Winning rarely changes how people perceive us and almost never soothes our insecurities. Winning, as most of us conceive it, is external and public. I didnβt yet know that the most rewarding activities of my life would be those done in secret.

Novel I'm reading is a fictional memoir about a guy who becomes an activist during the AIDS crisis, and though he is fictional, he meets several real figures Forrest Gump style. And his first political action is to organize a rent strike in his building, which is owned by Fred Trump, so there's a footnote that says "The Trump family categorically objects to the characterization of Fred Trump in this book, which they dismiss as "the fake memoir of a nobody.""

I knew about Confessions Of The Fox being a fictional historical biography with faux academic editing going in; My Government Means To Kill Me snuck up on me around ch.4-5, but I gotta say I'm into it

Quote
It is difficult for the young to understand the strictures of the past. You want your elders to have fought every slight and grievous offense that came our way. But remember, at all times--even yours, even now--there are unjust laws we abide...We have to be calculating about when to bend and when to rebel.

Two quick book blurbs
I swear to you that I did not read these two books back-to-back as part of any sort of June/Pride Month β¦ thing, but once I realized what I had done I decided that the Mark Oshiro book on my shelf had to be next, and Iβve got a book about the Stonewall uprising that is probably going to get moved up in the queue. At any rate, letβs talk. TJ Klune has written three books for adults so far, with aβ¦

Finished this today! This novel was like a Danteβs Inferno whoβs who of the AIDS crisis, which I really liked. Definitely one to check out for the last few days of Pride.
