Glass broke as she pushed you into a nearby stand. The vase Amelia had gifted you for your birthday now a broken mess on the floor with you in the middle. Your arm bled from a piece of the glass that logged itself into you. But you didn’t cry. You couldn’t cry. It would only make things worse. They hated when you cried. 

You tried to back away as they stalked towards you. You ignored the pieces of glass that were now lodging into your palms as you desperately scurried away. But they were faster. A hand reached out to grip your hair harshly. You could see their faces. The anger. All you had done was go out with Amelia to lunch. You just wanted to hang out with a friend. 

Their grip tightened and your face went flying towards the wall. Just before you hit it everything went black.

You wake up in a panic. The room is dark and quiet except for your ragged breathing. Your eyes scan the room desperately to reassure yourself that you're safe. The body beside you moves and your eyes fly over to them with a flinch. 

Amelia had been sleeping peacefully when she felt you sit up in bed. At first she thought nothing of it but then she heard how your breaths got quicker and quicker and could feel you shaking. She could tell immediately that it was a nightmare. You get them from time to time. Some always worse than the others.

Amelia reached out towards you slowly but backed off at the way you flinched and curled in on yourself. 

“Baby? You need to slow your breathing. Can you do that for me?” Her words were soft and slow so as to not startle you. The last thing she wanted to do was to cause you even more panic. Yours eyes found hers and slowly you reached out. Amelia took you into her arms as she held onto you. Your head pressed up against her chest where you could hear her heartbeat as her hands stroked your hair and back. 

You both stayed like that until your breathing calmed down enough and your tremors turned to just light shakes here and there. After a minute she pulled away a bit so she could look at you.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Her voice was quiet as she spoke giving you the option. Nodding you took a deep breath in.

“I had a dream. About them.” Amelia knew who you were talking about immediately. You didn’t have to say their name for her to know. She could see it in your face. In the way your eyes glistened with tears and fear. Her jaw clenched as she took you back into her arms. She hated them. Hated them for what they did to you. For how they made you feel. 

“They aren’t here. They will never hurt you again. You’re mine now and I promise to keep you safe. Noone will ever lay a hand on you again” You nodded against her not trusting yourself to speak without crying. You could hear the tremor in her voice. You knew it affected her. Hearing about your ex and knowing what they had done to you. Their name was never spoken. They were never mentioned. Not unless it was a night like tonight. 

Amelia laid on her back and pulled you down with her. Your face in the crook of her neck as her arms held you tightly and protectively. You wouldn’t be able to sleep for at least another hour but Amelia was content to just hold you in her arms. Where you would be safe.

“I love you. You're safe” She whispered it over and over again as she held you. It wouldn’t be the last time you dream of them. It wouldn’t be the last time their actions haunt you but she would make sure to help you through it. To show you what real love is. To keep you safe.
