hi! hope this is an alright question to ask, but i really really wanted to start adding IDs to my posts and stuff! im worried my IDs that ive done before are too long and detailed, so do you have any tips for ID writing? thank you in advance if you answer this!! =^.^=

QUESTIONS OF LOVE AND JOY

Tbh the biggest bit of advice I can give to anyone wanting to write IDs is that literally any ID is better than no ID even if you think it's too long. Genuinely just give it a shot and the more you do it the more you'll get a feel for it, just like any other skill!

If it's my own post, I start by identifying the type of image ("a screenshot of", "fanart of", "original character art of"), then identify the subject, then a quick verb or adjective about the subject. So

[ID: (image type) of (subject). (Subject) is (adjective and/or verb). End ID]

Yoinking my pfp: [ID: a PNG (image type) of a sticker sheet (subject) of holographic stars, moons and suns (adjective!). End ID]

Everyone who uses IDs will have different preferences for them. U could ask 20 people who require IDs for images about them and get 20 different answers. AFAIK the general consensus is that many prefer brief IDs because screen readers take yonks to read it out? But you do want to make sure you don't miss out relevant context.

IME the most accessible thing to do is write one directly under the original post (NO read more) and in plain text. small text (small text) or coloured text (coloured text) might or might not be picked up by screen readers but is gonna be difficult to read for many people with low vision, which is the main demographic IDs are used for.

uhh what else. There's a difference between an ID (image description under the post) and ALT text (embedded in the html of the image) and there's no single agreement on which is better (see paragraph 2) but sometimes a screen reader will skip the whole post if there's an image with no ALT text. Good practice is to put a very brief (1-2 sentences) in ALT text and the fuller ID under the post, like how my mutual's done it here.

Also also if you want to make a huge difference to accessibility on your blog you can search through the notes of a post to see if there's already one (copy and paste it to your version if you want a different reblog chain! the writer won't mind!) and tag image posts with no ID as #undescribed or equivalent.

My biggest issue with said character and the fans

The same buddies who jumped ship, are now the ones calling other buddies deulusional. Like it’s weird and disgusting behavior. The same ones who HC buck as queer coded for YEARS but throw a tantrum over people doing the same for Eddie. This notion that buck is now endgame with Tommy ONLY 20 minutes of screen time. The way we can’t anyone put out fun and silly theories without being called stupid or “bed bugs”. It’s sad. It’s truly sad to see how the fandom changed so quickly within 3-4 months. Just because of a SIDE character who buck is seeing. The way they try and excuse his racist POS behavior through him “being in the closet” and his boss…. If that’s the case, buck should also now become a racist and a POS right? Because Gerard doesn’t know about buck. So buck should follow… the way they continue to HC Tommy as this victim and HC these crazy things about and his childhood. Or HC him being Nuero divergent or autistic. It’s like, they are trying to find ANYTHING to excuse his behavior. The way they try and make him friends with chim and hen. The way they YAPPED for months on how he was redeemed yet are now making statements “his redemption arc is starting”. So which is it? The way they accuse of hen xzy for asking said character about his INTENTIONS yet in the same breath they are friends?!?!? That’s the issue. They don’t want their fav to have any accountability.

It's truly amazing how they think buddie won't canon simply because buck has been in a on screen relationship with HIS FIRST RELATIONSHIP for MAYBE 20 minutes? Like 20 minutes. That's me being generous. Yet, in those 20 minutes, there have been more people choosing the LI (the GUEST STAR) over the MAIN CHARACTER. More DEFENDERS for the GUEST STAR over the MAIN CHARACTER. More pfp and accounts about the GUEST STAR vs the MAIN ACTOR/CHARACTER. more pushback to LIKE THE GUEST CHARACTER vs the MAIN CHARACTER and his PREVIOUS LIs. VALID criticism regarding the MAIN CHARACTER previous LIs was allowed but NOT this one? If you hate THIS LI just like you HATED THE OTHERS THAT CAME BEFORE, you're deemed homophobic.... literally, WHERE IN THE HISTORY OF THE SHOW WAS THERE THIS MUCH “ride or ride” over the husband/wife/gf/bf?????? And A LOVE INTEREST WHO JUST STARTED DATING the main character???? where was this PUSHBACK for Ali? For Taylor? For Natalia?

Literally..... all this, over a man who has less than 23 minutes of screen time in s7. I ask, if you REALLY “LOVE” TMMY THE TALKING TREE TRUNK, where was this “love" back in s2 BEFORE he kissed buck.

Also I think it is very. Strange to be "calling out" specific blogs but do so by using arguments against things those people never said. There are a handful of people who have called [redacted] a predator or called the whole date scene sexual harassment and if they want to call out homophobic undertones with that, sure. But that's not what the specific people that are being vague or directly posted about have ever said. It is also a pretty small minority of people saying that and isn't the main consensus but still understandable if it is something that they want to address, but again the people they are referring to never said that.

While we are here I will give my reasons for not liking [redacted] or the ship in order of how they developed:

1. Did not like him in his previous appearances

2. People started defending racism and calling poc homophobic for being uncomfortable with his return/being a potential love interest

3. Didn't like that they bounded over Buck hurting Eddie

4. Return of the "if you aren't jumping for joy over this you're homophobic"

9. Didn't like that Buck was at the back and then ditched his sister's wedding for his date

I've been getting a lot of notes from blogs with default icons and no descriptions, and look:

If you follow me, for the love of what is holy, put an actual image for your icon. Or pfp if you're Gen Z I guess.

It doesn't have to be anything fancy. You can literally just put a square image of a single color (one of my longest mutuals here has had exactly that as their icon since I met them). Image search for something you like and put it as an icon. Heck, if you want to be funny you can print-screen your current default icon, flip it 180 degrees on MS Paint and then put that as your icon. Anything as long as it's nothing explicit cause that's a surefire way to get blocked.

Also write something in your description. It can be anything, from a quick intro to what your main fandom is or a quote or a joke or an "I'm just here to like stuff". We don't judge and we don't block just for that.

But we do block, or at least get anxious around, blogs that only have default icons and no description. Because that's what bot accounts do and we don't want anything to do with them.

Changing your icon and writing something in your description takes just two minutes and can save you from a lot of trouble, both you and the people you follow.

I got Tumblr because a friend told me to get it. But this side blog I started because I discovered football tumblr during the euros, which I really was not aware of existing, and was like yess!! finally i can talk about football without annoying the hell out of somebody (because literally none of my friends like football & my family knows nothing about it - except for maybe die eintracht due to loyalty to out hometown).

this was the picture that technically started it all for me.

so long story (that you can skip if you want, i don’t care) my parents took me to stare at cars in a dealership one afternoon when i was about nine years old. i was dragging my feet/complaining about being there, so they had me sit in a chair and wait. now i hadn’t brought anything to read. i was bored out of my mind and settled on staring at the pictures on the walls. right next to me was this picture of a woman standing next to a yellow-and-white car against a backdrop of a mountain.

my first thought was, “that’s a pretty car.” my second was, “wow, she’s beautiful.” third, “i wonder if she’s asian?” because she had long black hair like me. so i spent a lovely hour piecing together a story about her in my head before my parents came back and collected me, and i promptly forgot about the whole thing even though it was arguably a formative Fruity Moment.

fast forward to a few months ago, when i was doing research for something else and came across the same picture. i remembered being 9 and seeing michèle mouton’s picture on the wall, and decided to read her wikipedia page. lo and behold: i became a motorsport fan.

This is a sort of Check-in Tag game thing? I was tagged by @vikingstrash, so thank you dear!

1. Why did you choose your url?

I used to have a different tumblr, and then my sister saw me on it and literally took the mouse and made me follow her own tumblr, and it made me So Immensely uncomfortable, I immediately went and made a whole new blog, and messaged all my mutuals privately to tell them I was moving so my sister wouldn't find out. As I struggled to come up with something more creative than 'time-lady," I remembered one of my mom's favorite sayings, "Reality sucks, live in fiction" and since livinginfiction was taken, my friend (who was helping with the crisis) and I added an 's.' Voila. Seven years later, it's the only username i have online. XD

2. Any side blog?

Three, actually. We've got @merthurismycrack where I reblog Merthur shit, @samspsychicpowers for some SPN stuff, and the side blog that's basically my main blog at this point: @asterekmess which is where all my Teen Wolf and Sterek stuff goes.

3. How long have you been on tumblr?

Uhhh, I've been on this blog since August of 2014, but my old blog was started in....March 2013. I've been around a fucking while.

4. Do you have a queue tag?

HA. Fuck no. Do I look that organized? Y'all get three hours of spam reblogs, and then I disappear into the aether. How it should be. XD

5. Why did you start your blog in the first place?

This is essentially the same as I said for question one. Sister found the old blog, and I needed a new one. I tend to make my side blogs for more pointed material, so that my main blog can have like...the amalgamation of general stuff i like, and then I can keep the fandomy content more concentrated into the side blogs.

6. Why did you choose your icon/pfp?

Originally, I did not have this icon. I had this pic I found online with these Beautiful bronze wings against a black background. But then, around the time I decided I wanted to sort of...simplify things and make my username for my online stuff all the same, with all the same pfp's so that I was easily recognized, etc, I realized that....that picture was not mine. I didn't design it or anything. And i couldn't find its source to ask for permission to use it. And it started making me feel shitty for using it in the first place. So I spent like an hour and a half trying to make my Own Wing pic to use, and failed miserably. As a last ditch effort, i went through my 'artistic' photos on my phone and found this one. I adore sky pics, and cloud pics, etc, so it was super my thing, and I just slapped it on there. Still not sick of it. XD I also went to my side blogs and changed out the pfp's for photos that I'd taken, except the sterek blog, because that one is literally just a black triskelion on a white background, and it's a pretty non-specific thing. I would have used a picture of my Own Tattoo, but it's very hard to get a picture of my back that doesn't have weird lighting, and I'm just too lazy.

7. Why did you choose your header?

All my headers are also photos that I've taken or art pieces that I've made. In the case of this blog, it's a picture I made with a 'galaxy maker' online thingy. I love green. I love blue. Ta dah. In general i just try to find something that gives me the right vibes or has the right color palette to match what it's for. (orange and blue for sterek, trees for merlin, and wings for spn)

8. What’s your post with the most notes?

On this blog? I.....just spent two hours digging through all my posts tagged 'personal' bc i wanted the post that I MADE with the most notes...and i have no idea. I mostly respond to other posts, rather than making my own. The highest note count i can find is a post i made abt having friends that aren't in your fandom, which means you can use inspirational quotes to help them through tough times without them realizing ur quoting doctor who or something. 22 notes. *fingerguns* I'm famous, i know.

Uh, nearly every day, multiple times a day. Sometimes i forget it exists for a couple days, though. It's my only social media. I dont use twitter or facebook or instagram. I Have Accounts, but I literally dont open those apps more than once a month.

My sterek blog gets in fights more often than it should. XD I'm feisty. And I dunno who wins, i think no one. it's tumblr. there's no real winning or losing.

1. why did you choose your url?

When I first started social media type stuff, I had just gotten a kitten named Pogo. She was the first cat I’d ever had who was all mine, not my family’s. Hence Pogokitten. Unfortunately Pogo passed away last year very unexpectedly (she was only 9) and I miss my kitty lots. Since then Pogokitten has just been one of the ways I remember her and it’s sort of stuck with me after 9 years.  

2. any side-blogs? if you have them, name them and why you have them.

This is my side-blog, and I’ve got an art side blog @pogokittenart that I haven’t touched in a long while, probably at least 2 years now. This blog is for fic stuff, which is where most of my focus is anyway now, and the art one was for when I was doing art more often in college. 

My main blog is @pogokitten2 but seriously, I almost never use it anymore and it’s mostly weeb stuff. 

3. how long have you been on Tumblr?

Oh jeez I dunno, uh, maybe since 2011 or 2012? I made it back in high school.

No. I queue things once in the bluest of moons.

5. why did you start your blog in the first place?

I started this blog not too long after I started writing fic again in my senior year of college. I wanted a place to advertise my fics and interact with other authors. It actually started out exclusively for Chrobin (a ship from FE:A) and then I just sort of scooted over to Irondad and general writing memes. 

6. why did you choose your icon/pfp?

I drew my Icon. It’s me, in my very cartoony style. 

7. why did you choose your header?

It’s a screen shot from the anime “My Roommate is a Cat”. I just thought that particular scene was relatable, and well... cats. 

8. what's your post with the most notes?

No clue! If I had to guess I’d say either one of the links to STARWS or maybe the Friendly Neighborhood exchange fic I posted directly to tumblr.

I wanna say, maybe 10. Not sure.

I try really hard not to get into fights. I’m pretty chill and my job literally revolves around client relations and conflict management. I can’t even remember the last argument I had, but I doubt I won. I’m generally a doormat, especially face to face.

I don’t like them. There are better ways to get people involved in good causes aside from guilt. It’s not productive for either side in the long run.

I think it's very obvious with the amount of screen time they get on my blog and soon in my fic lol, but I'm just gonna say it again because I want to lol: Chiba is my son, my precious child, my babie, and I will do anything within my power to write a fic and draw art to make sure that he is happy, healthy, and well protected at all cost!!

I have a thing with characters who typically have something to hide physically, and when that something was briefly revealed, whether partially or full, even if it's just for a few milliseconds- you would want to see it again. In my case, that would usually drive me to dive deep into their character, making headcanons at the same time as means of developing their character even further (had the canon series didn't do so)- like you really want to get to know them better. It would really come to the point that I ended up feeling for them, that I'd forgot the initial goal of wanting to see the hidden physical attribute, since I've become so emotionally attached in a way.

It was even worse with Chiba since he's one of the main characters of my fic, TARGET ON- I'm literally going through an in-depth exploration of his character at every action I write him to make. And making him friends with Miki, who's the type to adjust well with everyone's interests because she is that open-minded, is the finishing blow.

Imagine when there is finally someone who doesn't really mind what you're interested in, especially if they like that certain interest and wanted to dive into it further- you, being the more knowledgeable in the field, couldn't help but to teach them, out of hope that they might ended up being as interested as you are. Without realizing it, you're opening up to said person by sharing your interests with them, even to the point of hanging out with them to know if there are any other interests you both shared and can bond over.

I pulled that with Chiba in the recent chapter, admittedly. It's one of those fic-verse little developments that made me feel for him emotionally as I carefully write him, to the point of being proud of him opening up to others even just a little, which could've also happened off-screen in canon as it is a realistic situation.

I don't really mind the amount of screen time and info we got of him canonically wise. It's enough for us to make certain headcanons so realistically that could've been canon if one didn't know better. And that made it really easier for me to write him in fics because that's how developed he is, headcanon-wise, and because that's how emotionally attached I am to him.

Like I just said in the beginning, I want him to be happy. I want him to be developed even more so than canon can provide to. Chiba's a good example of how TARGET ON is slowly becoming to be, from an OC-centered fic to a fic which goal is now to give proper development and insight of each character (while kind of using Miki as the starting point sometimes). In Chiba's case, Miki lightly knocked on his shell, and it's his choice whether to let her in or not, or go out and join her. Then it's up to his own will or the influeneces of the other kids he interacts with, to make the choice of opening up to others more.

And me writing all that development in a fic, with the separate goal of making him happy as I hope, is what is trapping me into this strong emotional bond of strings, making it impossible to break free of as I am that attached.

So yeah, he's my son that I just want to be happy, and I am gonna do that lol

Why did you choose your URL? I’ve been unforth everywhere since 1994 so it was kinda a no brainer? When I was first signing up for AOL back in the dial up dark ages, I wanted a Star Trek related username but everything I tried was taken. My mom suggested unforth...it was the name of the male dwarf fighter she played in D&D in the 70s...and now, almost 30 years later, here I still am...

How long have you been on Tumblr? I initially signed up as unforth in December, 2012. That account became unforth-ninawaters, and then was deleted about a month after the purge. I’ve been basically active continually since then, though I did take a year hiatus after the purge.

Do you have a queue tag? I used to use a queue on the unforth-ninawaters and my queue tag was q hoo hoo. Now I don’t bother with a queue...eh, whatevs.

Why did you start your blog in the first place? I started dating @ramblingandpie​ in November 2012, and she used Tumblr as one of her main things, and she kept showing me stuff, and it just seemed easier to make my own account. Then we kept dating. Then we got married. Then we had kids. And now here we are.

Why did you choose your icon/pfp? I’m a simple person with simple tastes; I just wanted Jeremy Renner to look fascinated by everything I say.
