My favorite shows and movies that i've watched in 2023
Barbie (2023)
Always been a sucker for great production and costume design. Feminism aside, it’s so fun and smart with all the references. I just don’t like the Ken hype. He’s fun, sure, but a lot of fans are missing the point or just proving the message of the story.
Bottoms (2023)
Need more lesbian chaos as a comedy fan. Sapphic softcore is ok of course, but you know, there should be a variety of WLW cinema. Perfect also for the Y2K nostalgia. ‘Bring It On’ fan here!
Nocebo (2022)
I actually watched it last year, but it was too late to be on my 2022 list. Underrated political-horror film. Underrated cast! It should’ve had the same hype with Parasite and Triangle of Sadness. For me, it was simple and well-written. The structure of the story was smart but easy to absorb.
About Us But Not About Us (2022)
The first and last single-location film that I watched was Kisaragi (2007) and I’ve been waiting for something like that since then. One of the most important things i look for a media is the script so i really enjoyed it especially when they switched characters. Very intriguing.
The Little Mermaid (2023)
Been waiting for this since 2019! I’ve been a fan of Halle Bailey since that announcement. I rarely watch things on the cinema, but it’s something i couldn’t miss. Beautiful, pure and magical. Perfect casting and amazing chemistry!
Si Chedeng At Si Apple (2017)
Another chaotic lesbian film, but make it Filipino! It was funny and bloooody just like Bottoms so if you liked it then you should try this one. Not a spoiler, but part of the plot: That lady in yellow killed her abusive husband.
Maria Clara At Ibarra (2022)
I haven’t finished it yet! But i would recommend it! Brought back my trust and love for Filipino series. If you are not Filipino, it’s a good way to learn our history. Fun, written with passion + great set and costume design.
Mga Lihim Ni Urduja (2023)
After Maria Clara at Ibarra, i became more interested in Filipino series especially with historical fiction. This one is so underrated and empowering! Has the prettiest and hottest cast tbh and a queer undertone *wink*
Betcin (2021)
I have to say that this is the best Filo GL/WLW so far. It has an actual interesting story and interesting characters. Both leads are toxic AF, but it was sooooo entertaining. Top tier chemistry. Top tier acting!
Swarm (2023)
As a Beyhive, i don’t really like how they chose us coz there are more crazy fandoms out there, but still watched and finished it because of Dominique Fishback. SHE IS AMAZING. She deserves awards for this portrayal alone.
Ang Babae Sa Septik Tank 3: The Real Untold Story of Josephine Bracken (2011)
Another mockumentary that is to die (of laughter) for! I’ve always wanted to finish the trilogy, but i started with this because of history. Frustratingly funny. I don’t know if i would root for her or not lmao
The ultimatum: Queer love (2023)
I admit, watching reality shows is my guilty pleasure so imagine my excitement when it’s full of queer women??? The dramaaaa lmao i need more seasons of just sapphics. It’s also a cool and chaotic concept tho. I thought it was just a normal dating show at first.
Physical 100 (2023)
This is my kind of reality show! I hope it will have multiple versions from different countries. The best thing about it is how fitness is really measured by getting competitors from different backgroundsand giving them different challenges.
Rookie (2023)
The most anticipated movie of the Filipino sapphics! And if you’re a volleyball fan? I’m sure this would be automatically on your list. It’s just so cute and wholesome.
Ladies First: A story of women in Hip Hop (2023)
Must watch! Not only for the history of the rap girlies, but to trace back the struggles they faced and are still facing. You might discover talented women to stan in your music or lyrical style too.

I wanna say thank you for knocking some sense into me. I've been struggling with the after affects of a toxic friend group that consisted of 7 girls who all were proclaimed 'nymphets' after a while they roped me in their mindset and it kinda went downhill from there. I never wanted to turn out like this and what you said really kinda opened my eyes to the really morbid and disgusting reality that is this 'nymphet' community. I want to get better after this realization I really do but I have no clue where to start because I want to be able to enjoy the community around the book and the movies (even if they were poorly told) ((Dolores was a ton boy not some girly girl in dresses or skimpy clothes)) I think im going to talk to my therapist when we meet in 1-2 weeks but until then do you have any advice on how I can heal?
First of all I think you should stay away from the movies.
These are not "poorly told". They are intentionally softcore CSEM (child sexual explotation material).
Sue Lyon was just just TWELVE when she was casted.
And for Lolita 1997:
You are literally posting stills of softcore CSEM. You are posting stills of CHILD PORNOGRAPHY, and talking how much you want that to happen to you. The producers/directors literally wanted to make CSEM and had to restrain himself just a tiny little bit because anti CSEM laws.
Did you know Menarche has gotten lower in the last years, right? Female puberty starts at around 8 years old, Humbert nowadays would want to rape 8 year old girls.
This is what Humbert speaks of when he talks of Nymphets.
Humbert is attracted to early breast development (8 to 12 years), to menarche (8 to 13), early armpit hair and so on.
When Dolores has the normal body development of a 13 year old in the 1940's, he calls it advanced age and begins to get tired of her. Do you know why? Because he is fixated on 1920's european little girls who were stressed and starved during WW2.
Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita. Part 1, Chapter 5.
Anarchy: A journal of DESIRE ARMED (Issue #19, May-July 1989, "Save the children" by Richard Walters), a pro CSA publication, WHICH ARGUED FOR EVEN THE SEXUAL ABUSE OF NEWBORNS.
When you like Humbert, this is what you like. You can trace back ALL of his arguments to actual real life pro contact pedohebephiles. Is that what you want?
When you see this, do you call her a "nymphet"? You should, since you believe they are real. This is what Humbert thinks is a "demon child", not this
When you post stills of poor Sue Lyon, do you stop to think this child had her life ruined and was raped on set? When you post Dominique Swain, do you think about how she said the role ruined her life?
When you think of your handsome Humbert Humbert, do you think of this? How he calls himself foul smelling? How he calls himself hairy, with aging ape eyes?
And above all, do you think of people like me, who had the "fortune" to be what you want to be when we were as young as 2, 3, 5, 10 year old? Do you think of incest victims? Did you ever think of the fact Dolores was being raped by her dad?
When you think of calling yourself Lolita, nymphet, do you ever think of the CSEM forum "Lolita City", the ages shown here, of all these girls whose rape was filmed? If you wanted to be "Lolita" or a nymphet so bad, why weren't you going out of your way to do this to yourself? I am sure you would find a Humbert there!
Or better: Don't.
Do you remember how Humbert married poor Charlotte and then killed her to gain acess to little Lola? Well, I do.
Do you know who Peter Scully is?
He is currently serving a life sentence in the Philippines for trafficking, child pornography, the murder of a 12-year-old girl, and the torture and sexual abuse of at least eight girls, including a 1-and-a-half-year-old girl.
He is the author of the infamous Daisy's dest...do I even have to say it?
And was the owner of Hurt2TheCore, a snuff/pedosadism csem page. He is also accused of creating the pedosadist and murder and torture international net No Limits Fun.
Anyways, why the mention of him and of Hurt2TheCore? Well, of course, here is the people who post there:
Oh, yes, Humbert in real life. Is this what you want?
Stay away from the movies and go back to the novel. Get into the musical. Read analysis of the book. Go read books about CSEM forums. Memoirs of real life incest victims. of rape victims. That's how you "enjoy" Lolita.
And from a real Life Lolita to you, a wannabe, I hope the world NEVER teaches you what being Dolores Haze in real life is like.

Total Drama Movies- Episode 3- Total Drama FC
*Cabins, Morning time*
Charlotte: Francesca, love, I’ve been thinking. Do you want to form an alliance? Taniyah is in on it too. Fangxiu, Cece & Fredrick have been annoying so if we get 3 voting the same person, we’ll likely prevail.
Taniyah: Mhm!
Francesca: Oh, alright, sure! Maybe can we invite Leo? I didn’t tell you guys yet but we’re going on a date!
Charlotte: Oh my, How wondrous! Sure, we can invite him if you want!
Fangxiu: *spying on them* (Jiafei scream) AHH 😱 THE GIRLIES ARE TEAMING UP AGAINST ME! I MUST TEAM UP OR I’LL GET MY WEAVE SNATCHED😔😔 LOOKS LIKE I GOTTA TEAM UP WITH.. Rich girl or Sigma.. Hmm….
*Next cabin over*
Rajiv: Yoo, Kenny bro, what are you gonna do with the million dollars?
Kenny: Ultimate sound studio.. And a diamond ring for Dominique… 😏 I’ll hafta propose by then. How about you?
Rajiv: How expensive is infinite money? Can I get it for one mil?
Eddy: Erm… that’s scientifically inaccurate…
Sigita: *From room over* SHUT UP!
*Eddy sadly sits back down, and Wyatt laughs*
*Loud airhorn sounds off*
Chris: MY ACTORS AND ACTRESSES! GET ON SET!
Dominique: Thanks Chris… Great way to wake up…
Fredrick: Yeah!🍷🗿 Take… this! *Farts directly at Chris*
Chris: Luckily I got this electric fan. *Blows it right back at Fredrick*
Fredrick: Augh!-🍷🗿😱😱😱🤢🤮
Chris: Phew, it’s hot out.. I got my fan, but for you guys, you’re gonna be outside all day! We are playing… SOCCER! Or football for any brits out there…
Pietro: Aw yeah bro! Its our time to finally shine!
Roman: Yeah man! *High fives Pietro*
Boris: Yes!
Ines: Finally, a challenge to show off strength!
Chris: The Mighty Wizards will be against the Fearless Warriors, and the Ferocious Monsters will be againt 4th Thing! The team to get to 3 goals on both fields will be safe! The 2 losing teams will go up against eachother and whichever team loses that will be up for elimination! GO!
*MIGHTY WIZARDS V. FEARLESS WARRIORS*
Leopold: Let’s crush them!
Cece: Let’s not lose please..
Andres: We could take down these punks easily!
Pietro: Hell yeah! Let’s get em!
Boris: I’ll be goalie.
*The Wizards barely beat the Warriors, 3-2*
*FEROCIOUS MONSTERS V 4TH THING*
Jamil: I’ve been thinking, if we intentionally lose this, then we can vote off Bailey! What do you think guys?
Eliza: Sure! I’ll be a terrible goalie!
Maxim: I’m down!
Ines: Worth a shot, wanted to show my strength though.
Jamil: We can win one but then miraculously fail, alright?
*4th Thing crushes Ferocious Monsters, 3-1*
Wyatt: Haha! Boi.. 😂 What da flip.. 😂😂🤣🤣
Sigita: Oh, Wyatt! You’re such a great goalie!
Chris: Alright, 4th Thing & Wizards, you two teams are safe from elimination! Monsters & Warriors, you two will be in a final round of soccer. Leopold and Eliza stay goalies! Whichever one scores a point first wins. Go!
Ines: I’m starting to think that maybe we should try to win… We’d be smallest team by far, 2 less people than both the Warriors & Wizards… They can still help, just don’t let them take advantage of us!
Jamil: We’ve already initiated the plan! It’s gotta go through!
Ines: You know what, No! I’m not doing the plan! I’m going to win this!
*Ines kicks soccer ball towards goal, and it reaches the net, but Leopold throws the ball back*
Leopold: Oh yeah? Well how about this!
*Leopold kicks ball into net, Eliza misses, Wizards are safe*
Jamil: Phew!
Ines: NOO!!
Chris: Monsters, I’ll see you tonight, AGAIN!
*After challenge*
Francesca: Charlotte!! I’m so excited, I’ve never been on a date before! Can you help me get ready?
Charlotte: Darling, you don’t need help, you’re perfect already!
Taniyah: Yeah girl, he’ll like you for sure!
Francesca: Thank you, alright, I’m ready! We were gonna meet by the dock at 4pm!
*At the dock*
*Francesca gets there early, and waits on a bench*
Francesca: Its 10 past 4 and he still isn’t here…
*Francesca waits 10 more minutes till she decides to go to his cabin. She knocks on the door and there’s a bit of a wait before Fredrick opens the door*
Fredrick: Francesca, inferior woman, what happened? 🗿
Francesca: Uh… don’t call me that… but Leo, where is he?
Fredrick: Oh… You must come in…
(The room is dingy, yet spaceous since it’s only shared by 2 contestants. The room lingers of Fredrick’s underwear.)
(Leopold Lays in his bed with cast on his foot)
Francesca: Oh no!! What happened?!
Leopold: I think I kicked the ball too hard… My foot is too injured… I just need… some… rest…
Francesca: Please do!! Feel better Leo! We can have our date whenever you feel better!
(Elimination Ceremony. The six up for elimination are:
Bailey, the Compulsive Liar,
Eliza, the Theatre Kid,
Grace, the Preppy,
Ines, the Tough One,
Jamil, the Army Cadet and
Maxim, the Bookworm)
Chris: Okay, the six of you have casted your votes!
Jamil: Hey, Ines, I’m sorry for making you do something you didn’t want to do… It’s just I really wanted Bailey out.
Ines: Yeah, it’s okay. Don’t get me wrong she is annoying as hell!
Chris: STOP INTERRUPTING! If I call your name, you will be safe, and you will get a “Golden Chris Award”!
INES!
Ines: Phew!
GRACE!
Grace: It’s so preppy in here 🥰🥰😘
MAXIM!
Maxim: Nice!
ELIZA!
Eliza: Woohoo!
Chris: The final two… Army Cadet and Liar… The last one safe is…
Jamil. Bailey, you little liar, you gotta go! Get out!
Grace: NOO 🥺🥺 my only ally 🥺🥺 you’re the only one besides me that’s not like the other girls 😝 oh well… See you Bailey..
Bailey: Oh well, I already have a mansion!
Chris: Yeah, mhm.. Sure.
Will Smith Robot: KEEEEEP. MY WIIIIFE’S. NAAAME. OUUUTCHA. FREEEAKING. MOUUTH!!!
Bailey: AAAAAAAGHHHHHH!!!!
*Bailey screams as she flies off*
Chris: Heheh, what an annoying human being. Glad she wasn’t staying any longer! There are only 25 left. Who will go next? Maybe you’ll just have to see the next episode in a few days! See you in Episode 4!

Yesterday I posted a poll about what kind of look I should do to myself, since doing my makeup is a huge part of my self-esteem and self-care. It makes me feel better about myself when I get that bomb selfie, I’m doing something that requires thought, attention to detail, and a little bit of skill (but trust me, not nearly as much as you think).
I have a plethora of wigs, some of them higher quality, one that was prescription when I went through chemo and lost my hair in 2016 and is nothing short of incredible, and a lot that are cheap and were procured at Halloween. A few were gifts, and a few came from a fundraiser that was done in my honour in September of 2016.
Let’s talk the basics, which were the same makeups I used right across the board, and what I used in between so my face wouldn’t scream bloody murder at me by the end of the night after doing four very different makeups.
Makeup:
Mary Kay TimeWise Matte-Wear Liquid Foundation in Ivory 3 and Dermacol Foundation in 211
Sephora Collection Airbrush Foundation in Cream
Duo Latex Free Dark Lash Glue
NYX Milk Eye Shadow Primer
Too-Faced Better Than Sex Mascara
Tools:
Beauty Blenders (three; two regular and one mini), damp and warm
Sephora Pro Collection 53 Fan Brush
Lancôme Flat-Head Blush Brush 75
Removal and Treatment:
Farmacy Green Clean Cleansing Balm
Dead Sea Oasis Cleansing Towels for Dry Skin
Dior Capture One Essential Serum
Guerlain Abeille Royale Youth-Boosting Oil
Farsáli Volcanic Elixir (two drops blended with)
LaNeige Water Bank Hydrating Creme (did I mention I have dry skin?)
So while I was doing these makeups, it snowed, heavily. And it snowed the day before that. Also, all day Saturday and into the evening. I live in Canada and winter decided to arrive all at once.
With the Cotton Candy and Blonde looks already done, my fiancé and I ran some errands and then returned home where I could complete my challenge.
Ginger:
With foundation and highlighter placed in the usual spots using damp Beauty Blenders and a patting technique, I was able to get the porcelain finish that I may have a bit of a complex for. As for a blush that would match the ginger wig that Xan gave me that smells amazingly like Downey fabric softener, I chose Estée Lauder Blushing Rose and swished it on with Lancôme’s 75 Blush Brush. With a heavier hand and using the side of the 75 brush I was able to push some contour under my cheekbone.
Eyebrows and eyeshadows were both by MAC, and while the shadows were open-panned and unnamed, they were both pearlescent, one being ivory and placed at the inside corners of my eyes, and the other bronze. A warm shade like this went well with the wig, while the ivory complimented my complexion and wig. Remember with having a certain undertone to the skin — rose, neutral, gold — there are certain colours that look amazing, while others may not be particularly flattering. Brows were drawn on with Veluxe Brow Pencil in Redhead.
Ash-Lash lashes in the style Cherry were glued into place with Duo Dark Latex Free Lash Glue and feathered into each other using Better Than Sex. I prefer falsies to mascara because secretly I’m a drama makeup queen and need to have the thickest, longest, blacket lashes.
Normally, there are colours I can’t wear — basically anything with a warm or golden undertone, since I’m on the rosier side of neutral — but with the deep copper wig and a little bit of neutral-based foundation and highlight, I could fake a warmer finish with the ivory and bronze shadows, a warm-toned blush, and a brick red lip.
In case you friends haven’t figured out yet that as much as I don’t agree with Kat Von D’s beliefs, I do love her formulas when it comes to cosmetics. The Everlasting Lip Stain? Amazing on my lips. That isn’t to say that everyone will love them, but I sure do. The colour I picked for my lips was Santa Sangre, overdrawing them just the tiniest bit to create a very full pout, and finished it off with a touch of Thunderstruck, also by KVD but in her Glimmer Veil, and a slap of Buxom’s Full-On Plumping Lip Gloss in Dominique finished everything up.
Black:
For my final look, I really wanted to make a departure from how blacker-than-the-blackest-black-times-infinity the wig was and try something very soft, ultimately girly, and not goth in the slightest. I know, I know, that’s unlike me.
After patting on Dermacol’s rose-based 211 foundation and highlighting it with Sephora Collection Airbrush Foundation in Cream, I used Santee Blush 04 to give a rosy glow to my cheeks. I focused on the apples of my cheeks, and moved on to my eyes.
I primed the lid and went to my Naked 3 palette, picking a single rosy shade — Burnout — and blending it back and forth using my ring fingertip. There is nothing wrong with using fingers to apply makeup, so long as the applicator knows how much pressure to use, which fingers, and so on. For this single shade, yep, I used my ring finger, and then went back to my primer — this time, Glitter Glue by Too-Faced — and placed it on the inside corners of my eyes. What for? Makeup For Ever Star Lit Diamond Powder 104, which is an iridescent blue-white shimmer, of course!
No sense in wearing eyeliner when I was going for a super nude finish, and speaking of finishes! For lashes, I went with Mink 3D Lash in D09 and with a line of Duo Lash Glue and a press of Better Than Sex, and I was nearly done.
A tiny bit of definition provided by Hover by MAC gave my lips the plush shape they needed, and some Blizzard gloss by Chanel polished everything off. Muah × 4! xoxo, Sarah
A Four-Makeup Challenge — Part Two Yesterday I posted a poll about what kind of look I should do to myself, since doing my makeup is a

NAME: Delta Davenport
AGE: 28
BIRTHDAY: March 25th, 1990
OCCUPATION: University track coach
HOMETOWN: Louisiana, USA
PETS: Betta fish named Alpha and a Vizsla named Echo
BIOGRAPHY:
Delta grew into her personality from a very young age - at just five years old, she insisted on a Halloween costume that would later turn out to be who she was at her core. She wore a pretty dress with fairy wings (much to her fathers’ protest), then made her mom put face paint on her, grabbed a baseball cap from her father’s collection, and then grabbed a bat before rolling around on the ground a few times to get a desired affect. To Delta, fairy princesses should be able to play baseball, too. And as she got older, her ‘girly’ personality never wavered, nor did her never ending energy. However, though she didn’t ‘look’ the part, she was a hardcore sports fanatic, and she’s not above getting into a bar fight over a sports team.
Her father was extremely pushy when it came to 'practice’ but Delta never did mind, because she loved getting to spend time with him and getting better and better. Come university, she got a full ride scholarship for track, quickly becoming a MVP, but that didn’t stop her from going out for the baseball team; and making it. She was the only girl on the team, but that never slowed her down. From there, she got into competitive cheer, and decided to pledge with a sorority that she was legacy to (her older sister of five years). Anyone who spends time with Delta, knows she can be a little (or a lot) exhausting, what with her never ending energy and optimism - but tell her she can’t do something because she’s a girl and she puts all that energy into proving that person wrong.
Now, Delta coaches the track team at the same university she graduated from, and runs marathons every year just for fun. She’s up every morning at six, just so she can have a good ten kilometre run, which often includes resistance bands and limb weights. She’s excitable and always up for adventure, so when the opportunity arose to become part of IKAG, nothing was going to stop her from making the trip to London.

Hyperallergic: Francis Picabia’s Prescient, Painterly Promiscuousness
Francis Picabia, “Tableau Rastadada” (Rastadada Painting, 1920), cut‑and‑pasted printed paper on paper with ink, 7 1/2 × 6 3/4″ (19 × 17.1 cm), the Museum of Modern Art, New York, gift of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller by exchange (© 2016 Artist Rights Society, ARS, New York/ADAGP, Paris; photo courtesy the Museum of Modern Art, Peter Butler)
Like an egg in a sizzling skillet, your brain on Picabia may have its synapses fried at the Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMA) comprehensive retrospective of this underappreciated master. MoMA’s mouthful of a title, Our Heads Are Round so Our Thoughts Can Change Direction, doesn’t begin to describe this volatile eyeful of a show. Francis Picabia, born wealthy and independent enough to do what he wanted, was charismatic, multitalented, and sharp enough to exercise his privilege. Starting at 26, Picabia rapidly transfigured his painting from faux Impressionism to Cubism to Dada, followed subsequently by several series unmoored from any art movement. Thirty years ago, viewers may have found the dramatic shifts in his work bewildering; today it’s obvious that he was an artistic driving force of the 20th century.
Picabia, a pioneering modernist, has long been known as an early cubist and a leader of the anarchic Dada movement, while his later work has gone mostly ignored. But the cultural transition from the monolithic austerity of modernism to postmodernism’s pluralistic deconstruction of meaning altered the way we view artists’ careers. Our idea of the artistic self has expanded from the fixed brand of a signature style to a concept of branching decisions made by an evolving personality in a fluid cultural context. Generations of painters as diverse as Sigmar Polke and Nicole Eisenman seem to have absorbed Picabia’s example that it’s possible for an artist to reject consistency of style without losing coherence of thinking.

From the very beginning of his career, Picabia displayed an impressive talent and rigor, along with a willingness to flout established taste. He achieved an early reputation as a major painter with massive, Impressionist landscapes, which begin this exhibition. Though constructed one thick brushstroke at a time, they were rather subversively painted from postcards rather than en plein air, emphasizing structure over ideology.
Disdaining a conventional career of quick sales and critical praise, Picabia abandoned his gallery and rapidly painted more abstractly as he absorbed the challenges being made by his more sophisticated peers. In 1912, he was astute and talented enough to start making and showing gigantic, fully realized takes on Cubism just a year after the first Cubist paintings were shown at the Salon d’Automne. Though at the time critics perceived only an incomprehensible heap of red and black linoleum shavings when contemplating “The Spring” (1912), today our practiced eyes can organize the fractured forms into several figures cavorting in a shallow pictorial space. His brand of Cubism didn’t deconstruct individual brushstrokes, like Picasso’s, but the style was new enough that he achieved an immediate succès de scandale and wound up in the Armory Show in New York City, where he discovered a love for controversy and publicity.

Guggenheim Foundation, Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, 1976 (© 2016 Artists Rights Society, ARS, New York/ADAGP, Paris)
Rarely spending more than a few years exploring a particular path, Picabia abandoned the laborious complexity of Cubism following World War I and went on to help found Dada. In this phase, he made irreverent but inventive, well-crafted portraits of machine parts he called mechanomorphs. Although at the time he was celebrated as a provocateur, his paintings are rarely flippant, and there was intense effort and sincerity in even his most radical gestures. In “Very Rare Picture on the Earth” (1915), a work that could have inspired Peter Halley, Picabia not only uses oil paint but experiments with metallic paint, and introduces gold- and silver-leafed shallow reliefs as real depictions of pictorial volume in the flattened diagrammatic space. It’s believed he even constructed the frame.
At 43, after lingering seven years with the Dadaists, he tired of their predictably unconventional antics. It was then that Picabia left established styles behind and found a way to synthesize his skill, radicality, and ingenuity into a series of formal inventions. These include a wild short film, “Entr’acte,” made as an intermission for Relâche, the ballet he produced with Eric Satie in 1924. The film, directed by René Clair from Picabia’s screenplay, involved innovative dissolves and edits, a flooded chess match with Duchamp and Man Ray, abstract dots, a bearded ballerina, and a funeral, which ends with the resurrected corpse popping through the “FIN” of the closing title.

The “Monster” paintings that followed were painted with industrial enamel and show embracing couples disintegrating into abstraction. Then came the Transparencies, large, dreamy superimpositions of translucently painted image overlays on wood. These were succeeded by the eclectic material and image experiments that foreshadowed World War II, like the spooky, skeleton-filled “The Spanish Revolution” (1937) or the deliberately clotted-varnish face in “Portrait of a Woman” (1935–37). Picabia constantly invented ways of painting, taking formal leaps that made the medium do what it hadn’t done before and coming up with new ways of disrupting the idea of interpretation. These works require only close scrutiny of their complexly painted surfaces for Picabia’s mastery to become obvious. Bear with me, then, for jumping ahead to examine one painting in the penultimate gallery, where nothing has quite prepared us for the work we find here.

In 1941, at 62, self-exiled to a chateau in the south of Nazi-occupied France, Francis Picabia painted “Women with Bulldog” on a 42″ x 30″ board. The work depicts two women, blond and brunette, on a blue-sheeted bed, a disgruntled white and black bulldog occupying the foreground. The blonde, completely naked and gazing to her right, is crouched over the dog in a soft-core cheesecake pose with heavy-lidded eyes, parted ruby lips, exposed lustrous teeth, and wavy locks. The brunette, reclining in the background, also appears to be naked, but is covered to her waist by a brown feather boa, with a dreamy expression produced by softly closed eyes. The two glamorous nudes are facilely modeled in a style which owed nothing to any of the painting traditions of the 19th or 20th centuries, but to the photography in girly magazines.
But it is through the easily ignored, diamond-patterned window in the background that this odd vignette doubles down on its perversity. Some have charged that Picabia’s intent was merely to titillate, or to glorify perfect Aryan bodies for the Germans. Had that been the case, however, he could have stopped with the two women and the dog — whose peculiarly brooding expression alone complicates the eroticism.
Francis Picabia, “Femmes au bull-dog” (Women with Bulldog, c. 1941), oil on board, 41 3/4 x 29 15/16″ (106 x 76 cm), Centre Pompidou, Musée national d’art moderne – Centre de création industrielle, Paris, purchase from a public sale, 2003 (© 2016 Artist Rights Society, ARS, New York/ADAGP, Paris; photo © Centre Pompidou, MNAM-CCI/Jean-Claude Planchet/Dist. RMN–Grand Palais/Art Resource, New York)
Outside the window of this cozy, dark bedroom is a barren, snowy landscape consisting of a leafless tree, a celadon sky filled with burgeoning gray clouds over a mountain, and a field dotted with a series of strange, faint footprints. Though ostensibly it’s a mere background note, the landscape is painted with such expressionistic sincerity and detail, it throws off the emotional balance of the whole scene. A mysterious cluster of red berries is also, absurdly, included at the top of the painting.
Many viewers, even those accustomed to the profane spirit of Dada, have found the uncanny, photo-based mise-en-scenes in this room, all painted during the war, embarrassing, lacking any conventional indicators to mark them as modern. Disturbingly uncategorizable and puzzling, the paintings have been casually labeled as kitsch by most critics in order to dismiss them.
No stable interpretation has, to my knowledge, ever been presented that explains these paintings. What attitude might we adopt, for instance, towards “Woman with Idol” (c. 1940–43)? It focuses so intently on the precise rendering of a garter button fastening a black stocking to the leg of a topless woman, it takes a moment to see she’s kneeling in the arms of a loosely painted bronze statue, and another until we notice the carefully nuanced light seeping through slatted windows in the darkened room. Then, in the bizarrely bleak “Hanged Pierrot” (1940–41), a woman in white demurely mourns the titular lynched clown, distracting us from the spatial complexity of the pine tree from which he dangles. There are so many changes in tone in even a single painting; we are rudderless to steer an approach to meaning.

Francis Picabia, “Lâcheté de la barbarie subtile (Carte à jouer)” (Cowardice of Subtle Barbarism (Playing Card), 1949), oil on board, 29 15/16 × 20 1/2″ (76 × 52 cm), private collection (courtesy Galerie Michael Werner, Märkisch Wilmersdorf, Cologne and New York, © 2016 Artist Rights Society, ARS, New York/ADAGP, Paris; photo courtesy Galerie Michael Werner)
But that is exactly the lesson that viewing Picabia teaches. Meaning in painting isn’t fixed, but contingent and constantly reinvented. Painting is an invitation for viewers to feel complicated emotions, create their own understanding, question their preconceptions, and explore the decisions an artist has made to keep meaning from becoming stagnant and determined. At the end of his life, Picabia switched to biomorphic abstraction and then finished by painting dots on colored fields. Never relinquishing his desire for change, Picabia created work that, in its unfathomablenesss, forces viewers to confront the mechanisms of ambivalence and confusion that lie at the heart of our confrontations with the world.
Francis Picabia: Our Heads Are Round so Our Thoughts Can Change Direction continues at the Museum of Modern Art (11 W 53rd Street, Midtown, Manhattan) through March 19.
