Sugawara didn't know what he's supposed to feel right now. It's been a month since Oikawa last contact him and a few days since he realized his number was blocked. He was busy with university and exams before summer vacation that he didn't even realize it's been so long since him and Oikawa exchanged texts.
They've been dating since graduating high school, so a little more than a year, and they were fine and happy until this. Sugawara was sure his boyfriend was hiding something from him, as Oikawa could get a little dazed and lost in his own thoughts, but he thought he would come around and talk and not just.... disappear.
He didn't even know where his house was or who was part of his family, beside his little nephew being his little brother's kouhai at school. Oikawa wasn't part of any university, either, and all his friends were avoiding Sugawara.
He didn't know if he should despair, cry or get angry.
A knock on his door startled him out of his thoughts.
"Nii-san?" his little brother opened his bedroom's door with a worried expression.
"What is it?" Sugawara tried to smile, forcing his voice to not shake.
"I heard Takeru saying something today at school...." he looked unsure, almost afraid.
"Oikawa's nephew?" Sugawara ignored the crack in his voice.
With a sigh, his brother came closer, made a shoo movement with his hands so his big brother could open a space for him and laid down on the bed beside him.
"They were talking about volleyball and Takeru said... He said Oikawa-san is in Argentina to play with a local team there..."
There was a loud crack sound that bounced against his bedroom's walls and Sugawara realized it was his own heart.
"...Oh."
It was the first time his little brother saw him cry so openly and with such deep emotions.
(a long time later fate would let him meet one of Oikawa's friends and he would find out that all of them thought Oikawa had told him, only to realize Sugawara wasn't at the airport send-off)
(his sadness would, after that, evolve to anger and hatred)

hi, i saw that you’ve been sharing your thoughts on hq rarepairs! what do you think about oisuga?
mhmhmmhmmhmhmh 🤔
honestly one of my least favourite haikyuu ships. I actually really like IwaOiDaiSuga as a polyship, and Oisuga is always the weak link holding me back lol. BUT that being said I do see why people like them, so...
Suga, absolutely, buys Oikawa flowers. I dont think it's something anyone else had done for Oikawa, and he barely understands it, but after big games, or before dates, or on special days, birthdays, Suga shows up with a small boquet of flowers, or a single rose, and is very consistent. Oikawa unwittingly falls in love with this trait which is why it hurts so severely when he finds out that Suga will mercilessly stop doing this while they're fighting. It's like being stabbed in the gut when Suga shows up for their date without flowers and Oikawa KNOWS its because of XYZ fight from the weekend they havent made up for.
They definitely help calm each other down. Its counterintuitive to a lot of their friends, but they actually end up tempering each other's louder qualities, and can spend quite a while just curled up, legs tangled, reading books together.
Suga is OBSESSED with Oikawa's hair and won't shut up about it. "I cant believe this is your natural colour" "baby please get off my head."
Also Suga would absolutely BALL when Oikawa moved to Argentina. Like... just the most obscene sobbing mess making a scene. Not even funny.
Oikawa is the BEST gift giver for Suga specifically but this is nintey percent because he has no standards for himself and with straight up pay Asahi/Daichi/Kiyoko to find out what Suga wants. He refuses to not make his birthday/christmas exactly what he wants.
Providing you subscribe to a headcanon where Oikawa has money - he spoils the SHIT out of Suga. Like he himself is a bit of a diva, but he projects his entire diva energy onto this little boyfriend of is and insists Suga gets everything he wants. EVERYTHING. He's fully aware he's doing it. Its intentional. He wants Suga to know.
Overall Ratings:
For me, Personal Interest: 1/10
Concept/Potential: 6/10? I see the vision but I struggle to see the vision

if you would like to elaborate on oikawa getting rejected in silly ones, i'd love to hear it <3 that appeals to my interests as well hehe. i like making him a little pathetic
GOSH DO I!!!!
in addition to this post
talking about hinata rejecting oikawa bc he was so caught up in the thrill of this cool senpai both being in brazil and also becoming his friend he did not see that oikawa was flirting w him but bc he is Like That oikawa didn't realize he wasnt being flirted back with, hinata is just friendly and personable hsusjsjsksn
ALSO in my haikyuu book club this week was volume 2 and well, im also rewatching the anime w my bff and we watched the first few episodes of season 4 and after she went to bed i HAD to keep my hq brain going so i finished all the reading for this week ( sjebjsjs bad planning now i have to wait WAY longer to continue) BUT IT HAD OIKAWAS INTRO PAGE AND THIS!!!! IS HIS CURRENT CONCERN
Tumblr media
and this is just ajshakhs hes trying so hard not to be hurt ajsbshjsje i love him so much hes fine guys hes totally fine doesnt effect him at all he doesn't care do u believe him?? pls,,, please believe him,,,,
ALSO AISHAJS one of my favorite ways to enjoy oisuga is.... oikawa pining..... endlessly.... AND HES MAD ABOUT IT!!!! oahsjahs he tries so HARD to flirt with him but!!! he sucks at it!! so suga never catches on and he just thinks oikawa is kinda weird sisbjshe but like in a good way!! like "oh, hes just another volleyball idiot, and bc hes so handsome i wonder if he feels like he can't really be understood by many ppl! I wonder if he finds it difficult to make friends, he is really intense... woah, he really IS kageyamas senpai..." aishkajshshs
and oikawa is waiting for sugas answer to see if he wants to go to the movies w him or not and THEY DO GO but once again the vibe was not clarified and oikawa thought it was a date and suga thought they were friends hanging out ajabajjshs ACTUALLY maybe he DID say "great! its a date!" but suga thought he WAS JOKING JSHSJA
(this literally happened to me once ahsvsn we held hands even and at the end i was like... " so... wanna go on another date sometime?" and she was like "THIS WAS A DATE???" and im fine about it, its funny, but in the moment i did want to immolate, shrivel up, and die. being 17 and gay is hard, its hard and nobody understands.... except oikawa bc this is canon to me now!!)
i just, man i love this stupid pretty boy, iwa ALSO delights, just a lil bit, in getting all the stories that oikawa complains about, bc it sucks, and he cares about his best friends feelings but also its sooooo funny

MISO SENPAI. MISO SENPAI. MIIIIISOOOOO SENPAI!!!!! ( ˘ ³˘)❤ THIS IS NOT WHO YOU THINK IT IS. OKAY, THAT'S A FUCKING LIE. IT'S WHO YOU THINK IT IS. I SAW THAT CHRISTMAS OTP PROMPT THINGY, AND LIKE - I'D LOVE TO SEE WHAT IT WOULD BE LIKE SPEND CHRISTMAS WITH OISUGA. 👀 PLEASE, AND SANK YOU.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Gosh, senpai, who are you calling senpai?! Clearly, I am the kouhai between the two of us. 😘 I am SHO SHO SHO SHO SHOOOO HAPPY that you have come to my ask again. ;AAAAA; It has been so long. I know I’ve been gone from tumblr for more than a few months, been back for like two, but only now do I truly feel like I’m back in tumblr. Now that you have returned to my inbox. 😍 You know how it is. I am only truly home with you. (/o\)
ANYWAY (/o\) IM SUPER HAPPY YOU SENT THESE TWO. ;AAAAA; I’ve missed them dearly!!!! Let’s see what I can come up with, hmm?
Christmas OTP Questions: oisuga
Who wakes the other up excitedly on Christmas morning? Which one begs for five more minutes of sleep? I imagine they’re both the types to sleep in, cuddling each other because of how cold it is. (That year, Oikawa’s heater is broken again? But the following year, Suga should have successfully convinced Oikawa to move in with him. (/o\)) They both sleep in, but when Oikawa opens his eyes and realizes it’s Christmas, he’d immediately perk up and start pestering Suga. “Kou-chan, Kou-chan, it’s Christmas. KOU-CHAN WAKE UP IT’S CHRISTMAS.” Suga would smack him in the face and demand more sleep. LOLOne Christmas, Oikawa wakes up to the smell of something sweet in the air. Turns out Suga-chan surprised him and baked their Christmas cake that year!!! Super cute and sweet. 😍
Which one hangs the mistletoe? Oikawa. Rather than hanging it around his place, because he knows Suga would avoid stepping through them on purpose, he keeps one in his pocket and lifts it up over him and his boyfriend so he can kiss him. XD One time, Suga hangs a mistle toe over Oikawa’s bedroom, which he takes weeks to notice??? Oikawa is a silly fool. Suga makes fun of him, then makes out with him under the mistletoe, and then guides his boyfriend to bed. (/o\)
Which one cooks? Do they cook together? Do they go out to eat? The first Christmas they spent together, to add to the chicken + cake combo that they get from the store, Suga made some nabe, and doesn’t realize immediately that it’s one of the first meals Oikawa doesn’t yap on about having nabe with “Iwa-chan” years before. HAPPY VIBES. \0/When they start working, it’s Oikawa that treats Suga to some fancy chocolate Christmas cake that he had to be in line for a little over an hour to get. (He took time off work just for that!!!) It’s the year Suga realizes how big a space he occupies in Oikawa’s heart, and just falls deeper. (/o\)
Which one can’t sleep the night before? It’s not that they can’t sleep, but they stay out as late as they can on the 24th, walking through various illuminations set up across the city. Tokyo is really grand about illuminations, 20x 30x more so than Sendai. It’s amazing how the city just– shines. They once stayed for an hour staring at the moving illuminations at Roppongi, sipping on their limited edition Christmas-themed coffee.
Which one dresses like they’re straight out of a Christmas movie? I’d say none of them. They’re not too hyped up about the holiday for that. XD
Which one sings Christmas carols loudly and off-key at random times? SUGA. Which surprises Oikawa because he normally has such a lovely singing voice, but for Christmas carols he’s just– He can’t sing them. He just cannot. Oikawa makes fun of him and, of course, gets punched on the arm by Suga for it. No dinner for him that night? But ofc he doesn’t learn his lesson and keeps teasing Suga anyway. XD
Which one tears open their packages? Which one slowly, methodically unwraps every single one? Suga methodically unwraps his presents, up to a certain point. Like, when he gets through 75% he just goes ‘OH WHATEVER’ and tears it apart. Oikawa tears his presents from the start.
Who opens their biggest gift first? Who opens their smallest gift first? Suga opens his presents according to how important to him the giver is. He starts from general gifts he gets from classmates and such. Then his ex-clubmates’. Daichi’s. Saves Oikawa’s for last.Oikawa starts from the biggest gift, and kind of gets too distracted about the amazingness of such big gifts that Suga has to remind him there are other presents to open.“Hey, Tooru, remember there’re more here.”“Yes, but LOOK at this sweater, Kou-chan. You think it fits me?”“-roll eye- You look great. Now, here. I think this one’s from your mom?”“KOU-CHAN, I wore it. Tell me I’m handsome.”“(blankly) Wow, you’re handsome now open this one.”“Let me get my camera.”“TOORU.”Which is why Suga doesn’t bring out his gift until everything else has been opened, else Oikawa may just forget about it. XD
Which one makes the sappy Christmas speech? Rather than a speech, it’s just a moment they look at each other, no words needed. One emotional “Merry Christmas.”
Which one’s family do they spend Christmas Day with? Does the whole family get together, or is it just your OTP, and any kids they have? They rarely ever go back to Sendai on Christmas, since spending it just the two of them is enough. When they do, they spend the Eve at Suga’s and Christmas day at Oikawa’s. Suga gets so flustered when Oikawa’s mom keeps commenting that he’s so pretty. But when Oikawa’s all “Ikr, mom? I’ve got such a good eye.” Oikawa gets kicked in the shin when no one’s looking. Also, they each totally make sure they do it in each other’s beds. Burning away the bed’s memories of past lovers, maybe? :P (YAY ANGST but not so angst)
Which one buys a gift for their pet? They have a pet fish once, which Oikawa gets so attached to, and regularly feeds. When it dies, he was inconsolable.
Who dreams of a white Christmas? Suga. He’s used to it snowing in Sendai, and gets disappointed it didn’t snow the first year he was in Tokyo. He hopes and hopes and hopes to spend Christmas in the snow with Oikawa, but it just hasn’t happened yet.
Which one munches on candy until lunch time? I’d say both of them. Oikawa starts, and Suga has to tell him to stop eating because he’ll lose his appetite. In the end, he joins in and they have a fun time eating sweets.
Which one goes to bed first that day? Which one stays up, being nostalgic? Suga sleeps first, tried from all the activities of the day, and Oikawa watches him sleep, thinking about how lucky he’d been to find someone who sticks with him no matter how annoying he gets.
Which one is ready to start de-decorating on the 26th? Which one wants to keep stuff up until after January? Well, it’s typical in Japan to take down Christmas decors by the 26th to start preparing for the new year, which is the grander holiday for them. They don’t have much decor up in the first place, but it’s Oikawa that complains and says, “Let’s just take them down next year” bec he’s too lazy. XD Poor Suga will have to trick him into helping him take down and keep their decors.
Thank you thank you thank you for sending these two !!!!!!!!! It was soooo sos o much fun thinking of these. ;AAAAA; Thank you. I LOVE U SO MUUUCH

Whispers and rumors, the three of you have heard too many of them. All eyes on the three of you and all ears on what is spoken between you three. This whole thing was a shock to everyone that have heard of it. To think that the Captain of Seijoh, Oikawa Tooru, a lady’s man and a flirt would settle down. And with two people nonetheless. One was the vice-captain and extra setter for Karasuno, Sugawara Koushi and the other was the Shiritorizawa’s manager, you. What is even more surprising is how balanced and well communicated the relationship was. A lot of people were at least envious of one of the three. Seemingly as either of the three had scored a very pretty and well-versed lover.
The three of you are rivals in court. Shiritorizawa, Karasuno, and Seijoh, competing to go to nationals. But nevertheless, you can find love in the strangest of places. With the three of you meeting in the battle field, it’s quite romantic. With every calculated move of their opponent, it ended up with a love potion that had struck the three of you. It started with you and Oikawa then Sugawara came into the picture just a few moments after. It was an unsuspected turn yet it was welcomed by the three of you.
“Tooru, you know that both of you can’t enter my school right?” You started. You and your lovers are in a café, having a small date after a week’s torture. “Yes, I know! But still, maybe you could book us a prac-“Oikawa was about to respond but he got hit by the other setter. He pouted and rubbed his side where Suga had hit him. “That hurt you know!” The brunette then said. “Babe, we aren’t here to talk about volleyball. I know we both said you look cute when talking about it but it’s been 2 weeks since we last saw each other,” Sugawara started as he kissed Oikawa’s cheek and held your hand. “Koushi’s right you know~” You agreed with a hum. “I’m sorry, you both are right but you still didn’t have to hit me so hard, sugar!” Oikawa said. “Today is my treat, I brought my wallet this time!” He then attempted to change the subject.
“Oh? That’s a change~” Sugawara teased. And suddenly, the small talk turned into something that is meaningful. The topic didn’t really matter. Whether it was the stressful 2 weeks of loneliness Oikawa felt when he didn’t see his lovers. Or it may be Suga’s grumbling about school. Or perhaps it maybe how stressful your week has been. Either way, the other two would listen fondly. It was obvious that the three of you love each other very much. Who else could drag Oikawa away from his mind space with a single touch? Who else could drive away your stress with a mere hug? And who else could make Sugawara smile so fondly?
This relationship might seem strange to others. But people still can’t help but get envious. Like the one’s in the café currently. As you and your lovers laughed and enjoyed each other, some would whisper and look with envy. Oikawa’s gaze was so soft, contrary to the looks he would give on court. It was clear that with the two of you, Oikawa was such a different person. His pettiness and competitiveness lessened. His flirtatious and teasing nature seemed too dimmed. Giving light to a much wholesome and soft version of himself. No one knew that Oikawa could be such a dork but here he is cracking bad jokes in attempt to make the both of you laugh.
And of course it wasn’t only obvious with Oikawa. Contrary to his fiery nature with the team, Sugawara seemed more at peace instead of looking stress all the time. It’s like the two of you triggers the tranquility in him. His voice is soft and gentle whenever he speaks with you. And the way his touch feel like feathers on your skin. He’s merely teasing yet it makes you both crave for more. It’s as if him and Oikawa switched personalities in a way. Sugawara seemed more of a tease and the flirt between you three. Nonetheless, the look in his eyes whenever you both are in the conversation or when you are right in front of him says it all.

Haikyuu!! Top 5 Ships: Oikawa
** SOUTH AMERICAN SPOILERS BELOW **
Tumblr media
Haikyuu!! is wonderful, in part because unlike other series, the sky’s the limit on how many ships can set sail and be embraced by the fandom. I wanted to go through some of my favorite characters from the series and my Top 5 favorite ships for them!
Of course, we have to start with my favorite “Trash King”: Toru Oikawa!
5. Kuroo x Oikawa
Tumblr media
The rarest of the pairs in this post, but I find it hilarious that despite these two never sharing a panel of screen time together, Furudate loves to constantly sketch these two characters together.
Personality-wise, these two actually have a lot in common. Kuroo gives off that “con man” vibe in Chapter 401 to those around him, and Oikawa is constantly being described as putting on a “fake persona” in public by Iwaizumi. But, both former captains have the respect of their team and are great leaders.
These two together would be like two gossipy high school drama queens sent on a trip to the shopping mall together. Both physically exude that “sexy, too-hot-to-handle” persona, but in reality are a pair of nerds obsessing over aliens and docosahexaenoic acid. Maybe it would’ve been too much for the universe to handle had they shared a scene in the series together. At least we have Furudate’s sketches...
Tumblr media
4. Ushijima x Oikawa
Tumblr media
Okay, so I’ll be honest. I was not originally a fan of this pairing -- I mean, Ushijima’s practically Oikawa’s biggest rival outside of Kageyama, so how could anyone picture them romantically involved?
Well, then I read this fan fiction, and I realized that there could be something there. Unlike Oikawa’s dislike/rivalry with Kageyama, that basically stems from his jealousy and insecurity that his kouhai will succeed him as the better setter, Oikawa’s main rivalry with Ushijima is just beating him in a match. Sure, Ushijima aggravates Oikawa in the series by labeling his pride as “worthless,” but we all know how our Grand King comes back to make Ushijima eat those words later on, don’t we?
I think there’s an aspect of this ship that is similar to the Iwaoi pairing -- in that Ushijima’s stoic, genuine, and grounded personality is polar opposite Oikawa’s calculating, put-on, and often petty persona. Ushijima is basically the antithesis of Oikawa in the series, but as a ship, his quiet reserve opens up a lot of avenues for Oikawa to be himself and -- fan fiction-wise -- have a platform to open up and monologue his way through personal growth. It’s not my favorite ship for Oikawa, but after reading the linked fan fiction, I can see the appeal.
Tumblr media
3. Sugawara x Oikawa
Tumblr media
Okay, so this ship is just fun. There’s such a creative fandom with OiSuga, whether it’s them as Slytherin wizards in a Hogwarts AU, or as college roommates, or pretty much any scenario, there is so much creativity with this pairing, partially because of just how intriguing a concept this ship is!
I think the draw of this pairing is how different it is from the more popular Oikawa ships, like Iwaoi. Sugawara is a “team mom” kind of like Iwaizumi, but Suga’s personality couldn’t be more different than Iwaizumi’s. Sugawara has a fiercely supportive stance as a teammate, but he’s also a setter, and a calculating/manipulative one at that -- much like Oikawa. It’s canon that Oikawa nicknames him “Mr. Refreshing,” because he’s so different from Kageyama in terms of communicating and reading his team -- similarly to Oikawa, it could be noted. And you have two pretty setter squad members who are easy on the eyes, but have much more going on under the surface in terms of insecurities, pride, and goals as third years.
And you wouldn’t think that Oikawa would work paired with another setter, but since Sugawara isn’t a “Kageyama-level prodigy,” it gives Oikawa the ability to be the better player on the court, so his pride isn’t hurt, but leaves Sugawara available as the more emotionally stable, “cool” partner. Plus, the two can share their own insecurities about being “replaced” by Kageyama as the better setter, but Sugawara can shut down any trash talk by Oikawa if it gets too overbearing.
Basically, you have two characters who are more similar than they appear, but still have enough differences to be an interesting duo. It’s like if a sour patch kid and a candy apple hooked up. I’ll let you decide which is which.
Tumblr media
2. Hinata x Oikawa
Tumblr media
So...Furudate has laid the groundwork for this ship since the first time Hinata spiked that ball past “The Great King,” but it wasn’t until the Rio mini arc that we really got this ship to come into its own. Hence why I put a spoiler tag on this post, for you anime-only’s who haven’t been blessed with the greatness that is the Rio Arc.
Of any pairing in Haikyuu!! One could argue Hinata and Oikawa have done the most “shippy” things, with the exception of #1 below. I mean, they’ve:
* Taken the most epic, beautiful selfie together and sent to their exes rivals * Went on multiple dinner dates together (during the day and at night) * Are on a literal first-name basis  * Played two-on-two beach volleyball together (multiple times) * HUGGED ON LIVE TV DURING THE OLYMPICS
I’ve wanted to post more on this, but Oikawa and Hinata actually have a lot in common, besides being Kageyama’s rival. They’re both naturally athletic, though definitely not “geniuses” or “prodigies” like Kageyama or Hoshiumi. They’re just two individuals who literally live and breathe volleyball and try to push themselves to their limits at being the best they can be. And their dynamic works really well -- Oikawa may be petty and snarky, but Hinata takes it all in stride and is a literal walking ball of unphased sunshine. Oikawa would probably think he has the upper hand in the relationship; at least, until Hinata speaks up and shows he’s not quite as naive as he appears. He’s just literally that optimistic/nice. One can definitely see the appeal of shipping these two similar-but-different characters.
While some ship it as just a “fling in Rio,” and some ship it more as a fantastically developed friendship -- I mean, Hinata went on to play for Brazil, so you KNOW those two kept playing each other in matches and at training camps -- it’s still become one of the most unexpected, yet welcomed Oikawa pairing!
Tumblr media
1. Iwaizumi x Oikawa
Tumblr media
Okay, so this shouldn’t surprise anyone. But yeah, Iwaizumi and Oikawa have been paired up since the start of this series, and for good reason.
There is so much to like about the pairing: The childhood friend aspect; the Setter/Spiker dynamic Haikyuu!! is so infamous for; how Iwaizumi takes none of Oikawa’s dramatic self and pushes past the “bs” to make sure Oikawa takes care of himself; how Oikawa teases Iwaizumi, yet is always by his side; how the two are so in sync, despite their different personalities; godzilla vs aliens...
...but I think I love best how they, similar to Hinata and Kageyama, are rivals who pursued their dreams: Oikawa making it to the Olympics on the team of his idol and mentor, and Iwaizumi as an Athletic Trainer on the team of his idol and mentor’s son. It’s so poetic, and I love in the final chapter that they finally get to face each other...even if it’s not “technically” against each other in a game.
This ship is probably one of the most iconic in Haikyuu!! and it’s hard to say anything that hasn’t already been stated, but I love it. There’s a reason it works so well, and Furudate has blessed us with all the hints and crumbles of canon for us fans to work with. Again, the greatest gift Haikyuu!! has given us is the fact that we can ship so many different characters together, and it all for the most part fits. ^^

Part 2 Faking Dating AU rec list!!! @koushisawamura09
10 things I hate about you iwaoi au. It's good stuff.
If I have to read another iwaoi where my heart clenches and my whole chest aches... THEN I WILL. FIGHT ME. (srsly tho. so good, gots the matsuhana to round out the soulmates of aoba johsai)
I hate how much I enjoyed this Tsukkiyama because it was ridiculous and I absolutely adored Ennoshita the whole time.
The art of this is awesome. But Daisuga at a party... wonderful. Suga is a menace.
Iwaoi, Oikawa confesses and Iwa-chan has to use his own brain cell to think. It's... what dreams are made of. This fic is amazing.
AtsuHina. This one hurts. This one hits hard and deep and it hurts. Worth every moment.
Iwaoi. Oikawa is not a good person. But it's okay, Iwa will love him enough for the both of them.
Based on a movie, Tsukiyama with some side YamaYama [cause that's the most cursed pairing I've ever heard of and I love it so much.] This one is cute.
TsukiHina, absolutely ridiculous, super cute though cause Tsukki apparently loses his brain cells when he's around Hinata.
Oikawa's sister reminds him that he said he had a boyfriend so he decides to bring home someone to appease the family. And it would have worked too, if Iwa had been at school like he said he would be.
God this Iwaoi with some cute OiSuga that is just... I read this one a lot.

brainfart 1 - oisuga
oikawa meets suga after he comes home from japan. despite the uncertainty of their relationship, they could not help but fall deeper and deeper into each other.
I’m not sure if I’m ready to commit to a multi-chaptered fic just yet. The last time I wrote one was 2011 LMAO.
Hence, I’ll just type out an outline I’ve been wanting to work on for a while, now. Will I get to it? Maybe, maybe not. But dang, I want this to come to life so bad.
I kind of have the start down, but the in-betweens: not so much.
Sooooo if ya wanna see the outline, read away!
Setting: Winter 2022 (starts December), Tokyo + Miyagi
Oikawa: 28, still part of the Argentinian National Team
Sugawara: 28, teaches elementary students at a school in Sendai
[1]
Nearing Christmas, Oikawa was sent on a forced break after injuring his knee in a game.
While his knee managed to heal, he overworked himself to the bone-his knee injury being the breaking point, Coach Blanco insisted that he needed this in order to come back a stronger player.
Oikawa decided to fly home to Japan. He decided to stay in a hotel in Tokyo for a brief period, enjoying the city’s bustling yuletide season.
One Friday night, while walking down the streets, he bumps into Sugawara. Suga mentions that he was just about to buy a drink and invites Oikawa.
They catch up, flirt, drink glasses of beer as the night draws to a close.
They touch upon Daichi getting married soon, and Iwaizumi settling down with a girlfriend, and kind of relish in heartbreak.
Suga mentions he was in Tokyo since he headed straight here as soon as he was able to leave the school, since he was incredibly stressed.
Oikawa takes Suga back to his hotel and they spend the night there (yes, they do).
Suga rises up early to head back to Sendai, since he has to grade some papers back in the school, despite it being a Saturday.
When it was sundown, Suga was surprised to see Oikawa waiting for him by the school gate. He pulls Suga and manages to drag him into Seijoh, sneaking in. Oikawa admits the small crush he had on Suga, while Suga returns the confession.
[2]
Here’s the muddy in-between lol
Suga & Oikawa meet up time to time, whether it was for a date or for a hookup. They never put a label.
Though they don’t live together, Oikawa stays at Suga’s apartment for long periods of time.
Oikawa helps coach Lil Tykes Volleyball Classroom again.
Suga receives an invitation to Daichi and Michimiya’s wedding, sending him to tears once more. Thankfully, Oikawa is there to help him through. Oikawa says ‘I love you,’ but Sugawara doesn’t say it back.
They grow more and more attached to each other, scaring Suga - he can’t go back to Argentina with Tooru (yes, first name basis now!!), and he doesn’t want to make him stay in Japan for him.
Oikawa knows this is a dead end, since he can’t make Koushi (!!!!!) stop teaching, since it’s his passion.
Long distance relationship is out of the question, since they’re not even in a relationship in the first place!!
One morning: “I want to be selfish, Tooru. I want to want you to stay.” Suga cries. “But I can’t bring myself to. Ever.”
Daichi sends the invitation to the wedding. Suga informs him to reserve a seat for 1.
Suga arrives alone at the wedding. He was happy for Daichi, but he was torn: he misses Oikawa, but is also glad that he decided not to bring him along, since bringing a plus 1 to a wedding means serious things.
To his surprise, Oikawa shows up (he contacted Daichi secretly). Suga is happy, and they dance together.
They continue to go out, being more and more attached to each other as the months pass by, but they don’t put a label on anything.
Oikawa and Suga finally tries to define “the relationship” - there is none. There doesn’t have to be any, since they know it won’t work out. Oikawa gets ready to go back to playing volleyball. They promise not to wait for each other, to move on. They’ll try to keep in touch.
The two agree to not see each other off when Oikawa leaves. They say their final goodbyes at Koushi’s doorstep.
Oikawa takes one last look before entering the departure area, hoping to find Suga, feeling a pain in his chest when he doesn’t.
Oikawa enters the departure area, just as Suga arrives outside, panting, but Oikawa was no where to be seen. He was too late.
[3]
Lots of time skips.
Suga and Oikawa try to keep in touch with their social media, but this dwindles as their schedules get busier.
Oikawa never settles down, but continues to hook up with different people. While he wasn’t trying to fill a void and simply enjoys the company, he keeps going back to Suga, wanting to see him, to feel him once again, and again, and again.
Though they don’t talk anymore, Oikawa constantly checks Suga’s Facebook, even liking some photos as he passes by them.
Suga tries to settle down. He eventually finds himself a girlfriend, whom he loves very much. They decided to marry, and they do. He looks at their wedding photo on his social media, staring long and hard at the notification: Liked By Tooru Oikawa
After three years of marriage, Suga’s wife files a divorce. Although Suga tried to fight for their marriage, his wife points out that she knows: she knows there’s someone else in his heart. She knows he’s never gotten over him. She knows.
“And it’s okay.” She says. “I know you still love him.”
Suga’s (now ex-) wife tells him she understands admits that she still loves her best friend and wants to be with her.
His wife argues that they only married for the sake of tradition which hurts Suga, since he does still love his wife, but comes to terms with what was really missing - Oikawa. He eventually signs the papers, and divorce peacefully.
“I hope you’ll be happy someday, Koushi.” She says before bidding goodbye. “With Tooru.”
Oikawa notices the lack of updates from Suga - he probably lives a quiet life, now. Is his wife beautiful? I hope she’s kind to him. I wonder if they have kids. They’ll probably be as beautiful as Koushi.
It’s what he deserves.
[4]
Year 2037. Coach Jose Blanco passes away, and Oikawa is devastated and, for the first time in a while, unsure.Maybe he should coach. Maybe he should stop playing volleyball and live a normal life. Then, he decides that he needs another reset. Boarding the plane, he posts a photo on his social media: Going back home.
Suga's in the break room when he sees Oikawa’s post. He’s teaching high school now, and is the adviser and co-coach for the school’s volleyball club. He quickly scrambles, asking one of the teachers to substitute for him - it’s an emergency, he says. He hops onto a cab and heads to Sendai Airport, heart racing. I don’t even know what his exact arrival time is. What if it’s not in Sendai Airport? What if he comes home with a family? Would he even be glad to see me?
He gets off the cab and nervously waits on a bench across the entrance. Suga keeps checking Oikawa’s social media for updates, but there was none. Why can’t I message him?
Hours pass by and it’s already 10 in the evening when the next flock of people come out. Suga keeps his eyes peeled, and then - there he is.
Oikawa comes into the clearing, looking around. There’s no one with him, but Suga’s heart drops. He runs to Oikawa, tears threatening to spill.
“Koushi? What -”
Without shame, a crying Suga kisses Oikawa. After recovering from his shock, he returns the kiss, a sigh of relief leaving Suga’s lips.
After the kiss, they stand in each others arms, panting.
O: “What are you doing here?”  S: “Waiting for you you idiot - wait, you’re not married, are you? Oh my god, what have I done -” O: “I’m not, but you... You’re married, right?” S: [smiles and shows his bare left hand] “I’m not.”
Oikawa laughs, feeling all his emotions bubble out all at once. He spends the night at Suga’s once more, relishing in his lover’s arms, happy.
O: “I still don’t know what’ll happen from now on.” S: “We’ll make it work.” O: “I don’t know if I’m staying in Japan.” S: “We’ll make it work.” O: “Are you sure? I can’t take you away from what you love, Koushi. What if I decide to go back to Argentina -” S: “We’ll make it work.”
Suga holds Oikawa in a loving embrace, and Oikawa sighs at the warmth. Suga looks him in the eyes with reassurance and determination. “Besides...”
“It’s you, Tooru...” Suga plants a kiss on Oikawa’s forehead. “You’re the one I love.”
x

thoughts on iwaoisuga? superhero captains au or band au (like i remember you saying this was more oisuga, but iwa-chan must still be there somewhere right? haha)
i'll do both!!
superhero captains au:
so, i already talked about iwaoi being exes in the au so i'm gonna ramble on about what suga has going on with the two of them.
iwasuga - friends! i'm not sold on how they end up meeting (my first thought was neighbors but now im leaning towards maybe they had a class together or something in college) but they get closer after the iwaoi breakup. there's a month or so where iwa is distancing himself from oikawa and their other friends because it hurts too much to be around him so he ends up spending more time with suga.
iwa confides in suga about everything going on with oikawa, the things he doesn't really feel comfortable discussing with makki or mattsun because they're also friends with oikawa. suga also talks to him a little about daichi acting weird.
suga also drags iwa out places to have fun and serve as a distraction bc he doesn't think sitting around wallowing in his apartment is doing iwa any good.
they Probably start dating first? (or. second i guess technically) or get close to it before oikawa gets pulled in too.
oisuga - suga and "sōzu" (oikawa) meet and start up a friendship. suga becomes a confidant of sorts to oikawa. oikawa keeps it vague but he talks to suga about iwa and the break up and why he did it. suga is a good listener and supportive but is also Gently throwing in hints that he disagrees with why oikawa did it.
they become close but not... too close. there is this barrier there. they're both holding things back, oikawa because he's not trying to give away his secret identity, suga because he doesn't feel like he actually knows him.
at some point, i want suga to meet regular oikawa through iwaizumi which ofc causes oikawa to panic majorly. (maybe this is when oikawa learns that suga and iwa actually know each other and is like ⁉️⁉️) but i haven't thought too much about this.
band au: iirc, iwa's role in the band au is just as oikawa's supportive best friend. i don't think i ever got far enough in the planning stage to fully sort it out. i imagine he's pushing oikawa to temporarily join the band and calling him an idiot when oikawa denies having feelings for suga.
i have a lot of iwaoisuga aus that started out as just oisuga but this is actually one that never grew to include iwa too (romantically) haha.

You said about wanting a main verse partner for Oikawa, who do you personally want it to be?
OH gosh that’s actually really hard. As one hand I love the idea of being with someone who plays professional volleyball and going to their games etc; BUT that would definitely take a toll on his mental health a lot. I feel Bokuto is one person that he’d actually be okay with and it would hurt him as much, it’s the same with Kuroo as I do personally lean more towards Oikuroo when it comes to his default verse as I also see Oikuroo as that type of couple that can face the world no matter what and also come out on top.
Really tho, I really like the idea of him being with someone who’s not in the world of volleyball anymore, yeah they go see friends play. But outside of that they just don’t have that fixation on the sport, I’m very bias towards him with Suga as Oisuga is very special to me and I think Tooru would always be smitten by him. You also have the likes of Noya as I do like the idea of Oiks thinking to hell with it I’m travelling with him— that could be super cute. Osmau is another I see working well, as they have that right balance and I think with Osamu growing up with Atsumu he’s definitely more likely to understand Tooru’s shift in moods, as I feel Atsumu and Tooru are somewhat the samey in how they deal with being upset. Ofc I’m also big bias to Matsu, but Matsuoi is my OTP for Oikawa so 🤷‍♀️
I hope that helped, really even if I didn’t list a character, I can see Tooru working well with most characters if I’m being completely honest with you.

oikawa for the ask game!!
how i feel about this character: i love him so much?? he definitely fits the type of character i always adore, and all the angst surrounding him and volleyball and facades hurts my heart, i just want him to be happy and healthy please and thanks
all the people i ship romantically with this character: mainly iwaizumi, but i’m always down for oisuga and oikuro (and really any mix of the third years tbh)
my non-romantic OTP for this character: hmm idk?? i adore his friendship with iwaizumi too, if that’s what this is going for
oh also oikawa/happiness
my unpopular opinion about this character: uhhhhh i don’t know that i have any?? he’s a dork but that’s not unpopular as far as i know
one thing i wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon: his knee not being destroyed?? also i’d always love more interactions outside of volleyball, just him hanging out with his friends and having a good time
my OTP: iwaoi all the way, they own my whole ass
my crossover ship: i don’t have one so i’m gonna make one up...... oikawa/mikorin, what a disaster that would be
a headcanon fact: i’m super fond of oikawa “playboy” tooru being an absolute mess when he tries to flirt with someone he actually likes
send me a ship, character, or list of 5 characters!!

Thank you to everyone who sent in requests!
The 100 followers even is now shut. now it’s voting time. To vote just send an ask stating its for the even and a number. I’ll close it in a week and announce the winner then
Daisuga - home: Suga believes that home is where the heart is, and his heart lies with Daichi. It always has, so when Daichi gets a scholarship to attend a university overseas it’s hard to deal with. He travels to the other country to be with Daichi. It’s a very fluffy one
Ojiro and “I forgot my name again”:  Ojiro got quite injured while fighting a particularly hard villian, as a result he has a bit of a memory issue. It gets better over time but he’s still struggling a bit, some nights he can’t even remember his own name. His s/o is always there to help him though, they’ll gently remind him of all the things he forgets and tries their best to stay strong no matter how hard it gets or how much it breaks their heart to see him this way.
Oikawa - injury: I’d write about older Oikawa, his daughter has just come home from school after her volleyball tryouts and said that she was accepted as her teams setter. I’ll be a non linear story going between him witnesses his daughter’s volleyball firsts and his memories of his own firsts to show a parallel. He only realises she parallels him a little too much when she first injures herself, it’s only a minor injury but he makes sure she takes breaks and teaches her the best he can.
Oisuga - injury: Oikawa lands badly during their game with Karasuno, everyone knows it was a bad fall from the way he fell and the noise he made. The game was paused and his team rushed to him, Oikawa told them to keep playing and beat Karasuno and that he’d be back before they knew it, although no one believed this. Suga offered to help him to the first aid room, he felt bad that he’d hurt himself and wanted to help the best he could. Oikawa is initially rather cold and hostile towards him but Suga isn’t really phased, he gets him drinks and snacks and just keeps him company and lends a shoulder when Oikawa drops the stubborn act and cries
Monoma and open door: The first thing that came to mind was Frozen’s “Love is an open door”Monoma is an absolute closeted Disney fanatic, he’s seen Every. Single. Disney movie in existence, he got so excited when he heard that Frozen 2 was coming out, he did not care that people called it overrated. No one else knew he loved Disney so much until his s/o admitted they’d only ever seen bits and pieces of movies, he blows his cover immediately. That weekend he sets up a huge pillow fort and grabs a bunch of snacks and tissues and he and his s/o binge watch all of the Disney movies, he sings along to all the songs and even quotes some of his favourite movies
"I don't care what Pidge tells you, Altean ears are not that sensiti- kyaa! B-but please s-stop touching them." Allura: I’d write about Allura’s s/o came up and touching her ears during an important meeting, Allura is heavily affected by it. She tried to keep cool but s/o teases her throughout the whole meeting, Allura drags them into her room when it’s done

Convince Me (part 7)
OiSuga Week Day 7 - nightmares / free prompt
When Oikawa suddenly appears at Karasuno after school to ask Sugawara out, the latter has one condition: Oikawa has to convince him of the sincerity of his feelings.
(Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6)
Read on AO3 or down below
When Sakusa Kiyoomi’s name flashes up on his phone, Sugawara feels an immediate uneasiness settling in his stomach. To receive a phone call from the former ace of Itachiyama, one of the three top aces in their school years, would be an honor, if not for the fact that Sakusa Kiyoomi does not simply make phone calls – as phone calls imply close contact with phones, and phones, as everyone knows, are dirty. For the germophobe like Sakusa, this must count a desperate measure.
And it makes Sugawara worry – because out of the members of the pro team Oikawa joined, Sakusa was the one Sugawara spoke with the least.
“Hello?” Sugawara takes the phone, halfway already standing from his chair.
“Sugawara-san,” comes the quiet voice of the wing spiker. “I think you should come.”
“Where?”
“Tokyo Metropolitan Hospital.”
 ///
“If you want to say I said so, don’t,” Oikawa says instead of a greeting when Sugawara arrives to the hospital half an hour later.
Sitting on a bed in one of the examination rooms, Oikawa’s still wearing his volleyball uniform. His right knee, freed from the knee supporter and swelled to twice its size, twists in an uncomfortable angle.
Sugawara wants to say ‘I said so’ more than ever – more than on the sleepless nights, he spent turning in their empty bed, waiting for Oikawa to stop re-watching his matches over and over again, until he has analyzed the last millisecond of it, more than on the sloppy mornings that found him all alone in bed, Oikawa already running restless               rounds around the park near their apartment block. It was Sugawara’s eternal struggle, his tilting at windmills that never came to fruition. He has gotten tired of it.
Just as he was unable to ever grow muscles like Iwaizumi, he was unable to get the better of Oikawa and stop him in his self-destructive pursuit of a dream.
Maybe, Sugawara thinks to himself cynically, if only he could grow those buff muscles, he could have beat some sense into Oikawa. Maybe the approach of silent caring and soft grumbling was not the right one.
Maybe it’s all his fault, for Oikawa to tear a tendon like that. Maybe it’s the sick joke of the universe, wouldn’t be the first one.
Maybe he should say ‘I said so.’
“Congratulations, you overworked yourself,” Sugawara says instead.
“I did,” Oikawa hisses in reply, eyes darkening ever so slightly. “You happy?”
Sugawara sends him a disappointed look. Shrugging, he lifts his eyes, silently motioning towards Oikawa’s teammates to leave.
They don’t need much of encouragement. Sakusa’s already trembling just from the thought of being in a hospital with sick people around while Terushima seems to be suffocating on the tension in the room. So when Sugawara glances over them, and Yaku starts herding them out towards the park, they all line up by the door without a word of resistance.
The doctor out, looking for the timetable to schedule Oikawa’s surgery, and Oikawa’s teammates slowly leaving, silence falls onto the room. Sugawara waits until there’s no one else in the examination room before he proceeds to walk to the bed and sit beside Oikawa.
They sit an inch apart, with Oikawa’s injured leg laying between them like a barrier. Oikawa rests his hand on his thigh, toned and clad in short volleyball shorts, pressing down on his muscles whenever pain kicks in. Sugawara follows it with his eyes, fingers flexing, relaxing, trembling ever so slightly. He rests his own hand atop his own thigh, pale skin in stark contrast with his dark jeans.
The silence eats the sounds of the hospital on the other side of the door, muffling them into an undecipherable mess of white noise. The only distinct sound in the room is the muted ticking of the wall clock, growing onto them in the silence, becoming louder and louder, harsher and harsher in Sugawara’s ears.
The silence rises between them as if it had a physical body, separating and distancing them with every passing second.
Oikawa avoids Sugawara’s gaze, eyeing the salonpas ad on the wall intently.
Sugawara can see goosebumps raise in between the soft baby hair sticking up on Oikawa’s nape. He can see Oikawa’s hand flying up to scratch the side of his neck, he can see the frown on Oikawa’s lips and the sneaky side glance Oikawa sends in his direction. All the telltale signs of frustration, maybe a little worry, some confusion, and regret. So much regret squeezed into that short, shifty peek towards Sugawara.
He can read Oikawa like a book by now.
Some days he wishes he couldn’t – when Oikawa lies. When he says he was not out running in the rain. When he says he slept early. When he says he’s not in pain. It would be easier, being ignorant, than to be a witness to it all with no power in his hands to stop Oikawa’s self-destruction. But Sugawara loves Oikawa too much to turn a blind eye and unlearn how to read him – he wants to know it all, even if he gets hurt in the process.
Sugawara takes a deep breath, readying his tone to be soft, soft but not soothing. Calm but not without weight.
“What makes you think that it would make me happy to know that you injured yourself?” he asks, pointing his look at Oikawa.
Oikawa flinches visibly, pulling his shoulder up ever so slightly in defense. He blinks, but his eyes don’t shift from the ad on the wall.
“Do I seem to be the type who laughs at others’ pain? Did I give off this vibe? Is this how you know me?” Sugawara pushes on, all quiet but not without an edge.
The clock ticks away, Oikawa’s breath hitches in the silence.
“I don’t remember an instance I gave you reason to believe I would be malicious,” Sugawara says. “Not once in the past four years.”
“You didn’t,” Oikawa murmurs barely audible.
“Then what?”
“I’m– not angry at you, I’m angry at myself.”
“That’s good, because I’m also angry at you.”
“Kou-chan,” Oikawa turns towards Sugawara finally, lips trembling in a pout.
“Don’t Kou-chan me.”
“You have to understand. I received a contract for one year in the pro league. One year.”
“No I don’t understand.”
“This is my only chance.”
“Bullshit, Tooru, and you know it just as well as me,” Sugawara says, and just then he finally crosses the one inch between them to hold Oikawa’s hand. “The Oikawa Tooru I know would say things like ‘my time definitely come’ with unparalleled conviction, without a hint of panic or a sign to crumble under stress.”
“The Oikawa Tooru you know also said ‘hit it until it breaks’ to the press,” Oikawa says, sighing. “Don’t say you don’t remember; you have that article plastered over the fridge.”
“It’s supposed to be a form of deterrence, not a cheer for you to actually break something. Especially not yourself.”
“The damage is done,” Oikawa replies, shrugging helplessly.
“It’s not unrepairable,” Sugawara says as he runs his thumb along the curve of Oikawa’s palm.
“The doctor said that it may take a year or longer to return to competitive sport.”
“The doctor’s right. But you will survive.”
“But will my career?” Oikawa asks, grabbing onto Sugawara’s hand to stop it in its motion.
“Today, your team won against Ushiwaka’s.”
“You say it as if it was a feat you didn’t already accomplish by age 18.”
“I did little to…” Sugawara starts, but he comes to a halt suddenly. “No, wait. I’m not saying that it’s all good if your career ends here and now because you’ve finally managed to beat Ushiwaka,” he says, reaching out with his free hand to cup the face of Oikawa. “I meant to say it as encouragement. This is only your beginning. Your volleyball is beautiful. It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen, and I’m not ready to give up on it. So don’t you dare to give up on it either.”
“But my contract is only for this one year–”
“Yeah. And so thousands of other people’s.”
“Kou-chan–”
“No.”
“Won’t you listen?”
“I’m not willing to,” Sugawara says, a soft smile sneaking up onto his lips. “You’re devaluing yourself way too much, Tooru. You’re one of the best players Japan has today.”
“I was never even invited to the national team, and I get injured before I could make my mark–”
“That last serve you did was amazing, even if the landing was way awkward,” Sugawara says. He doesn’t necessarily cut in the words of Oikawa, which come shabby and panicked, he just speaks as soon as Oikawa is out of air. He wants, more than anything, to sooth Oikawa’s thoughts, and to kick his confidence issues – with a little bit of coercion, firstly, but quite literally too if needed. “I watched the recap while on my way here, and let me tell you, I was mesmerized and I was not the only one. The commentators were basically screaming. Ushiwaka has complimented your technique on national television and sent you his best wishes for a speedy recovery.”
“Ew.”
“What I want to say is. You didn’t waste your chance,” Sugawara says pointedly, ignoring the disgusted faces Oikawa makes at the mention of Ushijima Wakatoshi. “You’re good. You’re the best setter in the league.”
“Give Tobio-chan a year to join and–”
“Oikawa,” Sugawara says, plastering his free hand over Oikawa’s mouth.
“Hmpf.”
“Shhh,” Sugawara hums leaning close and leaving a small peck on the temple of Oikawa. “Listen, for once.”
He waits, until Oikawa stops grimacing, then drops his hand to Oikawa’s shoulder gently.
“You convinced me,” Sugawara says, voice barely a whisper. “Back when I was hurt and insecure, you went out of your way to prove yourself to me and to convince me. So please. Let me convince you this time. Let my words be heard in that stubborn head of yours.”
Oikawa squints suspiciously, and Sugawara lets him to search his face for signs of whatever Oikawa is looking for. He’s honest, and he wants Oikawa to understand it too.
“You’re great. You’re doing great, and your talent is recognized by many. Please, don’t break yourself thinking you have to work harder to be able to stay where you are. You have already proven your skills. Your team loves you. They want you to stay. So please, take care of yourself. Prove them that you want to stay too by recovering fully, without rushing back half-healed just to be there. I will be by your side, no matter how much time or attention you need,” Sugawara gives Oikawa’s hand a little squeeze. “And the nationals? It will come eventually. You’re popular.”
“You say it as if it was a sin,” Oikawa says, a rare soft, shy smile appearing on his lips.
“Isn’t it?” Suagwara asks back, arching a brow.
Oikawa snorts, looking at his boyfriend’s grimace, laughter shaking his entire body, only to flinch painfully right afterwards.
“Torn tendons heal slowly,” Sugawara says, looking at the swelling. “How much easier it would’ve been if only you listened…”
“You can say ‘I said so’ you know.”
“Nah, I don’t want to,” Sugawara shakes his head, then leans on the shoulder of Oikawa. “I just want to convince you.”
“It must be a hard job,” Oikawa agrees.
“You’re good the way you are, Tooru.”
“No, I’m not,” Oikawa says, lifting a hand to pat the soft hair of Sugawara. “I still owe you an apology.”
“Accepted,” Sugawara murmurs into his shoulder. “On the condition that you don’t overdo it ever again.”
“I can’t make such a promise half-heartedly,” Oikawa says. “But I can promise that I will try?”
Sugawara lifts his head and gives him a long look. Oikawa’s ears come dusted with pink under his gaze.
“Will you?”
“I will.”
