T-ara Eunjung News1 Interview ②
You’ll soon hold a fan meeting in Macau to celebrate T-ara’s 15th anniversary. Was it hard to balance preparing for that and your drama?
T-ara's activities mostly involved just meeting for a photoshoot for a day. For the overseas interviews, I went when there were no drama shoots, so balancing both was fine. It was just a matter of switching roles without disrupting either side. Of course, at home, I felt busy on my own (laughs). After finishing the drama, I went to Japan yesterday (September 29th) to record some songs. I recorded two songs in one day. I’m grateful that I can continue my work as both a singer and an actress. Many people talk about not having any work these days, so I’m thankful to be able to do both, including T-ara activities.
How does it feel to reach your 15th anniversary?
The number 15 didn’t feel real at first, but seeing many of my fellow second-generation idols making comebacks for their 15th anniversary made me realize it’s a big deal. We’ve had work offers throughout the years, so it didn’t feel as significant to me. For me, the 10th anniversary was more meaningful. I had always wanted to do something special for that. This time, we’re holding a fan meeting that’s more like a fan event than a concert. It’s not just a music performance, so it’s lighter in tone, but I think it could be a good way for us to continue T-ara’s activities.
Do you have plans to continue T-ara's activities?
We’ve never talked about it in concrete terms. It’s always been a matter of coordinating schedules when they align. Since we don’t have a centralized management system, each of us is pursuing our own activities, so continuing T-ara depends on each member’s desire to keep going. I’m really grateful to the members for their continued commitment.
Is there anything you’d like to say to fans who are waiting for T-ara’s activities?
I know many fans are disappointed and wondering why we’re not holding an event in Korea when we’re doing one in Macau. If we get the chance, I’d love to do a concert in Korea. I think many people would come just to hear us sing. Since we’ve worked hard to keep going, I really want to make it happen. It would be great to receive many proposals (laughs). There’s talk about an Asian tour, but I also think a concert in Korea is important.
Do you have any goals as an actress?
I want to break free from the stereotype of being a "daily drama actress" or "lifestyle actor." Can’t it be viewed differently? Since I’m doing daily dramas while also being an active idol in T-ara, I’d like to show that daily dramas can have a fresh perspective, even for idols. For example, when I was cast in Be My Dream Family as a supporting role and a young mom, many people asked, "Why are you doing this?" But I thought it would be fun. If you’re an actor, shouldn’t it just be about acting well? Playing a lead in a big drama came because of T-ara, and while I could use my name value for roles when I’m not doing T-ara, what really matters is how I act when I’m in the lead role. I believed that I needed to build that credibility step by step, so I took on the role without hesitation. And look—I ended up winning a supporting actor award (laughs).
Given all your hard work, do you now feel more ambitious about winning an acting award for Suji and Uri?
I did (laughs). But strangely, after the show ended, that feeling disappeared. I just became more humble. The show achieved a viewership rating close to 16%, which was far beyond what I imagined. The real reward wasn’t an award but the immediate feedback from viewers—it was incredible. Of course, if they want to give me an award because of the high ratings, I’d humbly accept, but this time, I found the viewers' reactions truly fascinating. I also have my eyes on the Best Couple Award. If I won that for a daily drama, it’d be the first time, so I’m a bit ambitious about that too (laughs).

tw: self harm mention (no actual harm done, it’s about recovery but it does mention the hard parts of recovering so…)
i’m officially 4 months clean of self harm! i feel really weird about it. on the one hand i’m really proud of myself, i’m two thirds of the way to my goal of 6 months clean (which would make it the longest i’ve been clean since i started self harming 8 years ago), but this anniversary doesn’t make me feel good. it just makes me feel like i should be better mentally if i’m clean from self harm. i have it in my mind that the only way i’m valid in my struggles is if i’m taking out my pain physically on myself. i feel like my still very present mental distress isn’t bad enough to be taken seriously. it makes me want to start self harming again so that i can “prove” my severity. i know it’s bs and my addiction talking, i literally went through withdrawal when i hit the two week mark of being clean, and my addiction is trying every way to get me to come back to it. but i’m not going to. it hurts so much but i refuse to go back to it. i’m working on letting myself feel negative emotions without taking it out on myself. if i need to have a release of emotions, i’m just going to listen to the 10th anniversary concert of les mis, that’s a sure fire way to get me to feel emotions 😂 and i can make myself feel better with fluffy fics afterwards. just to have the whole spread of emotions
anyway, if you read this, thank you.

danny phantom 8-13 thoughts! again, under the cut bc I blew through 6 episodes in one go...
-LOVE THE WAY THE GHOST ZONE LOOKS. but theres fucking ghost cops??? ghost jail??? that SUCKS imagine dying and going to jail in your AFTERLIFE. danny going to JAIL WAS NOT something I expected. but seeing all the enemies together and work with danny to bust out. SO ICONIC I love that actually. and the thing about real world stuff acting as ghosts in the ghost zone is very cool.
-'there are some things more important that hunting ghosts!' mrs fenton says, about her husband forgetting their anaversary (FOR THE 18TH YEAR IN A ROW?? CHRIST) and not about, idk, their son clearly freaked out. she didnt even notice he was gone into the ghost zone!!! he might be a bad husband BUT shes not the best mom. they suck and I don't care about their relationship problems I care about these kids. danny doing his best to clean the house to keep his mom from getting mad at his dad?? hes such a good boy I want to cry, this is not his place, his dad should be cleaning his own shit up!!!
-maddie's butch lesbian sister is living my best life in her lil cabin. also being a snarky bitch to jack. queen. and her getting a 10th anniversary of her divorce. LOVE IT.
-mr. lancer being a cheerleader in his younger years makes perfect sense to me. king shit.
-dr. spectra's cat ears/mullet hairstyle?? sooo cute. I also just love the concept of a ghost just. sucking out people's positivity and feeding on emotions. a great villain. she put danny in a fucking diaper what the FUCK. and keeping it cold so no one would suspect shes a ghost??? INCREDIBLE. and her gay little blob sidekick. wlw mlm evil solidarity.
-JAZZ FOCUSED EP. YEAAAH!!! her first thought when she saw the ghosts was like 'omg i gotta tell danny :)' and her going to the teacher and also councilor trying to get help for him...shes just 16 but shes trying so hard to help him out :( watching this when youre younger I can imagine ppl are like omg annoying!! but watching this when im older im just like :( jazz baby im SO sorry </3 SHE BODIED THAT GHOST THOUGH. and the fact she didnt tell danny she knew surprised me. like, shes patient and waiting on him to tell her when hes ready!! thats so so sweet.
-christ the parents talking about 'PEELING IT LIKE AN ONION. AND EXAMINING REMAINS' of ghosts RIGHT INFRONT OF DANNY.
-'why am i so depressed and angry all the time!!' DANNY YOURE 14. i mean it IS a ghost this time, but...
-579$ top?? VALERIE NO ITS NOT EVEN CUTE IT DOESNT EVEN GO WITH THAT OUTFIT AAAA. tho this ep is called shades of gray..VALERIE FOCUSED EP FINALLY????! *THUNDEROUS APPLAUSE* I already knew about red huntress from my redesigns, but I didn't exactly know what that entails or how/why, so, it's fun to see the Origins.
-ghost pubby! ghost pubby!!!!! why is the dog a ghost?? the implication that the company had guard dogs and got rid of them...what did they DO. is it just the unfinished business?? of not having that toy it was looking for?? god I hope so.
I feel SOOO bad for valerie tho, my god. her friends are shunning her for what, because her dad lost her job and she had to move??? horrible. (and the fact the dog wrecked the moving van too...) I also love how 'from wisconsin' on the package was an IMMEDIATE RED FLAG FOR ME. WISCONSIN=EVIL NOW. vlads so petty.
-it took valerie like 5 mins to get the hang of hunting ghosts and shes already a much bigger threat than his parents tbh. who've been trying and studying this for years. and a more valid reason <3 love her shes so cute and cool. new daughter alert.
-'i should do SOMETHING to help valerie' no shit danny???
-'who is that, awesome outfit!' -top gay sam moments. i was going to say. before it immediately cuts to sam kissing danny LMFAOOO. don't think I like that, it puts tucker in a weird third wheel position... the next ep involves them holding hands and blushing when danny's cold...URGH No. not a fan ngl. the trope of 'if theres a girl in a trio she has to end up with one of the two guys!!'
-right as I say that they take it to extremes!! and ember shoots him with a love ray gun that makes him OBSESSIVE OVER SAM. AND SHE TAKES HIS HANDS AND SAYS 'YOU DONT FEEL THAT WAY ABOUT ME, I DONT FEEL THAT WAY ABOUT YOU' and her saying she doesnt want to be together like this. and tucker saying 'i always knew you two would get together!!' dont manifest it tucker please. the show pushing for it so hard makes me not want it KSHKJKJD I KNOW its probably canon. it sucks though. im a hater.
-vlad just LURKING AROUND THE SCHOOL GIVING VALERIE GIFTS ASJKDHKJ YOU WEIRD PETTY OLD MAN GO HOME!!!
-EMBERRRRR YOU WILL REMEMBERRRRRR . this is the one thing I kinda remember from when I was a kid EMBERRRRR ilu. top 10 cartoon bops. sams being a hater. popular things are popular for a reason. mr. lancer also being a hater. also everyone wearing her color scheme ..its a really good look, the purple, black, and minty color...
-penguins exist in the ghost zone. confirmed.
-EMBER JUST SHOWING UP AT A RANDOM HIGHSCHOOL TO PLAY?? UNANNOUNCED, MID DAY??? girl get a tour schedule. make some money or smth damn. I know shes probably doing it for the power boost but. lord. anyway if your show doesnt have a concert scene/ep, is it even valid.
-fellas is this gay. (she uses a GRAPPLING HOOK TO SHOOT OUT THE WINDOW AFTER SEEING AN EMBER VAN GO BY RIGHT AFTER THIS SHOT)
-hey, she had an undercut at some point!! my redesign!!! was accurate!! in..a way
-I feel like danny has a lot of pent up aggression ngl, him being heartbroken about sam and immediately going IM GONNA GO TAKE IT OUT ON EMBER. I mean she needs to be stopped I guess But. jazz has the right idea he needs therapy and a HEALTHY outlet.
-tucker singing > my singing
-girls cant be gamers -tucker and danny sexist moments. her being chaos in the game OWNED.
-TUCKERS HAT IS A BERET??? I THOUGHT IT WAS A BEANIE. SAM CALLED IT A BERET. WH.
-it was actually nice of lancer to let danny retake the test, and he go to play games again. smh. epic cringe gamer moments compilation. and driving him home!!! I actually like him as a character. anyway teachers like lancer are SO appreciated. I was failing middle school because of mental problems, and felt so dumb and got embarrassed by teachers who would just get onto me instead of bothering to ask what the real problem was, but when I was taking my ged classes I had a wonderful teacher who kept reassuring me that I was smart, and I got honors!! danny is SUCH a little shit to him (understandable, 14, but) but seeing them getting along better and danny putting in effort. SO CUTE. THATS MY SON, STUDYING HARD!!!! and being so PROUD OF HIMSELF!!! 91!!! BITCH!!! A- is STILL AN A!!!
-'why dont they ever realize thats me in a dress' mr lancer i am CRYING. i realized.
-technus being my ghost grandpa who cant game asking tucker for help. bless his heart. his out of date old ppl lingo circles back to being endearing <3 tucker not recognizing him despite the like, lack of any kind of serious disguise...I do love their lil in-game outfits....sam being the tank rules. I like technus' spider design also. more characters need to be giant freaky spiders, imo.
-finding your gf a new host because she cant maintain her ghost body outside the zone? amazing. using jazz as the host? ILL KILL YOU. jazz immediately accepting a ride home from a guy she just met and letting him know where she lives. letting him IN THE HOUSE??? nooo girl no lets use common sense </3
-sooo cringe the parents were like 'good job for spying on your sister' tho wtffff. doesnt matter if hes a bad guy, thats fucked. everytime these parents BREATHE im like. these are MY kids now <3
-BAD LUCK BEING A THEME OF THE 13TH EPISODE. thats super fun. johnny 13 being his name is so. iconic. your last name is a NUMBER? also goth tucker. I actually love the look. everyone looks good goth. 'the ladies love the eyeliner and onyx nail polish' sam you are sooo right every man needs to at least try those two things. im a lesbian and I agree. same, danny, your bff is gnc af
-LOVE kitty's design. and just, the concept of a ghost with a bike. couple goals, except yes stay away from jazz.

**Please do not repost without credit** [TRANS] 2021.04.28 SONE NOTE LIVE vol 31 with Taeyeon
Staff: The plan this time is photoshoots in various situations! This is a first for SONE JAPAN, so how was it?
Taeyeon: It was really fun! I wanted to show even more different looks.
Staff: Your beloved dog, Zero, was looking on during the photoshoot! Do you often bring Zero to work?
Taeyeon: Recently I always bring Zero. We’re together during CM shoots and Korean variety program recordings♡
Staff: The photoshoot went smoothly, but what do you usually think about during the shoot?
Taeyeon: I think about, “I wonder if it will look good if I posed like this~” and “I wonder what kind of pose I should make for a good picture~” (laughs).
Staff: You shot in several different situations and moods. Do you have a favorite scene that you want SONE JAPAN to see? Please share why as well.
Taeyeon: I’d like them to look at my natural sides rather than the situations for this SONE NOTE LIVE.
Staff: How did you spend your time while waiting for the scene switchovers and camera settings changes?
Taeyeon: I would zone out or check the time to see if the photoshoot was on schedule!
Staff: If there is another chance for a photoshoot for SONE NOTE LIVE, what scenes and situations would you like to try out?
Taeyeon: I want to try taking selfies while looking at the monitor (laughs).
Staff: If you were to have a photoshoot with the members, what kind of situation would you like to shoot? Please share why as well.
Taeyeon: I want to try taking pictures with a carefree concept! It’s most enjoyable to take pictures freely in a natural environment, and I feel like a natural feeling can be captured in photographs.
Staff: In ‘SMTOWN LIVE “Culture Humanity’” on New Year’s day, you performed “What Do I Call You”, which you released last year in December. How was it?
Taeyeon: I believe that SONE and those who are not SONE were able to hear my singing voice. I was happy to perform after such a long time, but it was in the middle of winter and I was very cold… (laughs).
Staff: Last year in September SNSD had their 10th anniversary in Japan. Looking back at these 10 years, please share any memorable events or episodes and the reasons why.
Taeyeon: At any rate, I want to see the other members (laughs). During tours, I can recall even now how I would always have each area’s specialty with everyone. Also, I’d do my own makeup during concerts, even though we had makeup staff (laughs).
Staff: Is there anything that you think has changed for you during these 10 years, and is there anything that hasn’t changed?
Taeyeon: What’s changed is that 10 years ago I would usually perform onstage with a group, but recently I’m usually performing solo. What hasn’t changed would probably be how I get nervous before performances and my Japanese ability…
Staff: If you could go back anytime in the past 10 years, how many years ago would you go back? Please share the reason as well.
Taeyeon: The first tour. I had my most exciting moments and also my most nervous performances♡
Staff: Is there anything that the Taeyeon now would like to say to the Taeyeon of 10 years ago?
Taeyeon: There, there! You’re doing well~~!!
Staff: Do you have any goals or anything new that you want to try out? Please share why as well.
Taeyeon: I would like to be an artist who has more control over herself.
Staff: Finally a message for SONE JAPAN, please!
Taeyeon: I know that you’re always waiting for me, so I’m not going to ask you to “please wait for me”. Please look forward to my upcoming performances, as well as the various content by SNSD members♡

I was going to let the Tegoshi business rest for awhile because it’s really exhausting. However, @dangomay pointed to a part of an interview Tegoshi did for Wink Up 2020.01, the last one that featured him. Ironically, even though I have almost every issue of every magazine I only got Massu’s part of that one. Anyway, what’s interesting is that in this issue Tegoshi looks back on his career by looking at old Wink Up photoshoots. The most interesting part is when he talks about the issue 2013.12, which came out shortly after the 10th Anniversary concert (and incidentally just when I joined the fandom). His comment is very relevant now so I decided to translate.
There was also the photoshoot we did as 4 while eating as we shot the 10th Anniversary special. To be honest, at the time I thought about leaving NEWS. I was unable to like the band and I didn’t even want anyone to think that our relationship was good. (laugh) But now of course I like the members. But if you put together a group all sorts of things happen. But when I said to the 3 “I want to quit” we were able to talk earnestly. We talked a lot, I felt that I was really needed and loved and I remained. I thought “Let’s try harder”. Now my goal is to make STORY a success. And if that comes true, I would like to get involved in Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Also, I would like to become the power of Johnny’s Entertainment. The fact that now my life is fun every day is thanks to Johnny-san, so I would like to give something back. I also think in the future it would be nice to produce Johnny Jrs or train my kohai.
First of all, Tegoshi, you little bitch! It is a little shocking to learn that the members had to beg him to stay after the so-called “10ve” concert, just a year after they resumed activities. I also think the time he was on SCP and Kame asked him if he ever wanted to quit, he talked about this. No matter how I look at it, the fact is he is in a position where he holds the power over the band’s future and the other members are very interested in keeping him happy.
But apart from that, it really doesn’t feel like he would say something like this unprompted if he was considering leaving soon. Then again, nobody would have guessed he wanted to back in 2013. I’ve spent 6,5 years trying to crack this puzzle called Tegoshi Yuya but it feels like I haven’t even gotten close.
Thinking about it objectively, I just can’t see what he could want away from the agency. He has so much in JE. He was resources. He’s the lead vocal and constantly steals the spotlight at every chance he gets. He - let’s be frank - doesn’t do much for the band in terms of tours, costumes and overall creative input. The other members do tons of work behind the scenes and let him shine. He has Juniors who worship the ground he walks on. He has all the best work - ItteQ, Soccer jobs, and now a gaming gig? The boy is living a dream. And he gets away with most of his scandals without little to no consequence. Most importantly, he has the members who look out for him and willing to support him no matter what. What can he get? The freedom to fuck around unrestrained? Bunshun won’t leave him alone ever. Producing? He can do that in JE. Performing overseas? I’m not sure there will be a big audience for him alone. Hell, he could do a solo within JE if he wanted. I always felt like the reason he didn’t was because at heart, he was a team player. I’d like to think that I was right.

ROCK AND READ BAND 003 A9 Interview
Something will awaken in these "beautiful beasts"?! Let's take another look at A9's origins before their 15th year anniversary!
There will be an "important announcement" 10 days after this magazine is released, on August 10 at Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall. As we look forward to the live show, let's take a look at their 15-year history. The members were frank and open about everything, such as unknown backstories that some members learned about for the first time from before the band formed, discord during the period they were classified as neo Visual-kei, and setbacks at their International Forum Hall A show, which became a turning point for them. That they can be so honest here is surely because they are in a better place now.
A9, who are celebrating their 15th year anniversary this year, first released the 15TH ANNIVERSARY BEST ALBUMS "Kachou no Chou" and "Fuugetsu no Shi", re-recordings of songs chosen by the members, on April 24th. This was something that was kind of expected. The issue is then what came after that.
Show: Yes (laughs). Many things.
Yes. On the first day on the tour on May 4th, you made some very interesting announcements. The tour that you are currently on now (interview took place in mid-June) in conjunction with those albums, "BEST OF A9 TOUR ALIVERSARY" had "A9 LAST ONE MAN TOUR" added to the tour title. Also, the tour final, which will take place on August 10th at Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall, "BEST OF A9 TOUR ALIVERSARY FINAL A9 15TH ANNIVERSARY" also had "A9 LAST ONEMAN" added to the title. On this day, the band will make an "important announcement". On top of that, the live at Hibiya will be your last one man live, but it was announced that at the A9 festival live, "Beautiful Beast Fest.", to take place afterwards on August 24th, for some reason, even though it's A9's festival live, they will be the opening act. Although you are welcoming your 15th year anniversary, we don't know if A9 is in a celebratory mood or not (laughs). Today, while asking about a general outline of these last 15 years, I would also like to ask about the true meaning of these interesting announcements.
All: Sure.
In what aspects do you feel that this is your 15th anniversary year?
Nao: That my stiff shoulders won't go away. I'm joking (laughs). It would be that just looking at the number of songs we have, we have over 100 songs! Personally, it doesn't feel like we have that many songs. But we already have over 100 songs. That's amazing.
Show: We have about 120 songs.
Nao: The fact that the number of songs we have are in the triple digits actually makes it feel like we have been doing this for 15 years. Though saying we have been doing this for 15 years, we have always been doing this, so I don't actually feel the gravity of that. But taking the time to think about it, 15 years is quite some time. It's very long.
It's the length of time it would take for a newborn baby to reach third year in middle school. 15 years.
Nao: That's right. When fans tell me "I first started listening to you when I was in elementary school", it makes me think "Are you serious?!". When I think that those fans who were elementary school students back then are now adults and are full-fledged members of society, it really is a long period of time. It makes me actually feel just how long 15 years is.
Saga: I don't really get that feeling if you tell me a newborn baby would be in third year in middle school, but if I were to compare that length of time to a prison sentence, I do think "That's real long" (laughs).
It was just an example, but still (laughs).
Saga: Mine was a bad example, but putting it in terms of prison sentences makes it feel long.
Tora: That's true!
Saga: Just try imagining "A9 in prison for 15 years". It would make you think that we weren't able to be out in the free world for quite a long time.
Tora: Gahahaha.
On the other side of the fence.
Saga: Right. Don't bands have an element that is detached from the real world, by nature? Although I do think we have to match our feeling to society, when you've been in a band this long, this feeling starts to disalign with that of society, and become different. Lately I've been getting this feeling that when you're not in the free world and on the other side of the fence for 15 years, "Even if we were to go out into the free world now, it would be impossible to live a normal life". I feel that I can no longer live a normal life. In our 15th year anniversary, I get this kind of feeling that even from now on, I'll be living like a lifetime gambler.
Tora: I might not even feel that we are in our 15th year at all. Because our band has had more events than I thought it would.
What do you mean by events?
Tora: We left our management company, and there were many other troubles and accidents (laughs).
And in actuality, you yourself had a big accident (emergency operation due to myocardial infarction) last year.
Tora: Since there were many things that happened, I feel like we were able to do this for 15 years without getting bored.
Hiroto: For me, I feel it at those moments when I get dejavu. Actually having experienced the moment in the past, recently, there's been plenty of times where I was like "I've felt this feeling in this situation before". I get that feeling when I'm with the members, and I've been getting it quite a lot at lives too. Right now, we're on tour for the best of album, and there have been many times where I felt "I don't quite remember it clearly since it was such a long time ago, but I've felt this feeling before". That is where I actually feel that we are in our 15th year.
Show: You might feel that quite a lot recently since we were on tour for "Kachou no Chou", the best of album that covers our early years. Now, we've started touring for "Fuugetsu no Shi", the best of album that covers our years as "Alice Nine". For each tour, we travelled across half of Japan. As for the way we built the setlist for the tours, we say that this particular block is for "Alpha1", and this block is for "VANDALIZE2", and we play 3 - 4 songs from the albums without any talk breaks in between. What I think when we do that kind of tour is...... Hehehe, the ladies in front of us go back to being "young girls". That is what I feel, looking out from the stage. "VANDALIZE" is the last album we released under KING RECORDS, and that was already 10 years ago. When we play songs from "VANDALIZE", those 25-year old ladies go back to being 15 years old. Although we probably can't compare ourselves to the "magic" that happens with bands such as BUCK-TICK, even for bands with a history such as ours, that kind of magic happens too. I really do feel that music transcends time.
In that way, it was a really good thing to have made these best of albums.
Show: That's right. The best of album itself was a project which started without any motivations like "If we released this, then our old fans will come back".
If I remember correctly, the best of albums were made with the goal of the current version of yourselves facing your older songs and drawing out the good qualities of the songs to complete them.
Show: That's right. But when we did that, many fans who we've not seen in a while came to see our live shows. I think that as a project, it was a good that we did that. Re-arranging over 20 songs at once, half-way through it seemed like Saga was going to work himself to death, and I did wonder if he would be okay. Honestly, I was worried about whether or not we would produce the results that corresponded to the efforts put into it, but we are currently on tour feeling that it was a good that we did this, so I'm relieved. Looking at the fans' faces during the live show and thinking that music really does transcend time, through the setlist that is packed with several albums of songs, I feel twice the weight of 15 years.
So, could you please tell us once again the details of how A9 was formed 15 years ago?
Show: If we were to give a proper explanation--
Saga: It's a band formed with members with really bad reputations.
Nao: (Looking at Saga) You didn't have a bad reputation, though?
Saga: Yeah, I didn't.
Nao: Neither did I.
Show & Saga: You did, you did!
Nao: What?! I'm sure I didn't~ (laughs).
Show: To be completely honest, Hiroto, Nao, and myself were invited to be in another band. When I asked Nao "So, are we gonna be in this band?", he was like "Nope, not me".
Nao: Gahahahaha. You're making me out to be the bad guy (laughs).
Show: Before that, Saga and Nao--
Nao: That was at Rokumeikan3, right?
Saga: Right.
Nao: I barged into the place and suddenly said to Saga "Be in my band", and exchanged contact info with him.
Saga: Even though I was still in another band.
Nao: At the time, I thought my life was in a dangerous spot, so I had no time to care about others around me.
Since your band had already disbanded at the time, you were desperate.
Nao: Yes. It was just at the time where the internet was getting more widespread, and after looking at many bands on the internet, I thought "Him. He's good".
Saga: So I was chosen in the same way people choose prostitutes from a webpage (laughs). By Nao.
Show: That's an awful analogy (laughs).
Nao: So when I saw him play live at Rokumeikan, he was exactly as I thought he would be like, so I spared no time to go and convince him to start a band with me.
Show & Hiroto & Tora: Ahh~.
Show: Even though we've been together for 15 years, it's my first time hearing about it in such detail.
Nao: I was in a really dangerous spot back then.
Saga: It was unheard of. He tried to headhunt me even though the other band members were standing right in front of us.
Nao: Hahaha. That is crazy.
Saga: It was that bravery of Nao, who had tried to headhunt me in that situation, that won me over.
Show: Amazing!!
Hiroto: That is amazing.
Saga: It left a strong impression on me.
Show: That's a nice story. It really is my first time hearing that he charged into Rokumeikan.
Hiroto: I've only heard the story from the point in time when these two (Nao and Saga) were together and other other two (Show and Tora) were together. So this is my first time hearing this.
Despite it being your 15th year, you finally discovered the truth!
Hiroto: That's right.
Saga: But I had my own circumstances, and it had only been about half a year since I joined that band. So when Nao came upon me at that time, I said "It's definitely too early to quit". On top of that, I had been added to the band after they formed, so I kept thinking over it quite a lot. I mean, what kind of person would it make me, to quit at that time? But under the pressure of Nao's energy, I thought about joining his band.
Nao: Umm, you might have forgotten, but at that time, Saga had said to me, "I'm in the process of joining another band, and we already have the members finalized".
Saga: Huh? Really? I was invited to join quite a lot of bands.
Nao: That's right.
You were really popular.
Saga: Yes. I was at peak popularity. As a bassist, I'm just right.
Show: Ever since back then, Saga was a bassist that could make a band not doing so well have a "big break", simply because "the bassist is good-looking".
Amazing!!
Hiroto: What do you mean "just right"? You stood out like no one's business. When you looked at the flyers, all you could look at was him. And that "him" was Saga.
Saga: It certainly is true that I was popular among band members. Even though I'm not that social.
You received invitations from everywhere to join their band.
Saga: Right. But even among all that, Nao had left an especially strong impression on me, like "This guy is crazy".
Nao: So with the band Saga was invited to join, the members actually were in the middle of joining a management company.
Saga: That's right.
Show: Were you at the stage where they would treat you to BBQ meat from Jojoen4?
Saga: Right, that's right! I ate BBQ meat and they treated me well. At that time, I had already pulled Nao into this new band.
Nao: And so I was also treated to BBQ meat from Jojoen.
Hiroto: How cunning of him (laughs).
Nao: Yeah! Gahahaha!
Saga: At that time, Show & Tora had contacted Nao about starting a new band.
Show: That's right. I called Nao at about 10 in the morning. What I remember Nao saying to me at the time was just this one phrase: "I'm strict, you know?".
Nao: Puhahahahaha!
Show: His enthusiasm was at another level. Even at that time, Nao said "We're already old men compared to the young kids, so we can't keep starting new bands. My next band will be my last band". It really felt like he was on the edge of a cliff.
Saga: Right. Hearing that about Nao, I also got infected with that feeling, and even I started to get this "Oh crap" feeling. There was no other way about it, and we thought we better make a decision. So we spoke openly to the management company that treated us to BBQ meat, right? If I remember correctly, Nao contacted them.
Nao: Right. When I told them, "To be honest, it's impossible to go in the same direction with these members and be serious about this, so we quit", they were really kind and listened to us, and said "It is what it is". Because of that, Saga and I were able to form a band with Show and Tora.
Hiroto: By the way, I received an invitation to join the band of the president of that company.
Show & Tora: Oh?
Hiroto: But this was after I had met the other four, so I was also honest and said, "There's another band that I want to be in", and they understood, and said to me "Do your best".
Show: Wow. So after myself, Tora, Nao, and Saga got together, the four of us made an assault on the disbandment live of Hiroto's band.
Saga: We sure did.
Hiroto: I think the live the four of you came to was before the disbandment live? Because the band that these two (Nao and Saga) were in also played at the disbandment live.
Nao: Really?
Hiroto: "Really?", he says (laughs).
Show: Even his own memories are getting fuzzy.
Nao: I don't remember.
Saga: Right! It was the band in the management company that treated us to BBQ meat. We were serious about the band, so we played live shows and put in the effort. But Nao was pissed off all the time. To the point I felt sorry for the other members.
Nao: Even though I joined the band later, I had the most complaints. It was after putting in the effort that I had spoke to the company about it being impossible to continue working with these members.
I see. Hearing these stories, it feels like it was Nao's passion and seriousness that led the way to the formation of A9.
Saga: I think it is correct to say that Nao's passion formed the band.
Show: When we joined PS Company, I had even said to the manager at the time "I don't want to stand out, so can you write on Wikipedia that the "Nao formed the band"?".
Really?
Show: Yes. I'm serious. The manager had said to me that being a vocalist is a huge mental strain, so I shouldn't be the leader. So I discussed it with Nao, and ever since joining the company, Nao had taken on the role of leader.
Hiroto & Saga: Oh~.
Nao: All I remember is that the company president said to me "NaoNao, you be the leader".
But to think that it was for the sake of reducing the mental strain on Show.
Nao: What about the mental strain on me (laughs)?
Well, now that you mention it (laughs).
Show: So until the band formed, Nao had been pressing forward and had a lot of enthusiasm, but right after we formed the band, Nao had kind of deflated.
Nao: Nahahahahaha.
Show: He wouldn't show up to rehearsals or would show up late. He did a complete 180 from his serious self.
Saga: There were even times when he didn't show up for interviews.
I can't even imagine it, seeing how he is today.
Show: I know, right? But he went through such times.
Tora: I even answered some interview questions for Nao.
Show: Yeah, you did.
Tora: I randomly wrote answers, like "Q: What is your ideal type of girl? A: Yumi Adachi".
Nao: Ahahahahahahaha!
Show: On top of that, when we were deciding on our band name, only Nao had already gone home. So we had no choice but to decide between the four of us at the restaurant.
Hiroto: It was at a fast-food restaurant. We wrote down band name ideas on the napkins and folded them so you couldn't see the name. Then we opened them one by one, and one of the names was "アリス九5".
Oh. By the way, what were the other potential band names?
Show: "ROSSO", "KORN", and "Ms. Anita".
Tora: Gahahahaha! I remember that.
Show: There were already bands called "ROSSO" and "KORN", and "Ms. Anita" was the name of a foreigner who was in the news headlines at the time, so the only band name that we could use was "アリス九".
Is that so? To go back a little bit, when the five of you got together, for you, Nao, did you get the feeling that this was something you could pour your soul into, as your last band?
Nao: I thought that with these members, we could do something, and I could bet my life on this. I thought it was something I could get serious about.
So what was the reason behind you wanting to join PS Company?
Show: From around our third live show, we suddenly got more people coming to see us. Nao was already a famous bandman, Saga was already famous and more people will show up with just him being in the band, and myself and Tora were also famous, in many ways (laughs). So in the 2 - 3 months after starting the band, one of Hiroto's acquaintances was handling all the calls. For tickets and such. But they said they couldn't sleep because their phone wouldn't stop ringing. So we were at the limit of doing things on our own.
Nao: There were also some livehouses you couldn't rent out if you weren't a corporation. We thought that we couldn't go beyond this, so we started talking about joining a management company.
Hiroto: So we thought if we were going to join a company now, it would be PS Company.
Show: With Nao's connections, we got ourselves a black and white page in SHOXX6 that introduced our band. the GazettE's manager at the time saw it and apparently talked about it in PS Company, like "These kids are going to make it big". So we handed a proposal that outlined the band and a demo tape to the underling of that manager.
So you kind of made presentation material for the band?
Show: That's right. About a month after that, the company president listened to it and contacted us. They apparently decided that if we came late, they wouldn't let us join. At the time, the president told us that because we showed up on time, we were able to join the company.
Hiroto: We went to go meet them at around 11 at night. All of us.
Show: The meeting ended at around 5 in the morning, and after that, we went to one of the member’s houses...... Now that we've come this far, we have to tell the truth (laughs). If we don't, it will be inconsistent.
Saga: To give the true story, we had actually played at a PS Company event once before meeting them. At the time, we were kind of dropping hints to them that we wanted to join the company. If I remember correctly, we also handed them some presentation material directly. At the time, they had told us "Now is not a good time".
Hiroto: Oh yeah! For about a month after that, we really didn't hear anything from them.
Saga: Just when we were about to give up, they contacted us.
Was that around the time when the GazettE had joined PS Company and they were going full steam ahead?
Hiroto: They were. It was also right after MIYAVI and Kagrra, made their major debut.
Saga: People have always said that we were a band that PS Company made. People around us often said to us things like "You're a band that PS Company made just by bringing together good-looking people, right?".
People did say that (laughs).
Saga: That's not the case at all.
Show: It's just as you have read in this interview.
Saga: It's a band that Nao had formed.
So where did the band concept of "blending of Japanese and Western style", which アリス九號. had at the time, come from?
Show: The management company had said to us "Come up with a catchphrase about what your band is about", so it's only just something that was added on.
Hiroto: At the time we joined PS Company, all the bands had a catchphrase that was kind of like a subtitle for them.
Show: It was a phrase added to our name because of the company rule.
Saga: Did we have that subtitle attached to our name?
Hiroto: No. We refused to have it. Right from the beginning, we never did what we were told.
Even though in PS Company, you look most like the honour students, but you actually weren't.
Hiroto: Yeah. We didn't add anything ourselves, because we were like "We can only come up with lame phrases!".
You refused to add a subtitle, but you listened to the company when they told you to put a period at the end of the band name.
Show: That was instructions given to us after the fengshui of the band's name was examined.
Hiroto: As we joined PS Company, they said to us "The number of strokes in your band name isn't good. There's one stroke missing, so change your band name".
Show: So I said "Then I'll just add a dot on the end", and we became "アリス九號.".
At first, your name was "アリス九", right?
Show: Yes. When I was writing down our band's name at Takadanobaba AREA7, the staff there said, "Oh, it's like Sakamoto Kyu (坂本九)". I also thought that "アリス九" didn't have much of an impact, so I just added a "號" to the end. Because it seemed like a strong word. Even I was quite proud of myself, to know such an old word like "號".
Now that you think about it, in 2004, when the band had formed, you had already changed your name twice, from "アリス九" to "アリス九號" to "アリス九號.".
All: Oh!
So in your 5th year, you changed your name from "アリス九號." to "Alice Nine". What were your activities like in the time since joining the company and changing your band name to an English stylisation?
Nao: The feeling was different from what it is now. At the time, just by being able to film music videos and being able to record in a proper studio made me think "Wow, we're like pros. It really feels like we're doing music". I was glad.
Were there any dramatic changes since joining the company?
Tora: At the time, there were lots of magazines, and we pretty much appeared in all of them and more.
"All of them and more"? It was that many?
Hiroto: We even appeared in extra editions of magazines.
Show: We appeared in loads of magazines.
Hiroto: Around our third year, whenever we released an album or single, we would be in all the magazines in the music magazine section at bookstores. On top of that, we were also in idol magazines that other bands weren't in.
You were!
Tora: So the toughest thing was that for about 20 days of the month, we would be doing photoshoots for magazines. Since we also had to go on tour with that kind of schedule, the toughest thing was not having the time for band practice, the most important thing. The band was still not a cohesive one, and from such an early stage, where it wasn't as though we had a song that was killing the charts, we were already rushing forward into that kind of thing. So at any rate, we did photoshoots, to the point where I didn't know if we were a band or models.
Show: Just around our third year, the term "Neo Visual-kei" was coined. The NHK music show "MUSIC JAPAN" held a "Neo Visual-kei Midsummer Party", and that was suddenly the trend at the time. We thought that we had to secure a spot there. It was that kind of time. I think that is also why we were appearing a lot in media. So the phrase "Neo Visual-kei" was coined, and when people wondered "So which bands are Neo Visual-kei?", it was our seniors Plastic Tree and MUCC. But don't you get the feeling that if kids like us were to actually go in there to compete with them, we would get roasted? So that was the trend at the time, and for better or for worse, we were there at around the same time. In the world of entertainment, there are limitations to the things that someone can make by themselves. HYDE had once said to me "The world needs trends too". I think that truly amazing people can read the trends of the time and get on board with that. But for us, we went ahead recklessly, and before we knew it, we found ourselves in that trend.
Without you even knowing it.
Show: Right. To begin with, when we started our band, it was at the time where "Visual-kei" was losing its popularity. So I didn't even imagine that we would be appearing on TV or playing at Nippon Budokan8. It's just that at that time, this was the trend.
Along with the birth of the phrase "Neo Visual-kei", things were stirring up in the world and in the music scene.
Show: Yes. BAROQUE was an early adapter, and bands such as ourselves, SID, the GazettE, and NIGHTMARE were being labelled as "Neo Visual-kei". That era ended fantastically with Golden Bomber. I think they were able to bring a close to the era because they are the real deal, and not just copying our seniors.
I see. Even among the "Neo Visual-kei" bands, was it the company that thought to set you apart from the rest by really putting it out there that in terms of looks, you were like an "idol band" or "princes"?
Show: There was not even a single time where the company could properly control us.
Saga: We had good looks. Compared to other bands. So even if we didn't put it out there, it just appeared that we did. That's all it was. Maybe the company or record label wanted to put our looks at the forefront, but it's not as though we purposely did that kind of thing. So that it appeared that way was only natural.
Show: So from then on, we just owned it, like "Yeah, that's right". For example, it had taken us 14 years to be able to use the "prince" thing of our own volition.
Until at your 14th anniversary live, "ALICE IN CASTLE -Princes from the Stars and the Castle of the Moon", where the five of you played the part of princes.
Show: Yes, that's right.
Nao: But for me, back then, hearing people calling us a good-looking band made me think "Oh, so I'm good-looking too?". It made me so happy I was smirking all the time.
Show: Even back then, Nao was famous for being the good-looking drummer of Fatima. Apart from YOSHIKI, who is in a whole other dimension, there weren't really any other star drummers.
Even if you didn't voluntarily use it to your advantage, between yourselves, were you at least a little bit aware from the beginning that the band was full of good-looking people?
Show: Isn't that something we all instinctively felt? In Saga's previous band, he was so much more cooler than the other members. Even with Tora, when I first saw him, there were only fans on the stage left side, where Tora was. At the time, he was working up the crowd by hopping from side to side though. I was confused by that.
Even though he was cool, you didn't understand the point of doing that.
Tora: Nahahahaha.
Show: But I thought "Wow" (laughs). Hiroto being Hiroto, he was a guitarist that stood even further in front of the vocalist and stood out.
Saga: Even though the vocalist was singing, he would be shouting in an excessively loud voice "Let's go!", and be making gestures.
Wahahaha. So what did you think when you first saw Show?
Tora: He was cool. I remember him singing from a really low position. He was pretty much singing from the ground. I thought "What's with that guy?".
Nao: Really?
Show: I've never talked about this before, but I liked FANATIC♢CRISIS' RYUJI The most. He would spread out his legs really far and play from a low position. So I sang with that kind of style in mind.
Saga: I want to see that. Him singing from really close to the ground.
Tora: But when it's like that, it's Visual-kei but also not Visual-kei. I felt something with Show that I had never felt before, and I thought he was really cool.
Saga: The first impression I got from Show was "his face doesn't match his voice". From his face, I thought he was the cute type, but when I heard his voice, he wasn't like that at all. Since his voice was deep and dark, I thought it was interesting.
Show: I think what Saga and Tora saw was when I was in my very first band. Up until then, I had never been in a Visual-kei band before, let alone seen one play before. I had look at the "looking for members" section in "Rockin f (technical music magazine)", and applied to be in a SlipKnot copyband. That was a band where they said to me "All you have to do is go nuts. Don't worry about the singing"...... Are we even going to be able to talk about our 15th year at this pace?
Tora: That's because you just took us back in time again (laughs).
I do want to ask about those times again. When the five of you came together, what ideas did you have about the kind of musical direction you would take?
Saga: I get the feeling that we didn't do what everyone else at the time was doing. That's why from the very beginning, we had a lot of songs that emphasized the singing.
Tora: I might have even talked about it.
Hiroto: So he took the lead and went to go sell his 7-string guitar. And instead, he went and bought a Clapton model guitar and said "We should play the kind of music you can play with this guitar".
Nao: Wow.
Tora: I thought that this wasn't the kind of band that needed a 7-string guitar.
When did you think that?
Tora: When it was time to stand on stage, everyone was shining brightly. It was at that time. At first, I thought it would be better for me to watch things from the back, so when we formed the band, I used to stand where Saga stands now. My personality is not the type to want to put myself out there, so my approach was "I'll just stand back here, and all of you can go to the front". So when I watched the band from that position, I thought that we didn't need a 7-string guitar. It would be better for us to do upbeat songs.
Is that so? So let's move on from when the band formed. During the band's 5th year, why did you change the band stylization from "アリス九號." to the English stylization "Alice Nine"?
Show: We had intended to change the band stylization to "Alice Nine" in 2005, but at the time, the company was against it. So in 2009, we were finally about to get our way. That's all.
What were activities like after you changed the stylization to "Alice Nine"? You also played at Nippon Budokan for the very first time in 2011.
Show: To be honest, we were not able to play at Budokan when the band was at peak popularity. Our peak popularity was around our 4th year. After that, when we left KING RECORDS, which we had been signed to since the beginning, we took a break and lost many fans. I want to let everyone know that you shouldn't take a break, if possible (laughs). Since 2007, having been dragged to the center stage as a Neo Visual-kei band, we were led by the nose by the adults and changed record labels twice. We even reached the decision to leave our management company, and we suffered quite a lot of hardships.
In terms of public image, it doesn't seem like you are a band that had quite a lot of hardships, though.
Nao: That's certainly true. That's how people tend to think of us. Although I do think it's because when we debuted, we rushed straight ahead without any struggles.
Show: Maybe so. For me, even though I'm a vocalist, I was actually better at things other than singing. Although I think the members accepted me because of the way I carried myself on stage, to be completely honest, I was at the level where I needed to become a professional singer. I was a strategist and a designer, but as a musician, when you looked underneath the surface, I had no self-confidence whatsoever. I had lost the power to express things. Also as a band, the adults had started saying things to us like "Write that kind of song" or "Write this kind of song", or "Get a composer to write you a hit". At the time, Saga had said "No, we'll write it ourselves", and the songs he wrote while giving a big "fuck you" to the adults was "JEWELS" and "RAINBOWS". It was from then that this feeling was born that we're not just pretty faces, and that to a certain extent, we had a kind of spirit as a rock band. But still, singing was very difficult for me. Unless you're a person that has liked singing from a young age, and keeps listening to your own voice, critiquing yourself saying "If I did this, I'll be able to sing better", and do it for a long time, you shouldn't become a professional singer. Because singing really is difficult.
But that said, since quitting the company, you've made leaps and bounds as a vocalist.
Show: Now I know how to practice, but back then, I didn't even know how to practice, and I think my singing was plain awful (awkward smile). But what's amazing about the members is that they never once said to me "It's because of your awful signing that we never made it big".
Wow. That's a nice story. I get the feeling that's another reason why the band was able to keep on doing this for 15 years.
Nao: I don't really compliment people, but I think that Show's voice is one of a kind, and the best. I thought that from the beginning.
Hiroto: I thought the same when the band had formed. Even if there are things like technique and pitch, you cannot change the voice itself.
You must be happy to hear that, Show.
Show: All of the members are wonderful people. I think that that's another reason why the band was able to continue. However, one thing I will mention is that after our first time playing at International Forum Hall A, all Nao had said to me was "Show, let's do our best, okay?" (laughs).
Nao: I didn't mean it like that~! I didn't mean just you, but as a band, we should do our best.
Nao was crying backstage after the show was over. What was behind those tears?
Nao: Up until then, we were doing things without any reservation, and I thought that we were perhaps too flippant about it. Those were tears of me reflecting on ourselves, that we should have put more effort into it.
Show: Forum Hall A painfully lays it bare. The upper floors were pitch black. At the time, only about 2700 people had come to see us (the hall fits 5000 people). Seeing that would want to make anyone want to cry.
Nao: It was simply frustrating.
Tora: I have poor eyesight, so I didn't realize it at all.
Nao: Gahahaha!
Hiroto: I thought that the scene in front of us was reality, and accepted that reality. I thought that this was the result of everything we had done up until then.
Saga: From the beginning, I thought there was no way we would fill up the hall. Despite that, truth be told, we were about to play there for two consecutive days. Looking at it objectively, I thought the people around us were acting strange. I thought "Is filling up the hall such an easy feat?". In time, the two consecutive shows was changed to just one show. It was then that things had stopped for me. The vigour we had since forming the band stopped and we came back to reality. It was there that I felt the sense of danger, that we were in a bad spot.
I see. So how did the band recover from that?
Saga: I thought that all we could do is write proper songs, that we had to draw out the charm of our band more. I saw the reality that we could not get any more fans just by having pretty faces. Even with practice, it's not quite what Show was talking about, but without knowing if what we were doing was right or wrong, we kept practicing. The lesson we took from Forum Hall A was that with practice, it was something that had to be done seriously. That's why I wasn't sad that we didn't fill out the entire hall. It was more like "Well, of course not". It was around here. I was the one to wake up from that dream first. My eyes were wide open.
So that was the fork in the road where Alice Nine awoke as a rock band.
Saga: That's right.
Nao: Because of that exprience, from then on, I practiced like crazy. I was in the studio so often to the point you wondered if I lived in the studio. So I think that empty Forum Hall provided the band with good motivation.
After that, when the band was welcoming its 10th year anniversary, you graduated from your management company and started to do things on your own.
Saga: We were indebted to the company, but when we considered our life from that point onwards, we were no longer able to leave everything to them. When looking at our future, we thought that we had to do this ourselves.
Show: Because we thought that humans don't grow and don't have a future if they don't take on risks. That company had taken good care of us, as if we were family. After leaving, it made me think once again that they are a good company, but at the time, we chose to take on the risks. That we can do activities like this now is the socially correct thing, I think.
After graduating from the company, you changed the band name from "Alice Nine" to "A9", and restarted activities. What do you think about that now?
Show: We didn't want to fight with our previous company, so we proceeded logically and changed our name to "A9". Even now, I think that we made the right choice.
Where did the name "A9" come from?
Saga: The phrase "A9" was already there before we even became A9. I don't remember who said it though.
Hiroto: At first, that's what our Chinese fans called us.
Nao: Oh.
Hiroto: So when it came to changing our band name, we didn't want to change it to something that was competely unrelated, so we settled on "A9".
Even after becoming A9 and going independent, you were faced with many difficulties.
Show: If we were to go into detail about that, it would take another 3 hours (laughs). We had a lot of hardships, but now we are at our best. I also feel very grateful that the media will still cover us, like right now. Because this is a chance for us to present ourselves to the people who watch us from a distance, like "A9 is Alice Nine, right? They're still around?". Since going independent, we had met L'Arc~en~Ciel's Ken, and regarding what we could contribute to society, we started to think again about what our strengths were. From the dilemma that we felt about being called "princes" or an "idol band" when we debuted, we accepted the fact, and we started to think about how we could use this to make people happy, and what we could offer to add flair to the audience's experience. Those are the kind of activities we are doing now.
Among those activities, you showed us many surprising performances, such as going back to your roots of a blending of Eastern and Western styles, setting aside your instruments on stage to dance, and even trying out acting. I get the feeling that through this, it has revitalized the image of the band amongst fans.
Show: There was that. Also, we want to play at event lives, but I think that we became a band where it was difficult for others to invite us to play with them. Since we know what our strengths are and we are using it. That is why we decided to host an event ourselves for our 15th year anniversary. If you are reading this and want to see what we are like, I ask that you do come see us.
The A9 that knows what its strengths are now, and is using it.
Show: Yes, because as a Visual-kei band that was around in the 2000s, we can now do our activities properly considering how we can make the audience happy. Be it at Hibiya or Studio Coast9, I would like for them to come see us.
I think that wanting to make the audience happy is connected to that slogan the band had since the beginning, of "the customer is king". Where did this complete approach of "fans first" come from?
Show: It's not as though we want to flatter them (the fans). I think the true essence of Visual-kei is "entertainment". In a different format to the Visual-kei that YOSHIKI had invented, if our generation were to reinterpret Visual-kei and give it a definition, it would be for us to get to the venue much earlier than normal rock bands to do our makeup and to create and wear non-normal outfits to express a world view for the sake of the audience. By doing so, I think that the attitude of entertaining the audience as a part of show business is an element of Visual-kei that allows it to also compete on the world stage. I think that is perhaps the conclusion we reached after these 15 years.
Finally, let me ask about what is on our minds the most. You added the interesting title of "A9 LAST ONEMAN" to the tour that leads to your show at Hibiya. What is the meaning behind that?
Show: I think that you can pretty much guess what that means from the mood of this interview, where there isn't a single indication that we're going to disband (laughs).
1 Album released in November 2007 under the band name アリス九號. 2 Album released in January 2009 under the band name アリス九號. 3 A livehouse in Meguro, Tokyo. It is known as one of the "holy places" for Visual-kei bands. 4 A relatively expensive bbq meat franchise. 5 Literally translates to "Alice Nine", but stylistically different to the actual band name "アリス九號." 6 A Japanese Visual-kei magazine (no longer in publication). 7 A livehouse in Takadanobaba, Tokyo. It is another "holy place" for Visual-kei bands, and being able to play here is like a milestone for bands. 8 A large indoor arena in Chiyoda, Tokyo. 9 A large concert venue in Shinkiba, Tokyo.

Special vk moments in Japan (2019)
After 2 1/2 years I returned to Japan. Mostly this time I met friends and went to concerts. Since I would like to make my tumblr a bit more personal again I decided to text a bit about this and write down about the moments and concerts that touched me the most. Well, actually I write a few things about all concerts I went to this time but.. you will notice which one touched me the most xDD If you want to know more about one or anything else.. please just send me a message ^^
First of all, my first concert after returning to Japan: an Arlequin oneman! I actually wanted to see Royz live that day but ticket prices for fan-sold tickets were ridiculous, even for bad numbers. Regular kombini-tickets had soo bad numbers at that time that it was like... standing in the hallway. And travelling to that city where they played would have cost me too much for it being worth standing in the hallway. So I wondered if there is any other concert I might be interested in to go instead and i decided 3 days before the concert that I will stay in Osaka to see Arlequin live instead of Royz in Hamamatsu. Other way I wouldn’t have seen Arlequin while I would see Royz at their 10th anni. So, Arlequin was so much better than expected! It sounds mean but let me tell you: I DID enjoy every of their taiban/twoman I went to so much. Just for some reason the oneman I went to in 2015.. wasn’t the best live ever. Some parts of the live were so boring?! So I realized, maybe Arlequin just isn’t a oneman band but a taiban band for me. Because their taibans were so damn fun! Anyway, I went to see them live in Sep 2019 because i wanted to see them and it was the only chance for that trip! And it was SO good. It felt like they improved a lot - performance-wise and setlist-wise. Aki’s talk improved a lot. He got so emotional?! --> I got so emotional?!? They even made me cry at one point.... I was like wtf. But somehow... it might also because it made me feel like “Damn. I guess I forgot what it feels like. This is it. Live houses are truly my home.”???? “Utopia” was really great because we all messed up the “lalala”-part... 3 times. We could do the melody but not the very ending of it but Aki didn’t want to have any of that shit and let us do it over and over again WITHOUT SHOWING US THE CORRECT MELODY!! It just broke when we didn’t know how to continue. It was so funny actually xD Embarassing and funny. In the end he helped us. I’m still a bit sad I couldn’t see a small live house live of Royz but I am very happy I went to see Arlequin again. I’m fine with how things turned out!
Next was kizu-DIAURA-twoman (with gulu gulu as opening act). It was fun! I wanted to see kizu live so much ^__^ And I’m happy I finally did because them and arlequin are the bands I listen to the most during the past 1-2 years. But after them DIAURA played and I realized how high-quality DIAURA’s performances are xDD They are so GOOD! I took my not-vk-fan-friend with me and she enjoyed it too ^___^ And I got MASTER’s ゴミ aka water bottle.
Then I saw alice nine live?!? Spontanously decided. The live was nice. I’m so happy i FINALLY saw them. After 12 years. And they played shunkashuuto with Tora singing (... trying to sing. xDD). NOSTALGIA kicked through!!!
Then I went to see ACME at a taiban. It was my first live of them and it was great! I ended up in Saizen.. and need to write about this in another entry because holy shit.
GUILD was special. I saw them spontaneously back in 2015 and 2014. once as oneman, once as 2man and once at a taiban. Before that I saw them in 2010 in Europe without actually knowing them. It was 1 year after they formed. So.. it’s quite interesting to see them every 4 years xDD I see their improvement. Their change. The live was very nice and funny. I went with 2 friends. One of them I saw GUILD in 2010 together with. I really like GUILD’s songs and enjoyed the live a lot since.. they were on hiatus for quite some time so there aren’t TOO many songs I don’t know. And even the new songs I knew more or less xD It was a lot of nostalgia. And a lot of fun. I missed GUILD and I’m glad they are back.
We spontaneously saw LEZARD and DaizyStripper live next. I was so so happy to see Sora again. I didn’t since I went to my last ALIVE live in 2015. So it was really nice.... I loved to see him having fun!! I loved to see him being in a band he enjoys and belongs to. I’m really glad he seems fine ^^ That was all that counted for me that day! And Daizy were more fun than I expected. Saw them at an open air live in 2014 and it was.. okay. But this 2man was a blast. I was surprised!
Gazette tourfinal at Yokohama Arena was a cool experience but we stood/sat quite in one of the highest rows and were far (not the most in the back but far) from stage, so.. well, yeah. It was a nice experience but I guess I prefer smaller lives?? Best moment was probably when Kai shout without microphone xD his usual “kakattekoi!!” could be heard EVERYWHERE and I was like “so this is what it sounds like live.” and loved it.
One of the lives that made me the happiest was HELLO. taiban. I wanted to see Aki live, my ALIVE boy xD But then I noticed that Nao (ex-ALIVE as well), would be support guitarist for that live and it couldn’t be better??? I ended up in saizen kami2 because the saizen girl wasn’t there for ALIVE and nobody wanted to be in saizen for the support guy and she BEGGED me to be in saizen when she found out I considered being there. So I was 1st row almost in front of Nao. It was soo great ._. I had perfect view on him and Aki and since at least Nao knew I would be there...... Not gonna brag stuff like “omg his smile was so cute T___T” ... but I loved seeing him smile at me. I loved seeing him kinda happy? He looked happy at least ^^ Nao isn’t in a band anymore but I think he does miss that time. At least it looked like that xD I don’t think they have THAAAT many fans. I mean... saizen was free right of me. But yeah, those were the support-spots, so maybe it was because of that xDD Anyway, I loved it. I loved to see them live again. I would love to see them live once again. I’m really so so happy I could go to this live. I mean, I didn’t know the furi well but I had a great Aki-gya next to me who was sooo nice and tried to help me and showed me the furi clearly while doing them during the songs. She even gave me their new CD as gift afterwards! It was only a taiban, so it was very short and I waited through 6 other bands of which I cared for only one but I definitely count this concert as one of the best during that trip. One of the few ones that made me the happiest. Because I could see the boys of the band smile that once were my (closest to-)honmei.
Another highlight of the trip was R-Shitei’s concert in Mito. I was sick and my voice was GONE that day. Really. Gone. I don’t know if this ever happened to me before but ... I couldn’t have ANY conversation. Anyway, the live was really fun!! And... at one point Mamo pointed at us saying that foreigners are here too today and if we’re having fun........ I screamed inside for two reasons: - First.. mamo-nii-chan noticed us ûu ..... xDDDD - Second: “... I NEED to answer but what if my voice isn’t existent again??” And my friend can’t speak Japanese so she had no idea what was going on...... I shout a bit during the live and sometimes it started working again a bit, sometimes it just died right away, so I took my chances and shout as loud as I could “Haaaaai!!” and ended it here because it came out fine and I didn’t want to tempt fate... xDDD I also met a friend from my year in Japan - by chance! She actually said she won’t go but she ended up there anyway xD Nice girl! She helped me with quite a few important things back then.
Then Royz’ 10th anni. When I went to their 5th anni I told myself I will be back for the 10th one. And I made it. 5 years ago I had no idea where I would be in 2019 and how my life would be and if Royz was even still around. But I told myself... if there is any chance for me to go to their 10th anniversary I would do it. I decided for the time of this trip because of this concert. Tbh, I was a bit pissed it was the very first time they made the anniversary live their tour final and also the very first time they held their anniversary in Tokyo. They always held it in their hometown Osaka. But maybe that time is over now. I wanted it to be in Osaka. But anyway...... You have to go with the flow? The live was nice! And the song Anniversary made me cry. I love the lyrics so much!? Also, they talked about Kazuki and his messages that morning. And ACROSS WORLD made me the happiest. It was the last song (of course?) and I was so happy... And seeing the people around me smile like crazy made me even happier xD I know I am not the best Royz fan anymore. I know maybe someone who is more of a fan should lead Royz-yade. I lost them a bit during the past years. But they are still awesome and I still enjoy their music and their concerts. I have so many memories connected to them and I won’t give up on them ^_^ I still love them. I am still happy for every step they make. For every goal they archive. Also, I talked to Kento!? xDDD Pretty boy.
R-Shitei in Wakayama was fun but Mito was more fun xD So no real review here. Except for... they played THREE ENCORE!
Last but not least, ACME. Nice concert! But the fans were strange... Yes, it was a small concert but nobody really called their names like bangya use to. Nobody shout. Many didn’t dance along. It was very strange?!? The band itself was great though! The songs are great, they are funny, their performance is good - and SHOGO is desperately afraid of guitar solo... xDD
I said last but not least, but actually... there was another concert xDD I went to see ALTL. It’s a tiny idol group with bandmen, one of them I like from his previous bands xD So.. actually I wanted to go with a friend but she didn’t make it so I went alone. And it was SO strange. It was in a club/small live house thingy and it was so strange to be there for an idol group??? The fans were different. The atmosphere was different. THE MUSIC WAS DIFFERENT XDDD But it was fun in the end? Way more than I thought. And you could take 2shots with your favorite member and talk a bit. I took.. 3 ûu” for 3000 Yen xD I enjoyed it but I felt lost xD I mean, I’ve been to many vk concerts alone. Also to very very small ones with only like 15 people. But at least that is my scene ^^” At least I knew what to do and what to expect. With that idol concert I was completely lost xDDD But I’m really glad I still went!

「Royz THE BEST2009-2019」 「TRACKS」
Subaru’s LINE entry 2019/4/30 01:52
We’ve finished all 8 concerts of our best album tour “TRACKS” without any incidence. Thanks to everyone who got in touch with us during the tour.
And well, since the tour has ended I thought of talking a bit about our best album “Royz THE BEST2009-2019“
About one year ago (it’s unsure though) we’ve started working on this constantly. We’ve waited for the right timing and on 4/3 we could finally let it out into this world. You’ve already listened to it, haven’t you?
The compilation consists of the rerecorded version of our lead tracks from when we were still five members, of the lead tracks of the time after we became four members, of bonus tracks and the songs No Fate and Anniversary that weren’t featured on any CD before. Also, a rerecorded and rearranged version of kuroageha, marble palette and toumei na yuki.
To be honest, when in a meeting the topic of releasing a best album came up I was absolutely for releasing it but I was against rerecording the songs.
You wonder why? Because in the past I didn’t love the rerecordings of the artists I like 笑 Of course I thought that they are good but... the bad sound quality, the insufficient skills, the fact that it was still in the process of being properly formed ... I think it’s good that way. Rather than wanting it to be better I appreciate the memories that come up when listening to these songs.
Sure, I thought [the new versions] were good but it’s also hard. We became adults... That’s what I also think [with a sad feeling]. I relive those memories and they take me back to that place, to the one of that smell or how I was looking up at the sky from that window while listening to that song. They made me think: “Let’s try giving my best again!” That was good. That time.
That’s why it’s not good or bad. “That” became my companion. That’s why I hate the feeling of exchanging “that” with “this”. “That” is hard to explain. But I’d like you to understand. This isn’t the first time we rerecorded songs. I just thought it’s different when it’s for a best album.
But it’s also a practical thing. Around the time we released CORE Kazuki left and Kuina became the only guitarist. Desperately and with pain in his hands he said “I can do it!”. I think he played a lot of the guitar without us even realizing. I barely tell him he goes against the flow but that’s one great point of him. I also think that it was difficult for Koudai to become the only person on the left side of the stage, also in a negative way. I don’t think we could do anything about it but when we went on stage the people in front of us were almost all crying. There were a lot of painful concerts. And during all that we could work out who we really are. Like... I could come to say that this is my place. Nobody can end this here.
I think Tomoya had to bear a lot of weight as leader. His character is lively and positive, so usually he always seems to be fine but I really don’t think that this is always the case. There are many people who always seem fine but cry in secret. Please keep an eye on the people around you!
Our manager was desperate, too. Worrying about Royz.
We are clumsy, so there were also times when we talked past each other. But Royz was still loved. But you all know that, don’t you?
Rey who joined as support member also saved us a lot. I think it would have been impossible without him.
But for Kuina the hurdle was too high and we became a band with four members. The label owner, the label and label mates... if I start talking about it there is no end, so I will stop here. I don’t really like talking about the past and this moving story and already got lost in writing about it but this is an obvious fact. The longer we’re active the more people are there who don’t know about all this.
“But somehow the four-member Royz is cool, isn’t it?” We could gather new power for this. This prologue got so long... But that’s why in general our songs are for five people. It’s not true for all though. We’ve also synchronizing more of the songs. I started to understand more about putting things in order and the timing. On our CDs as well as when we perform our songs live. That’s what you do when you decide on keep on going.
That’s why while accepting [to rerecord new versions] I thought that when we do it you will understand it. The start that I was thinking about it and getting prepared for it was that I wondered with which feeling I would sing these songs if we rerecord them.
I think what I wrote until here was quite long-winded but when I listened to our first rerecordings of eve:r and ACROSS WORLD I thought “no no, the rerecordings are so good!” ( 笑)
Yeah~ these 10 years were more serious than I thought. Or not? We held concerts step by step and even though I thought I got used to listen to our songs they sounded completely different after rerecording them. We became adults, didn’t we? That’s what I think. The songs in the past were cute, so I like them so much. Especially songs like haru no yoru no yume. It was something we could only do back then the way we did it. Back then we gave our very very best together.
But in the end, the new one is good. It’s not wrong to say that even though I didn’t like to say it. I thought that we’ve changed without changing. That’s what I realized before creating this new version.
And also, we thought if it’s possible to release “Anniversary” on the best album then we should do it. That’s what we decided the first time we performed it (was it 4 or 5 years ago? It’s unsure).
I also came to like No Fate a lot. In the end the lyrics are very formal (笑) There are songs for which we used downtuning, we created the songs in a way that it fits for one guitar since we became four members. We have grown up, so I think we express that image now with more adult-like clothes. But on the contrary there are also songs that were sung in a fresh way. If I start talking about details now then here as well there is no end, so please just listen to them a lot! I know you do though! Please try to feel it. It would be nice if you can enjoy it double as much as before. And please tell me whatever you think about it in fanletters, fanmails, replies or letters. In the end I’m the happiest when you’re happy.
So, we released that album and went on our TRACKS tour to Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka and Nagoya like weekend heros. It was fun to see you all having fun, you who haven’t seen us in these clothes live, who know us only from music videos on youtube or from photos. And everyone who did see us back then probably felt nostalgic. This was also an opportunity to meet old friends again. Speaking of that, this timing for releasing our best album... there might also be a lot of people who came to like us just recently. You probably have all different thoughts about it. In the end, we wanted to grab everyone and everything and make it a rehearsal for our 10th anniversary live that we’re aiming at. With that in mind we decided on this title “TRACKS” [like “cart track”]. During this TRACKS tour more than in anyone else there was something big inside of me that started to bloom. Right afterwards I was asked for an Rock&Read interview and we talked about many things. I could make many dreams come true.
No, this is still a talk of a dream that is lying ahead. Way before. I wonder how it will be in the end. That’s why even though I talk so much about it I don’t know what strength we will have. Whatever it is it feels like you always lose to the things you said before, so I will talk about it again when time comes. But for me the things we could accomplish were really huge. It’s painful to just keep on running without knowing where you go. I think if you do that your heart will shatter for sure. Even at times when I didn’t know where I was running, it was a huge help to know my goal. In that story about the dream that is lying ahead there are Kuina and Koudai and Tomoya. Also our manager and the staff. That’s why they have to be there. More than anything, I want them to be happy. Starting with the members, I want to become a person that can shoulder also the lives of people around me. A person that other people want to have around and about whom they are happy to have spend their live together with. That’s what I want to become. I want people to think about me: “I’m happy I picked him.”
When I think back of this tour it makes me remember how they are with me for already more than 9 years and that we’ve appreciated all that together. That’s what this talk is all about. This isn’t amazing and I don’t want to talk about it in a self-satisfied way. But it is cool. Just, for me this is something big. Because I’m a vocalist.
It feels like until now I’ve only lived for myself. But now, for the first time, I’ve hoped for the happiness of other people from the bottom of my heart. I realized that this has become my greatest joy. Maybe thoughts are smaller now. Maybe it’s because so many big things have happened around me. And that’s why, in the end, I want to become a person that can pull them with me [=motivate them] in an extraordinary way.
There are people who think “I can’t do this.” or “This live is shit.” But only by continuing this band there were times, when, rather as bandman but as person the way of seeing life has changed. I’m sure the other members have experienced it as well. That’s the nature of words. This happens if you choose tomorrow. If you believe in Royz. That’s the way I am.
That’s the sproud that started blooming thanks to this tour. And I’m also really happy that we could become a band that can release a best album. The atmosphere of the tour was awesome and great and it was an awesome month. It was SO much fun! Thank you so much.
Well well, IGNITE was released on May 1st, the day when heisei turned to reiwa. We uploaded the IGNITE MV before but it would be great if you looked forward to the coupling songs. We can grow even more. If we were satisfied and stopped here we wouldn’t be able to show all the hope to the people who come to like us from here on. We became a band like that.
This is an unorganized long entry, as always, but thank you for reading until here. It seems like it will be a good 10th year. Well then, talk to you in the next era! (so cool)

Harmony Magazine #5 ~ Wakana Solo Interview
Note: Here’s my translation of Wakana’s solo interview from the latest Harmony issue. Since this interview was done back in September, it mostly focuses on her symphony concert in August but there is some mention of her solo tour and her song writing experience as well. All in all, it’s quite nice and it provides some insight. Without further ado, let’s get to it.
Fan club members will have received this issue shortly after the end of Wakana’s first solo tour. However, for this interview we will wind back the clock a little in order to get a proper understanding of how Wakana felt performing all by herself at her very first symphony concert. In addition to that we will get a glimpse at her thoughts and feelings shortly before the start of her solo tour.
The current condition interview
◆ We are doing this interview in mid September. You are in the midst of rehearsals and meetings for your upcoming solo tour? Yes, that’s true. For me it’s obviously the first time doing a solo tour but this is also a new territory for all the staff members around me, there are so many new things that come along with solo tours ... You simply can’t know everything on your first try. At first I was all ready to take a step ahead and I thought I should really try and experience this myself. Now I am at a point where I have lost track of what I know and what I don’t know *laughs*
◆ So a solo tour is really different? When the three of us were together it was Kalafina’s assigned role to bring Kajiura-san’s music to life with our singing and our harmony. In the beginning Kalafina was an existence of its own with an established image and then before we knew it, we had already debuted... that’s kinda what it felt like. For the three of us it was all about catching up with Kalafina, there was a strong sense of trying to live up to that image. But Kalafina was always ahead of us. I think in some ways we were just always pursuing that image of Kalafina. That was our challenge, it was our reason for being and it was also a constant guide. But now that I am singing aone, I can’t just take that image as it is and simply adopt it for myself. But I also don’t want to destroy the image that everyone has in their mind. On top of that I am in the middle of trying to find the right way for me, I am wondering which roads to take to embark on a new journey as Wakana.
◆ You are writing your own lyrics now, aren’t you? Yes, since around March/April I have been taking up that challenge. It was my very first time writing my own lyrics for a song so I am not 100% happy with the outcome. I kept wondering about things like, “which words do I best put into this short 5-note phrase?” For example, you might think "♪ I love you/Aishiteru" would fit well but I kept thinking, “do you really wanna sing these words right here at this point? Is this really the most suitable place for these words in this song? Wouldn’t they fit much better somewhere else?” All those thoughts kept spinning around in my head so I had a very hard time finishing the lyrics.
◆ So far it was the most important aspect of your work to express the songs you had been given with your singing. Now that you have started writing lyrics you have to create something from scratch all by yourself. You are expanding an already existing world, you are digging deeper, you are finding new ways of interpretation, I think this is on a whole new level of difficulty. I have really tried my best to put all the things I wanted to convey into words. The compositions that have been written for me as solo artist are all amazing so little by little I would like to work on them hoping to not ruin their charming nature.
◆ During your upcoming tour will we be able to hear some of the songs that you have written the lyrics for? I am in the midst of working out a plan together with my staff members who keep cheering me on. At the end of my symphony concert which was held back in August I got to perform “Toki wo Koeru Yoru ni”, the first song for which I had written the lyrics. In the questionnaires for that live I received lots of messages telling me, “I would love to listen to more songs like that!” That was very encouraging. For my concert in August I sang a lot of Kalafina songs, by doing that I think I was able to show myself and the audience how far I had come, it was proof of my past experiences and everything I had accumulated up till that point. But I didn’t reach my goal with that, I feel like my solo tour will be a crossover between personal parts that make me who I am and Kalafina.
◆ Well then, let’s go back in time a little, please tell us about the Symphony Concert that you mentioned earlier. Well....I was super nervous ~ !! It had always been my dream to perform together with an orchestra and I wanted to make this a really enjoyable experience for the audience so I felt like I had to do my very best! Because of that I was beyond nervous *laughs*
◆ How did it feel to work together with musicians of a foreign orchestra? Everyone was incredibly kind and openhearted. The conductor was very accommodating, he would tell me, “please feel free to make requests so our musical performance makes it easier for you to sing.” I am very grateful for his help. It was my first time singing alongside an orchestra so I had lots of difficulties. Since the musical performance would be following the lead of my singing I felt like the first thing I had to do was establish my very own tempo, a tempo I felt comfortable with. In the past when we were performing “bandstyle” most of our songs were all about synchronising, if a song was 4 1/2 minutes long then we would have to sing at a speed that would make us finish in that exact time. I realised it’s a completely different experience when you are performing with an orchestra.
◆ Each and every sound is created on the spot by a living human being. There are no technical devices intervening .... Well, I had a foot monitor and my microphone but aside from that, there were no electrical instruments.
◆ Speaking of which, I think you mentioned in one of your MCs that you didn’t use ear monitors that day. That’s right. I had removed them during my rehearsals and I realised I could sing without them so I wondered if I could also remove them for the actual performance. I decided I wanted to sing while being able to listen to the raw sound of the music around me.
◆ Was it easier to perform like that? It felt really nice to sing like that. You can really hear each and every single sound if you want to. When you are wearing ear monitors you don’t really get to experience the real balance among all the different sounds around you because your ears end up being overwhelmed by the sound that’s coming through the monitors. Sometimes my voice itself would become restricted because I would unintentionally adapt it to the sound ringing in my ears. This time around I was able to listen to the live sound because I was accompanied by an orchestra. It’s different when you are performing with a band and you have drums accompanying you. You can’t really sing without ear monitors in that case because your manner of listening to everything around you is very much affected by this “bandstyle”.
◆ Even though you performed in a classical hall, I feel like it’s probably difficult to focus when so many different instruments are ringing together.... Well, I had the conductor there with me and I was fine as long as I concentrated on the piano, I really tried to let the notes of the piano ring through my body. However, for some parts of “Ashita no Keshiki” the harp’s arpeggio was my only accompaniment so that was really hard! I would always be in too much of a hurry. The follow-up song “I Have a Dream” was also incredibly difficult. We had to practise these two songs again and again during rehearsal.
◆ Oh really? It was very hard but also a lot of fun. Since nothing technical was intervening, I was able to decide everything for myself, when to stop singing, when to pause for a longer time, when to start singing again, I was able to sing while having control over all these things, it was very refreshing to work like that. We as Kalafina did a similar thing for our 10th Anniversary performance of “Hikari Furu”, there were some sections where we were able to sing more or less freely but since we were three people we would still have to somehow adhere to the same tempo or it wouldn’t have made any sense. If you are singing at your own tempo the harmonies just don’t work.
◆ By the way, did you feel nervous walking on stage all by yourself? I was super nervous! *laughs* Truth is, I had felt so much anxiety on that day. After the concert I went to have dinner with two of my managers. We ate some delicious steak and various other things and we had A LOT to drink *laughs* I ate so much that I felt I was about to explode. Surprisingly though, when I stepped on the scale the morning after, I hadn’t gained any weight or body fat. Performances are always burning a lot of energy but this time around I wasn’t even performing all the way through...I guess performing on stage all by yourself consumes a lot more energy than expected...I was quite surprised. *laughs*
◆ It seems like this was a kind of pressure you had not experienced before? Right before the performance lots of people had tried to comfort me but I was just too distracted, I was there in body but not in spirit *wry smile*. You see, when you are standing on stage you feel like the audience is talking about you. *laughs* That is really not the case though! When you are too nervous you are just imagining all these voices.
◆ In the first section both you and the audience seem to have been quite nervous. True. I felt SUPER relieved when I was able to pass the baton to Ryuu-san after finishing my last song of the first section *laughs*.
◆ In the second half you appeared together on stage with Ogawa Mana-san, she was your guest vocalist and she sang together with you, right? It was a huge help to have Mana-chan there with me, singing together with her felt totally different from the first part of the concert where I was singing all by myself, I could literally feel myself becoming more relaxed, that weird tension I felt was slowly dissolving *laughs*. That particular part of the setlist was also really amazing, I was so happy to have this unique experience of getting to perform Hirahara Ayaka-san’s “Jupiter” - an adaptation of Holst’s “Jupiter”.
◆ I feel like there were lots of people in the audience who were listening to Kalafina’s songs and your voice for the very first time. I think you did a great job at conveying the splendor of Kalafina’s music. I am happy you think that way but honestly, after the live was over, I felt like I should have talked so much more about all these songs I sang and the people I performed with. I was way too nervous so I couldn’t really talk as much during the MCs as I had intended to. I really regret that.
◆ You are not just singing alone, you also have to do the MCs all by yourself. In terms of singing, did you feel anything special when you were singing alone? Usually my biggest strength is talking but since I was quite nervous all I was thinking about was my singing. All the power I’d usually use for talking went straight into my singing, I was actually very surprised at myself to hear such a voice coming out of me *laughs*
◆ You were singing in falsetto but you were also using a mixed voice, you reached some really high notes. Actually, this was my first time singing like that, I guess it’s because I am singing alone. When the three of us would sing together we would each have to sing with a powerful voice or it just wouldn’t have worked. When it was first decided that I would be performing together with an entire orchestra, some staff members voiced their concern, they worried whether or not my voice could keep up with all of that. They asked me if I wanted more supporting singers, they could have sung the main melody while I would have been able to focus on the chorus, they came up with various arrangements that would take some of the burden off my shoulders. But during one of our final rehearsals I had the arrangements changed again so I would be singing all the main melodies. In the arrangement they had previously provided for “Musunde Hiraku” I was only singing a small part of the song but I really wanted to convey all of it that’s why I made them change the arrangement completely. This way I would be able to sing each and every line. I was quite surprised that I was able to hold my voice throughout all these songs, I guess maybe it’s because it was such a small amount of songs, there were only 14 songs in total. It was a truly marvelous experience. It showed me that I could actually sing like that.
◆ But it's not like you never felt something similar when the three of you were still singing together, right? Absolutely. When the three of us were singing together we used our best voices so it felt good but those were the voices that would best suit the three of us. Now that I am singing alone I am able to discover new singing styles and a new kind of voice.
◆ it was very refreshing to hear you sing the medium and low range parts, you really managed to convey their depth. I am glad I got to hear that. In “I Have a Dream” there is a part that ends on a very high note and then it transitions into quite a low sections with the lyrics “♪Toki wa yuku~” When I was singing those lines I once again fell in love with this song, it is such a lovely piece. Whenever you hear someone sing this song there’s an immediate sense of comfort.
◆ During your encore you sang the previously mentioned “Toki wo Koeru Yoru ni”, it was your first time performing it, right? With an orchestra at that! *laughs* This song was co-written by a Swedish and Japanese composer (Shusui). That's why it has a slightly Western vibe. I was really happy I got to sing alongside an orchestra. But all the time I kept thinking, “oh no, I wanna change this and that part of the lyrics. Please let me rephrase that again! *laughs*
◆ Oh really? Yes. *laughs* At that point it was still a completely new song for me, I hadn’t even recorded it yet. Also, it was my first time singing my very own lyrics so naturally I was quite embarrassed but everyone in the orchestra was incredibly supportive.
◆ The lyrics were great. Depending on the listener, I think there are many different ways to interpret them, many different sceneries to unravel. I was really nervous to get the lyrics wrong actually, I was hoping I wouldn’t make any mistakes *laughs* Although I was needlessly worrying because no one knew the song anyways *laughs*. But I guess I just wanted it to be as perfect as possible when I sang it in front of the audience.
◆ I am looking forward to hearing it again. I also can’t wait to hear your other new songs. Back in March we had a Kalafina live, then our 10th Anniversary Film got released and we took part in a stage greeting event...since then it’s been more than half a year. Right now I am at a major turning point. From now onwards I want to steadily discover news aspects of myself by moving forward and doing my very best.

NieR:Automata - Dengeki Playstation vol.638 Interview [Ending E spoilers]
WARNING! This interview contains spoilers up to Ending E.
Published on May 11th 2017.
Inquiring the key development staff of the abyss of “Project YoRHa”
NieR:Automata breaks past 1 million copies in sales and continues to be a hot selling hit. A direct interview with the 4 main staff immediately after the concert event! We enquire about the mysteries unraveled in the concert’s Recital Play and the world guide book. We’ll also ask about future grave visitings.
The people we’ll be interviewing
Director, Yoko Taro
From Bukkoro (ブッコロ). Responsible for directing NieR:Automata. Who is finally released from the deadlines for submitting the concert’s Recital Drama script and the world guide book.
Game Designer, Taura Takahisa
From Platinum Games. Responsible for the game design of NieR:Automata. Lately Yoko has been teasing him for his growing accustomization to the media.
Producer, Yosuke Saito
From Square Enix. Responsible for producing NieR:Automata. Kindly watches attentively over Yoko’s recklessness, when he’s gotta do it, he’ll do it.
Composer, Keiichi Okabe
From MONACA. Responsible for the sound production of NieR:Automata. In order to make the Osaka and Tokyo concerts a success, he goes all out with the MONACA staff.
The concert’s existence is thanks to the fans and as the best reward for the developers
Now that a bit of time has passed since the release of the game, I’d like to take this chance to ask you of various spoilers… Since time is restricted today, I’ll have Yoko give his comments on the next day to supplement your impressions of today’s very first NieR:Automata concert, as well as future plans for the game.
Yoko: I see, acknowledged.
With that said, I’d like to truly congratulate you on the realization of today’s concert. What are your impressions now that the first performance, the Osaka performance has ended?
Okabe: Speechless. The progress for the concert this time was really cutting it close, we were doing various adjustments right up to before the concert started. To get it all over with, we had to do our first rehearsal on the day before, let alone the day of the concert. I hope the fans will be satisfied with what we have to offer.
The concert was amazing! I was watching from the audience seat and I could hear a lot of people crying within the seats around me, I was crying too of course.
Saito: I was crying the entire time. To the point that my tear glands are possibly destroyed. Yoko did cry too, right?
Yoko: Yes. I cried without realizing it.
Taura: I was wailing as well. To the point that I ran out of tissue. It was tough from the very beginning, the part I really cried at was the part with Beauvoir. I personally like fast pace music but, the memories of mid-production revived and I couldn’t bear it.
Yoko: You sure those tears were only meant for those hard times? (weakly laughs)
Taura: Not at all… It was definitely a hard time, but in turn it meant that it was memorable. Other than that, the “Song of the Ancients” coupled with the NieR:Automata and NieR Replicant/Gestalt footage of Devola and Popola went really well together.
I’m sure this goes the same for the fans as well, that this concert is the greatest reward for the developers.
Okabe: There’s the Tokyo performance after this and we’d like to show the audience an enhanced performance.
By the way, who coordinated the footage played at the back of the stage?
Okabe: We’ve gotten a vendor this time to coordinate the footage and we’ve made the one in charge have a proper understanding of NieR. The finished product was immensely satisfactory. But of course, Yoko was supervising it all.
Yoko: I only supervised it. I felt that this time, the significance of the Recital Drama was very, very severe. I don’t ever want to put myself in such mayhem ever again.
Saito: Since the limited tickets came with the Recital Drama script, we did intend on sending it out to the customers, “We have till the day itself for the script, so whatever”, is what we’d like to say. Our very own publication department had the color drained from their faces.
Yoko: Saito made the rash decision of making different scripts for each performance….
Saito: What! It was Yoko who said he wanted to do a Recital Drama. (laughs)
Yoko: Well, that’s true but, I didn’t say I’d write a new script for each and every 5 performances you know.
Saito: Well that can’t be helped. It’s tough getting all 5 of the voice actors to come in on the same day, it’s something that needed to be arranged pretty early on. They’re all such busy people you know?
I see, that’s a valid reason.
Saito: At first Yoko wanted to get a boys’ choir in but that was obviously impossible. Even then, we made a move to somehow get a hold of the venue for the concert, as well as sending out offers to the voice actors….. It was a lot of work. Especially for today’s Osaka performance, we were fortunate enough to have 9S’ voice actor, Hanae Natsuki, present. Hanae had “Oha Suta” to attend to early in the morning on the following day, so I thought he’d turn down the offer. But, Hanae himself said he would definitely attend and with that, we got 2B’s voice actor, Ishikawa Yui, and Pod 153’s voice actor, Akiyama Kaoru, together and brought their collaboration to life.
[1] Oha Suta (おはスタ Oha Suta) is a children's TV show which airs in Japan in the morning on Monday to Friday, and it is produced by TV Tokyo.
All that trouble was worth it, the Recital Drama was amazing. 9S kept dying as usual, Hanae seemed a bit pitiful. (weakly laughs)
Saito: I was able to watch the rehearsals on the day of the concert, my first at that. When it comes down to the real thing, they perform amazingly.
I took a look at the scripts for all 5 performances and it was shocking.
Yoko: Was it?
It was full of content that could’ve been put into the game itself. It wasn’t something that you could classify as side story content.
Taura: I know what you mean. Without much thought, I wanted to make a certain scene like this(within the game)….. It came spontaneously to mind.
Right. I wish you guys included it in the game.
Taura: Included in the game, huh.
Yoko: No way, that’s out of the question! (weakly laughs)
Saito: Well, you could say that it’s a concert-only special content. We have a super big surprise prepared for the last day as well. I’m looking forward to seeing the fan’s reactions.
I’m sure the fans are rather delighted with the Recital Drama itself, as well as the supplementary footage.
Saito: Actually, we have made plans to record the audio of the Recital Drama, we might want to release it in some sort of medium.
[2] All the performances’ play audio have been recorded and added to the Blu-ray release of “The Memories of the Puppets”.
It would’ve been ideal to have new in-game footage for the concert.... I think.
Yoko: I see. If Square Enix funds us then, Platinum Games would, well, right?
Taura: Right. If something is given, I can do as much.
Yoko, Taura, you two are making a totally sleazy look. (laughs)
10th anniversary, the next project? Juicy details about the next project’s plans
At any rate, a million copies sold across the world is quite amazing.
Saito: 1 million copies. It’d be nice if it happened but to think that it actually did happen. As for me, I had a secret goal of “pushing Yoko Taro up to the next level”, and I think I’ve managed to accomplish it. With that, the “World of Yoko Taro” is widely spread.
Yoko: But to be rather honest, I think that the hit (NieR:Automata) is a fluke. Even all the staff involved thinks so too.
Saito: A fluke eh… Well, even if we do make another game, it might not sell as well as Automata did.
Have you managed to investigate as to why Automata achieved a million copies?
Yoko: I have already said this several times, it’s all because of Platinum Games’ strength.
Taura: Oh no, no, no, there are a lot of portions that I thought were good though. Character design by Yoshida Akihiko, music done by MONACA that was newly established by Okabe, Yoko’s leadership power and Saito who produced everything with his power, it’s all filled with great things.
Yoko: What’s wrong, Taura? Ever since I pulled you out into the media, since when were you able to make such a counterattack?
Taura: It’s all thanks to Yoko’s direction. You have my gratitude. (grins)
Yoko: That reply, what are you, a monster?! Your training was a total blunder~ (laughs)
But, making such a high quality game with such little resources is truly amazing to be rather honest.
Taura: It’s because the staff all love “NieR” and due to that, we had an unbelieveable amount of horsepower going on. It was truly the fruit of our labour, I don’t think we’ll ever be able to make such a thing ever again. (weakly laughs)
Saito: Probably not. (laughs) To be able to make something that’s so chock full of content is not easy. I was truly grateful for that.
But, with all the new details revealed in the Recital Play and the World Guide Book, having all that plot assembled together, wouldn’t it be possible to make a sequel or a spin-off? For example, the “The Country of Dawn” or “The Dragoon”, you can expand so much on.
Saito: Hold on a minute there. A spinoff? Who’s gonna be the protagonist? Pascal maybe?
Yoko: Well, I can probably make a 2 hour long story for Pascal. I don’t know if there even is demand for it though.
Platinum Games sure has it rough huh.
Taura: Totally… Especially since we’ve canceled a project. Not to mention the DLC we released on May 2nd, the development on the game itself had already wrapped up, so we’ve only had a few staff to help out with the DLC. It was tougher than I expected.
And with the Square Enix’s and Platinum Game’s CEO making an appearance in the game, surely must’ve gathered controversy. (laughs)
Yoko: That was only but a factor. At first the additional costumes were gonna be about 1800 yen, but that was way too expensive for what it was so, adding in a simple side story and a colosseum, with the addition of a lower price of 1500 yen, as well as adding another extra of the CEO fight… Well, I think it’s all satisfactory content.
With the concert ended and the DLC already released, has “NieR:Automata” reached it’s end?
Saito: I wonder. The next thing would probably be, for example, in 3 years time, the “NieR” 10th year anniversary. I daydream about what we should do for it. By then, I have no idea what we’d (the team) all be doing. My liver has been in quite bad shape after all...
Yoko: Me too. We’ll just leave the rest to the next generation. All I’ve been thinking is how I’m gonna die.
Please don’t say that. (weakly laughs) A 10th year anniversary is splendid isn’t it? I have great expectations for it.
Saito: This is all still some far ways off but, as long as the fans love the “NieR” title, we will somehow push something out. And with that, everyone, please continue to forever support the “NieR” series.
Thank you very much for today!
Additional questions for Yoko Taro
On the following day, we asked the Director, Yoko Taro, some questions about his worldview of the story of NieR:Automata (in a super rushed fashion). This Q&A is completely non-edited so please read on. We will also ask questions to Yoko about the currently-on-sale Strategy Guide and the World Guide Book, so for those who are curious about the mysteries that lies within, please do check it out!
Q: In the game, we’ve seen Yorha units clash against each other, so if there ever was a scenario where 2B, 9S and A2 duke it out against each other, which model would be the absolute strongest?
Yoko: The E model is the strongest. Since this reply was written in a hurry, I will skip the details.
Q: Even though A2 and 2B are the same “No. 2” types, are their “Self Data” the same? Also, is it possible to implant A2’s Memory Data into 2B?
Yoko: A2 and 2B both have different Self Data. It is possible to do the implant. Since this reply was written in a hurry, I will skip the details.
Q: Despite being the same “No. 2” Type, when 9S first encountered A2, why did it feel like 9S had such a weak reaction in that encounter?
Yoko: It’s because he didn’t notice. Since this reply was written in a hurry, I will skip the details.
Q: Despite 2B being killed right before 9S’ eyes, why did he harbor such strong hate towards A2?
Yoko: Did it look like he hated her? Since this reply was written in a hurry, I will skip the details.
Q: In the World Guide Book as well as the Recital Drama’s script we saw the inclusion of the unsightly transcription of the “Country of Dawn” and the “Country of Night”. Could you give us some details about this?
Yoko: In the World of “NieR”, in the past, the Earth’s axis had been distorted, because of that, a perpetuity of a world of day and a world of night exists. I wrote this reply in a hurry so from here on out I will skip the details.
Q: From the Recital Drama, we now know that the one who conceived the “YoRHa Project” is Zinnia, as well as No.9 who knew of his plans. Is it safe to assume that No.9 and 9S are the exact same model?
Yoko: The names are different hence the model is different. Since this reply was written in a hurry, I will skip the details.
Q: Of all things, why did No.9 decide to help Zinnia with the “YoRHa Project”, despite being full of spite against the Project?
Yoko: There has been a misunderstanding. No.9 did not resent the YoRHa Project, rather, at the design of YoRHa units (The Black Box). Since this reply was written in a hurry, I will skip the details.
Q: Is there a reason as to why Zinnia and Pod042 share the same voice actor (Yasumoto)?
Yoko: It is because Zinnia is Pod042’s personal data prototype. Since this reply was written in a hurry, I will skip the details.
Q: In the Recital Drama, there was no passage pertaining A2’s awakening, is it safe to assume that she woke up somewhere?
Yoko: If anything, “to assume” is all up to you. Since this reply was written in a hurry, I will skip the details.

i feel obligated to do this as a Tumblr User that likes Consistency so here’s my review of my life in 2017
so as i said, this feels like an obligation and really hard to write about cause i’ve yet to process this year. it feels like it didn’t happen in a lot of ways. like i didn’t just reach the end of something...i’m just carrying out my existence as usual. looking back on the high points this year has been really good to me. i’m just...not happy, yet, so it still feels like i’ve yet to accomplish something. the last few months have been draining, school is draining. i feel like i don’t have time to be a person. i didn’t listen to that much music this year outside my usual bands new releases / bands who haven’t made music in 5 years which i’m disappointed in. but i did go to a lot of shows those were some major highlights (i went to ~40 shows this year! wow! here’s some i remember: the moms, aaron west, panic ( my 100th show ever!!)x2, bastile, pvris, pinegrove, ymas, mayday parade, the glaciers x2, now now, warped tour, fall out boy, local natives, young the giant , the killers/global citizen, harry styles, ed sheeran x2, paramore x2, the wonder years, halsey, brand new, wpir halloween show, the maine x5 , joyce manor, soccer mommy, all time low x3)
my top shows tho were
1. paramore
2. harry styles
3. joyce manor
4. panic (in boston)
5. all time low swir 10th anniversary show (night two)
music was obviously a big party of my year/most of favorite parts cause...it’s my whole like. paramore releasing after laughter this year was everything to me. the day hard times dropped...just might be my favorite day of the year like that day i felt PURE JOY.
i think sophomore survey at school really fucked with me. anything before this summer is a blur but when i think back all i can think is survey. i created really cool work spring semester, but it ended with that. i’m not one to fuck up. i turn things in on time. i work my hardest. but when it came to this i royally fucked up (at least in my mind) and it’s like...scarred me ever since. just thinking about it right now is freaking me out.
i traveled europe with a friend for two weeks which was honestly a bit rough, but i’m proud of myself for being a responsible adult/ i could have done the trip on my own. either way i saw some cool stuff.
nashville was so so cool. i love nashville. gritty was v cool but also v short and i still felt like a bit of a loner outside of the two internet friends i knew v well who were there! but man i’m so happy it brought me to nashville. it was the first time i traveled purely alone/hung out/explored by myself. i got to see the maine / all american rejects/ dashboard there. i ran into cassadee pope, josh montgomery from tss?? all the boys in the maine. i technically spent a week in the woods w sierra freakin kusterbeck. there were so many idols at gritty lmao. post camp i got invited to stay in an airbnb and it felt good to be included.
i started working at refinery29. which seems so wild that even telling a version of me from a few months ago that, she wouldn’t believe me. it’s hard tho and my anxiety gets the best of me when i’m there, if my works good enough, if my coworkers like me. i hope to have more confidence in 2018. i hate to be negative about it and everyone else seems so in awe of me/jealous that i want to say it’s incredible all the time but Who I Am as a person makes it hard to be in that environment.
i still really want to be making art for music. that’s the real goal. i’m tired of comparing myself to others instead of focusing on my own work/growing organically. my time will come i just hoped it would come sooner than this which has contributed to me feeling like a fAilURE. maybe this will be my year.
i’m still figuring out love, relationships, etc...i don’t know i just don’t connect with other people easily. i hate that i physically don’t have time to commit to figure this out. i think i had the chance at something great this past semester and being in school and working literally did not afford me the time. and when i did have time i was too anxious to do anything about it. it’s honestly fucking sad of me as a human being. edit: CAN 2018 BE THE YEAR I AT LEAST GET SOME DICK IN MY LIFE GOD
maybe this year i’ll have the guts to get help?? i’m still too scared. i also think it will suddenly answer all my problems but realistically it won’t lol. i’m so ashamed of myself :-)
i think in a lot of ways i became apathetic this year. apathetic towards just about everything.
in 2018 i’m just going to keep working on myself, psycho analyzing myself. work on having the guts to answer the phone. work on opening up to others. maybe text that boy back. i hope i go somewhere with my work, even if it’s just making stuff I’M proud of, even if no one else notices. i’m going to start asking for more opportunities. shoot more concerts. write more. listen to more music. and hopefully come out the other side a better person than i feel like i am right now.

[TRANS] 170516 BTS - SportsKhan Interview
Source: 1, 2, 3 KRN - ENG © ktaebwi
- Nice to meet you. ‘The Wings Tour’ has passed its halfway point. How you do feel?
RAP MONSTER: “Already…! Physically it’s tiring but mentally I feel good. Whenever I hear the cheering of fans all over the world, I feel an unspeakable joy and delight. Thank you for letting me experience these feelings, and I hope the members and I will all be healthy for the rest of the tour.”
JUNGKOOK: “While touring, I get to make eye contact with a lot of fans, but the more I perform, the more I feel ‘I need to work really hard to become one with the fans’. And of course the fun is still forever the same. I have to develop my skills as well to show a more improved side of myself.”
- This is your second tour, seems like you have relaxed a little bit more. Any newly-found joy of touring worldwide?
SUGA: “As the venue and the audience number gets bigger, I often think about the flow of the performance. Finding that flow is really fun.”
JIMIN: “The first tour went by too hectically so it left a lot of regrets. But this time I’m getting the feeling of ‘Concerts are fun’.”
- Compared to the first tour, the tour schedule has expanded drastically. Every country seems bring a distinctive vibe and feeling.
JIN: “There are people who just quietly listen to the songs and there are those who sing along too. But all the audience regardless of country enjoy our music and performances.”
J-HOPE: “Since North and South America fans can’t see us frequently, they reacted very passionately. They sing and dance along with us, we even receive more energy thanks to their excitement. We’re currently performing in South East Asia and the reactions are indeed very enthusiastic too.
- Is there any interesting episode during the tour?
J-HOPE: “I start enjoy eating local food in each country. But some are quite sensitive towards food so seems like I’m the only one eating it too deliciously, I feel sorry for that.”
V: “There will be soon. I’m thinking of making some funny episodes with the members. Please look forward to it!”
- In less than 4 years, many things have come true. How would you put it in short?
RAP MONSTER: “I worked really hard. It was such a spectacular 4 years that I seem to forget everything in the previous 20 years.”
SUGA: “It was 4 years of only looking forward and running. I worked so hard mindlessly.”
- What does A.R.M.Y mean to BTS?
JIN: “A part of us. We can exist because there’s ARMY. We are nothing without ARMY.”
SUGA: “I’m happy that we give and receive positive influence from each other. As much as they gain strength from looking at us, we also gain strength by looking at them. Thank you for influencing us whenever we’re tired and exhausted.”
V: “ARMY is the reason why we can go perform around the world, the reason we work harder to show you guys everything of us.”
- Foreign artists that you want to collaborate with, or any artist you admire?
RAP MONSTER: “Drake, Nas, Tablo-hyungnim, Yoonha-noona, Lee Sora-sunbaenim.”
JIN: “I really like Coldplay. They’re so awesome, I don’t think to the extent of collaborating with them, I’m just supporting them from afar.”
SUGA: “I have many favorite artists. These days I listen to Flume quite a lot. It’d be fun if we collaborate.”
J-HOPE: “I want to try making a fun song with Tinashe.”
V: “I really like John Legend-sunbaenim. I’m an absolute, total, real fan. I like all of his songs but ‘Start’ is my ultimate favorite!”
JIMIN: “I’ll pick Ariana Grande.”
JUNGKOOK: “I want to try composing together with Justin Bieber and Charlie Puth. I also want to try making a song with the vibes of Radwimps’ ‘Date’.”
- BTS has a lot of songs with difficult choreography. What’s the song with the hardest choreography?
JIMIN: “My solo song ‘Lie’ is the hardest.”
JUNGKOOK: “For me it’s ‘Danger’.”
- If Bangtan Boys are no longer ‘boys’, what will your group name be?
JIN: “We’re always boys at heart, so we won’t change the group name.”
- If BTS members are not part of BTS right now, what would you be? And how will you be in 10 years?
RAP MONSTER: I would probably be a Business & Economics student. 10 years later when the waves* go by, I hope I can make music and perform with a more relaxed mind.”
(T/N: can be understood as ups and downs, or the surge of immaturity of the youth.)
SUGA: “If I weren’t part of BTS, I would be composing right now. 10 years later I’ll still be active as BTS.”
- We’ll be asking individual questions. Rap Monster, what is the hardest moment as a leader?
RAP MONSTER: “I think it’s when I need to work hard and take care of the parts that other members can’t see.”
- Suga, what’s your favorite hair color?
SUGA: “Black.”
- Jin, this has been a rising topic among fans, how do you manage your appearance?
JIN: “Using facial masks frequently, eating a lot of fruits, drinking water, also the self-esteem and confidence in my appearance and overall just handsomeness. These are the secrets to my perfect skin and appearance. Haha.”
- V, can you give some advice to timid and shy people on how to raise confidence?
V: “I want to tell them to think ahead of what will happen next and not be scared of it. I learned that if you continue to be timid and shy, then even things that are supposed to go well will not too. Fighting.”
- J-hope, why did you start dancing?
J-HOPE: “I started dancing because I simply just like music and expressing the music with my body. The decisive reason was that performance I had at my elementary school retreat’s talent show. It was when I felt the fun of music.”
- Jungkook, you always carry a big backpack whenever going on tour, what do you put in there?
JUNGKOOK: “I have to bring my bluetooth speaker.”
- Jimin, you have the potential to be a rapper, do you want to join the rapper line?
JIMIN: “Thank you but I have never thought of joining the rapper line. I think it’s impossible.”
- Let’s head back to common questions. I heard you release a new Japanese music video and album on the 10th. What’s your plan for the rest of the year?
J-HOPE: “My ultimate goal is to wrap up the tour successfully and show a cool side of myself.”
JIMIN: “We will not only be promoting the new album in Japan but also performing in several cities.”
- I remember you once said in an interview that you have been including “our stories” in your songs, but now you “want to include other people’s stories” as well. You mainly captured the emotions of the youth in their early 20s. Is there any emotion or song’s vibe that you want to try?
RAP MONSTER: “I haven’t been able to tell the stories about parents properly, hope one day I can write a song about that topic.”
V: “I want to personally compose and write lyrics for a song of my style that everyone can enjoy and have fun listening . I’m practicing diligently right now, please look forward to it.”
- A word to global fans and also readers of ‘SportsKhan’ for our 12th anniversary.
RAP MONSTER: “Thank you for always accompanying us. The glory we get belongs to everyone. We will move forward with a modest and grateful mindset. To all readers and ‘SportsKhan’ who are celebrating their 12th year anniversary, congratulations to everyone. Thank you and I love you.”
JIN: “Thank you for always staying with us. Like how your love makes us shine, we want to make you shine too. We’ll love you endlessly. Thank you.”
SUGA: “Congratulations to ‘SportsKhan’ on your 12th anniversary. will wrap up successfully so please look forward to it.”
J-HOPE: “Please love BTS a lot and to readers of ‘SportsKhan’, please keep an eyes on us in the future as well.”
V: “Thank you ARMY for adoring us, saying ‘I love you’ a lot to us, thank you for coming with us all the way here. We will work harder to show you cooler songs and performances. I love you too. Readers, if you eat too many ice creams because it’s hot, you’ll catch a cold. Please be careful of the fine dust. Have a great day everyone!”
JIMIN: “ARMYs, please always avoid catching a cold and take care of your health. Thank you for giving us the chance to deliver our news through an interview like this. I’m always grateful for your interest towards us. I hope all readers will be healthy and we’ll do our best in the future too.”
JUNGKOOK: “We’re working really hard right now. We’ll work even harder to give you strength even if it’s just a little bit. And to all readers, please love BTS a lot. You will have a lot of fun listening to our music!”

**Please do not repost without credit** [TRANS] 2020.12.25 SONE NOTE LIVE vol 29 with Hyoyeon
Staff: The plan this time is photoshoots in various situations! This is a first for SONE JAPAN, so how was it?
Hyoyeon: It was great being able to show myself with [different] moods.
Staff: Did you do anything to prepare for the photoshoot the day before? Please share if you did some care and training at home.
Hyoyeon: I ate non salty foods for dinner to avoid swelling!
Staff: Hyoyeon, your different cool expressions depending on the scene were impressive. Is there anything you always keep in mind during a photoshoot?
Hyoyeon: Rather than being conscious of presenting a cool expression, I did natural expressions that matched the outfits and backgrounds.
Staff: You shot in several different situations and moods. Do you have a favorite scene that you want SONE JAPAN to see? Please share why as well.
Hyoyeon: I hope that you can see the moods I give off as a point to look for. Also, it has been awhile since I took photos with a dark hair color, so I think my hair would be a different point!
Staff: How did you spend your time while waiting for the scene switchovers and camera settings changes?
Hyoyeon: I ate snacks like jelly!
Staff: If there is another chance for a photoshoot for SONE NOTE LIVE, what scenes and situations would you like to try out?
Hyoyeon: I’d like to try a photoshoot for cutting edge high fashion.
Staff: If you were to have a photoshoot with the members, what kind of situation would you like to shoot? Please share why as well.
Hyoyeon: I’d like to try having a photoshoot with pajamas or wearing princess outfits!
Staff: You released your new song, “DESSERT”, as DJ HYO in July, and on October 30th you released a new collaboration song, “Think About Me”. How do you want fans to listen to them? Please share any particular points as well.
Hyoyeon: For “DESSERT”, fans around the world shared the ‘Dessert dance challenge’ videos with the members a lot!
For “Think About Me”, I went to Amsterdam last year to DJ, the response was great, and I was able to shoot a MV in a beautiful location.
Staff: This year SNSD has their 10th anniversary in Japan. Looking back at these 10 years, please share any memorable events or episodes and the reasons why.
Hyoyeon: The tours we had in Japan were the most memorable. The memories of spending time together with the members and staff while preparing for the concert, and the times when we had fun with our fans as one on the stage that we worked so hard to prepare.
Staff: Is there anything that you think has changed for you during these 10 years, and is there anything that hasn’t changed?
Hyoyeon: My horizons have expanded as I can see more around me than I did 10 years ago.
Staff: If you could go back anytime in the past 10 years, how many years ago would you go back? Please share the reason as well.
Hyoyeon: The debut showcase performance. I’d like to go back to the first time and spend even more time with everyone!
Staff: Is there anything that the Hyoyeon now would like to say to the Hyoyeon of 10 years ago?
Hyoyeon: Learn more and work harder for the next 10 years.
Staff: Do you have any goals or anything new that you want to try out? Please share why as well.
Hyoyeon: Language. I’d also like to be perfect at DJing. And producing, too!
Staff: Finally a message for SONE JAPAN, please!
Hyoyeon: Congratulations on your 10th year with SNSD! And thank you so much. The time that we spend with everyone and all of your support really becomes our power and always makes us shine.
I will keep the good music coming. Let’s spend a lot of time together♡

[PIC/TRANS] FTISLAND’s Cosmopolitan Magazine June 2017 Interview
FTISLAND is celebrating their 10th anniversary this year. Honestly, in Korea, it is not an easy thing to maintain a group, let alone a band, for 10 years.
Hongki: Yes, indeed. When we were younger when we were going to debut, we didn’t really want to debut. Since we debuted when we were still really inexperienced, (now) music-wise, we still have so many things that we want to try, and we have so many things that we still want to do better. Honestly, for several years, we didn’t really have the ambition to have promotional activities since we came to do music. The numerical figure of “10 years″ somewhat holds a heavy meaning to us now.
To be able to stay solid for a long time, what do you think is your driving force?
Hongki: We are a band. For a band, the nature of the range of music that we can do is wide. And yet, (at the same time) we have our own color too. “Why is the market for bands in Korea this stagnant?” is FTISLAND’s driving force for keep being active. Honestly, at the same time, our identity as a band that has been through its own period of crisis is also our driving force. When we endeavored to do band music which at the same time drives us further from the music that the public like, at times, the feeling of wanting to give up came to mind. Even though so, we still believe that the fact that we are doing the music that we like is the most important thing.
Does FTISLAND identify themselves as a rock band?
Hongki: We have always said, we are “a band that goes with the season”, we would like to use such expression. As much as we want to do music that depends on the season, for that much too that we want to show all kinds of genre that we can do. Be it modern, up-tempo, jazz, hard rock, and more, we want to show a wide variety of genres. Since we have the ambition to show everything, it is hard to think of one certain formula to define us.
When FTISLAND debuted in 2007, frankly, in music broadcasts filled with idol music, there was barely any instances for them to have a group sound. However now, there has been an emergence of bands that do music. Then, in what aspect that FTISLAND can pride themselves on compared to them?
Hongki: I think its the fact that we have come a long way, also, the fact that we are the first one who tried this path and actually is doing well. We are proud that even though we’ve had our trials and errors, but we are holding on our music strongly. Very recently, I went to that mask broadcast, and the panelist gave us a compliment, “You are really cool.” Didn’t we set popularity aside to pursue our music? I’m thinking, it might be that, that makes us look cool. Won’t it be that very aspect that sets us aside from the others, our courage to sacrifice charts.
So you are saying that you are giving up on charts?
Minhwan: Frankly speaking, there is a bit of distance between the so called “popular music” and music. Consequently, it is a possibility that we are driven further from popularity. Even though so, unlike what I thought, it feels much more comfortable this way. We don’t really have to look at the music charts. Meanwhile, we have also earned many more manias as we do more concerts. Even though so, slowly, I have also become more greedy. The thought that “It would be great if the “popular music” can also accept our music” has come to mind.
You’re saying that you don’t really have to look at charts actually looks really cool haha
Seunghyun: Haha.. honestly, I still look at them. I am curious about who is popular lately.
Even though so, as Minhwan said, wouldn’t it be great if the general public can accept band music as well. Since it will diversify the music markets too.
Seunghyun: Indeed, if we can pursue both at the same time, wouldn’t it be the best? I have become more greedy.
Hongki: That’s true. As we release more albums, naturally, the ambition to also succeed in that aspect (t/n: popular music chart) has also come to mind.
But I’m sure that music-wise, FTISLAND will still walk on their way, of course. Your debut song was an emotional piece, while you have also shown your hard rock after that. For your upcoming 10th anniversary album, what would it be like?
Hongki: For this album, I have asked the acquaintances around us to help monitoring. And they all told us, “You have done all the music that a band can do.” Its that much that we try to do a wide variety of genre. Consequently, we also have emotional songs too (in this album).
For this upcoming promotional activity, among the members, do you have a fixed goal already? Albeit small?
Hongki: Its been a while, we kind of want to see our songs on the chart. haha
Jaejin: It really has been a while that we saw it. Now, slowly, even though only at the bottom, let’s see our songs in the charts!
Hongki: Thanks to our fans, Take Me Now and Pray .. (t/n: I’m sorry, this part is cut! If the magazine is published and we have scans, I will update it! T_T)
Haha. On that note, for the band FTISLAND who is commemorating their 10th anniversary now, is being attached to the label “idol” uncomfortable?
Hongki: Of course, in the past to be labeled as “idol band” is something that we don’t particularly like. Since we think that the music that we do is not idol music. But now, we like it. If we say that we don’t want to be an idol anymore, won’t it just show our age? That’s why, somehow, on the way, we have dropped that (t/n: the notion of not being an idol).
Thinking about it, it has also been 10 years that FTISLAND has served in the company. For FTISLAND, until how far do you want to go?
Hongki: Until as long as I can protect my vocal chord. Actually, not long ago, I went to watch Coldplay’s concert, I received such a big motivation there. If you know me, I didn’t really like Coldplay at first. Before, I thought that they are just an imitation of Radiohead. But, slowly, I got to know their color. Their songs like Yellow is a song that was able to be received well, isn’t it? In that aspect, I received such a big motivation. Be it from their way in handling music or their way in leading concerts, I think they are amazing. I want us to be a band that can give happiness to anyone, and a band that anyone can look up to, just like them. But to be able to reach that, we still have a long way, I guess? In the meantime, we still have to go to the army too. Haha. Everyone should stay away from incidents too.
But, FTISLAND hasn’t been on any incidents, right?
Seunghyun: Yes, that’s true, thankfully.
Hongki: We want to keep going on staying away from incidents like this. For us, whether we are going to be married, or whatever that we are going to do, we want to keep going on under FTISLAND’s name.. (t/n: This part is also cut, I will update it if we have scans later. :))
