Earlier this year, I had a bout of what my friends and I term “mental health”. I was always tired. I couldn’t concentrate. I felt burnt out by the volume of communication that social media facilitates. I am 31 and, like many people my age, I’m in multiple group chats on WhatsApp and often find myself added to new ones. I use Instagram to post work and selfies, and to chat with people via the DM function. I use X similarly. (I’m too old for TikTok.) I enjoy some of this. I like talking nonsense with my friends. But I’d started to question how deliberate much of it was. I’d find myself posting a picture of a book I was reading and think, why do I need an audience to read? I began to wonder if, in the cycle of curating, recording and publicising our lives on social media, the things we do that are not seen and affirmed by people online feel somehow less “real”. My work as a writer means I probably get more online communication than the average person. Last year I published my first novel, and I have since noticed the slightly strange way that novels are discussed online. I get tagged in Instagram posts saying that my book is about a messy girl, a sad girl, a distant girl or a cold girl. There is an algorithmic basis to this. The easiest way to attract attention on social media is to talk about a trend everyone else is talking about, or to slot whatever you’re talking about into one of these trends.

So everywhere you look it is Brat summers or trad wives, cottage-core or bloke-core, high-functioning anxiety, parentified children or whatever happens to be the latest term for pathologising your life experience. Everything is flattened, simplified. I worried that being immersed in it was making me think this way too. A friend recently got a “dumb” phone, a Nokia 3210, to use when she’s out of the house. She leaves her smartphone at home like a landline. It has made her happier, she says. I needed a break too, but I was drawn to the idea of spending some time cut off from all communication. A reset, of sorts. I found a weekend-long silent retreat, no phones allowed, and booked myself in. My craving for a break is not uncommon. Social media is such a constant background presence in our lives that it’s easy to forget how recent it is. Facebook, which feels impossibly passé, is only 20. Instagram is not yet 15. Researchers first used the term “digital detox”, to refer to a period of abstention from phones and laptops, in 2012, around the same time that social media was really taking off (chat rooms had been around since the turn of the 1990s without the concept surfacing).

Digital detoxes remained unusual for a time. In 2015, Essena O’Neill, an Australian influencer with 612,000 Instagram followers, made news around the world when she released a statement about quitting the platform. Today, similar moves by celebrities are so common they barely make headlines. Billie Eilish deleted all social media apps from her phone. Actress Tavi Gevinson wrote about using an assistant to manage her Instagram. It has been hard to keep track of the number of times Stephen Fry has quit and rejoined Twitter over the years. These dramatic exits can seem amusing, especially when they’re followed by sheepish returns, but mostly they underscore how addictive and overwhelming social media can be. My silent retreat took place in a large house in rural Devon. I arrived on Friday, one of a group of about 50. We were allowed to speak during registration and, because I had gone there determined not to use reductive labels, I could already sense myself reaching for them. A young man told me he had done several silent retreats before. Ah, I thought, so you’re the type of person who does these often. Then I caught myself. What type would that be?

During the first meditation session, our instructors explained that we would sit and try to embody, rather than think about, the question “What is this?” This distinction struck me as confusing to the point of meaninglessness. But they explained that one way of attempting “not to think” about the question was to resist the urge to answer it. They encouraged us to focus instead on how we felt, on the physical sensations in our bodies. If you have never tried this, I will say that it is extremely difficult. We sat cross-legged for 30 minutes. I stared at a wall. Then we walked in a circle for 10 minutes. Then we sat down again, and so on, for about two hours. Then it was bedtime. I enjoyed the communality of me and the other girls silently working through our evening routines together. I realised that I had never decided to bring my phone everywhere, like an appendage to my body

The next two days were structured around meditation and chores. At 6.30am we were woken by a bell. We did two hours of meditation, after which we had breakfast. Then a break, followed by another two hours of meditation and lunch. My chore was washing up after we ate. Then more meditation, dinner, another break, meditation, bed. If sitting in an uncomfortable position and staring at a wall while trying not to think sounds impossibly boring, I would say it is not so different from the way my days would unfold when I worked in offices, traipsing from my desk to the tea station and back. More earnestly, I would say I could not have imagined how much I would enjoy the retreat, or how much I’d get out of it. Over the weekend, one of the instructors spoke about trying to be more conscious of the labels we put on our experiences and interactions. It struck me that a similar fatigue with the overload of digital communication is probably what draws a lot of people to try a silent retreat. We were all the type of person who is fed up with “types of people”.

On my first morning after breakfast, I went outside. The countryside seemed fantastically vivid. The blackbirds looked as beautiful as anything I had seen before. I watched one, like a dash of ink, flickering against the mottled grey sky, then two sailing as a pair, in tune with each other. I watched a cloud of them, pulsing. It reminded me of a jellyfish. Back inside, from my seat in the meditation room, I could see a tree that the birds would visit. When I was frustrated with the way my thoughts rattled around my head, reviewing unsaid rebuttals to months-old arguments, I watched the birds and imagined the paths they were taking in the world. One of my issues with the task “embody but try not to think” is that the semantic distinction between thinking and feeling is hard to grasp. If you notice that you feel happy or sad, is that a thought? Or a feeling? I found animals a useful framework to try to understand the distinction, as they negotiate the world using senses. A bird might fly north because of an environmental cue, but it does not say to itself in words, “I want to fly north.” I came to understand the task not as emptying your head of thoughts, but rather resisting the tendency to narrate things to yourself in words. I noticed that this interior monologuing would lead me along familiar, superficial trains of thought, to recent memories associated with certain feelings, say, and soon enough back to mundane anxieties.

At night, I would sit outside and look at the stars. The clouds, invisible in the darkness, shifted to expose one patch of stars, then another, making it look like the sky itself was swelling and shrinking. Memories and ideas still came to me, but deeper, more interesting ones than before. It was as if I had cleared the way for them. I remembered that I used to look at the stars when I was a teenager. I used to read about how they’re born, how they sustain themselves, why we see only some of them, how they die. On Monday morning at breakfast, we were allowed to speak again. Some participants had found the weekend hard, they said. One person had cried repeatedly. Others said that eating in silence had made them feel as though everyone was being cold towards them. As they talked, I remembered old corporate jobs where I was always the office loser. People could sense the aura of failure emanating from me, so I would eat lunch by myself, in silence. I got used to it. I didn’t feel I was learning anything valuable at the time, but life can surprise you. Sticking out is not so bad, I realised. This is the message of most children’s books, but one it’s easy to lose sight of as an adult. Other people’s perceptions of you, real or imagined, don’t have to influence how you see yourself. Social media is designed to erase this perspective. Much of the anxiety it fosters comes from forcing you to see yourself, constantly, as relative to others.

Give your phone a vacay! That is the tagline for Nokia’s Barbie flip phone, a phone which cannot connect to the internet, unlike today’s modern smartphones (Browne, 2024). This begs the discussion, why would such a product need to be produced in 2024? The answer to that lies in the current social media epidemic and its effects on the youth.  A topic being discussed on social media right now, ironically, is social media addiction and its impact on mental health (Osman, 2024).

One of the myriads of trends that are gaining popularity online is a social media detox, or a ‘dopamine detox’. This includes deleting or putting limits on social media apps and focusing on other activities that help people reconnect with themselves, nature and promote overall good wellbeing (Cherry, 2023). People had gained insight into the harmful effects of their dependence on social media, high screen times as well as the impact of the content they were consuming (Gupta, 2023).  

From an occupational therapy viewpoint, social media and the instant gratification it provides can be harmful to not only one’s emotional state, but their occupational functioning as well. Overuse and excessive screen time can cause an occupational imbalance (Mthembu et al., 2013). This sedentary behavior can lead to mental issues such as low moods, isolation and increased anxiety (Jahrami, 2023), as well as decreased participation in occupations such as personal hygiene and grooming, home management and health management. It can also cause feelings of inadequacy after seeing the high standards social media has set for the youth, such as toxic and often unrealistic beauty standards. Increased social media use can also impair cognitive abilities such as time management skills, attention and concentration and memory. It can affect physical health as well, long hours spent scrolling without any physical activity can cause obesity, which further affects functioning (Jahrami, 2023).

From the perspective of someone who is active on social media, the trending digital detox is a positive thing. Since the pandemic, my screen time has been embarrassingly high, something I am not proud of, and at first, I couldn’t see how it had affected me. However, once learning was no longer online, I could see how my attention span had severely decreased, before 2020 I had no problems reading an entire book in one sitting, now however, I struggle to finish a chapter without giving in to the urge to pick up my phone to check my notifications. It has also affected my ability to concentrate in class, making learning much more difficult.

This trend also links up with national suicide prevention month which is currently ongoing! Being online can expose one to a plethora of negative media which can lead to a journey down a proverbial rabbit hole of harmful content which affects their mental health(Robinson & Smith, 2024). This might cause depression, anxiety and loneliness. Cyberbullying is also very common and can leave emotional scars that stick with you for life.

In conclusion, when one thinks about the very apparent smartphone addiction the youth are facing, how young the addiction starts, it is obvious that some type of digital detox is needed!

Here is my account about the first Poldark preview and screening at the British Film Institute in London, England, on 23th February 2015. I had arranged a "get together" with a few of my Aidan Turner Fan Page members, at the Benugo Bar & Kitchen located inside the Southbank building, before the screening. After everyone arrived, and we ordered and had a lovely meal, it was time pay up and move to the auditorium of the BFI for the Poldark preview + Q & A with Aidan, Eleanor Tomlinson, Debbie Horsfield and Ed Bazalgette. And being in the same building and all we had to do was walk down a corridor, around a bend and down another corridor, up a couple of steps and entered the auditorium. I found my seat, F31, on the left hand section, 5 rows from the front, settled down, took out my cameras, my small digital Canon and Nokia Lumia smartphone making sure both were still in working order.

Some of the people seated around me recognized me and said hello, don’t remember all your names but it was great to meeting everyone! But I do remember Kristy Lucas, who sat in the seat on the right hand side of me; coz as I was waiting for the screening to start she says “Is the Aidan over there?” I looked over in the direction to were her comment was aimed and I couldn’t really make out, in the dim light of the room, who she was talking about, coz all I could see was a small crowd of people over on the right hand aisle of the centre block. Then she said “Yes, it is Aidan!” and finally I could see she was right, as most of the crowd had moved away by this time and Aidan was in the process of sitting back down in the aisle seat some 8 rows from the front of the centre block. And I sat there staring at him, my mind racing, furiously thinking, should I or shouldn’t I?! I might not get a 2nd chance (I was wrong but I didn’t know that at the time!), have I got time?! If I don’t go right now I won’t, it’s now or never!! So I got up, with smartphone in hand and putting my Canon away I said to Kristy “I’m going over there!” and she replied “I’m coming too!”

So we quickly and but calmly walked down the aisle towards the stage and back up to where Aidan was sitting. When I came to Aidan, he was sitting with his back towards me talking to Eleanor Tomlinson who was sitting beside him. Again, I hesitated, mind racing, should I or shouldn’t I disturb him? I’d come this far, can’t turn back now, just go for it, see what happens! I lent forward and gently touched his arm just above the elbow, at the same time calmly saying “Aidan” he turned round the gave me this big smile and I was lost for words for a split second until he said “Hi” I think I must have replied “hiya” although I don’t rightly remember! He asked me for my name and I told him, which gave me enough time to gather my thoughts and asked him “Did you receive a scrapbook for Christmas?” And he replies “Yeah, were you the one who compiled it” and I smiled shyly and looked down and said “Yes” happy in the knowledge that he had received it and was even more pleased when he went on to say that “ it was lovely, thank you!” At this point he took hold of my hand right clasping it with both of his. I went on to tell him that I’m the admin for an Aidan Turner Fan Page and he remarks “yes, you’re doing a great job!” I thank him shyly, and I told him that I had travelled all the way from Finland just to see him and he looks astonished “Really!?!” he says “oh thank you so much!” and asks “how long does a trip like that take?” I paused and tried hard to recall how long it had taken this time round and slowly replied “about 5 hours!?” Then the sense of urgency came over me again, knowing it couldn’t be much longer until the start of the screening and I asked if could I have a photo taken with him and he goes “yeah, of course” while gently touching the back of my left hand with the fingers of his right hand as he stood up. And it felt like the most natural thing in the world when I put my arm around his waist, my hand ending up on his left hip and he slid the palm of his right hand across the small of my back and up to my right shoulder blade while looking into each others eyes and smiling the whole time.

I handed the smartphone, I’d been holding on my left hand all this time, to Kristy who had been behind us watching and listening to our exchange and showed her how to take a photo, which she kindly did. Afterwards, me and Aidan looked and smiled at each other one more time, I thanked Aidan and he thanked me too, letting go and standing back and I watched while Kristy got to have her photo taken with him and we all said our goodbyes after which Kristy and myself made our back to our seats just moments before the presenter came on stage and proceeded to kick off the night’s entertainments.

The preview of episode 1 itself, goes almost without saying, was absolutely fabulous. One whole hour of Aidan, Aidan and more Aidan, seriously could anyone possibly ask for more?! LOL The hour went so quickly and it was all over far too soon! And before the discussion and Q & A began, they showed new trailer showing scenes from the up and coming episodes. Both the screening as well as the trailer were followed by huge applause. The discussion and following Q & A were both interesting and a lot of fun. But again, the session was all too soon over. And once after they had all left the stage to huge applause, I thought that was it, all over and time to make our way back home. Little did I know what the rest of the night had in store for us.....

y’know i love memes as much as anyone else on this hellsite and the internet in general. but one meme i can’t stand now, as well as a joke used by older comedians about ~kids today!!!! am i right???~ that i can’t stand now, is the one that’s like “all 10 year olds want today is an iphone or an ipad or a macbook for their birthday or christmas! all i got for my 10th birthday/christmas as a kid was a tennis racquet and a tether ball that hit me in the face! kids are so spoilt today! you better get an i-job to i-pay for your spoilt mac-ass!”

because like.... do you not understand that in today’s increasingly over-connected world, ipads and macbooks or other tablets/laptops are pretty much required school equipment now, if your 10yo kid’s primary/elementary etc school has a ~bring your own device~ policy for kids in years 4-6??? like obviously yes, some schools will provide students with laptop/tablet trolleys and stuff.... or also the government might have a program to roll out laptops/tablets to schools (like australia did under rudd and gillard).... that some schools will literally put “parents must get a reliable tablet computer or laptop computer for their child to use for assignments”. when it comes to high school, i imagine that they’ll need their own laptop/tablet the whole way through their time there, if there is no longer any school provided or limited school provided laptops/desktop computers/tablets.

that’s besides the point that laptops etc are even more so required now than ever before, after everyone was forced to do homeschooling because of covid??? so. practically. a kid asking for a macbook/ipad or other tablets/laptops for their birthday or christmas, isn’t such a bad idea for a present??? even if yeah. apple is overrated and overpriced to the max. but suck it up and pay for your child’s future education??? even it means getting a cheaper laptop or tablet for your kid.

all i can say on the above point is that yes. the idea of ~bring your own device~ policies does set many families back- especially those in/from lower income areas/backgrounds or single parent families... considering that a decent tablet will set you back at least $500 and a decent mini laptop is around the same.... but bigger and better laptops are around $1000 on sale (windows) or idek like $1,200 on an apple education pricing deal. like yeah. it’s a demarcation thing and also setting some people up to fail. and again, this has been made increasingly obvious during covid due to different families acces to buying laptops/tablets or other internet connection means. i also understand that these big ticket item purchases of tablets/laptops hits the hip pockets of everyone harder during the pandemic, especially if you’re struggling with debt like mortgage repayments or whatever while being made redundant or are being paid less while working from home.

okay. not to sound like a spoilt brat of a kid, but i got my first laptop, an i-book G4 for my 10th birthday in 2005. then almost 10 years later, i got a macbook for my 18th birthday (and for my HSC/end of high school exams) in 2013. yes, this is the macbook that i promptly fucked up two years later in 2015, by trying to encrypt the hard drive, since i was taking it to uni and it had all my internet passwords remembered on it along with my banking details. the same goes for my other windows laptop... where the hard drive just decided to fry itself like 4 months into me using it, along with the trackpad. and that was a $1,200 ASUS laptop (bought on sale) that i was using for uni. and then finally my little HP stream laptop’s keyboard shorted out halfway through a creative writing class (that was $500 and it only has a 28gb hard drive so it’s very light and good for transport).

but my point is, me having my own laptop (as opposed to using the family computer only) helped me immensely in my studies..... and they were literally fucking essential to me both in business college and uni. but they were also helpful in late high school, considering that 90% of my assignment work was expected to be typed out in microsoft word or powerpoint or excel (for maths and science). or for more creative projects, i was expected to use adobe photoshop and video editing software like imovie or adobe premiere pro (art/computer tech/drama/that weird year 7 subject i did called INTEL) and garageband/sibelius (for music). how on earth was i supposed to keep doing work on adobe photoshop or word etc at home if i didn’t have my own laptop to continue the work???

because as a final point, for me, literally by year 10 in 2011, NOT ONE of my assignments was expected to be handwritten (bar my actual exams or in class tests; also state tests/exams etc; or if it was a poster or visual art). if you dared to turn in something handwritten, the teacher and student interaction would be like the following example:

teacher to a kid whose handed in a handwritten assignment: did you not read the assessment outline? it said WORD PROCESSED WITH WORD! what is this handwritten thing? okay fine. i’ll take it this time. but read the outline next time, timothy!

timothy: *stammers out* s-sorry miss/s-sorry sir *stalks away from the teacher’s desk in embarrassment and shame*

the teacher, probs thinking to themself: weird that a kid thinks they can hand in something handwritten. silly, really.

the above scenario was the same for me in years 11 & 12. also, by year 9/2010, we were using the education management system moodle (and maybe early stage presi for online presentations) for both of our HSIE subjects (history and geography) and i think a couple of other subjects, during most lessons and especially for class work that involved group work/class discussions, via online discussion boards function. my year group was actually was actually one of the test year groups for the early models of moodle. so by the time i was in uni, i was a native to using moodle; so i could skip the “moodle help tutorial” subject portions on it in every class.

hell, for today, i wouldn’t be surprised if foreign language subject faculties in high schools are now using school subscription class accounts or something for duolingo or babbel. and today, kids are learning coding from like year 4 onwards, i think, on apps at school as part of their science & tech studies lesson portion of the day. how on fucking earth are kids meant to keep up with their class work progression on coding apps or whatever, at home, if they don’t have their own laptop/tablet??? ridiculous. how would kids fare today without their own laptop/tablet, if all of their classwork for homeschooling is on like google drive/cloud or whatever other open source drive/open source cloud software their school uses?? or any other apps that their school might use??? obviously we are seeing this play out in real time during the pandemic, world over, where if a child is in a single parent family or if their two parents don’t have adequate enough resources/have been fired or let go from their jobs/juggling working from home and homeschooling; then it’s hurting these kids likelihood of doing well with distance learning.

but yeah. my point is that if your kid is asking you for a laptop or a tablet (regardless of brand) for their birthday or christmas, maybe buy them one?? because you never know. it may be the very thing at the top of their student resource list for the following school year. and also. do you know what stops kids fighting over their access to the family computer/tablet to do their assessments etc??? buying them their own personal laptops or tablets. even if they do cost an arm and a fucking leg. get your heads out of your asses and help your own goddamned kids (or relatives if it’s a nephew/niece etc asking for one) like you’re supposed to.

okay. for phones. i’ll admit i wouldn’t like a 10 year old having their own phone, because of social media being so easy to access on them. but if you don’t allow them to use the app store and don’t allow them to download instagram/facebook et al..... and give them the phone solely for safety reasons, i think that’s fine?

i’ve had a phone since i was 10 years old. also not to sound awfully clichè, but i turned out okay??? i had to have a phone back in year 4/2005 due to safety and also family issues. do you know what my teachers did with it? locked it away in their desk til the end of the day. obvs they had to remind me to take it home sometimes (bc i did leave it behind at school in the desk a few times lmao) but yeah. i was alright. if a kid wants a phone..... maybe make a compromise and get the classic nokia 3310 or something?? like i obvs agree that kids as young as 10 defs don’t need a smartphone like an iphone or a samsung galaxy. but a rock solid and basic nokia 3310 or whatever with no wifi access??? that’s good enough imo.

Designing Conditions for Experiences

I have been hooked on to Podcasts for a few years, when my friend, the founder of WittyPen, Anshul Motwani, introduced me to the medium. As I started listening to the podcast shows, while driving to my office, I got blown away by this medium. In due course, getting inspired by so many individuals, including Varun Duggirala, Guy Raz, David Brown, and so many more, I decided to host a podcast for my workplace, Avantika University.

We thought of starting a show on the theme of Designeering, the world where domains of Design and Engineering collide. While there are so many practitioners of Designeering, the term almost doesn't exist even on Google. Rohit Lalwani: How did you get introduced to the world of user interface and user experience?

Alok Nandi:  If I go back, it is in 94 when I got interested in web design.

At that time, we didn't use the word UX though User experience architect was coined, two, three years before by Don Norman when he was at Apple. But the usual term was web design and the end of the 90s we had user experience becoming a frequent word used by everyone. I would say that the challenge we have nowadays with that word user experience is that we have a narrow definition and it creates confusion.

Like for example, we have confusion between UX and UI, and that is something we need to dig into. One of the points I often make is that you cannot design experience. You can design conditions for the experience to happen because you cannot be in the head or the hand of a user. Still, you create a situation where the user or the consumer does something which fits into their objectives and comes into resonance with the purposes of the provider or the business. And so these are questions that students need to work on more critically, rather than just copy and paste some wireframe. Look at the landscape of websites and apps. They are so boring. Everything looks like the other.

That is a provocation I am bringing here to this podcast. If we go back into the history of web design and UX in the 90s, it was so full of energy because you could explore so many situations. What you see nowadays is that you take a framework, and then you copy and paste, you change some variables, and that's it.

So that would be my provocation to the listeners of this podcast.

Rohit Lalwani: User experience it has so many different ideologies which are out there, what's your user experience philosophy?

Alok Nandi: Mine is 'Be Agnostic'. We are all working on processes and activities, which are there to make happen, a product or service, a platform. We need to be very flexible in trying to use the optimal set of tools and methods which fits a vision and gets in resonance with some emotions and activities of our users and stakeholders, and that requires an elastic mind.

You need to be able to understand patterns and behaviours and try to say, what if? But I would also like to add the word, why should I? And that is something we will come back later in the conversation.

Rohit Lalwani: Is the user experience old wine in a new bottle?

Alok Nandi: In a way, yes and no. Yes. Because if we look at some of the practices, we see a kind of series of cycle every four or five, six years. You have different phases and fads of UX, and there I would say yes, it is. Like I was mentioning earlier in the mid-nineties, we were talking about web design. Then we began to talk about information architecture in the nineties early 2000 who today talks about information architecture.

Very few people go deep into the practice. A substantial part of the activity of UX is information architecture. And so that's why I see, yes, it's all wine, but at the same time we have a change of context and the change of context is brought by technological development and by behaviour. You get everyday people how they're using products.

Take an example of a smartphone. Go back five years ago, in 2007-08 when the iPhone was launched and then again in 1998-99 when Nokia was launched. You have different sets of behaviours which are impacting our job as designers because we need to understand how these devices and the software are used, consumed. You have to design or redesign some elements so that it is both meaningful and convenient.

The challenge of design is to make sure that you get in phase with convenience, and that is why you need some old, but you also need to refresh.

Sailfish OS: One Day

Today’s gonna be a weird and long post, so let’s start slow and give you the choice.

We’ve had, for years, seen the constant back and forth between Google and Apple on their respective phone operating systems. Android, which has dominated the market on basically any device you can pick up here in the states, and iOS, which exclusively powers iPhones, iPods and iPads. Despite the two duking it out, Android does hold the highest market share. As of Q2 2018, Statista claims a whopping 82% market share for Android, and no other competitors really exist.

But, for years, I’ve been enamored by an OS that has been seemingly out of my reach, and has had a lot of drawbacks that prevented me from ever considering using it for more than an hour. An OS that’s been going strong for over 5 years, and might soon see a new breath of fresh air due to recent allegations to Huawei. So, after the break, let me tell you my tale of Sailfish OS.

Now one thing I want to briefly mention is the history of this, but don’t take it as gospel. I’m not an expert on this stuff, but what I’ve gathered is Sailfish OS is built on a foundation of MeeGo and Mer. MeeGo has prospered on its own to Tizen, an alternative OS used widely by Samsung on their watches and fridges (for some reason), while Mer was a fork of MeeGo driven by the community, and became the framework for ex-Nokia employees to start a new project, with the funding of Nokia through their Bridge program. Those ex-Nokia employees would found Jolla, and Sailfish OS would be their creation.

I first heard of Sailfish in 2013, as I was dipping my toes into the world of smartphones at that point. It looked incredible, with vivid, vibrant colors, a gesture-driven UI, a uniform design language, and a promise of privacy and openness that we definitely don’t see from companies today. And at the time, I was especially curious of their hardware.

The Jolla phone saw its first pre-orders in April of 2013, and was officially available for purchase by November. It had decent specs for the time. Snapdragon 400, a modest 540x960 resolution (keep in mind, the flagship Samsung Galaxy SIII had a mere 720p resolution), 1GB of RAM, a 2100mAh battery, and most interesting to me, the “Other Half” which powered the system’s Ambiences. You slap a new Other Half on it, and the color changed to match in the OS. Cool in concept.

The later Jolla tablet would be promoted with an Indiegogo campaign, but unfortunately, costs and availability of materials, and the development of Sailfish OS 2.0 led to the tablet ultimately being cancelled, with a handful of units out in the wild.

Since then, Jolla’s gotten back on stable footing. The OS is open for licensing with OEMs, and Jolla’s been able to get official support from places like Russia, and companies like... Sony.

I have the Xperia XA2, released in March 2018 for $300 in the US. I snatched it up on eBay for a mere $170, and I’ve enjoyed its clean design, near-stock OS, and the solid in-house Sony apps like the Gallery and Music apps worked wonders. But then I discovered Jolla was working on Sailfish X for the XA2.

As a way to support the OS, and a way to fund the continued development of an Android compatibility layer for those who need Android apps, Jolla has Sailfish X, a version of their OS that features predictive text input with the keyboard, software updates and customer support, and of course, the Alien Dalvik, which lets you run Android apps on the OS natively. This was important, since I knew I needed apps like Discord, Twitter, Google Maps, and I could see the available open-sourced apps of things like Keepass weren’t gonna cut it.

The process was a bit difficult, and I stayed up until 4am on Saturday, trying to get the phone backed up, flashed, and ready to go with what I needed. First, I had to unlock the bootloader, which Sony and Jolla made it pretty easy. Then I had to buy the OS for the meager $35 USD (which I had done before even being certain my phone would do it, don’t make my mistake), download their software package and just... do it. After an hour, I had the phone running Sailfish, and man, it was a delight from the beginning. Swiping, tapping, sliding, the OS felt smooth, it had this flow about it.

After I got the accounts logged in, I proceeded to grab a few apps... before realizing all too soon that I’d need Google Play services. This is where I’m probably gonna get a lot of flack. For all the effort I put in, I was about to install apps that were at least partially at fault for the slowness of my XA2 on Android, and defeating the point of installing Sailfish.

Let me be forward in saying I don’t care that much about privacy. Do I like Google being involved in every facet of my life? Absolutely not, but they are sadly a necessary evil. And it’s not like you, the reader, would be any different. Tumblr, after all, is owned by Verizon, who has a history of screwing customers in plenty of situations, including firefighters who need constant access to emergency services for contact. And too many things want or need Google Play for me to avoid it. Discord, Telegram, Authy, Youtube, I use all this stuff, and without GP, it gets unhappy. I could remedy some of those by using Amazon or just going open-source with F-Droid, but it won’t fix the issue. And even now, microG, an open-source implementation of Google Play services, isn’t perfect, and would likely cause more headaches than I could handle at 4am on a Saturday.

Fortunately, some good Samaritans on Jolla’s Together forums created a simple Bash script I could run by just SSHing into my phone... Wow, that was a sentence. A fitting one though. After that, and after some headaches with the Google Setup wizard (here’s a tip: use Vision settings to get to your Android settings, and disable permissions on “Android Setup” when you’ve gotten your account logged in), I was finally using my phone, and it runs quite well. Android apps don’t consistently work correctly. Often, I have to close apps like the settings or Keepass because the framework stops updating the frontend, or even fully stop and start Android support, but it works well for just about everything I’m using on it now!

I really like the UI and design, and since the Other Half concept isn’t there for the XA2, ambiences are just a menu away from changing the look and feel of the OS in this pleasing way.

The system flows thanks to its gesture-driven controls. Swiping up from the bezel will bring you your app tray, swiping from the top bezel gives you quick settings. When you’re on the home screen, swiping left or right gives you a sort of agenda view where notifications, weather, and updates from your Twitter, Facebook, XMPP, VK and other accounts stack up. When you’re inside an app, swiping from the left or right bezel should bring you back home. Of all the interface controls on this device, that one is the most inconsistent one, a pain point given the nature of Android’s design language encourages these slide-out menus that you can’t consistently swipe open due to that gesture. The only setting I’ve found on that is to change the left-side bezel swipe to open the agenda instead of going home. I’d personally prefer hot zones on the bezels, so if I wanted to go home, swipe in from the lower half of the screen, but if I want the Android menus, slide from the top half.

Other interesting design cues come from the glowing parts of the UI, where extended menu options usually hide, or places you can slide out to are available.

Sliding down if the top is glowing usually opens this pulley menu, where each option can be selected by just pulling a bit and letting go. It’s an odd one, and due to the inconsistencies of apps and options, the pulley menu isn’t as instantly intuitive as I would hope. If there’s a glowing dot on a page though, you can simply slide to return to a menu from previously, or access another menu if the dot’s on the right side. Again, this is a bit inconsistent, as the unofficial Twitter app, Pingviini, showcases. You can actually just swipe left and right at will to access your notifications, conversations, search and trendings, and timeline. That bottom menu you’re seeing there is hidden so often, it’s basically pointless to have it there. This does make the whole system feel more cohesive, Pingviini looks like it belongs on this phone, but it does hurt usability.

Thus far, I’m still testing and learning about this OS. I had to google screenshotting, which is simply holding the volume rocker together. Doesn’t feel as reliable as the Android alternative of Volume Down and Power / Home, but I’ll take it. I don’t plan on gaming with this. Games are just not what I buy a phone for. It’s nice to have it there, but I’d prefer to just play my 3DS if I’m out and about.

I can’t wait to do more with Sailfish. It feels really nice to use, and I’m honestly draining my phone’s battery just from the amusement of swiping and sliding menus around and admiring the design of this. The last OS I really enjoyed using was Blackberry 10, and this feels like a sort of spiritual successor, with the included agenda feed and the persistent cards for apps you’re using.

Week 43- Fairytales in the modern world - SILKE

Back in The Netherlands I used tot travel by public transport at least 4 times a week. When on the train, tram, metro or bus every once in a while I'd spot a family, a mother or father (or together) with child. Sometimes these children were resting peacefully in the warm stroller, falling asleep to the rhythm of the moving train. But some of these children would be restless, crying, screaming and perhaps plainly being bored. Since the release of smartphones, iPads and all other smart devices, entertaining the restless child has never been easier. There are more than a thousand hits when searching for 'kids entertainment' on YouTube. Sensory adhesive videos, cartoons, music videos and even more genres than you can think of. With one press play these parents hand their child the device and let them be entertained by a tiny screen of plastic. They're occupied, distracted and quiet. What more does a parent want?

Excessive screen time can cause developmental delays around language, personal-social skills and gross-motor skills (Kelly, 2019). Then what about mobile applications? Experts say parents often justify, or tend to feel better about, giving a kid technology when he or she is actively interacting with whatever is on screen. There are games like 'the endless alphabet' or 'Smart Shapes' and many many more so called 'learning apps'. But some some of these “learning apps” don’t live up to their promise.

These apps are most of the times created to influence the child to influence the parent to buy something, if it's a project or subscription so their child can play their game without 'distractions'. Then there's in-game sales. 'If you pay $5,- you can unlock a new character!' Some parent's phones have their credit card connected, and if your kid then presses the wrong button then... well... Per example, earlier this year, Apple settled a class-action lawsuit brought by parents whose kids bought items like virtual food, gems and coins while playing iPhone or iPad games. One 5-year-old racked up $2,570 in these in-app purchases. (Glenn, 2013).

So... are we actually making, designing and producing these "learning" apps for the kids? or for their parent's to swipe their credit cards?

I have a certain personal view on mobile use when it comes to kids. I hate to see 6 year olds carrying a phone that's bigger than the back pocket of their little jeans, and asking for the newest iPad for christmas. I grew up with wooden toys and got my first Nokia at the fresh age of 10 that could only receive calls for when my parents wanted me to go home from playing outside. I think kids are too young and too 'fragile', and easily get in touch with the wrong side of the internet, since they're so smart and can easily navigate through the systems.

But. I know we all have to 'go with the flow', we have to accept that indeed, kids will eventually also want the newest smartphones. So if that's inevitable, how about I create something that is 100% designed in the good will of the kid, also known as 'non-profit'.

I got inspired, and we soon have to write a personal essay. I have decided that in this short period of time I will try and make a prototype of a mobile application for kids to be emerged into a fairytale, and for parents to find the 'morals' of the fairytales their child prefers. To stimulate and motivate parents that instead of showing their kids 'nonsense' videos to have their kids step into the world of their favourite fairytale, be entertained by the art of storytelling. I will support the prototype by explaining my reasoning as to 'how, what, why' and I will explain the essence, train of thought plus designs for the fairytales and their look and feel.

The Cybertronian race has existed for approx. a long-ass time, with HUGE life expectancy, so when we apply, say, Moore's Law of Exponential Technological Growth to their technology, that effect gets magnified, BIG TIME.

Think about the smartphones/tabs you saw on the market in 2011, few though they were. How much space did an affordable one have? For instance, the first 'smart-ish' brick of a phone I owned was in 2013, and it held a whopping EIGHT gigs of memory, and it wasn't expandable.

Now, hit fast-forward. It's 2021, babes! We can affordably buy 256+ gigs of memory on an SD card the size of a fingernail, and internal storage ALONE can be above 512 gigs on the higher end of phones! And that's just phones, think about all the other devices and storage systems we use now!! I've seen external drives, AFFORDABLE, that could absorb every file I've ever touched and it wouldn't be a drop in the ocean. Just ten years ago, a 4-gig usb stick cost me FIFTY DOLLARS and it was the most expensive school supply I'd ever needed. Man, time flies.

Okay. Point is. If you've ever hung on to an older device when you replaced it and stuck it in a drawer, or used it as an extra screen, storage, used it to run a Minecraft server, etc? That's what's going on here! Like yeah, my new Note 10+ could fit everything I had on my Note 4 and Note 8 combined, but do I need all of that on-hand? It would be more efficient to have only one physical copy (and a hard drive backup of the important stuff!!!), than to just keep taking everything I've ever loaded since the touchscreen age began with me! We already see this "stacks of screens" phenomena in the wild, especially with those of us who try to keep a back-up device in case our current one gets broken!!

Conversely, Moore's Law (TLDR: Storage and processing capacity per <size> doubles every two years, at roughly same cost-per-area as before!) also says quite a bit about file sizes and multi-tasking. Not only does more space mean you can make bigger files, but more processing capacity means you can use those files in more ways to do more things. Think about your OS, or games, or graphics quality!

Then again, there's also the issue of outmoded tech. Do you know where you could go today to have a floppy disk read? What if you need to access one for x reason? Some part of "the stack" is probably also there to fill the gap that occurs when tasks requiring a technology are outpaced by the tech itself!

Long story short, the reason they have stacks of datapads is the same reason we have stacks of "datapads," and the same reason your parents probably have a shelf of outmoded devices, and a junk drawer with a Blackberry and every Nokia phone your dad ran over ("look, it still works!!") when you were a kid. The speed at which the tech world moves means they all probably have their "Good Datapad" and several spare/backup ones!
