In Defense of the Piccolo

I know other band geeks and musos tend to make fun of the piccolo a lot. And look... I get it. If dogs operated spy agencies, the piccolo would be a universal torture device. But listen. Listen. This is not an instrument you play because you think it’s beautiful or has a nice tone or you saw someone play once or whatever. No.

This is an instrument you play because it is the 16th time that you, the flautist, have been told to “play louder” because the conductor “can’t hear you” which, in all honesty is because there are only two flutes in your entire orchestra, your not positioned in a place the sound carries well, so it gets lost, and the trumpet section behind you has never played anything quieter than fortissimo in their entire lives.

And so, in the depths of musical frustration, you turn to the piccolo. You summon up the oxygen from the deepest depth of your diapragm, and you make the highest piteched squeal you can summon.
