Ghost stories!

So since @killjoy-loveit and @fangirlingandprocrastinating wanted to hear the ghost stories/experiences I have had... I will eggsplain the ones I can remember! I will start with the small quick ones first and go to the most intense one last.

1.) When my momma and I finally got our own house, which was very difficult since she was a single mother at the time, (owning your own house as a single mother at the time was unheard of), it was haunted when we moved in, but the ghosts didn’t seem to mind us! We would always hear loud cracks and footsteps in the attic at night, see lights that came from nowhere in the hallway, stuff like that, but they never tried to scare us. We kind of just lived in the same space together. When we moved out, our roommate still stayed until he had to get kicked out, and he said once we left, the activity got REALLY loud and bad all of the time. He said he thinks that they didn’t like that we left. I still feel sad about that.

2.) One time I brought home a little colored electric disco ball from an antique store, and brought home a little ghost girl with it. She was kind of a sad energy, honestly. I felt her around often. One time my mom asked me to get something out of my bedroom, in the middle of the day, keep in mind. So I went to my bedroom and the moment I walked through the door, there was a little sigh RIGHT in my left ear. I froze, then turned around and sprinted back to my mom in panic. I felt bad for reacting that way so I went back to my room immediately after and apologized for my reaction, and asked her not to do things like that because I startle easily. She didn’t after that. We couldn’t get her to move on, so I eventually got rid of the disco ball.

3.) We used to live in a house that people said had a “portal” in it. If you know what that is, it’s basically a portal to the “other side”, which means there is A LOT of activity in the house, ghosts constantly coming and going, and not always GOOD ones. The house was so dark, light really didn’t get into it. It was weird. When I was in the bath (I was only like 10) I always felt something watching me from the connecting door to the master bedroom of the guy who owned the house. (He was never there.) One time my mom and I had a huge fight and went to bed angry. I woke up in the middle of the night and there was a HUGE spider web connecting from wall to wall inches in front of my face, with a regular sized spider in the middle. Keep in mind, I have aracnophobia, and at the time, the lights in the room were off, it was PITCH BLACK, but I could see every detail of that web and spider as if the lights were on. I ducked underneath it and ran to my mom crying. She came in and turned on the light and nothing was there. In the same house at a different time, I also saw a daddy long leg spin down from a web directly in front of my face as I was following mom through the garage door. Daddy long legs cannot produce silk or web. So that was literally impossible. And when mom heard me yell and came back, it wasn’t there anymore. That house was a fucking nightmare lmao

4.) This one is the most intense one, as far as I can remember. A client we used to work for had a beach house. She let us stay there during the summer for free and we brought some friends most times. It was a really old beach house, and the children’s room had a bunk bed and cool toys. It also had a ouija board on the wall that nobody wanted to touch. Also when you opened the little toy closet, it felt like something awful was rushing out and straight through you. The very first time we used the beach house, I slept in the top bunk of the kids room. I woke up in the middle of the night frozen in fear, and I had no idea why. I looked out the window and there was a HUGE ball of solid light (no it wasn’t the moon, there was a building next to us blocking off the entire view of the sky) and it just... FELT... listen this part is personal and I don’t want to share it in front of all of my followers so I will keep it to myself, but anyways it felt like it was telling me to get out of the room RIGHT NOW. Like there was an urgency to it. So I literally jumped off the top bunk and hit the floor and ran to my mom.

After that, we went into the room and said we won’t come into that space anymore and to please leave us be. Every time we stayed after that, I slept on the fold out couch in front of the windows facing the sea. I liked it much better. But unfortunately, One time we were there, my mom brought her friend, and her friend brought her whole damn family, so her daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend slept in the bunk beds, where we promised not to go. The next morning I was sitting on the couch playing my ps2 while everyone else was eating breakfast, because I am an antisocial little shit, and all of the sudden everyone started yelling and then began to rush out of the house. Mom grabbed me and dragged me out too. Later she told me they were talking about the ghosts in the house. The girl and her boyfriend didn’t believe in ghosts, and the boy was mocking them. Saying “If there is really ghosts in this house why don’t they prove it” and immediately after that, he felt a huge scratch on his back, and they pulled his shirt up and there was a huge red handprint. Since then, my mom didn’t let us go back to the house because she said we “stirred something up and angered them” and she didn’t want to risk going back. A lot of little things happened in that house. Mom said when she woke up to use the restroom some nights, leading up to that incident, she’d hear the sound of a bouncing ball in the hallways, as if a kid was playing in it. She said she knew something was getting stirred up since then, because it was more activity then we were used to. 

The daughter went around the house as we were packing and took pictures of the house, and when she developed them there were orbs huddled together in a lot of the pictures, with one big orb off to the side by itself. My mom said the big one was probably what I saw in the room that night and that it was probably warning me to get out before the others ones hurt me. I was very thankful for that.

Anyways I know a lot of people don’t believe in ghosts and probably think I am crazy, but we can all agree to disagree and have different opinions. I am Ryan and you can be Shane.

5.) My mom and I had a cat named Princess a long time back. I had her since I was about two years old, and she passed when I was 18. she came everywhere with us (we moved a lot) so she was a huge part of my life. I still have pictures of her hanging up on my whiteboard calander. Anyways, when we go through hard times, my mom and I can feel a tickle on our lower legs like a cat tail brushing against us, for a few days in a row, and we can feel when we are almost asleep at night, something jump up on the bed and lay by our feet. It lasts for a few days and then goes away when I assume she thinks we will be okay without her. I miss her so, so much. I am very thankful for her still being here when we miss her or feel guilty that we couldn’t give her the best life she deserved. One day when I am finally able to get another pet, I hope she helps me find the one that’s meant for me.

So he takes a deep breath and turns in his seat so he’s facing you more directly and takes the handout from that lesson and explains the whole thing. It kind of seems like he’s getting pissed at your ??? Faces but you don’t say anything because your grades are too important lol

So you and your filterless mouth decided to say the first thing that pops in your head and go “Kim Doyoung do you like me?” and he fucking snAPS like his eyes widen and he takes 3 steps back

He has the dumbest face like ‘pshh no where’d you get that idea from?’ 

And you smirk you are sOoooooo smug right now because it all cLICKS NOW

He made a joke saying “do you like me or something” because he wanted to see if you would be up for it and kinda gauge how you feel about him

So you’re like “oh my god Kim Doyoung has a crush on the dumb obnoxious girl who sits in front of him”

And he reddens and quietly says ‘no’ because he wants to deny it but bITCH ITS TOO LATE YOU CAUGHT ON

So u smirk (for the 17th time) and say “we shall see, Kim Doyoung”

And you leave and he’s like scARED SHITLESS BC HE HAS N O IDEA WTF YOU’RE GONNA DO

Y’all roll up to class the next day all chill, neither of you say anything but he’s watching youuuuu and you’re very aware of it so you’re thinking hmm maybe I’ll tease him a little it’d be fun so you go up to ask the teacher a question and as you’re walking back, everyone’s got their head down working uno, you wink at him cheekily and it sends him fucking wiLD like he jumps in his seat and the person sitting next to him is like bro you good???

So he just has to play it off like oh yeah I just thought I saw a spider

Meidbddhsid you love playing with kdy bc you’RE in control now

You maKE the library thing happen again (basically you just willingly sit next to him) because you wanna see him flustered again like when you winked because it’s funny but like,, also,, kinda cute? Shdidbdj Maybe you kinda like him too?? Shut up no you dONT (u totally do)

The ppl who sit closest to you guys in class have kinda noticed this weird energy where y’all don’t speak but you make a lOT of eye contact so they might perhaps bring it up Doyoung and he’s like “whAT no I just- she’s annoying so I- And the lesson- the, Yeah.” 

They just ignore him like fuck it whatever it’s his life

After that class he decides to confront you because he’s a little tired of being teased so he pulls you out of the corridor and into another one after class

He says ‘hey look, yes I like you, I think you’re cute and smart and funny and you might not like me back but I need some kind of answer I’ve been waiting for a while for some kind of answer you know’ 

Suddenly you feel kinda bad for teasing him for such a long time so you go ‘ugh Kim Doyoung you big dope I might kinda maybe like u too? But idk yet? Plus you know school is really important and idk if either of us have time for a relationship…’ and he nods ‘yeah I understand and you’re right actually, wanna walk to the bus stop together?’ 

So you do that but you’re both mainly silent, it’s kinda awkward

Next day you take the seat next to him in the library and maybe just maybe your hands touch a little and you end up going to the library together like everyday almost like a study date

You guys don’t speak you just work together quietly next to each other

And then perhaps get some food after

3. Kokichi was interested in Shuichi at first because he was a detective and he wanted to see if he can see through his lies, but then got attached to him because "he couldn't figure him out".

4. Kokichi was probably amused by how nice he was to him (by actually approaching him and hanging out with him) compared to the others.

5. In chapter 2 Shuichi woke up to find Kokichi above him, saying that he's glad he's finally awake (makes me wonder if he got worried when Gonta came in with an unconscious Shuichi, and if he stayed by his side the whole time).

6. At multiple points in the game, Shuichi actually comments on how innocent Kokichi looks compared to his words, saying he can't get mad at him because he looks like he means no malice, then says "but that might just be another lie..."

7. During the free time events, Kokichi literally plays 100 rounds of Rock Paper Scissors with Shuichi because he wants to show him that he actually does not want him to die or to hurt him in general.

8. And probably because he genuinely has fun hanging out with him, even if it means playing the same game 100 times and getting the same result on purpose (and Shuichi did not stop either!)

9. The freaking fact that he hurt himself on purpose to lose and let Shuichi "win".

10. THE FREAKIN FACT SHUICHI IMMEDIATELY GOT WORRIED AND WENT TO TEND HIM FRANTICALLY.

11. The fact Kokichi was laughing "like he was having the time of his life" (as Shuichi said) the whole time Shuichi was taking care of him.

12. "I stole your heart so now I'm satisfied!"

13. The persona freakin vibes, the detective Conan freakin vibes. THE PHANTOM THIEF AU.

14. THEIR FREAKING DYNAMIC.

15. The fact that Kokichi's free time events were one big scheme to make Shuichi think about him.

16. When Kaede hung out with Kokichi, she got pissed in the end and the FTE ended with a warning from Kokichi. But with Shuichi, it ended with such a heartwarming note because Shuichi was patient with him and actually cared for him and worried about him.

17. Kokichi called Kaede and Rantaro his beloved once in chapter 1 after they were dead, but called Shuichi his beloved from chapter 2 onwards in front of him.

18. PROBABLY TO MAKE SURE THAT SHUICHI NEVER REALISES THAT HE MEANS IT CAUSE HE WILL THINK EVERYTHING HE SAYS IS A LIE.

19. Shuichi is the only one, and I repeat the only one who thinks twice about Kokichi's lies. And I quote him saying multiple times "he's lying about lying..."

20. Whenever Kokichi has evidence the one he always reaches out to is Shuichi. During trials and investigations.

21. Shuichi is onto him during the trials and acknowledges how much of a help he is. One time he said "maybe I should thank him later" but then backtracked.

22. In chapter 4 Kokichi referred to Shuichi with the phrase "Suki ni natta hito" "the person I fell in love with" while alone. and it's not even a bonus scene or event, the line is 100% canon and the player will come across it no matter what.

23.The👏angst👏starts👏in👏chapter👏four👏where👏kokichi👏decides👏to👏cut👏his👏ties👏with👏everyone👏including👏his👏beloved👏

24. But how does he do that? By trash talking the hell out of Shuichi's best friend in front of him, because he knows what pisses Shuichi off. Kokichi is not stupid, if he truly wanted Shuichi to trust him he wouldn't trash talk his friend. A part of him must have wanted Shuichi to be his ally, but it wasn’t possible after he told him to stop hanging around Kaito.

25.  His clinginess in chapter 4 was probably him trying to make use of the time he has left with Shuichi before it all crashes down. That’s why he talked to him after the murder has happened. He realized he didn’t want Shuichi questioning his actions.

26.  His worried face when he said he would cry if something happened to his Saihara chan.

27. The fact that their relationship wouldn’t be so pure because of the love hotel-

28. Kokichi was constantly worried about Kaito influencing Shuichi negatively and tried to drop him hints multiple times that sometimes believing in each other and working together might get them all killed.

29. The fact Kokichi freaking called Shuichi the Japanese sweet "Shumai" just like Kaito calls Maki "Harumaki" IS REALLY HECKIN ADORABLE AND VALID.

30. It just seems like they are both very interested in each other. Like they are each other's puzzle. They want to know more about each other.

31. And honestly, their relationship is just so very cute.

32. Kokichi's interest in Shuichi, says a lot about him.

33. And let's talk about something... Kokichi has always been treated like shit in the killing game by his friends. No one trusted him, everyone turned on him when Rantaro accused him of wanting to play the killing game because he suggested not doing the death road of despair. And he took all the blame to stop Kaede from basically torturing everyone by forcing them to try again and again. And he always brushed it off whenever they said anything mean to him. So why do you think he had such a strong reaction (for someone like Kokichi) when Shuichi said "you're alone and you always will be"?

34. Kokichi had planned to make Shuichi hate him cause he was planning to impersonate the mastermind, he needed to cut his ties with everyone. So when he did so with Shuichi, and with his best friend and probably the only person he can trust in the killing game getting killed. It became too much for him so he booked it out. Ah the angst.

35. Later in the game, Shuichi calls Kokichi his friend. And want do friends do? Stay by each other's side.

36. And then the salmon team ending comes along and wraps it all by making the ending theme "staying by each other's side"

37. "you want to know more about me right? Then you should stay by my side." "Kokichi's right... I want to know more about him."

38. In the ending of the FTE's Shuichi says "I reach out my hand to Kokichi, but he doesn't take it" but then at the end of the salmon team ending he says "I reach out and grasp the hand reached out to me"

39. "Kokichi can lie about a lot of things, but he can't lie about the warmth of his hand."

45. And the game makes it pretty clear that he saw HIS beloved, by all the connections between stuff he said in the hotel and stuff he said out of the hotel.

46. In chapter 3 if you decide to talk to Kokichi before checking in on Kaito, There is a really interesting conversation between them. Kokichi saying he would rather have Kaede come back to life because it would make Shuichi happy.

47. He also says that he loves Shuichi and is always thinking about him, but then he says its a lie. But the funny thing is, in the love hotel he actually says the exact same thing- and he has no control over the love hotel, everything there is g e n u i n e.

48. Kokichi's love hotel scene had the most voiced lines, I wonder why? 👀

49. Kokichi literally pushed Shuichi onto a bed, in a freaking love hotel.

50. "that means, you can do anything you want to me, and that's the truth"

51. The thing that makes Kokichi's love hotel the most interesting isn't only because he literally was with the person he was in love with, but it's also because it is implied that Kokichi is playing Shuichi's ideal instead.

56. Shuichi was the one to clear Kokichi's name from ultimate despair.

57. He seemed really interested in what was going through Kokichi's head the entire game.

58. The fact that Kokichi helped Shuichi so much, with literally ending the game even after he's dead.

60. Their interactions in the drv3 comic anthology are really freaking precious.

61. They feel valid but not forced at the same time. Just showing that they get along really well, without any repetition.

62. The fact that the comic anthology confirmed that Shuichi tries to calm Kokichi down whenever he's fake crying even though he knows it's fake...

63. It reminds me of how in the game he stated multiple times "maybe I should make sure he's alright"

64. And that one section that focused on Shuichi and Kokichi, where Shuichi was trying to use a lie detector that Miu made to know when Kokichi is lying.

65. Kokichi let him use it on him for a while until Shuichi asked about the organization to get information XD

66. That just shows again how Shuichi is interested in Kokichi and his organization and wants to figure him out. The same way Kokichi finds him tricky and wants to figure HIM out.

67. They look really good together! The height difference for example! Its legit perfect, not too much and not too low.

68.  Kokichi wearing mostly white while Shuichi wears mostly black. and that’s a bit interesting cause normally white is given to represent the pure and helpful characters while black is normally given to represent the dark “evil” characters. but here Kokichi who is trusted by no one and paints himself as the bad guy is wearing white, and Shuichi who everyone blindly believes in and trust is wearing black, makes you think, doesn’t it?

Their characters are meant to parallel each other with the truth and lies theme, and the game makes that very clear to the player. but sometimes they step in each others territory, where Shuichi has to lie at least once in every trial to progress, and Kokichi hiding a lot of truths in his lies to make everyone confused and not trust him. to me this dynamic between them is very interesting.

71. The fanfictions and fanart are adorable fight me, some people can write their relationship so freakin well? What are you people???? Gods?? Because it sure seems like it.

72. It has the right amount of angst and fluff for a ship, it has everything I've wanted in a ship, I love it.

84. THEIR JP VOICES GO ALONG REALLY WELL TOGETHER WTF. I’ve also come to appreciate how Kokichi has the deeper voice in jp with Shuichi with the feminine lighter voice. but it’s the opposite in English.

85. It's kinda funny how Shuichi keeps trying to figure him out while Kokichi just keeps flirting with him 😂 probably making him even more confused.

86. To Kokichi who could predict everything, Shuichi's unpredictability fascinated him to the point he fell in love with him.

87. Unlike everyone, Shuichi is patient with Kokichi, but not too patient. He is the exact person Kokichi needs.

94. this is completely personal but I started off the game being confused about the ship, and became a hardcore supporter by the end of it. Which means its a heckin good ship if you ask me.

95. Pretty sure Shuichi is one of the only reasons for Kokichi to genuinely smile in a killing game.

96. This ship can make me cry from sadness because of the sad videos, or from happiness from fluffy fanfictions and fanart.

97. Kokichi is completely in love and is enamored by Shuichi it hurts. His love for Shuichi is valid, so freaking valid, 100% valid, more valid than my existence.

98. I love the bonus interactions between them hidden throughout the chapters, like the one where Kokichi tells Shuichi that everything he does is for everyone. It seems that he is only honest with Shuichi, but of course hides it as a lie.

99. Kokichi wanted Shuichi to join his organization, and called him interesting multiple times. Which is really important coming from someone like Kokichi who wasn't fond of most of the people in the killing game. 

100. Their relationship is very realistic, it is focused on how two characters try their best to understand each other, how even someone like Kokichi can come to trust in someone and want someone to trust in him, how he wants that someone to be able to understand him. Kokichi went from being interested in Shuichi to falling in love with him (literally referring to him as the person he fell in love with, using the same phrase that Maki says to Kaito later on), in a freaking killing game. he forced himself to cut their ties and died thinking the only person he cared about hated him. while Shuichi started off interested but wary of Kokichi, tried reaching out to him but failed due to Kokichi pushing him away, to getting mad from him for making Gonta a murderer and trash talking Kaito when he seemed in a really bad condition (after getting punched by Kokichi too) to hitting cold hard realization to what Kokichi has been trying to do the whole game after his death. and then appreciating his help, using the clues he left behind for him, clearing his name, calling him a friend, and grieving his death with the rest of his friends who died in the killing game. He then uses everything Kokichi gave to him and taught him, ends up understanding Kokichi and his lies, and uses the tactic he taught him where he said “sometimes you win a game by not playing it” to end danganronpa. then you’re left wondering how things could’ve been different if Shuichi didn’t already have so much on his back and tried harder to reach out to Kokichi. you start wondering what could’ve happened if Kokichi didn’t push him away, you start thinking about all these possibilities. and then salmon team comes along and wraps everything up with a ribbon. putting direct throwbacks to what happened in the killing game and the free time events, Kokichi BEING the one to reach out to Shuichi, asking him to stay by his side. Their relationship is like one huge arc that starts the moment they met to their graduation in salmon team, and it leaves you with the fact that after they graduate they will stay together and learn more about each other, just like both of them wanted but couldn’t do in the killing game. if this isn’t a beautiful realistic relationship, I don’t know what is. Honestly, everything about this ship is so very beautiful, and I will support it with my life.

I love microbiology but it is a difficult class and is made even more difficult when you have a bad prof. I started this post after I took an introduction to microbiology class but waited to finish it until I completed an upper year microbiology class this past semester. This way I can also provide insight and tips on what will help you not only in the class but also how to make sure you are prepared for upper year classes.

Topics you may cover in your intro microbio class:

History of microbiology

Microbial taxonomy (naming and classification)

Microscopy and specimen preparation

Prokaryotic cell structure and function

Microbial nutrition and growth

Control of microorganisms by chemical and physical agents

Microbial metabolism (including energy, enzymes, regulation, chemosynthesis, photosynthesis, and biosynthesis)

Microbial genetics (including replication, mutation,  gene expression, gene regulation, recombination, plasmids, etc.)

Virology

Immunology

And areas of/related to microbiology you may explore in upper classes may include: environmental microbiology, food and industrial microbiology, immunology, medical microbiology, molecular genetics, prokaryotic physiology, virology, and more!

Tip #1: Understand new material at the end of every week

Microbiology is a content heavy course. Even if you’re busy with other classes and responsibilities, do a thorough review of new content you’ve learned over the past week. Give yourself time to get help/go to office hours in case you don’t understand a concept (you can’t do this if you leave studying till the last minute).

Tip #2: Know the names of important microorganisms

This all depends on your prof. I had an insane prof who wanted us to know the names of every single microbe he mentioned in passing, but this shouldn’t be the case for everyone. The prof for my upper level microbiology class provided bonus marks if we could state the specific genus of a microorganism in any of our examples on the final exam. If you can, talk to students who have taken the class before for more insight.

Regardless, make sure you know the species, genus, etc. of microbes that your prof spent a significant amount of time talking about or ones that come up more than once.

Tip #3: Pay attention when you’re learning about metabolism

I say this for two reasons: (1) Metabolism is a difficult topic to understand and (2) It will benefit you to have a good understanding of metabolism now. Metabolism covers a wide range of ideas and concepts -- having a good understanding will help you in upper level bio/biochem classes and will help you link ideas together.

Tip #4: Study the material in different ways

Revise your notes in a variety of ways. I prefer to type my notes and write them out after class. Typing allows me to get all the info down, I can insert diagrams from lecture slides as I go, and leaves me with a detailed study guide to use when I’m studying for finals (I also add material from the textbook not covered in lectures to my typed notes after class). Writing out my notes afterwards reinforces the material, allows me to shorten my notes to the important stuff (e.g. I only draw necessary diagrams), and allows me to reorganize the material (e.g. make acronyms, put the info into a table, compare and contrast 2 concepts like cellular respiration and photosynthesis).

You can also use other methods to study such as flashcards, mind maps, read the material out loud, etc. Only use a method if it actually works for you -- for example, lots of people use flashcards to study but I rarely use them.

Another really good way to study is to make a practice test or at least think about how your prof will test certain concepts. This is a really helpful strategy for preparing for multiple choice and written questions.

Tip #5: Study with friends

This also ties into the idea of thoroughly learning new material at the end of every week. Plan a weekly study session or talk to your friends and hold each other accountable for staying on top of things.

I usually just met with one or two of my friends before each midterm. We would find a room with a whiteboard and spend an entire afternoon going over our notes together. I had other friends who would meet at least once a week and review the past week’s material together.

Tip #6: Draw it out

I personally love using whiteboards to study and would definitely recommend buying your own. If you don’t have one though, find an empty classroom with a whiteboard or just draw it out on a blank page. Don’t draw out every diagram you have available to you -- find the most useful ones! I like to draw out a process and then write down the description of the process side by side.

I also like to combine diagrams that I find useful. Drawing diagrams also works if you’re trying to compare and contrast processes. Having all the info laid out in one place can help you see what is truly similar or different, rather than trying to memorize the processes as separate things.

For example, I had a few different diagrams for photosynthesis in my notes. Instead of studying them separately I combined them together so I had all the info in one place.

Tip #7: Utilize all the resources available to you

Ask questions! Go to office hours! Most profs are happy to help meeting with them one-on-one really ensures you are getting a good understanding.

You can also ask your lab TA for clarification on concepts, because often the content you cover in labs is tied to content covered in lectures. My TA heard us all complaining about how our prof did not properly explain a difficult concept. So, she did a quick search and found the name of a youtube channel she remembered learning from in her undergrad.

As well, if the textbook for your class proves to be useful then actually use it! I like to read over the textbook chapter before class because then I can focus on understanding the fine details during lecture. (I’ve also compiled some online useful books and online resources at the bottom of this post for you to check out.)

Advice specifically for labs:

Use aseptic technique! Wash your hands, work close to the flame, etc. If you’re not sure about something, wait and ask your TA. And try not to spill anything. Someone in my lab spilled a tube of E.coli broth on their lab notebook which then had to be autoclaved, which meant they had to buy a new notebook.

DON’T FORGET TO FLAME THE LOOP!!

Even though you’ll be working in partners make sure you can do everything on your own. It might be easier to have your partner hold a piece of equipment while you do something else but it won’t help you when you’re doing the same work alone during a lab exam or as a research assistant.

Make sure you can do a Gram stain properly. If you can’t do a proper Gram stain consistently you can ask your TA if you can practice on a few slides or have them watch you do a Gram stain to correct any mistakes you’re making.

Be specific when answering questions. Your TA wants to make sure you know exactly what you’re doing. Also, write down the full name (species + genus) of the microorganism you’re working with the first time you mention it and then feel free to use the abbreviated form after (i.e. write down Escherichia coli first but refer to it as E.coli thereafter)

Listen and be safe. Your TA will probably stress safety a lot but make sure you pay attention if they tell you need to take certain precautions with certain microorganisms (especially where to dispose certain samples).

Have fun! My favourite memory of the lab was when we were looking at samples we had prepared from soil the week prior. Everyone was comparing the fungi that had grown in their petri dishes and trying to see who had the most “fuzzy” sample.

Plan your time well. Read through your prelab carefully and make note of tasks that may take up more time (waiting for molten agar to cool, waiting for a sample to dry so you can heat fix the slide, etc.).

Label everything! You really don’t want to forget which test tube contains which organism or which tube is which when performing a serial dilution

Tie in things you do in the lab to things you’ve learned in lectures. You’ll make lecture material more interesting and you might learn different applications of what you’re doing in the lab.

At the end of the lab: Dispose of your materials in the proper waste bins! Wipe down your lab bench! Wash your hands!

For online resources I will always recommend Khan Academy. I found they didn’t have everything I needed for this class specifically but the topics they did cover were explained well.

Wikipedia! I’ve had multiple profs this year tell me to use Wikipedia. Please don’t go citing Wikipedia in any of your lab reports (but you can look at their references at the bottom of page to find more info). Wikipedia is good for finding up to date information, especially for information related to microbial taxonomy.

"I'm telling you - the guy was a complete stranger, just walked up and gave me the bag” Peter told you, his ears ringing from your scream when you waked on him wearing the Spiderman suit. “You’re trying to tell me right now, that this” you said, gesturing to the suit, “isn’t the real thing, the suit, I’m sorry costume that has web shooters? Really, do I look that gullible?” You asked, putting Peter in a difficult position. See, if Peter said yes, he knew you would get offended and mad at him, not matter how playful it was, he didn’t want to see that. On the other hand, if he said no, that would be another lie he told you, and he knew you hated, no despised lies, the first lie being Peter not telling you he was Spiderman.

See, you’ve known Peter since you were kids. Through all the lows and ups in his and your lives, you both were there. When something happened, no matter how small or big it was, the other would be the first to know, even before your own parents. And being Spiderman was pretty big to say the least. And Peter had lied about it.

The thing with you and lies is from when you were 5 years old, you were told a lie by your dad. He said, “I’ll be fine, nothing major has happened, you will see me tomorrow and we will finish the book.” He had told you that as he was being loaded into an ambulance, because of some bad sickness. While you knew that you dad lied to you so you would be happy, and that he didn’t know he would die that night, you were still hurt. And even though you knew that was illogical, when you had found out the truth, you were mad, and you needed to be mad at someone, so you spent a year blaming your dad for his lie, as a way of mourning, no matter how mad it was. 

And Peter knew this, thats why he always tried to never lie to you, and if he had to, he would try his best to just tell you he couldn’t tell you or otherwise he would have to lie, and that would usually cover it. But when the topic of Spiderman came up during lunch, you asked Peter “hey, you know with your reporting, do you know who Spiderman is? Does he go here?” And poor Peter was stuck between keeping you safe or lying to you, which would still hurt you, it was a lose-lose situation. So he lied, hoping it would be better.

So again back to where you were right now with Peter, you were furious. You saw hesitation in Peter’s answer, and was so worried that he was going to lie to your face again, starting to lose trust in him. If you lost trust in Peter, there would be no one in the world who you would trust. But you sighed with relief when Peter told you “It’s not that I thought you were gullible, its just that I was hoping you wouldn’t know that I was Spiderman, I was hoping to mislead you from it” he looked down, sad as he admitted that he was trying to lie to you about something.

You looked at him, took a deep breath and walked out of his room, slamming the apartment door in his face as you left. You could hear Peter calling your name as you walked home.

Now you were the one at crossroads, you could be mad at Peter for lying and just cut it off there, and thats what you would have done to anybody, but this was Peter for gods sake, he knew your history and wouldn’t lie for no reason. You left because you knew that Peter had some reasoning, no matter how stupid, that told him that there were more pros then cons about lying to you about Spiderman. So you left, you left so you could get space and figure it out. You just hoped that this wouldn’t be the last couple hours of your friendship with Peter.

Coming home, you muttered hi to your mom, going into your room to make a list of pros and cons about you knowing about Spiderman on your whiteboard. You started at it, thinking about Peter. 

While you were doing that for the next couple hours, Peter was a mess. He knew that being a superhero was messy, and he knew that he had to do this for the greater good and for you, but it hurt to see you so mad over Peter trying to keep you safe. He could only hope that you would see it that way. And you did.

You did, because like 6 hours later, at like 3 in the morning, you had finished the list and took some steps back to look at everything. On the pro side, there were a couple things to say the least. It showed you that Peter didn’t want you getting attacked or hurt, even if it hurt him. Because looking at the con side, you saw the cons hurt him more than you. He couldn’t talk to anyone about it, because even if Ned knew already, you knew that he would try and ask a lot of questions, and you didn’t know if Peter was getting any additional support. Second of all, when he got hurt, and you knew he got hurt cause you had seen the Spiderman videos, he had to patch them up himself. The only con that really hurt you was the lie. And while it still hurt, you knew it was justified, and you weren’t 8 anymore, so you could live with that lie.

Looking at your clock and seeing that it was so late, you wondered if Peter was still up, and reached for your phone to look up Spiderman sightings. And sure enough, he was up and active. At least it wasn’t a school day tomorrow, well today.

Getting up, you snuck out, leaving a note for your mom just in case she woke up, so she didn’t freak out. Once that was taken care of, you ran to the latest sighting, barely running into him.

“Spiderman!” You yelled, getting his attention. He was alert, looking for the scream, worried about what danger was there, and got startled when he saw it was you. He thought that you would try and avoid him for the rest of your live, but by the looks of it, you weren’t plus, on an added bonus, it didn’t look like you were mad at him. 

He jumped down from the window ledge he was on, landing in front of you. “Y/N” he whispered, pulling you into a hug. You felt a little bad, because up close you saw that you had caused him to worry, but you needed the space so this situation wouldn’t escalate. He got ready to apologize to you, ready to explain himself, but you beat him to it, telling him “Look Peter” whispering his name, “I get why you lied to me about this, and while yeah it sucks that you lied to me, I understand why you did. Im not going to mad at you on one condition, you come to me to patch you up instead of doing it yourself or going to Ned, cause I know neither of you know first aid, and I actually do” you told him, adding the contain as you remembered the con on the white board, and you anyway wanted to become a doctor, so it was kinda fitting. 

“Y/N, I’m sososo sorr- Wait what” he told you, cutting himself off once he realized what you said. “You’re not mad at me? You understand, how? And its okay I can do the first aid myself. And how did you know about Ned???” He started bombarding you with questions. “Okay slow down miter”, you said, stopping him, “First of all, I'm not mad, and I understand cause I spent 6 hours working on a pro and con list, thats why I left. I was mad, but knew you lied for a reason so I wanted to figure it out before talking so our friendship wouldn’t end today in a screaming match. Third of all, NO WAY ARE YOU DOING FIRST AID. ARE YOU FORGETTING WHICH ONE OF US IS GOING TO BECOME A DOCTOR AND ACTUALLY KNOWS FIRST AID?? Idiot”, you said laughing at that, elbowing him before answering his last question, “I knew about Ned once you told me about Spiderman because I connected the dots of Ned doing a terrible job acting whenever Spiderman is mention, which my I add, he brings it up like 99% of the time, like??” You told him. 

You both just sighed, happy for the peaceful ending after a busy and eventful day. You looked around, realizing it was around 4 and you two were still in the middle of the street. “Peter”, you started, making him a little more alert as he was starting do dose of sleeping, “go to sleep, we can talk more once we both have slept for sometime. He started to argue, but so tired it just looked like he was mumbling gibberish while making weird sluggish hand motions. He sighed, giving up the fight as he was to tired, and left to go home, mumbling what seemed to say bye. You watched as he started going home, only to get slightly sidetracked helping what seemed to be an old lady crossing the street at 4 in the morning? Okay then. You laughed, smiling at how selfless and caring Peter was, before heading back to your house, as you were ready to fall asleep right there also. Peter was truly amazing.

Hello ! Do you think it can be considered canon that Ouma has something for Saihara ? And if so, do you think it was really relevant to the story to hint at that ? (That one sentence about him not letting go of someone he fancies in Chapter 4 literaly came out of nowhere and was never mentioned again, but I might have missed something) I personally kinda ship it but do wonder if it was really important to make it a thing.

I’ve answered a bunch of questions along this line ofthought before but yes, I would say Ouma’s feelings for Saihara are canon.There are a bunch of characters with canonically confirmed one-sided feelingsin the DR franchise, so I wouldn’t consider this anything new. If anything, itwas a pleasant surprise to see yet another canonically confirmed gay characterin the franchise, and so soon after Juzo, too (before ndrv3 came out, I was personallyworried it was going to be a long, long time before we got another explicitlygay character).

Ouma’s confession in Chapter 4 isn’t something I would say “cameout of nowhere,” particularly as there are plenty of indications in him takinga much greater interest in Saihara ever since the start of Chapter 2. I thinkin Chapter 1, it’s fair to say that he wasn’t particularly interested though—especiallybecause Saihara was still very much acting the part that Tsumugi had intendedfor him, by being scared of everything, “weaker than anyone,” to put it in herwords.

It is particularly worth noting though that pretty much assoon as Saihara takes his hat off in Chapter 2 and begins deliberately actingin a different way than what was “pre-written” for his character, Ouma startstaking a much bigger interest in him. The “my beloved Saihara-chan” commentsalso start as early as Chapter 2, and teasing or not, I would say it’s stillnoteworthy that he begins expecting a lot more from Saihara as a detective andas an individual both.

There’s also his behavior towards Saihara in Chapter 3,which is arguably one of the chapters where Ouma interacts the most withSaihara by virtue of not yet having begun his own villain routine. Withoutacting so openly hostile and antagonistic the way that he does in Chapter 4,his interactions with Saihara are considerably more playful and even thoughtful.

One of the scenes that’s caught my interest for a while nowis one in which Ouma mentions that he doesn’t actually want to resurrect Amamifor the “transfer student” motive. Surprised, Saihara asks why not, and after abrief pause, Ouma explicitly says that it’s “because he’s thinking of hisbeloved Saihara-chan.” He says he’s pretty sure Saihara would rather resurrectKaede if he had a choice, and that he would rather do what makes Saihara happy—afterwhich, of course, he playfully tacks on a “that’s a lie, though!” But sincethere was no reason for him to bring up that particular conversation in thefirst place, and since he was acting quite serious for most of thatconversation, I firmly believe he was telling the truth.

That little exchange isn’t one I see brought up a lot, but Ido think it’s an excellent glimpse at the way Ouma works, always letting littlesnippets of the truth show before passing it off as a lie because he knows thatno one will believe him anyway as long as he makes the credibility of his ownwords go down. It also highlights the fact that he’s an extremely caringperson, no matter how much he pretends otherwise. Since we know that it’s canonthat Ouma hated the killing game, and hated death and murder in general, it makessense then to think that he was thinking long and hard about the “transferstudent” motive and how getting a chance to meet and talk with the deceasedagain might actually be a chance to bring some closure.

There are also, of course, his FTEs and bonus mode contentas well. While the bonus mode isn’t canon, the FTEs are at least deeply tied toboth his character and the story, and to dismiss those as “not canon” feelssomewhat hasty to me. His FTEs are filled with a considerable amount offoreshadowing for the whole game, and help to shed some light on just why it isthat he starts finding Saihara so incredibly interesting starting from Chapter2 and culminating with their blowout in Chapter 4.

One of the highest possible compliments someone like Oumacan pay to anyone else is to call them “interesting,” or “not boring.” Thereare many indications that he may actually have had some kind of SHSL Analysis.His script in Chapter 5 (which he wrote literally in the span of about twohours) is so incredibly detailed and lengthy that it’s, in my opinion,unexplainable without him having some talent that would allow him to predicthis classmates to that degree—and the only talents we’ve seen along those linesare Junko’s and Kamukura’s. Looking at it from that perspective, it makes sensewhy Ouma brings up words like “boring” and “interesting” so much, as well aswhy he constantly seeks out things that are fun or catch his interest.

This is exactly what he does in his FTEs, especially withSaihara. His first two FTEs with Kaede involve him mostly offering to team upwith her, pissing her off, and her shooting him down. In short, neither of themreally feels like they’re on the same wavelength with each other, and while Ithink he did respect her judging by his final send-off to her in Chapter 1, Ithink her inability to realize that he was posing her a mystery also frustratedhim. In his second FTE with her, he even tells her point-blank that it’s “nothis problem” if she keeps rejecting his offer, and looks disappointed and boredwhen she rejects him for the final time.

By contrast, his FTEs with Saihara are marked withexclamations of surprise and comments about how “interesting” Saihara’sreactions are. Certain dialogue options (especially the more forward andassertive ones) have him remarking “Huuuh, that was completely different fromwhat I thought you’d say!”

Even the entire premise for his FTEs is basically achallenge to someone as weak and timid as Saihara: by posing a “threat” that he’llhave to kill Saihara after a certain number of FTEs now that he knows about his“secret, evil organization,” the easier solution would certainly be for Saiharato just avoid him and never finish those FTEs. So each continuation and eachnew FTE requires Saihara to step forward out of his comfort zone and seek himout if he wants to know anything more about him.

Those small steps of progress and those surprisingly orunexpected comments are basically rewarded with Ouma messing around and playinggames with him for a number of FTEs, finally culminating in the last FTE wherehe loses the knife game that he proposes on purpose, let’s Saihara bandage himup, and then dramatically exclaims that “Oh nooo, I lost so I guess that meansSaihara-chan wins!” Not only is there a lot of excellent Chapter 6foreshadowing (about games that can be won without being played), but there’salso plenty of reason to believe that Ouma really, genuinely did enjoy his timewith Saihara.

He says outright that since Saihara’s been thinking abouthim so much, always wondering why he said certain things or acted a certainway, Saihara’s “heart is full of him,” and “since he has Saihara-chan’s heart,he doesn’t need his life anymore.” This perfectly meshes with his behavior inChapter 4 and other parts of the game: Ouma was clearly curious about Saiharaand wanted to know more about him while also teasing and playing with him, buthe also didn’t want to let him in too closely or allow him to know anythingabout himself.

Basically, Saihara’s ability to act in unpredictable orsurprising ways was the thing that Ouma found the most interesting andappealing about him. It’s undeniably canon that Ouma couldn’t figure him out—notonly do his FTEs suggest it, but Chapter 6 confirms it, with the whiteboard inOuma’s room. Saihara’s picture is set aside from the rest of the group, withthe words “Can’t figure him out?” beneath it. So his whiteboard is yet anotherpiece of evidence backing up the fact that he had feelings for Saihara.

He had feelings, andI think those feelings were something that surprised even himself—whichprobably wasn’t a feeling he was accustomed to considering how much he wascapable of predicting other people’s behavior and various outcomes andscenarios. He was interested in Saihara, clearly, but he also couldn’t fully,100% trust him, or anyone else in the killing game for that matter.

His attempt to force Saihara into joining forces with him inChapter 4 was spurred on not only by his interest in him, which had beendeveloping over the last few chapters, but also the fact that Saihara was (fromhis perspective) the only one who had actually been doing anything productivefor the group, saving everyone constantly in all the trials. Saihara was farmore skilled as a detective than he wanted to admit to himself, due to his owninsecurities, and Ouma saw that and recognized it. But he was also far tooparanoid want to team up with anyone else,which is why he tried to make Saihara cut all ties with the rest of the group.He wanted to work with him, specifically, and no one else.

If you ask me whether I think it was important to the storyor necessary to make it a thing… well, in my opinion, yes, I think it was.Because Ouma’s own emotions, and Saihara’s ability to surprise him, are twothings that Ouma can never fully predict or take into account. And in Chapter 4both of those things come back around to surprise him and to make him finallyshut his mouth when he’s acting horribly in the Chapter 4 post-trial.

One of the most important things about Ouma’s character isthe fact that no matter how infallible he acted, and no matter how convincinghis villain routine was, he was ultimately very, very human at heart. Irecently wrote a post explaining his empathy, and while that empathy helps toset him apart from characters on a much colder, more analytical scale likeJunko and Kamukura, it also makes him vulnerable in a way that those charactersare not.

Unlike Junko and Kamukura, Ouma understands other people’sfeelings perfectly well, and doesn’t enjoy the thought of hurting them. Were hetruly as evil or chaotic as he pretended to be, I’m sure it wouldn’t have beena problem for him to kill any, if not all, of his classmates, moresoconsidering how many tools he had that they never even knew about until thelater chapters. But he never did. His conscience is one of his most redeemingqualities, but it was also a hindrance at times when he wanted to be cold andcalculating and unfeeling. Chapter 4 is the coldest he gets, and Ouma at hismost morally grey—but it’s incredibly telling that even though he has a perfectopportunity to let Maki and Momota both die in his place in Chapter 5, justlike he did with Miu and Gonta, he’s unable to actually do so again.

Then there’s Komaeda, who Ouma still gets compared to quitea lot despite being relatively dissimilar to him in terms of his mindset andactions both. But one of the most notable differences that sets them apart isKomaeda’s inexplicable luck. While it’s true that his luck cycles between thegood and the bad, it’s still a trait that’s more like a force of nature, and itstill makes Komaeda into a larger-than-life figure whose luck would alwayscarry him through his schemes and plans for factors that were outside of hiscontrol.

Ouma, by contrast, has nothing like that to swing things inhis favor. He’s smart—very, very smart, incredibly so. But he has no luck tosway things for him, and so he leaves almost nothing to chance. He calculatesand plans—but he’s unable to make the hard sacrifices that he wants to, whichis ultimately why he chooses to go to his own death willingly rather than keepon sacrificing others. His chessmaster act is ultimately just that: an act. The fact is that Ouma wasn’t aSupreme Leader of anything but a bunch of harmless, silly pranksters, and whilehis bluff was incredible, he was very, very human and vulnerable at his core.And even though he himself might’ve liked to think he was actually someinfallible, ruthless, strategic chessmaster, his own emotions did, I think,catch him off guard.

His confession scene with Saihara shows how even though hewas clearly able to recognize that he had feelings, he also wasn’t able tofully account for how his shitty behavior might be making Saihara feel. Hethought if he kept pushing, Saihara would have to come around and join himsooner or later, and that that they could team up without him fully putting histrust in Saihara or opening up to him. What he didn’t expect was for Saihara to get pissed at him, put his footdown, and call him out on being pathetic and lonely because his actions weredriving everyone else away.

Despite having a comeback to everyone else’s angry remarksin the Chapter 4 post-trial, Saihara’s comment is the only one that leaves himunable to respond. He tries, then goes silent and blank, then finally says he’sgotten bored and walks off. And I think it’s because Saihara’s comment was one of the only ones that genuinelygot through to him. I think he was surprised to realize that Saihara’s comment actuallyhurt, and that he was torn between his own feelings of guilt (both over what hedid to Miu and Gonta, as well as how he began acting towards the rest of thegroup) and his incessant need to keep playing the villain and carrying out hisplan to strike back at the ringleader.

There are all of these reasons, plus the fact that, as I’vediscussed in a lot of other pieces of meta, Ouma’s confession scene iscompletely unskippable. Unlike his FTEs or the bonus mode, it was shown in acompletely story-related, plot-relevant scene. Not only was Saihara himself notaround, but no other characters were at all, meaning that Ouma was completelyalone in that scene. Without anyone else to overhear him, I think it’s safe tosay that there was no reason for him to lie.

His wording was also explicitly romantic. The phrase “sukini natta hito” is used almost exclusively for romantic situations (includingmany love songs and shoujo manga), and is even the exact same phrase Maki usesto describe herself falling in love with Momota in the Chapter 5 post-trial. Itdoesn’t make much sense to me to call it a “hint” when it’s Ouma saying it, buttake it explicitly at face value when Maki says it. Considering how much “love”itself is an extremely important motivating factor for many of the charactersin ndrv3, I think it’s very intentional that there are all these one-sidedconfirmed feelings in the game which drive the characters to do what they do.

Anyway, this has gotten really long so I’ll leave it at thisfor now, but I hope this answered your question! It was really fun to write aresponse to; I love looking in-depth with Saihara and Ouma’s dynamic. Thank youfor stopping by!

Talking Tickets: November 1, 2019

1. AFL shuts down team operations, doesn’t know what’s next: I’ll refer you to a story written many years ago by my friend, Troy Kirby.

Not to pile on, but he highlighted a lot of these issues from the very start.

The reason I’m highlighting this story is that the AFL’s struggles highlight a scene that we can see in many places if we are paying attention: the need to improve the value proposition of the event, the marketing and selling of the events, and the business acumen of the tasked with doing these things.

  I’m a huge fan of the AFL. I still have an Arena Bowl t-shirt that I wear from time to time and I tried out for the Miami Hooters in my early-20s. But to just try and keep the league limping along without some definite changes in the value proposition offered, business model, and way that the game is marketed and sold would be prolonging the inevitable.

  To me, it is time for a few days with a whiteboard and a bunch of big questions like, “What do we want the league to become?” Because knowing the destination is going to be key to long-term success.

  2. The Golden State Warriors get into the broker game with their ‘StubHub for luxury boxes’: Innovation in the way that a team is serving its customers is a great thing! We need more innovation.

  In my reading of the situation, this is likely to work well for the Warriors in the short term, but I’m hesitant to offer it up as a meaningful solution to teams that aren’t moving into new buildings and have one of the hottest teams in the NBA.

  Why?

  I’ll give you two reasons:

  1. I spent a day in NYC with Tony Knopp and TicketManager at their annual event, chatting with suite holders and ticket buyers from corporate America. The big challenge that many organizations are dealing with isn’t access to tickets, but utility and proper usage.

  An exchange is great when there is truly high demand like there will be in SF this season.

  But when it comes to helping corporate buyers better use their tickets or your event, these kinds of things are just too easy for people to allow to become commodities and can become an excuse for poor selling and marketing habits around the premium and corporate selling space.

  2. The biggest challenge that sports teams are facing in regards to tickets is marketing. A platform like this sounds great, maybe works great, and probably only adds to the confusion of customers.

  Why?

  Well, you aren’t your market. And, all too often, decisions get made about selling or marketing to a customer or a customer base and we make the assumption that because we understand the buying process, everyone does.

  Again, this program seems like it could be confusing to potential customers if not handled properly.

  3. Nets strip fans of tickets over reselling: Lo and behold, the Nets are now hot and selling tickets so they are shutting down resale from fans and other ticket buyers?!

  I’m not surprised.

  For many years, depending on the fortunes of a team, they will be at the WTC and Ticket Summit in Las Vegas, proclaiming themselves, “broker friendly”. As soon as the tide turns and the team is on the upswing, broker relations seem to chill.

As my son would say, “True Fact!”

Why this story is interesting is because the article highlights the possibility that the Nets are working to protect their consolidation partner, Dynasty Sports and Entertainment.

Which would be really interesting because I don’t recall a single situation where a team went to bat to protect their relationship with a consolidator.

  So when you add up the ingredients of consolidation, protecting a partnership, a hot team, and a lawsuit that is built on the premise of protecting “…fans and free enterprise…”, this story bears watching because it will likely have some interesting stories that come out of it.

  4. Feds probe White Sox about comp tickets: If you’ve been around the ticket game for long enough, you’ll have heard tales about “ice” and turning clocks back 2-3 minutes, or paying kids to stand on line…the list goes on.

  Where there is a ticket, there is often the opportunity for some sort of sketchy behavior to take place.

  Tony Knopp put together a blog post a few years back that lists any of the number of ways that people gain access to tickets, legally and illegally.

  This story is interesting because it involves brokers, but also an inside source. It also highlights how useful data can be when used well…especially when the data shows patterns of strange behavior.

Don’t even get me started on what this says about the struggles of MLB to sell tickets and get fans into their stadiums.

5. The West End can weather a downturn, but what about everyone else?: One of these days, I want to be able to get a byline in The Stage because I love how thoroughly they write about issues around pricing, sales and marketing of tickets.

This is an interesting piece because it highlights a number of issues that we all need to think about:

1. Pricing strategies, especially in difficult economic times. One of the big issues with a lot of primary side dynamic pricing that I hear about from consumers is that the price goes up, but never down.

The challenge for any of us is to get the pricing of our events and our experiences right.

In a recession or a downturn, pricing properly is more of a concern than ever. Along with the ultimate challenges of selling and marketing properly.

2. Pricing, marketing, and selling isn’t a one-size-fits all endeavor. In too many places, I see teams, venues, and organizations try to take the same marketing plan that worked in Los Angeles, London, New York City, or Paris and apply it everywhere.

That doesn’t work.

You have to understand the basics of strategy through the eyes of the people you are trying to serve. I’m going to tell you from experience that a DC buyer is a lot different than an NYC buyer and all of them are different than folks in Copenhagen.

3. Discounts will kill you!

Halloween Carnival

Chapter 1

Pierre’s excited for Halloween! But of course there’s work to do so he can’t get too carried away with festivities. Minori baked cookies and they want to hand them out. Minori jokingly tells Kyoji to not steal a bite.

Michio tells Rui and Jiro that they should get going too. Rui and Michio are both in their costumes, while Jiro is still in his normal attire.. He says he’s house-sitting for the day and Rui’s like, ‘that’s boring! Let’s enjoy Halloween together~!’, while Michio’s all ‘plz don’t hesitate Yamashita-kun, let’s get Producer to work something out’

Chapter 2

There’s no spare costumes for Jiro! He carved plenty of jack o’lanterns and apparently has a knack for them. There’s bonus pay for cast today and suddenly Jiro is interested in helping..

Chapter 3

Well... S.E.M managed to find a costume after all! But Michio’s a bit hesitant to tell Jiro about it... It’s a costume for sure... a frog kigurumi. Rui's excited to see Jiro in it. Jiro suggests maybe he could just go as a mad scientist since he already has the labcoat.

Chapter 4

Rui suggests splattering the labcoat with blood for more impact. Jiro is hesitant and doesn’t think Michio will approve but he lets Rui gets his way, however, he ends up looking more like a bloodied corpse than mad scientist....

Chapter 5

It’s about time for the parade. Jiro gets ruled out of the parade because he’s just a mess. He offers to sit out but Michio says Jiro’s presence is essential for the event’s success. Michio hands him a bag full on candy that he wants him to hand out to kids.

Chapter 6

Pierre’s undecided on what costume would be good for the event; his orange Froggly suit or his pumpkin outfit:

Minori: “I think it’s nicer if you don’t wear the kigurumi... We can see Pierre’s face that way.” Kyoji: “I agree, I prefer you out of the kigurumi.” Pierre: “Got it! Then I will wear this costume today! Wait a min, I go change!!” Minori: “Pierre’s honesty is nice, isn’t it.” Kyoji: “He’s a bit too upfront, I can’t help but be a bit embarrassed when I see” Minori: “Fufu...... Kyoji also has a cute side.”

Chapter 7

Pierre has finished changing and finds Minori by himself, Kyoji went to get a drink. Minori comments that Pierre looks good in anything. Kyoji returns and asks about Pierre’s kigurumi - there was someone who wants to use it. Pierre says it’s fine but he wonders if it’s too small. Kyoji says to leave it up to Producer.

Chapter 8

Pierre: “Who was using my Froggly costume?” Kyoji: “It seems like it wasn’t used after all.” Minori: “Come to think of it, I didn’t see your Froggly kigurumi at the venue.” Pierre: “A pity. I always can’t take photo. Being side-by-side next to Froggly.” Minori: “I see, since you’re always inside of it yourself.” Pierre: “Yeah! When I wear Froggly costume, everyone smiles so I love. But, I can’t see myself…..” Kyoji: “Even if you say that… It’s not like just anyone can pull it off like you.” Pierre: “It’s okay! Kyoji is kind, thanks for worrying.”

Chapter 9

Producer came around and gave Pierre a jack o’lantern. There’s a bunch of them all over the place and they comment how it takes time to carve each one. Kyoji seems amazed that they’re all hand carved. They decide to use the lantern in the parade.

Chapter 10

Kyoji: “The position of this bolt is worrying..... Maybe I should speak with the makeup staff a bit.” Pierre: “Minori...... Kyoji is, getting more and more scary......” Minori: “Looks like it..... It’s good that he’ll scare the guests, but.....” Pierre: “Before, met Kyoji in hallway. Was surprised, wanted to run.” Minori: “Let’s keep it between us....” (Kyoji turns to them in full costume) Kyoji: “Hm.... What are you two talking about?” Pierre & Minori: “Uwah, nothing at all!!”

Chapter 11

Kyoji: “Happy Hallowe--......en...... Ah...... Ahh...... The kids ran away.......” Pierre: “Kyoji...... Sorry, I also scary......” Kyoji: “.......Maybe we need to cool it?” Pierre: “That’s it, smile, smile! It probably okay if we smile!” Kyoji: “Y-you think so? Let’s give it a test then......” Pierre: “UWWAAAAAaaHhh!? You became more scary!!” (Pierre runs away) Kyoji: “Pierre ran away too!? ........Am I that scary.......?”

Chapter 12

Kyoji still has a lot of candy to hand out. He’s thinking, wow, he sucks, and that it’s just like the first part-time job he had.

Pierre ran to Minori and they talk about Kyoji. It seems that even though the children are scared of Kyoji they seem to be having a lot of fun; Pierre thinks it was also like that for when he was in Froggly’s kigurumi. They then spot some children hiding in the corner.

Chapter 13

Kids keep running away from Kyoji and he’s not getting anywhere with his candy giving. Kyoji trips and Minori suddenly pops up to catch him. Kyoji was pushed on his back and asks if it was Minori, but it turns out it was some children nearby waving at them. The kids were all making fun of Kyoji but he was completely unaware; they weren’t running away from him because he was too scary but because he’s a loser they were having fun. Now that Kyoji knows he’s more determined than ever to give them candy. Minori says it’s wonderful that Kyoji acts like such a kind older brother.

Chapter 14

Baaaaack to S.E.M!

Rui’s giving instructions to Jiro on where to place the jack o’lanterns. Jiro is struggling and asks Rui to help since he’s older than his 50 year old self, but Rui says it’s Jiro’s job so he can’t interfere. After he’s done with the current area Michio has another job for him - cue Jiro crying inside.

Chapter 15

Michio asks Rui to explain his outfit.

Rui: “I’m a red devil! So cool, right? All the girls in the venue can’t take their eyes off me!” Michio: “I see, then, what’s your reasoning for choosing that outfit?” Rui: “There’s no reason! Just an inspiration!”

Michio thought he could’ve used Rui as a reference for why one choses to wear a certain outfit but since Rui had no reason.. Rui asks why Michio chose the vampire outfit and his reason was that because he was poor in expressing himself facially he thought it was the best solution. Rui tells him that he thinks his vampire is the coolest! and Michio’s like, thanks, this is the fruits of my research on Halloween.

Chapter 16

Later on Rui goes to the waiting room and finds Michio there. Apparently people haven’t been approaching him so he went back to read his research notes. Rui seems amazed that there’s something Michio isn’t good at. He spots a bottle of fake blood in the room, wondering where it could’ve came from (sure Rui), and suggests Michio put some around his mouth. Michio quickly refuses and Rui’s disappointed, saying that Michio would surely be popular with girls if he did.

Chapter 17

Rui’s is almost ‘sold out‘ of candy and is refilling his stock. He asks Jiro, who’s hanging around in the waiting room, if he’s playing truant but Jiro says he was just doing as Producer asked and carved pumpkins. Rui complements him and says they’re carved like a true pro.

Chapter 18

Michio is directing Jiro with placements of a jack o’lanterns, giving precise instructions of 3cms to the right, a 5 degree angle etc. Jiro complains that going right down to the cm won’t make a difference in the overall mood, but Michio is all, ‘what are you saying Yamashita-kun!! Have you never heard of the golden ratio!!’ Jiro says that does know of it... sorta.. not really.. and Michio takes this as the perfect opportunity to lecture Jiro about the golden ratio.

Chapter 19

Michio gets ready to practice for what he’s been studying for; the act of scaring people for entertainment (or something to that effect). Jiro says that Michio is really a hard to understand guy with strange tastes. Rui says he got a headache from looking at Michio’s scribblings on the whiteboard. They tell Michio to don’t go overboard but he tells them not to worry. He suggests that they all gaining new knowledge of everyday together but they flat-out refuse his offer.

Chapter 20

Michio: “Theoretically, this conduct should emit great joy from children...... nevertheless....... Why are the children not approaching around me.......” 

Seems like Michio is having problems, but by Rui’s observations Michio is actually unknowingly popular with girls. Rui asks Michio if he’ll take his lesson and Michio agrees.

Chapter 21

Michio: “Miss, if it’s alright with you, would you allow me to suck a little bit of blood?”

...aand that was what Michio learnt from Rui lol.. Michio ponders how his own research was insignificant but Rui says it’s fine because the girls (totally red-faced) enjoyed themselves.. Michio promises next year he’ll complete his theory.

Chapter 22

Minori: “Here, this is Pierre’s share of the cookies to hand out.” Pierre: “Wooow, there’s lots. I want all the guests to eat!” (Pierre runs off) Kyoji: “Minori-san, is this my portion? Hmm, these look different from the rest.” Minori: “Aahhh, those are the wrong ones. Kyoji’s share is over here. Here you go.” Kyoji: “These look like delicious cookies. I’ll work hard to hand these out.” Minori: Phew, that was a bit too close. My present to Pierre and Kyoji almost got exposed. Hm, if I leave them lying around someone might eat them. I’ll have to hide them.”

Chapter 23

Kyoji goes to consult Minori because he’s having trouble with kids running away from him again, but he actually just frightens the hell out of Minori who was looking for a place to hide the cookies. Minori says he’ll cast magic on Kyoji ~☆ Suddenly the place smells of flowers and Minori explains it’s rose oil he extracted himself. Minori asks if his magic worked and Kyoji’s just all, “er.... yeah I think something happened....”

Chapter 24

Parade’s almost over but they're still people just coming in. Pierre hands out candy to them, Minori prepares flowers for them all. Pierre asks for a flower too but Minori laughs and says he has a special present for him later. 

Chapter 25

Kyoji: “Phew.... Are we all done? ....... It was fun but exhausting...... I’m starving.....” Minori: “Good work today. It was fun, wasn’t it? By the way, I have some cookies for you, how about it?” Kyoji: “Seriously? I should’ve known. You’re always so thoughtful.” Minori: “You’re not getting more by flattering me. You can eat them back in the waiting room.” Kyoji: “Thank you. Its been a while since I’ve had cookies....” (Kyoji goes off with the cookies Minori made him and Pierre) Minori: “Now then, it’s probably time Pierre wants a snack. Where did he go...... I wonder if he left any hints.” (Minori goes off to find Pierre)
