hi please don’t feel bad about being really direct with service workers about your allergies because it is in fact your life in their hands (even if the allergy at this point isn’t life threatening you don’t know when it will be). it’s also ok to lie a little bit and say something like “hey. I have a life threatening allergy to *xyz*. I need you to clean *xyz* throughly or else I may die. thank you”. anyway one time I went to get a drink and specifically requested NO ALMONDS !! because I am very allergic to almonds. and it has a tendency to throw off my entire system if not just try to flat out kill me. I got my drink and as the barista handed it to me she went “you asked for almond milk right 🥰?” and I’m like. ok this person is likely very overworked and tired. this is a mistake. so I went “no actually I am very allergic to almonds this drink will. likely try to kill me as I said before. thank you.” so she remade it. and I watched her remake it. IN THE SAME BLENDER WITHOUT WASHING IT? and I was like. ok this is. weird. this isn’t right. I’m hallucinating this right. so she gave me my now almond contaminated drink and I drove away and DRANK IT because I had convinced myself I actually straight up hallucinated the contamination but then 30 minutes later on the dot (delayed reaction <3) half my face went numb and I almost passed out in a Whole Foods and knocked over a display if not for quick allergy med timing. the end. 👍

Oh YIKES. That sounds like a REALLY bad experience!!! I’m glad you were okay!!! And you’re probably right. I’ve worked in food service and I’ve never felt inconvenienced or angry when someone had an allergy request. I just feel bad making them take time out of their day to accommodate me, but again, you are right. It IS my life…..

I feel like everyone at the workshop was waiting for me to get an allergic reaction 😂 Yesterday I noted the back of my hands were itchy, by night a rash had spread. The day before we were cutting the extra bits of fabric off the painted Guqin, so my hands were touching the paint the entire time (the paint was dry enough to not smear on my hands so I didn't think to use gloves, but I guess it hadn't completely dried through).

I guess we'll see how bad it gets. They say it's not as bad when the weather is cold compared to the summer, so I'm hoping it doesn't spread too far. The other students one gets itchy in her elbows and knees, and her neck, the other gets swollen hands and face 😰 Everyone kind of commiserates when someone gets an allergic reaction, lollll 🤣

I looked up what Google suggests for lacquer allergy and the first big cure is "avoid contact" 😂😂😂 I did grab some cortisone cream though, for if it gets really bad (the teacher and other students say if you don't need to, don't use meds because if you use meds it won't allow your immune system to build up a resistance).

I feel like some of these traditional crafts would never be invented today if they hadn't been started so long ago because the process for them don't fit what we consider 'acceptable working conditions'. Today ppl would be like omg, nope, rashes all over? That violates every health and safety code, get a hazmat suit, masks, gloves, ventilator, you need buildings with 10 windows and 1 industrial fan circulating 24/7 for every person working. And then one person would pierce a glove, get an allergy, sue the workshop, and they'd go bankrupt 😱

But since it's a traditional craft everyone's like, "yeah, congrats on your allergy, tough it out, your immune system will either save you or kill you, we'll see 😁😁👍👍"

How to Make Guqin

Posting some of the steps to making a Guqin here. These aren't all the steps, but just a few that I've learned since arriving at the workshop :D

The teacher asked me today if I preferred making or playing the Guqin and I must say...playing is a lot less taxing physically xDD Between the carving, shaving, sanding, painting + lacquer allergy risk this entire process is quite demanding on the body. With this job you def don't need a gym membership xD

Carving The Guqin is hollow between the top and bottom board so we need to carve out all the wood in the centre. If you purchase a factory-made Guqin, this would be done mostly by machine and then some details done by hand. Here, it's 90% by hand.

Inside the Guqin When carving out the Guqin, we leave 2 slight bumps at the front and back, called the "Nayin/纳音" (sound absorber). This is so when the sound is vibrating through the centre it has something to bounce off of, otherwise it would sound too hollow.

A factory-made Guqin would leave two rectangular nayin since that's easier for the machine, here we carve it down into a gradual hill (pic 2, 3). Sometimes the Guqin maker can also play around with this to give the instrument a more unique sound, like pics 2 and 3 where my teacher decided to not complete carve the bottom flat and instead in this ripple-like pattern, and also do a U shaped nayin rather than just a little bump.

When putting on the first layer of paint, we also wrap the Guqin in fabric to prevent the wood from cracking in the future.

Guqin paint in a workshop like this is lacquer (生漆 or 大漆), mixed with powder deer antler (鹿角霜). In a factory it would be chemical paint.

Most people experience some form of allergy to lacquer (Google says it's kind of similar to poison ivy allergy), you get rashes and small bumps on your skin all over your body (even if you don't touch the lacquer). My roommates are both having reactions these past few days, so far I've had a mild reaction around my ankles. As I mentioned in a previous post, there's no medication to completely cure or stop the reaction, you just need to "tough it out" until you build an immunity (and even then you'll still have a reaction but just very mild).

Lacquer starts off white or light beige, then oxidizes as soon as it meets oxygen. Within a few hours it becomes pitch black and then slowly dries over a few days (the hotter and damper the weather the faster it dries).

If you get lacquer on anything (including skin) you need some type of oil to remove it. The most effective is kerosene (blue jug). So essentially our work rooms are a big fire hazard with kerosene oil everywhere as we wipe it off our cloths, hands, tables, floor, etc.

Mixing some glue paste for the first layer of paint (this is to help the fabric adhere to the Guqin).

We put one layer of the paint+glue paste on the Guqin, then put the fabric on top, and slather on another layer of the paint+glue paste making sure it's thick enough to hide the fabric pattern.

Then we leave it to dry (pic 3). You can see even as we worked the paint darkened from light beige/brown to a dark, dark brown. By the next day it'll become fully black.

So much work goes into making one of these instruments. So many variables can influence the sound of a Guqin, including size, shape, thickness and density of the wood, type of wood, age of wood, shape and size of the nayin, height of the bridge, type of string, etc. A master Guqin maker needs to take all of these into consideration in order to make one instrument that has a beautiful sound.

To make a full Guqin, we need at least 1.5 years, possibly longer. My arms ache, my legs ache, my back aches, my fingers are sore, my ankles itch (my fellow students said one of their fingers swelled so much their phone screen didn't recognize his touch, and last summer his bumps got infected and they had to take him to the hospital), I've got scrapes and cuts all over my hands, just after 2 weeks of working here xDD

Yeah my brother’s peanut allergy is so bad, that the doctor said it was literally off the charts. Being in the same room as a peanut could very well kill him, and people usually don’t care

I have a mint allergy myself, which is super inconvenient because what’s something everyone loooooves to have in a classroom? Mint gum.

In sixth grade everyday, the boy sitting next to me (let’s call him Joe) has mint gum. Every. Time. So my anti-social and terrified little self would go up to my teacher and explain to her that I couldn’t be around mint and I was starting to feel sick, so she had Joe spit his gum out. This happened a couple times before one day she said to me, “Now that’s not very fair to Joe is it?”

Like WOMAN that’s not very fair to ME. I have a serious health problem and you’d rather me have an allergic reaction than tell people not to chew gum around me?????

But augh, that teacher grinds my nerves. This last summer my dad and I were working (I install flooring during summers) and had to remove the carpet in her classroom.

She remembered me, but I don’t think she remembered forcing me to have an allergic reaction.

Now you might ask, “JJ, just go to the front office and explain to them?”

Hahahah! No. Our school had the most awful administration and would’ve (and in other situations) said the exact same thing as her.

In the end all was okay because I got a severe concussion and had to do the rest of the school year at home 👍

I wasn’t going to derail the disability pride month post for people with peanut allergies but in relation to that topic

I have never seen another allergy that has been so viscerally hated and mocked by people working in education like nut allergies. I’ve seen fellow teachers cringe that their classroom was the “nut free” classroom that year. Support staff that are trained and willfully don’t follow cross contamination protocol in the lunchroom because it’s too “tedious” or “time-consuming”. Full preschools + childcare centers that refuse to accommodate nut allergies. Schools where the only free lunch is a PB&J. Before/after school programs and summer programs whose food curriculum has nuts and doesn’t provide an alternative activity.

Allergy discrimination is so so insidious and prevalent. It’s happening behind their back and it is everything from the exposure joke to possibly causing someone to go into anaphylaxis from willful ignorance.

Also other parents in the classroom are guilty too. The “not my child not my problem” brain rot means that those lunchboxes are like bombs for airborne exposure allergies

I've like the worst allergies (cause of how annoying but also dumbly threathening they are) ever

Let me elaborate because i love talking about this useless thing to anyone and everyone

I sneeze at everything. By everything i mean perfume, leaves, car exhaust, smoke, food smell, smell of paper, dust, pollen, eggplants somehow, soda, grass, FUCKING GRASS

And sneezing is not the only thing that happens. Once sneezing starts it is already too late. You get tingles in the back of your throat and in your nose. Your eyes begin to water and your salvia acts like there is a delicious dish in front but nope it's literal detergent scent. Your nose begins filling up and you need to blow it and blow it and blow it or it'll build up as phelgm and make you unable to breathe veryyyy fucking quickly. I have been hospitalized like 3 times just because of phelgm like that. It's not very fun not getting oxygen. Trying to breathe and gasping for air but you can't get any when so much if it is around you. You choke on air and on your tears. Wouldn't recommend 👍

Now you may ask why am I rambling about all this. Well it's spring and they are starting to ramp up again. These allergies never go away but now they are at their full power. I have been carrying my inhaler with me everywhere. People assume it's for asthma but not just people with asthma carry it, people such as i who have allergies due to airborne particles and people with breathing issues use it as well.

So many of my classmates have been asking me whether it's for showing off or maybe it's a vape. And i guess i am tired of explaining if that makes sense. I fiddle with it on my hands yes and carry it everywhere and don't hide it but that doesn't give you the right to just come and ask if it's a vape and whether or not you can take a blow out of it.

Well i guess in conclusion don't be rude to people with inhalers and allergies. Don't bombard them with mean words because they have been sniffling their nose trying to make a small gap to breathe through. It is spring again and so many people like myself are just tired and sneezing and sniffling and it is so much. I know allergies are common place and pretty much everyone gets them especially in spring but not everyone's is in the same degree. Mine is severe and so are some other people's. So please show understanding and be kind. And please someone find a way to kill and destroy these allergies or i might just lose my mind entirely

For those asking, I'm making the cake(s) for my niece's birthday this weekend because I guess Auntie Joy's gluten-free cupcakes just hit different. (In case anyone wants it, I use King Arthur gluten-free yellow cake recipe; the only things I do differently is ignore the cake enhander (makes it stodgy imo) and whip the eggs and fold them in so it's fluffier, which gives it a more angel food cake consistency. (Also, if you're low histamine like me, use vanilla powder instead of liquid extract. No alcohol = lower chance of histamine reactions 👍))

My idea is to decorate the cupcakes with strawberry whipped cream topped with fresh fruit (niece LOVES fruit and whipped cream).

I'm making whipped cream using a seedless strawberry puree as a lower histamine alternative to pink stuff in a can, which, while delicious, will absolutely murder Auntie Joy and also several others in the family due to various food allergies.

We'll see how this goes.

I'm actually in enough pain from standing that I finally caved about ten minutes ago and ordered myself a counter-height barstool so I can sit safely and do stuff because all the chairs we have right now force me to reach up while in the kitchen (I am short) and that's killing my back as much as standing and doing stuff is.

So, yeah, thank you again to the people who donated to my Kofi over the weekend so I could afford a body braid (already ordered!!!). I had a little bit left over, so I combined it with a Wayfair gift card to buy something that'll hopefully increase my accessibility in the kitchen and lower my pain. It's something I've been wanting to do since 2020 but kept telling myself it was a needless expense and I could just persevere/physical therapy would help enough that I wouldn't need it anymore.

Yeah, that didn't work out 😅 so anyway, thank you for allowing me to accommodate my disabilities relatively guilt-free. It'll be nice to do stuff in the kitchen with less pain. And I'm super excited for my body braid to arrive. Anything that'll help keep my wayward joints where they belong is a good thing.

Okay, I am attempting to be upright in the kitchen so I can practice something for my niece's birthday. Wish me luck.
