someone's probably already done one of these by this point but uh.
GHIBLI-MOVIE-BASED TWST FAN SCHOOL!!
i actually tried designing a ghibli inspired fanschool when i first got into twst (four years ago... yeesh) but it never took off and i cant find any of that anymore so... I'M TRYING AGAIN!! i literally dont even have a school name yet but i'll add tidbits explaining my choices for the uniform under the cut! i'll tag this with the school name when i come up with it later edit 8/4: school name has been added in tags! edit 8/4 (again): school logo and first dorm have been added! edit 8/6: second dorm added!
im 1st going to explain my reasoning for the uniform design and then dive into my ideas for the school itself (dorms, atmosphere, location, etc) one of the biggest things i assosciate ghibli with is their nature + sky shots; such as these ones
so i wanted to include flora inside the design, hence the boa, laurel, and the little vine wrapping around the fem uniforms sock! adding onto that, i made the uniform a light blue striped with white to reference the skies. i also assosciate ghibli movies with peace, so the light blue adds onto that. the band on the arm is the same as nrc's; serves to show what dorm the student is in. the mage stone is located at the broach on the collar's bowtie. the gold around the gem is meant to look like a little flower!
moving onto the ideas i have abt the school...
going back the floral aspects of the uniform design, i think it'd be really cute and magical if they when they recieved the greenery (i'll refer to both the boa and laurel as 'greenery' collectively for simplicity sake) during their freshman year, there were no flowers yet. i think over time, as each student grows as a mage over their years at the school, flowers and plants bloom on the greenery to show their progress. maybe the flowers are specific to each student? i cant decided whether its instinct or they choose what flowers they want themselves
i feel like itd be fitting for the school to be located in a very secluded area. when i picture it in my head, the main building is smack dab in the middle of a flower-filled hillside that's right next to a forest... i'd like for it to be next to water too, but i'm not sure if the ocean would make sense geographically????? maybe it's just a big lake or waterfall inside the forest
i think the correct aesthetic for the school is 'romantic academia?' that's what pinterest is telling me anyway LOL. i think maybe the building is just shaped like a castle similar to nrc and rsa.. but then again i really like the idea of it being similar to Little Witch Academia's luna nova academy. we'll see
like nrc, i have seven dorms planned and theyre twisted from the most iconic ghibli films (according to google). in no particular order: howl's moving castle, princess mononoke, spirited away, ponyo, my neighbor totoro, kiki's delivery service, and castle in the sky. i might add or remove some of these! but theyre what i have for now. thats all i have for now, but feel free to give me any input/ideas (whether in the replies or my asks)! also if anybody wants to draw their oc in the uniform or anything i'd love to see it pls @ me...!!!!

Lord of the Rings Characters as Studio Ghibli Characters
Because my mom and I just watched all the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies and I am also obsessed with Studio Ghibli, I thought this would be fun! So here we go!
Frodo – Nausicäa (Nausicäa of the Valley of the Wind
Both simply want to protect and save their homes (Frodo with the Shire and Nausicäa with the Valley), and although they can fight, they consistently choose not to, and choose to be kind instead.
Sam – Pazu (Castle in the Sky)
Both have similar arcs! They have a friend they are ride or die for, but when the friend sends them away, they have to make a choice to go home or go back for their friend anyway—and they choose to have courage and go back.
Merry – Kiki (Kiki’s Delivery Service)
(Merry was kinda hard ngl) I think he and Kiki have growing up in common. They learn the hard way that life isn’t how they thought it was or would be, whether by being thrust into a dangerous quest or going off to grow up alone; and although this sobers them up a bit, they never lose their optimism and instead figure out what they can do to keep their heads up.
Pippin – Chihiro (Spirited Away)
Like Merry, Pippin was thrust into the whole Quest unexpectedly, as was Chihiro (and yes I’m aware Pippin knew a little bit in the books but bear with me). But both have a common goal of helping others (for Pippin it’s Frodo, and for Chihiro it’s her parents), and maybe they don’t know exactly what they’re doing, but they survived their journeys.
Gandalf – Zeniba (Spirited Away)
Zeniba is just as powerful as her twin Yubaba, but rather than use her power for greedy purposes, Zeniba chose to live a quiet, simple life in the forest. Similarly, Gandalf is one of the Maiar—an all-powerful wizard who consistently implies he could decimate everyone in his way. And yet, he interacts with people, he loves hobbits, he uses his power to entertain and delight people; he consistently chooses a simple life.
Aragorn – Howl (Howl’s Moving Castle)
Both run from something—Howl from any supposed “national responsibility” and Aragorn from his family history. But both come into themselves and both find a reason to fight. Although I think Aragorn is FAR less concerned about his appearance lol
Legolas – Haku (Spirited Away)
Legolas was also hard, but I went based on vibes and Haku fit those vibes. They’re both beings that have a strong connection to nature, Haku being a river spirit and Legolas being a Wood Elf.
Gimli – Dola (Castle in the Sky)
Gimli and Dola both appear gruff and crude at first, insensitive and not caring about anything except their goals. But as time goes on, it is revealed they are very caring people who love their friends and families, and they’re actually pretty soft inside after all. And both have a love for treasure!
Boromir – Ashitaka (Princess Mononoke)
Both Ashitaka and Boromir have a lot going on—Ashitaka obviously has his curse that’s eating away at him and has to spend the entire movie contemplating his own imminent death, and Boromir has the weight of his father’s expectations and the desire to defend Gondor and save his people. But they are both very noble people who try to do the right thing even if they may not know what exactly the right thing is, and at the very end they stick to their morals and end their films with honor.
That’s all for now! I may do a part 2!

nausicaa of the valley of the wind ─ guys i'm also in love with this, so good oh my god. scared me in the end, when i thought she died, but she was okay because they helped her and she's amazing and it was such a great movie.
princess mononoke ─ beautiful, i loved it. thought for sure he was gonna die but no. i didn't expect the way it ended but it was a good movie
the wind rises ─ it was about planes and then he goes and falls in love but she was sick and i'm so sad because she left and then died and now, he has to live missing her. sobbing. i loved it.
whisper of the heart ─ it was cute and funny. he really liked her because he seen her reading a book what a dork. i loved it.
from up on poppy hill ─ i was so confused. i was rooting for them and then i wasn't and then i was and then i wasn't again. i thought they were related but then it turns out they weren't! confused the hell out of me but it's a good movie.
when marnie was there ─ i'm in love it. it was actually kinda sad but also so sweet. i was shocked to realize that was her grandmother. but she ended up making a friend and she was happy. sobs.
the tale of the princess kaguya — it was so sweet but so sad. i loved it, i’m in love with it. i actually cried. she was so miserable and then she left and sobs :(
only yesterday — kinda confused me at the start but i got it eventually. it was sweet i liked it.
porco posso ─ it was silly. i loved it. fio was sweet and she kinda reminded me of nausicaa. he totally loved gina but he's in denial cries. and the end??? did he go to the garden omg?? i need to know.
tales from earthsea ─ it so good, so pretty. omg, i loved it, in love with it. it might actually be my favorite. there were dragons! and she was a dragon! and i was so stressed but it was such an amazing movie! i love love love.

TXT as studio ghibli characters!
a/n - I was doing a studio ghibli marathon with my friends and thought I'd do this for fun ♡
---☆
Yeonjun - Howl (Howls moving castle)
honestly I don't even know how to explain this. Yeonjun just gives off that sort of vibe you know? 😭 Also Howls ego 😭😭😭 'if I can't be pretty there's no point in living 😔' I think this matches Yeonjun pretty well.
He'd be so cool, composed, and mysterious when you first meet, but once you start getting to know him he's just this big pouty adorable baby 🙃
Also imagine Yeonjun in Howls clothing 🫠 You know howls white top and tight black pants?
kind of like this?
Also fun fact: the female lead of howls moving castle has the same name as me so it makes the movie that much better 🙃
---☆
Soobin - Haku (Spirited away)
I think it's just because Soobin is so calm most of the time? Haku is also a leader of sorts to the other people at the bath house so yeah 🙃 (I'm sorry am I even making sense rn? 😭)
He may seem super blocked off at first but ends up being a huge help to you and a very close friend c:
Honestly I was kind of tempted to give this character to beomgyu just because of the long hair 😭
---☆
Beomgyu - Calcifer (Howls moving castle)
Calcifer is just so mischievous you know? (And dramatic but anyways) He's loud playful and just fun to be around 🤷🏻♀️ Calcifer is honestly like my favorite studi ghibli character ever.
I think he's also just really loyal. He can be super chaotic at times but when it comes to your time of need he'll be right by your side.
Like in the beginning of the movie, I don't think calcifer liked Sophie that much, and was always messing with her. But when she and howl were in danger he tried his best to help in any way he could.
---☆
Taehyun - Jiji (Kikis delivery service)
I mean Jiji is a cat so... do I really have to day anything more?
Jiji is probably one of the most down to earth and honest characters in studio ghibli.
He makes a great companion, great friend, and great advice giver. (Also super sarcastic but you know-)
He's the type to be super honest with you and tell you straight up if you've done something stupid. But that also makes him an amazing advice giver. Hence, leading to a great friendship 👍
---☆
Hueningkai - Sosuke (Ponyo)
I don't know how to explain this one 🙃
Sosuke is like this little ball of energy. Always curious and super energetic. He also has a huge imagination!
Throughout the movie I feel like Sosuke didn't really know what was going on, but he knew his friend needed help and was willing to do anything for them.
So huening might be clueless/ innocent at times, but he'd be willing to put himself at risk for you.
---☆
a/n: I'm so sorry that this is all over the place 😭 have of what I said makes basically no sense, but I hope you enjoyed my rambling still...?

Your Opinion on Ghibli movies.
🔥 🔥 🔥
cracks knuckles
Okay. So I will put the caveat that I stopped watching Ghibli movies after I was sorely disappointed with the Ghibli take on “Tales of Earthsea”, so any of my opinions are gonna be applied to only the ones I’ve actually seen.
Nausicaä and the Valley of the Wind: amazing. Soft apocalypse with massive bugs and a spooky jungle. Great environmental message. I would love a pet fox squirrel. Nausicaä is awesome and I want her wind glider. The ending never fails to make me cry. You see the origins of the “girl with strong connection to nature with a guy who loves and supports her” theme.
Castle in the Sky: this one’s one of my favorites. Giant super weapon and soft apocalypse vibes. The protagonists are ride or die. And “girl with strong connection to nature with a guy who loves and supports her”. The sky pirates are wonderful and the villain is so much fun (he’s a complete asshole).
Grave of the Fireflies: watched it once. I’m good.
My Neighbor Totoro: this is the second movie I ever watched. I love Totoro. And the Catbus. In fact I think we should invest in Catbus as a means of public transportation.
Kiki’s Delivery Service: this movie hits different when your an adult. Kiki’s journey and the burn out she eventually gets like. Definitely a comfort movie, but Kiki’s journey resonates with me. Oh and I want to live in that cabin in the woods with all the crows.
Porco Rosso: I too, would rather be a pig than a fascist.
Whisper of the Heart: this one’s just sweet. Like. It’s so cute and wholesome.
Princess Mononoke: look. Look. This movie changed me as a person. I saw this as a kid and boom..that was it. San lives with wolves and lives in the forest. Ashitaka is awesome and badass and rides a deer. Also like. The themes of this movie. It’s got the strong environmental message about the importance of living in community with nature, but there’s a lot of shades of grey. You see all sides of the story and it’s fantastic. I could talk about this movie for hours. And it has that classic “girl with strong connection to nature with a guy who loves and supports her”. Ashitaka and San are looking out for each other and it’s great.
Spirited Away: another excellent one. I think this one has my favorite soundtrack. And Chihiro’s journey to find herself and save Haku. I don’t have much else to say on this one. Go watch it it’s great.
The Cat Returns: it’s got walking cats. What more could you want.
Howls Moving Castle: I have to view this one as a separate entity from the book it’s (supposedly) based on. I enjoy this one as its own thing; the Howls Moving Castle book is like…so good. One of my favs. Anyways. Movie Howl - the feathery hug between Howl and Sophie low key rewired my brain chemistry.
Overall I just love these movies. The art is incredible and remains a huge inspiration to me, and you can see how much love gets put into those nature scenes. I could stare at then endlessly. And I love how Hiyao Miyazaki shows love in his movies, where like. The two protagonists help each other grow and make it a goal to live for each other. They accept each other where they are and are ride or die for each other. I just. That shit gets to me. Love it.
Thanks for the ask (and letting me ramble)🦎

If you want to do this too then go ahead. Happy November everyone!

Since my epic Studio Ghibli Summer is officially over, here's my ranking of the films I watched (which, I know, isn't every movie Ghibli has ever made):
Spirited Away (My favourite! (Also IMDb's favourite, apparently, and the Oscar winning one.) The spirit world looks so fascinating and I can't help being a sucker for 'The monster is just misunderstood'. And, well, 'a neglected child wanders off into a dream world', you know... There's so much going on visually and in terms of subtext that Japanese people probably understand much better. I watched this in the cinema when I was 12 or so, the perks of growing up with weebs as friends.)
The Cat Returns (This one has the best action. Also, talking cats! And a girl gets transformed into a cat! And it's like a sequel to WotH. I watched this one first, which makes it even better - WotH also reveals the backstory of the Baron. I actually can't decide if I like this or WotH better. This one is a bit more light-hearted and fast-paced where WotH is meditative and melancholic, but they're both great in their own way..
Whisper of the Heart (This one just spoke to me. It's about a girl who's fascinated by objects in a second hand store - it's basically about me! On a deeper level it's about... well, many things. Among them: growing up without support for your dreams - even though her family is at least nice to her, but they just don't really get it - and beating yourself up for not being as good at following them as someone who gets a lot more support. Something to think about.)
Porco Rosso (My sister raved about this, which maybe makes me biased, but I liked that it was more adult than the other films, and it just has a certain charm. I wonder how they came up with the premise. 'Hey, let's make the main character an anthropomorphic pig!' - 'So like a furry?' - 'No, he's under a curse!' - 'What's the curse?' - 'Fascism :)))')
Kiki's Delivery Service (I totally like this one for its looks. Such a beautiful vision for what European cities could look like. I wish they did! To me this was probably the most visually appealing film apart from Spirited Away. The end was really funny. Yaaay 100 people just died when a zeppelin crashed into several buildings, but this one random boy survived, party time!)
Ponyo (I mainly enjoyed the very counter-intuitive combination of Wagner and a children's movie about a talking fish. Also the mother is such a huge badass, it made me giggle. I wish we had gotten more backstory about Ponyo's parents though, that was the part that really interested me.)
(Continuing the list at number 7...)
-
-
-
-
-
Castle in the Sky (Kinda cool. Looks kinda simple compared to the later films, but I liked the story.)
When Marnie was here (I would have liked this better if I had watched it earlier in the summer, but I was already getting fed up with the Ghibli overload by the time I got around to it. Usually I like films that are like puzzles, where you have to gather clues and figure out what's happening. I kinda half-figured it out before the plot twist.)
From up on Poppy Hill (I mainly like the unconventional (by Ghibli standards) soundtrack)
My neighbour Totoro (This one is probably very good, but not my taste. I found it kinda boring, but I was more in an 'urban' mood anyway and even skipped most of the other more rural films.)
Howl's Moving Castle (This one I had watched before and it used to be my favourite. Then I read the book this year and the book and the film ruined each other for me. Epic fail on my part! Not the fault of the film really, but all I could think while watching was 'They completely changed this from the book!' The typical Ghibli vibe seemed too sugary when put on a book with a more cynical tone, only the book also seemed too cynical when seen through the lens of the film. I watched the film and also thought 'So this is how it could have been if the characters hadn't been so selfish and judgy to each other all the time!' As I said, epic fail on my part. Now I can enjoy neither.)
The Boy and the Heron (Surreal = Good. Watching this after 13 other Ghibli movies = It just doesn't impress me anymore.)
The Wind Rises (Nothing happens, kinda. I know, a lot happens, but also... kinda nothing.)
The Princess Kaguya (I don't get what's supposed to be so great about this. It's too long and the plot is predictable. I did like the end.)
The secret world of Arietty (This one I actively disliked. It seems to not be in the Ghibli spirit, which is of course up to me to define /s The housekeeper is Evil For No Reason, something I hadn't seen in other Ghibli films. I don't like evil aunties and grandiose speeches about the importance of family. There was something so conventional about this film, it was like something made by Disney.)
#studio ghibli#putting the rest under the cut to spare ppl who only want to read positive opinions here#no judgement for that#especially since ghibli movies are also comfort movies for many

Regarding Howl's Moving Castle: An absolutely unnecessary explanation I'd like to get off my chest.
I'd like to clarify a few things regarding my stance toward Howl's Moving Castle even though nobody asked (both movie and book) and its characters, mainly toward Howl himself:
I often present Howl as a thought-absent brainlet who hadn't had a single active brain cell penetrate that pretty head of his ever in his life (and he's so real for that). I can see how that could come across as disrespectful or ridiculing of the sources, but (and it's an enormous BUT) Miyazaki iteration of Wynne Jones' book is one piece of media I find myself visiting repeatedly.
Back when I was a kid, I've grown up watching Spirited Away (2001) and Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) on a loop. My sister later took the reins and continued the legacy with Ponyo (2008) and Arietty (2010).
I'm so endlessly lucky to have parents who recognized Studio Ghibli's stories as art and genuine fairy tales - mainly because this kind of animation wasn't that known in my country when I was little. They realized the heroines were similar to us in attributes and characteristics - Chihiro (literally being a 12yo), Ponyo (brave, courageous little fishy girl), so on and so forth. All these little ladies inspired me and my sister to be adventurous and strong and Miyazaki's stories shaped us to some degree.
Howl's Moving Castle, however, is very special to me. I found it around 11 years ago (I was around 12 give or take) and everything about the movie inspired me. I fell in love with the art (both Hisaishi's music and the art style), I yearned for the hopeless romance, for all the adventure, for the funny fire demon and I wished to be like Sophie, who had her head straight no matter the circumstance and whose spirits were never broken. As time passed, I started coming back to it frequently, and now, I'd say those pieces have become my quiet places to which I can go when there's too much commotion. That one piece of media I dive into when I want to clear my head.
I've always viewed Howl as flamboyant, a bit too dramatic, lazy, pretty disregarding, a bit cowardly, melodramatic, charismatic son of a gun. And I believe that's precisely the point of both the media. In both media, Sophie eventually 'unmasks' Howl and learns what loving, caring, and gold-hearted lurks underneath all the pretentiousness and rumors. The main catalyst for me to view Pendragon as a thoughtless idiot was Wynne Jones' original interpretation of Howl's character itself. Miyazaki's iteration of Howl (even though it 100% works within the movie universe) is heavily romanticized and toned from 100% to a 10% (20% at best) obnoxiousness. This 'toning down' works for the movie, because even though the movie Sophie is my beloved ladybug, the book Howl would swallow her whole. Poor Grandma Sophie wouldn't survive a day with the book adaptation.
If I may, I'd like to describe Howl as a happy-go-lucky idiot who throws stuff at walls and sees what sticks. This man smells of trouble, unforeseen heroics, poetry, and heartbreak. He is openly a coward who runs away from his responsibilities like it's an Olympic discipline. He throws childish tantrums over the smallest inconveniences (book Sophie must've been on the verge of committing crimes on multiple occasions, god bless her, I hope she has a wonderful day). BUT that's what makes him so loveable, intriguing, and fun to follow on a journey toward peace, remedy, and growth. He's flawed. He's a character who grows and learns from his mistakes, someone who finds a family along his journey.
So, even though I've called (and I shall continue to refer to him as such) Howl Pendragon a brainless king, the epitome of 'no thoughts, head empty', not a brain cell in sight & often assume he runs away from coherent thoughts, I view him as one of the most inspiring characters I ever discovered. It might sound stupid, but I aspire to be like him. I wish to find someone worth fighting for.
#howl pendragon#howl's moving castle (2004)#studio ghibli#hayao miyazaki#diana wynne jones#howl's moving castle (1986)#that settles it#now where was i-#oh yea not a single thought in that brain of his#sophie hatter

CHARACTERS: Ennoshita Chikara, Yachi Hitoka, Kenma Kozume, Hinata Shouyou, Kuroo Tetsurou with honourable mentions at the end
ENNOSHITA CHIKARA:
While Ennoshita can sit down and enjoy films I feel like he enjoys watching them more for the analytical film side of things. He likes to break them down and analyse the technical and thematical aspects as well as thinking about how he feels watching them.
The film buff in him holds Grave of the Fireflies (1988) so highly that even though it ripped his heart out he holds it as one of his favourite must watch in your life time films. He definitely cried his eyes out too. Not ashamed to admit it either. Can talk for hours about the powerful themes and will convince you to watch it if you haven't.
I think his all time favourite Ghibli movie though would be Princess Mononoke (1997). It just has that rewatchability, the visuals, the action, the complexity of the characters and the 'you're beautiful' line. It just captures everything he loves in films. Ennoshita the simp identifying with the simp characters. Hell yeah.
I think he'd watch all of the Ghibli films at least once and enjoy most of them enough to rewatch.
YACHI HITOKA:
I don't think she watches many movies. Ghibli movies I feel are the few that Yachi did come across though. I think a friend in her elementary school years introduced them to her. The first one she ever saw was Spirited Away (2001) and its held a special place in her heart ever since. It's probably her favourite one to rewatch.
She would have this fantasy as a kid too that every time she walked down an alleyway or through an arch she'd be whisked off away to another world. Yachi knew it was silly but it was her only escape from her studies.
Another one she really likes is Kiki's Delivery Service (1989). She really admires Kiki's confidence of being able to go out into world so young and make it on her own. It's the kind of confidence she wished she had for herself. As she gets older and grows confident she looks back on this movie with warmth, seeing herself become more confident like Kiki.
I like to think Ghibli movies for Yachi are comfort movies that she returns to in adulthood that remind her how much she's grown.
KENMA KOZUME:
I've said before he's into anime and manga, I think he'd be into Ghibli films too. I feel he'd chuck them on as way to wind down from gaming. Snug in bed and content just putting on a nice Ghibli film. Perfect. His perfect date night too honestly. There's actually a few I feel he'd like so I've given him a top 3 in no particular order.
Howl's Moving Castle (2004)—it's a staple and one of his most rewatched. He finds it easy to watch, likes the music, the banter of the romance couple and yeah maybe Howl's kinda hot sometimes even when he's pathetic. Kind of wants Howl merch. Buys the earrings.
When Marnie Was There (2014)—Shed a tear or two the first time because wow he wasn't expecting such a touching story. Was there for all the feels. Watched it again a few days later because it was stuck on his mind. It became one of his favs he puts on those occassions he wants to feel something.
Whisper of the Heart (1995)—Maybe because it's also my fav and the main love interest reminds me of a my fav dork that gets paired with Kenma and I feel like thats cute. But also I just feel like he'd vibe with this cute movie a lot! His fav character is the cat Muta.
HINATA SHOUYOU:
Loves to watch these movies with his sister Natsu. They watch anime together in general but Ghibli movies are just those extra fun ones they put on. They have a range but his favourite one is probably My Neighbour Totoro (1988).
Totoro is one of the first films Hinata remembers watching in general so it's mostly the nostalgia that makes it his favourite. He's an emotional film enjoyer. It's not about the themes or the analysis. He just wants to have fun and enjoy himself. Also the memories of watching it with his sister is what makes it special.
You know as well that if he's sharing this film with you then it's a big deal. It means a lot to him. It's a treasured part of his childhood. It's probably something he takes with him to brazil aswell like a little piece of home along with his one piece manga.
Bought his sister a little Totoro keychain in his third year when he was in Tokyo. Gave it to her before he left for brazil. It was like a little goodbye to their childhood together.
KUROO TETSUROU:
He's another one I feel has a couple of favourites. Ones he has come to love and find comfort films in.
The first one is just one he likes for the themes, the main character and the laughs. Porco Rosso (1992)—Obviously loves the whole seaplane pirates action of it all and heroic main character. I feel like he'd identify with the main character not being good at admiting romantic feelings (Kuroo's a fumbler). Also appreciates the character growth throughout the film. Also the whole 'I'd rather be a pig than facist.' 10/10.
Only Yesterday (1991)—This one I see him watching on a whim when he was younger. His parents were arguing again, his life was a little unstable and uncertain (this was before he moved nextdoor to Kenma) and he needed to drown the noise out. He found this movie put it on and really connected with it. He really felt lost like the main character and felt hope watching it—seeing there was a hopeful ending.
I think as he gets older and expands his viewing I think Kuroo would also vibe with Whisper of the Heart (1995). He'd vibe with the main love interest. He's on the same level, trying to be cool to win over the person he has a crush on but really he's been pining all this time. Also working hard to pursue his dreams? Kuroo all over. He's also just a sucker for a love.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS:
My Neighbor Totoro (1988)/Kiki's Delivery Service (1989): Kiyoko Shimizu, Yaku Morisuke, Yamaguchi Tadashi
Porco Rosso (1992)/Princess Mononoke (1997): Bokuto Koutarou, Iwaizumi Haijime, Tanaka Ryuunosuke, Saeko Tanaka, Osamu Miya, Atsumu Miya, Suna Rintarou
Only Yesterday(1991)/Whisper of the Heart (1995): Oikawa Tooru, Akaashi Keiji, Kenji Futakuchi
Spirited Away (2001)/Howl's Moving Castle (2004): Kunimi Akira, Semi Eita, Kageyama Tobio, Kiyoomi Sakusa
Ponyo (2008)/The Secret World of Arrietty (2010)/When Marnie Was There (2014): Tendou Satori (he likes them all but it's the visuals and emotions), Aone Takanobu, Koganegawa Kanji, Kentarou Kyoutani

Independent Excursion #1: Studio Ghibli Museum and Park
On May 10, some friends and I went to the Studio Ghibli Museum, which is outside of Tokyo. We purchased reservation tickets a month ahead of time, so we showed up at our given time and waited in the queue. Once we entered the museum, we were not allowed to take any photos inside. We also received our ticket stub for the short film we would watch later. The main exhibition on the bottom floor of the museum is dedicated to the process of creating an animated film. There were sketches of Ghibli characters, stills and screen grabs of Ghibli films, and a variety of interactive ways to engage with the exhibit. My favorite ones involved rolling the film of a scene from “Spirited Away”; by adjusting your hand’s speed you could adjust the speed of the animation. On the second floor, there is a big Cat Bus for children to play on, and on the roof, there is a life size robot from “Castle in the Sky” that you can take pictures with. The rooftop is filled with lush greenery and vegetation. After getting souvenirs and gifts at the Mamma Aiuto Shop, we had some treats at the Straw Hat Café. We ended by going to the Saturn Theatre and watching a short, 13-minute film. It was a mini-sequel to “My Neighbor Totoro”. I enjoyed watching it with Japanese audio, but there were no English subtitles. I usually watch Ghibli movies with the English audio, so it was fun to try and follow along with the plot without any subtitles or audio I could understand.
On May 23, we went to Ghibli Park in Aichi. We arrived later to our reservation than expected, so we did not have enough time to visit all of the different areas surrounding the Ghibli Warehouse, where we spent the most time. We browsed the various shops, and a couple of my friends checked out their food options outside. I was able to see and take pictures in a recreation of Arrietty’s house from “The Secret World of Arrietty” as well as the garden, the entrance to her home. We walked by Children’s Town which replicates where Studio Ghibli is located in Tokyo. We also walked through the main exhibition which walks you through famous scenes in many of the Ghibli movies, and you can take pictures at each scene! Besides the Grand Warehouse, we were able to briefly visit the Valley of Witches. We were able to go into a replica of Kiki’s attic room from “Kiki’s Delivery Service” and see Howl’s Castle and Sophie’s hat shop from “Howl’s Moving Castle”.
Academic Reflection:
Something that stood out to me was the stark contrast between the museum and the park. The museum was more informational regarding the animation process, while the park was more of a photo op area to immerse oneself into various cinematic universes. At first, I felt the museum could use more engaging and interactive elements, but after reading “Anime tourism: discursive construction and reception of the Studio Ghibli Art Museum”, I realized how the park and museum are supposed to provide completely different experiences. The small nods to Ghibli in the design and decoration of the museum add a more subtle immersive element compared to outwardly blunt decoration elements and life size scenes at the Studio Ghibli Museum. I also learned through my reading that the museum was designed by Hayao Miyazaki with the goal of making the museum itself an exhibit.
Additionally, although it was a journey and a half to get to both the museum and the park, I believe that their geographic isolation from major cities like Tokyo and Kyoto serve to emphasize the strong connection between Studio Ghibli and the natural environment. Reading the following excerpt by Denison (550) furthered my belief:
“The association between the park and the museum purposefully mirrors themes within many of Miyazaki and Takahata’s Ghibli films, which frequently entertain pro-environment motifs and plot lines (McCarthy 1999; Napier 2005). The landscape around the Art Museum therefore works not just as a marker of its distinctiveness as a place of anime tourism, it further marks the Art Museum as geographically separate from the urban norm of Tokyo. This in turn reinforces the importance of nature to the Ghibli brand of filmmaking, and the location of the museum in Mitaka helps to situate the Art Museum as a cultural geographic response to previous anime tourism sites located within the centre of Tokyo.”

New AU Idea!
So this is based on a thing I did because I was bored with my child Dave AI. Basically I decided to put him on the cat bus and take him to a spirit forest and thought it would be cool to imply that the reason he fits in so well there and not anywhere else is because he’s some kind of creepy lizard fae creature. It was mostly just me reminiscing over watching Studio Ghibli, and then I thought… what if there was a Studio Ghibli DSAF fusion AU.
So my idea for this AU is for it to play like a combination of my three favourite Studio Ghibli movies in plot, those being My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away and Ponyo (a bit less of Ponyo and using My Neighbour Totoro as the main framework because it’s what fits best. Also I must mention I adore Kiki’s Delivery Service and Howls Moving Castle, I just prefer these ones, and these fit the story I’m thinking of better.)
So it would have child protagonists like all 3 of those movies, and would mostly focus on Jack. Löng post btw explaining the general plot. Please read it over though and tell me who you want me to design first and if you have any ideas to improve the AU! <:
My idea for the plot is that like in My Neighbour Totoro, Jack, Dee and Peter have just moved to a new neighbourhood. Dee is exited because she’s an adorable little child, is underrated as hell, and I love her. Peter is distant from the rest of the family because he’s nearly an adult and is upset about moving and is angsting. And Jack hates the idea of moving away from his old friends, and is kinda left alone to deal with it.
The new house is a bit of a mess as it’s really old and hasn’t been lived in for a long time, Dee is exited and is constantly exploring the forest, Peter just kinda stays in his own room and ignores everyone, and Jack just kinda doesn’t know what to do.
Dee starts talking about seeing spirits early on, but no one believes her.
Jack gets mad and blows up at his parents at dinner one day, before running off into the woods, he travels into a very deep, dark part of the woods, followed by his siblings, and then is stopped by Dave, who is a fae spirit around Jack’s age, or at least who seems to be as spirit ages are unclear, he’s probably older than that but is considered a child by spirit terms and mentally and physically is one. Dave is immediately hostile and threatens Jack’s life if he gets any closer. Jack asks why and Dave explains that he’s protecting the grave of his master, the rot king (Henry), until he comes home. I should also note that Dave is masked (it’s a rabbit mask because of course the fuck it is) and cloaked at this point and his actual appearance isn’t shown until later.
Jack tries to talk more but Dave tries to kill him, just as he does Jack’s siblings appear. until he’s pulled aside by another spirit just in time. This spirit is Harry, who is a black bear spirit which initially scares Jack but he quickly realizes he’s a friend. Harry takes Jack “somewhere safe” because he claims the forest is not safe for mortals at night because that’s when the vestiges of the rot king come out and seek mortal souls to pull into the void to feed to their master. Dave isn’t technically an actual vestige, and does not have the ability to deliver souls to Henry. The reason for this is because being the sort of evil spirit Henry was, he commanded an army of lesser evil spirits who could only come out at night which greatly limited his power, so when he found Dave, he used Dave to be his servant during the day because as a neutral being of the forest, Dave was able to be out during both day and night.
Harry takes the Kennedy’s into his home inside a large tree, apparently recognizing Dee and scolding her for not listening when he said not to go out at night, where we are introduced to the other bear spirits/phone guys, Steven is a red panda which while technically not actually a bear I think fits, Jake is a grizzly who lost his cub, Roger is a sun bear, and Rebecca (no I didn’t forget about her), is a sloth bear.
The bears explain that they serve the forest king (the real Fredbear), a golden bear spirit that has dominion over all the forest during the day, and once had it during the night too. But then the rot king rose to power and for a time, he ruled both, until the forest king managed to banish him to the void with the help of an unstable ally, the spirit of wolftooth peak (Blackjack) who is a giant dark spirit taking the form of a wolf. The spirit of wolftooth peak however betrayed the forest king and refused to kill the rot king, in favour of torturing him for having previously destroyed the spirit of his sister by destroying her peak. This allowed the rot king to continue his reign from a distance during the night, so the forest king employed the 5 lesser bear spirits to protect the forest at night by rescuing any mortals that enter and fighting off the vestiges. The siblings were lucky that Dave stopped them before attacking actually because if they had come any closer to the grave, the dark magic would have put up a barrier the bears couldn’t cross.
The bears request that the siblings help them defeat the rot king once and for all before he regains his power and escapes, an act he’s close to doing. Peter claims this is above their capabilities, and wants to leave to protect his siblings, but Dee is having none of it, as she’s already bonded with many of the spirits and knows they’ll be hurt if the rot king rises to power. Knowing they can’t deter her, Peter and Jack make a promise to help the spirits by purifying corrupt spirits, an act done by helping them remember what they were before.
The kids go back home for awhile then, to their parents dismay as they had worried about them before, go out o the forest around noon, promising to be back by dusk. They meet up with the bears, and for the first time for all of them but Dee, meet the forest king. He thanks them for joining his cause and explains that the corrupted spirits are ones taken by the rot king and his vestiges and either forcefully corrupted, or in cases that are much more dangerous, manipulated into joining, he also talks to Dee like a close friend, and so does she, making it clear that Dee is also the one who knows the most about spirits and magic because of her friendship with the forest king.
Steven is the youngest of the bear spirits in this and has napoleon syndrome, so the other bears send him with the siblings to help him grow up, something he’s very unhappy with. Steven ends up riding on Peter’s shoulder for most of the story because he likes being tall and Peter is the tallest sibling.
The siblings and Steven are told to seek out a corrupted fawn spirit (Jacob Adams), Peter is given a magic staff (which Steven is immediately rude about him not holding right), Jack gets a sword, and Dee gets a healing wand. The fawn spirit has turned into a stag with long pointed horns, long legs, and sharp fangs. This battle almost ends in utter defeat as the group are terrible at working together as each just tries to do their own thing, eventually Jack manages to pull them together and they purify the spirit, turning it back into a fawn. The fawn thanks them and they help him get back home to his family, exploring the spirit town while they are there.
The next day they spend the early morning finally working together cleaning their new home, and their parents, who are still worried, decide things must be alright as the siblings are getting along better.
They meet back up with Steven, and are sent out to deal with 3 spirits this time, the 3 were friends and were corrupted together. The spirits in question are a nine tailed fox (Foxy, who both Steven and Peter agree sounds awesome), a phoenix (Chica), and a jackalope (Bonnie). Freddy will not show up yet, and rather than having the toys and the standard animatronics as two separate groups I decided to do something else.
They arrive at a long abandoned observatory, and at first don’t see anything, exept for the noticeable fact that every surface is covered in thick vines. Jack tries to cut the vines, but suddenly, they all come to life and start moving, a twisted and mangled fox head appears as do it’s hundreds of viney limbs, this spirit design will be inspired by a combination of mangle, and withered foxy. As the nine tailed and now 900 limbed fox spirit comes to life, so too do the other two spirits arrive, a flightless cockatrice (a combination of toy and withered Chica), and the blind centipede hare (toy and withered Bonnie). These corrupted spirits are incredibly hard to fight on their own but things get worse from here.
Having been alerted of the purification of the fawn, Dave and a corrupted bear monster based on the onikuma arrive to fight as well. The siblings barely make it out with their lives and Dee is taken by the onikuma.
Peter immediately quits when he returns, after demanding to know why no one ever told them about the onikuma, but Jack is sure Dee is still alive and refuses to quit, causing the brothers to fight. The onikuma is revealed to be a 6th bear guardians who was willingly corrupted and they didn’t mention because he normally stays in the bog.
Their parents refuse to let them go out again, and Dee is declared missing. Jack sneaks out at the dead of night, knowing how dangerous it is but going anyway, and he finds the tree. The bears are horrified, especially since he got quite injured by evil spirits on the way. He demands to know where Dee was taken and the bears reveal she’s likely been trapped at the bottom of the bog, which is a sort of nightmare pocket world the evil bear spirit keeps his child victims in. Jack asks how he can free her, and the bears reveal that the only way to get someone out of the bog is with fairy magic. Jack asks where he can find a fairy. The bears tell him that won’t be possible. There’s only one fairy in the forest, but this fairy is out of reach to them, all the others were sealed in the very tree the bears live in by the rot king, and as long as the king still lives, the fairies will never escape.
Jack gets frustrated and asks why this fairy is out of reach, and the bears explain that he’s already met the fairy, it tried to kill him when they first met, Jack figures out that the bears are telling him DAVE is a fairy. Jack is confused and horrified, he’d always been told fairies were tiny and cute, Dave is threatening and hostile, and around his own size. The bears explain that fairies are neutral tricksters, capable of changing size at will, and that this particular fairy was taken in, manipulated, and mutilated by the rot king who cut off Dave’s wings. He’s too devoted to ever be shaken from his goal.
Jack declares he’s going to purify Dave. The bears do not like that idea, and Steven refuses to come claiming it to be suicide. Jack claims he has to do it for his sister.
Jack gets his sword and goes out to fight Dave alone. He finds him sitting at the massive obelisk that is the rot king’s grave and seemingly praying to it.
When Jack approaches he immediately arms himself and demands to know why Jack is here. Jack claims he’s here to purify him, and Dave laughs in his face and then teases him about coming out on his own.
With that the fight begins, Dave removes his cloak to move faster which reveals that his clothes barely fit on him because of how thin he is (he was malnourished by Henry, and only leaves to eat once a week for 3 hours.) Dave far outpaces Jack, but he continues to be able to defend his attacks until dawn breaks, and during the fight Dave’s mask is knocked off outing him not only as a lizard boi, but also shows some of his scars from his abuse at the hands of Henry.
After a few more minutes Jack manages to get through to him and Dave breaks down crying, to which Jack comforts him. Purifying Dave causes the mask and cloak to turn to dust as those were the symptoms of his corruption which is a bit weird but I think it has to do with some of the other unique aspects of his situation. Also I’m not gonna make Dave’s lizardyness be his corruption because lizard boi is best boi, and he can’t just grow his wings back.
Jack decides to stop lying to his parents about where Dee is, and comes home with Dave, who may or may not have developed a crush on Jack when he comforted him.
After some convincing Jack manages to make his parents aware of everything so they can help, and convince Peter to help again.
Setting off with Peter, Steven, and Dave, Jack goes to the bog of the onikuma. After a long and difficult fight which included the onikuma summoning the other 3 corrupted spirits from before, they manage to win and purify all the spirits, setting Dee free with Dave’s magic.
Dee is acting like she never left as she has forgotten ever doing so alongside the 10 other kids locked down there with her.
The group returns to the forest king who despite being proud of everything achieved, such as Dave and the onikuma’s purification and Dee’s release from the bog, is rather grave, as he says it’s too late to stop the rot king’s returns.
The group asks if there’s absolutely no way to stop him, and the forest king admits there’s one, it would be to have the assistance of the spirit of wolftooth peak. The forest king also reveals that if the rot king dies, he does too, as the rot king is a part of him that split off. The rot king can survive without him in a weakened state, but he would die if the rot king were to die.
Somewhat conflicted, the group travels up the mountain, meeting the spirit of the peak. The giant wolf yells at them and fights them for their arrogance but is eventually convinced the rot king must die, and this isn’t what his sister would have wanted.
the group, now with the wolf spirit, travel into the void and meet the rot king face to face. He’s a being of pure decay in this who himself is rotting. Major nowhere king vibes. In an epic final confrontation all the characters but Jack are defeated, like in the game, but Jack manages to bring them all back by channeling energy through his sword.
The rot king is finally defeated. And thus begins the epilogue in which the Kennedy family vow that all future generations will protect the forest, the wolf of the peak finds peace and redemption, Dave decides to give up some of his power so he can grow up alongside Jack for totally not gay reasons, Steven is crowned as the new forest king and everyone lives happily ever after.
It’s a weird AU but I think it could be cool and I might make a fanfic about it, please give feedback and advice and as I’ve said, tell me who to draw first! <:

Hey I'm actually taking you up on the Asian film recommendations. Any genre except outright horror is a go! (:
You've come to the right person (I abhor horror and would never recommend that to anyone)! <3
I will preface this by saying that everyone should watch Fullmetal Alchemist if they haven't already LOL it truly the best anime ever. 10 stars for Arakawa! My second-ranked anime is Naruto, but Kishimoto's depictions of females is laughable at best and downright sexist at worst lmao. I recently binged Spy x Family too, which I really enjoyed!
Off the top of my head, some recommendations I have are:
Ghibli films (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for all tbh, Ghibli never disappoints): Kiki's Delivery Service Whisper of the Heart Howl's Moving Castle Spirited Away Castle in the Sky and the usual suspects :) honorary mention goes to Kimi no na Wa because I was a total wreck on the plane watching that show (and I got to visit the iconic staircase irl that inspired that scene this year, which was a real treat!).
Dramas: 花より男子 Hana Yori Dango (aka Boys Over Flowers; there are also Korean and Taiwanese adaptations of the same) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Goong/Princess Hours (a real Korean classic, also the cast is so attractive) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ King of Baking 🍞🍞🍞🍞🍞 Vagabond (not horror, but there are elements of thriller! the budget for this was insane lmao and it had me so on edge I had to go through the episodes at 1.5x speed hahaha) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Witch at Court ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Business Proposal (had such a fun time bingeing this one with @tsaritsa) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Familiar Wife ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Extraordinary Attorney Woo ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Shooting Stars (the male lead is so my type lmao) ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Little Women (both the movie directed by Greta Gerwig, and the k-drama that came out not too long ago haha!!) ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tearjerkers (includes both films and dramas; this is going to be a long list because this is my ultimate guilty pleasure):
Japanese *1リットルの涙 1 Litre of Tears (warning: the title lives up to its name. make sure tissues are accessible at all times) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Midnight Sun (there is a drama and movie available; the drama lead is played by YUI, who sang FMA's 'Again'!) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Koizora (translates to 'Sky of Love') ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My Rainy Days ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Korean A Millionaire's First Love ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ No Breathing (my friend and I walked out of the cinema drenched in tears lmao the actors really ate and left no crumbs) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Beethoven's Virus (@nightofnyx8 I feel like you would love this, plus the OST makes me cry every time...) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 200 Pounds Beauty ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Taiwanese 那些年 (Na Xie Nian / Those Bygone Years -- I think the official English title was 'The Apple of my Eye') ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Our Times / 我的少女時代 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
As an aside, the movie adaptation of Rurouni Kenshin was actually stellar and the only film adaptation of anime that I personally deem acceptable (let's not talk about the FMA movies... 😂). Another one that will always hold dear to my heart is Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (Cloud was my very first kid-crush before I even knew what that was lmao).
I'm sure everyone has heard of Everything Everywhere All at Once by now -- that was truly spectacular and wacky, I loved it!
Lowkey obliged to recommend Crazy Rich Asians since it was filmed in my hood, but if I'm being brutally honest this movie was probably a 5/10 at best for my bf and I lol, I personally preferred Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby (10 ⭐️s from me). Speaking of Constance Wu, Fresh Off the Boat was really funny (also available on Disney+ I think)!
Most of these should be available on Netflix, if not Youtube/other random online sources should work (and generally have subtitles as well)! Most if not all of the above have AMAZING OSTs as well :')
Happy watching, dearest! 💕 and of course if anyone has any further recs feel free to drop them :)
#asks#films#dramas#recs#as bong joon ho said#'Once you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles#you will be introduced to so many more amazing films'
