since it's pride month, do you have any lgbtq+ headcanons/interpretations for the puyo cast?

I got this one before pride month, so I was waiting till it's actually June to answer it.

Let me preempt this by saying that I don't really like making "headcanons" that would create contradiction in how I read the text as presented by the writers, because something that doesn't gel with the source material in a way that enhances my experience with it isn't a "headcanon" to me but an AU.

(I infamously once made a post on here where I was yelling about how people need to stop calling their AUs "headcanons" that went kinda viral... oops.)

(Don't look for it, that was YEARS ago)

So, while I love reading, for example, Arle x Rulue fanfics, lesbian Rulue would be an AU to me, not a headcanon, because Rulue being into Satan is just an undeniable reality of the source material.

(That said, bisexual or pan Rulue WOULD be a headcanon)

Likewise, due to how extremely proud Raffina is of being a "lady", trans girl Raffina would be a headcanon, but trans boy Raffina would be an AU... Anyway, I am rambling. This is just how I define those terms for myself.

So, let's move on to the queer readings I have for the Puyo characters (it's a lot).

Arle is asexual and aromantic. Schezo is asexual.

This one is obvious, I even drew art for that a couple days ago. It's not just a case of me projecting my own sexuality onto "my favorite characters" either; Schezo and Arle aren't even close to my favorites, I'm more partial to the Primp characters. However, in most of the games, with some sparse exceptions from the Compile era (where characterization was generally inconsistent and spotty), Arle and Schezo are written in a way that I can only describe as "arch-asexual".

Whenever Arle is written as she is currently understood (spunky, freedom loving, adventurous), she never shows interest in relationships of any kind. She outright calls Schezo and Rulue "sexy" multiple times in both, the Compile era and the Sega era, but that doesn't seem to make her feel anything, she uses the terms as blunt descriptors that don't have much meaning to her personally. As an asexual, I do find that very relatable. In general, Arle's only one true love seems to be the concept of adventure (especially dungeon crawling) itself. In the novel "Everyone's Dreams Come True", the projection the dream mist tries to entice her with when its sleep curse fails to grip onto her is a projection of the entrance to an underground dungeon. In the Web Original Manzai Shorts, when she tries to explain the concept of a "wedding" to Amitie, she is incredibly awkward about it, like she's never even considered it herself before. She really doesn't show any interest in "partnering" up with anyone (other than Carbuncle) for life.

Meanwhile, Schezo's entire running gag simply doesn't work if he's not asexual. His slip ups are funny because he does NOT mean it that way, but is really only interested in three things: Power, cute stuff and food (in that order). The two times in the Compile era where he's not written as "asexual" infamously are hated by fans because they ruin his entire characterization: Saturn Madou's portrayal of Schezo is a black sheep for the entire franchise, both in the Japanese and English fandoms, and the one line he has in Nazo Puyo Tsuu that contradicts his otherwise asexual portrayal (I won't even repeat what he says...) makes absolutely no damn sense, even in context. A Schezo who portrays actual genuine interest in sexual matters in canon materials is a badly written Schezo. We have empirical proof of that.

That said, unlike with Arle, I don't feel comfortable also calling Schezo aromantic, because... I feel like he just hasn't had the room to explore whether he wants someone in his life or not yet. He had the Dark Mage business forced upon him at a very young age. He's isolated himself from people in a way that made it hard for him to start connecting again once people actually did come back into his life. When he thinks someone (I think it was Draco, but I forget) is flirting with him in Waku Puyo Dungeon, he seems genuinely flustered, not because he's interested, but because he's never thought anyone ever would act like that towards him (and unlike with Arle, that moment doesn't disrupt his characterization at all), and when he thinks Ms. Accord is flirting with him in Puyo Puyo 15th he has a minor meltdown, because he's not even sure if he wants to turn her down, but also thinks he just shouldn't have a romantic partner as the dark mage... So yeah, I think Schezo still needs time to figure stuff out for himself.

Satan is bigender or genderfluid

While he's portraying a super-masculine image whenever he's on screen, he's also shown zero qualms about slipping into more feminine roles, and openly and happily admits that he wanted to LARP as a princess in distress for Arle to save in Chronicle. His "Satan Saturn" alt in Quest is also really girlish, with the bow and the ponytail and the cherry blossoms, and he seems to be enjoying himself... As an ancient, possibly primordial demon lord, I think it would be weirder if he didn't have a rather lax approach to gender, tbh.

Oh, fun fact, in Madou Monogatari 2, the first time Satan ever appeared, his description of the person he wants to marry does not mention gender at any point. His only condition is that they're powerful, beautiful, wise and intelligent enough to make it to the bottom level of his dungeon in the Layla ruins...

Klug is a baby gay.

His babysitter-crush on Lemres is so palpable, it's downright painful. :'D Even Feli sees him as a romantic rival! The way swoons about Lemres during Tet 2 was quite telling as well.

There are a couple of moments in 15th where Klug portrays interest in women (specifically, older women...) but those just stink of comphet to me and are genuinely just extremely awkward moments that I am glad have never been addressed again since. 15th was only the second time Klug was more than a minor side character and I feel his characterization wasn't quite settled yet back then, so even aside from this, there is a lot of stuff in there that generally "feels wrong" in comparison to how the character has been consistently written in all materials since then. Even in his White Day alt in Quest, he only talks about how being popular by giving girls chocolate gifts will give him a sense of authority AND bring him closer to Lemres, so yeah. In retrospect, I absolutely read those awkward moments in 15th as comphet. He's a baby gay with a babysitter crush on Lemres and will hopefully find himself a nice guy his own age as he grows up.

Amitie will grow up to be poly and pan

In the drama CDs and novels its shown that Amitie absolutely doesn't understand why anyone would want to have only one romantic partner, and when she first hears about the concept of a "wedding" (which she apparently has never been confronted with directly before then??) she immediately wants to have one with her entire class.

Rulue attributes this to Amitie being "still a child", but I don't see it that way, given this behavior persists for two novels in succession. Even when Amitie shows signs of a specific crush on Sig, it always comes with the caveat on "I want to get others in on it too!"

So yeah. No way this girl won't have amassed a "harem" of boy- girl- and other-friends by the time she's off age and certified as a sorceress...

Raffina and Lidelle give off trans girl vibes, and Raffina is probably a lesbian

Raffina's determination to prove herself as a "lady" and Lidelle's fear of having certain of her physical features be "seen" seem to connect really strongly to a lot of my trans friends as analogue to their own experiences and I can totally see it. Portrayals like that would just blend in perfectly with their characterization.

As for lesbian Raffina, it's just a vibe I get from her. The few times she mentions handsome men, it seems more like she wants them as a status symbol, but has no actual interest in being with them. Even when she thinks the prince Otomo is looking for is "handsome", she has 0 interest in helping the man search for the prince until Otomo offers her a reward. Then, "Everyone's Dreams Come True" showcasts it even more clearly when the dream she is trapped in includes her "keeping" an army of young bodybuilders as "servants", and enjoying the fact that they want to be with her soooo badly, while she has no intention of ever giving them the time of day, holding the fact that they are "not worthy of her" over their heads. Meanwhile, when she's with other girls (like Rulue or Lidelle post Fever 2) she seems far more appreciative.

Either Maguro or Risukuma is a trans boy. Either one of them.

I don't think about this one too often, but it would make sense. Maguro was bullied as a kid for "looking like a girl", and a friend of mine has this amazing headcanon that the experiment that turned Risukuma into a squirrelbear was actually homebrew instant HRT. Amazing, 10/10.

I'll admit, this is partially just me having fun with the fact that Maguro and Ris were originally written as girls before plans for Puyo Puyo 7 changed, but, hey! It doesn't contradict with anything, so why not?

Ecolo is Ecolo

zoro/nami - compels me and it makes sense

im a huge nazo(?) person. you can tell by my fanfiction it's absurdly obvious the two of them were my first true ship.

the sexual tension in the arlong park scene where he calls her bluff is insane. every time zoro and sanji fight over nami the world gets a little brighter. every time zoro says something vaguely sexist because he hates admitting he loves nami is like my favourite thing in the entire world. he's bullshit and they should and have in my opinion made out several times. i love them so dearly i could not be a bigger zoro/nami person if i tried.

usopp/kaya - doesn't compel me and i don't think it makes sense. fuck them.

i am a hater. there is objectively nothing wrong with usopp/kaya but i hate this ship because of the people it attracts and the lazy writing it enables. opla is so much lazier when it wrote them as a romance than when oda wrote them as friends.

this is my one ship i get to be a solely negative person for i've decided. people act like kaya is all there is to usopp and i am so confident in saying that white woman is a footnote in his legacy as a character and im tired of people acting like she isnt.

law/robin - do not make sense but they do compel me contextually

lawbin is a ship I'm pretty neutral on, sometimes i think in polyshipping i think it's cute but just on their own i tend to feel negatively about them because they're too similar (which is why i think the ship doesn't make sense) and need someone to balance them out.

i just mentioned law/bepo/robin threesome and i stand by that. ive gone on record privately as thinking law/robin/brook would be an amazing ship because i think the skeleton would balance them out wonderfully.

calling all ex-aid women, KILL

this is just sketching out some thoughts for an ex-aid roleswap au, where Poppy, Saki and Nico switch places with their kamen rider counterparts. i mostly made this up because i needed saki to transform into a dragon.

Kamen Rider Poppy: Karino Asuna, 25 year old CNS in Seito University Hospital’s first Nurse Practitioner certification program. A cheerful and capable nurse with a kind bedside manner by day, Asuna becomes Poppy Pipopapo by night, a household name in the Japanese rhythm gaming scene for her idol-esque fashion and unbeatable scores. 

Asuna found solace in becoming Poppy after the loss of a long term patient who she was in care of daily care for. Asuna was in charge of her end of life care and thought that something wasn’t right but wasn’t able to help her, and was discouraged from finding out more about her death. It wasn’t until she was in charge of another patient who was presenting with the same symptoms, and when two men basically trip over her while she was searching for her runaway patient that she learned the truth of the Bugster virus. 

Kamen Rider Hunter: Momose Saki, 26 year old attending surgeon at Seito University Hospital and current Cyber Rescue consultant. Saki is a good surgeon and a mainstay of the hospital, but others find it hard to work with her as she comes off as distant and stand-offish, speaking very little to her interns and residents. 

Saki learned the truth of the Bugster virus after her ex-boyfriend Kagami Hiiro succumbed to it. He’d never told her he had been sick as she’d broken up with him shortly before he contracted it, and he thought he would be able to work through it. The last thing he ever said to her was to apologize that he’d never be the kind of doctor she’d wanted him to be. Saki takes her role as a Kamen Rider very seriously, and has been keeping up with any minor outbreaks of the virus since Zero Day very competently. She initially treats Asuna as a subordinate, as she feels like she should be the one bearing the burden of treating the threat as the sole full doctor of CR. 

Kamen Rider Taunt: Saiba Nico, 18 year old medical intern and one of the few survivors of Zero Day. Nico is the beloved rookie of the hospital, once being a long term patient returning to do her internship with the doctor who took care of her. She has a long way to go with bedside manner. 

At 13, Nico was at the top of competitive gaming in Japan, with sponsorship offers that made it very tempting to stop her schooling before entering high school despite her good grades. Then she contracted the Bugster virus, hospitalizing her and nearly killing her before Dr. Hanaya Taiga saved her life. His body was unable to keep up with the strain of being a Kamen Rider, and he became disabled. He deals with chronic pain that prevents him from working outside an administrative and teaching capacity, but he helped Nico through accelerated high school programs and college, letting her become the youngest intern at Seito University Hospital and the youngest CR consultant.

More notes:

Kuroto switches with his dad so he is in jail. His ultimate goal is still godhood but he’s much better at masking his god complex because he needed to survive in prison. He’s anti-capitalist because he hates his dad.

Kuroto wants godhood so he can bring back his mom from the Proto Gashats and create a world where he controls who lives and dies because they're all data. "I will not let anyone interfere with my eternal stage" etc (you all should watch revue starlight) He and Poppy face off about it and she has to kick him into accepting the nature of life and death. 

Emu and Parado are the navigators! The game in CR is Mighty Brothers X. Parado is still Parado but Emu’s name is M, short for Meta. They were born of Patient Zero of the Bugster Virus, the son of the original creator of the virus. Their human names are Hojo Emu and Hojo Nazo because they’re married. Parado only responds to Hojo-san also because he is married.

Kiriya is an AI created by GENM corp to help CR but his data got corrupted by Kuroto right before he got arrested and he loves to act silly and lie. He also is like Bugster adjacent. They put him in Poppy’s bike. He brings Poppy to meet Kuroto by diverting her GPS on her day off and Dan Masamune bricks him in response, until he comes back <3 upgraded <3

Part-character redesigns, part-vent art. Thoughts below the cut.

I’ve been a Sonic fan almost my entire life. I grew up with and during the Adventure era: my first Sonic game ever was Sonic Adventure DX for the GameCube, the first game I bought when it was new was Sonic Heroes, and to this day Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is my all-time favorite. I’ve seen so many voice actors come and go that I’ve gotten used to it. I was around to witness things like Shadow the Hedgehog, the Rush games, the Storybook series, the Riders games, and Sonic 06 in their heyday. I would watch Nazo Unleashed and the Sonic Shorts any chance I got. I also became familiar with the Archie comics, despite never reading them due to not living near a comic shop.

And because I was a young and impressionable teen in the online Sonic fandom pre-2010, I was all too familiar with the commonplace bashing that female characters faced. (Male characters were bashed too, but not in quite the same way. Gender’s really dumb.)

It wasn’t uncommon to see people refer to Amy as a psychotic stalker, or Rouge as a whore, or Marine as unendingly obnoxious. Female fan characters were touted as Mary-Sues, heinous things that a “real artist” should avoid like the plague, because god forbid you be a teenage girl who thinks Shadow and having powers are cool. But just as notable, in my opinion, was how the fandom treated Elise and non-game characters like Sally.

Sally’s reputation was mixed. Some praised her for being more mature and action-oriented than Amy, often in a way that read as “she’s not like those OTHER girls”. Many people subjected (and still subject) the under-18 Sally to loads and loads of p*rn. Others vehemently hated Sally, calling her a slut for “getting in the way of SonAmy” and a bitch because she once slapped Sonic.

Elise was far less divisive. People just flat-out HATED her, and many still do. She was considered such a damsel in distress that people compared her to Amy and Sally, saying, “Well at least Amy and Sally DO things!!!” To this day, the kiss scene in Sonic 06 is seen not just as a punchline, but as THE defining symbol of Sonic’s “dark age”. This isn’t to say that Elise never had fans at that time, but they were harder to find over the prominent clouds of hate.

And this hate, while overblown, didn’t entirely come out of a vacuum. Elise and Sally are just a few characters who were subjected to some less-than-ideal writing decisions, part of which could arguably be attributed to a lack of diversity in the writers’ room. In Elise’s case, not only is romance difficult to write within the confines of a self-contained game that emphasizes action, but I think the push for a less cartoony, more realistic style also hurt her, b/c her regular cutscene model’s face emotes about as much as a mannequin. She looks like she belongs in Final Fantasy, not Sonic. If she had been depicted the way humans are in Sonic Unleashed, more cartoonish and facially expressive, people might’ve gone easier on her. As for Sally, part of what endeared some people and bothered others was how little she conformed to game canon (this was before the Archie comics were rebooted). She was a princess like Tikal and Blaze, but she didn’t wear clothes like they did, and she was an action girl in ways that Blaze and Rouge were not. There was also her romance with Sonic which...all I’m gonna say on the topic is that their history is too complicated for me to see Sally as anything other than a lesbian, no disrespect to anyone who headcanons her as bisexual.

I remember being 14 and posting a Sonelise slideshow music video on YouTube, as teens did back then, and being hounded in the comments for “supporting b//eastiality”. My critical thinking skills weren’t quite where they are today, so in order to appease these people and feel accepted by the Sonic community, I deleted the video and started denouncing human x anthro ships as some horrible crime. I also believed that Sally and Elise (and to a lesser degree, Rouge) were characters who needed “fixing” in order for me to enjoy them. I drew countless doodles of Sally in tomboyish clothes and Elise with some sort of weapon or power, and admittedly I thought they looked cool but these drawings were still tinged with other people’s opinions and not entirely my own. Part of why Sonelise appealed to me as a kid was b/c I didn’t see it as a sexual relationship. I just saw it as two sentient humanoid teens who, bad writing be damned, really liked each other despite their different species. (I also realized years later that I was asexual, so go figure.) If anything, I was more bothered that Elise kissed a dead body.

In many ways, the Sonic fandom hasn’t changed. Fans still make OCs, people still cringe at Sonic 06, and shippers still get into heated arguments over who they think Sonic should be with. But at the same time, things have visibly improved. Sally hate has not only died down significantly, but people draw and write her being friendly with Amy and other girl characters (not to mention Sallicole became a thing). Elise is still kinda laughed at, but even she has new fans who draw and write about her without any malice behind it.

Although I have a greater appreciation for Sally and Elise as characters now than I did when I was younger, I still wanted to draw my own take on them for fun. I still kinda want Elise to have some sort of weapon or power, but only because I think she deserves it. Who doesn’t love princesses fighting in frilly gowns with swords made of fire!!! Sally fights using explosive acorn-shaped projectiles similar to Rouge’s bat bombs, as well as syncing up with Nicole’s handheld to borrow her abilities (like cross fusion in Rockman EXE). Still working out the details for both of them obviously but it’s a start lol

New refence sheet for an old OC : Crystale, the Lock of Order !

After many years of neglecting her I’ve finally made a reference sheet for my OC Crystale ! Despite her great powers and growing importance in the story I had never completed any actual art of her...

Crystale is part of Léa’s story I really need a new name for it, so she exists in a large multiverse involving Sonic characters among other things.

Story bit :

Information about Crystale quickly gets into heavy spoilers territory, yet there are still some things to know.

Despite her current appearance, Crystale was born on Earth as a human named Claire. Claire already had some of the features of Crystale ; although she was platinum blonde her skin was already pale and her turquoise eyes had no pupils. Claire was renamed "Crystale" upon being transferred out of Earth by Gods, into a place outside of dimensions where she would manage them.  

Crystale has the ability to manage dimensions, her role is to make sure the greater order is not disturbed. Rather than stopping all violence she simply keeps dimensions stable and act as the hand of the Gods in various dimensional issues.

As Crystale is still an Earthling, she has a Wish Gem, although hers has an unusual shape. This one has the alternative name of Order Emerald and its type is Abstinence or "True Patience". Whoever uses this gem to transform will turn into an Unlocked form.

Dark energies can be stored inside Crystale, and she has been used as a container for such already. She currently houses a clump of dark matter taken from a certain being, as well as the being of negative energy Nazo, and she can hear and communicate with both. If Crystale cries or gets angry she will die and release the two, hence Claire’s embracement of this Crystale persona, the diligent Lock of order, a being supposedly without a will of her and and with little emotions. Even afraid of great joys Crystale aims at a selfless, obedient and calm mindset, embracing her role of tool, a lock rather than a guardian.

Yet Nazo caught Claire slipping in, and he is now determined to make her fully resurface. At the beginning he wished to upset her to her death, but he eventually got a sense that Claire was just as trapped as he was, so he wishes to at least let her be herself again, or even to someday escape with her. In his own words he hates this Crystale persona (who he calls "Empty Happy") while loving Claire (not necessarily in a romantic sense).

The place where Crystale resides needs a new name, but I have by the past called it the "Secret Zone" or the "Secret Chaos". It is a timeless place made mostly of white spreading to the horizon, with a few hallmarks like crystal trees or a temple.

Some extra information about my (thought) process with this piece :

The gems are glossy, yet I didn’t want to add too much shading as this was simply a reference sheet and I suck at drawing gems. I did however detail the silver so it wouldn’t look like gray lines. It isn’t the best-looking silver, but I hope it convey this idea well.

The veils on Crystale all have glitter on them, and if you pay attention some are star-shaped. If you cannot add this detail it’s alright though.

The percentages on the colors of the palette are for the opacity. There is none on colors used for gradients though.

As I make my reference sheets on Microsoft Publisher the files may be a little big.

 A Crystale redesign has been in the works for quite a while already, yet the poor lad did not get any completed piece beforehand... She might as well be new to anyone but me. I hope you like her !

Also her gender is... Ambiguous. She’s often referred to as a girl but there’s more to it than what meets the eyes.

Chapter 11: Behind the scenes (Part 5)

Author notes: a part longer than the others, with a lot of... Eh... Dialogue. Hope you’ll like it! ;)

Kunikida and I sighed, exhausted by the situation. The illusionist had jumped in front of a moving train and had, obviously, not survived. He had revealed us rather important information about the Taikin family but, soon after, had given up on life for a reason we could not comprehend. Unless he had been threatened… Then, by who?

"This is getting annoying and nerve-wracking." My coworker let himself fall into a sofa, back in the mansion.

"We can't give up now, we have to find Yumiko-san's route with these videos…" I murmured, focused "Dazai, how was it with the servants?"

"Well~" He hummed, sitting next to me "I haven't found anything for the moment, but there are so many people, it's quite a hard job~ Couldn't you scan the entire place thanks to your ability, Ogawa~?"

"... You know that, were I to do that, I would collapse, don't you…? And I can't afford it, not when that case needs to be closed for the sake of innocent kids…!"

"You can rely on me — on us — for the rest if you need to, Ogawa." He assured "Just find the mentalist here, and get some sleep…"

"You always slack off…"

"Even she noticed it." Kunikida commented "She's right, we need her awake for the moment."

"But Yumiko-san's whereabouts are unknown because of that." Dazai defended "Not to mention Sakunosuke-kun could have been sold overseas for all we know…"

"He is still in Japan, you know that too…" I looked up at my friend, tiredly "Don't pretend you truly care about the case… You don't give a damn about that family…"

"Do you?"

"Not a chance." I smirked "I just want to protect two children and put in jail whoever needs to go there."

"... You don't actually mean it, do you…?" Our blond colleague frowned.

"I'm not a liar. I'll find the mentalist and interrogate them. You and Dazai work on the videos for now, we'll improvise afterwards." I said and stood up from my chair.

"But, Ogawa —"

"Let her go." Dazai prevented him from stopping me "Do what you do best, Ogawa."

"Indeed. Interrogating." I chuckled "Leave it to me."

I headed upstairs, towards the servants' quarters. At such a tardy hour, they had all gone to sleep, but, even so, lingering thoughts remained in their brains. From them originated dreams, another form of people's inner desires, albeit more… Fanciful. If anyone had thought about mentalism, it would show immediately. Quietly, I sat down in the middle of the corridor and closed my eyes to concentrate on the whispers coming to my mind uninvited. Chimeric images invaded my own thoughts, visions of whimsical worlds mixing up together. Something about mentalism… Anything related to hypnotism…

I found my culprit the moment a dream about illusions made its way to my brain. Immediately, I spotted the room where its owner was sleeping. As quietly as usual, I sneaked inside and identified the servant. It was a young maid, perhaps in her twenties. She slept so soundly that she would never notice if I were to smother her with a pillow. She would simply be put to sleep… Forever… No, I could not afford to do that. The information she could provide me was far more important than my anger against her. Even so, I did not use any delicacy as I woke her up and covered her mouth to stop her from screaming. With a clear gesture, I demanded her to follow me out of the room. She immediately complied, feared for her life. And I brought her back to the dining room.

"You were fast." Dazai noted, arms crossed and back against the chair.

"But I'm completely done for…" I groaned, shoving the maid toward him "After that, I'm going to sleep."

"Well, I'll let you interrogate her, then." He shrugged.

Kunikida only stared at me with a strange look. In his eyes, I could see a mix of disapproval and apprehension. Or was it fear…? And was it a tint of curiosity there…? I grinned slightly. It had been a while since I had last sat in front of someone to question them. I brought her to an empty room nearby.

"What do you want from me…?" She asked, completely panicked.

"Quiet." I ordered "I'm the one who asks questions here. And, oh, don't even think about using hypnotism on me, it doesn't work."

"I-I don't know… What you're talking about…"

I exhaled and closed the door, before tying her to the chair with a rope I had taken with me earlier.

"No use lying to me either. I'm basically a lie detector." I warned her "So I advise you speak up quickly. Where is Yumiko-san?"

"I don't know…"

"Alright, suppose you don't know. What's your name?"

"M-My… Name…? It's Isobe… Isobe Hanako..." She stuttered.

"Cute." I commented "Give me a minute, will you? I'll be right back."

With a smile, I left her in the room to walk back to the detectives. There, I grabbed Kunikida's computer.

"Hey, what —"

"I only need a minute." I typed quickly "All done, thanks."

"Ogawa… No need to go too far." Dazai told me.

"You know I hate cleaning blood…" I answered simply.

When I went back to Isobe Hanako, she still had a terrified look in her eyes. Calmly, I sat in front of her and scrutinised her face.

"Mmh… You don't look like a bad girl. I still can't believe you did that…"

"Did what…?"

"Harassed that poor girl until she committed suicide. You weren't alone, your friends in high school pretty much participated too, but you were the perpetrator, weren't you? The leader. The one behind the attacks." I crossed my legs to be more comfortable "What did she do to you, I wonder… Stealing your boyfriend? Getting better grades than you? Being more… Appreciated than you? Being more beautiful than you? So, what did she do to you?"

"How do you… How do you know that…?" She started crying.

"I'm well-informed. Now, if you don't want the world to know about the girl who mysteriously disappeared after making a classmate die, if you want to keep living quietly, without any troubles, it's easy. You can just answer my questions."

"No… I can't…"

I got closer to her so I could grip her shoulders tightly.

"My… You don't seem to understand… Very well, then. I will sell the news of your position to the media. And…" I lowered my voice "I will find dirt about your entire family. None of you will be able to survive the disaster coming to you and that is your fault. But don't worry… None of you will die… I'll only make sure that your life becomes a literal hell."

"No! Not my family…" She sobbed "Leave mom and dad alone… I'll talk okay? I'll tell you what you want to know, so leave them alone…!"

"That's a good girl." I smiled at her "Now… Where is Yumiko-san and why did you put her under hypnosis?"

"I… I don't know… Where she is… She… Went to find her son..."

"Oh…"

Swiftly, I grabbed one of her fingers and broke it. She screamed in pain.

"Needless to say, I hate lies." I shrugged it off "So?"

"You're a monster…" She hiccuped as tears ran onto her face.

"It's up to you whether you talk to me or lie to me. I'm not a monster, you're just quite stubborn. Hurry now, I don't have all night. I'd like some sleep too, you know."

"I… She… I received an order… I had to make her kill the mentalist Nazo Eita… I just told her… 'Kill Nazo Eita'... She went out and… She must be in Kabukichō…"

"Thanks." I took notes "Who gave you that order?"

"I don't know…"

I broke a second finger.

"Who gave you that order?" I repeated, without losing composure.

"His brother…!" She finally revealed "He's my teacher…! Please! Stop hurting me!"

"His brother… Oh… I see… It was the third one, Nozaki the Grand. Now you say so, he did change a bit his last name to create a whole new one…" I snickered "Smart… And he had his brother killed… Why would he use Yumiko-san for that, though…?"

"I can't say…"

"It seems you don't care about your fingers…" I sighed and reached for her hand "Are you sure about your answer?"

"S-She's the perfect… Culprit…" Her voice shook "Even if sh-she's arrested, Taikin-san won't be bothered… She's just a pawn…"

"Ah… I think I understand now… Thank you for your answer." I let go of her finger.

"Is… Is it over now…?"

"You're going to resign from this job." I stated "And you'll live far, far from that mansion."

"I… I can't…! That's my job…!"

"It's fine with me, then. Then, I'll have you arrested."

"W-Wait —"

I pulled out a gun and knocked her out with the pommel. She did not deserve that I wasted a single bullet for her. A dog who bit its master… It was useless. And it angered me.

"Make her sign a complete confession when she wakes up." I asked my coworkers "She's the one who ordered Yumiko-san to kill Nazo-san. He was pushed under the train. That maid obeyed the third mentalist of the list, Nozaki the Grand, who is none other than Nazo-san's brother. They worked together for the Taikin family."

"Ten minutes…" Dazai checked the time "You're getting rusty~"

"I only had a minute to look for information, after all. Had I had a complete file about her, it would have been much easier." I put my head on the table.

"She's… Asleep…?" Kunikida raised an eyebrow.

"Knocked out. Nothing too bad. We may need to call Yosano-sensei for her fingers, too." I mumbled.

"Violence? Truly, Ogawa, your skills are decreasing~" My friend laughed.

"Not at all…" I cracked a smile "It's just hard without information."

"Wait a minute… How can you two joke about that…?!" Our bespectacled colleague sounded upset "You basically tortured the poor girl, that's not interrogating…!"

Upon seeing my face, he quickly headed inside the other room, from where we heard a shocked gasp. His steps were quick to bring him back.

"You destroyed her hand…! And her face…!"

"Kunikida… I broke two fingers and punched her jaw… Don't exaggerate…" I rolled my eyes.

"If she even has a trace of psychological issues after that, I swear, you will not join the Agency, unless you step on my dead body…!" He menaced.

I immediately sat up, then clicked my tongue. The Agency… For a moment, most certainly due to exhaustion, I had forgotten about the rules of this world. Could I not interrogate someone normally…? Negotiating with them, instead of threatening them…?

"She won't have side effects… I don't think she will… I mean… I went pretty easy on her…"

I had the terrible feeling that I was worsening the situation instead of helping it.

"Easy…? For goodness' sake, Ogawa…! She's disfigured…! And her cheeks are still stained by tears, what did you tell her…?!" He argued.

"Fine! Fine…"

I fidgeted with my fingers.

"I… Did forget myself and use methods from underground organisations…" I admitted.

"Goddammit, you —"

"Calm down now." Dazai stopped the detective from grabbing my collar "It's done, now. It is true that the method was… Doubtful, but, at the very least, we have a confession. Besides, for knowing her, Ogawa did go easy on her, don't worry."

I could see Dazai did not like that I had given up so easily. However, there was no way I could work righteously and save that family… They would have to try without me. And I… I would go back to my home.
