guy and that’s when the band began playing their set.
Freddie seemed to struggle with the microphone stand and I cringed as it made that horrible feedback sound. I hide my face for him until he finally just broke the mic off of it’s stand and the song began. I’ll admit hearing them all play together and Freddie’s voice, it was—unlike anything I’ve ever heard from any band. I bopped my head along to the song and kept my eyes on a certain drummer, without having him notice of course as I kept serving the drinks.
The band kept playing for about another hour or so, and I’ll also say that Freddie the new lead singer has made everyone in the room feel important, it was like he was reaching out to everyone in the audience, no matter who they were and made them feel important, even I felt that pull and would sometimes drift away from the bar and just stand amongst the crowd (which didn’t make my boss happy).
After the show I was cleaning up the bar when I heard a familiar voice say.
“So what did you think?” I stopped mid-cleaning and turned to see my neighbor leaning against the counter and I said.
“The band or are you just asking about you?”
“A little bit of both.” He smiled as he leaned further in towards me. “I saw you watching me.”
“How do you know I wasn’t looking at your lead singer?”
“Please love, if you were you’re head would’ve been moving around too much, you stayed standard right on me.” I rolled my eyes and said.
“You have quite an imagination.”
“Only when it involves you.” He said. Okay I get what he’s doing. He’s trying to smooth talk me, charm me and woo me till he gets his way with me. I grinned and leaned towards him and said.
“You know what?”
“What?” he said as he leaned closer towards me. I decided to toy with him a bit placing my hand on his bicep which was pretty buffed probably from years of drumming but I tossed the thought out of my head as I continued.
“You should come back later when you’ve learned a better pickup line.” His grin vanished as he looked like a kicked puppy as I leaned away from her and continued my work.
“So southern girls have a more fight to them, I like that in a woman. I find respect in that.” He said as he came around toward me.
“I hope you’re not trying to insult me.”
“Not at all, just making conversation. How long have you been here in London?”
“A couple weeks now. I only just started working here last week.”
“Does my southern bell have a name?” I looked up at him and he just looked at me with a gentle tilt of his head, like a golden retriever puppy.
“Why so keen on knowing my name?”
“I just figured since we’re neighbors and all, and since I was so rude as to not notice it before and not give you a proper British welcome, I would like to know the name of the cute neighbor next door.” I tried to hide my blush as I said.
“(Y/n) (l/n).”
“That’s a beautiful name, I’m Roger. Roger Taylor.” He said as he extended his hand out for me to take. Even though I was playing hard to get, it’d be rude if I denied a handshake so I took his hand, but instead of a handshake, Roger kissed my knuckles and I swore I felt my heart skip a beat, but of course I wasn’t going to tell him that.
A couple years went by and in 1973, I finally heard back from EMI about a position for their company, however the downside was that I was nothing more than a secretary to the main producer Ray Foster. So that meant just organizing papers, getting the coffee, boring stuff, never really get to touch anything music related, unless its passing him the records.
I was currently going through some papers at the front desk outside Ray’s office when I got buzzed in and the boss’s voice soon spoke up.
“(L/n), John’s bringing in my new signing band coming in today, make sure they’re all present before bringing them up to my office.”
“Right away sir, I’ll send them up once they’ve arrived.” I got up from my desk and walked towards the elevator and pressed the down button.
“Hold the elevator!” I held it and in walked in my good friend Mikaela. Now as I’ve stated before, I despised racism so when most of the people at EMI mostly the men never gave Mikaela the light of day, I decided to reach out my hand in friendship.
Since we’re both women in the workforce we might as well stick together.
“Thank you (y/n).”
“Anytime Mimi, so what have you got to do.”
“Gotta get these checks mailed out, how about you?”
“Boss man wants me to bring up a new band that EMI has signed up with.”
“Any idea who they are?”
“No idea, but they must be good if Ray signs them up, or if they come straight from John Reid himself.”
“Really?” I nodded as I hummed. Soon the elevator dinged as we reached the ground floor and as we walked out she said, “So we still on for our Happy hour?”
“Absolutely. After the week I’ve been having, I deserve a few drinks.”
“Alright, see you Thursday night.”
“Will do, pick you up at 7?” She nodded and then we went our separate ways. As I walked along the lobby I saw John Reid sitting at the lobby with a group of familiar boys. “Oh god, tell me this isn’t happening.” I muttered to myself.
Because amongst those boys was none other than Roger. Ever since the pub performance all those years ago, every day whenever he could whether it was at the pub or even when we would pass each other in the lobby or the hallway, he’d try to flirt with me trying to make me swoon like every other girl he’s screwed around with.
Of course every chance I turned down all his pickups and advances and now it seems like I’ll never escape from him. But not wanting to risk getting fired for keeping Mr. Foster waiting, I sucked it up and approached Mr. Reid.
“Mr. Reid.” He turned to look at me and I said, “I’m (y/n) (l/n). Mr. Foster’s assistant I was sent down to collect you and the band.”
“Ahh yes Miss (y/n).” He stood up from the chair and the two of us shook hands with each other. “Pleasure to meet you, I’d like to introduce you to Queen, EMI’s new signup.” I waved to the boys and that’s when Freddie spoke up.
“Wait, weren’t you a bartender at the pub near the University?”
“Yeah I was.”
“Oh darling you have got some explaining to do because this boy would not shut up when you had left the pub! Could not get him to stop talking about you.” Freddie spoke as he pointed to Roger.
“It was sickening.” Piped in John Deacon.
“Bugger off the lot of you.” Roger muttered.
“Alright enough you four, now then let’s not keep Ray waiting any longer, we’re ready to meet him when you are Miss (l/n).”
“Right this way gentlemen.” As we headed toward the elevator, my attention turned to Roger.
So he’s been talking about me huh? Never did I think he’d still be on me even to his bandmates. He’s definitely persistent I’ll give him that, but at this point I’m just not looking for a relationship at the moment.
Once we reached Mr. Foster’s office, he allowed me to come in saying that it was important that I stay for one big announcement that involved me. At first I thought it would have to do something of a promotion, like finally being able to work the controls of the booth but instead I got the news that I would be Queen’s assistant, which meant I had to check in on them day to day along with some guy named Paul Prenter.
My heart dropped but I swear I thought I saw Roger’s face perk up as he turned toward me.
“Sir are—are you sure I’m capable of doing something like this? I mean surely Queen doesn’t need two assistance……”
“I think it would be a wonderful idea.” Exclaimed Freddie.
“I surely wouldn’t mind it.” Brian soon spoke up.
“It’d be nice to have better company than these lot all the time.” John Deacon spoke up.
“In fact—she can be my personal assistant.” Roger piped in. Oh hell no.
“Seems the band agrees. You start tomorrow Miss (l/n).” John Reid said. Internally I was deflated more than anything of what I was hearing but I knew better than to cause a scene as I said.
“Can’t wait.” But it was spoken with a hint of sarcasm.
A few months go by and if I’m being honest, it wasn’t half bad being with the boys. I got to know them as they truly were and they were a bunch of really cool guys. John or as I’ve been allowed to call him, Deacy with his knowledge of electrical engineering, Brian’s love for astrophysics as well as animal rights especially for badgers, hedgehogs and foxes, Freddie I envy him because he’s given me such beautiful sketches and I wish I could draw half as good as he can.
And of course there’s Roger. Who continues to try and flirt with me but thanks to Deacy and Brian I can get back at him due to his major of being a dentist. But I’ll admit one thing, Roger does have his moments when he’s not trying to be Casanova like this one time when I was helping the boys get ready to preform on Top the Pops for their newest hit song ‘Killer Queen.’
I was with Deacy adjusting his jacket. Once I saw it was good enough I said.
“Alright, you’re all set.”
“Thanks (y/n), we’d be lost without you.”
“Oh stop it. Save that for Veronica.” Besides Fred, Deacy’s opened up more to me when it comes to relationship and lately he’s been seeing this girl named Veronica and I’ve wanted to hear every single detail of how they met and how each date has gone. Sometimes I even give him advice on how to act around her since poor baby he’s so terrible shy when it comes to dating, especially since he’s told me he really, really likes her.
“Sometimes I wish I hadn’t told you about her.”
“Oh come on then who would you go to for advice?”
“Touché, you make a good point.”
“Listen chaps it is going to be playback. Lip-sync is all that is required.” One of the BBC producers spoke up.
“We do know how to play our instruments.” Roger spoke up.
“You want me to lip-sync?” Freddie spoke up as he got in the producer’s face which made him back up just a bit but still hold his ground.
“I just don’t understand why we simply can’t perform live?” asked Brian.
“The audience will never know the difference.”
“We’ll know the bloody difference.”
“This is the BBC that’s how things are done around here. Don’t be a nuisance.” He then walked away.
“Well then you lads will have to make sure no one can tell if you’re faking it.”
“The way things are done here. We’re bolly old chap.” Roger mocked the producer as Brian then mocked out in a posh, snotty tone.
“This is the BBC.”
“I’m relieved.” Deacy spoke up.
“Yeah you would be.” Brian muttered.
“Like perfect performance.”
“Oi (y/n) if you’re done playing groupie get off the stage, they’re about to start filming!” Paul cried out. I turned towards him almost about to snap back a retort at him when Roger beat me to it.
“Prenter! You outta look into the mirror and say that to yourself, cause if anyone here is the groupie it’s you yah wanker!” At that comeback I actually laughed softly at the insult he gave to Paul. He turned his attention toward me and he bragged, “A smile and a laugh. Guess I’m getting close huh?”
“Please Taylor. One chivalrous deed doesn’t suede me to admit anything.”
“But I still managed to get you to smile, I count that as a win.” I rolled my eyes at him and said as I got off the stage.
“Just play your fake drums drummer boy.” And even though it was beyond my control, a light blush came across my face.
Even with it being a ‘fake’ performance, the boys gave it their all and the song became a huge hit, especially in Japan where the boys did their tour there. Then there was the tour of America which the album ‘Sheer Heart Attack’ hit the charts back home.
I told the guys about my hometown and they tried to convince me to let them see my home but I told them that we had too tight a schedule but next time when there was time, I would show them where I grew up.
Now came time for another album to be recorded and after getting the approval from Foster about the new idea that Freddie had for the ‘A Night at the Opera’, we were on our way to a nice secluded recording studio out in Wales by the summer of 1975.
A few days after getting settled in, I was walking along the outside of the fields, having flashbacks of my grandparent’s farm when I heard a piano playing inside the studio. I walked in and I saw Deacy playing an electric piano and I could hear him softly mutter to himself.
I leaned by the door and kept quiet so that I wouldn’t disturb him as he kept muttering the lyrics and writing them down. Even though Deacy’s always said he’s not a singer, I can’t help but admire what he was humming and muttering to himself. I guess he must’ve seen me because next thing he did, he jumped up startled.
“Sorry, but you don’t have to stop on my account.”
“Just how much did you hear?”
“Heard about enough. It’s beautiful Deacy.” I walked inside the studio and sat down beside him and said, “What’s it called?”
“‘You’re my best friend’. I wrote it for Veronica.”
“Awww.” I awed as I placed my hand over my heart.
“But I doubt the lads will want to play it. Not really rock and roll enough for them for what I imagine it to be.”
“Don’t say that. Maybe they will, hell you play this for Fred and he’ll be on your side and make it go on the album.”
“Thanks (y/n).”
“Plus I know that once Veronica hears this, she’ll fall even deeper in love with you.”
“Oh come off it….”
“I’m serious. Sure some people think it’s cliché and maybe corny but to some girls that just proves a guy really cares about a woman. Especially if that guys a talented songwriter like you.” I said as I sat down beside him and playfully shoved his shoulder with mine.
“I just—wanted to do something for her. I know I haven’t been the best boyfriend to her, especially being away from her this long. I just want her to know that I’m always thinking of her.”
“And she will.” I sighed deeply.
“Okay what’s on your mind?”
“What do you mean?”
“No one sighs like that unless there’s something bothering them, so c’mon out with it. You’re always getting me to spill my guts, now it’s your turn missy.” I playfully scowled at him but caved in because I can never say no to Deacy’s adorable face so I said.
“Okay, there’s—actually it’s been going through my head for the past few years now. I mean I don’t know whether it’s this place, being away from the city but I……” my heart raced and my palms felt sweaty as I finally muttered, “I—I think I love Roger.” Deacy remained silent before finally saying.
“About bloody time you said it.”
“What now?”
“(Y/n) no offense love but you’re not as discreet as you think you are. There’s been so much sexual tension between you two that it’s unbelievable about how thick it is.”
“Well I can’t just get up and tell him how I feel?”
“He’s been trying so hard to get with you since day one, even before we met you last year he’d always talk about the cute neighbor next door to him. Why can’t you just put the poor boy out of his misery.”
“There’s…..there’s more to it than that.” I said solemnly as I fiddled with my nails. Deacy’s eyes became concerned and he said.
“He didn’t do anything wrong to you, did he?”
“No it’s just—” I sighed heavily and said as I fully turned to face him, “Okay, you know how I told you guys the reason why I moved to America was because of the problems going on?” he nodded and I said, “Well—what I’m about to tell you, I’ve never told anyone else, so you have to promise me you won’t tell a soul. Not even Veronica.”
“You know you don’t have to tell me,”
“I know but—I’ve been holding it in for so long, and you’re the most trustworthy person I know. So promise me Deacy.”
“Cross my heart and hope to die.” I sighed deeply and said.
“Okay. Back in college I…..I once knew a guy that was exactly like Roger. He loved to flirt and give out pickup lines. He wasn’t bad looking either, dark brown hair and green eyes. Well, one day during a break in class he came up to me and started flirting with me. And not having a boyfriend before, I—I fell for the pickup lines and the flirtation and soon we started dating.”
“And then he cheated on you?” Deacy asked. I scoffed out a laugh and said.
“I wish, what happened was way worse.”
“Oh god he—he didn’t……”
“No, no not that worse. Don’t worry Deacy.” He sighed with relief for a brief second before listening once more, “Well we dated for about a year and a half and it was our anniversary so I decided to make him some cookies. I went up to the frat boy house he was in and just before I knocked on the door, I heard him and his friends talking.” I trailed off as tears filled my eyes.
I tried to keep them in as I looked up and laughed out icily as I continued,
“Apparently they were all having a contest to see who could get the biggest loser on campus…..and he won. My picture was plastered everywhere all over campus. He stopped talking to me and turned on me by calling me ‘desperate’ and ‘naïve’ for not seeing it earlier. He never loved me; I was nothing but a joke to him.”
“Oh (y/n).”
“The entire student body was against me. So much so that I had to drop out of college and I had to move here. Because even when I wasn’t in school, the teasing and harassment still happened whenever I was out in public. So I moved here where no one knew who I was.” I felt Deacy wrap his arms around me as he lent his shoulder for me to cry on. “Since then, I’ve vowed to close my heart to any flirting or any guy that would try to hurt me again…..and knowing Roger with his groupies I—”
“I get it. What that bastard did was unforgiveable and I can understand where you’re coming from. But you do know that not all guys are like him, right?”
“Of course I do. You, Bri and Fred are the proof of that. Sometimes Rog is also in there but, I’m just—afraid that, even if I do admit to him my real feelings for him……”
“I know. Sometimes Rog can be—a bit much, but when he sets his mind to something he won’t ever stop. No matter who or what gets in his way. Like remember the day you got the stomach flu?” I nodded recalling when he came over and helped take care of me, “Well you may not have known this, but we were in the middle of recording with Reid checking in on us. He actually fought to try and leave just so he could take care of you.”
“He seriously did that? He—he just told me you guys were rehearsing, not recording.”
“Well we were. He may not seem to want to appear soft on most days, but when it comes to you, he’ll drop anything just to make sure you’re okay.” I softly smiled and wiped away my tears and said as I separated from him.
“Thanks for listening Deacy, you’re the best.”
“I know.” He said with a shrug. Before grinning cheekily and chuckled softly which made me chuckle.
“Now you promise not to say anything to the guys?”
“Say what?” He had this twinkle in his eye that told me that he was only playing and I smiled and thanked him once more before leaving the studio to tell him that I needed to get dinner started if the guys were gonna eat on time before they dove too deep into the recording and they end up missing another meal.
About a week later I was sitting outside on the porch swing looking out into the field. It was a nice cool summer day after all the rain we’ve been having the last three days so it was a nice change of scenery weather wise.
“May I join you?” I turned around and there stood Roger.
“I don’t mind.” He then sat himself down just a couple inches away from me on the swing.
“I’ll admit I at first didn’t like this place but it’s growing on me.”
“That’s the thing with you city boys, you just don’t get it.”
“And what would you know country girl?”
“My grandparents owned a farm down in Arkansas. I used to always visit them every summer and Christmas before they both died.”
“I’m so sorry for your loss (y/n).”
“It’s fine. It was over 10 years ago when they died, but I appreciate it Rog.” The two of us sat there for awhile softly swinging on the swing until I finally broke the silence, “Hey Roger,” he turned to me and I said, “I—I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“Well ever since I moved here, I feel like I haven’t been all that nice to you. And I…..I just want to make sure that you’re not mad or anything.”
“No, no in fact, I wanted to come out here and apologize for some of the things I’ve said to you. It wasn’t right of me to just flirt with you right out of the blue. Also I apologize for keeping you up all night with my drums.”
“That apology I can accept.” We both softly chuckled and I said.
“So do—do you think we can start over?”
“I’d like that. I’m Roger Taylor, nice to meet you new neighbor.” I smiled at him and said as we both shook hands with each other.
“(Y/n) (l/n).” With the hatchet buried and a new bond forged, I thought it was safe to say that Roger and I were now starting a new relationship.
We stayed outside for a good while when I finally turned around to look at him and just like the night we first met, my heart raced at seeing his blonde hair shine like the sun. It was like if Adonis and an angel had a baby, then Roger Taylor would be the end result of their bond. As he turned toward me, I quickly looked back out toward the field and I heard him softly laugh.
“I saw that.”
“You’re so full of it Taylor.” The two of us softly laughed and I broke the silence, “But you are right earlier. This view, this place it’s just so beautiful. I’d love to live in a place like this. No noise from the city, perfect view of the sunrise and sunset. And nothing but greenery for miles and miles ahead.”
“You know I’d be willing to buy you a house like that.” I turned to him and we looked at each other.
“I can’t ask that of you.”
“Why not?”
“Well the well earned money is yours, and I’d rather not take what you and the boys have worked so hard to get.”
“And I can do whatever I want with it, and if I want to buy a country house for a dear friend of mine, then I’ll do it.” I smiled softly and said.
“Thanks Rog, I appreciate it.” I then felt his fingertips softly touch mine and I looked straight into his blue eyes and he looked back at mine.
“(Y/n) I—I know I’ve been hounding you for years on the subject, but that’s because I—I’ve never really known how else to talk to a girl. I know you must think of me as some pigheaded flirt but—I just never knew how else to talk to you. So I…..I hope I don’t ruin this newly formed friendship by say that…..I like you. I really, really, really like you (y/n). These past few years with you have just been…..a blessing to me. And—god now I’ve gone and fucked this up hadn’t—”
I stopped his rambling by placing my lips against his. I felt his right hand go to my waist while his left cupped the side of my face as we deepened the kiss. I slowly lifted my hand and allowed my fingers to comb through his soft blonde hair, we gave each other a couple more pecks and I said.
“Congrats Taylor, you finally got me the right way.”
“You mean—”
“Truthfully I’ve had a crush on you since the night we met.”
“So I was right?” he teased.
“Now don’t go getting a big head drama queen. I just….Can you promise me something Roger?”
“Anything.”
“I—Can we please just take this one day at a time? Back home there was something that really hurt me, I’d rather not talk about it to you just yet, cause I feel like I won’t be able to be stable as I say it.”
“I won’t pressure you for anything (y/n). We can take this as slow as you want.”
“Also, I know how you are with your hookups with groupies. I—I just need to know that you won’t cheat on me or break my heart.”
“I promise (y/n). The only girl I want hanging around my arm is you. I wouldn’t be this persistent if I didn’t want anything more than a hookup with you.” I leaned my head against his shoulder and he wrapped his arms around me and I felt him kiss the side of my head. “I love you so much (y/n).”
“I love you too Roger.”

March 4, 2018, San Francisco, CA
I was really excited about this show, the second at the Fillmore in as many nights, because I knew they'd be changing the setlist up a fair amount, as they always do when they play more than one show in a row in the same place. I was even more excited when a bit before the show Flans posted on Facebook that there would be fifteen new songs, which was practically a full half of the show!
They opened with "Pencil Rain"--that one was definitely a surprise. I think the only time I've seen that song outside of the two Lincoln shows I've been to was at one of the Brooklyn New Year's Eve shows a few months before this. I don't think it's one of the absolute best songs on Lincoln, there are definitely other songs I'd rather see, but any song from that album is gonna be some degree of amazing, so it was definitely cool to see it.
Afterwards, Flans said that they know it's disappointing when bands play too many new songs (WRONG--or at least, wrong when the new songs in question are as fantastic as the ones on I Like Fun!), so when they said they were going to play a new song we should pretend it was our favorite song, and they will accept fake emotion.
They played "All Time What," then John said they should introduce the next song by talking about "what makes this song so this song-y."
The song was "Why Does the Sun Shine?", once again with JF singing and JL talking. The heat and light of the sun were caused by the nuclear reaction between "things made out of stuff, microscopic dust, the feelings that separate us, and death." (The last couple made it a very Linnellian list.) There was also some adorable spazziness from him.
After that Flans said half the show would be different than the night before and the other half would be "mind-numbingly the same." He said we'd see that the banter we thought was improvised wasn't (he was joking, but I did see them recycle some banter on this tour, to my slight disillusionment). Then John said that they wouldn't be playing the songs we came back for, and Flans said they were all about "delivering disappointment" and were like General Tso's chicken.
Then Flans said he'd just gotten Netflix and so has been watching a lot of Netflix, including a documentary he'd just watched about the czars. He said that also today "I went to a restaurant where everything was fried, because who wants to live forever?" and that he was "just living my vampire life." Then he said, "We have a day off in Eugene, because who would want a day off in San Francisco? And you wonder why we're bitter." Then he asked John, "How are your problems?" "My problems are awesome."
Next they played "Mammal," which was quite exciting, and then came the next episode in the continuing saga of "Will John Linnell ever manage to successfully sing 'Mrs. Bluebeard' without screwing up the lyrics somehow?" This time he managed to get very close to the end smoothly, and I was trying to somehow send him some sort of mental encouragement ("Almost there! I believe in you!"), but then he messed up the very end, siiiiigh. At this point I pretty much gave up and resigned myself to the fact that he was never going to manage to get it right.
Next they played "She's Actual Size." I've seen this song a ton, but outside of a couple of Apollo 18 shows in the past few years it's almost all been contained within the confines of the very very first shows I went to on the Mink Car tour, back when it featured the epic Dial-A-Drum-Solo bit with Dan Hickey, which made this another surprise. It is a good song both on the album and live, but I've never been a fan of part of the arrangement they've used all the times I've seen it, where towards the end it gets way slowed down and Flans is singing in falsetto and all that (I'm fine with his falsetto at other times, it just bugs me in this one specific instance). But up until that point seeing it was fun.
Next was "The Statue Got Me High," to my great disappointment on keyboard again, but this time I managed to push myself past that disappointment and still really dig the performance, which was good because it's very close to the top in my list of all-time most-beloved songs and I do want to actually be able to enjoy it.
After that John got his accordion on ("Oh now you do," I couldn't help thinking). He introduced the next song as being "one of our tired old songs." When they started playing I saw that was an assessment I most definitely would not agree with, as the song was another one of my all-time favs (it was in fact my favorite song way back when I started getting more deeply into TMBG when I was in high school): "Turn Around"! So I was thrilled about that, of course!
Next they played "When the Lights Come On," which remains my favorite of the new songs they've actually been doing live to see. Afterwards, Flans said that it was from their new album I Like Fun, "available on Bar/None records and tapes." Then he said they really do have it available on vinyl, and that the vinyl was made in the Czech Republic, which is where they make the good stuff. John said if you want "the flat ones that actually play" you have to go there. Then Flans said that records look like calendars, and then was joking about someone in the audience who made a noise like they thought that was "a cruel burn."
Next they played "The Mesopotamians." I'd actually managed to enjoy it the night before after feeling burned out on it for some time, but this time I felt sick of it again.
Afterwards, Flans pointed out that the Oscars were currently happening (I actually didn't know that until he said it--I don't pay much attention to that sort of thing), and that we were all "out of the loop about something that's going to be appalling everyone." Then he was talking about when they announced the wrong winner for Best Picture last year--"What a shitshow. That was the ultimate 'you had one job.'"
They played "This Microphone," and then another surprise that I was really excited to see: "Cyclops Rock"! That's one of my favs on Mink Car and it's totally kickass live (I am an eternal sucker for really high-energy rockin' Flansongs live), and it had popped up a couple of times at other shows I'd been to recently, but not much, so yeh it was a lot of fun.
Next they talked about how Dial-A-Song is back. Flans said some of the songs have had "startling" videos that have gotten Youtube comments just saying something like "Fuck." John said, "That's the response we've been hoping for for 35 years." Then he said his favorite comment they've received is "What sorcery is this?" He asked Flans if he objected to the "Fuck" cos it needed a parental advisory (this amused me cos Flans swears like crazy), and Flans said not at all.
Then they returned to the previous night's discussion of this Tony Robbins guy. Flans said, "He's not an evangelist cos he doesn't have a soul," and told us again that he'd just watched a "fake documentary" about him. John said their conversation wasn't accurately conveying how "completely crazy" he is. Flans said that he "uses disruptive language to break down barriers of communication," which basically means saying "fuck" to "someone who looks related to my great-aunt." John said that was disruptive, and Flans agreed that it was "like being slapped in the face is disruptive." Then John said that if they tried they could be "the Tony Robbins of rock bands."
They closed out the first set the same way they did the night before: "Hey, Mr. DJ, I Thought You Said We Had a Deal" straight into "Birdhouse in Your Soul," which is seriously SO MUCH ROCKIN' OUT AT ONCE, it's almost too much.
The second set started with the Quiet Storm contra-alto clarinet version of "Older" like usual. Then Flans made Marty play part of some Phil Collins song again (or maybe it was a Genesis song and not him solo, I don't even know, I hate Phil Collins and did not recognize it).
They played "I Like Fun," and then Curt got out his euphonium. Flans said the euphonium is what they give you in band when you're too small to play the tuba, and John said euphonium isn't the real name of the instrument, it's a euphemism (a joke that made the word nerd in me happy).
So next they played "Shoehorn with Teeth," which is always a ton of fun live, and I really loved it on accordion (what, as opposed to all the songs I don't love on accordion?). Marty was playing some big bell, and Flans was trying to figure out what it was. Then, he said it wasn't what he thought it was, and he was just confused cos he was getting high from the pot people were smoking. John said it was particularly stinky pot (I'm reasonably bothered by the smell of pot just as a general rule, but I can confirm that whatever people were smoking here seemed to smell even worse than usual), and Flans said it's what they say is "the good stuff" on cop shows. Then John said something about a character played by Tony Roberts in Serpico, who's supposed to be the cool cop but isn't really. Then they were saying that their cultural references are going to be very specific now--they're only going to talk about him, Tony Robbins, Tom Robbins, and Tom Robinson.
Next they played "A Self Called Nowhere," and I know I'm writing some variation of "it was so incredibly special for me" in every single one of these reviews, but that's because it's always true. I know the first time is always going to be the most special time, just because it was the first and I'd been wanting this so intensely for such a long time, but something really great about the times I've seen it since the first couple is they've included Curt on trumpet (since he wasn't with them for the early part of the tour), and I always think he adds so much to the songs he appears on.
Next they played "How Can I Sing Like a Girl?" I saw that one on accordion a ton when they were doing it duo a lot on I think it was the Join Us tour, and it was great that way--I preferred it duo just cos my heart is now and forever all about duo stuff, but this arrangement was fantastic too.
Next they played "Istanbul," the duo version with them being really silly. During the part where Flans is saying "Take me back, please take me back," in falsetto and John's saying "Nooooo" in a really deep voice, John said "Even Tony Robbins says no" one of the times. Like the other times I've seen them do it duo on this tour, the full band came back for the crazy jam session at the end.
They played "Particle Man," then did another awesome big surprise song: "Dig My Grave"--GOD is that song fun live. (It's only just now occurring to me how many of the songs that I was happily surprised by during this run of shows are from Apollo 18, and having the thought that they would've needed to rehearse them for the Apollo 18 show they'd done the previous month, so that's probably why they were sprinklig them into the set here and there.) There were strobes during it, and afterwards Flans said they should've mentioned that there were strobes, but they'd forgotten, and John said that after there were strobes they couldn't remember anything (they'd had roughly the same exchange at the aforementioned Apollo 18 show). Flans said it was like how the kick drum gives you a heart attack, and then recessitates you, and John said Marty always has to play the kick drum an even number of times or they'll die. Flans said "Clear!" (all dramatically like they do on medical TV shows), and then said he doesn't even understand why they say that, and John said "I think that's a Scientology thing." Then Flans said maybe it's just a blessing.
They played "Wicked Little Critta" (as usual the best part about the song for me was watching the closeups of John's hands on his Kaoss Pad and keyboard that were being projected on the screen on the back of the stage--that's about the only time I actually like the screen being there, normally I just find it unpleasantly distracting), and then another big surprise song: the title track from that album. That stirred up a lot of Feelings for me, as it was the very first song they played at my very first show.
They played "I Left My Body," then Flans said that they'd someday figure out a way to do a three-night stand. He said they'd probably have to become a jam band. John said people didn't seem very enthusiastic, and Flans said they'd be drawing an entirely different crowd. John asked if people were yelling "Gross," but then he figured out that they were yelling about the Black Crowes, and Flans explained (like the day before) that there was a poster in their dressing room from a time they played five nights in a row here at the Fillmore and that the poster was "mocking" them.
Someone was yelling out for "Spider" and Flans said that they'd play it even though they're from New York, where the rule is you're not allowed to play requests. He said he'd gone to a sandwich shop where a woman asked the guy to heat up her sandwich and he said "We believe you'd prefer it cold." They actually did play it, but John looked so unenthusiastic when Flans said they were going to. But I mean he didn't really have much choice, he would've looked like a jerk if he'd refused to after Flans already said they were going to. Anyway it was an interesting version of the song, particularly since he played it on accordion (he just happened to already have it on for the following song).
The next song in question was "Subliminal," my reaction to which can be summed up by the "Oh fuck yes" that popped into my head as soon as they started playing it. As my friend Ant put it "That song is better live than it has any right to be," and it's another classic I've only seen a handful of times. I was disappointed by the lack of fake backwards singing at the end, but otherwise it was perfect.
Next they played "Let Me Tell You About My Operation" (my current fav Flansong and absolutely amazing live, so always a welcome addition to the set!). Then there were band intros and the main set wrapping up with "Doctor Worm."
The first encore started with "Spy." During the improv part (which is really what makes that song live), John was playing a sample I heard him employ at several other shows, but I'm not sure what the source is, it's just a woman singing "Now the night has gone."
Next they played "Fingertips," which I've always really loved live but I'm sorry to say I've been getting into burnout with it just recently due to overexposure. However, this particular performance did feature a notable variation: During "I Walk Along Darkened Corridors," Dan appeared up in the balcony and finished the song there! (He actually might've shown up there earlier than that, I'm not sure, but that was when I noticed him.)
The second encore started with "Ana Ng," so between that and "Everything Right is Wrong Again" the previous night I got both my tattoo songs in San Francisco. And they closed the show with "New York City."
So all in all this was a most excellent show. After my prior frustration on this trip with having no variation in the setlist between the first show and the second, it was really exciting to get so many different and exciting surprises between these two Fillmore shows.
The final and really not very exciting JL wardrobe report: the long-sleeved black shirt made another appearance.

“(Y/N) (Y/L/N): From Music Video Extra to Real Life Girlfriend Real Quick”
“More than 5 seconds: Luke Hemmings shows off new girlfriend in santa monica”
“(Y/N) (Y/L/N): To Amuse or Use Luke Hemmings?”
Those were some of the many headlines of different articles talking about your relationship with Luke. Yes, they were showing negativity, and they hurt you because they weren’t at all true. Why not speak up, right? But you chose not to. You shielded your actual feelings because you didn’t want to stress anyone else out, especially Luke. Having him as a boyfriend has its cons, commonly with the media and paparazzi. You knew that this was bound to happen, so you just braved the media with a fake smile.
One cold afternoon, you and Luke decided to act touristy in New York before he has a show that same night, alongside the boys and Eleanor. You needed a getaway from Los Angeles, and you thanked the heavens that you had a 2 week break before you go back. Much to your luck, that day was a very happy one. Eating pizza in different pizza places with the boys, taking a lot of photos courtesy of Eleanor and strolling around Times Square and Central Park with all good vibes?
Shit, things were going right for once.
When you guys were headed to enter at the back exit of the venue, the boys decided to meet some fans and take some pictures with them too first. For sure, Eleanor was down since she’s in charge of making the tour videos. You joined it because why the heck not? You want to see your boyfriend happy and maybe help take pictures of him and the fans anyways.
Walking towards the long lines, fans were instantly screaming excitedly, their idols right within their vicinity. Just thinking about how hardworking the boys have been with their music and their fans loving it so much because it’s relatable and well-written warms your heart so much. Not just that, the fans were so orderly; no mobbing nor grabbing of the boys’ hair or clothing while they await their turns. Seeing their genuine smiles is a quick happy pill.
“(Y/N), can you take our photo?” Luke handed you a fan’s phone for you to capture their cute moment, which was the girl was being piggybacked by Luke. As you did such, Luke gave you a hug before you handed him back the phone.
“Thanks, babe. You’re the best!” He thanked, kissing your temple and getting aww’s from the fans.
“(Y/N)! (Y/N)!” You are called out by a group of different fans who just finished taking their photos by the boys, which naturally urged you to approach them. They didn’t expect that you’d respond, making them squeal.
“Hi girls! How are you doing?” You greeted.
“We’re doing great! Super excited for the show later!” One girl shared.
“Same! I’ve been waiting for this day for 2 months.
“Hyped and ready to cry.”
That last response made you laugh. You asked other questions while those fans did the same with you. Pretty much, it was a back and forth interview. Your responses are in bold.
“Are you all from New York?”
“Born and raised.”
“I’m studying here, but originally from Maine.”
“Any of you bring posters or anything else?”
“I have a mini poster that says “let’s take shots!” in all caps!”
“I have two roses, in case the other one gets lost.”
“What songs are you ready to hear live?”
“Valentine! This is my first 5SOS concert, and I really love that song.”
“Lie to Me. Gives so much goosebumps.”
“Vapor. Pretty old but it’s really beautiful to listen.”
Switch sides.
“What’s Luke like when you’re hanging out alone in his house?”
“Always chill, really. To be honest, he’s into cuddles. But one main thing that makes me come back more is Petunia, so shh.” You joked, putting your pointer finger against your lips.
“What’s your most favorite thing about Luke?”
“He makes me laugh over small things, like sending me random boomerangs when I’m in class.”
“How about your least favorite?”
“One would be when I’m studying, he tries to distract me a whole lot with almost anything his mind can think. Another is hoarding my instant ramen noodles.”
“How did you guys confess your feelings?”
“New Years Eve. We were really drunk and just admitted it. You now what they say, drunk words are sober thoughts.” You half-lied.
“So is the sex great?” One fan fired at you, getting everyone’s attention. You were put on the spot, getting giggly and slightly pressured.
“Best sex ever.” You whispered away, getting them to squeal more. Another fan asked you if she could have a selfie with you, which you happily accepted and then smiled at the camera.
“Thanks a bunch, (Y/N). Let me just say this, you are so talented and screw the haters! I can’t wait what you’ll do next.” She compliments, your heart feeling warm once more as you gave her a hug as a sign of thankfulness. “Thank you, love. I appreciate it very much.”
“(Y/N) (Y/L/N) is a user!” You suddenly heard someone shout.
“(Y/N), you can fuck off!”
“(Y/N), leave Luke alone! You don’t deserve him!”
These phrases were attacks on you, and you froze in fright and anger. You turn to where those fans were and bound to speak your mind, but was stopped by Eleanor, whose hand gripped on your arm.
“Not worth it, (Y/N). Now come on, the boys are entering inside and we should too.” Following orders, you bid goodbye to the fans and finally entered the venue, which was a lot warmer than the chilly weather outside.
-
“Thinking 'bout you lots lately, have you been eating breakfast alone like me?”
The show was in full swing. The lighting was on point, good vibes and music too. You were at the balcony area, jamming to Moving Along and swaying your hips alongside Eleanor, who just finished filming excerpts for the video. As the boys played the last chords of the song, the next part would be talking of some sort, which could be a giving thanks one or a roasting session, pretty much anything.
“New York, how are you feeling?!” Luke hyped, the screams of the fans getting louder.
“You guys have been awesome so far, and wow, I love my job so much!”
“God, Luke, how many times have you said that on this tour?” Calum asks humorously.
“Too much! But shit, thanks for all the support you’ve given Youngblood!” He raised his mic stand, having some lights flash behind him as he did. As he put the stand down, he looked over at Michael, about to speak again but chiller.
“Let’s get a bit serious for a moment, guys. Hey, Michael. I have a question for you.”
“What’s on your mind, Luke?”
“So, you and Crystal are going 4 years strong now, right?” Luke starts, getting some cheers from the audience.
“Yup, 4 happy years yeah!” More cheers erupted.
“Nice one, buddy! Moving on, did you or Crystal get any hate about that? I’m pretty curious.” Yup, Luke just did that.
“We did, but it was mostly on her. It made me sad when she’s sad whenever she comes across tweets towards her. There have been times where she was crying to me because it got too much.” Michael’s happy expression turned sour.
“Sending hate is really low of someone, honestly. When you support the band, you shouldn’t judge whoever they want to date.” Ashton speaks up.
“I have another thing I want to say if you guys don’t mind. So awhile ago, I was taking pictures with a bunch of you guys, then I overheard some fans bashing on my girlfriend. That’s really uncool and hurts a lot to hear.” Luke confronts, disappointed. The crowd grew silent, so intensely it could be cut with as a knife.
“I heard the same with Eleanor actually. Really, guys? How would you feel if you hear when someone says bad things to your friends or family when you’re around?” Calum adds, looking down at his shoes afterwards and adjusting his bass guitar strings.
“To be honest, it’s better to send positivity than negativity, it’s what we need today. If you don’t like them, fine go ahead. Just don’t be vocal about it especially online because we see everything. And to (Y/N), I know it’s a pretty public way to proclaim it, but I truly love you.” Your heart jumped. This is the first time he’s said the big “L” word towards you, full-heartedly and romantically. Not counting the platonic ones from when you were still just friends.
“Aww, too much feels tonight! Fuck hate, love love love! Now, the next song is Talk Fast! Let’s go!” Ashton beamed before hitting the first beats of the song on his drum kit. You continued to watch Luke from above, his purple glittery eyeshadow sparkling in the light and gripping on the microphone as he sings those lyrics. He noticed, giving you a cheeky wink which made you shake your head in flattery and the crowd go wild again.
-
“Nice show, fellas!” You hear some crew members say to the boys from outside. They just finished, and you and Eleanor were by the dressing room, opening up the bottle of Jack Daniels and a liter bottle of rootbeer. Trust me, this is good shit. Mixing the concoction on a pitcher, you could hear the door creak open, signaling you that the boys are going inside. Turning around, you see 4 sweaty boys, still on a high after performing and holding red cups already.
“Fuck, never gets old!” Michael cheers, lying down on the couch. “What you making over there, babe?” Calum approaches Eleanor from behind, hugging her waist and nuzzling his head on her shoulder.
“Rootbeer and Jack Daniels. Figured we should try something new, something that isn’t Corona.” Eleanor keeps mixing before removing the spoon to take a sip. Her face puckers up a bit.“This is good! Get your red cups, guys!” You were first in line, pouring the mix on your cup, sipping it. It was strong but sweet.
“I love it!” You continued drinking, but as you stopped, your eyes focused on Luke, sitting on the couch and scrolling through phone. Making your way to him, you sat beside him, putting your head on his shoulder. “Whatcha looking at?”
“Twitter. A lot of fans took videos of that band speech awhile ago, and it’s getting popular.” He answered in monotone, eyes still glued on his phone. In order to get his full attention, you stood up and got his phone from his grasp
“What the fuck, babe?” He complained, arms crossed before standing up. You forgot for a second that he was really tall, urging your head to tilt upwards.
“Can we talk outside first, Luke?” You bluntly ask. When he nods, you discreetly exited the room, but you hear someone say “oh shit” before you close the door. Walking to find a hidden spot where no one is around quietly, Luke momentarily felt he was in trouble. Was it because he confronted his fans like that or suddenly putting you on the spot with the big “L”? Finally, you found a spot which was near an exit, then Luke broke the silence, nervous.
“Okay, I don’t know for sure what I did to make you annoyed or whatever, so please te-“ You cut him off by softly planting your lips on his, tiptoeing to reach his height. Well, slightly.
One hand was on his shoulder and the other was on his cheek. His hand went under your shirt, feeling his fingers linger on my skin. His vacant hand went to your waist. He wanted more by tugging on your shirt, but you let go before he did could remove it, your forehead resting on his so you could breathe for a bit. His blue eyes opened slowly to yours eyes, giving him a loving smile.
“Luke, I love you so much too.” Pretty cheesy you thought, but it made the butterflies in your stomach go away. He was everything you wanted in this life. Luke was on cloud nine, lifting you up, your legs entangled on his waist and his hands under your thighs for support.
“You are worth more that the haters, alright? They’ll go through me if they attack again.”
“You know I can defend myself, right?” You played.
“But let me help you, it helps me with my self-esteem.” He wiggled his eyebrows.
“Whatever, babe. Shut up and kiss me again.” He did as told, his lips crashing your alcohol dripped lips. Tilting your head a bit, his mouth opened up a bit so you could get more access. He bit your lower lip in between, making you moan.
“That never gets old.” He says in between kissing.
“That’s what makes me love you more.”

2034, Los Angeles
“Oh yay! Thank you very much, goodbye.” You hung up the phone call. It was the designer in charge of finalizing the details on your gown that will be worn in your Australian premiere of Take Me or Leave Me.
As you did such, Stella walks in the room, holding on her fuzzy bunny Kira. You couldn’t decipher what she was feeling as she kept a straight face, but you can see her sleepy eyes blinking slowly.
“Morning, bub. Come stay in bed with me, let’s have breakfast in bed.” You insisted, patting the vacant side of your bed. She comes closer and tugged on the bedsheets, entering herself inside but still with a frown.
“How was your day yesterday with Mark? He told you that you watched numerous films and ate a lot pizza.”
“I did, and it was really fun. How was last night for you?”
“Really fun. Date nights with uncle Tim are filled with jokes, awkwardness and really good food.” She smiles, then frowns again.
“Are you okay, Stella? You’ve been frowning since you lied in bed with me.”
“Well, I need to meet up someone tomorrow, but I don’t know what to do next.” She squirms, instantly hid herself in the blankets.
“Stella, come on, talk to me.” You try to pull down the sheets, but Stella’s grip was stronger.
“Stella! I need to meet up with Stella. She’ll be here tomorrow.”
“O-kay, but where could she be right now?” You squint your brows at her nonsense.
“Sydney, Australia with her dad Luke Hemmings.” You froze. Your grip of the blanket softened, lifting it.
“You’re not Stella?” You were in disbelief, thinking this is a nightmare and very eager to wake up. You pinched your side, wincing. Sadly, you’re awake.
“Hello, mum.” Rebecca crawled out from the covers, hearing the strong Australian accent just like his.
“Oh my god, you’re Rebecca?” She nods slowly. You put your hand on your mouth, trying to comprehend the situation.
“Stella and I, we switched places. She wanted to see dad and I wanted to see you. I’ve been waiting for this moment to happen, and I wanted you to love me as me, not as Stella.” Rebecca explained in full in order for you to catch on why she is here. You wanted to cry, but first you gave her a heartfelt hug. “Oh poppet, I have loved you all this time. I missed you.”
“You called me poppet. Dad still calls me that.”
“That was always our nickname for you because you laughed at the sound of Stella’s mouth bubbles when they pop a lot, which is also why we called Stella bub.”
“I missed you so much too, mum.” As you were a having a moment, it was cut as you hear Mark crying a bit as he held your breakfast tray. “I’m so sorry, miss. This just made me happy.” He put it down and exits quietly, also closing the door. “So what happens now? Will you switch us back?” Her blue eyes she inherited from her father looked nervous.
“Well, technically, you belong with your dad and Stella belongs with me.”
“Wow. This set-up is such a bummer, mom.”
“I know, poppet. I’m sorry that’s what we planned.” You remained silent, letting some tears out.
“They’ll be in Los Angeles tomorrow. Dad has a few shows here, working in the studio all week with the band and attending the VMAs too. Don’t you get invited to go to the VMAs every year?”
“I do, but I stopped because-”
“Dad was there.” She finishes your sentence, disheartened.
“Yes.” You frowned at the fact. Just imagine you going right after that divorce and the years after, it would cause tension and a topic different media outlets would use to their advantage. Just no.
“Well then. You better tell Gina that you’re going and get the show on the road!” Stella cheers, getting up from the bed and raising her arms in celebration. “Yeah, let’s get it.” You say, anxiously dreading with what’s to come.
-
“I fucking can’t with this.” You kept going in and out of your walk-in closet, breathing out the smoke from your e-cigarette which you haven’t used since the divorce out of stress. Mark was also there, holding some outfit choices you picked earlier. Gina just arrived 10 minutes, being oriented by Mark that you know about the situation. She was also in the room, contacting the organizers of the VMAs of the last minute changes to your acceptance of invitation and arrival.
“I haven’t seen Luke Hemmings in 10 years, although hearing about him and his personal and band life wasn’t easy to swerve away. And to see him tomorrow already? I’m not mature enough for this!” You ranted, brushing away some hair because it was messed up. Pacing the room back in fort, breathing through the e-cigarette and letting out more smoke, you spoke up again.
“If he didn’t drive me crazy and angry all the time, we would still be married.” You made your way to Mark, comparing out the different outfits. “Gina, dear, which do you like better?”
Gina, who just finished texting the final details, looked up from her phone and examined closely what you chose. One outfit was a red plunging neckline, spaghetti strap dress with a slit up until your whole leg with red ensembles, and the other was a black dress also with a plunging neckline with a much shorter slit on the side with black heels.
“Nice to see you you like plunging necklines.” She chuckles. “The red one. You can wear the black one in the afterparty.”
“Afterparty? I don’t think it’s appropriate since Rebecca’s with me.” You implied. “Well, the organizers insist you’d come! It’s been a long time they said, and they would want you to have a comeback. Besides, they want to meet Rebecca too.” You pondered for a minute. You were just concerned on how Rebecca would react to the paparazzi in LA, the flashing lights on her. But then again, she was probably used to it with having Luke as her father in the first place. “Okay, I’ll go. In one condition.”
“What is it, miss?”
“Well firstly, Gina, I have known you for all these years and I don’t know what I’d do without you getting through my hectic schedule and career, so I was wondering if -”
“I’d go with you to both the events, take care of her and make things easier?” She said the words straight out of your mouth. You gripped her shoulders, nuzzling your head.
“Oh would you please! Thank you so much, and you don’t have to go as my assistant, just as a close family friend, which is a fact too.”
“No worries, miss! And as a friend, when I am seeing my ex after 10 years and had your looks,” Her hands this time gripped on your shoulders and brought you to the vanity mirror and chair, sitting you down. She opens one drawer and brings out a silver choker and assorted rings, then puts some hair on one side. “I would have this getup on. You will slay it! Whatcha think, Mark?”
“You’re gonna kill it, and him too!” He exclaimed.
As this occurred, Rebecca was behind the door, giggling at your frantic self. She liked that you really wanted to make a bold entrance to your crazy man of an ex-husband and to the media as well. Entering the room, you were lying on the bed, still vaping out smoke.
“Mom, stop that! It’s not healthy!” She came to your side, grabbing the e-cigarette, giving it to Mark. “Hey, I need it!”
“Hide this wherever, I don’t want her to die just yet.”
“No problem, bub.” Mark leaves the room, sneakily smoking a bit of it. Luckily, you didn’t see it because you would grow even madder. “That thing costs a lot, you know?” You told the blonde girl, now drinking out of your flask, tasting the familiar taste of vodka. “I know, aunt Eleanor has one just like it.” She answers, also saying a name you haven’t heard in so long.
“Aunt Eleanor? How is she?” You chimed in, focused the whereabouts and state of your once close friend in your twenties. It’s been ages since you’ve heard about her, the last being when you told her about the finalization of the divorce.
“Great, she and uncle Calum are great and also happy. You know her?”
“She was one of my closest friends, who is your godmother. Dad didn’t tell you, huh?” She shakes her head. “Well, I miss her very much. She was one of the people I cut off ties with because I was too hurt after I separated with your dad.”
“That’s awful! You should reconnect when they come here tomorrow or something when you talk to dad.” Rebecca reacted. You regret cutting off ties, but talking to her will remind her of Luke because it was the tour life that bonded you with her a lot and it will be so painful. You got to do what you have to do in order to be sane once more.
“Speaking of your dad, does he know about the switch-up?” You question, sitting up from your previous position in order to look at her properly. “Yes, Stella just messaged me a while ago that she told dad.” She makes up, trying to comfort you so you wouldn’t worry anymore. But you weren’t aware of such.
“Yikes, I’m going to have to mentally prepare for that.” You say, putting your palm on your face. But from your peripheral view, you watched how Rebecca pouted, full of sadness and fright. This isn’t normal for an 11 year old to handle, and this is a nightmare as well for you to deal with an ex-husband when things didn’t work out like it used to.
“Oh poppet, your dad and I will work this out, okay? I got this under control.” You reassured her, her saddened eyes brightened, feeling hopeful as she hugs you, falling on your back. You tried not to cry or tear up yet despite the temptation.
Truly, the guilt pangs your heart for leaving but glad that you are reunited. How dearly you missed this girl.

Chapter 1 // Fear of Flying
It was a beautiful morning in Seoul; Namjoon had woken up a while ago and was going over some lyrics he had written down the night before, while waiting for the other boys to get up and start their day. Today they had nothing on their schedule until the afternoon. Normally he would spend the morning in bed reading a book, but he had made other plans. Around 9 am he heard noises coming from the kitchen, so he got up to see who was awake. Hoseok and Yoongi were sitting at the kitchen table, drinking coffee and eating cereal, while Jin was looking for something in one of the cupboards. “Morning.” Hoseok said, looking up from his phone. He just mumbled a response, while grabbing a mug to pour himself some coffee. “You’re up early.” Yoongi stated, looking at his watch. “Yeah, Jungkook and I wanted to go to that music equipment store to check out some stuff he wants to get.” He took a sip from his mug, hoping that the brown liquid would supply him with more energy. “Why doesn’t he just order it online? It would be so much easier than going there.” “I just think it’d be good, if he could test out certain things in the store rather than just relying on reviews online.” Yoongi nodded. “Maybe you’re right, he’s new to all of this. Good idea.” He patted Namjoon’s shoulder. “How do you plan on waking him up?” “Well I told him to set an alarm.” Hoseok chimed in. “Good luck with that. He was up late playing Overwatch. I don’t think, he’ll get up any time soon.”
Namjoon groaned and rubbed his face. Their youngest member was somewhat irresponsible when it didn’t come to work related things. He could easily stay up all night to play games and then completely ignore plans. “Hey Jin hyung, do you want to wake up JK for me?” The oldest let out a laugh and shook his head. “No thanks.” “Oh Yoongi, can we borrow your car?” He carefully asked, knowing that it was a touchy subject since the incident with Taehyung. “Sure, just try not to scratch it like last time.” He nodded while getting up from his chair, grabbed his mug and left the kitchen to go wake up the maknae. No noise was coming from his room when he stood in front of the door. It was already past the time he was supposed to get up. When he entered, empty soda bottles, chip bags and dirty clothes surrounded him. Rolling his eyes, he set his mug down on the sticky table. “Hey Jungkook.” He said, looking up the bunk bed to check if there was any sign of the youngest being awake. Of course, he wasn’t. Namjoon gently started nudging him until he sleepily opened his eyes. “Hyung…” He mumbled, his voice still raspy with sleep. “What time is it?” “Well, almost 9:30. So get up now and go shower.” The younger one let out a displeased noise, buried his head in his pillow and pulled his duvet over his head. “Come on, rise and shine.” Namjoon pulled the duvet off of him and threw it on the chair. Jungkook slowly moved down to the ladder of his bed and climbed down. It was still a mystery to all of the boys, how he managed to do that while being half asleep. “You’re not even dressed yet.” He said reproachfully and rubbed his eyes; his hair was sticking out in every direction. “Unlike you, I showered last night after we came home from practice so I’m ahead of you already.” Cautiously he placed his hands on Jungkook’s shoulders and guided him out of the room. “Look who has risen from the dead!” Jin joked, coming from the bathroom. Jungkook let out a fake laugh, before closing the door to the bathroom behind him. “I’m pretty sure he hates you right now.” Namjoon just shrugged. “Maybe, but he’ll get over it.”
After an hour of waiting for Jungkook to get ready, they were finally close to their designated destination. Once Yoongi’s car was parked safely in the parking unit of the store, they went inside. “So what do you want to check out?” Namjoon asked, while looking around. “Microphones and I think I want to look at launch and drum pads.” “Okay, those are over there.” It was going to be a long day. Jungkook was testing everything; different mics so he could record songs in his room, drum pads and he was even looking at different mixers. He didn’t mind one bit though, it was fun to see his little brother so excited about all the things he had been interested in for years and he tried his best to help him. While one of the guys working in the store explained something to them about a mixer, Namjoon noticed that the younger one wasn’t paying attention anymore. He kept sneaking subtle glances over his shoulder to where the instruments were lined up. A group of three girls was gathered around the acoustic guitars, talking and laughing loudly. “Thank you, we’ll figure out if he actually needs one of those.” The guy nodded and headed over to one of his colleagues. “So, do you think you want one of those?” Jungkook looked at him, like he had just caught him doing something naughty. “Huh? Sorry. I-I wasn’t paying attention hyung.” “I can see that but yeah, do you think you need a mixer? I’m sure for the time being you can get by with one of mine or you can borrow one from Yoongi.” He didn’t get an answer right away. “Sure yeah, whatever you say is best.” He chuckled, looking over to the girls. “Which one is it?” “The one in the denim jacket and the black jeans.” Jungkook said, not taking his eyes off her. “She’s pretty, why don’t you go over and talk to her?” He said but his suggestion was shot down right away. “I can’t. You know, I can’t just go over and talk to her. She’s not Korean and they were speaking English. How am I supposed to talk to her?!” “I’m sure, she won’t bite you Kookie.” But he vehemently shook his head. “No, I won’t be able to say anything to her. She’s way too pretty.” He looked down but then lifted his head back up. “Stop with the puppy-dog-eyes JK. Seriously.” Namjoon should have known from the beginning where this was going. “Please hyung, can’t you go over and ask for her number? Please?” It was hard to say no to him when he looked like a puppy that was about to get shot. “I’m not going over there for you. You’re a man now, so go get the girl.” But he knew that he had lost the battle already. “Hyung, she’s alone over there by the guitar supplies, please do this for me. I promise to do your laundry for a month. Just please, do this for me.” He sighed. “Fine, but you really owe me big time. Laundry is not enough.” He straightened up his posture and started walking. He wasn’t trying to look cool to impress her, but now he was on a mission. While he was casually making his way over, he bumped into a chord display and almost knocked it over. He could hear Jungkook laugh and contemplated for a second to just walk back to him, but he promised to try. He was standing next to her, looking at the different guitar strings. He reached for the ones Jin used and then turned to her. “Hey, sorry to bother you. I’m Namjoon.” He held out his hand and she hesitantly shook it. “Hi, Mila.” She seemed a little shy, or maybe she wasn’t used to random guys talking to her. Now that he was closer to her, he had to admit that she really was pretty and definitely not the type of girl Jungkook would usually go for. “Uhm, I normally don’t do this, but do you see my friend over there?” He nodded in the direction where Jungkook was standing, trying to look busy and not like a nervous wreck. Her eyes followed the movement of his head. “Yeah, what about him?” She tilted her head in question and crossed her arms in front of her chest. “He’s a little shy and so I was wondering if you would give him your number? He thinks you’re really pretty.” It was so much easier to talk to women, when he wasn’t the one attracted to them. She took a little while to answer; thinking about what he had asked her. “I’m not sure, I usually don’t give my number to strangers.” He pursed his lips. “I understand. I promise, he’s a nice guy. Jungkook is just really shy and couldn’t bring himself to talk to you.” A smile formed on her lips. “He is kinda cute. Okay, fine.” She took her backpack off and pulled out a notebook. She scribbled down her name and number and handed it to him. “Thank you, you just made him really happy.” She laughed and put her bag back on. “Tell him to text me.” “Will do, have a good day.” He turned around and walked back to his brother, who was nervously flipping through one of the equipment catalogs. “What did she say?” He asked immediately, basically throwing the catalog back on the shelf. “Sorry Jungkook, she said you’re not cute enough.” The disappointment in his eyes was almost unbearable. He actually was sad. “Here. I was just joking.” Namjoon held out the small piece of paper. “You lied to me?” The younger one yelled and punched his shoulder with much more force than intended. “Ouch, be nice or I’ll go back and tell her that you’re a dick.” Jungkook snatched the paper from his hand and looked at it. “Thank you so much. Her handwriting is pretty too. Is she nice? Did she say anything about me?” He was a lot more talkative now than before. “She is nice and she said you’re cute.” “Did she? Oh, that’s good.” His face was slightly flushed now. “Okay, can we get back to why we are here?” For some reason, he already knew the answer to that question. “Hyung, I think I’ll order that stuff online. We can go home, it was a really successful day.” Namjoon wanted to be annoyed but the genuine smile on Jungkook’s face was enough to wash away all negative feelings.
It had been four days since Jungkook had gotten her number; yet he still had not sent her a text. It wasn’t so much about the fact that he wanted to make her wait to seem more interesting or appear much cooler than he was, but something was holding him back. He just didn’t know how to start a conversation with her. The boys had been practicing their new dance routine for several hours and it was finally time for a break. While the others had left to get drinks and food, Jungkook sat down on the floor, against the mirror and scrolled through his phone. A little later Namjoon and Hoseok came back, carrying water bottles and lunch boxes. “Here Kookie, you need to eat something.” Hobi handed him a lunch box and both boys sat down with him. He didn’t really feel like talking, so he just opened his box and started devouring the food. Going through the new routine in his head again, he didn’t really pay any attention to others talking. “Hey Jungkook, I asked you something.” Namjoon laughed, which made him look up. “Huh? Sorry hyung, what did you say?” He swallowed the bite he was chewing on and grinned at his older brother. “I just wanted to know if you texted her?” Jungkook could feel the heat rising to his cheeks and just shook his head. “You didn’t? It has been a few days now.” “I know, I’ll do it eventually.” “What are you two talking about?” Hoseok inquired, and Jungkook automatically knew that it probably wasn’t a good idea to tell him, it would just make things more complicated if he didn’t text her at all. “When we were at the music store Jungkook saw a girl he liked.” Namjoon said casually, which caused Hoseok make an ‘oooooohhhh’ sound. “And he made me get him her number and now he tells me that he has not texted her.” “Really? Oh my God our little Kookie is a man now! You have text her!” He said excitedly. “I bet she’s really pretty if she got his attention.” He reached out with his hand and ruffled his hair. “She is pretty.” He muttered before shoving more food in his mouth. “Okay, then why haven’t you texted her, when you so desperately wanted her number?” Jungkook knew he had to answer Namjoon; there would be no way around it. “I..hmm… we were quite busy, hyung.”
“I know but you text all the time with your friends, so that’s no excuse.” The youngest started chewing on the inside of his cheek, trying to come up with another lame excuse he could use but he came up short. “My English is not that good that I could have a real conversation with her and I don’t want to make mistakes.” His lunch looked so much more interesting now that he had told both of them the truth. He picked up random bits and pieces with his chopsticks just to put them down again and to pick up something else. “Jungkook, your English has improved so much, don’t be shy.” Hoseok said encouragingly. Why was he so enthusiastic about all this? “Yeah, Hobi is right and if that’s what you’re worried about then I’m happy to help you. And I’m sure if you were to make mistakes, she wouldn’t care anyway.” Namjoon winked at him and patted his shoulder. “You would? I didn’t want to bother you again. After all, you already went and got me her number.” “Of course I’ll help you, all you have to do is ask.” Jungkook smiled and picked up his phone from his lap. “Why am I so excited? I mean, I don’t know her but I kind of like the idea of you having a girlfriend.” Hobi was all smiles and clapped his hands. “Oh my god hyung don’t jinx it, please. Maybe she won’t like me because I made her wait.” The other two burst out laughing, while his cheeks hot even more red than before. “Give me your phone and tell me what you want to say.” Jungkook handed Namjoon his IPhone. “I don’t know, I guess that’s another reason why I haven’t texted her yet.” “Well, you should apologize first! You should have messaged her sooner, that’s just common etiquette.” Jungkook nodded, he knew that Hoseok was right. “Yeah write that! But don’t ask her on a date or anything, I don’t want to seem too eager.”

Album Review by Bradley Christensen Chris Bullard – It’s Me Record Label: Self-released / Independent Release Date: March 17 2017
Have you ever listened to an artist / band, or even just a single album, and you thought, “Why aren’t they huge?” Don’t lie to me now, because we all know that you’ve thought about this. It doesn’t have to be with your favorite bands, either. I mean, if you love Green Day, for example, they’re one of the biggest bands in the world. They’re already huge, but I’m talking about those unknown / obscure bands that either never got the success they deserved, or an artist that is fairly new, but deserves a lot of success, regardless of the genre that they’re in. There’s a bit of a dichotomy to this, though, because you can want a band, artist, or album to be huge, but depending on their sound, that might not happen. You bet that are tons of fans that want bands like Issues, Pierce The Veil, and Sleeping With Sirens to be huge, and in the case of certain bands in the “core music” scene, such as Of Mice & Men or Bring Me The Horizon (that have a more accessible rock sound nowadays), that’s happening more and more, but I can’t imagine metalcore / post-hardcore to be as huge as it was about ten years ago. That’s not how music is anymore, but it’s completely fine to wish that your favorite bands would be huge, no matter what. Everyone wants their favorite bands to be huge, because they want more people to hear about them, but sometimes it’s just not realistic. There’s always the possibility that they could get huge in whatever genre they’re in, not necessarily huge in terms of music as a whole. There are those few artists that came along, though, that you just think should be huge, because they’d fit in with the mainstream perfectly. That’s not meant as a bad thing, either, but these artists have the kind of sound that could take them far in their respective genre. An artist that I’ve come across recently who fits that bill perfectly is country singer-songwriter Chris Bullard, specifically with his debut LP, 2017’s It’s Me.
Last week I was searching through the country tags on Bandcamp, which is how I came across Bullard’s music, but I knew I found something special the moment that I listened to the opening track of the record, “Pay Dirt.” The song has lyrics I could really get behind, but the sound of the song was nice, too. Bullard’s sound, as I found out while listening to the whole album, is a good mix between pop-country and traditional country. It gives country fans the best of both worlds, at least that’s what I’d like to believe. If you’re into pop-country, meaning catchy hooks and a slick sound, you’ve got that here. Every track is catchy in some way, but some tracks have more of a rollicking sound than others. At the same time, however, this LP has a lot of organic instrumentation, so it’s not like you hear any drum machines or programmed synths. I have nothing against that sort of thing, especially in country music, but a lot of country fans take offense to artists going for a more pop-focused sound. If you want catchy hooks, but without that kind of sound, Chris Bullard is your man. Backing up for a second, though, this album is very good. I’ve been enjoying It’s Me every single time that I listen to it, and I find myself coming back to it constantly. I love albums like that, and I can’t say I hear those kinds of albums all the time. You know, the ones that you want to revisit the minute you’re done listening to them, because they’re that good. Here’s the kicker, though – It’s Me isn’t particularly a unique album. I’d be lying if I said Bullard’s sound was anything I haven’t heard before, but he does the same thing that pop-punk band Broadside did a couple of years ago. Their debut LP, 2015’s Old Bones, was a generic pop-punk album, by all definitions, but it was extremely well done. That was because the band was armed with a great vocalist, great lyrics, and a punchy, catchy, and accessible sound that showcased what pop-punk was all about. I’d argue that Bullard does the same for country music.
Like I said earlier, Bullard’s sound is the best of both worlds for people that might enjoy catchy hooks and melodies, but they don’t like the synth and drum machines that a lot of pop-country artists (and even some very popular and longstanding artists) have been employing over the last few years. His sound is very catchy, easygoing, and infectious, but it’s got a lot of organic instrumentation to it. I’m definitely not against a more pop-focused sound, which I mentioned, but country fans might be able to get into Bullard for having a very organic sound. Regardless, his sound is quite nice, and even going beyond having catchy hooks within his sound, it’s somewhat diverse, too. It’s nothing I haven’t heard before, sure, but some tracks have a country-rock feel to them, some tracks are more pop-country-influenced, and some are outright ballads, but no matter the sound of the song, it’s all done very well. The diversity is very nice, especially for the kind of album that it is, but the album is only around 39 minutes, too, making for a quick, short, and easy listen. The album doesn’t overstay its welcome, and it gives you just enough of what you wanted. Moving into the vocals and lyrics, Bullard is a pleasure to hear behind the microphone. He’s got a very clean, slick, and accessible delivery, which is good to those that might not enjoy a rougher / grittier vocalist, but he has the range, power, and emotional intensity to make it work. Bullard’s got one hell of a knack for catchy hooks, too, and just about every song on here is catchy in some way, shape, or form. That’s partly because the lyrics are written quite well, too. Having a writing credit on every track, Bullard’s writing style is very nice, easygoing, and simple. The ideas that he conveys in each track aren’t anything mindblowing, profound, or insane, but smaller, relatable, and subtle ideas. The songs aren’t full of an impressive vocabulary, whether it’s to sound impressive and intelligent, or just because Bullard has some intense ideas that he wants to express, but the lyrics are emotional and heartfelt enough to really care about.
One of my favorite tracks is the opener, “Pay Dirt,” and in the song, Bullard talks about winning the lottery more than one way. Even if he didn’t win the state lottery, he’s still lucky to come home to his loving, caring, and beautiful wife that loves him very much, and that’s a very sweet idea. Another good one is “Red Dirt Palace,” and that’s got a similar idea, but it’s more so about where you live, not who you love. The song is also more tongue-in-cheek, as it’s about how his rundown home is a “red dirt palace,” and he’s learned to love it. You have some songs that get a bit more saddening, too, such as “Dirt On Their Wings.” That’s more so an uplifting and reassuring song that reminds people that even “angels get dirt on their wings,” so if you make a mistake, it’s okay, because even angels get dirt on their wings. It’s a sweet little metaphor that conveys a simple little idea. The record is chock full of songs like this, and I love when artists can write about good, well-meaning, and thoughtful topics in a way that anyone can understand. Bullard, as well as his team of writers, are very good at that. The whole album is great, too, and Bullard is an artist that I hope gets big. At the very least, I hope he gets bigger than he is, because he deserves it. He’s just one of those artists that has the potential to be huge. Whether it’s his sound, vocals, and the lyrics, he’s an artist that I would love to hear in the mainstream. Country fans, both fans of pop-country and more traditional country, will definitely enjoy this, and even if you’re not a country fan, I’d listen to this record. The genre has gotten some flack over the last few years, thanks to the “bro-country” sound (it’s basically dead now, though, so why people have a negative connotation towards country is beyond me), but there’s nothing like that here. This LP is very sweet, kind, emotional, and lovely. It’s a very pleasant listen, both in terms of its sound and lyrics. You don’t want to miss out on Chris Bullard, or you’ll be saying “It’s me” when someone asks who hasn’t listened to this album yet.
