My Review for My Hero Academia: You're Next

Spoilers ahead:

I liked it.

It's hard to compare to the other movies, though, since beyond the basic "Deku befriends new character then fights new villain with new friend's help" premise that all the movies share, the other movies at least have original plots.

You're Next is just the Overhaul arc. There are some twists to it, but "the head of an organized crime family whose power is the ability to reshape the environment using the unstable ability of a kidnapped and abused girl for his evil plan" is just... really on-the-nose.

I think the most interesting parts of the movie were the parts not like the Overhaul arc, like Giulio was cool, and that Anna wanted to die rather than be saved was interesting, and I loved how hammy Dark Might was, chewing the scenery and mugging to the camera constantly. The video game stuff was neat, I really liked that the final battle had a Phase 2 where the animators just go absolutely insane, and I also really liked the dream worlds.

I just wish all of those elements got more focus, most of those felt somewhat undercooked. Like Anna being suicidal didn't really get enough attention, Dark Might didn't feel betrayed enough by All Might's rejection, the video game section came and went, and only about half of the dream worlds got any focus.

It felt like the writers wanted to do too many things, and didn't focus enough on any of them. Like I think the dream world would have been better if they had cut like 20 minutes from the outside world and added 20 minutes to the dream world.

And there were missed opportunities, too, like I wish some random member of Class 1A had been compatible with Anna's power and used it. Like if Mineta or Sato rewrote their ability and became super strong for the rest of the movie, but Giulio erasing her power permanently at the end also unwrote all of the changes her power made.

Overall, You're Next felt like a very safe, heavily influenced by executives movie. Like, "we should make the plot similar to the Overhaul arc because fans love the Overhaul arc", "we need to have a Pro Hero subplot because the fans love the Pro Hero characters", "we need to give Bakugo and Todoroki a mini-boss fight because the fans like when those two get mini-boss fights", etc. You're Next had some good ideas, but it didn't take enough risks and the execution was a bit unfocused.

There's something completely sweet about this movie that centers on the ideals that All Might left behind after he retired, and himself, to be exact. We all know that All Might as a whole has inspired generations and generations of heroes along this story, and he will keep on as a symbol of how a hero must be; so it is reasonable to be angry or completely disgusted when a villain tries to twist those ideals and the imagine that represents All Might, and we see that in this movie. It's hilarious, watching Dark Might (Jesus I can't believe that name either) try to embody what All Might was but externally; face, body, and personality. He said it was his turn and tried to emulate the power the Symbol of Peace had, but never the drive, compassion, kindness, and overall good person All Might is, or the actual ideals he has; the passion to do good, to save and be someone that inspires future generations to also do good but to be better than him.

So, it was completely funny and enjoyable to watch when Todoroki, Bakugou, and Deku beat him up.

This movie was a homage to All Might and everything that he was and is, since we can't forget Toshinori might have lost OFA but he is a hero at heart.
