Yeehawgust Day 6: Wide Open Spaces
The Mandalorian
WC: 435
Rating: T
Characters: Din & Grogu
Warnings: angst, canon divergence (nothing major, just a re-imagining of a scene from season 1)
A/N: just a little father son drabble. I know this isn’t explicitly western, but the title inspired me to write about my favorite duo 🫶🏼

Din had seen the Galaxy a dozen times over before. Loading up into the Crest and hunting down a bounty in another system was old news to him. Not to say he took it for granted, he knew how many people stayed landlocked their whole lives. That probably would’ve been his fate had he not been taken in by the covert. But to him, it was business, not pleasure. The sight of the stars whizzing past was just something he was accustomed to seeing.
When he switched autopilot on and pushed back from the control panel, the sight of the child caught his eye. His little neck craning up to see out of the expansive front window. Din’s heart softened, and he leaned over the arm of his chair to pluck him from the ground and hold him up to the cold glass. The boy held out a small hand and pressed it flush against the windshield, letting out a small coo.
“I bet you’ve never seen the stars, huh, kid?” Din mused, “Not from this close at least.”
A solemn air fell over the pair as they sat wordlessly. Din didn’t know the child’s past. He didn’t know why he was being hunted. He didn’t know the horrors he had witnessed of his home burning to the ground and his friends and caretakers being slaughtered in front of him. He didn’t know that even now, the boy was thinking of them, willing himself to remember. He might not know their names, but he knew their faces. He would tell of their legacy of bravery for generations to come. The order of the Jedi would live on through him in spirit and in flesh.
Din didn’t know his past, but he was certain of his future.
“I don’t care how long it takes, I will reunite you with your kind. We will scour every planet in every system if we have to. I’ll comb through deserts and forests, plains and cities. I will not let you down.”
The child shifted in his hands, turning to face him straight on. Din wasn’t sure how much of his basic speak he could understand, but when he raised his small hands and clutched Din’s helmet between them gently, he was overcome with emotion. He felt something pulling them together, not physically, but on a deeper level. He wasn’t quite sure how to put it into words, but it’s like their hearts were being stitched together at the touch.
“This is the way,” he whispered, and the child nodded, as if he understood the weight of his promises.
