Week 6~ Nature Lab

I started my week off with a visit to Birmingham's botanical gardens. I had been wanting to visit the gardens since moving to Birmingham and finally had the opportunity to go. There were lots of different varieties of plants that need different types of environments to survive. The conservation work being done by the gardens was very impressive and was a great way of gathering inspiration and motivation for our own project. Here are some of my favourite images that I took over the day:

Starting our day off with "my octopus teacher" caused me to think a lot about our relationship with nature. I feel as though we have a detachment from other animals that made this film seem odd to me. I found Craig's relationship with the octopus to be a bit extreme and almost too intense. I could imagine his commitment to this octopus would take away from his other relationships and it was no surprise to me that he did not have a wife at the time. I think he could have been substituting this relationship for the one he had with the octopus. The morality and ethical implications of this experiment were something the entire group questioned after watching and we all had a similar mindset when it came to this relationship.

We then continued on with our nature lab developments and I came into the session with the final concept drawing of what our outcome will look like:

As a group, we then started to experiment with textures and different effects we could use to show the mushroom/tree image. Here is my outcome from the day:

we used regular card for our experiments as it was more available to us and we could then save the thinner paper for the real thing. I tried lots of different methods of creating texture including layering up scraps of the thinner paper and then overlaying string both wound and unwound to make the affect of tree roots. I liked the string over the top most from this part of the experiment and I think if it were to be painted over in a brown colour it would be even more effective. other sections involved pipe cleaners (another resource found in the studio) I used a small amount in order to not waste more than necessary and created what reminded me slightly of pollen spores. this was achieved by cutting the pipe cleaner into smaller sections then inserting them randomly into some hot glue. the other way I used the pipe cleaners was to cut all of the "fur" off of the stem and then use PVA glue to stick it onto the card. I found this texture to be the most interesting as I didn't expect that the be the outcome.

I used string and compressed it by holding one strand and pushing the rest down on itself to create contortions and knots. I also thought this was really effective mimicking how trees knot and form.

Lastly, I used hot glue by itself to create the overlapping blobs that remind me a lot of natural forms and moss found at the botanical gardens. (see below)

Last thing on Tuesday we had a creative technology workshop on Touch designer and the possibilities with body tracking. I was less interested in this workshop as I didn't feel that it linked enough with our plans for our outcome so we wouldn't use it this semester. Nonetheless it was still interesting to see how it worked and also reminded me of the Playstation 2's Eyetoy which I had many hours of fun using growing up. This link for me also reminded me of one of the Eyetoy's mini games where you could use the camera's motion sensor to play a theremin.

Between the Tuesday and Friday session, our group had an issue arise. This meant me and Zoe had to come in early on the Friday to discuss it with Lara and Sarah. As it was unable to be resolved on the spot, it meant our projects were very up in the air with how we were to continue and get them finished. Especially since we were a day before Grad+ week, it meant we had to wait to have a meeting with the head of the school of art after the break. The only thing we could do is continue to attempt to proceed and finish everything to the best standard that we could considering we were unsure of how our group will be structured further on. At this point I was very exhausted from the situation. I haven't had any conflict such as this in many years however I thought I dealt with it well and i have displayed high levels of resilience.

This week's text was very relevant to our project as it had a focus on the wood wide web, fungus and mycelium. The emphasis on the forest's ecosystem and cohabitation was a key theme throughout. The level of intelligence these different species have is very impressive to see how they interact in different environments/ with different variables. Learning that mycelium can be bioluminescent was also very interesting and could be something to consider with our project.

As far as the wood wide web, it was shocking for me to discover that the internet's network (unintentionally?) mimics nature and ecological systems.

Details on fungal connections coincidentally link really well with our concept. the extract mentions sugars leaking from the plant's roots, passing into open soil, and being taken up by the other plant's roots. This is exactly what we plan to have our outcome do as there will be holes in the tubing that allow the water to spread into the outcome and be absorbed by the paper leaves. In a sense, the water will be acting as the carbon dioxide in real fungal connections.

We also had a 10 minute presentation to show to Lara, Sarah and the group to display how far along we were in our nature lab. As we were still in our research phase and had a few different ideas of how to put everything together, this uncertainty definitely came across in our presentation as we found it slightly more difficult to articulate our concept. We were advised to make sure we could describe our concept within a singular sentence. I think this would be beneficial to us as a group as well as the audience to give the outcome a clear concept and narrative. I think the main thing that is causing confusion is having both mycelium and decay as a focus. in terms of ideology, these two things are very different, however in terms of our piece, the decay aspect is needed in order to reveal the mycelium network below.

Jon Biddulph arrived in the afternoon to deliver a presentation to us. He was Sarah's lecturer from Manchester and had an interest in microbes and bacteria. Jon disregards a lot of his work being art which is rather different to what we have been taught this far in the course. With the world being so interdisciplinary, everything can be considered art, especially since art is now being recognised as a part of STEM. His attitude was very much to take yourself out of your comfort zone and try something different, especially if things aren't going your way.

I found his point on ethical and cultural implications of eating your own skin and your bodily rights very interesting. I thought of how this could link with how it was illegal to kill yourself up until the 1960s.

Earth-Friendly Witchcraft

Whatever religious or spiritual tradition they identify with, most witches agree that there is something sacred about the natural world. We draw our power from the earth beneath our feet, the sky over our heads, and the air in our lungs.

And yet, many of us live in societies that are actively contributing to the destruction of the natural world. Most developed nations have a linear economy, which means resources are extracted and then sent on a one-way trip to consumers who will use them and then throw them away. This leads to overflowing landfills, air and water pollution, and quickly disappearing resources. The World Economic Forum predicts that, if our habits don’t change, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050. And I dearly hope that by now we’re all familiar with the reality of climate change and its devastating impact on global ecosystems.

I’m not trying to scare you, but I do want to point out the hypocrisy of drawing power from the Earth in our magic while simultaneously contributing to her destruction. If we truly want to consider ourselves spiritual allies of the planet, we need to make an effort to live our lives — and practice our magic — in ways that are less harmful to her.

You don’t have to become an environmentalist or switch to a zero waste lifestyle, but we can all make little changes for a more sustainable life. There’s lots of information out there about how to live a more Earth-friendly lifestyle, so in this post I’ll be focusing on how to apply that same philosophy to your witchcraft.

Steps to a more Earth-Friendly Practice:

Limiting your consumption will automatically lower your negative impact on the planet. Follow my previous guidelines for avoiding consumerism to start shrinking your carbon footprint.

Avoid plastic as much as possible. According to the WEF, 70% of our plastic ends up in a landfill or in the world’s waterways, and according to Julia Watkins, author of Simply Living Well, only 9% of household plastics get recycled. Plastic (unlike glass and metal) cannot be recycled indefinitely — it can only be recycled a handful of times before it becomes too degraded to be repurposed any further. There really is no way to make plastic safer for the planet, so it’s best to just avoid it altogether. Look for tools made of metal, wood, or glass instead of plastics, and try to order things shipped in paper and cardboard when possible.

Create spells that won’t leave leftovers. One of the big contributing factors to our current environmental crisis is that we just produce too much waste. You can avoid this in your magical practice by crafting spells that won’t leave you throwing away a big ball of candle wax, herbs, and paper. Kitchen magic is a no-brainer for this, since kitchen spells are meant to be eaten. If you want to do a candle spell, use small candles that will burn up completely — I find larger candles are more likely to leave leftover wax. Making magical bath salts is another great option for leftover-free spells — just make sure everything you include is safe to go down the drain and won’t contribute to water pollution!

Forage for your own spell materials. One of the best ways to avoid plastic packaging and cut down on emissions from shipping is to use materials from your backyard! Learn about the plants, animals, and minerals native to your area, and take regular nature walks where you can gather what you need. Remember to only take as much as you need and to be careful never to damage the plants you harvest from. Make sure to carefully disinfect any animals bits you pick up — you can do this by burying them in salt for a full moon cycle and/or setting them in the sun/under a UV light for several days. If you find a dead animal and want to strip and clean its bones for use in ritual, this is a much more involved process and will require special research, equipment, and lots of time. And, of course, never eat anything you have foraged unless you happen to have an advanced degree in botany.

Keep a magical garden. Another great way to connect with the planet and shrink your carbon footprint is to grow your own herbs, vegetables, and fruits. You can, of course, grow food for your kitchen if you have space, but even if you live in a tiny apartment you can grow a handful of magical herbs in pots. Shop for spell materials at a local farmer’s market. Buying local is a great way to avoid the environmental impact of shipping produce, and it allows you to support small farms. Farmer’s markets also typically carry seasonal produce, which can help you align your magical practice with the cycles of nature. Farmer’s markets are a great way to find seasonal fruits and vegetables for kitchen magic, but you can use the produce you find there for other types of spells as well.

Trade paraffin wax candles for beeswax or soy wax. Paraffin, the material used for most cheap candles, is a by-product of crude oil, which is not only highly unsustainable but contains carcinogens (chemicals that may cause cancer). Beeswax is a sustainable alternative, and beeswax candles produce a “clean” burn, meaning it does not negatively affect air quality. Soy wax is a slightly pricier, vegan-friendly sustainable option that also produces a clean burn.

Use undyed, unbleached paper for your written spells. The bleaches and dyes used in most commercially available paper have a toxic effect on the environment. Colored paper cannot be recycled or composted because it will contaminate everything it touches. Use plain, unbleached paper for your written spells, especially if you plan to bury them in the ground or dispose of them outside.

Make sure your essential oils are ethically harvested. Essential oils are tricky — although they are marketed as natural, many of them are produced through unsustainable methods. Because essential oils are concentrated, it may take thousands of pounds of plants to produce a single pound of oil. This can have a devastating impact, especially for endangered plants like white sage or palo santo. Look for ethically-sourced, wild-harvested essential oils — these are oils that are gathered from the wild in ways that don’t hurt the local ecosystem. Mountain Rose Herbs and Eden’s Garden are two brands that are committed to sustainable essential oil production.

Instead of burying a spell in a jar, bury it in a hollowed-out fruit or vegetable. Many traditions call for spells to be buried in the ground. Items like jar spells and witch bottles are traditionally buried on the witch’s property. The problem with this is that plastic and glass bottles do not biodegrade, and will remain in the ground for years. Instead of putting these materials in the ground, bury your spells in a hollowed-out fruit or vegetable. As a bonus, you can choose this item to support your intention. For example, you might use an apple for a love spell or a spicy pepper for protection. Just make sure everything inside the spell is also biodegradable!

Keep a compost pile as an offering to your local land spirits. Compost is an easy way to reduce food waste, and it gives your garden a boost! Even if you don’t have your own garden, you can give your compost to a fiend who does or look into donating it to a community garden. When composting, it’s important to maintain a balance between carbon-rich “brown” ingredients (leaves, undyed paper, cardboard, etc.) and nitrogen-rich “greens” (fruit and veggie scraps, coffee grounds, egg shells, etc.) — you want about four times as much brown as green in your compost. Start your compost with a layer of brown — preferably twigs or straw to allow good airflow. Alternate layers of green and brown materials as you add to the pile. Every time you add to your compost, verbally express your gratitude to the land spirits. Your compost should be moist, but not soggy — you’ll know it’s ready when it’s dark and crumbly and smells like soil.

Make your own tea blends with loose herbs and a reusable tea strainer instead of buying teabags. Witches and tea go together like peanut butter and chocolate, but the individual wrappers on teabags create a lot of waste. On top of that, since many of these wrappers are dyed, they may not even be recyclable. Keep your teas earth-friendly by buying dried herbs in bulk and blending your own teas. Making your own blends is not only better for the planet, but also allows you to choose each ingredient for a specific magical intention.

Find ways to use your trash in your craft. This one is pretty self-explanatory. Instead of throwing things away, find ways to use them in your magic! Use food scraps from cooking, like carrot greens and potato peels, in spells. Turn an old shoe box into a travel altar. Add your coffee grounds to spells to ground them and manifest results in the physical world. You get the idea. Be creative!

Research different models for Earth-friendly living, like the zero waste/low waste lifestyle, sustainability, and the solarpunk movement. This will give you more ideas for a sustainable lifestyle, as well as a sustainable magical practice.

The funny thing about Earth-friendly living is that, the more time you spend taking care of the planet, the more connected you feel to it. I encourage you to try some of the ideas on this list — you’ll be amazed by how quickly you develop a deeper relationship with the Earth and all her creatures.

spring cleaning

there’s a pack rat in the family. who it is will not surprise you.

notes: hi! this is just a quick little fic as i beta and finish off the next chapter of debutante. this is based off the gilmore girls season three episode twelve “lorelai out of water” cold open. takes place the spring after the main storyline, after alliance but before debutante.

virgil’s phone buzzes at 10:13 am on a sunny spring sunday. he pauses just after he drops off the brunch plates for mrs. torres, babette, and east side tilly, digging around in his back pocket to squint at his recent texts.

logan sanders: Please help.

any other time, this kind of text would probably send anxiety flooding his veins like ice water. as he’s been warned, sure, he’s a little anxious that he’s misreading the situation, but he shakes that aside and snorts.

“called it,” he mutters under his breath, before he wipes his hands on his apron and types out christ, you’re folding easy this year. is that a new record?

a brief pause. then, No, the record was twenty-four minutes. To be fair, that took place when I was ten years old, we were moving into the house, and you were already going to be involved, so I perhaps I should propose that does not count against my spring cleaning record.

ah, that’s right. god, helping patton move had kind of been a nightmare. helping anyone move is a bit of a nightmare, but with patton there’s a whole new layer of shenanigans.

Another buzz. Also, I need this to be hastened along. I have a Socratic seminar in English tomorrow, and though we have settled on a tentative truce I refuse to let Dee achieve the highest grade in the class.

he shoots back i’ll be there asap.

“jean,” he calls to the counter, but jean, having been warned as well, waves him off.

“i got it, at least he waited till the we hit the between-masses lull.”

“you’re the best,” he says, hanging up his apron and ignoring mrs. torres’ hoots about his arms—he's like ninety percent sure she’s spiking her own orange juice so she can have a screwdriver with her pancakes but he hasn’t caught her with a flask in hand yet—and heads out the door.

the citizens of sideshire are fully soaking in the pleasure of a sunny spring day—it’s one of those days, where the weather’s warming up slowly, but there’s sure to be more cold snaps before they fully settle into spring, so lots of people are taking advantage of it. families are sprawled with picnic blankets in the grassy town square. the “long-haired freak” (taylor’s nickname, not his. virgil’s pretty sure his name is dave, but also, he’s not totally sure his name is dave, and as such usually avoids any complications by saying “hey, man,” whenever virgil sees him) is out hawking fruits and vegetables from his garden. lots of people are out on walks, some with earbuds or headphones on, some calling out jolly greetings to other people taking advantage of a blue sky and temperatures that are soaring above freezing.

“hey, virgil.”

“hey, felix,” virgil says, craning his neck to catch sight of—well, he guesses felix and riley are technically his tenants? but that always feels weird to say—his neighboring business owners. felix is busy making sure a promotional poster’s taped to the window. “how’re things?”

“ah, y’know, y’know,” felix says, waving their hands around. “weather’s warming up, so we’re getting into busy season. guess people want to be able to flaunt new ink in the warmer weather, y’know?”

“hey, speaking of—” virgil says.

“oh, yeah,” felix says, scratching at the half of their head that was once shaved bald but is now growing in stubbly. “you wanna have riley do one this time? they can draw up some sketches for you, if you want. or i can, if you want, but it might be a minute ‘cause i’m all hands on deck for this massive full-back piece.”

“nah, riley’ll be cool, it’s been a minute since they’ve done one for me,” virgil says. “i’ll drop by later with some reference photos, ideas and stuff.”

“i’ll make sure they’re refreshed on what your style is before the consultation,” felix says. “appreciate the business.”

“appreciate you and your spouse taking over this empty shop so taylor didn’t get a chance to,” virgil returns, as he usually does whenever felix or their riley thanks him for something. he’s really awkward about accepting gratitude, he’s working on that with emile and patton.

“god, could you imagine taylor next door,” felix says with a theatric shudder. “bad enough he runs half the town.”

“i’ll call tomorrow to make the appointment?”

felix flashes him a thumbs up, and virgil raises a hand in farewell as he continues on his way.

he ends up pushing his sleeves up to his elbows as he walks to the sanders’ house, occasionally saying hey to other residents of sideshire, or tilting his face up to the sun.

this winter’s been brutal, even worse than it usually is for the northeast, with absurd amounts of blizzards and ice. on the days where it wasn’t shoveling ridiculous amounts of snow on the whole town, the sky had been gray and overcast, and what little sun there was could barely stream weakly through the clouds.

but now, the sun sinks softly into his exposed skin, warming him without overheating him thanks to the breeze, carrying the sweet scent of tentatively blooming flowers planted by particularly audacious gardeners.

it is a perfect, lovely spring day.

by the time he gets to the cheerful yellow clapboard house, he’s taken enough deep, calming breaths to ensure that he is a calming presence. he ascends the stairs of the wraparound porch—oh, huh, looks like patton or logan’s making an attempt at being a gardener, that looks like mountain mint—and knocks lightly on the front door.

“please come in,” logan shouts, sounding exasperated, and virgil obligingly pushes the door open.

he toes off his shoes, even as he overhears patton’s voice, cajoling.

“hug-a-world! c’mon, you’ve gotta remember your hug-a-world!”

hug-a-world, virgil mouths to himself, before it comes back to him in sudden, vivid technicolor and he rounds the corner.

and, sure enough, surrounded by the detritus of the sanders home, patton and logan sit in a hastily-cleared space in the middle of their living room, patton holding a stuffed ball tight to his chest.

“of course i remember the hug-a-world,” logan says, still with that tone of exasperation, but lessened now at the sight of a beloved childhood toy.

“you can’t make me throw away your hug-a-world,” patton declares viciously, which would almost be believably threatening if he were not clutching a stuffed ball made to look like a globe to his chest, and if his curly hair was not sticking up in a configuration that virgil thinks of as chaotically unruly, and if he were not wearing a pink-and-blue sweater he usually busts out around easter, and if someone did not know patton as a person. “you learned all seven of your continents on hug-a-world!”

see, without fail, almost every year patton gets suckered into the whole concept of the spring clean. and, without fail, logan or virgil will try to point out that he does this every year, and patton insists no, really, this time for sure he’ll get rid of some of the clutter around this house, it’s about time!, and then he gets sidetracked getting attached to objects he finds that he suddenly cannot bear to get rid of, despite the fact that said objects have typically been buried away in a dark closet all the rest of the year.

which means that logan and virgil sit with him and try to point that out, and patton wavers, before he decides to keep or donate or trash it, and it seems like it’s going okay, until the next thing he touches turns out to be another thing that he suddenly cannot bear to give up.

it’s gotten a little better since that time they introduced the marie kondo method, but also, that much worse, because of course he insists that everything sparks joy!

but this is way more mess than usual. there are cardboard boxes and piles of clothes and bits and bobs that are in piles that come up to his ribs. virgil squints it at it suspiciously.

“attic,” logan says wearily, in explanation. “he got boxes out of the attic.”

oh, shit, the attic. god, that thing is stuffed to the brim with boxes, no wonder the living room looks like someone upended the odds-and-ends drawer for a giant into the house.

“but—c’mon,” patton says, in that same sweetly coaxing tone that usually makes them all throw up their hands and leave the rest of this spring cleaning mess for next year’s spring clean. he holds out the hug-a-world to logan. “hold it. marie says so.”

“marie does not realize that she has a special case with my hoarder of a father and therefore should customize the approach of sparks joy, because you have too wide a definition,” logan says, but he reaches out and takes the hug-a-world with both hands anyways.

virgil examines logan holding it, thinking suddenly of a much tinier logan with a gap in his front teeth holding the same toy in the same way, though the fabric had been much more vibrant shades of blue and green then. there had been a solid stretch of time that the hug-a-world had been the toy that logan had hugged falling asleep, back in the poolhouse. he’d taken the hug-a-world to the diner and to school and all around the inn and to the princes’ apartment and back again.

a side of logan’s mouth twitches up, and then, as if suddenly conscious of it, he forces the corners of his mouth to turn down as he stares at it.

“remember?” patton repeats, staring at logan and the hug-a-world fondly. “we used to take turns to squeeze it as tight as we could and then wherever our pinkies would end up, that’s where we were going to go together when you grew up.”

“yes,” logan says, and then loses the fight against his mouth, because it twitches up into a smile again. “many a trip to uzbekistan was planned that way.”

“look!” patton says, pointing and tilting his head. “that’s canada, then, where’d your other one get you?”

logan moves his other pinky in order to squint at the faded fabric. “i believe that’s cambodia. possibly vietnam, i was rather splitting the border.”

“why not both?” patton says pragmatically, or as pragmatically as he can sound planning a potential trip based off hugging a ball.

logan hesitates, holding the ball.

“look,” patton says. “hey, how about virgil helps clean it up, and the hug-a-world can live in your room?”

logan chews at the inside of his lip.

“if it sparks joy,” patton sing-songs.

logan heaves a sigh.

“the hug-a-world will live in my room, then,” he says, before looking to virgil. “we’ve started a pile for you right here,” and pats a pile of what mostly looks like clothes that can be either repaired, repurposed, or sneakily donated.

virgil takes a breath, and says, “i’ll crack open a window and put on some music, then. patton, you take your allergy medicine today?”

patton tilts his head to think about it.

“that’s a no,” virgil says. “i’ll grab it on the way. water, snacks? we’re gonna be here for a while.”

“are we?” logan says doubtfully, twisting to look at him.

“we are finishing spring clean this year!” patton insists. “i mean it this time!”

logan arches his eyebrows at virgil, and virgil mouths play along, and logan sighs before he turns back to the pile, pulling out an old jacket at random.

“i have never seen you wear this. it should be donated.”

“that was from raf, we can’t just toss it!” patton cries out in dismay, and virgil heads for the kitchen.

he fills up three glasses of water, chops up some celery and apples, fills up three mini ramekins with peanut butter, and sets it all on a tray, along with the round white pill that patton takes for his allergies.

he plugs in his phone and scrolls to a roman-made playlist, lowering the volume so that they’ll be able to hear each other, and proceeds to make his meandering way around the piles of Stuff as best he can without knocking anything over.

on his way, he moves to crack open the windows of the living room, allowing the floral-scented air to waft into the messy room, to hear the chirping of the birds under patton and logan’s debating.

he pushes aside a pile of old books on the coffee table and sets the tray down, mostly ignored as logan manages to triumph and tosses the jacket into a box labeled DONATE.

virgil settles down next to his pile, sitting in criss-cross-applesauce, and gosh all of the clutter of patton and logan’s lives looms over them like a mountain at this angle.

“okay,” virgil says encouragingly. “good, that’s good! raf’s old jacket will probably make some other teenager very happy to have it.”

patton sighs, staring after the jacket. “yeah, i guess.”

“this is good,” virgil says stubbornly, before tugging at a piece of fabric sticking out at random and unearthing a blanket.

“oh, i was wondering where that got off to!” patton says, delighted.

“i thought that got lost in the moving shuffle,” virgil agrees, because the last time he saw this he was pretty sure it was tossed over the back of their rented apartment couch.

“so this blanket has not been washed in at least six years,” logan says.

“well, that can be fixed!” patton points out. “i say keep.”

“we’re never going to finish,” logan groans.

“of course we’re gonna finish!” patton says.

“yeah, logan,” virgil says unconvincingly. “listen to your dad.”

patton beams at him, leaning over to kiss him on the cheek; logan rolls his eyes, before he turns his attention to the blanket.

“so, you claim keep for your room,” logan says. “you already have so many blankets.”

“well, we can always use more blankets!” patton points out. “worse comes to worse, we’ll put it in the linen closet.”

logan tilts his head, before he sighs, and places it in a pile of other fabrics that they seem to have decided to keep.

“all right, fine,” he says, then fishes out another piece of fabric. “next item—”

“look how fast we settled that!” patton says brightly.

“pretty fast,” virgil agrees dutifully.

This wasn’t a normal crime, it was something supernatural. He contacts his brother Sam (and possibly his secretary Y/N) and sets off into his secret, second life.

The junky composite drawing laid on the detective’s messy desk. He has been there for hours upon hours trying to connect the puzzle pieces of the crime. Investigator, Dean, had nothing, no set in stone suspect, barely any eyewitnesses and the murder weapon gave no insight to tie the murder to their crime. It felt like a massive dead end, no matter what door he opened or which way he turned.His frazzled mind even resorted to any method, no matter how absurd or old-fashioned, to try and connect at least one stray line of evidence, which ended in knots of red yarn to be strung from a makeshift posterboard to the metal door handle parallel to the cursed remainings of the crime. Dean sat at his office desk, hands in his head, attempting to string any leads to a whole.

“You’re still here, son? Dean lifted his gaze off of the painted, menacing scowl. His friend Bobby was at the door, that man was like a father to him. He really cared about Bobby, even though they fought like tigers most of the time. Bobby's eyes glanced around the newfound mess floating around the room.

“I need to find some sort of new evidence, there are just constant dead ends.”"A forced chuckle erupted from his throat to clear the elephant in the room, not to mention the dry conversation playing out. Bobby gave a nod in agreement, he too had been constantly working around the clock to locate the sick son of a bitch hacking up innocent people, he took it personally with incidences in the past.

“I just don’t understand why these idgits are so amped up about one ring, doesn’t the family need some kind of closure? Poor woman, I bet she didn’t see herself being put through the wringer like that.” Bobby smiled, “Look at me now, I’m making puns.” He beamed.Dean cocked his head skeptically at the older man, was this a time for jokes? he knew Bobby was lighthearted, but recently something just had to be off. He couldn't put a finger on it, just like the stalemate case. His head had already formed a sickening migraine, pulsing every once and awhile. The small jar of Advil kept in his top drawer couldn't fight it off any longer.

“It was a diamond ring, you don’t see that every day. To be honest, you don't find a mass murder every day too, but here we are.” Dean had given up for the night and began to stuff various papers into his briefcase, making sure to leave all the important items surrounding the mysterious killer in his office. There was no point to agitate himself with it when he should be resting. His leg extended over the leftover materials. If he tripped and made a fool out of himself in front of his higher up would mean a lot of booze and some reoccurring replays in his already clogged mind.

The older man chuckled, “When you’re in this workforce you’ve seen a lot of things Dean.” He took a sip of his coffee, which was odd especially considering the time, it was nearing close to 10 o'clock and the layers of low fog outside meant business. Not to mention Bobby’s disregard for the key problem, this is a rare diamond ring we’re talking about and a murderer, which continuously slipped his mind. Loud music blared in the old Impala, Dean pulled out a small device, flipping it open, and dialed his dear old brother Sammy's number. Before he knew it, there he was. There was an alley in which the suspect had been caught, the person jumped the fence leaving shards of glass all over the perimeter. Blood was smeared on every corner, leaving the victim in a crumpled bundle on the earthy floor. To make it even better, her arms were sheared right off by the bone, the legs were left with gashes half-way cut, as if the assaulter was rushing, about to be caught. The investigator looked around for a bit until something caught his eye. Through the dried up mounds of vital fluids and minuscule flesh chunks laid a blue fountain pen. Garden boxes have so many advantages over planting straight in the ground. We have a complete step-by-step guide for you to building your own including all materials needed!

Advantages of Garden Boxes

There aren’t many things that I love more than gardening. When February comes I start getting all excited making big plans for my garden. I have planted a garden in the ground for years, but decided to make the switch. These are the advantages that swayed me over to the garden box world:

WAY less weeding. When we built ours, we put newspaper down on the bottom, and then put our soil blend on top. I have a few weeds pop up, but literally probably 1/8 of the weeds with gardening the traditional method.

Saves your back. We built ours pretty high, and there is a lot less bending involved. You can even sit on the edges and reach pretty much the entire bed.

Less messy. We built stone paths in between our boxes (which also cuts WAY down on weeds) and so when I walk out to my garden I never get muddy – even after heavy rain storms. This is a major plus when you have kids and they like to be out in the garden.

Better soil. The soil where is live is definitely not ideal, but the soil in my garden is now ideal because I brought it all in!

Better drainage. When it rains/snows, the moisture is able to drain down instead of puddle on the ground. I never have standing water in my boxes.

Aesthetically appealing. A typical garden is basically just an area of dirt with not much street appeal. But with raised beds, you can design them however you want and they can look really good!

Build Your Own Garden Box Guide

We put together a complete how-to guide for building your own garden boxes from buying the wood to filling them with soil.

Step 1: Draw Plans

The first step in building anything is to draw up thorough plans. For our garden space we drew up our plans in Excel, so we could easily take measurements and calculate the amount of materials we would need to purchase. Our garden plan calls for eight ten foot by six foot garden boxes, some of which have angles to accommodate a circular herb garden in the middle of our garden plot. Here’s an example of our garden plan.

Step 2: Decide Which Type of Wood to Use

We decided to use two 2″ by 8″ redwood planks for each side of the garden box with a 2″ by 6″ plank on top of each side wall to make the boxes look better, and make also serve as a bench. The 2′” by 8″ planks are actually 1.5″ by about 7″ resulting in a height of the garden box of about 14″. This is just deep enough to provide plenty of space to fill with dirt, and is a good height to reduce the amount of bending over you have to do while gardening.

Most garden boxes are made out of redwood or cedar. We chose to make our boxes out of redwood, mostly because we could purchase thicker, more durable boards for less money. The 1.5″ thick redwood planks were almost the same price as the .75″ thick cedar planks, so hopefully this helps the boxes last much longer. Here are all of the boards purchased and ready to go.

Step 3: Cut Your Boards

After you determine which type of wood you will use, then you will begin cutting the support boards. These boards will be used as the frame of the garden box. I cut each support board 18′” so it would be longer than the box is tall. This allows 4 or 5 inches of the board to extend below the garden box to help hold it in place, and to keep the box from bowing due to the weight of the dirt in it. I used a 4″ x 4″ post for each corner of the box, and a 2″ x 8″ board for extra support for each long (10 foot) side of the box.

Next I gathered the materials for the sidewalls of the box.

I cut four pieces of 2″ x 8″ redwood to 10 foot lengths, and four pieces of 2″ x 8″ redwood to 6 foot lengths.

I cut all of the ends of the sidewalls at 45 degree angles using the miter saw so they would fit together nicely at the corners.

Step 4: Begin Assembling Your Boxes

I began assembly by standing up one of the corner posts and attaching one of the 6 foot lengths of redwood and one of the 10 foot lengths of redwood to the post with a brad nailer. The nailer was just used to hold the boards in place while I put the screws in. I attached each board to each post with two 2.5″ galvanized screws.

Next attach the second layer of boards using the same process described above.

View from inside the box. Notice that the box is being built upside down, so if your box is not a square or a rectangle (some of ours weren’t) make sure you put the angles on the opposite side you want them on so when you flip it over they will be on the correct side.

Continue the same process with the second, third, and fourth corner posts.

Last, I screwed in the side supports for the long side of the box.

Next flip the box over to put the top piece of trim on.

Step 5: Add Top Trim Piece

I wanted the trim to overhang the box by about 1.5″, so each piece of 2″ by 6″ trim board has to be cut 3″ longer than the side it’s covering. So the trim for the 6 foot side is cut to a length of 6’3″, and the ten foot side is cut to a length of 10’3″. I cut each trim piece to a 45 degree angle using a miter saw.

Next, using the same 2.5″ galvanized screws, attach the trim pieces to the box.

Repeat this process for each of the four trim pieces on top of the box. Each of these boxes took me about 2.5 hours to build counting the time I spent showing Amelia and Sophie what their jobs were….

Step 6: Place Boxes and Add Soil

Next we laid out the boxes in the garden. Then we dug holes underneath each of the support boards until they were leveled in the garden.

Once they were all leveled, we filled the boxes about 3/4 of the way full of soil. We brought in a special blend of soil.

1/3 screened top soil

1/3 mushroom compost

1/3 nutrimulch (basically turkey manure).

Most nurseries will carry these soil types.

This is how the angled boxes turned out. These are a little more complicated to build than the rectangles, but not too bad once you get the hang of it.

Step 7: Plant Your Garden

Based on what you put in your plan, start planting in your new boxes! This is the fun part and definitely one that your kids will love helping with.

My girls loved helping plant even more than they liked ‘helping’ build the boxes. It was a big project, but so worth it! Eventually we will lay stone paths around the boxes and so we will have virtually no weed issues! The herb garden will be made out of stone as well and built up (next on the project list…..)

Stephen Gill

From Outside In (2010)

Stephen Gill is a British conceptual and experimental photographer. Much like Mandy Barker, I would interpret his work to be a form of conceptual documentary. His photographic process allows both an actual and a conceptual immersion. In his work he records a subject with historical connotations, but through experimental photographic techniques which allow him to incorporate the subject into the image making process. His series titled Outside In, for instance, features the inclusion of objects that Gill sourced from the locations that he shot at in Brighton and Hove during 2010. These foreign objects were inserted directly into the camera whilst exposing the film, resulting in an in-camera photogram.

‘I hoped through this method to encourage the spirit of the place to clamber aboard the images and be encapsulated in the film emulsion, like objects embedded in amber.’

With this work, he manages to evoke sense of place that would not be conjured from just photographing the location. By including these found objects, it is as if he is revealing a hidden part of the place. He draws attention to features that may go unnoticed by others, for instance tiny fragments of broken glass or insects which would be too small to see in a normal photograph. By placing them in the camera, they obstruct the image, and the eye is drawn to them. This also adds new layers of depth to the photograph, as the objects appear on different pictorial planes which disorientates the viewer’s perception. The way that the plants encroach across the frame in some of the images creates the feeling you are peering through them. In others, they almost shroud the entire picture and it feels as if you are surrounded by them, thus creating a sense of immersion.

‘The results included some highly detailed macro recordings amongst and within the landscapes and portraits. I like to think of these photographs as in-camera photograms in which conflict or harmony has been randomly formed in the final image depending on where the objects landed.’

I find it interesting how Gill manages to incorporate the subject physically into his images. The narrative of the project becomes part of the photo making process, adding an additional layer to the work for the viewer to discover. His series Best Before End, for instance, which explores the rise in sales and consumption of energy drinks, features photographs taken on film and soaked in energy drinks. The outcome, distorted and discoloured images, results in is a visual representation of the over-caffeinated, frenzied state imposed by energy drinks, producing a literal demonstration of what the narrative is trying to describe. There is also a certain physicality, in which the subject has a profound presence, as it is a physical part of the images, not just present as a subject but as an essential part of the image making process.

From Buried (2006)

His series Buried features photographs taken around Hackney Wick. The photographs, taken on polaroid, were then later buried at this location. Depending on certain factors such as the depth of burial and soil acidity, each exhumed polaroid reveals different, unique results. In the book which compiles this work, Gill describes this process as a ‘collaboration with place’ which allowed the location to contribute to the visual appearance of the images. I find this phrase particularly interesting as it encapsulates the sense of place that is evoked within this work. It also describes Gill’s hands-off process which, similar to Daro Montag, involves placing a lot of responsibility onto soil as the main contributor to the images that are produced.

This concept of a collaboration with nature is particularly relevant to my interests in working with living things in the soil. I am interested in producing images that aim to capture this invisible presence. I think incorporating burial into the photographic process of my project, collaborating with the microbes in the soil, would allow them to leave a mark the images that I produce. The process of burial in particular holds an element of chance and uncertainty which could be compared to a scientific experiment.

For most people who celebrate Christmas, it would be hard to imagine the holiday without the iconic centerpiece of a decked out evergreen. Each year, an estimated 25 to 30 million Christmas trees are sold in the United States.

But if you’re increasingly worried about the carbon footprint of buying a real tree, there are ways you can recycle it once the holidays have passed. It can be used for mulch or even turned into something edible.

In October, UK-based artisan baker and cook Julia Georgallis published a compilation of more than 30 recipes in a new cookbook, How to Eat Your Christmas Tree, to show readers how to give their tree new life after December 25.

Georgallis sat down with Modern Farmer to talk about why she decided to create dozens of Christmas tree recipes and how a certain type of evergreen makes for an ideal ice cream flavor.

The following interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Modern Farmer: What’s the story behind this book?

Julia Georgallis: I started this project with a good friend of mine in 2015 who does a lot of work around sustainability. She asked me to collaborate with her on a project using that theme with food and we decided to collaborate on something Christmassy because we were in the lead up to Christmas. We initially wondered what we would do and initially weren’t even sure if you could eat your Christmas tree, but it turns out you can.

We started a supper club to cook up the recipes with Christmas trees. But a year later my friend was very pregnant and decided she didn’t want to be in the kitchen anymore. I ran the project on my own with the annual supper club for the rest of the years until 2019. Each year the recipes changed and I wanted to collate them. I enjoyed cooking them and I thought it would be better to share them outside my kitchen and spread the word a bit beyond the 25 people I host.

You said leading up to this project that you initially weren’t sure if people could eat their Christmas trees. Why do you think this is something that’s not well known?

I’ve been thinking about this quite a lot and I don’t know why it’s so weird because we eat and we forage so many different plants. Christmas is a lovely time of year, but I think that everything, including the tree, is now viewed as a commodity. With the Christmas tree, we’re essentially putting houseplants in our house. But we don’t think of them as houseplants anymore. We had rituals based in nature and now we’re just very monetized.

In this book, you talk about how you want it to open up a broader conversation around sustainability. How did you try to do that?

Eating Christmas trees isn’t going to save the planet, but this book draws on the idea that you just need to start thinking about how you might want to reuse, recycle and re-appropriate everything and that includes your Christmas tree. It’s also about making sustainable changes.

I mention in the book that you can use a houseplant rather than a Christmas tree. I’ve used bamboo in some of the recipes because it’s kind of like the Chinese, Korean [or] Japanese equivalent of the Western Christmas tree. There are also sections on how to make Christmas a little bit more sustainable. I tell you where you can get a Christmas tree from a sustainable source. I also offer plant-based alternatives to my meat recipes and encourage readers to purchase meat that’s been sustainably farmed if they so choose to eat meat.

When you were doing your research for the book, what stuck out to you when it came to the environmental footprint of Christmas trees?

The environmental footprint is quite large. If we let 40 million trees grow each year instead of cutting them down at Christmas and sticking them in our living rooms, they could absorb 880 million tonnes of carbon, which is the equivalent to global air traffic in one year or the impact of taking all cars in the UK off the road for the next five years. I know that there are other things that contribute more to our emissions, but these things are up there and I think it’s quite a big deal.

In the book you use recipes that involve pine, fir and spruce trees, as you explain that other types such as cedar and cypress are poisonous to eat. What are the flavor profiles of those three trees and how did you choose trees for certain recipes?

Fir is really zesty and really grassy. I’ve used it in things like pickles, and things that need a sharper taste. Spruce is really surprising. It’s not as grassy, it’s more “orangey.” The spruce in the ice cream I make actually gives it a vanilla taste. The blue spruce ice cream I make is actually my favorite recipe. And doing my research, what I ended up finding out is some of the earlier vanilla extracts, like artificial flavorings, had notes of spruce in them. Then pine doesn’t taste like it smells. It’s very delicate and almost floral. In some of the recipes if I give the option of all three, I say if you’re using pine, you need to use a lot more of it.

Cured fish is wonderful for starters (appetizers), breakfast, or in a very decadent sandwich. Trout is a great option for curing or use other sustainable fish, such as monkfish, halibut, or something recommended by your local fishmonger. Use the freshest fish you can find, making sure it hasn’t been frozen before buying.

Makes: 2 kg (4 lb 8 oz) of fish

Preparation time: 30 minutes + minimum 24 hours, maximum 36 hours for curing time

Ingredients : -2 kg (4 lb 8 oz) filleted fish of your choice -350 g (12 oz) fir or spruce needles or 700 g (1 lb 9 oz) pine needles (or a combination) -770 g (1 lb 11 oz/ 31⁄3 cups) demerara sugar -500 g (1 lb 2 oz/ 11⁄2 cups) table salt -2 small beetroots (beets), grated -grated zest of 3 lemons

Method: Before you cure, it is good practice to freeze the fish as this kills any bacteria that might be present. You can ‘flash freeze’ for 24 hours, but I like to freeze the fish for about a week. Defrost it in the refrigerator a few hours before you start curing.

Prepare the needles: Spruce, fir and pine needles can be very sharp, so care must be taken not to hurt your fingers while preparing them for cooking. You will need a pair of large, sharp scissors and a big bowl. Snip some larger branches from your tree. Wash the branches under cold, running water, making sure that you get rid of all possible bits of mud and dirt. You may notice that there are balls of sap, but this is safe to eat, as are the dried buds, which might be at the end of some of the branches. Turn the branch upside down over a bowl so that the needles make a chevron shape. Using scissors, cut upwards so that the needles fall directly into the bowl. I usually then wash the snipped needles once more before using them.

To make the cure, mix the sugar, salt, grated beetroot, lemon zest and needles together.

Lay out some cling film (plastic wrap) on a flat surface and sprinkle a generous layer of the curing mixture over it, making sure it is roughly the length and width of the fillet.

You might need an extra pair of hands for this next step: lay the fish over the first layer of cure, then pack the top and sides of the fillet with the rest of the cure and wrap tightly in cling film, making sure it is totally covered in the cure mixture.

Place the fish on a baking tray (sheet pan) underneath something heavy, and refrigerate between 24 and 36 hours. Halfway through the curing process, turn the fish over, remembering to place it under something heavy again.

When it is ready to eat, wash off the cure and make sure there are no needles left on the fish. Slice thinly.

This keeps in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

I love a good pickle. Either use infused Christmas Tree Vinegar or apple cider vinegar to make these or use fresh needles and leave to pickle for a couple of extra weeks. Use whichever vegetable you like and is in season. Carrots and cucumbers work well and add beetroot (beets) for some extra colour.

Makes: Enough to fill a 2-litre (70-fl oz/8-cup) jar

Preparation time: 3 days + 1 month (minimum 5 days) pickling time

Equipment: a 2-litre (70-fl oz/8-cups) glass jar with a lid, a Kilner or Mason jar is ideal

Ingredients : -A handful of spruce, pine or fir needles -2 litres (70 fl oz/8 cups) either Christmas Tree Vinegar (page 44) or apple cider vinegar -50 g (2 oz/1⁄2 cup) salt flakes -900 g (2 lb/4 cups) demerara sugar -700 g (1 lb 9 oz) ribbons of beetroot (beets), carrots, cucumber (preferably a mix of all three) -a handful of juniper berries

Method: Sterilize the jar and prepare the needles (see cured fish recipe for the instructions on this).

In a saucepan, heat up the vinegar, salt and sugar until just boiling.

Arrange the beetroot, carrots, cucumber, needles and juniper berries at the bottom of the jar and pour in the pickling liquid.

Tightly seal the jar. Turn it upside down once, quickly, to get rid of any extra air. Once cooled, either leave in a cool, dark place or in the refrigerator. Leave for a minimum of 5 days before opening. Keep for 2 weeks once opened.

This is hands down my favorite recipe from the supper club, and I have shared it generously over the years with anyone who will listen. I like to use blue spruce, as I think it is the champion of conifers (it tastes a little like vanilla), but, as with all these recipes, you can interchange the type of Christmas tree you use depending on what you have access to.

Makes: 950 g (2 lb 2 oz) of ice cream

Preparation Time: 2 hours with an ice-cream maker, 4 hours without one

Ingredients: -300 g (101⁄2 oz) blue spruce needles or 400 g (14 oz) any other type of Christmas tree needles -510 ml (17 fl oz/2 cups) double (heavy) cream -170 ml (6 fl oz/3/4 cup) whole (full-fat) milk (ideally Jersey milk) -170 g (6 oz/3/4 cup) caster (superfine) sugar -8 egg yolks -5 pieces stem ginger, chopped

Method:

Prepare the needles (see first cured fish recipe for this info).

In a heavy-bottomed saucepan whisk the cream, milk, sugar and egg yolks until well combined.

Add the needles to the cream mixture and heat gently, stirring continuously so that the mixture doesn’t catch on the bottom or sides of the pan.

After 15 minutes, turn the heat up to medium. When bubbles begin to appear around the edge of the pan, the custard is ready and can be removed from the heat.

Sieve the mixture two or three times through a fine sieve (fine mesh strainer) so that none of the needles end up in the final ice cream mixture.

If using an ice-cream maker, add the sieved mixture to the churning pot and begin the churning process. Before it freezes, add the chopped stem ginger and continue churning until it is frozen. Transfer the frozen ice cream to the freezer.

If you don’t own an ice-cream maker, transfer the mixture to a tub or dish and leave to cool completely. Once cooled, transfer to the freezer. Stir the mixture every hour and when it is beginning to freeze (about 2 hours) but not completely solid, add the chopped stem ginger and mix well. Continue stirring each hour until the ice cream is completely frozen. This will take about 4 hours.

Once it is frozen, keep it in the freezer until ready to serve.
