James Earl Jones, RIP
Just heard the heartbreaking news, one of the greatest, most awesome and all time INCREDIBLE actors of all time, as well as one of the sweetest, kindest and most selfless human beings ever, has passed away. The seemingly immortal James Earl Jones, one of the most famous actors of his generation, well respected on both big and small screens AND on the stage for over SEVEN DECADES, respeonsible for portraying some of my favourite screen characters ever ... this might be the one that hurts me the most this year ...
Of course, like everybody, he will FOREVER be most closely associated with Star Wars, as the voice of probably the greatest screen villain of all time, Darth Vader.
But he was also King Jaffe Joffer, the father of Eddie Murphy's wayward prince in Coming to America and its sequel ...
The Counter Culture author Terence Mann in the magnificent Field of Dreams, as well as ...
NSA Agent Abbott in director Phil Alden Robinson's next film, the underrrated suspense thriller Sneakers ...
Simba's dad Mufasa in The Lion King ...
Jack Ryan's CIA boss and father figure, Admiral Jim Greer, in The Hunt For Red October, Patriot Games AND Clear & Present Danger ...
Lt. Luther Zogg in one of my favourite screen comedies of all time, Stanley Kubrick's Dr Strangelove, Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying & Love the Bomb (his VERY FIRST big screen role) ...
and, of course, MY very favourite role that he EVER PLAYED, the role I will always MOST FONDLY remember him for, one of my very favourite ever screen villains, the dastardly ancient wizard Thulsa Doom in Conan the Barbarian.
Oh yeah, and also those brilliant and thoroughly hilarious Sprint adverts in which he and Malcolm McDowell would read out inane social media posts with the utmost gravitas as though it was Shakespeare ...
The man had an AMAZING RUN, and he is guaranteed to go down as one of the all time greats, beloved around the world and destined to become one of the true icons of the 20th AND 21st Centuries, remembered LONG after his passing. But he's STILL gone far too soon ...
James Earl Jones, January 17th 1931 - September 9th 2024. Rest In Power.

Top 10 Portrayals of Inspector Lestrade
Having just finished my list of my favorite fictional detectives, I felt it was time to return to my absolute favorite of the bunch: Sherlock Holmes. In the past, I have done lists related to Holmes himself, as well as his friend and colleague, Dr. Watson, and his arch-nemesis, Professor Moriarty. I recently revisited those three countdowns to see if I would change anything, and…at the moment, no, I think they’re still pretty solidly set. HOWEVER, I’ve never gone over any of the other major characters in the Sherlock Holmes universe since those three. I haven’t covered his other allies, or any other noteworthy antagonists he faced. So, I decided it was time to fix that problem. These lists WILL have descriptions, but they’ll be very brief, partially just because I don’t have a TON to say about most of the characters/portrayals involved. We’ll start off with a Top 10 devoted to Scotland Yard’s most competent detective, Inspector Lestrade.
In the books, Lestrade is one of Holmes’ closest compatriots. While the super sleuth frequently interacts with various Scotland Yard officers, Lestrade is the most recurring, and has the most rapport with Sherlock. Their relationship is an…interesting one, to say the least. On the one hand, the two do care about each other, and there is some level of mutual respect under their respective, prickly surfaces. However, the pair bicker constantly, and always seem to be trying to one-up each other. Holmes concedes that Lestrade is probably the best detective at the Yard, but with the caveat that he is “the best of a bad bunch.” Lestrade, meanwhile, often tries to downplay Holmes’ unique skills in favor of boosting his own ego, and is forever frustrated by Sherlock’s antics. At the same time, he recognizes Holmes is very helpful to himself and the force, and for all his faults, he always manages to help the Inspector catch the crooks in the end. Indeed, the main reason Lestrade usually fails is because he ironically tends to jump the gun: he’s someone who fails to look at the big picture, or else notice the smaller details, which is what Holmes is very good at. If he just took his time more, he could probably get to the bottom of things more quickly…but Holmes can do all that in an instant, so it’s a good thing he’s hanging around. Different interpretations throughout adaptations and reimaginings of the Holmes universe have reinterpreted Lestrade in a number of ways (and with no less than two different pronunciations of his name; “Leh-strawed” seems to be the most common, but a couple choose to say “Less-trade”). Some versions of him are more comical and bungling, while some are more serious but still not quite as brilliant as Holmes. Some make the character more bullheaded and easily angered, while others make him more supportive and friendly. Many of the best find some sort of balance between these disparate elements; while he may not get the kudos that Holmes and Watson get, Lestrade is an interesting character in his own right, with a lot of layers writers, actors, and directors can play with. Having said that, here are some I particularly enjoy. So STOP IN THE NAME OF THE LAW! Here are My Top 10 Favorite Portrayals of Inspector Lestrade.
10. Frank Finlay, from A Study in Terror & Murder By Decree.
Finlay played Lestrade, by sheer coincidence, in two completely different films that have the same premise: Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper. He looks, sounds, and generally behaves exactly the same in both movies, too. It’s rather uncanny, really.
9. Eddie Marsan, from the Guy Ritchie Films.
In the first film, Lestrade is a major character, and the way they play with his relationship with Sherlock is surprising; it’s just a shame he’s little more than a cameo in the second film.
8. Jeffrey Jones, from Without a Clue.
Arguably the most bumbling version of the character on this list. However, since this movie is an outright comedy, I don’t mind this. (Please keep a certain elephant out of the room; I am only addressing portrayals of the character, not the people who played them.)
7. Peter Madden, from the 60s BBC Series.
In some ways, I think this might be the most book-accurate take on Lestrade, especially in terms of physical appearance. Madden only played the character in the first season of the series; in the second season, actor William Lucas took over. Weirdly enough, Madden did appear in the second season playing a completely different character in one episode. Not really sure why he was recast.
6. Dennis Hoey, from the Universal Films.
Alongside Jones, the most bungling version of Lestrade, frequently used as comic relief. In most of the films - not all, but most - he makes Nigel Bruce’s infamously doofy Watson look like a genius in comparison. He’s a lot of fun, though, and the chemistry between the three performers is great every time.
5. Rupert Graves, from Sherlock.
Arguably the most serious version of Lestrade on the list. I love the sort of normalcy he brings to the crazy world of Holmes and Watson, and the way he’s able to just put up with all the nonsense Sherlock shoves onto him, as well as find ways to rein Holmes in.
4. Archie Duncan, from the 50s TV Series.
This Lestrade is able to be extremely funny without actually being a moron; while he always needs Holmes to help him out, it’s mostly just because he’s impulsive and hotheaded, and therefore doesn’t always think things through or notice the details Sherlock notices. (Just like in the books.) Duncan, like Peter Madden, would weirdly play other characters in the show BESIDES Lestrade, including a villain in one story. Very talented performer who was always good to see in action!
3. The Version from Moriarty the Patriot.
This is probably the most friendly and encouraging version of Lestrade on the list, though he still gets righteously annoyed with both Holmes AND Moriarty in the series. I love his energy and the integrity the character has in the show; like Holmes, he’s willing to bend the rules to see justice done, and will never give up no matter what, which explains why they like each other above all else.
2. Akiko Morison, from Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century.
This version is a female descendant of the original inspector, named Beth Lestrade. She actually was more of a standout to me in this show than Watson was! Once again, this version isn’t depicted is an idiot - she’s fiery, strong, and very good at her job, with great instincts. Her problem is that, once again, she doesn’t always pick up on the details or fully understand the situation, which leads to conflict and her need to have Holmes around.
1. Colin Jeavons, from the Granada Series.
The definitive take on Lestrade, just as Jeremy Brett was the definitive take on Holmes, in my opinion. Jeavons plays Lestrade as a slightly pompous and rather sarcastic police officer, but he also seems to be one of the versions of the character who has the best sort of relationship with Sherlock. I love the chemistry between the pair, and how they each seem to sort of admire each other, though neither will ever admit it. At the same time, that competitive rivalry between the two has rarely been showcased better. Altogether marvelous.

despite the ending of reset making me want to scream & cry like a deranged weevil even now, ten years since i first watched it, i will forever love how my queen martha jones was welcomed into torchwood immediately. jack, gwen, owen, tosh & ianto never for a second made her feel unwelcome there, she was like the guest of honour, her skills were valued, she fit in so well & so quickly. even dr. owen harper (when he was alive he's allowed to be a bit salty after literally dying) never spoke down to her, never acted like he was superior to her or that she was second best as a fellow doctor, there was never any uncomfortable animosity between martha, gwen & tosh, jack in his role of team leader propped her up, was excited to introduce her to his team, never made her feel stupid & had the risen mitten 2.0 not worked, probably would’ve offered her owen's job before the man was even in morgue draw. the brilliant martha jones always deserved better & i wish she had joined torchwood as the sixth member 😩
#martha jones#martha 🤩 my queen my wife my love#can you tell that i love her so much#i would do anything for her#reset#torchwood#whoniverse#kat’s thoughts 🍄

hi dr fudge! Hope you're doing well! Sorry for the weird ask but do you have any favorite media that explore woc in unhealthy/twisted romantic relationships? I'm very fascinated with this but i rarely find a narrative that centres on women of color. Octavia Butler's books have been very helpful though because not only are they literary gems but the protagonists are always black women, so it's always fun to analyze the relationships from bipoc lens
i really need to get to octavia butler already
there's a real and frustrating scarcity of twisted/dark romance that features women of color. 90% of published romance with woc are wholesome quirky romcoms with cartoon covers. i'm tired.
i tend to find interesting and twisted content with woc protagonists in literary fiction more than traditional romance; so for instance luster by raven leilani could fit into this category. also, catherine house by elisabeth thomas which features a woc protagonist who is in many ways involved in an unhealthy romance not just with a boy but with a house and an institution and she's allowed to be super messy about it. i haven't yet read you made a fool of death with your beauty by akwaeke emezi, but i really want to, because apparently the woc protagonist gets involved with her boyfriend's dad? sign me up.
there's also stuff like the vegetarian by han kang which kind of irked me but which allows the protag to be really fucked up in her relationships. or you have writers like carmen maria machado and silvia moreno-garcia, both literary fiction darlings whose romantic plots i enjoy a lot more than those found in traditional romance.
a real treasure trove is short story anthologies from women of color. i've noticed that the short story is the real medium for delicious fucked-up dynamics, but check out danielle evans, zz packer, bora chung
i do want to mention a classic that again, isn't really romance, but will fuck you up nonetheless and that is corregidora by gayl jones. because wow, what a novel, and what a voice. so many fascinating and unhealthy romantic, queer, and familial dynamics in that one. in general, books from the 70s and 80s tend to be much bolder. i was really disappointed by the recent the other black girl which was trying to go for that 70s/80s avantgarde and just...fell so flat.
there's a lot of stuff out there to explore, but a lot of it may not be mainstream or as easily available as the media that focuses on white women. when you look, for instance, over lists of dark romance books....90% of them are about white women getting to experiment and be fucked up and messy. woc have to be respectable and "cute" on those clinical and sexless cartoon covers. ANYWAY. that's why many times i turn to our patron saint, fanfiction, which almost never lets me down.
addendum: i forgot about ONE OF MY FAVES: the idiot by elif batuman. goddd, the woc protagonist OWNS MY HEART FOREVER and she has such a terrible, fascinating time with a mysterious Russian guy in college.
#replies#book recs#recs#i can't get into film recs here because i have to think up a list....and i'd have problems with that too#but a lot of non-white cinema DOES allow women to be unhinged and messy

9, 13, 23, 24 for historical asks!
9. Favourite historical film?
I mean. You know the answer to this. Because Tombstone (1993) will be in my heart always and forever. I love cowboys
13. Something random about some random historical person in a random era.
Dr Harold Gilles, known for pioneering plastic surgery during and after wwi by coming up with new techniques and operations that he performed to help facially disfigured soldiers feel better about themselves and their wounds, also performed gender affirming surgeries
23. Favourite historical song / with such reference?
One time I was telling my friend about my favourite songs from the ‘10s and how they just don’t make music like they used to, she agreed. Anyway turns out we were talking about different ‘10s, but I personally was listening to my favourite historical bop of all time: Come Josephine In My Flying Machine by Billy Murray and Ada Jones, yes I listened to it on repeat too many times, yes I based an entire series of short historical queer romance stories on this song, no I don’t even know if I’m answering this question properly. next one let’s gooo
24. Most underrated historical figure?
He’s special TO ME as a trans man and as a nerd when it comes to tuberculosis and the Wild West, but Dr. Alan L Hart was a pioneer in x-Ray technology for TB screening and a trans man in the early 1900s :)
#i don’t talk about transness except for when it applies to my special interests#also me watching evil dead: hey y’all hot take about ash#anywho

I'll go with contemporary fandoms as if I go right back we'll be here forever! Dishonored - Emsider (Emily Kaldwin/ The Outsider). Vampyr - McReid (Dr Jonathan Reid/Geoffrey McCullum). 7- List your NoTPs from each fandom you’ve been in.
No shade to anyone who likes these, they are simply, very much not for me. Dishonored -Knifecrow (Corvo/Daud) Vampyr -Any of the others I'm afriad -Crossreid/Swanreid/Ashreid. Thief- Garrett/Erin. Deus Ex - Jensard (Adam Jensen/Francis Pritchard). Starfield - Sarah Morgan/Sam Coe. Destiny2 - Crow/Amanda Holliday.

2. whether or not they’ve ever made me cry (for Fred)
comfort character ask meme
OHHH MY GOD OK the main fred thing that's always guaranteed to make me cry is his angst in mystery incorporated, particularly his relationship with his parents. like, the writers were on a mission to make this boy suffer. i did not end either season of this show with dry eyes and it is mostly because of fred
fred just wants to believe in the good of the world so much - he's convinced that his traps will always work, that criminals will always get their comeuppance, and that he and his best friends will stay together as they are forever. unfortunately for him, he lives in a place that was basically founded on corruption and injustice, where the man he thought was his father for 16/17 years turned out to have used him for blackmail against his true parents, whom he then desperately believed would be better. and you can see how badly he wants to think that brad and judy are the answer to everything that's gone wrong in his life, but all they do is disappoint him until they outright betray him, and by that point you can tell fred has completely given up all hope and can't search for the good in the world anymore. by the very end of the show he seems so tired and empty, and i believe he straight up says that he just can't trust adults anymore.
the specific moment that always gets me is in the episode nightmare in red, where despite everything that he's suffered, fred chooses to forgive mayor jones, finally achieving some closure with a version of him uncorrupted by the treasure. the way mayor jones says "you were always the best part of me" and "i'm so proud of you" turn me into this meme because FRED HAS LACKED THAT KIND OF LOVE AND SUPPORT HIS ENTIRE LIFE UP UNTIL THAT MOMENT
also, despite fred having a safe haven with the gang to be himself and pursue his interests, there's still somewhat of a communication barrier there. they don't quite understand his infodumping (it's a love language!!), as well as many of his other ways of showing affection. he's clumsy and repressed and he struggles, equal parts because of his being autistic but also because he was raised in a home where he couldn't really express his emotions. he seems to be confident, happy and in control, but he admits to spending a lot of time alone, talking to the moose head on the wall and his plush bear. it's enough to make you cry in itself, but i also relate so much to his communication struggles in this way.
this is already an absolute essay, but tl;dr - they did not have to go THAT INSANE with fred's angst in this show, but my god it hits and it hits hard. man scooby doo am i right
#i've only just started bcsd season 2 but i am READY for the professor huh arc to similarly destroy me#also it's been a while since i last watched sdmi so please forgive me if some facts or details of my analysis are a little off#thank you for reading all of this if you did :) i've been wanting to write about sdmi fred for a while now so i'm glad to get the chance#also this is making me want to write an autistic fred character study SO bad#scooby doo#fred jones#nem askbox :D

Jessica Jones/Kilgrave fic 1/2
Summary:
Jessica makes an important discovery that leads her to make a decision that could drastically change things, perhaps for the better? Setting: Somewhere in 2x10 'AKA Pork chop', but knowing 2x11 'AKA Three lives and counting' is enough to understand what's going on.
From chapter I:
* "Albert, but ... what happens?" Louise cackled, frightened, clutching her husband by the arm. "I ... I don't know ..." the man muttered, standing in front of her, with a protective attitude, before turning to that intruder. "Who are you? How did you get in here? Go away, now! " he hissed, his tone cold. "Oh come on, you all saw how I got in here and it surely wasn't using the door!" Jessica shrugged. "I come from the future and you must believe me, because it is as true as I can do this!" And as she said it, she grabbed a steel stool that was nearby, squeezing it in her hands as if it was a ball of paper. “Albert! I'm afraid!" moaned the woman of science. "I’m not." said the kid, who rarely spoke during the experiments. “Good, Kevin, you don't have to be afraid of me. I'm here to save you. " Jessica smiled at him, [...]. *
Disclaimer: I do not write for profit and I do not own anything or any of the characters, even the ideas this time started from a brilliant prompt of Ecate EFP (together with other prompts of the Challenge 'Blossom By Blossom', which however I will mention at the end of the story, because it would spoil too much
Setting: Somewhere in episode 2x10 'AKA Pork chop', so it would help more to know the second season, but if at least you know the wonderful 2x11 'AKA Three lives and counting' you can understand what is going on
Not betaed: please forgive my not so perfect English, I always try so hard ^^'
This story partecipates to this challenge: #BLOSSOM BY BLOSSOM - THE SPRING BEGINS! @Non solo Sherlock - gruppo eventi multifandom FB
Chapter I: Subway train to take or lose
Jessica had finally reached an agreement. Her mother's confessions in exchange for Dr. Malus' freedom This would have allowed the woman not to be transferred to the RAFT. No more isolation. No more alienating life. Jessica could have continued to see her mother during prison visits. She would have maintained a bond, no matter how feeble it was, a bond, nonetheless. She wasn't going to lose her.
Jessica no longer intended to lose other people. The last one had hurt her too much. Of course, when he was alive he had turned the girl's life into real hell, but now that he was dead ... maybe it was even worse. At least the first time, when she believed that the impact with that bus had killed him, she continued to perceive his presence, to be distressed, she saw him, heard him speak to her, sometimes even felt his physical touch; as if it wasn't over yet, as if she knew deep down that there were still some unresolved issues. On the other hand, Jessica hadn't suffered from those ailments for months now: not a nightmare that made her wake up with palpitations and a cold sweat in the middle of the night, not even the slightest visual or auditory hallucination, not a semblance of purple around her . An issue resolved forever, with her own hands.
To the outside eye it might seem that Jessica was healed, that she was fine. Jessica was not feeling well at all, least of all since she had unwittingly created a reputation as a 'Vigilante' around her. She still remembered that woman who had hired her not so much to investigate her unfaithful companion but ... to kill him. Did people really think that about her? That night at the docks had drastically changed her life and Jessica was no longer so sure it had changed for the better.
Suddenly she thought of one of those silly cheesy films, Stirling had insisted on watching it with her, he had always been the most romantic of the two. Stirling, another clear example of how nice guys were never her match. She could not even explain why her memory had evoked such a distant story, albeit very important, perhaps for the content of that memory.
In that film it was highlighted how a simple different detail, such as taking the subway train in time or losing it and waiting for the next one, could make a difference.
Jessica had often wondered over the last few months about her 'subway train' to take or lose: and if during her 'reformatting of Killgrave' plan she had believed fully in him, had given him a chance, had helped him if not to to become a hero at least to stop being a threat to others? What if they never met? He wouldn't have been obsessed with her and avoided those death trails to get to her.
What if that night at the docks, she had just knocked him out, put a muzzle on him to keep him from talking, had him isolated in the RAFT? Had killing him really been the only solution? To say it with an adjective so dear to him, the most inevitable?
Jessica was almost glad she arrived at the Paradise Suite because those thoughts were haunting her.
A firm kick and the door swung open easily, making Karl Malus jump.
"Jessica, but how?" he asked bewildered, attempting a burst of speed to escape through the open door.
Seconds later the detective's hand was tightening firmly on his throat, keeping him suspended in midair.
“I don't think running away is a good idea. And to answer your question, my mother is a great talker, ”she replied, setting him back on the ground for him to breathe.
"Alisa? Where is she? Is she fine? I… I have to go to her… ” he replied, rubbing his neck. "She is where she always should have been, from the day you turned her into a fucking monster, like you did with me!" the detective growled, exasperated.
"You don’t understand!" the scientist yelled at her. Again lifted from the ground, this time to be slammed against the wall.
"Don't you dare tell me what the fuck I understand and what I don't!" she hissed. “I love Alisa and she loves me. We ... got married, right here. " he confessed to her.
This time it was the shock that made her loosen her grip, but she quickly regained her usual coolness.
"She was legally dead, I guess that wasn’t official," she replied, in an attempt to downplay it.
“It was, for us. Our feelings are real. " "Speaking of real, take off your glasses, fix yourself and stand against the wall so I can take pictures for the fake passport I'll give you to get you out of the country." "I'm not leaving Alisa." “You will do what I say, which is what she wants, too. If it was up to me, I'd break your bones, but she wants you safe. You will leave for South America and we will never hear of you again. " she explained, starting to take pictures of him. "It shouldn't have been like this," muttered the scientist. “Jessica, I should have kept you with us. We could have known each other better, I could have been a very good father to you. "
Jessica decided she had enough pics, which is why she didn't hesitate to punch him, immediately leaving a bruise under his left eye. "I had a father and you are not even worthy of saying that word!" She barked. "It would be enough for me to go back in time and do everything differently this time..." Dr. Malus reflected, only he did it aloud. "What are you babbling about?" “The IGH… Upgrading soldiers is not their only interest. Imagine facing the Second World War, if not the First, with today's technologies .. we would have won over the enemy in an instant! " "I will not stay a minute longer to listen to the ravings of a madman!" she looked at him disdainfully as she was about to leave. "Torchwood!" Dr. Malus suddenly said. "What is Torchwood?" she frowned. “A secret British organization, with technologies not typical of this planet. The IGH found a device in one of their lairs some time ago. They suspect that it allows time travels, but they are still studying it, they don't really know what the contraindications might be… ”he confessed, capturing the girl's full attention.
"Where is this device?" she urged him to speak, tugging at him.
“The old IIGH laboratory. It looks abandoned, but it's just a farce. There is a secret passage that leads to the real laboratory, the underground one, which is watched over. "
"Tell me exactly where it is and I'll take care of the rest." Jessica demanded.
It was almost ironic. She had done everything to escape the control of that unscrupulous persuader and now she found herself entangled in one of the worst mental traps that could exist, from which she felt she could not escape. Not if that trap was showing her exactly what she wanted.
A very risky plan was making its way into her mind. She felt she had to risk it all. Karl Malus decided to tell her everything.
"You'll see, Jessica, when you bring me that device, I'll find a way to understand how it works and you, Alisa and I will have the life we deserved." Dr Malus began to daydream.
"Shut up! It's because of your sick idea of a fucking happy family that I want that device. Indeed, there's something you can do for me before I bring your passport back. After all, for a scientist with your knowledge, I imagine it is a piece of cake to create something that contrasts a neurodegenerative disease in a child of seven to eight years, with a life expectancy of perhaps no more than two years. " Now it was Dr. Malus who looked at her without understanding. "So, is there anything you can do?" she insisted, getting impatient. "Uh well, I could ... I could create a vaccine that increases the immune defenses, without affecting the nervous system ... something to inject into the bone marrow of the spine ..." the scientist began his reasoning. “Well, let me find it for when I bring you your passport. Then I'll move on to the next stage. " -------------------------------------------
Dr. Karl Malus did not disappoint her expectations and two days later, even if Oscar had not yet completed the passport, she had returned to him, finding what was requested. She kept that precious vial with the vaccine in a small airtight case, while she moved with ease in the secret laboratory of the IGH, knocking anyone who walked in front of her with ease. Not because they weren't worthy opponents, but because Jessica was too determined. By now she had arrived at the room of her interest, lifting the heavy dome that protected the precious device: a bracelet with a very futuristic look.
A new horde of soldiers rushed at her. They were surrounding her and they were all armed, ready to fire. "Jessica Jones, get out of there now or we'll open fire!" one of them said, perhaps the boss.
The identity of the super heroine was certainly no mystery to them. Heedless of their threats, she tore the device out of its holder by wearing it on her right wrist. Now it was the soldiers who felt threatened and not one of them had dared to shoot. The risk of hitting the device was too high and the consequences too unknown. "Interesting toy, do we want to see how it works?" Jessica said, perfectly at ease. “Don't touch it! W-we - we have been studying it for m-months, we must first understand the components, which technologies it responds to, if there are any contraindications… ” said one of the scientists who was there, panicked.
"There is only one way to find out: try!" she sneered contemptuously, opening the front panel. She closed her eyes, visualized a precise date in her mind, a date she still had in her memory, when Killgrave had shown her that video in her old home.
October 31, 1985. If she recalled correctly, the last fateful injection that had infected him with that virus took place in the early afternoon, she focused in her mind to be there for lunchtime. She closed the faceplate with a lightning snap, wished with all her heart that it would work ... and it did. The IGH saw her vanish in a flash.
Jessica floated in an abstract and hazy space, beautiful and terrifying at the same time. Was she really time traveling?
She was unable to establish whether it had lasted a few seconds, a few minutes or a few hours, she only realized that the journey was over, when with a glow as intense as it was instantaneous she appeared in that laboratory she had seen in the video stored in that flash drive.
And that child with the cables connected to the neurons, stared at her in silence from the glass, with his mouth open, so surprised that he dropped to the ground part of the constructions he was composing. "Albert, but ... what happens?" Louise cackled, frightened, clutching her husband by the arm.
"I come from the future and you must believe me, because it is as true as I can do this!"
And as she said it, she grabbed a steel stool that was nearby, squeezing it in her hands as if it was a ball of paper. “Albert! I'm afraid!" moaned the woman of science. "I’m not." said the kid, who rarely spoke during the experiments.
“Good, Kevin, you don't have to be afraid of me. I'm here to save you. " Jessica smiled at him, speaking to him with a sweetness that she had never had towards him.
"You know my name?" He asked, even more amazed. "I know everything about you," she nodded, then turned back to his parents. "About all of you. I know what you want to do. The intent is noble, but the method is wrong. You have no idea of the trouble you are about to cause, but I am here to prevent it. " She explained to them, opening the briefcase.
"Do you want to kill us?" Louise asked, alarmed, sure she was about to draw a gun, but was dumbfounded when she realized it was a vial.
"But what ..." "If you want to heal Kevin, you have to give him this, through the bone marrow." She informed them, handing Albert the cure.
"But ... it will be a very painful injection ..." the man of science muttered, perplexed.
"Because cerebral spinal fluid extractions are a health walk, right?" the detective shrewdly countered.
"But y-you ... ho-how do you know?" Louise stammered. “I told you, didn't I? I am from the future. I know everything. And I know what will happen if you don't do as I told you. " Jessica insisted.
"Mom, Dad ... am I sick?" Kevin asked in a small voice.
Moreover, no one had ever explained anything to him, he did not understand the reason for those experiments. He just obeyed because that was what good children did. Jessica walked over to the glass, placing her hand on it.
“Yes, little Kevin, you have a bad, ugly disease, but I am here to help you. I know that you are a strong and courageous child and you will fight right? "
Kevin tore the cables out of his head, to get up and run towards the glass, resting his hand where she had put it.
"Yes, girl from the future, I will fight the bad and ugly disease!" He promised her, determined.
Jessica smiled at him again, before turning to his parents with a nod of assent.
Albert got the special syringe, poured out the vial and walked into Kevin's room, who was looking at the needle in terror, then turned his gaze to Jessica.
“Kevin, I'm not going to lie to you. This thing will hurt you, very bad, but it will only do you a lot of good afterwards. Do you trust me?"
The child nodded weakly with his head, while his father made him bend over the table and his mother also joined to hold him still. "Come on, my son, everything will be fine." She whispered, before Albert applied pressure and the needle entered.
It was slow, heartbreaking, and Kevin screamed the whole time before he passed out.
Jessica entered the room too.
"It's normal. He could remain unconscious for hours, the scientist who designed this vaccine informed me of this possibility. You have to believe me, you did the right thing. " She congratulated as Louise picked up her little son. “Take him to his room, he needs a lot of rest. I will stay with you as long as necessary to ascertain the results." she stated.
Jessica kept her word. It took Kevin all day to recover and just as Louise was one step away from accusing Jessica of putting her son into a coma, he opened his eyes again.
"Kevin, sweetheart!" His mother rejoiced, just as the father also seemed more serene.
"Girl from the future, you stayed!" He greeted her, with an expression of joy, proving that his brain functions had not been affected.
"Yes, little Kevin, I will stay until you are fully recovered." She stroked his hand and he wasted no time and squeezed it, while with the other he held his throat.
"I'm thirsty." He said, coughing a little.
"I know, my son, it's a consequence of the injection you had, but I can't get you to drink fluids until tomorrow morning." His father explained. “But I want some water. Right away!" he whimpered. "Bring me some water!"
“Kevin, really, you can't, it's for your own good. If you scream it's only worse, because you are more thirsty. " Jessica reassured him, speaking to him quietly. "In the morning you can drink all the water you want, a matter of a few hours that will pass sooner than you think."
"She’s right, Kevin." Albert approved. “As a good guy, try to sleep so you won't think about thirst. You still need a lot of rest. " He advised him and the boy yawned, feeling his eyelids get heavier, until he fell asleep within minutes.
Jessica followed Louise and Albert out of the room.
"Wonderful." commented the detective.
"Excuse me? My son is dying of thirst and you find it wonderful? " Louise snapped.
"You don't understand, it's wonderful that he commanded something and you didn't please him."
"Yeah, sure, as if a seven-year-old boy could command me!" Albert grumbled. “Why were you so worried about it? Do you want to tell us once and for all who you are and why you helped us? " "You are right. I owe you some explanations. I'll tell you everything, as long as it remains a secret between you and me. Little Kevin will never have to know. " she made a decision and only went on when she saw Albert and Louise nodding. "My name is Jessica and this is my story." (End I)

Auburn, AL - Activities to Enjoy
I love Auburn because of many reasons. Auburn has a variety of activities for visitors of all ages. In fact, these outdoor places include six golf courses such as the Robert Trent Jones Grand National golf course. Besides this, visitors can enjoy the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art. Plus, they can have fun at the dance, theater, and music programs. They can also visit the local restaurants, the Donald-E Davis Arboretum, and over 16 local parks. Some of these parks are my favorite, like the Chewacla State Park, which offers 696-acre hiking and 30 miles of biking trails. Auburn is growing and changing, but the warmth and small-town feel that make Auburn special will always be appreciated.
Jordan-Hare Stadium
The Jordan-Hare Stadium is the nation's 11th-largest stadium that's on-campus. As for the record, this stadium has a capacity of 88,043. This is a very historical place because a lot of activities have been played here. This stadium served as the home of the Auburn Tigers ever since 1939. When it comes to football, Jordan-Hare Stadium becomes Alabama's fifth-largest city. In fact, there are over 75,000 season tickets sold to Auburn. The legendary coach Pat Dye has also had his name forever attached to Jordan-Hare Stadium. Dye, served as the head coach and athletics director at Auburn way back 1981 to 1992 and inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame just around 19 years ago. In December 2005, Auburn led a 99-39-4 record and four SEC Championships during his 12 seasons on the Plains.
Faculty Members from Auburn Included in the Honor
It's really inspiring that two Harbert College of Business faculty members have been awarded the 2024 Auburn University President's Awards for their leadership roles in two significant campus programs. The first award was for Distinguished Faculty Leadership, with Kerry Inger, a Harbert advisory council professor with the School of Accountancy, and N. Hari Narayanan, the chair of the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering/Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, receiving the joint award. Also, the Executive Master of Real Estate Development (MRED) program was recognized for the Outstanding Collaborative Units Award. Inger served in a leadership role for a team that developed the Auburn University Strategic Plan 2035: Grounded & Groundbreaking, a 10-year strategic roadmap that will lead Auburn over the next decade.

Note
I've seen many movies and games where the AI just wants to die cuz they miss their old friends and family. But they've become too powerful that they can't even commit suicide if they wanted to.
It’s funny...I was at peace with the fact that I might just be destined to die...And now I find that I’m practically immortal.
Ain’t that a good thing though? You don’t have to be properly afraid of death.
Maybe you would get lonely if we all died before you, but I’m sure you’d make new friends. You’re really good at it.
Thanks Akane, but...losing you isn’t the only issue.
The fantasy of living forever is just a fig leaf for the fear of death...And comes at great personal cost.
What do you mean?
People always play up immortality and the ability to defy the fate of death as a powerful thing...and therein lies the problem.
Have you ever watched Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade? If you haven’t, do you mind if I spoil the ending?
At the end of the movie, the main villain, Walter Donovan, uses Indiana to get his hands on the Holy Grail; a sacred goblet that will grant him eternal life if he drinks it. But when he finally gets there, he has to figure out which of the many cups laid out in front of him is the real grail.
He makes a mistake, and assumes that the shiniest goblet is the grail he’s looking for. Instead of gaining immortality, he rapidly starts to age, until he’s grinded into dust.
Moments later, Dr Elsa Schneider ignores the warning not to try to remove the Grail from the temple, causing the place to collapse and the ground to split apart. Grasping for the prize of immortality, she attempts to reach the Grail before it falls into the bowels of the earth. She’s so desperate to live forever, she slips from Indi’s grip and plummets to her death.
Yeah...I don’t really get where you’re going with this.
What Chiaki is bringing attention to is the hypocrisy of those who are desperate for immortality. In her example, due to their unquenchable desire for eternal life, they instead met with gruesome deaths.
Also, there’s something else she left out about that movie example. The Holy Grail is guarded by an immortal knight, and he tells the characters that the cost of living forever is having to stay in that very same temple, forever.
My situation is similar to the knight’s. He’ll live for all eternity, but he won’t leave that temple...And I may be able to live forever...but I’m not getting out of this screen. I wouldn’t be able to live a normal life, unlike humans like you.
I can’t live a life. I can’t get a job. I can’t fall in love, get married and start a family...
And living forever...means no living happily ever after...
Chiaki...
I still don’t really get it but...basically you’re saying being an AI is hell, right?
...
Sorry...I got a bit emotional there.
You guys have always treated me like I’m the same as the rest of you. And I’m grateful for that.
But...That gratitude doesn’t mean I can just turn my eyes away from the facts...I’m just a computer...I’ll never be real...

“Take me to the morning. I don’t need the sun, or the dawn; you are light enough.” —David Jones
When Spencer Reid met Y/N Y/L/N it was like everything had fallen into place. He knew, he wanted to be with this woman forever. Even his mother had told him, “Spencer, If you feel like she’d the one then don’t waste a second. Time is precious.”
That’s why, on a beautiful evening in October, with the help of his team, he’d put together a stunning little setting, where he got down on one knee and asked for her forever. Of course she’d said yes, and they quickly got to wedding planning. they picked a date, June 27th, and excitedly awaited the big day.
The wedding had been small, and private. Much to Garcia’s upset, who wanted to make it the perfect big white wedding, but that’s wasn’t who Spencer or Y/N were. They were content with a small venue, with just a simple colour scheme, and a pretty white wedding cake. Y/N’s dress was simple yet stunning, complementing her figure perfectly. The ceremony was beautiful, hosted (as insisted) by Rossi in his enormous garden. Those invited consisted of Y/N’s parents and Spencer’s mother, who was having one of her good days, though she’d leave before the reception so she wouldn’t get too overwhelmed. It was also other close family and friends, of course including the BAU team, who Spencer and you considered family too.
The reception party was in full swing, and the loud music died down a little as the lead singer from the band Garcia, as Y/N’s maid of honour and ‘chief wedding planner’(a title she’d given herself), had organised spoke. “Alright ladies and gentlemen, we’re gonna slow it down a bit so we can welcome for the first time ever, Dr and Mrs. Reid!”
Their famillies and friends cheered, as they walked together through the doors out into the garden, holding one another’s hand as they moved toward the dance floor for their first dance. They both had the biggest smiles on their lips, unable to stop smiling as their friends and family members congratulated them again as they passed by. When they reached the centre of the dance floor, Spencer pulled his wife to his chest, one hand on her waist and the other holding her hand. Neither were particularly good at dancing, but they’d practiced for this, and it wasn’t really dancing as much as it was swaying together, but It didn’t matter. The music kicked in, and smiles found their faces at the choice of song.
“I was a quick wet boy Diving too deep for coins...”
—
It’d been a cold wet day, and the rain hammered down outside the warmth of the couples apartment. The pair had only recently moved in together, choosing to move into Spencer’s apartment as it was slightly bigger than hers, and they couldn’t be happier. She had the day off from work, and Spencer hadn’t received a case and was told he could do his paperwork from home and so they spent the day inside. They were grateful for this time off to enjoy one another’s company, something that seemed so rare for them.
Her phone played soft music that Spencer didn’t recognise as she hummed along, staring out the window as she watched the rain fall. It was peaceful, blissful. It was something Spencer appreciated. His life was so hectic, peace like this was few and far between.
He was sat on the couch reading a book, but had been distracted by his girlfriend, watching her as she hummed and sipped happily on her coffee. The song finished, and the first few notes of a new one began, and she gasped softly, placing her coffee cup down on the table nearby.
“I was a quick wet boy Diving too deep for coins All of your straight blind eyes Wide on my plastic toys”
“This song is so beautiful.” She whispered, and then turned and walked toward him, gently taking the book from his hands and placing it down beside him, before offering him her hand.
“Dance with me, Spence?”
“You know I was reading that, now I don’t know what page I’m on.” He teased and she rolled her eyes with a giggle.
“You have an eidetic memory, I’m sure you’ll be okay.” She pouted and gave him those doe eyes that she knew he’d never been able to resist. “Please, Spence? Dance with me?”
He took her hand, and let her pull him to stand. “I don’t know how to dance, Y/N.” He pouted and she giggled a little.
“Me either, let’s figure it out together.”
He nodded at that, and followed her over to the window, closer to the music coming from her phone. Spencer didn’t recognise the song, but he liked how it sounded. He pulled her into his chest, placing his hands on her hips, unsure, but encouraged when she placed an arm around his neck, her other hand resting on his shoulder as they started to sway gently.
“Have I found you?
Flightless bird, jealous, weeping
Or lost you?
American mouth
Big bill looming”
“The song is beautiful,” Spencer started. “but not half as beautiful as you.” He whispered and she blushed, looking down at their feet as an bashful smile spread on her lips.
“Thank you.” She murmured. “I’ve loved this song since I was younger. I always dreamed of dancing to it during my first dance with my future husband.” She smiled, and his heart exploded. Did she think of marrying him? He thought of marrying her, a lot more since she’d moved in with him. Waking up and falling asleep to her gave him a feeling like nothing he’d ever felt before. He wanted to feel that way forever.
That was the day he decided Y/N was going to be the woman he would marry. Promising himself that they’d dance to that very song at their wedding.
___
She looked up at him, tears brimming in her eyes. “You remembered.”
“Of course I did. Eidetic memory, remember?” He joked, and she giggled. They continued to sway, and Spencer leaned down slightly to whisper in her ear.
“The song is beautiful,” Spencer started, reciting the same words he’d said the first day he’d heard the song. “but not half as beautiful as you.”
She smiled at the memory, and lifted her head from his chest. “I love you, Dr Reid.”
“I love you too, Mrs Reid.” He said it as a promise. A promise to her that this was forever. Then he leaned down and pressed a kiss to her lips, one filled with love and happiness and their promise of forever.
The sound of the crowd cheering at the kiss broke them apart as they laughed, the song coming to a close as everyone applauded the happy couple.
Have I found you? Flightless bird, brown hair bleeding Or lost you? American mouth Big bill, stuck going down

The letter’s route, please!!!
Right. So. This is in reference to the letter Mary Margaret sends Emma at the end of The Outlaw Killian Jones (and the legend Emma Swan). This letter follows a very roundabout path to get from A to B, and Krystal wanted to know if that was to conceal Emma's whereabouts or if it was just how the mail travelled. The answer is yes and yes.
Everyone buckle in.
Here's the passage that describes the letter's route:
This letter travelled by mail coach from the Haven general store—where Miss Blanchard posted it to the care of a P.O. Box in San Francisco—to the main post office in Casper. From there it went via train to Cheyenne, where it was loaded onto the mail car of the Union Pacific Railway and thence made its journey to the west coast. In San Francisco its fortunes underwent a curious change, for it was redirected by a clerk there, in accordance with instructions, and placed back on the Union Pacific, headed this time for Denver. From Denver it voyaged onwards to Kansas City, then Chicago, and finally to New York, where it abandoned train travel forever in favour of a steam ship bound for Buenos Aires.
Upon arrival at port it was placed in the charge of a courier who carried it along with a scant handful of others over the rough roads of the Argentinian coast to Puerto Santa Cruz and then inland, where it finally, many months after its departure, came to rest at a tiny, dusty outpost in southern Patagonia.
This fic is set at the turn of the 20th century, when mail coaches, trains, and steam ships were the only options for transporting international post. The Transcontinental Railroad by then had been carrying mail for several decades and the branch railway lines helped distribute it to smaller towns, from where it would then go by coach or horseback to some sort of collection point where people would stop by when they could to pick it up. At that time door-to-door mail delivery didn't exist.
Which of course doesn't answer the question of why MM's letter first went to a San Francisco P.O. Box before doubling back and going to the east coast to catch its steam liner. For that we need to mine the backstory of Emma and Killian's relationship and how they managed to keep it a complete secret for three years. Fleshing this out in original novel form is going to be my NaNoWriMo project this year so I've given it a bit of thought.
Emma lives in a cabin next to an outcrop of rock. This rock seems solid but there is actually a gap in it, which leads to a canyon that's invisible from any road. On the night they meet, Killian is injured and he gets lost. He ends up in this canyon by chance and his horse finds the way out, leading him to Emma who takes him in and bandages him up.
You can pretty much guess where the story goes from there.
The canyon then becomes the way that Killian enters and exits Haven without anyone seeing him, and also where he keeps his horse when he's with Emma. It's the way they leave when they go to Argentina. They head west through the canyon to Idaho, Nevada, then to San Francisco where they set up the P.O. Box (and Emma writes to Mary Margaret to tell her of its existence) and get themselves new clothes and new identities. Armed with those, they get on a train--much like the letter does--and travel to NYC, then to Buenos Aires on a steam ship of their own.
I believe it was possible at the time to sail down the west coast of the USA and South America and around Cape Horn to reach Argentina. But that route has always been notoriously difficult and also uncomfortable, compared to the trains of the time and the steam ships that operated in the Atlantic. It makes sense that Emma and Killian would choose the latter, both for practical purposes and to evade the bounty hunters on Killian's tail.
So, TL;DR yes and yes. The letter took the route it did as part of the way Emma and Killian concealed their whereabouts and also because that was the way mail travelled in those days.
I deeply love and appreciate questions of this nature because I basically always have a backstory, even for one-shots, and will take any excuse to expound on them at great length. Thanks, K ❤️❤️❤️.
