Friend of a Friend (Pt 2)

I need her boss's number and see if I can get some more information on this text... you thought to yourself. you finished scanning over another paper when your fax machine in the next room started running.

You walked over to the next room and saw where it was from. And it had the address of her office on it. That's how I'll find her. You took the paper and went to sit back down at your desk. this one was looking a bit complicated, so you grabbed a few reference books to help you out. A few of the ways some letters were written look different than what you had seen before. You decided to take a quick break to ask Lorna about her boss's number.

hey Lorna! I need some background information on the paper, could you send me your boss's number, please?

you close out the conversation, and speed dial the downtown sushi shop for dinner. When you end the conversation, you grab your keys, coat, and LA hat. After you put on the hat, it makes your outfit much more casual. You walk out of the building and turn on your Ferrari 250 GT California. You scroll through your Spotify looking for a playlist.

You start to drive downtown, singing along to the music. Your phone goes off, and it's Lorna's boss, Mickey.

Hey, what did you need my number for?

You leave him on reading, deciding your life isn't worth it to text and drive just yet. You like to live life on the edge. some call you an adrenaline junkie, some others careless. You prefer adrenaline junkie. and you don't plan on going out of this world because you need to text someone back. 

You get to the sushi place, then text him back

I need some background information on the paper you had Lorna send over. Would you like to meet up sometime? tonight is preferable, but I understand if we have to do it sometime tomorrow also, so either is fine with me.

Alright, tonight works fine for me, where do you want to meet?

I'm at the sushi place right now, if you wanna come over here. 

OK, I'll be there in 10.

you go inside and wait in line to pick up your order. Once you get it you walk out and see a convertible pull up. considering it is late, you assume it's Mickey. He gets out, sunglasses still over his eyes, but even with those, your still jaw slacks slightly. He removes his glasses and puts them back into his car.

"You're Y/N, correct?" he says, walking up to you, and he extends his hand.

"uh, yeah, that's me!" you say with a cheeky smile, reaching your hand out to return the handshake. You make eye contact, and you practically melt at how pretty his eyes are. You're thankful it's getting darker because ur sure the heat in your cheeks would be extremely obvious otherwise.

"Do you want to sit in my car and talk?" you offer, gesturing to your car.

"Sure, I'd rather not be bitten by mosquitoes right now."

you walk over to your car, and open the passenger door for him. he sits down and thanks you, and then you panic once you hear the song that playing, and sort of loud too.

that's all you hear for a few seconds, as you realize how awkward this situation is.

you place your sushi onto the car as you scramble to turn down the volume. As you scramble overtop of him to turn off the volume, you hear the song going

and then you finally turn off the volume, you realize the severity of the situation. you're practically laying across his lap, after an incredibly suggestive song was just playing. You push yourself off of him, rethinking your birth.

You grab your sushi and walk to your seat. "let's never talk about that, agreed? none of it. the song. the, uh, position.  none of it."

"agreed. None of it."

You reach out your pinky for a pinky promise and then look at his hands. they are veiny. very veiny. You sure catch your staring, but if he did he doesn't say anything.

"ok, so let's talk about what we're here to talk about. The paper."

"right, so what do you mean when you say background information?"

"things like when it was written, where it was, and if possible, what this person's mood was."

"oh ok. It was written around 3 in the morning, I think at a 24/7 diner of some sort. I'm not sure what the mood was, I haven't gone over the CCTV footage yet, and I doubt it's gonna give much through the facial expressions." he says using hand gestures, it's like he's trying to seduce you or something. but the question is, why you?

"ok, that helps. was he with anyone else?" you say, writing this stuff down in a small notepad you grabbed from your purse.

"no, not sure. give me just a second, I think the police sent me the video earlier." he thrusts his hips forward in an attempt to grab his phone from his back pocket, and you swear you start foaming at the mouth. an image flashes through your mind, of you sitting topless, with just your underwear on. on top of his thigh, his lips moving along your bare chest. him staring up at you with lust-filled eyes with that gorgeous chocolate brown color.

Instinctively, you clench your thighs together, trying to relieve the ache of your poor clit. it's been a while since you've had some action and some good action? even longer. you had to fake your orgasm with your last one, and unfortunately, it was not your first time doing that.

"alright, so based off of the body language of him and the waitress, he was likely being slightly hostile, but it was only him as a customer then. when he first walked in, 2 friends were there for about 5 minutes before leaving, but other than that, he was on his own the whole time."

still writing that down in your notebook, he put his phone down. you looked up, noticing it had gone quiet, except for your chewing in your own ears. "what?" you said, looking up at him, mouth still full. he just kept on looking at you. little did you know, there were also images flashing through his mind. the difference between yours and his, is he though about acting upon those thoughts. imagining you on his bed, completely naked, and him on his knees for you, pleasing you in every possible way, your wish was his command.

At this point you had finished your sushi, placing the plastic and chopstick on the panel above the wheel. "you have something on your mouth..." he said while leaning in, he flicked his thumb across your bottom lip.

something changed in that moment. like a twig, something snapped. you pushed yourself foward, your lips landing on his. it was incredible. the best youve ever had, honestly. you kept leaning in, not being able to get close enough.

"do you want to take this to the backseat?" you said, parting your lips for a second.

he mumbles an "mhm" and you both get out and back into the backseat.

he moves to the middle of the seat, and you crawl and put your thighs on either side of his. you felt extremely hot, and you were confident too. you felt bold, even. so, you put your hand on his chest, slowly helping him take off his blazer. then unbutton some of his oxford shirt, but leaving it tucked in. god, he looked so hot.

you moved your hand along his chest, dragging your nails across it. with your other hand, you started palming him slightly. you could feel him growing beneath you, and it was big. you felt his hand rise slightly, gripping onto your thighs. you deepen the kiss, leaning into him even more. his hands rose, to your waist. then your shoulders, then they moved to unbuttoning your blouse..good thing you chose a sexy bra. pink, lace on the top of the cups, and a plunge. he stopped kissing you, and just stared at your breasts.

"see anything you like?" you said, as you grinding your hips down onto the tent in his pants. he whimpers slightly, and tilts his head back. you take the chance and start sucking on his neck, leaving marks that would be just barely visible above his collar

Levi is always really good at keeping surprises from you. No amount of pestering nor poking would make him relent his deepest darkest secrets. Even when you pulled the birthday card and asked for even the smallest of hints, he didn’t budge.

You suppose that wasn’t the worst thing, but you’d be lying to yourself if you said you weren’t the littlest peeved at it even though you knew it would benefit you in the long run.

So, when Levi blindfolded you the moment you both buckled into his car for the afternoon, you can’t help but sigh heavily. He told you to dress casually and you both skipped lunch, so you knew he was taking you out to eat.

Why he wouldn’t show you where he was taking you though was beyond you. You knew this town like the back of your hand so where could he even take you that you wouldn't know?

“Levi, you’ve kept me on my toes for a whole month. At least tell me something about it?” You whine. The speakers around you play the shared playlist you and Levi had made together in an effort to stop fighting over who got the music that day – the rule being each artist would get 5 songs each. You managed to swing 10 for a couple artists, which of course was met with an eye roll.

“You’ve waited one month. What’s another 15 minutes?” He grumbles next to you. You feel his hand sit on your thigh and squeeze your flesh gently.

“Just one teeny-tiny smidgen?”

“Fine. I don’t think this is a good idea.”

“What do you mean?”

“You said one small thing. That’s all you get.” There’s a hint of a smirk in his voice, which only makes you huff quietly.

There are a few turns and stops here and there but eventually, you feel the car slow to a stop before hearing Levi moving the gear stick into park. He turns the car off, the jingling of keys filling up the now empty space.

"Are you ready?" He asks off to the side.

"Yes!" Then you feel his long fingers hooking into the blindfold and tugging up and out of your eyes then over your head.

It takes a few hard blinks before your vision can make sense of the brightness around you. At first you notice you’re in front of some sort of shopping center. Upon further investigation, you’re in front of a café.

There are big, wide glass windows on the entire exterior wall, littered with various paw prints and cat vinyl stickers. On one of the windows reads ‘Whiskers Perch’ with a cat paw holding up a steaming mug of something. Your first thought is it’s a cat themed café but then your eyes snap to movement right below the name – it’s a tabby cat doing the biggest stretch known to man.

This isn’t just a cat themed café.

This is a cat café.

And Levi took you here for your birthday because you’ve always wanted to visit one of these.

“Oh my, Levi..” Your voice trails off as you look over to your boyfriend of many years. He’s eyeing you cautiously as he gauges your reaction. You give him a wide smile and lean over to kiss him on the cheek softly.

“This is the best thing ever! I see why you wanted to wait to show me.” You can’t hold back the squeal that comes out as you unbuckle yourself from the seat. Levi softly huffs in amusement next to you as he does the same.

When you and Levi walk in, you’re met immediately by a hostess wearing a long apron and cute pink top. She smiles at you both as she looks up from the pad in her hand.

“Hi! Welcome! What name is your reservation under?” Her pretty eyes bounce between the two of you.

“Ackerman.” Levi says. The hostess’ eyes trail down her pad before releasing a small ‘ah!’ and marking something down.

“Great, looks like you booked for an hour and fifteen. Follow me this way!” She chirps as she sits the pad down on the wooden podium.

As the hostess leads you to your reserved spot, you don’t hesitate to ogle at everything around you. The café is quite large, which you wouldn’t have guessed from just the outside alone. There’s one central lobby where cats freely roam – either sleeping on the many towers or playing with each other and the miscellaneous toys lying about. You don’t spot the patrons right away but as you move further in, you notice there are semi-enclosed rooms lining the outer walls.

Each room has an archway as an entrance, kept wide open so that cats and patrons can come and go, and above each door is a number – the max going to 24. Most of the booths are filled with multiple people, all eating and drinking with cats lingering around them. The best thing about the little enclosed alcoves was that the noise level is minimum.

She takes you to an alcove off to the left, labeled number 8.

“Your waiter will be with you momentarily. Please take a few minutes to read through the rules if you haven’t already.” She smiles widely at the two of you as you settle in before taking off back to the front.

There are a couple small menus in front of you and you reach over to pick them up. One is a menu for food and drinks and the other is a rules list.

1. Be gentle – no tugging or pulling.

2. No loud noises.

3. Do not pick up the cats – let them come to you.

4. Do not share the food/drinks with the cats.

5. Cats are cats, we are not held liable for any damage they may cause you.

6. If there’s any emergency, do not hesitate to alert a team member.

7. Feel free to take pictures and have fun!

8. Some cats may be up for adoption – please ask a team member if you might be interested.

A lot of these rules are common sense, though you can't blame them for reiterating them for those who need it. The last rule catches your eye and you find yourself flicking your gaze up and over the menu to Levi. He’s busy looking at the drink menu and pays you no mind. Is this why he said this was a bad idea?

“Are there any teas you want to try?” Levi asks over to you, his eyes still glued to the laminated menu in his hands.

“You’re the tea connoisseur, I trust you.” You shrug your shoulders as your eyes graze the menu in front of you. The teas had fancy names with their blends underneath and truth be told, it was all a little overwhelming. Best to leave it to Levi, you think. But the food…

Your waiter comes by a few moments later to take the orders, dropping off a teapot and a couple of cups right after. As Levi stirs the leaves around, you take this chance to stare out to the lobby. There are a myriad of cats running about but none paying much mind – except for a small jet black one sitting high in one of the cat towers.

Bright yellow eyes stare into yours from far away. You can’t see much of him as he’s tucked in high, but from what you can see, there are a few nicks in his ears and his face is quite round. Besides his eyes, everything is dark – like a black void. He only sits and stares at the two of you, despite you trying to coax him to come closer.

“Levi, I think this one is plotting our murder.” You mutter, pointing towards the dark void.

“Well, it is a cat. That’s just how they are.” Levi says back jokingly. Satisfied with the steeping time, he pours a dark red liquid into the cups before sliding yours over to you so you can make it up as you like with the ingredients offered. Levi leans back with his cup in hand, the way he always does, and takes a careful sip as he eyes you doing the same.

The flavor is wonderful, and you can’t even begin to categorize the different notes. It’s sweet and floral, almost earthy in tones – with a light spice. Levi always knew how to pick a good tea. You lean back in your seat and sigh in content.

“This is good.” You say finally, setting the cup and saucer back down on to the table with a clink.

“It’s not half bad.”

“Not half bad? That’s some high praise from Levi Ackerman.” You joke, raising an eyebrow at him.

Suddenly there’s a shift in weight on your booth as a large short-haired orange cat leaps onto it. It’s tan striped with a few white spots across his face. Wide hazel eyes stare up at you.

Mrrooww!

“Oh look at you!” You coo down as you place your hand on his head and start scratching. His fur is soft and you feel his body vibrating under you as he purrs loudly. Trailing your fingers down his red collar, you pinch the tag between two fingers and lean down for a closer look.

“Milo huh? You are such a cuties.” You whisper down to him. He lets you pet his back a couple more times before circling around and lying down next to you. His eyes are closed instantly, deciding this is his new napping spot. You place your hand on his soft belly and pet it, eliciting more purrs.

You and Levi fill the time before the food came with talks of what you’d like to do that evening. As cats came for face rubs and left with happy purrs, you ultimately decide you want to stay home and make dinner together then maybe settle in with a movie. Levi, of course, agreed easily as he was not one who liked to be out at night anyways – but he was always willing if you wanted it. The idea of going out for your birthday became less appealing as the years came and went. Well, with the exception of the cat café, of course.

The next time your eyes survey the lobby is after the waiter comes by to pick the empty plates in front of you. You immediately spot the same black cat from earlier. He’s much closer this time, sitting back on his hind legs with his front paws barely passing through the arch. Those electric eyes stare up but not at you. They’re staring straight at Levi, who stops talking to look over once he realizes your attention is no longer on the conversation.

“Levi, I think the murder he’s plotting is yours.” You say quietly. An attempt to ‘pspsps’ is made but to no avail. Not even a glance is thrown your way. The cat slowly blinks before standing up on all fours and leaving.

“If I go missing, you’ll know it was him.” Levi says back dryly.

You snort at that as your hands reach down under the table to pet the long white fur belonging to a Himalayan cat that had laid claim to your lap halfway through your meal. You don’t fight the urge to boop the soft pink nose of your new friend. A baby blue eye cracks open at you from the sudden touch but she just curls up even more on your legs, stretching her paws out to show you matching soft pink beans.

“How much time do we have left, do you think?” You ask Levi as you look up at him. He’s watching you intently with those dark eyes of his and there’s a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips as he does.

“About another 20 minutes.” He glances at his phone screen to check the time. You peep the screen and notice his background is a picture of you sitting on the central fountain in your town’s square, mid-laugh as you try hide from the camera. It was taken a few weeks ago and you wonder how long he’s had it like that. It’s intriguing considering he always kept the original images that came with the phone upon first purchasing it, but you don’t press.

There’s a soft ding to the right of you and when you look down, you see that the black cat is back – this time with a small silver toy in his mouth. It seems to be a bell attached to a string. In a swift motion, he jumps up to Levi’s booth and sets it down next to Levi before sitting back on his haunches and staring up into Levi’s startled eyes.

This is the first cat to approach Levi the entire time you have been there. And he was brought a gift no less. You find yourself quietly giggling at the sight and don’t hesitate to snap a picture of their stare off.

The quiet mewl he makes melts your heart immediately.

“He brought you dinner.” You say softly.

“She, actually.” The waiter that had left with the check earlier is back now, setting the black book and pen down in front of Levi. “She’s unusually quiet for her breed, so it’s nice to see her so open with a patron. What did you do?”

“I didn’t do anything.” Levi grumbles, taking the pen and signing the merchant receipt in his neat handwriting.

“Can I ask what kind of cat she is? And what happened to her?” You eye the nicks in her ears. There are a few chunks taken out, all fully healed.

“She’s a rescue. Before coming here, she was locked in a cage at all times. You see, she’s a bombay so you can imagine what they held her for. They’re quite rare.” The waiter says sadly. They perk up quickly though, and smiles over to Levi. “But she’s really taken a liking to you.”

Levi carefully reaches over and his hand hovers over her head in hesitation. She initially pulls back and you can see the gears in her head rolling as she considers Levi. She opts to sniff his hand and that’s it.

They do look good together, you think.

“Can I ask- is she up for adoption?” Levi’s eyes snap to yours.

“We don’t have room for a cat right now.” He mutters quietly.

“Shush.” You wave your hand at him before turning your attention back to the waiter.

“She is! Would like me to get the paperwork?”

“Now hold on a minute-“

“Levi, look how much she likes you!” You stretch your arms out to the black cat who had not moved a muscle during this whole interaction. Yellow eyes blink slowly up at Levi.

“That doesn’t refute the fact that we barely have the space nor time to take care of her.”

“We’ll make room. Besides, I work from home so I can keep an eye on her!”

Levi says your name with exasperation, narrowing his gaze at you.

“She needs a home.” You say, and even more quietly, “Plus, it’s my birthday.”

“You’re impossible.” He grumbles before turning his attention back to black cat next to him. There’s no collar around her neck. “What’s her name?” He asks, looking up to the waiter.

“She never came with one nor did she answer to one.” The waiter purses his lips.

“Would you like to come home with us?” Levi asks gently to the cat. You swear you see her round eyes widen as another quiet mewl escapes her. His expression has softened considerably and the tone he uses makes your heart jump. It's all laced with adoration. Slowly raising your phone up, you take another photo.

Levi straightens up and clears his throat before raking his fingers through his hair as he thinks. His eyes slide over to you, almost as if he was checking one more time if this is really what you want. You give him two thumbs up.

“Fine, bring me the paperwork.”

Half an hour later, the adoption papers were official and you are both sitting in his car, the silence almost deafening. Your new family member curls up in the carrier that was provided to you to take, and you turn around in your seat to watch her sleep.

“Are you mad?” You whisper over to Levi.

“No.” Levi turns the keys, the car rumbling to life right away.

“Are you sure?” You bite your lip nervously.

“Yes, I’m not mad. Just-“ He looks over to you. “This is our first pet together. I’m…”

“Levi, are you nervous?”

“No. Maybe. I don’t know.” Levi grips the steering wheel and puts the gear in reverse. He checks the rearview mirror for any oncoming traffic, his gaze dipping down to the black cat in the backseat.

“You’re going to be a great cat dad, Levi.” You smile over at him. He just sighs softly as he pulls out of the parking spot, eyes alert to anything that might come in his blindspots.

“We’ll see. Have you thought of a name?”

“I was thinking Bleptholomew.” You say back with confidence.

“Absolutely fucking not.” He says quickly, eyes cutting over to you from the mirror. “Besides, that sounds like a boy's name.”

“Pft, cats can be named anything. They don’t believe in gendered names.” You cross your arms over your chest with a fake pout.

“Anything else?”

“Frankie?”

As Levi drives out of the parking lot and into the busy street, he reaches over and gives your thigh a squeeze.

“Frankie it is.”

YOU LEAVE A SONG ON REPEAT BY ACCIDENT FOR ONE (1) NIGHT and it gets the honor of top spot... i wasnt insane enough about any other songs to get over 250 plays this yr. dopamine was less than 10 scrobbles behind though. if i'd not had that one night of repeat streaming, My Girl by A.C.E. would be in my top 5 as it deserves ! icantfeelanything is good though whatever

3. What playlists do you have on your phone? a solid handful, i’d say. i have my adam/belle playlist, my classic/soft rock playlist with over 400 songs that’s just good for jammin’ sometimes, and my playlist of songs from when i was in middle/high school (generally) for the nostalgic vibes called “songs that slapped and still do.” i do have others but like there’s some for ya.

10. What’s your favorite book? ahhh i always just say that my favorite AUTHOR is fredrik backman, so any of his books. but if i really had to pick one of his books, i think i’d say a man called ove. it’s what got me into his writing and i fell in love with it from the very first chapter. close second (or maybe even my favorite, if i took the nostalgia aspect away) is beartown. which is just… a phenomenal book.

18. What’s the most expensive thing you’ve ever bought? uhh my tv i think? i think it was like $200 or $250 or something like that. i bought it from my brother lol. i really don’t LIKE making big purchases, i hate spending money. but lately i’ve been considering buying a switch…so that may happen👀

25. What’s a controversial opinion you have? well i already answered this one here but i guess normal people have multiple of these so uhhh. idk, this is also autism-based but hot take: tomatoes and onions and bell peppers SUCK. i respect what they do for flavors but the textures are horrendous and make me gag <3 i can handle tomato sauce, and onions are sometimes manageable, but in general: 🖕 and i have noooo tolerance for bell peppers. they’re the WORST.

30. Have you ever met a celebrity? nah no one very famous. I DID MEET MY FAVORITE AUTHOR FREDRIK BACKMAN THOUGH !!!!!! and i’ve met my favorite christian singer, jordan feliz. but again, no big names. i’d love to meet dan stevens one day but i worry i would start crying. but i just wanna tell him how much i love his talent and how thankful i am for all he did in batb :(

BABYMONSTER - DRIP (Album Review)

I promised and now I’m delivering it. The full review for this confusing clusterfuck of an album is finally here. I’ve always only been halfway enjoying this groups music because being frankly honest most of their songs are half actual music and half shouting random onomatopoeia trying to disguise itself as “rapping”.I’ve been putting off these review for a while due to a multitude of factors but given the group is finally performing on music shows now this would be a semi-good time. So without further ado, let’s get on to the first track.

DISCLAIMER: These songs are organized on the list in the order they come in the official digital album release, not in any other particular order.

1. CLICK CLACK

Remember that part at the beginning of the thread where I said Baby Monster’s songs are half just shouting random onomatopoeia and passing it off as rap? This is like that but on medical marijuana. It feels so fucking slow it’s irritating but the song is short so it feels like they’re singing super fast over a beat moving at a snail’a pace. I don’t know if the PR team at YG noticed yet but putting a vignette filter over your music video, wearing chains, and singing about how much money you have will not earn you brownie points from the black community, especially not me. And hey I’m not opposed to the existence of khh, k-rap, or krnb it’s just that this stuff is probably better done by Yoon Mirae or BIBI.

Overall: 5/10

2. DRIP

It’s honestly pretty okay and better than I expected (though that’s attributed to the fact my expectations weren’t that high). I must point out first before anything that one move in the choreo that makes them look like slugs trying to escape a salt pit is out of place and really not needed for a song of this kind though I enjoyed everything else. I actually really liked Ahyeon’s high note a lot here despite a lot of people not liking it. While we’re on the topic of her anyways I just wanna say her dancing isn’t as bad as before but it could just be better. Is this my favorite title track from the girls? Fuck no, and if I ever say it is just know that’s my evil clone created by the government. But I could definitely see this being on my playlist and I think Baby Monster’s music is actually getting way better than it was before.

3. Love, Maybe

This song is pretty good and probably one of my favorites from the album. I don’t really like Ahyeon’s voice here bc she doesn’t really suit these slower BM songs but it’s minor enough to not hinder my enjoyment of it generally. This song is very Charlie Puth-y tbh and I wouldn’t be surprised if he sold his version to YG because he also had a demo version of Like That he ended up giving to YG. I’ve always been a fan of kpop ballads and even if they aren’t stellar I’d definitely still listen to them bc that’s just my type of music. I think it could’ve been developed more but it’s not bad in the slightest. Overall: 8/10

4. Really Like You

It’s the fourth song on the album and while the number 4 being bad luck doesn’t have much to do with this song being mediocre, it only strengthens my superstition. It sounds like Netflix theme song music which is something I thought I would never say about a song at all in my entire existence but alas. It’s just so ehh. I swear this sounded better when I was playing it in the shower. I tried to give it a few listens but I kinda got tired of it halfway into the second. Maybe the prepubescent girl audience of Baby Monster would appreciate this more than me and honestly more power to them because this song simply isn’t for me and I’ll leave it at that.

Overall: 4.5/10

5. BILLIONARE

Essentially Like That part two but without everything that made it likable. Jokes aside it’s just very nothing. I really expected this section to be longer but this is genuinely all I can say.

6. Love In My Heart

I remember when Forever came out and everyone talked about how much it sounded like a song from 2014 but I think that crown clearly belongs to this. The verse with Asa and Ruka would 100% be Pitbull’s. I think they really suit songs like this and should do more of them. Out of everything on the album I remembered this the most aside from CLICK CLACK. My only complaint is that like all the song sim this album it’s quite short. 3 minutes and about 13 seconds might not seem short to other people but even 25-30 more seconds for a proper outro would’ve been appreciated.

Overall: 8.5/10

7. Woke Up In Tokyo (Asa & Ruka)

I technically already did two reviews of this god awful song and this will make three.

But TL;WR, the song is awful because it sampled a children’s nursery rhyme of all things which if not anything this ruined it entirely and o won’t ever think otherwise.

8. FOREVER

I would’ve reviewed this song when it was still popular but I had left that up to a poll competing with three other girl group songs at the time and Klaxon had won the poll instead . But really I think Forever is a pretty good song for BABYMONSTER standards. I liked it a lot when it was released this June and I still do now. I just wish it had a better outro because it was missing something in my eyes. But a lot of BM songs have these qualities so it’s not surprising

I didn’t fucking like Batter Up when it came out last November what makes you think I’ll give this somehow worse rendition of the same song preferential treatment

Once upon a time...

Long long ago I was an announcer at a small-town AM radio station. 1000 watts daytime, 250 watts at night.

This was my console...

... a Gates "Gatesway" 8-channel mono board. Ours wasn't as pretty as this one. On either side of me when I sat at the board were...

... giant transcription turntables for the records.

In a cabinet over the board were several (3 or 4) ...

... cart machines of various brands and makes for playing...

... Fidelipac tape carts. These weren't 8-track, they were single-track mono available in sizes from 30 seconds to 10 minutes. They held station ID, commercials, jingles, songs... in the studio around the announcer were racks holding hundreds of them.

Hanging in front of my face was an older version of this...

...and we had pretty nice Sennheiser HD-414 headphones to wear.

Of course, back then there were records. Cabinets in the studio held thousands and thousands of records... LP and 45 records carefully cataloged and sorted and filed in colored sleeves called "shucks"...

... each color holding a certain type of record. Red for rock, yellow for country, blue for adult contemporary. Everything got moved into green when they came out of rotation and went to the record library.

We also got taped programs and advertising agency commercials. The commercials got transferred to carts and the programs were played on the air from our big Ampex 351 reel-to-reel tape deck in the equipment rack across the room...

...or the smaller Ampex 601...

... that stood on the counter beside the left-hand turntable. Besides programs on tape there were "transcription" records holding syndicated shows like "Our Changing World" by Earl Nightingale...

...that got played once then tossed in the trash.

It was all great fun. The announcer played the music and jingles, wrote copy for advertisers and recorded the spots, conducted in-studio interviews, read the United Press International news every hour, ran the transmitter and made adjustment and took readings (I had to get the FCC third-class restricted radiotelephone operator permit to legally operate a 1KW AM transmitter), answered the phone in the evenings and took out the trash. I wasn't "Doctor Johnny Fever" by any means, but I sat in a studio like his and did what he did.

Now it's all computerized and automated.

I still have recurring dreams that I'm on the air and I don't know any of the music and don't know what record to play next. We didn't have "playlists", it was up to us to mix the music in a pleasing manner and that is hard if you aren't familiar with any of it. Also, I dream that it is coming up to a 30-minute newscast on the top of the hour and I don't have any news copy to read.

40 years later I still miss it.

1. Favorite fic I wrote this year

I suppose I would have to say Never Know How Much I Care? Because it was more of a departure/more ambitious than other works in that it was longer, had at least a tiny semblance of plot, had some smut, etc. Also the fic exchange was WILD and it was very exciting to be a part of it, so that was cool.

I do have a soft spot for At Least Out Loud, I Won't Say I'm In though, as it mainly got dreamed up in my head on a drive into the city and then came out pretty much fully-formed right out of the gate, like Athena?

9. Favorite writing song inspiration

O manne, my musical tastes are and always have been Extremely Uncool, so my ficwriting inspirations are no exception. I have to cite the playlist I made of melodramatic power ballads for ...And I Feel The Hand Of Fate as the most direct inspiration, given that each chapter title comes from a song lyric (I hope it is 250 chapters because my titles list is inexhaustible). I just like the Dramz, yo.

13. Most memorable comment or review

O MANNE is it pathetic or hokey to say that every comment or review someone gives is amazing to me and feels like an undeserved gift? 20/10, could never not recommend.

That being said, if I have to narrow it down, some things that come to mind are:

*Someone writing a detailed comment on how my fic could be a sexy political thriller (and that I would of course be an executive producer)

*Someone writing that my fic was like a White Walker because they were like a poor corpse that kept getting reanimated and then killed by it over and over again

*Someone complimenting me on my usage of "louche" to describe Jaime, which I had been very pleased to use and was tickled that someone had noticed

*A reader saying that if they had found my fic when it was still anonymous they would have recognized it because my Jaime was the funniest in the fandom (here I am Deeply Conflicted about whether it's more rude for me to argue with a compliment or to let something so wildly inaccurate stand, but it was exceedingly nice nonetheless)

*Someone commenting on a smutty chapter that I had been nervous about publishing with a simple "jesus christ ! ! !" (😂😂😂 they later clarified that it was not a bad thing, and of course even if it had been I would not have resented the criticism, but it was hilarious)

*My exchange recipient leaving lovely long comments on every chapter...when dozens of things were being published at the same time, readership was consequently low, but it was very nice to know that at least the intended giftee was reading and hopefully enjoying (several others also commented and ilu all too)

*Anybody who comes back later to leave another comment or re-read kudos, etc, because it's awesome to be initially appreciated but very exciting to have Staying Power

(I took "this year" to mean "2020", which just barely cuts off all the very nice people who said nice things about my first fic, published on 12/21/19)

Over 250K Americans Have Died From Covid.  Don’t Forget Them.

I don’t know if you’re like me, but this Thanksgiving will be one unlike any other for me.  My celebration is going to be extremely small, and I won’t see anyone from my immediate family that day.  Yes, it sucks.  But I’m keeping it in perspective.  The way I see it, my family is one of the lucky ones.  Yes, the holiday itself is basically lost this year.  But we have been fortunate in that, in our family, there are have been no lives lost.  And there’s a good chance that, as long as we stay safe these next few months, we’ll be able to party like we used to.  A lot of families aren’t so lucky though.  Over 250 thousand American families, in fact.  Don’t forget them.  If you catch yourself thinking how much the holidays are going to suck, how much they will be different because your family won’t be gathering around the table like usual….just imagine if that was permanent.  My heart goes out to them.  And if you are one of those families, my heart goes out to you too.  This playlist is dedicated to all of the lives who have been lost so far to the pandemic.  May you rest in peace, and may your family and friends have strength during this difficult holiday season.

my roommate have been making a shared roommate playlist for a few weeks and slowly adding 5, 10, 15 songs each at a time and we were all shy at first about worrying over differing tastes because like a Juggalo and into Metallica and that is so not me but like first I got him to like Lana del Rey with her Sublime cover and then all of NFR! and we slowly got more bold with our choice and suddenly I’m digging the Foo Fighters and getting ICP’s rage and jokes and today he declared,

we’re up to like 250 songs and we are both thoroughly enjoying everything like we are finding we like everything the other likes ???  like he used to tell me he doesn’t like pop country so i’d been holding off on the Dixie Chicks but yesterday we opened up and we talked about which bands we’ve been holding back on and I mentioned them and he was like I LOVE THE DIXIE CHICKS! and i was like OMG REALLY? and he was like “i’ve been holding off on Metallica” and I was like “Lars will always be a douchebag but tbh i’m not the music snob you remember 18 years ago and they make really solid metal” and it was a breakthrough and now we’re adding ANYTHING and it’s like having a whole new letting go of music snobbery revolution all over again it’s INCREDIBLE.

we’re adding our favorite covers of songs and then the other will add the original.  it’s SO FUN. goal is to get to 1000 songs
