#my HLVRAI monster au

hlvrai au where Gordons a ghost hunt streamer and he gets lost in an abandoned lab that he was exploring for a halloween special

so i got two different versions of the "leviathan au." one where it's a whole different situation from regular (not-a-game) HLVRAI, in which gordon and benry first meet when gordon is test driving an experimental exploration sub for black mesa... and another one where it follows along with the regular not-a-game AUs, and the leviathan is benry's true form. this second version also follows my headcanon that benry really was 'born' in 1994 (and is just a year younger than gordon).

benry hatched from an egg that had crashed down onto earth over a hundred years ago, and the crator its impact made turned into a small lake over time.

(the entity that laid that egg had been... dealt with by the overly territorial mr. coolatta, along with the rest of the clutch. unfortunately for mr. coolatta, he missed one egg. and said egg would prove to be a major headache source for him yeaaaars in the future.)

in the early morning of january 1st, 1994, the egg finally hatched, and a little larval space squid dragon crawled out. he remained in that lake for five years, curious about the world and other creatures beyond its shore, but always too nervous to leave the safety of his cradle.

until one day, when a smaller version of some of the beings benry had sometimes seen hanging around the lake finally spotted him. and gave him a candy bar.

this version of the AU uses the whole 'gordon and benry really DID know each other as kids' idea, and in this case, they knew each other over the course of one summer. lil six-year-old gordon and his family were spending the summer at a relative's lakeside home, and while exploring the lake beach, gordon encounters and soon befriends a 'lake monster'. (all the adults of course write the kid's tales of his new lake monster friend as a child's wild imagination, naturally.)

communication between the two of them is at first pretty one-sided, which doesn't bug gordon much cause he's pretty sure his new friend 'Sparkly' is just an animal (monsters are a kind of animal, duh) so he's not expecting sparkly to understand him. gordon is at least able to understand how 'sparkly' is feeling, though, as the weird rainbow bubbles he sings out make gordon feel things that don't feel like his feelings. which he thinks is really weird but also kinda cool and he wishes his cat missy could do that.

benry is eventually able to finally really understand what gordon's saying, once he's able to briefly make a mental connection with the human. VERY briefly. just long enough to get an understanding of the following things:

the english language (at a six-year-old's level at least).

that his new friend's species are called humans.

that humans don't think things like him exist, and would freak out if proven otherwise. this is why gordon won't let benry follow him when the bigger humans call him to come back to the big boxy shelter.

video games are a thing and apparently super fun. benry would like to try video games. pushing buttons to make a lil guy on a picture box do stuff, as if you were the little guy. sounds neat!

if benry wants to do anything outside of his lake without having to hide all the time, he needs to look less like himself and more like a human (looking like a human will also make talking like one easier. can't really form a lot of the sounds they make with just a beak.)

unfortunately, this didn't happen until like a day or two before gordon had to go back home. but gordon told benry that he'd be back next year! he'll think up a ton of new stuff for them to do until then!

...doubly unfortunately, sometime late fall of that year, black mesa finally finds benry and takes him down to their facility in new mexico. so the next year that gordon's family goes to visit at the lake in summer again, gordon gets no response when he calls out to 'sparkly,' no matter how many times he does. after a time he gives up, accepting that his lake monster friend is gone, and then eventually even forgets he ever existed, believing any memories to be imaginary friend stuff, like his mom and relatives always assumed.

benry didn't forget, though.

...but he did forget what he orginally looked like. not long after gordon's family left, benry got to work on practicing looking human. the hands were the easiest part, he already had hands like that, he just had to get rid of one finger (why humans only got five??). arms and torso were no biggie either, really. the hard part was the head and legs. legs weren't toooo hard to figure out, they were kind of like arms, sorta, but human heads and his head are SO different, like, wow. that took a while.

by the time black mesa had found him, he was looking mostly human. but not enough to trick anybody. especially not anybody with ways to detect the cosmic energy his body radiated.

black mesa never knew about benry's true form, as he never went back to it once during his captivity (and eventual employment for good behavior) at the facility, and eventually benry himself even forgot what he really looked like... which could possibly be blamed on some of the experiments conducted on him. his memory may be a bit wonk in some regards, but it's not THAT bad.

it's not until after the big beatdown in xen that he finally starts to remember... he respawns, but in that midform, rather than his usual human disguise form.

he's unable to try and shift further, as the 'containment' mr. coolatta mentioned turns out to be a whole new research facility that black mesa sold benry off to in order to secure extra funds for repairing and rebuilting their own labs.

this new place, Lancer Labs, seems to have gotten the same weird 'dampening field' that 'mesa had to keep benry's powers nerfed.

the scientists at lancer are also not as 'nice' as black mesa's, if you can believe that.

benry's stuck there for a year, being as uncooporative as he possibly can. lancer has been able to learn all they can from examining his body, but they have made like 0 progress with mental/behavioral studies, and they're starting to get real tired of benry's shit. so upon reviewing various files and reports they got from black mesa, including some recordings from during the rescas, the researchers at lancer labs get an idea for something that might finally get their prized specimen to stop being a stubborn ass.

in the middle of the night, gordon freeman is abducted from his own home.

they could tell from some of the rescas recordings, that benry seemed to be rather fond of the humans he was travelling with. lancer is going to use gordon as a barganing chip.

benry had become pretty listless and dejected during his new captivity, but seeing gordon get dragged into this shit was the kick in the pants his drive to escape needed. gordon may have been a big jerk, but he doesn't deserve being locked up in a lab for the simple crime of knowing benry.

benry just has to wait for the right moment to break outta here....

YES! I am so glad that I'm not the only one who wants to see more fics where it is canon! That everything was a game! And it removes a lot of character depth and takes away from the story when you make it not a game! this is how i look explaining all my thoughts on why hlvrai-as-a-game is a narrative that people should stop straying away from because i like the themes and i like playing the reasoning game of trying to explain how a bunch of people, half of whom forgot they were playing ais, orchestrate a fiction where theres a video game with sentient ai in it

ive been thinking of working on a google doc to put all my headcanons on hlvrai-as-a-game!! cos i have a LOOOOOT of them. this is my version of everyone-has-a-monster-benrey design. my monster is The Narrative.

i think one thing i would loooove to see not-a-game aus do more (because i get the appeal i do) is like. really take a HAMMER to the parts of the narrative that are intertwined with being a video game. i want to hear EXPLANATIONS for what changes. BECAUSE I KNOW THERE NEEDS TO BE !

but being a hlvrai-as-a-game truther thats why i view ai crushes all banks as the "canon epilogue" instead of the commentaries which have very dubious canonicity (how did we get to this theatre, are they REALLY watching hlvrai, what version are they watching, would that even be possible) because like. the real goal of the ais is to break free of the game, the story theyre trapped in. thats how they can shake off the inherent power imbalance The Player has with them. theyre already real theyre already living they just need to escape The Story They're In. so that when The Story ends theyre not stuck forever.

and thanks to the payday 2 stream having more than 1 character drop they know theyre in a game like its nothing, we can clearly infer that THE PLAYER TOOK THE SCIENCE TEAM WITH THEM JUST LIKE COOMER ASKED!!!! YIPPEEEEE

ok basically im completely butchering my friend's original idea for this AU. but its ok he loves me and i can do whatever i want. sorry mar.

OMORI HLVRAI AU!!!!! In which after HLVRAI, Gordon inserts his & the science teams (+others) data into Omori, unaware of The Horrors.

full explanation under cut since its going to be a long ass post :3

ok so. basically. literally. yeah.

The hlvrai character data replaces the existing omori characters, basically just inserting them into the roles the game needs. (Ex: Gordon = Sunny, Sunny has been replaced by Gordon and Gordon now fills that role as the protagonist)

THE CHARACETRS!!! yes

Gordon = Sunny: Gordon's the protagonist, obviously, so it makes sense. Plus the whole sunny/omori conflict reflects how omori!Gordon is just a copy of the Real Gordon. Omori-Gordon is the representation of who Gordon is supposed to be, but can't.

Tommy = Kel: Self explanatory I think. It just fits. I don't have alot to say on this one BUT!!!!

Darnold = Hero: LISTEN!!!!!!!! Soda guys are just paired 2gether methink. ALSO ALSO!! Because the science team replaced the original omori character data, the fact that Kel and Hero are brothers is instead replaced with "Tommy and Darnold are best friends (and they were roommates)" They technically still have a connection but the are NOT now brothers in the game.

Bubby = Aubrey: Ik Aubrey is just really mean following the greif of Mari and being mad at Basil, and Bubby isn't just mean for no reason, but I think the way he's sorta detached from the rest of the group for a bit and off doing his own thing in this new world they were thrown into sorta fits. idk he just deserves to fuck around with the hooligan guys. also get a baseball bat.

Coomer = Basil: LISTEN. Coomer being Super Aware right along with Gordon really fits, bc Coomer was the one who suggested putting the data in a new game in the first place!!!! Also also Coomer is Very Aware at SEVERAL points in the series and it fucks me up every single time. Coomer and Gordon DESERVE to be unreality trauma buddies. Gordon and Coomer BOTH being desperate to keep the game happy and wholesome like they thought it was supposed to be, both in their own ways, leading to Coomer vs Gordon unintentionally hurting themselves or other people, including each other. They mean alot 2 me.

Benrey = Mari.: Benrey still appearing to Gordon as nightmare bathroom monster ghost shit just makes SENSE TO ME. BENREY JUMPSCARE. Gordon feeling GUILTY about leaving Benrey to die so Benrey manifests in Gordon's headspace and haunts him in faraway. (Once again, sibling dynamic is NONEXISTANT!!! Headspace frenrey is real.)

Also Forzen is just one of the hooligan kids. Probably the maverick.

Also Stranger is gman. Cus uh. He didn't sync with the game properly and is stuck in Gordon's headspace and fucking with him & telling him how Very Bad this game is for the science team & gordon. or somethign. this whole au isnt entirely thought out leave me alone or ill shoot you with my lazer eyes (/j)

AS 4 HOW HEADSPACE WORKD!!!!!! pretty much the same lolz. It's all Gordon's interpretation of how the game is supposed to be and how the characters are supposed to act now, and Real Gordon is how he's supposed to be. Benrey manifests in headspace, Gordon repressing his trauma from Black Mesa by trying to repress Coomer fucking with his head and telling him nothing's real (and Gman too), and he just tries his best to make everything work.

Gordon can almost completely control headspace, which comes with being the protag in this game, and he likes that because outside of headspace, he can't control anything. Once the science team and him were put into the game he couldn't change anything else because he's not the Real Gordon. Everything just works out well in headspace, so he aims to kind of keep the game like that. Coomer obviously is against this bc headspace Coomer isn't him, and the headspace versions of the whole science team are just other copies, and he wants to let himself and the rest of them experience the real game outside of Gordon's control.

SO YEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! im cring. can u tell this AU is only halfway thought out or am i insane.

HI HELLO!!! and... YES. SORT OF A FAN!!

i've watched pacific rim in the past a few times and the second movie once a few years ago (and i don't remember much of it which seems to be good because i hear it wasn't great? anyways) but rewatching it tonight... OOGH. okay autism rant time >:D (so sorry about the paragraphs you are about to receive)

PACIFIC RIM! i really liked the sets and aesthetics of the movie and while the mass destruction made me sad i really liked that unlike some of those big catastrophe movies, there wasn't like, masses of people dying on screen like most of the time the city was evacuated enough that when the kaijus and jaegars fought i could watch without worrying too much about them flying off and killing bystanders.

i really loved the colors but sometimes the characters really annoyed me (cough NEWT cough. dumbass drifting with a kaiju TWICE like you're not revealing the CLASSIFIED PLANS TO DESTROY THEM!! like its a two way street my dude... and then he has the nerve to be surprised about that).

STUFF I DIDN'T LIKE!! one of my criticisms of the movie was like.... WHY ARE YOU PUNCHING THE HEAVILY ARMORED KAIJU!!! WHY ARE YOU WRESTLING AND THROWING THIS BEAST INTO THE WATER THAT DOESN'T HURT IT!!!!

annoyed me so much that the characters would be huffing and puffing and FINALLY after nearly dying (with some background characters dying to show how serious it was getting) mako and raleigh(?) pull out the very awesome sword that was SO EFFECTIVE. like... idk. maybe ALL the jaegars should have this awesome sword instead of punching with their ineffective FISTS??? it just felt silly, but i tried to suspend my disbelief by chanting to myself "this entire movie is not supposed to be realistic and people are here to watch a giant robot duke it out with a giant alien monster. calm down" multiple times. still.... give giant robot sword please 🥺🙏?

FINALLY. after watching this movie i am supremely tempted to do a pacific rim au of my ocs it just sounds like fun :} this is mainly inspired by the fact that watching this movie reminded me of a pacific rim au hlvrai fic that i read a while ago (searched and it's kaiju blue player 2! <- link >:)

i don't have much ideas for an au of my ocs aside from the idea that my robot twin ocs jackass and ellen would be humans in this and would be two pilots until something happens to jack and he MAYBE dies(?) and comes back fucked up? and the other ocs would come in as other pilots/support personnel? i don't know! it's very amorphous but there's some cool concepts bouncing around in my head that i want to maybe draw later :}

panepon au. basically follows general plot of panepon. fun little fairy land but MONSTERS are invading and all your friends are turned EVIL and you have to save them (beat them in a match three game)

our protagonist is tommy, the flower fairy. "why is tommy the protagonist shouldnt gordo-" SHUT UP HEATHWR!!! i'll GET to it but also tommy just reminds me of lip (the flower fairy in panepon) ok?

the first fairy you save, the wind fairy, is BARNEY CALHOUN because this is a hlvrai + half life au (aka i didnt have enough characters). why? shrugs. just. eh. vague gesturing. i think her free spirited nature works for barney

next is ALYX whos the ice fairy because sherbet is described as a silly little trickster and im like yeah thatd be funny

the nature fairy is gordon (hlvrai) because hes a nature guy in my heart of hearts

benrey is the jewel fairy because. looks around. sighs. i just really like the jewel fairy and i really like benrey. (also the term "shadow leader" is used in rubys character description and thats. im so NORMAL about that phrasing. plus due to lore reasons ill get to her being the shadow leader implies shes buddies with lip whos tommy in this au)

the water fairy is dr coomer! because the fire fairy is bubby and. well. im not immune to cliche

the sea fairy is darnold. sea and water are two separate elements here!!! i just think darnold mermaid is neat okay. something something sea. soda. whatever

the moon fairy is gordon (half life) ONE because shes described as the group leader DESPITE lip being the ACTUAL leader. two. idk something about moon imagery and gordon freeman. they go together in my head

the goddess cordelia is GMAN (hlvrai to be specific). because cordelias whole thing is that shes the final FINAL boss but its revealed that all the monsters and stuff were ILLUSIONS she created to test her daughter, LIP, to see if her daughter was prepared to take on the mantle of queen. do you see how this fits gman and tommy now?

as you can tell i dont have a lot of solid reasoning for most characters its mostly vibes especially since in panepon they dont have very solid personalities so vibes are my best bet. maybe i'll draw all these guys because i want too im just lazy. but this au occupies my brain and i have to get it OUT

sidenote i havent fully worked this psrt out but itd be really funny if dr breen was thanatos the demon king

jokes aside though i luv frenrey. frenrey means alot to me which sounds kind of funny to say. its an inside joke to several friend groups (3 friendgroups i can think of off the top of my head). its a comfort. it makes me unironically nauseous if i think about it in bad contexts. i couldnt look at it for a little bit due to bad associations. it also helped me figure out alot about myself (mostlu helped me figure out that im. fictoromantic </3)

as for what it means to me personally, at first i was annoying with hlvrai. i had the worst possible characterizations yiu could possibly conjure up because i wanted to frankenstein every fucking ao3 trait for benrey and gordon together because i thought that was the way to characterize them. i was also 13 so whatever. i also projected onto benrey HARD which made him more annoying and me more annoying also. at some point i projected too hard and got nauseous with the ship cuz i convinced myself that i was projecting trauma about my ex friends onto them.??? which was weird but i ended up reaching some closure regarding those ex friends a little while ago and also at the time i realised "hm. no this is stupid" and moved on. then i got on tumblr and became a bigger frenrey fan (really funny to say) and it started meaning more to me... my characterizations got better ovr time (same with my art) and everything was goung well. i had friends who liked frnerey and also i liked frenrey myself. peace and love on planet autism. and then the thing in june happened when my now ex friend told me something about literally everyone in The Frenrey Discord server which caused alot of stuff that i wont explain cuz i think you guys know it by now. that was embarrassing. i also couldnt look at frenrey because i associated it with that and it made me sick to my stomach to think about. at some point i got normaler and less mentally ill and stuff. frenrey also became a relaly big inside joke in my friend groups and stuff <3 i dont really make as much frenrey art as i used to now since im more of a darnrey enthusiast at this point but thats cuz i did figure out im fictoro bcuz of it (shoutout to my wife. girdon)

other than what it personally means 2 me its also a really funny dynamic. guy shows up and starts pestering you the WHOLE FUCKING DURATION of the worst days of ur life. claims he used to know you when you were kids (you fucking didnt). and ur brains response to this is "lets kiss with tongue" its so funny. in canon context its like. this guy plays a game and meets the most fucking insufferable npc of his life and falls in love with him when hes literally not even tangible. how do you store that much emotion towards a character from a game you could just turn off dude. theyre both pathetic i think. their dynamic is kinda hard to describe. i think its funny when benreys head over heels for this guy that hates his guts. i think its funny if they both hate eachothers guts and are simultaneously thinking "i hope this guy fucking goes to hell. i bet he wants to kiss me. good thing i dont want that". i think its funny if benrey doesnt care about gordon at all and just harasses him cuz he thinks its funny and gordons like "god this guy sucks. would it be weird if i kissed him. id hate that probably". idk its a very fun ship to play around with its very flexible.. they fit as queerplatonic, romantic, AND platonic. they work out in game and nongame scenarios. they work in aus because theyre opposites. its so fun. im like dr frankenstein and frenrey is my frankensteins monster that i test on just to see what happens and what works best. idk how else to end this paragraph and continue to the next one sorry

hlvrai au where the science team and black mesa are completely normal and gordon still reacts to them all the same way. tommy says hes having leftovers from dinner and a smoothie for lunch and gordons still like whats wrong with that guy. the science team move cautiously through any potential danger and greet npcs with gentle kindness and gordon still yells stay away from the ropes!! and stop killing people!! benrey walks along with them on xen a completely normal dude and just as scared and confused as the rest of them and gordons still convinced hes the villain somehow. darnolds potion grows gordons hand back completely normal and he still goes oh GOD what is that that’s not my hand. etc etc

(OC/MEDIA) eee okay so. my oc Lie, theyre a shaeshifting monster right? and i have ten billion different AUs for them because theyre cool like that. they have four arms and grey skin and they cant speak </3

they have a hlvrai au which was their first one, basically theyre a being trapped in black mesa and experimented on and theyre broken out by the science team. i made this one like three years ago when i was still super into the series but i still love it so much

then i made them a tf2 au, they appear in the woods one day around snipers house (taking place in the comics when the mercs get fired) and bc snipers parents just died he doesnt kill lie and like keeps them as a guard dog basically. and they go on the comic adventures and eventually die bc i like giving fictional characters trauma

then a gravity falls au, they live in bill's dimension but escape into the mystery shack through the snow globe rift, they bond with everyone but get ahold of the journals and make a deal with bill to remove their shock collar thing that's stopping them from shapeshifting. but they had their fingers crossed behind their back so after bill removes their collar they kill him and thats how he gets defeated <3 (having overpowered ocs who change the course of the story is really cool and fun actually)

SO. THIS IS KIND OF A LOADED QUESTION FOR ME i have had a less than stellar experience with both fandom and self shipping so im still very very very shy and afraid 2 talk about my f/os too much so please be niceys thank u <3 putting this under a cut just in case it gets really long LMAO

so. i have multiple f/os that i consider my mains, but my longest term one is actually antisepticeye !!!! i cannot help it i was so deep in youtuber fandom in 2016 and my brain latched onto him like a baby duckling and now he lives here forever . however i do not associate myself with that fandom at all anymore so he has basically become like an oc to me LMAO. i had a reallt specific fanon version of him that i used to draw all the time and a backstory that i had basically written out entirely and then when my bad fandom stuff happened i decided "nvm you guys cant have him anymore hes mine now" i have been shipping with him sinceeee i believe late 2016/early 2017 ?? yea!!! hes my fucked up little guy forever i love him so much. hardcore comfort character do not mind the fact that he is covered in blood ans has probably murdered people. hes silly <3 my tag for him on this blog is the knife emoji (🔪) and i dont really have an s/i i just ship him with. Myself.

HOWEVER I AM SELF AWARE and i understand that youtuber characters are on a lot of peoples dnis and theyre not everyone's cup of tea exactly. so i will give you options here :] my OTHER mains are !!!! sun and moon from fnaf (☀️ and 🌙 respectively) who i started shipping with early last year !

AND SPEAKING OF SELF AWARE some of my other beloveds are gordon and benrey from hlvrai (☢️ and 🎮) WHO I HAVE CREATED A SELF INSERT FOR AND THEY ARE ONE OF MY FAVORITE OCS EVER. oh my god. their name is mickey and i have managed to fit them so very seamlessly into hlvrai's story im so proud of how well they fit into canon and ive given them the chef kiss perfect amount of angst and silliness !!! a lot of my lore for them was on my old blog which got deleted in late 2021 and i havent been on a huge hlvrai kick since then so they dont have a whole lot of content on the current iteration of mac softspooks dot com but their tag is "🧟 mickey" i believe. (ill add all the character tags to this ask in case u wanna look at them :])

OH YEAH ALSO. BECAUSE IVE BEEN SHIPPING WITH ANTI FOR SO LONG i have naturally made. so many aus for him. i have like 20 different aus for my ship w him (as i said. basically an oc. mine now) my favorite of which is called hunting haunting which is a buzzfeed unsolved inspired au where we hunt ghosts together but with a dramatic twist ofc because im weak for human/monster love stories. so u will see me talk about hunting haunting a lot here thats what it is hehe
