“You don’t have to hang out you know?” You mentioned, placing your small stack of books down on a folding chair so you could inspect the shelf in front of you, pulling out a title that caught your eye. 

JJ was standing beside you, pulling on the straps of his backpack and complaining that the wifi signal didn’t work in the basement of the library. He had shown up this morning, on his day off from work, asking if you wanted to hang out. 

You hadn’t shown up to the boat outing he’d invited you on last Saturday, figuring it was a nice but empty gesture. He had to talk about something while he walked you home right? It wasn’t like he actually wanted to spend time with you. But when you told him you couldn’t hang out, you were headed to the library’s biannual book sale, he invited himself along. Everyone must’ve been busy, you figured. 

“I’m fine.” He promised, pulling a book off the shelf and skimming through it, “see look, I’m browsing, maybe I’ll buy this.” 

“You’re going to buy,” you paused to read the title, “The Hobbit? Do you like sci-fi.” 

“Dunno,” he shrugged, “what’s that like nerdy stuff like Star Trek?” 

“Yeah, nerdy stuff like Star Trek, JJ. Really, you don’t have to stay.” 

“Well I am.” JJ countered, “How much are these anyway?”

“A dollar.”

JJ nodded, tucking the book under his arm and heading for the end of the aisle. You watched him for a moment, thinking maybe he was going to pay but then he turned the other direction, heading further into the room and disappearing into a new aisle. You stayed in your spot for a little while longer, adding three new books and finally putting the tote bag you’d brought in to good use, placing your ever growing collection in before going to find JJ among the shelves. 

You knew it was silly, because you were sure that he had only come along out of boredom or because there was nothing better to do, but you liked the idea of someone coming with you. Whenever your parents used to come along they would complain about your insistence to show them every book you got and read the back. You doubted JJ really wanted to endure an hour of hearing you talk about books but it didn’t matter, just the thought of being able to share this with someone was exciting and you couldn’t help being a thrilled with the idea. 

“Hey!” JJ’s voice caught your attention and you turned to see him sitting against an uncovered piece of wall, a small stack of books in front of him and one in his hand. “Did you know they have a book version of It.” 

“Yeah uh, Stephen King wrote It in like, the 80’s.” 

“It’s great.” He held up the thick book in his hand, “it’s way different from the movie but I really like it so far.” 

“I’m glad you found something you liked. What else did you get?” 

“Oh, okay. I found Jaws, Jurassic Park, that Hobbit book, and this one...I think our teacher mentioned it like...last year or something.” He held up the last book in his pile and you grinned. 

“Heart of Darkness, it’s a great book. Kinda Ready or Not-ish in the sense that they hunt people for sport.” You replied. “Do you want to look at more or we can go?” 

“We could grab food. I know Kie’s off but her dad might give us a break on lunch.” JJ mentioned, grabbing his books and following you to the stairwell where they had set up the checkout table. “What’d you get anyway?” He asked, pulling on the bag a little to try and peek inside. 

“I’ll show you at lunch, the unveiling is my favorite part.” You replied, positive the smile on your face was a little too exuberant. 

“You’re such a nerd.” JJ teased though there was a distinct level of fondness in his voice. 

“I just mean,” as the woman at the desk handed you back the bag of your books you clutched the handles, waiting for JJ to pay, “you can look at them whenever, it’s not a big deal. I just was thinking, you know, we can sit down and...but it’s fine-“

“Whatever you wanna do.” JJ replied, shrugging. He followed you up the basement steps to the main floor and out onto the sidewalk. The Wreck wasn’t too far away, just a short walk, but you were starting to feel antsy from trying so hard not to make yourself sound stupid and failing at it miserably. 

“I think, I’m gonna head home.” 

“Oh,” JJ frowned but you missed it, already turning toward the parking lot, “are you sure? Foods like, two minutes away.” 

“I’m kinda tired but I really appreciate you tagging along. As my dad says, I’m a hard person to like,” you said, smiling away the self-deprecating joke. 

“Guess I’ll see you around.” JJ pulled on his backpack straps, his books now safely inside as he watched you walk to your car and get in.

Despite JJ still continuing to work for your father as the summer came to an end, you did your best to avoid him. Not as far as army crawling through your room to avoid the window though you had given it a moment of consideration one afternoon. 

You wanted to ask him if he’d finished any of the books he bought and if he liked them. If he regretted going with you to the booksale or if he’d actually enjoyed himself. But you were too nervous, so you did the best thing you could think of and ignored him. Until you couldn’t anymore. 

You were coming home from the beach, having gone by yourself just to spend the morning reading before it got crowded with last minute tourists, when you walked into your room to find JJ there, standing at your desk, holding a picture of you with your grandma in Maine last spring. 

“What are you doing in my room?” You asked, startling him and causing him to drop the frame on the carpeted floor, thankfully not breaking it. 

“Sorry, sorry, your dad told me to use the upstairs bathroom-“  

“Which isn’t in my room.” You replied, dropping your beach tote on the floor and walking further into the room.  

“Yeah,” JJ laughed a little, “I just wanted to see if you were home.”

“I was at the beach.” 

He perked up at the sound of that, immediately trying to picture how cute you would look out on a surf board with him. “How’s the surf?” 

“I don’t surf,” You barely even went in the water, “JJ, why are you in my room?”

“I told you-“  

You cut him off, “Why are you still in my room?”

“I just wanted to talk to you. Listen I don’t know if maybe I wasn’t being clear or you aren’t interested, which is cool, ya know...but I really like you. I was kinda hoping we could get a second date, since you cut the first one short.” He explained, leaning against your desk.  

“What are you talking about...we haven’t been on a date.” You replied, crossing your arms and frowning. You definitely would’ve remembered someone asking you on a date, especially someone like JJ.  

“We went to the book sale.” He replied as if that was obvious.  

“Yeah cause you showed up at my door and wanted to hang out cause everyone else was busy.” You said, giving the explanation for the day that you had created in your head.  

“What are you talking about?” JJ asked, repeating your question from earlier, “John B and them were at the chateau.” 

“What?”

“Wha...wait, what is going on?” He said, running a hand through his hair out of mild frustration. He had come over because you were avoiding him and he was hoping to catch a chance to talk to you, maybe figure out what happened.  

“I thought you wanted to hang out cause you didn’t have anything else to do.” You said, as if it was the most obvious thing on the planet.  

“Are you kidding me right now? I wanted to hang out cause I like you. I wanted to take you to lunch, hence a date.” JJ replied.  

“Oh.” Stunned was an understatement as you stood there staring at him, a little dumbfounded. “Why do you like me?”

“Well don’t say it like that.”  

“Like what?” You asked.

“Like it’s so unbelievable.” He said, “look, I really like you. You’re really cool and I actually read all of It so, I think we should go out.”

“Seriously?”

“Yeah seriously.”  

“Okay, uh, right now though? Cause I’m kinda sandy still, honestly.” You replied.  

JJ smiled at you, “yeah, I’m technically supposed to be cutting the grass right now.” As if on cue you heard your dad call JJ downstairs, no doubt wondering about the lawn mower still sitting in the middle of the lawn. “Tonight though?” He asked, walking passed you.

“Okay.” You nodded, biting your lip as you watched him leave your room. The fact that JJ Maybank had just told you he liked you and wanted to take you on a date all because your dad forced you to go to a dumb party was crazy, a little unbelievable, but you couldn’t stop yourself from being excited about it.

911 Operators Describe the Most Disturbing Calls they’ve Ever Taken

1. “Daddy’s Eye Fell Out”

“Had a call for a brother who killed his other brother with a hammer (the pick part) while the victim’s little daughter was watching. The daughter called us from another room and told us her daddy’s eye fell out.

Perp was apprehended, daughter taken by relative. Had to smoke after that one, and I don’t even smoke.”

2. “I Need your Help”

“There was an old couple who lived on a run-down ranch house about 20 miles east of town. When the husband passed away, the woman would call 911 at least three times a week, asking for assistance with very mundane tasks not normally dealt to first responders. “I need help turning the thermostat up”, “I need help boiling water for my tea”, etc.

The woman developed dementia, and eventually, it progressed to the point where she believed she was calling 911 to ask her deceased husband for help. All of the dispatchers would recognize the address immediately, even though all she could say was “(husband’s name), I need help. Please come home and help me”

One day she called, and again was only able to repeat her husband’s (I’ll call him “John”) name. “John, I need help. Please come home and help me John.” By the time the first responders arrived on scene, they found the woman lying dead in her bed. The first unit on scene called dispatch to confirm that it was the woman herself who had called 911, as rigor Morris had already set in. We wrote it off as the fact that the heater in her house wasn’t working, and the ambient temperature in the room was about 50 degrees.

We continued to receive 911 calls from that woman, at that address for just over a year after she passed away. Even after her home was vandalized, and burned to the ground, the phone calls did not stop. “John, I need your help. John, please come home and help me.” We were obligated to send a response each and every time, but not once did we find anyone on or near the property.

Multiple calls to the phone company confirmed that the phone line had been disconnected, and the call was not coming from another address.”

3. Glass Breaking

“1979 NYC. Got a call from a crying child – a little boy – saying his mom and dad were fighting and his dad said he was going to throw the mom out of the window. I could hear a terrible fight going on in the background – woman screaming, things breaking, man yelling, etc. The poor kid didn’t know his address. We didn’t have the technology for call ID and would have to use reverse telephone books. A trace would take forever. Anyway while I’m trying to get the address I hear a horrific scream and glass breaking. A few seconds later the other operators in the room are getting calls about a woman lying in the courtyard who came out of a window. Very sad.

Worst of all is that I am sure someone else in this apartment building must have heard this fight but no one called for help until it was too late. Poor kid. Working 911 in NYC during the 70s/80s was a nightmare.”

“The single worst call I’ve ever taken though was a woman who was calling in that she was hearing weird noises in her house. While walking through her house she started screaming and told me there was someone in her house. There we a couple soft pops followed by a gargling sound. After the officers had cleared the house and found her, it finally came out during the investigation that her adult son had killed her while high and freaking out.

Gunshots don’t sound like you’d think on the phone, they’re rather soft. It’s an eerie sound, something so violent being so soft that if you aren’t paying attention you can miss it.”

5. Static on the Line

“My uncle works for dispatch in my town and he recently told my family of the weirdest call he’s ever gotten. He says that he had received a call from a landline one night and when he answered it there was only static on the other end. This happened two more times. Finally, he calls a squad to go check out the address from the caller ID. When the cops got there and walked into the house they immediately saw that there was a dead body. The person had been dead for 5 months.

The craziest part about it was that there was no electricity or any other utility working. So there is no way they should have been able to get those calls into dispatch. But if they hadn’t, who knows how long that person’s body would have stayed there.”

6. A Long Raspy Exhale

“Christmas Eve night I answered 911 for a hysterical lady who was crying so hard she couldn’t breathe. I asked her what was going on and she told me these exact words “my boyfriend and I… we were watching a movie… I fell asleep. I woke up and he wasn’t here.”

I thought this was a little odd so I said, “okay ma’am, do you know where he may have went?” she wasn’t done. She said, “I found him.. in our closet, he hung himself.. with our bed sheets.” I walked her through cutting him down and starting CPR. when in the middle of it, he starts making this long raspy exhale that sounds exactly like something from a horror movie, it’s the rest of his air leaving his lungs. She starts getting hysterical again begging him, “oh my god, he’s breathing, please breathe baby, please breathe..” But I knew that’s not what he was doing.

Police/fire/ambulance got there and of course, the guy was way dead. I felt so bad for that woman. That’s really the only call that has ever stuck with me.”

7. Halloween Night

“My mom was a 911 dispatcher in the early 90’s (I was 5 years old-ish) in Washington State. When I got older, I remember asking her about some of the calls that she could still recall. One in particular was pretty bad. She was working one year on Halloween night and around 10 or 11pm she had a call come in that a couple guys were driving around town with a dummy or something dragging behind their truck. The dummy was falling apart and pieces of clothing/plastic were being torn off and scattered around the city.

Being Halloween, it seemed like a prank but she had a patrol car try to find and stop the truck. As time goes by more and more people started to call in about it. Eventually the patrol car caught up with the truck and it turns out that it was a person.

The guys had gone to a store earlier and when they left, they had backed their truck into an elderly man whose clothes got caught in the rear bumper or whatnot. The two guys never even knew that they were dragging around another human being all across town, for miles.

The elderly man had passed away and those pieces of clothing scattered around town, was his clothing, flesh, and body parts. Still gives me chills.”

8. The Man in the Attic

“I worked dispatch for a total of three months, and in that three months I only received one call I would call creepy. It was the voice of a little boy, and I was trying to be calm because it felt like he was having a hard time breathing. I asked him if he was in danger and he said no, not anymore. I asked him why he had called and he said “well, the man in the attic finally killed my mom. I asked him if he could still see his mom and he said “no, the man took her to the moon” I asked him if he was alone in the house, to which he replied “no, I still have the mans dog here” I asked him what the doggies name was in the hopes I could keep the boy calm, the boy replied “his name is shaitan” I asked him to say it again thinking he said “satan” but he clearly replied “its shaitan”. By the end of the call, the police showed up and I still don’t know what ever happened with the boy and his mother.

But years later I was researching the Djinn/jinn and according to ancient texts, evil spirits like djinn are able to manifest themselves as a dog or other animals and guess what the djin were known as? Shaitan.

I still have a hard time sleeping at night when I think about this call.”

9. Possessed

“I was a 911 call taker 10 years ago when I received one of the creepiest calls ever. It was freezing that night, which usually equaled a calm, quiet shift due to even the criminals not wanting to go outside. Around 3am my call box popped up green and as usual I asked what was the emergency. A man starting frantically screaming that his still was possessed by a demon and tried to cut his heart while he slept. He had ran when the attack started and locked himself in his bathroom. I ask him a series of questions trying to figure out what the hell is going on.

He whispered “There is a demon in my sister’s body, it has been battling me for days. It got free from the chains…” I swear what I heard next chilled me to the core. This unearthly voice began taunting my caller through the door. It didn’t sound like a 20-something woman. It was low and guttural, like she had gargled razor blades before speaking. She continued to growl and speak in a strange sounding language until police arrived. She let out a terrifying scream when the officers broke in, then dead end.

The call was over, I was shaking and had to know what happened? Even my supervisor (who had been listening to the call in real time) was pale and speechless when the line abruptly ended. Before my shift ended the commanding officer on my creepy call called in to tell me what they found. He told me he would have nightmares for the rest of his life.

Apparently, when my caller said his sister got out of her chains, he wasn’t joking around. She still had a chain tied to a bloody handcuff when the officers came in. Her whole body was covered in self-inflicted scratches, her one eye had popped a blood vessel and was bright red. Most of what she was wearing was also shredded and her skin looked like she had been drained of her blood. She was taken in for a psych consult and as you probably guessed, stayed there for a long time. The brother was okay except for deep gouges in his chest. His sister literally tried to dig out his heart.

There was some talk about arresting the brother but nothing ever came of it. I still can vividly remember that voice, it still makes my blood run cold.”

Hi anon, thank you for being so patient. I watched the promo a bunch of times and I also saw the stills from the episode. Now, in case you avoid spoilers, I am not saying I have them, but I am not sure which information was confirmed by the show runners in interviews by now. I don’t count trailers, promo pics and still as spoilers. If the information comes from an interview, trailer or other official sources, it ain’t a spoiler. 

Moving on..

1. Jaime vs Dany ... 

I have seen some people are talking about Jaime’s trial in episode 2 but I was very confused. I was telling a few friends last night - nowhere have I seen it confirmed. I think someone speculated Jaime is on trial and the entire fandom ran with it. Happens a lot. No, we haven’t had any confirmation this is a trial. And I know people think this is the case because he is standing, you have armed guards behind him somewhere, you get a Dany table and a Jon table... well... no. I disagree. 

Is this meant to somehow parallel the Tyrion trial(s)? No... I don’t think so. Mind you, Jaime is not in chains. This to me looks a lot like a petitioner to the court would be received. You have the monarch (in this case the alliance - Dany in the middle, flanked by Jon and S.nsa), and then you have the rest of the court. Plus, it has been established the North side doesn’t like the Dany side, hence the two tables, hence they sit separately since the Northern Lords are like YoU cAn’T SiT WiTh Us. The guards would and should be there by default. Jaime is standing because he is addressing the Ruler. 

Keep in mind, the previous episode finished with Jaime arriving in incognito mode in WF. Maybe Bran calls the guards and Jaime is taken into the Great Hall to explain himself - not only is he arriving in non Lannister colours, he is also arriving by himself. He’s got some explaining to do, since last these people have met, he was to march to Winterfell with an army to aid in the fight against the Army of the dead. 

About Dany’s discourse - Dany and Jaime haven’t officially met. He tried killing her on the Field of Fire 2.0 and he almost got roasted by her baby Drogon (*pets* the best son ever). They also crossed paths in the Dragon Pit Summit (LMAO idk why I am calling it that; I guess it’s because fake truce or armistice is too much; oooooh let’s call it a parley). But they haven’t actually spoken. And Dany has some things to say to the man who killed her father. In my opinion (but who the fuck knows anymore since the writing is killing me and after episode 1 I have so little faith), Dany will have her Queen mask on, she is angry because quite frankly WHERE THE FUCK IS THE ARMY BITCH. Like ofc this means Cersei betrayed them, you don’t need a genius (*cough* S.. *cough*) to tell you that if he is travelling low key and alone. 

Dany needs closure. She will probably tell Jaime - listen, my brother told me all about you; because you killed my dad we had to flee; because you killed my dad we were poor and starving and on the run; the only thing that made us keep going was fantasising about all the ways we would kill you to avenge our father. I don’t blame them, tbh, it’s quite normal, considering what Viserys was feeding her. But! Dany knows now that Viserys was lying; that her father was a mad man. She knows this from Barristan Selmy. So I am REALLY hoping that heavy and meaningful speech that is making Jaime shit his pants (fo real look at his face lmao someone gif it pls) and Tyrion to look 10 years older is ending in something along the lines of “My daddy was cray cray; you did good; you can live; but try to kill me again and you die.” 

Why? Because it makes sense, and because we have seen Jaime fighting in the trailer, so we know he survives this meeting. 

On the other hands, the Starks also have beef with Jaime fookin Lannister - honestly get in line. 

Now... do I think Bran Starkashian the drama queen (present at the meeting) will drop the bomb that Jaime pushed him out the window? Hmmm... I cannot make up my mind. My issue is that if he does, then it’s gonna create more drama, and after episode 1 I think the writers can bring it up and just gloss over it (ugh remember how they dropped the Viserion is a wight news?). But, I also think that since Bran isn’t Bran anymore, then what does this matter to him? If this were still Bran, sure I could have seen a point in revealing it. They could also just do a Bran vs Jaime scene in which Jaime goes to apologise and Bran just says some trippy shit. 

2. S.ansa vs Dany in the Library (sitting in a tree K-I-.. neah we’re not there yet)

So, as it’s framed, I am guessing Sansa says something to Jaime, hence the look Dany has on her face at the table in the Great Hall - must be something surprising. Then I guess we get their private meeting over how y’all bitches should have never trusted Cersei. I guess S.ansa is at least directly talking to Dany not instead of, ya know, AT HER or ABOUT HER. We also have a still with a fake Dany smile, but I am hoping for some meaningful dialogue here. Dany and S.ansa have quite a lot in common so I really want some meaningful chat here so we can move the fuck on from the train wreck that was the episode 1 welcome. Will this be the episode the writers let S.ansa actually use her brain? We’ll see in 80-ish hours. 

3. Jorah x Varys x Tyrion and then some Sam and some Gilly stills 

I think this is either before or after a joint small council meeting. But since Dany is in her white outside coat again, then it must be after Tormund x Edd arrive. They look intense so maybe it’s more likely afterwards. Maybe something happens in that meeting. 

Also the stills of Jon x Arya and the one of Sam x Jon look from the same place. Sam’s intense look shows me that he might have some residual tension with Jon after that shit reveal. Jondry 5eva.  

The still of Sam x Gilly x Little Sam on the bed is so cuuuute. I hope this is post the crypt discussion with Jon and it’s when GIlly knocks some sense into it. Alternatively, it can be the night before the war for some more extra feels. 

4.  The Forge x Arya 

Guessing Arya is going to Gendry to pick up her new weapon and to deliver her Many Faces speech. Is she saying it to Gendry? I think so. Guess this is also where we gonna see sexy Gendry hehe *Gendrya intensifies*

5. And then it gets weird to me... two battle scenes? MAYBE? WHO THE HELL KNOWS ANYMORE

When I first saw the troops moving in the day, I said cool beans, so maybe preparations. But then I see a catapult going off during the day? And more stress? And more people moving. Tormund x Edd arrive during the day too. And we know they are technically behind the dead, since Last Hearth, where Ned Umber was supposed to be was already passed by the dead (since we got the message) so they can’t be arriving before the dead, can they? So how come they arrive and deliver a “they are coming message” and Jon asks how long do they have? How can they be moving faster than the dead? These aren’t slow zombies and Tormund x Edd don’t have a snowmobile laying around. Do they? 

But then you have night battle scenes or rather preparations: Missandei x Grey Worm kiss, Jorah with Heartsbane I hope (I hope this is Sam’s token of I have been a shitty boy to your Queen pls say sorry), Arya with a bow (I am so turned on btw), Jorah riding with the Dothraki, Tyrion on the battlements, Jon on the battlements, Lyanna Mormont in armour!!!! So something is happening as night too. Is this a continuation from the day prep? Is this something else entirely? Then why fire the catapult? Is it a test? Am I overanalysing? Certainly. 

What is sure though is that we won’t get a battle this episode, we will get the build up to it and everything in between. 

6. Jonerys in the crypts 

Ah again some actual leak info I have from when Friki was still allowed to talk (nothing new, just something he has already said), but I’d rather say in a different post. So this is clearly not following the Sam x Jon chat, since here Jon has his furs, and Dany is dressed again in her outside white fur coat. I am hoping it will end the fucking drama once and for all and I am hoping they let Dany speak for herself more, since she was really toning it down in episode 1, in hopes of appeasing the North. Tasha Dougé, Day 3

Day 3 started with me blogging about Day 2.  As most of us know, time flies when we are having fun even when you are writing about.  So before I knew it, it was almost time for me to dash out the door.  On top of that, the days are all mushed into one in my head.  Sunday usually means a day of rest-ish, until I remember that means the ferry is on a rest-ish schedule too.  That shifted the 8:30am time on my itinerary to a realistic 9am ferry.  I have never been to Staten Island, except for one time.  I was driving home from the beach with some friends.  The story or joke was so funny/distracting that I laughed myself right off the wrong exit on the BQE  and onto the Verrazano bridge.  (I swear that bridge is a dollar for every minute it takes to get across.)  Let me not digress because today was new day.

I get to SI by 9:25am.  I was dashing to find my bus.  There were about 3 lanes and I have to find the S40.  The bus schedule said that there was a 9:20 and the next was for 9:50.  Thank goodness a bus rolled right up around 9:30.  YES!!  My bus driver was zooming.  Zooming so fast, I almost missed my stop.  I get off and ask for directions to the Chinese Scholar Garden.  The person’s name was Jessica.  She told me to follow her since she was going to same way.  Turns out the garden is part of Snug Harbor.  There is so much to see there that I have to come back.  Jessica and I parted ways and I headed over to the garden.  I was the second person there.  Success!  The park rangers came about 10 mins later and the group assembled.  We do a little restoration work before going into the garden.  My body was like “more manual labor,” my toes were like “we are exposed and not ready for this,” but my spirit was ready to go.  (Don’t judge my body.  We still have more than enough residual sheltering-in-place effects that we have to shake off.)  I was quickly transported to a time when I galvanized some friends and community members to clean up our local park.  It was a great memory to ground me in the moment.  It felt great to aesthetically and spiritually clear out debris from the cobblestone culverts making way for the water to flow.  We were doing this work in the Healing Garden that was dedicated to the 267 Staten Islanders who perished on September 11, 2001.

Next, we headed over to the Chinese Scholar Garden for a guided tour by the rangers.  It was breathtaking.  We walked through a bamboo forest and there was water everywhere.  There is so much to say about the garden, but I will narrow it down.  The space was built with not one nail or any glue. Yep, that’s right.  Not a SINGLE nail.  This is the second structure that I have come across where the same is true.  If you are ever in Thailand, check out the Sanctuary of Truth.  You can thank me later.  The garden is so serene and peaceful.  Yes, it is picturesque too.  More so, I was touched my the intentionality and symbolism imbued into everything.  I chose to highlight the stair bridge because the steps are so small to remind us to take our time in life.  Such a poignant reminder for all of us, especially in this moment.  However, the tour ran over 30 mins and taking my “time” ran out the window.

I get back at to the ferry bus terminal roughly by 1pm (minus 5mins or so).  According to google maps, my journey to the next destination is about an hour.  The event starts at 2pm.  Yikes!  As I am waiting on the bus, I get approached by a couple visiting from Columbia.  The gentleman spoke little english, but I could gather that they wanted to go the historical Richmond town area.  Remember, I have never been to S.I., but they needed help.  I googled the location and tell them the take the S74. I noticed that they went to the wrong stop.  I went after them because it turns out we could both take the S74.  I got their attention and I told them to follow me.  We dashed across the bus lanes to just catch the next bus.  It turned out that their stop was the next one after mine.  We rode on the bus for about 40 or so mins.  I am convinced that all S.I. bus drivers are aspiring or retired NASCAR drivers.  Hour commute where?  I informed the bus driver where they were going and said farewell to the Columbian couple.

Google said that my destination was a 9 min walk from the bus stop.  9 minutes for whom?  The picture doesn’t do that hill justice and the temperature was over 80 degrees.  Nonetheless, off I went.  A sidewalk made a cameo appearance like twice.  The houses are huge and gorgeous.  But where was I and did google lie?  I clearly was in residential area, but I was supposed to be headed to the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art.  I continued to let the blue dot guide my way as cars drove by me on the non-sidewalk/shoulder road.  Despite my disbelief, the space exists!  Google didn’t lie!  I followed a woman down some stairs to where I would be attending a singing bowl mediation led by Leslee Penny.  I signed in with Frank at the front desk.  The meditation was exactly what the doctor ordered.  My body immediately responded the C bowl, which is associated with the root chakra.  During the session, I felt sensations happening in the back of my arms, lower back and throat.  After the session, I was still feeling all the vibrations.  I was tempted to purchased a singing bowl, but Leslee was honest about what to look for in a bowl.  It was a C bowl, but she advised me to find a bowl where I could play the rim.  I said my thank yous and before I could leave, the same woman that I had followed into the space asked if I wanted a ride.  She saw me walking up the non-sidewalk/shoulder road earlier, felt for me, but hesitated because she didn’t know where I was going.  As per her words, we just participated in something spiritual and now felt comfortable to ask me about the ride.  I graciously accepted.

Christine and I had a great conversation during our ride back to the ferry.  She was originally from Brooklyn and moved to SI either 20 or 28 years ago.  She told me that there was tons of farmland up until the early 80s.  She used to commute to the city and it would be a total of three hours per day.  Ufff.  I could never.  I told her that was similar to my Dad’s commute to Jersey (pre-COVID).  We laughed about my trip over the Verrazano bridge and how the toll guy had no sympathy for me when I tried to get out of paying the toll.  I mean it was an accident.  She said the same thing happened to her.  Yes in the era of COVID, people can show up for community and do so safely.  Christine, thank you.  Your gesture is another reminder that humanity still exists. Grateful and blessed for another day.  Thanks Staten Island.  I will be back.  Ready for Day 4.

911 Operators Describe the Most Disturbing Calls they’ve Ever Taken

1. “Daddy’s Eye Fell Out”

“Had a call for a brother who killed his other brother with a hammer (the pick part) while the victim’s little daughter was watching. The daughter called us from another room and told us her daddy’s eye fell out.

Perp was apprehended, daughter taken by relative. Had to smoke after that one, and I don’t even smoke.”

2. “I Need your Help”

“There was an old couple who lived on a run-down ranch house about 20 miles east of town. When the husband passed away, the woman would call 911 at least three times a week, asking for assistance with very mundane tasks not normally dealt to first responders. “I need help turning the thermostat up”, “I need help boiling water for my tea”, etc.

The woman developed dementia, and eventually, it progressed to the point where she believed she was calling 911 to ask her deceased husband for help. All of the dispatchers would recognize the address immediately, even though all she could say was “(husband’s name), I need help. Please come home and help me”

One day she called, and again was only able to repeat her husband’s (I’ll call him “John”) name. “John, I need help. Please come home and help me John.” By the time the first responders arrived on scene, they found the woman lying dead in her bed. The first unit on scene called dispatch to confirm that it was the woman herself who had called 911, as rigor Morris had already set in. We wrote it off as the fact that the heater in her house wasn’t working, and the ambient temperature in the room was about 50 degrees.

We continued to receive 911 calls from that woman, at that address for just over a year after she passed away. Even after her home was vandalized, and burned to the ground, the phone calls did not stop. “John, I need your help. John, please come home and help me.” We were obligated to send a response each and every time, but not once did we find anyone on or near the property.

Multiple calls to the phone company confirmed that the phone line had been disconnected, and the call was not coming from another address.”

“1979 NYC. Got a call from a crying child – a little boy – saying his mom and dad were fighting and his dad said he was going to throw the mom out of the window. I could hear a terrible fight going on in the background – woman screaming, things breaking, man yelling, etc. The poor kid didn’t know his address. We didn’t have the technology for call ID and would have to use reverse telephone books. A trace would take forever. Anyway while I’m trying to get the address I hear a horrific scream and glass breaking. While walking through her house she started screaming and told me there was someone in her house. There we a couple soft pops followed by a gargling sound. “My uncle works for dispatch in my town and he recently told my family of the weirdest call he’s ever gotten. He says that he had received a call from a landline one night and when he answered it there was only static on the other end. This happened two more times. Finally, he calls a squad to go check out the address from the caller ID. When the cops got there and walked into the house they immediately saw that there was a dead body. The person had been dead for 5 months.

6. A Long Raspy Exhale

“Christmas Eve night I answered 911 for a hysterical lady who was crying so hard she couldn’t breathe. I asked her what was going on and she told me these exact words “my boyfriend and I… we were watching a movie… I fell asleep. I woke up and he wasn’t here.”

I thought this was a little odd so I said, “okay ma’am, do you know where he may have went?” she wasn’t done. She said, “I found him.. in our closet, he hung himself.. with our bed sheets.” I walked her through cutting him down and starting CPR. when in the middle of it, he starts making this long raspy exhale that sounds exactly like something from a horror movie, it’s the rest of his air leaving his lungs. She starts getting hysterical again begging him, “oh my god, he’s breathing, please breathe baby, please breathe..” But I knew that’s not what he was doing.

Police/fire/ambulance got there and of course, the guy was way dead. I felt so bad for that woman. That’s really the only call that has ever stuck with me.”

7. Halloween Night

“My mom was a 911 dispatcher in the early 90’s (I was 5 years old-ish) in Washington State. When I got older, I remember asking her about some of the calls that she could still recall. One in particular was pretty bad. She was working one year on Halloween night and around 10 or 11pm she had a call come in that a couple guys were driving around town with a dummy or something dragging behind their truck. The dummy was falling apart and pieces of clothing/plastic were being torn off and scattered around the city.

Being Halloween, it seemed like a prank but she had a patrol car try to find and stop the truck. As time goes by more and more people started to call in about it. Eventually the patrol car caught up with the truck and it turns out that it was a person.

The guys had gone to a store earlier and when they left, they had backed their truck into an elderly man whose clothes got caught in the rear bumper or whatnot. The two guys never even knew that they were dragging around another human being all across town, for miles.

The elderly man had passed away and those pieces of clothing scattered around town, was his clothing, flesh, and body parts. Still gives me chills.”

“I worked dispatch for a total of three months, and in that three months I only received one call I would call creepy. It was the voice of a little boy, and I was trying to be calm because it felt like he was having a hard time breathing. I asked him if he was in danger and he said no, not anymore. I asked him why he had called and he said “well, the man in the attic finally killed my mom. I asked him if he could still see his mom and he said “no, the man took her to the moon” I asked him if he was alone in the house, to which he replied “no, I still have the mans dog here” I asked him what the doggies name was in the hopes I could keep the boy calm, the boy replied “his name is shaitan” I asked him to say it again thinking he said “satan” but he clearly replied “its shaitan”. But years later I was researching the Djinn/jinn and according to ancient texts, evil spirits like djinn are able to manifest themselves as a dog or other animals and guess what the djin were known as? Shaitan.

9. Possessed

“I was a 911 call taker 10 years ago when I received one of the creepiest calls ever. It was freezing that night, which usually equaled a calm, quiet shift due to even the criminals not wanting to go outside. Around 3am my call box popped up green and as usual I asked what was the emergency. A man starting frantically screaming that his still was possessed by a demon and tried to cut his heart while he slept. He had ran when the attack started and locked himself in his bathroom. The call was over, I was shaking and had to know what happened? Even my supervisor (who had been listening to the call in real time) was pale and speechless when the line abruptly ended. Before my shift ended the commanding officer on my creepy call called in to tell me what they found. He told me he would have nightmares for the rest of his life.

Apparently, when my caller said his sister got out of her chains, he wasn’t joking around. She still had a chain tied to a bloody handcuff when the officers came in. Her whole body was covered in self-inflicted scratches, her one eye had popped a blood vessel and was bright red. Most of what she was wearing was also shredded and her skin looked like she had been drained of her blood. She was taken in for a psych consult and as you probably guessed, stayed there for a long time. The brother was okay except for deep gouges in his chest. His sister literally tried to dig out his heart.

There was some talk about arresting the brother but nothing ever came of it. I still can vividly remember that voice, it still makes my blood run cold.”

hi guys. today snoopy let me touch more of her while i was petting and brushing her. so i took care of some of the more scruffy looking spots around her stomach.

also i got up at 6:40 and was Extremely Unhappy for the entire morning. we got a couple real gems of questions at ta orientation- “what if a student is faking a disability?” “what if a ta is falsely accused of sexual harassment?” “what if you genuinely compliment a black person like ‘you did really great today’ and they just get mad for no reason?” “i think they should try just not being offended.”

the sexual assault talk went on for like 20 minutes and by the time we got through the asinine questions about girls randomly accusing their well-meaning tas of sexual harassment i was so exhausted that i wanted to die. i complained about it to the other physics students i was sitting by. 

oh yeah, i met some other physics students. i like them a lot. i also liked the 90-minute lecture a LOT. the idea of deep learning vs surface learning or strategic learning really affected me. i found the guy’s books online for like 20 dollars too. might look into that more.

and i met with my graduate adviser only one minute late. i had underestimated the size of campus when i took off for the physics building after lunch. we ended up talking for twice my appointment time just about random stuff like second languages since he was chinese american. but within the first three minutes of our meeting he mentioned he was worried and that i would have to work REALLY HARD to keep my gpa at an acceptable level during grad school. it was really demoralizing to feel like he didn’t have any confidence in me. 

i asked him if this was about my villanova transcript and he said yeah. i couldn’t really get into a sob story or anything so i just said that it had been a really bad environment for me. he asked “what if this is a bad environment for you too?” and i didn’t really have a good answer. i worried about it a lot after i headed back to the orientation building.

i saw in the group chat that the other majors had peaced out so i walked home. it took like 40 minutes because i got turned around while i was looking at my phone and it was too cloudy to see the sun. when i got home i was drenched. 

i can’t tell if snoop is gaining weight or if i’m just getting used to how bony she is and she feels softer because i’m expecting it. or maybe it’s because her fur looks a lot better now that i’ve brushed and wiped for a couple days. i catch her snacking at her food bowl every now and then and she’ll eat out of my hand until she isn’t hungry any more at least, but i don’t find a lot in her litter box. she seems very happy when i’m paying attention to her and she’s still trying out a couple different perches. yesterday i noticed after i had given her several handfuls of cookies that she was cleaning her own paws and face for the first time.

i guess i am impatient. i know i’ve only known her for five days but i have already imprinted and want her to be a happy spoiled old cat. well i mean, i want all dogs and cats and every animal ever to be happy and spoiled and fawned over. 

i’m starting to understand that cats, at least house cats, seem to be pretty happy with their very small territories. dogs go nuts if they can’t get outside, but ping and now snoopy don’t seem to be very interested in it. well, ping was, because he liked going under the porch. but snoopy avoids the door and just sits in the windowsill when it’s sunny. so i dunno.

still feeling pretty sick after i eat... dinner was a little better today. hopefully it will continue to get better and i don’t still have a serious internal organ problem.

the other night i dreamed i was in a field that was supposed to belong to a farm. but there were big metal spires sticking out of the ground everywhere and they were all partially obscured by fog. on the horizon there was a city skyline of the spires. they weren’t doing anything but i really hated them and every time i had to go out walking in the field my shoulders would be up around my ears waiting for the bad thing to happen already. but it didn’t- at least, i woke up before it did.

tomorrow i will try to ride the bus to school. i want to get there at 9-ish to start studying with my classmates. i did actually study some physics today! i didn’t do any problems, but i watched through the whole recommended lecture we got from the quantum professor and i really enjoyed it and a lot of stuff started coming back to me. 

my graduate adviser put a lot of emphasis on being able to solve problems by myself. he said it was good to get help and to work together in groups, but that i would have to solve my own problems and do my own work if i wanted to be successful. 

i dunno i just don’t know what hard work looks like. i feel like i barely spend any time on myself anyway and now they want more? even my me-time is eaten up by a whole lot of doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to take care of myself. i practically just stare at the wall for hours. at least the last few days i’ve been making use of my evenings with all the paperwork and the emails and the calendar setup and the phone calls. 

i feel like i missed my chance to “get over” my depression. like maybe at this point in the game it’s too late to learn how to be confident. because i KNOW my lack of confidence is really hurting my performance in class. i know that. i know that if i pretend to be more confident i will genuinely feel more confident and that will boost my test scores, at least in theory. (in practice i don’t think it actually helped which didn’t help my confidence at all.) 

what is hard work? is it sacrificing the things you like to do in order to do the things you have to do? i already don’t do any of the things i like to do, except maybe pokemon, which takes literally less than ten minutes of my day the vast majority of days. i don’t read books, i don’t go on long walks just to enjoy fresh air, i don’t watch any of the movies or play any of the games i’ve had sitting on my desk for years now. i just don’t have any energy to actually sit and enjoy myself. it feels like 10% of my energy goes toward taking care of myself (which is fine...), 10% of my energy goes toward actually doing physics, and 80% of my energy goes toward yelling at myself to do something, ANYTHING, that might be useful or at least active in any way. 80% of my energy goes toward “don’t think about killing myself” and you know how it is when you try not to think about a specific thing. 

the last nine months i feel like i’ve just been along for the ride in my own life. i can’t imagine things that are not directly in front of me. my memories feel vague and like i am making them up or being inaccurate in some self-serving way. poor sammie! her dad grabbed her even when she told him to stop. but did that REALLY happen? did it really happen like that? am i just being a whiny baby? is this what learned helplessness is? how do you stop being helpless? how do i stop asking people to do things for me, or expecting things to just get done, without putting a gargantuan effort into actually doing it? just putting myself in an environment where i CAN succeed isn’t enough. i have to actually do the succeeding. but i don’t know how to do anything. all i know how to do is ride it out, or follow the directions, or keep my head down while the world morphs around me. 

at least when i was getting beat by mom all the time i still wanted to ask questions. i still wanted the answers to those questions. now it just feels like i’m laying facedown all the time.

what am i gonna do about it? go through the motions some more? i can set up a therapy appointment and attend it and do work while at the appointment, but i gotta have the energy to do work outside of the appointment too if i actually want to get better. but i don’t know if i can get better. and trying and failing is so painful. mom makes sure of that.
