Mr Movie Star: Johnny Cage x reader
Tumblr media
During a banquet thrown by empress sindel, it seems you have caught a certain movie stars eye
Warnings: swearing | gif creds: @mortal-kombat-1
----
Kitana is your best friend; the two of you grew up together, so you're quite close with her and her family. Though unlike the princesses', you aren't royalty, and while that is true it doesn't stop the empress from inviting you to the royal banquet [which you hesitantly decide to go to]
-Night of banquet-
It's a beautiful night, one that is often hard to come across. The table is filled with delicious food, and many a people occupy the space, such as; earthrealms champion Raiden, Kung Lao, Kenshi Takahashi, Lord Liu Kang, and Johnny Cage.
Alone and bored out of your mind, you sit at the end of the table hoping no one will come up with you although the empress wanted you to interact.
"Good evening..."
That voice. You turn your head to the right, your eyes landing on-
"Johnny Cage?"
and, with a nod, the man gives you his signature smile.
"The one and only."
Johnny Cage is...interesting. He's a movie-star, you overheard that his wife had left him, and that he has sento which belongs to Kenshi's family. It's a surprise you were able to get that much information on him considering this is the first time you've met the man.
"...are you..."
"No, i'm not royalty.", you finish, with an awkward chuckle. "...i'm close with the family. Kitana is my best friend and we grew up together, though despite not being apart of this family I was still "forced" to come."
Johnny let's out a soft chuckle, his right hand moving to run through his hair, his soft brown eyes looking into yours. It's not uncomfortable however, he has a warm sort of energy.
"...you're an earthrealmer?"
"Yep. Movie star, martial artist, kinda famous.", he gloats with a smirk...then he leans in. "...and also single." though while he seems confident on the outside it's evident he's hurting from this divorce. That he's using other means to cover this up, and he hopes you can see through this, but you can't.
"I'm...sorry, about your divorce."
Johnny pauses...he looks away, his demeanor slipping, then he grabs some wine and takes a sip.
"Not sure how you found out, but it's fine." John puts the wine glass down and sighs. "Cris was right, about everything. I spent too much on shit, and i've gotten too lost in the "johnny cage" persona, that I lost the person I love the most...and I don't think we'll be getting back together."
Johnny sighs and looks at you.
"Look, i'm not trying to use you as a distraction if it's coming across that way. You seem like a nice person, and i'd like to get to know you...if you wanted?"
He then proceeds to hold out his hand;
"So, let's start again. I'm John Carlton."
His voice is softer than before, he has a small smile on his face a genuine one. He seems more comfortable and more open having opened up about what happened, and is willing to get to know you.
You take his hand, and a small smile appears.
"I'm (y/n) (l/n)."
-----
"Tonight was wonderful." you say as John walks you to your home, and John gives a nod.
"It's nice to focus on something other than myself." he jokes, then his eyes go to your house which you've arrived at. You stop at the door and John looks at you, a bit awkward, though that smile doesn't disappear.
"I hope we meet again John..."
"Me too (y/n)."
The two of you stand there, just staring at eachother, before you snap out of it and turn to walk into your house. Though when you hear his voice, and you look down back at him, you notice how his soft brown eyes look into yours, and it's almost like you're home. Like he's home.
"John..."
"Can I...kiss you?"
At first he didn’t want to because of his ex, but during this night and getting to know you, he’s begun to fall for you…and he realises getting back with his ex is basically impossible.
Though, again, he’s not trying to use you as a distraction he genuinely likes you and wonders if things will go anywhere [which he does hope even if the split still hurts]
You step forward, and with a nod giving him the go ahead, he leans down and kisses you. Which makes you melt. With his hand now in yours, as he draws lines on your skin, the two of you stand there kissing under the street light.
Then, with the goofiest smile, you both pull away, and John gives you a sweet forehead kiss. The two of you just look at eachother, before he lets your hand go and turns to walk off; "i'll see you around sweetheart.", and with a wink, and that sweet smile, he walks off leaving you alone, smiling like crazy.

Kanzashi.
Character: Kenshi Takahashi
Content: fluff, fem reader, Kenshi doing your hair.
Tumblr media
Though he couldn't see it, Kenshi stood in front of Sento and had his head tilted upward facing its display, knowing exactly where it was.
He reached out and stroked the smooth black sheath of the blade, feeling his fingertips glide. Though he couldn't see, he could remember how the lovely blade looked, color and embellishments.
He brought his hand down slightly and touched the object below it. Though a lot smaller than the blade, this thing was just as precious, considering how it was on a stand of its own. It was a kanzashi, a Japanese ornamental hairpin that belonged to his mother. It was an heirloom passed down to female members of the family. If a mother had no daughters, it would be passed down to the wife of the eldest son. It promised bountiful luck and protection to the wearer.
The hairpin was made of pure gold, decked with forged red camellias, flowers that symbolized love, humility, and loyalty. Golden rings and tassels hung from it's tightly twined black threads, making it a stunning and highly prized work of art. Its continual bequeathing did nothing to tarnish the beauty of the hairpin, and it remained as gorgeous as ever.
“Kenshi!”
An unmistakable voice called in the distance, muffled slightly by walls and doors, which garnered his attention. It was you, his girlfriend of three years. Smiling, he turned to the direction of your voice.
The sliding door opened with a soft rattle and he heard your footsteps against the soft tatami mats.
“There you are,” you sighed, now approaching him; he could hear you smile. “I was looking all over for you.”
“What happened?” he asked with mingled curiosity and concern, holding out his hand in search of you.
You moved closer to him and clasped his hand. “Nothing happened,” you assured, “I just needed help with my hair.”
You had recently broken your arm during training, and doing menial things was really difficult. Kenshi tried to help you as much as he could, but you hated to ask a blind man to assist you. The only thing you allowed him to do was to tie your hair whenever you needed it, since he found pleasure in it.
“Of course,” he smiled.
You stood in front, your back facing him and guided his hands to your hair. He first felt your hair by stroking it and it was smooth, just like Sento's sheath.
He took a moment to undo the tangles in your hair by combing it with his fingers. It felt like a great massage to feel his fingertips run against your scalp, and you leaned into his touch.
“How do you want me to do your hair?” he asked, gathering your hair in his hands and twisting it around as if to try putting it in a bun.
“Just a ponytail.”
Kenshi would not be satisfied with just a ponytail. He believed that such a beautiful lady like you ought to wear her hair intricately decorated. But he decided to go along with your wish.
He let your hair go and combed his fingers through the strands once again. You could feel his fingers touch your neck, and despite the many years, his touch still made you feel jittery. He gathered the stray strands of hair at the base of your neck and gently tugged the tail downwards, making your head go up slightly. He ran his rugged, calloused hand over your head, and ran his fingers against your temples to tuck any remaining hair into the tail.
He loved how silky your hair was, and enjoyed the smell of shampoo wafting from it.
“Give me the hair tie,” he said, holding his hand out over your shoulder.
You placed the hair tie on his palm, which he immediately clamped between his pursed lips. He swiped his hands over your head, neck, and sides once again and then tied the hair tie around the tail.
“Thanks, sweetie,” you said gleefully.
He could feel a little breeze on his face, and could tell that you were excitedly swishing around the ponytail to test how secure it was, like you always did. Just as you were about to leave, he stopped you.
“Hold on a minute. I need you to close your eyes.” he suddenly said.
“Why?” He figured you turned to face him, considering how your voice seemed louder.
“Just trust me.”
You obeyed and closed your eyes. Since Kenshi was still in front of the prized display, he turned around and took the precious kanzashi. Holding it in both his hands, he now asked you to open your eyes.
“This… This is the hairpin your mother gave you.” you said as soon as you had opened your eyes. He could hear the surprise in your voice.
“I'll put it in your hair. Turn around now.” Kenshi put his hands on your shoulders and turned you around.
“But Kenshi…” you paused but still allowed him to turn you around, and you told him about the rule of passing down the hairpin. “I'm not your wife. Why would you give it to me?”
Kenshi was silent as he twisted your hair in a simple bun and secured it with the gorgeous hairpin. Though he couldn't see it, he knew it looked stunning on you, and enhanced your existing beauty.
“Do you want to be my wife?” he gulped nervously, feeling his face turn hot as he busied his hand with adjusting your hair, when it clearly didn't need any.
Without hesitation, you exclaimed, “Yes!” and said it so loudly that you nearly busted Kenshi's eardrums.
“Hey, don't add to the list of my disabilities,” he said with a chuckle, obviously joking. He never considered his blindness a disability, but a blessing, and he was sure to say the same if he became deaf.
You giggled. “Sorry,” you said cutely as you then took his rugged, tattooed hands and looked at the floor-length mirror on your right, “I can see myself in the mirror, and the hairpin looks really nice on me. I wish you could see it.”
“I know what you look like, so I can imagine how you look, and I know you're the most beautiful woman I've ever laid eyes on.” He held your wrists and lifted your arms up to rest them on his shoulders.
Understanding what he wanted, you moved closer to him and wrapped your arms around his neck. His hands let your wrists go, and feeling your body up against his, his hands immediately found their place on your waist.
“What if I become ugly and you didn't know? Would you still love me?” you asked in a whisper as your fingers trailed up his neck and combed through his short black hair.
“No matter how you look, my dear, I'll always love you. I don't love you just because I find you beautiful…” he paused to gently rub your waist, making you sigh, “I love you because you have a pure heart, and you've been with me through thick and thin.”
He paused, feeling a sob choke his throat. It wasn't everyday he felt emotional like this, especially for a Japanese man of his caliber. It was only in front of you he could feel comfortable being emotional, and your arms were his hiding place.
He continued, swallowing down his sobs to speak and try and speak clearly, only for it to still be slightly muddled with emotion, “I've had you when I had my eyes, and I thought you wouldn't stay when I became blind.” His voice was choked again, and you tightened your arms around him and rubbed his shoulder.
“But you stayed. And you cared for me, helped me.” He responded to you by tightening his grip around your waist, pulling you still closer. Those were only a few words, but in them were condensed his memories of you, three years worth of your love, service, and patience toward him when he needed it the most.
“I could not have asked for a better partner than you. I cannot imagine loving anyone that's not you.”
You smiled at this, and snuggled your face in his neck. He paused again, and you didn't speak yet, sensing that he had more to say. His arms tightened further around you.
“My love for you is blind,” he said with a chuckle,“and that's why I want to marry you.”
You smiled. While it wasn't everyday that he was emotional, it was also not everyday that he expressed his love for you in long winded speeches, apart from the usual and genuine “I love you”. You knew he was an awkward man who knew how to show his love through action and service, the typical Asian way. Yet you appreciated his often clumsy efforts to verbally express his affection for you, knowing that you loved to hear it, and that it would make the relationship sweeter.
And this speech had such an effect.
“Have I answered your question?” he asked, now feeling your hand caress his rough, stubbly jaw.
You brushed your thumb against his lower lip so as to not give him a surprise, and in response to his question, kissed him. He eagerly kissed back, and held you tighter against him.
His hand traveled up your back, to the nape of your neck, and to the back of your head, and he felt the cold metal of the precious kanzashi against his fingers. The threads and tassels twisted around his fingers as you two shared this special kiss.
Thoughts and imaginations passed through his buzzing mind, thinking about what it would be like to be husband and wife, living together closer than ever, having children, growing gray together, in sickness and in health, through wealth and poverty.
He sighed contentedly as he kissed you, knowing that down the line, it was only going to get better. Sweeter with age, just like wine.
Untarnished like the kanzashi.
End.

Anime i’ve Watched
That begin with a A!
Yep this is how i’m going to bring over all the anime and manga i’ve watched and posted about on the old blog. It’s not so detailed but it will have to do. Anything new I watch or read from this point on will have their own posts.
Acchi Kocchi (TV) (Place to Place):
Genres: slice of life, comedy, romance, school
Tumblr media
Synopsis: Feelings may come and go, but true love always remains in the heart. Tsumiki Miniwa is in love with her best friend, Io Otonashi. For her, confessing is nearly impossible; but to her friends, they seem to be the perfect match. Cute and petite, Tsumiki comes off more as a friend, and Io's attitude toward her is friendlier than toward others. Despite the constant teasing and obvious hints that his friends have been dropping, Io always seems to miss the signs. Throughout her everyday school life, Tsumiki spends time with her friends and Io. Will she finally muster enough courage to confess her true feelings? [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Tumblr media
My Rating: 8/10
Finished airing in 2012 with a total of 12 Episodes.
My Thoughts: It’s been ages since watching this one so I can’t say I remember it well but the rating tells me it was at least partway decent and I imagine I thought the animation/ character design was rather cute (though not to my usual tastes). A feel good sort of anime with cutesy romance? If any of you guys have watched this anime and have anything to share feel free to send it my way so people can make an informed decision before viewing if they so wish!
Akatsuki no Yona (Yona of the Dawn):
Genres: action, adventure, comedy, fantasy, romance, shoujo
Tumblr media
Synopsis:  Princess Yona lives a life of luxury and ease, completely sheltered from the problems of the seemingly peaceful Kingdom of Kouka; however, the sudden murder of the king and betrayal of her beloved cousin Su-won places Yona's life in mortal peril. Forced to escape only with Son Hak, who is both her childhood friend and bodyguard, the naïve princess soon discovers that Kouka is not the idyllic place she envisioned it to be. Poverty, strife, and corruption run rampant, making reclaiming the throne nothing more than a wishful fantasy given the kingdom's current state. Based on the popular manga of the same name by Mizuho Kusanagi, Akatsuki no Yona follows Princess Yona on a coming-of-age adventure as she faces the harsh realities of her kingdom. With only a mysterious legend to guide her, Yona must discover a way to restore Kouka to its former glory while being pursued relentlessly by the forces of the new King of Kouka. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Tumblr media
My Rating: 7.5/10
Finished airing in 2015 with a total of 24 episodes.
My Thoughts: I recall having an issue with the pacing in the beginning but an overwhelming love for the sheltered to fierce main character and reverse harem vibes with all those pretty men. The artwork was nothing special most of the time, being rather muted and the themes were hit and miss but overall I recall this being a rather decent series. That being said, I was far more generous with my rating of the manga, which is still ongoing and a great series to read!
Akiba's Trip The Animation
Genres: action, comedy, supernatural, ecchi
Tumblr media
Synopsis:  Otaku siblings Tamotsu and Niwaka Denkigai are shopping in Akihabara when it is overrun by vampiric cosplaying monsters! These creatures, known as "Bugged Ones," can possess anyone they bite and soon they begin causing mayhem across the city. As Tamotsu finds himself at the mercy of one of these creatures, he is rescued by the mysterious baseball bat-wielding Matome Mayonaka. Together, they fight through several more encounters with the Bugged Ones, but before long, Tamotsu is fatally wounded protecting Matome. With no other choice, she revives him as a high level Bugged One—just like her! Tamotsu and Matome, along with excitable otaku cosplayer Arisa Ahokainen, make up the group "The Electric Mayonnaise" and they begin dispatching the Bugged Ones in the only way they know how: by ripping off their clothes and exposing them to sunlight! [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Tumblr media
My Rating: 4/10
Finished airing in 2017 with a total of 13 episodes.
My Thoughts: That’s a hard no from me. Would not suggest this one. I was drawn in by the art/ animation/ character design and just didn’t know when to quit. Not worth the time it takes to finish the 13 episodes in my personal opinion.
Amaama to Inazuma (Sweetness & Lightning):
Genres: comedy, slice of life, seinen
Tumblr media
Synopsis:  Since the death of his wife, Kouhei Inuzuka has been caring for his young daughter Tsumugi to the best of his abilities. However, with his lack of culinary knowledge and his busy job as a teacher, he is left relying on ready-made meals from convenience stores to feed the little girl. Frustrated at his own incapability to provide a fresh, nutritious meal for his daughter, Kouhei takes up an offer from his student, Kotori Iida, to come have dinner at her family's restaurant. But on their very first visit, the father and daughter discover that the restaurant is often closed due to Kotori's mother being away for work and that Kotori often eats alone. After much pleading from his pupil, Kouhei decides to continue to go to the restaurant with Tsumugi to cook and share delicious homemade food with Kotori. Amaama to Inazuma follows the heartwarming story of a caring father trying his hardest to make his adorable little daughter happy, while exploring the meanings and values behind cooking, family, and the warm meals at home that are often taken for granted. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Tumblr media
My Rating: 9/10
Finished airing in 2016 with a total of 12 episodes.
My Thoughts: Heartwarming and painfully sweet. A story about family with a culinary twist. Lovely artwork/ animation/ character design which perfectly compliments the characters and story. A great one to watch if you’re looking for something light but capable of tugging at your heartstrings a bit.
Amagi Brilliant Park:
Genres: comedy, drama, fantasy, magic
Tumblr media
Synopsis:  Seiya Kanie, a smart and extremely narcissistic high school student, believes that the beautiful but reserved Isuzu Sento has invited him on a date at an amusement park called Amagi Brilliant Park. Much to his chagrin, not only is the location a run-down facility, the supposed date is merely a recruitment tour where Sento and Princess Latifa Fleuranza, the owner of the theme park, ask him to become the park's new manager. Their cause for desperation? As stipulated in a land-use contract, Amagi has less than three months to meet a quota of 500,000 guests, or the park will be closed for good and the land redeveloped by a greedy real-estate company. Seiya is won over by the revelation that Amagi is no ordinary amusement park; many of its employees are Maple Landers—mysterious magical beings who live in the human world and are nourished by the energy created by people having fun. Entrusted with the hopes and dreams of this far-off enchanted land, Seiya must now use his many skills to bring Amagi back on its feet, or watch it crumble before his eyes. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Tumblr media
My Rating: 7.5/10
Finished airing in 2014 with a total of 13 episodes. (Also has two OVA’s/specials)
My Thoughts: An interesting setting and a cute male lead made even better thanks to the excellent art and character design. A decent comedy with art/ animation/ character design that was right up my alley.
Amnesia:
Genres: reverse harem, mystery, romance, fantasy, josei
Tumblr media
Synopsis: After fainting at work, a young lady awakens in the back room of the café she works at with no memory of her life or those around her. Two of her friends, whom she soon learns are named Shin and Toma, are called to help her get home safely. Once she is alone, she meets a spectral boy named Orion that only she can see and hear. He explains that she lost her memories because of his chance visit to her world, so he vows to help her remember who she is.
However, regaining her departed memories without worrying those around her may be more difficult than she realizes. In addition to the gloomy Shin and the protective Toma, she must be wary of arousing the suspicions of the captivating Ikki, the quick-witted Kent, and a mysterious man who lurks in the distance. As her amnesia entangles her in the lives of each of these men, her fragmented memories return piece by piece, and the mysteries of her circumstances slowly come to light.
[Written by MAL Rewrite]
Tumblr media
My Rating: 3/10
Finished airing in 2013 with a total of 12 episodes.
My Thoughts: A blank piece of paper for a female lead and cast of potential suitors that range from kind of crappy to the creepiest of creeps. What isn’t there to love? I vaguely recall my reverse harem kick where I consumed each and every reverse Harem I could get my hands on, hoping that at least one of them would be properly satisfying... They never were. Don’t even bother watching this one. You know unless what I described above is your sort of thing.

“You’ve just turned 82. You are still beautiful, graceful and desirable. We’ve lived together now for 58 years and I love you more than ever. Lately I’ve fallen in love with you all over again and I once more carry inside me a gnawing emptiness that can only be filled by your body snuggled up against mine. At night I sometimes see the figure of a man, on an empty road in a deserted landscape, walking behind a hearse. I am that man. It's you the hearse is carrying away. I don’t want to be there for your cremation; I don’t want to be given an urn with your ashes in it. I hear the voice of Kathleen Ferrier singing, ‘Die Welt ist leer, Ich will nicht leben mehr, The world is empty, I don't want to live anymore’ and I wake up. I check your breathing, my hand brushes over you. Each of us would like not to survive the other’s death. We’ve often said to ourselves that if, by some miracle, we were to have a second life, we’d like to spend it together.” “Hai appena compiuto ottantadue anni. Sei sempre bella, elegante e desiderabile. __ André Gorz - “Letter to D: A Love Story” __ André Gorz committed suicide along with his wife Dorine, afflicted by a serious degenerative disease, on 22 September 2007. A Q&A with cover designer M. S. Corley
Last July we brought book production in house. As part of that, we knew that we needed to hire and work with the best editors and designers around. Over the next few months we’ll be introducing you to some of these amazing people. We want to kick that set of introductions off today with Mike S. Corley.
Tumblr media
Mike is known for his powerful, evocative covers. He’s done work for bestselling authors like Hugh Howey and Paolo Bacigalupi, and he’s worked on everything from novels to comic books to concept art for videogames. He’s designed covers for some of the biggest publishers, like Simon & Schuster, Houghton Mifflin, and Random House.
Currently, he’s designing Matt Harry’s Sorcery for Beginners (publishing this October from Inkshares with the official cover reveal on Wednesday). He’s also the mastermind behind the gorgeous covers for other Inkshares titles like A God in the Shed and Rune of the Apprentice.
Mike recently spoke with us about reinventing Harry Potter covers, the pleasures of reading Murakami in the summertime, and his thoughts on what makes a great book cover.
Mike, we’ve heard you have a really interesting story about how you broke into the business. Can you tell the Inkshares community a bit about it?
Back in 2008, I was working at a merchandising agency and wasn’t really enjoying the work I was doing. It was easy and comfortable but not very fulfilling. So one night after work when I would normally work on my own personal projects, I was thinking about what I would do if I could have any art job. I’ve always been a bibliophile, so I figured if I could do anything, it would be designing book covers.
There was a trend at the time of redesigning things in old-fashioned, minimalist art styles. People were doing movies as books and videogames as books and posting them on the internet. So I thought, well I don’t wanna just copy them and try to make more movies or video game covers: why not just do books as books, go back and apply the same design aesthetic?
The first ones I tried my hand at were the Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. I worked it out in the old Penguin Marber Grid style of covers they had in the 60s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I worked on Harry Potter next and started posting the covers online. I struck a chord with a lot of folks on the internet when I put my HP covers up and things escalated quickly with those covers specifically. I was going to make prints because there was a huge demand at the time, but then Warner Bros. lawyers came flying outta nowhere and shut me down quick. It was surreal that I would be contacted by a HP lawyer saying, “you can’t make this art and sell it” as they slowly cracked their knuckles into the phone quite menacingly. So of course I stopped any progress on producing those covers. Luckily they were already out in the wild and about a week later I got my first cover job from someone who saw them and wanted me to do something similar for them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From then on I got about one book cover request a month for the rest of the year and it slowly increased. I would do my normal job during the day and work on covers at night when the jobs came in.  In 2009 I quit my corporate job and went full time on covers because the timing seemed to be right, and I was young and stupid enough to take the risk without much damage to my current life. I figured I’d give it a go for a couple of months and if it didn’t work I could always go back to a design firm and get a “grown up” job again. Luckily that never happened.
Wow, that’s a hell of a story. You should publish that as a book on Inkshares, and we’ll make the cover. Kidding. What were your favorite books of 2016? And which books are currently on your nightstand?
I read a lot less last year than I would have liked, but a few standouts for me were:
Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage by Haruki Murakami. I have a tradition to read a couple of his books every summer during the months of May-August.This year my Murakami summer read will be 1Q84. He is the best. Makes me feel super melancholy and nostalgic for things I don’t even know.
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. I love the Frankenstein monster and the old Universal monster movies in particular, but I’ve never read the original novel, so I made that a goal for last year. I read an oversized version illustrated by Bernie Wrightson which really added to the story.
The Valancourt Book of Christmas Ghost Stories from Valancourt Books. I love reading ghost-story collections around Christmas time. There is something fantastic about sitting by the fire, drinking some Winter Cheer (look it up) on a cold winter night. I’ve read so many collections it seems that everyone just repeats the same ‘greatest hits’ in the ghost-story genre, but this book was all new to me.
On my nightstand I currently have The Vile Village, Book 7 in the Series of Unfortunate Events. I started re-reading them in January because of the new Netflix show coming out. I wanted a refresher, and they still are fantastic. I also just started The Pilgrim's Progress. I’ve read abridged versions before, but this is the first time I’ll read the original text which I’m looking forward to.
What was your favorite cover of last year? No choosing your own covers!
Hah, I wouldn’t choose my own covers. I’m one of those artists that never enjoys looking at work after it’s done, I’ve seen how the sausage got made so I’ve no interest in ogling at it beyond the creation itself.
I don’t know the designer off hand but one cover I really enjoyed was I Am for You by Mieko Ouchi. Beautiful and simple. I love images that are one thing at quick glance and then on closer inspection they reveal another.
Another would be Onibi, a French graphic novel by Atelier Sento. I really love the art style and the book, which I own but can’t read because I don’t know French beyond fries.
If you could live a day in the life of a character from any book who would it be?
Thomas Carnacki from William Hope Hodgson’s short stories on the character. He is the epitome of what I would like to do as a life job (besides art) and just has the perfect amount of confidence and scaredy-pants-ness as a guy I can relate the most to, who can still be cool.
What is your favorite part of the job? What’s the hardest?
Getting paid! Har har. No my favorite part is doing the concepts. I read pitches then I go through a little routine of prepping for a new book. I’ll gather some reference images that feel like a style I think matches the book, and I go for a run or have a long shower (that’s where my ideas come to me for whatever reason). Then I sit down for a day or a few and just work out every angle I can take the book with a number of concepts until I either think I hit the right one, run out of ideas, or run out of time. Sometimes I get art blocks during the concept phase and mope to my wife about how I’m a terrible designer and maybe I used up all my ideas on the last book. Then I’ll start the process over, run more, shower more, a literal rinse and repeat.
You forgot the “lather” part! What was the most challenging book you’ve ever worked on? What made it challenging?
There was this one indie-author book that I got a few years into doing freelance. They found me because of the Harry Potter covers. They detailed the book idea they had, even had a rough sketch and said “just make this in your style,” so I made just that in my style. They said “this is good, but was it too good?” They asked if I could make it look worse, of course not that specifically but very nearly. I went through round after round breaking it down till it was literally (not figuratively) their sketch in the end, and then they weren’t happy and said “okay how about you do it the way you’d like it.” And then I put my hands up in the air and said I’m probably not the right guy for the job. That was a playful retelling and this was drawn out over many months. It was very surreal, sad, and frustrating. It’s over though, so I can look back and laugh a bit about it.
*cries softly*
It felt a bit like McSweeney’s “Client Feedback on the Creation of the Earth.”
In your opinion, what makes a great book cover? Are there rules that for you across genre?
I don’t think that can be pinned down in words exactly. It’s very easy to see a terrible book cover and point out why it’s bad. Wrong font, bad images, weird layout, etc. But often a good cover, for me at least, is more of just a gut feeling. You know it when you see it, and you can try to break down why this part works or that part works but sometimes it doesn’t make sense at all. Sometimes rules are broken that shouldn’t be broken in design and it just works. Sometimes it’s how the title plays with the images. Sometimes it’s just the colors, or just the images. Sometimes it’s just great because art is relative and you think it’s a great cover when it actually isn’t...
I see a lot of publishers point to other comp covers out there and say “That cover is great, make that cover, but not..” and I can do the exact same thing that we see on the referenced cover but it won’t work for this other book for various reasons. Sometimes things just work with one book and don’t with another.
So for me, I have a certain taste in covers, and I realize my likes on art in general don’t match everyone’s tastes, but if I can be paired up with people where we mesh, then we are able to create great things. Or maybe they’re not! Depends on who’s looking at it.
Unless it’s our mothers looking at it, then of course it’s great.
You’ve had a lot of success, but you’re still young. Who are your favorite covers designers from the older generation?
Oh gosh, I don’t even have an answer there. The older generation? I may only be in my 30s, but I feel like the old generation already. Often times, and criminally, I don’t know who most cover designers are. It isn’t prominently posted anywhere especially with books from the olden days. There are lots of vintage books I own with just beautiful hardcover designs and I haven’t a clue who created them. Things are changing a bit now which is good, with social media artists are posting their own covers and often even publishers will link to the artist so it’s becoming a lot more known who did what. But I don’t have any good names to give. Saul Bass?
What was your favorite cover as a child?
Calvin and Hobbes collection covers. Those were the best.
If you could go back in time and design any book’s cover, what would it be and what would it look like?
I would love love love to go back and design the Harry P—just kidding. I would actually love to have been able to design the Lemony Snicket series. I’m not sure I could have done better than the original covers— Brett Helquist’s art is Lemony in my mind. But that series means so much to me and changed my view on books as a whole in a lot of ways, so getting to design them if only to take part in that series in a more concrete form than just being a fan would have really buttered my bread.
