Jegulus Microfic: Mirror

Sirius and James snickered at their latest find while running around the castle: The Mirror of Erised.

“Which one of us do you think he’ll see in the mirror?” Sirius asked as they stared at it.

Sirius had seen Remus on one occasion, and had seen himself with his brother on another. Regulus didn’t have to know that it didn’t always show the same thing. 

James grinned at him. 

“It’s gonna be me, mate, but there’s only one way to find out.”

Sirius held out his hand for a shake. “You’re on.”

Twenty-four hours later, the Marauders were back in the room with the secret mirror, this time with Regulus in tow.

“Tell us what you see,” James encouraged. 

“What does it show?” Regulus asked, eyes narrowing. He was still across the room and hadn’t looked directly into it.

Sirius pushed him forwards. “We’ll tell you after, wouldn’t want to spoil it.”

As he stepped away towards the mirror, Sirius grinned and whispered to James, “I have this in the bag.”

James laughed in his face. “No way, Pads.”

When Regulus reached the mirror, he just stared at it for a long moment. When he finally looked away, he looked straight at James, eyes misty.

“What did you see?” James asked, ready to be triumphant. 

“I- your parents- what is this thing?”

James and Sirius both frowned. 

“My parents?” James asked.

Regulus nodded, and it looked like tears were threatening to spill over. 

“They said they were going to adopt me and take me in.”

Sirius and James both bolted over to Regulus to surround him with hugs, competition forgotten. 

“If you ask, they would,” James whispered into Regulus’ hair, “I didn’t know you wanted that.”

Regulus sniffled. “More than anything. Does this mirror show the future?”

Sirius shook his head, his own eyes damp. 

“No, it only shows what you want. But we’ll make this your future, Reg.”

“Okay,” Regulus said, letting his head fall forward onto James’ shoulder. “Yeah, it’s what I want.”
